He is perfect! Knows his stuff well and cares about you. His lectures were amazing and he is very funny. He makes sure you work for your grade which is a very positive thing for a graduate level course.
he is very helpful when I need. but except that, everything's horrible. he speaks too fast and tries to be funny but he isn't. tests are so tough and assignments are tougher. wouldn't take his class. NEVER.
Made an 8:30am class enjoyable. HWs are harder than the tests IMO. Two exams, HWs, and one term paper. Explains the material really well and answers any questions that you may have. Should go to class as attendance is sometimes counted. Overall, a great professor and a worthwhile class. He even baked cookies for one of the lectures.
He is a good instructor, and he makes things so interesting and attractive.
Prof Matt was super helpful and approachable. His lectures was insteresting and clearly showed the test materials. The final grade was mostly depended on your quizzes. Quizzes were conceptual based so study and do homeworks. Go to find TA or Prof Matt if you have any question.
I absolutely loved Matt! He answers emails and BB posts almost immediately, gives you the rubric for your term paper way ahead of time, and definitely grades fairly. He wants you to do well, not for his sake but for your own. He was funny, lively, and loves class participation. He even brought us candy and cookies around the holidays! Great guy.
He is good on the easier material, but he is not a "natural teacher". For example, he actually taught diagonalization of a matrix before he taught what eigenvalues/vectors are. He teaches from his note verbatim, but when some asks him a question and he tries to make up an example on the fly he generally messes up.
He is NOT a good professor. Period.
Never understood what he was teaching in multivariable calculus. Made everything so complicated.
The test is too hard! And the difficulty of the tests are much harder than the homework. Sometimes I even don't know what the test problems ask.
Exams are the way difficult. But he gives a lot of partial credits if you write something on the exam. Do not leave with blank, even though he gives 20 percent points for blank. Writing something is more worth than blank. His lectures are confusing. Full of self studying. Read textbook carefully and do all the exercises problems.
The tests are way too hard. He complicated this class. No practice tests either. He just posts the topics that will be covered on the exam. And when I mean by topics, it's basically everything he went over in lecture. Be prepared to do lots of self-studying. His TAs are your only hope.
Matt is a very good professor. The complaints are likely just coming from bad students. His lectures are very engaging, and he's extremely charismatic and smart. His course is also designed really well with interesting challenge problems and a forgiving grading structure. You won't find a better Calc 3 instructor at SBU imo.
Class is very interesting if you like 3D application and calc 3
He seems nice, never talked to him personally. Lectures are boring but informative. I had 2 issues: 1 He really likes to throw curve balls on tests. The material is hard but he makes it worse 2 He didn't post solutions to the practice exams. This is the stupidest thing, it makes studying on your own hard and not everyone can make office hours
You will think you're gonna fail AMS261 until you take the final. His redemption on the final allows you to earn back half the points you lost on each midterm. Honestly a life saver if you're not doing well. This guys final saved my gpa and hopefully will save yours too. Was on track to get a D+ until I took the final. MAKE SURE YOU STUDY HARD.
Put the time in and this is a valuable course.
This is a challenging course, but as long as you put the work in you will be okay. Seek out help if needed; it is readily available. One of the better professors at Stony Brook.
One of the best math professors I've had. Reuter is very smart and good at simplifying problems. His office hours are inviting and he truly wants to see everyone do good in this course. His lectures are helpful and he keeps it entertaining. Homework is heavy at times but its necessary for such hard topics. All in all , great class.
Matt is one of the best math teachers I've ever had specifically because of his engaging, in-depth lectures. He is sure to delve deeply into a concept and gives ample opportunity for reviewing the material outside of the class through homework and challenge problems. He expects you to work hard and honestly but it is certainly worth it.
Matt is a nice professor but his lectures are not so helpful to complete homework and prepare yourself for exams. His sample exams are nothing like actual exams. Not difficult but seems like nothing I solved in class or homeworks.
Bro, I did not show up once to this guys lectures unless we had a quiz. Super easy class if you know how to use Echo.
One of my favorite professors at Stony. He's funny and caring and a good lecturer. It's a tough class, but if you go to lecture and try throughout the semester, you'll be fine. Also, if you mess up on a midterm, he gives back credit if you do well on that unit's section in the final.
He's the best math professor I have seen so far, but he's class is also challenge. Be prepared to do lots of homework and studies outside of class. I learned a lot from his lectures. Great choice if you want to challenge yourself.
Really good teacher, cares about his students learning and understanding the material. The course is tough and expects you to put in the work. If you don't , you will not do good on the exams plain and simple.
Great lectures, fair homework, good pacing
the class itself is hard but reuter is a very good professor. every midterm so far has been "not too easy but not too hard" and are generally fair while being relative to everything he's taught in class. nice, always accessible, but very stern when it comes to cheating. a student was writing after the test ended and he lost 20 points.
He explains concepts very well in his lectures. However, his hw is hard and very time consuming and frustrating. His tests are a big part of the grade and they are manageable if you practice the hard hw questions and practice tests. You will come out of this class with a very strong understanding of calc3 concepts.
Reuter is honest to God a great professor.. However, this class isn't a glide by class. If you have other classes that are more important, leave this one alone. This class consumes LOTS of time. The homework is very tough, DO NOT USE CHEGG! YOU WILL REGRET IT. MANY people fail out and drop it. This is infamous for AMS as one of the hardest courses
Mind blowing lectures and phenomenal speaker. Those who are willing to put in the extra effort, will do well in the class. This is not an easy class by any means, most people struggle and drop the course. Reuter prepares you. Just have to study your ass off. Practice exams are not enough, learn and re-learn. A little bit of sweat goes a long way.
the class is notoriously difficult and Reuter confirms this, but does his absolute best to prepare the material for you in a way for it to be understandable. very honest and caring and is always willing to explain whatever is being taught. homework/exams are pretty difficult but it all fair game under whatever is gone over in class. DONT CHEGG
Reuter is a great guy. You will for sure learn. His class though is super hard. SOOOO many people fail and drop out of the class. He will mention this in class. He even noted something on this site, see the professor note. He is a great guy though, and an awesome professor, but take everyone's warning, the class is NOT easy in any way. DONT CHEAT!!
Very clear explanation about Mutivariable Calculus.
Great lectures. Amazing professor. You will work for your A.
Listen, he is a cool guy. Will never laugh more in a math class but this class is hard. Homeworks are long. He has challenge problems, which are challenging. He will report you for academic dishonesty, do not test that. Class can be followed generally BUT TESTS ARE HARD. hard. He did jump on a desk though, that was good.
He is the worst professor I ever had. The lecture is dry, boring, and vague. The homework and exams are challenging. So little review material, which is almost useless. The exams are totally different from sample test. The average is about 50 to 70. And he takes academic dishonesty very seriously, you might be reported because you used chegg.
Came to class for the jokes, learned some Calc 3 as well. Go to his office hours, youll gain a worthwhile philosophical knowledge.
Honestly one of the best profs Ive had. Calc 3 is notoriously hard, and I think he does a pretty good job teaching it. GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION. Also dont cheat or use chegg, guy takes it very seriously and you will 100% get caught. You can definitely get an A though if you try.
It's a very challenging class. Go to recitation, read the textbook, go to office hours, make plenty of time available for the homeworks. I think it's advisable to take this class when you don't have too much on your schedule. It can get overwhelming. Matthew is a great professor who will reward hard work, though.
Professor Reuter is a really energetic guy he genuinely enjoys teaching and is willing to engage with students. His homeworks can get frustrating but he is really helpful during office hours and is willing to answer questions. The tests are also usually hard but the median score is a B.
Prof. Reuter is a very good professor. He gives justice to every student who attends class and completes his/her work sincerely. Though he is strict about academic integrity tests are not very difficult. Lectures are fun and you can never get bored of them!
AMS261 was probably my favorite class this semester. The class is definitely difficult, but Reuter does his best to make the lectures as interesting as possible. His jokes were not always funny, but it kept the class interesting. His tests are very fair, but you really need to do homework and study a lot for them.
As someone who has a PhD in terrible Stony Brook professors, Reuter is not one of them. He takes tough calc 3 concepts and turns them into calc 1 and calc 2 problems. He's also someone who gives fun and entertaining lectures. Go to class, do the HW, don't cheat and you'll do fine.
This class is hard but in no way does it get harder because of his teaching. He's very good at explaining concepts and tries his best to keep his lectures engaging. For the love of god please have common sense and do not cheat. Man will hunt you down
His lecture is good but lot of hw. 3 kinds of hw that is lot of work for the student. Don't cheat from online he take it seriously.
he is one of the worst professor I ever had. Lot of hw for the class. web assain, writing hw, challenge problem and his test is so hard. don't take him.
He's a professor, that's one of a kind. He explain the material in a more practical setting, which you can apply in various scenarios and makes you work hard for the grade you want to receive. If you plan on cheating and to bs the class do not take it, trust me when I say DO NOT CHEAT in his class on any assignment bc he will find out.
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT TECHNOLOGY AND MATH. Listen, he isnt a horrible teacher. But he is extremely tough in grading. He doesnt treat everyone equal and he makes his class feel like a 300 level course. Also, watch out with the essay, CITE EVERYTHING.
His lectures are boring and I never really listened to them, but I just looked at the textbook and search online. Homework is a hassle and WILL take time to finish unless you know everything already. His tests are material heavy and he is a harsh grader and doesn't let you write whatever for partial credit so....... good luck!!
I would not recommend anyone taking a class with Reuter. Reuter is a bad lecturer. His lectures tend to be misaligned with homework and exams. If you have to take this class only with Reuter, grab your wallet and get a Chegg subscription for graded homework and projects.
I would not recommend taking this professor's class. First of all, his homework doesn't really match with the textbook and the class lecture. Another thing that is really important in case you take this professor's class is DO NOT CHEAT OR USE ONLINE RESOURCES FOR HOMEWORK. IF HE FINDS OUT HE WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND REPORT TO ACADEMIC JUDICIARY!!
Took this class just for credit as an elective course for my designated major. This class was supposed to be an easy "A", but the professor's grading structure for all material covered in the course was strenuous. I was fortunate enough to receive a "B+" final grade for the course, but I definitely had to work my rear end off . Just be ready!
The class itself is not bad, but the professor of this class makes it bad. Examples are bad lecturing, boring, and irrelevant homework meaning not matching anything from the lecture. His grading techniques are terrible. So I don't recommend taking this professor's class, you feel irksome if you have this professor.
This guy is a great professor. Extremely helpful when answering questions, you can tell he really cares about making sure you understand the material. His dry humor gets me through the lectures.
This is by far the most interesting and well structured class I have taken at SBU. Lectures are helpful and quizzes are fair. The professor replies to emails within minutes and clearly cares about his students and their grades. The clearly intelligent professor makes sure to inform and teach about how difficult concepts apply to the real world.
This guy is a legend. Although he does give quite difficult homework assignments, they are significantly easier than his quizzes, making you very prepared to take his quizzes when the time homes. His lectures are very very very clear and straight to the point and also are very well structured and paced. He explains thoroughly and even makes jokes.
Dont take this class if you are not in AMS major or planning to take this class as Gen Ed elective. Matt Reuter cares more about catching cheating than teaching. He also dont accept any solution that are different that what he showed.
The professors does not support PPT, he just make hand writing on class, and his hand writing is truly bad, I cannot recognize what he write, when I take the exam, He minus 3 point for late submission, because my internet was broken, Just 3 minuets, 3 point. it is so hard to get credit of his class.
He is an unfair cheating hunter; dont take his class!
Terrible Professor, gives little feedback on work and will hunt you down if you cheat. He definitely does not care about his students and grades heavily.
My professor for online AMS-151 course, wonderful professor. My grade was based on 11 homeworks(1 week to complete each), and 5 quizzes. The final was optional. He tries to be funny and cares for students. Method of grading makes up for strict no cheating policies, even if you get low scores, don't cheat. Difficult for me cus calc is hard. :)!
Raters who give this man 5 are either troll or a Matt Reuter himself. He cares about unfairly accuses students of cheating, and failing students more than teaching. Its ridiculous how he takes off points on students paper for work that were rewritten after erased.
Professor Reuter was a very good lecturer especially for an online class which I usually have a lot of trouble paying attention in he was passionate and knowledgable about the subject so that definitely helped The homeworks were pretty long and challenging but the quizzes were really easy and shortThe term paper wasn't bad Overall manageable course
calc 3 is a hard class, imo harder than calc 2, calc 3 with Reuter really didn't click with me I found it hard to understand lectures and wished he put more examples, there's lots of hw in this class and its harder than the quiz's.
Such a stubborn professor who probably enjoys failing students. I was 3.5 points away from passing the class with a C, which I needed to pass for my major. He failed me because I made a very small mistake of clicking a wrong button. If he fixed that mistake and gave me two points more on a rescore for the final exam I would pass.
I have no words for him. He cares about cheating more than the class itself. Don't forget to cite homework answers or he'll get on you! Be ready to set time to the side for his homework because it takes hours. If you want your grade reconsidered, he says to take the optional final. I was 4 points off from a C. Whoever rates him high is a troll LOL
His homeworks are huge assignments and the quizzes/tests won't reflect them 1:1. Optional final, meaning if you're satisfied with your quiz grades, you can skip the final which is nice. He's efficient at organizing material but is just very harsh at grading and will not excuse any late assignments or grant extensions under ANY circumstances.
Do not choose this! Even if you take a lecture, it will be hard to solve homework by yourself because the lecture has little to do with homework and the amount of homework is huge. Memorizing patterns would be a better strategy to get a score than understanding. And you should know, this professor loves to catch plagiarism.
he is an abomination on the AMS department he really sucks at teaching he is the worst prof I have ever had very inconsiderate and cruel no sympathy for anybody at all this guy is complete dick aviod him
Terrible professor, lectures were boring and homework was very hard and he didn't really teach what was going to be on the homework. Very boring professor and tries to make corny jokes. Would recommend not taking him until you are willing to deal with this professor.
I enjoyed his class and his lectures were straight forward. He was also easy to get ahold of if I had problems or questions.
Matt was a good professor who answered any questions the kids had throughout the lecture. He made decisions based on student responses in terms of extending the deadline for homework. His quizzes are sometimes too hard compared to practice questions. It's really a hit or miss for the quizzes because the average is around 27-34 out of 50.
He grades mainly by a variety of short quizzes worth 50 points. This causes the average of the quizzes to be in the range of 20/50. The questions are worded poorly. The review sheet & HWs are not helpful. Not shocking to see that the median score for the semester is 74. Beware! I do not recommend at all. Everyone goes to class but still fails.
Professor Reuter is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very difficult and challenging, but he really cares about the students. Many professors only care about the paycheck and the research, but Reuter is there for the students. It will not be an easy class, but he will make sure he takes the time for you to learn the material.
Lectures don't correlate well with homework, quizzes, as well as research assignments. Use Chegg, and past-year solution as an advantages when doing homework, research paper. In fact bring past year solution manual for quizzes if they end up being open-book/open-note with some restrictions (no calculator, no internet), you'll thank me later.
Prof. Reuter is a very nice professor. He is very friendly to students after the lecture is finished and explains material well during the lecture. I strongly recommend enrolling lectures with Prof. Reuter, he is definitely one of the nicer professors I have been with.
the worst professor ever. he literally is so inconsiderate of students and he wants them to fail.. how sickening. hes obnoxious about chegg and outside resources- you WILL get caught for academic dishonesty if u use it. his homeworks are horrendous and take hours. if u submit something late he wont accept it and you'll get 0%. 1/2
2/2 if you need a tech credit take khans course. this professor is genuinely the worst and has caused me a massive amount of stress. he tells students not to email him and to email his tas. he really just doesnt wanna be bothered. his lectures are boring. im begging u not to take this class. if necessary take at another school n transfer the credit
This guy was absolute full of BS. the term paper was probably the most thought out thing i've ever written but he basically wanted me to dumb it down. His lectures are boring, he talks as if he's the smartest dude in the world, overall very annoying. Don't take this class unless u like the profs that want you to fail.
Sososososososo amazing
Worst professor!!!!!!
BADBADBAD
i just want to be as smart as reuter
All the positive ratings are written by him. Take other class for TECH credit. Paranoid ab cheating & blames random students for it, treating all of them like they're potential cheaters he "must" crack down on. Doesn't accept emails, if u do email him, replies in a passive aggressive way to embarass u. Prob has many internal issues to act like that
Professor Reuter has the potential to be a very inspiring and motivating professor. However, he is way too strict and leaves absolutely no room for real life instances that can prevent you from doing well. His quizzes are open note but the time limit is absurd with the length of his questions. His lectures are prerecorded which is very helpful.
This will probably be your only choice for AMS 261. This fully online class is listed as in-person. The video recordings don't give enough information except a general overview. They do not correlate with HW and 6 Quizzes at all. You are better off watching other people's lectures on YT. Do lots of examples. This class will take up your time.
The lectures are fine but sometimes he can talk too fast or derail off the topic. Doesn't compromise on deadlines at all. If you lose an arm or something be ready to get an F in the assignment. One good thing is that the HW prepares you for the quizzes.
He does talk very fast, but everything is explained really well. I don't come to lecture because of this, but I do watch the recorded lectures when they're posted, and with minimal studying, I'm doing really really well. I am talking an easy class, but I would absolutely take another class of his.
There are quizzes every week, but they have only four questions and are very easy as long as you attend the lectures or watch the Zoom recordings of the lectures. His explanations were good and had lots of visuals. He did not overcomplicate any concepts. The homework had some supplemental reading but were short reads.
ams 103 was soooo light. quizzes and exams were online w respondus, and all homework he gave out was just busy work. he emailed me asking for me to TA for spring sem but i did not enjoy the class enough to do allat. he says that attendance is taken periodically but i honestly don't think he ever took attendance. PLUS all lectures are recorded
the lecture videos give enough but also not enough info at the same time and the textbook is kind of unhelpful. imo the biweekly quizzes are too much when you also have to take other major classes. i think the class is fair but it requires more effort than i expected esp when i have to juggle multiple classes where the topic doesn't come naturally
Biweekly open-note quizzes. Grading for final grade is very lenient. Uses flipped classroom, classtime is used as kind of recitation with 2 classes used with a 3rd one only taking place in case of cancellation. Homeworks have practically unlimited attempts on webassign. Took him Spring 2024. 12 HWs, 6 quizzes, no midterm, optional final.
Lectures are pre-recorded, which you will have to watch on your own time (4- 6 hours of lecture videos for each module). The lectures are unrelated to the homework and the quizzes. I feel like the quizzes are rushed since you only have 30 minutes to take them on Respondus. He's a very passionate professor, but just doesn't teach well.
His pre-recorded lectures didn't help with the hw or quiz watching them was a waste of time. You're better off using YouTube and teaching yourself. Quizzes are most of your grade, with barely enough time to finish and submit. He's strict on submission deadlines and will deducts points. I wouldn't recommend this professor.
His grading system is the most unjustified I've seen. If you make one mistake with the lockdown browser, you will lose points on your quiz. Then you only have one week after grades are posted to bring up to him any questions or concerns. He will end communication with you if you try to get points back that were mistakenly taken away.
I would not recommend this class for AMS261. This class is basically asynch. Watching the lectures barely helps with the homework. It is also easy to fail the biweekly quizzes. The one good thing I would say is that he has an extra credit assignment that could add up to 3 points on your final grade.
Incredibly informative videos, you don't have to go to his lectures, just watch them and take notes. He has bi-weekly quizzes on Wednesdays that are open note instead of big exams, so it's much easier to keep up with. If you are satisfied with your grade by the end of the semester the final is optional.
This professor's project is difficult to understand, and the grading is very strict. But he is a very humorous professor.
Bad professor, worse person. All “good” reviews on here are by him 100%. Obsessed w catching cheating to the point where it's paranoia. Inaccessible and disrespectful if you need help outside of class. Doesn't want to be bothered. Sad
Prof Reuter isnt bad! Although he is a bit of a hypocrite. He told us to buy his $60 textbook that he said the hw would be out of and NEVER used it (literally just posted pics of pages)! hes very fair until he thinks you're using AI..... even though the class is AI-based and he requires you to use ChatGPT. He's very confusing, but overall mid
