Prof Rindge is a nice enough guy, but his class is terrible. He is an extremely hard and in many ways unfair grader. I have gone in to get help a lot and he has never once actually helped me. Class is boring, just him speeding through slides, making it hard to take notes. If you know the Bible it might be okay, but if you don't expect to do poorly.
Dr. Rindge is fun and always full of energy, but refuses to compromise. He goes off on tangents and you can't tell if they are tangents or essential to your knowledge. Notes are always difficult to take and he will not post power points up on blackboard. Essay prompts are vague and grades harshly, plus you NEVER know what he expects.
Expects way too much. Three assingments for whole year all papers. Gave my class take home final because of snow, three 1,000 word essays.
Expects too much. Talks down to everyone. Needs a to become more friendly
Prof. Rindge I thought was a really good professor. He challenges your knowledge and opens up new perspectives of the new testament. Almost have a quiz every class - really easy, just be sure to read the readings. His essays are really hard and he asks for an odd way of writing them. All in all I really enjoyed this class. He is pretty energetic.
Really, I didn't think he was as bad as these other posts say. Yes, he said he wanted certain things in his papers, like no BS, so you actually had to write real stuff and he would grade you down for fluff. It made sense to me. Sometimes his lectures were hard to take notes on, but he was really interesting overall.
Rindge can be pretty tough on the grading, but he allows you to turn in your paper early if you'd like him to edit it and give it back to you. His class is more about the actual text in the bible and the context surrounding it. Usually, it's easier if you don't have a lot of religious background, but if you have an open mind, then you will be fine.
Ok, by far my favorite professor so far. Yes hes difficult and yes sometime i though he expected too much out of a 100 lvl course, but he MADE me want to learn more. For the papers you just need to go into his office with your rough draft and he'll tear it apart so you know how to do better for the final one.
Best religion teacher I've ever had. Knows the Gospels backwards and forwards...explains the Bible very well. Some people say he comes off as unfriendly but he seemed pretty nice to me. Definitely not an easy A but if you'r interested in learning about the Bible take his class for sure.
Not very clear or helpful, grading on the more ridiculous side... not a fan.
Rindge was a very challenging professor who expected students to have an in-depth knowledge of the Bible previous to 100 level class. His sense of humor offended several students in class. He often said essays should be "clear, concise, and cogent," and was relatively tough at grading. However, he knows his stuff. Take him if you want a challenge.
Bible and Morality Class was a mixed bag. You have to do a lot of writing, mostly at least a couple pages a week and a lot of reading. But, the class is fairly easy to get good grades and the readings are not dull. It is basically a philosophy class. Professor Rindge is also relatively liberal, so don't be too scared about it being over religious
He is my favorite professor at Gonzaga thus far.I find his class extremely interesting. Even if you have religious background you will be surprised at how much you WILL learn. He's extremely knowledgeable and also very funny! If you have room in the morning this class is a great way to wake up :) Do the reading + take good notes and you'll succeed!
As a person, he's funny and gets the class going, but teaching-wise not so much, he goes off a lot. His powerpoints are quick with either too much info or too little, moves through topics too quickly. doesn't explain much about papers he assigns (doesn't go over them in class) his grading is tough. quizes are easy points. does not reccomend!!!
He knows his stuff, but is very unclear about his paper and doesnt offer much assistance, doesnt explain or go over the paper. Unfair grader and I would not recommanded him, you learn but its not worth the agony or the stress when writing papers
He is very arrogant and wants you to write whatever he believes on his papers (not what you think/believe). His tests are essay based and way too hard. He has little or no direction on his papers and test. Do the reading. Avoid if possible.
DISCONCERN OLDER POSTS ABOUT WHAT A GREAT PROFESSOR HE IS. TRUST. HE IS NOT. very condescending to almost all the students. Is a very subjective grader of your papers. unfair and expects way too much for a MANDATORY religion class. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
Absolutely terrible overall. Difficult Grader, but not extremely unfair. Vague, tough to follow lectures. Plus, he's arrogant, smug, and not funny. Does not listen to students comments yet he expects involvement. Makes you feel like a complete idiot.
AVOID AVOID AVOID. This man is terrible. Super hard grader, super smug, super arrogant. Quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken at GU. Thought it would be fun watching movies and talking about god.. turns out its just his opinion and if you disagree expect nothing higher then a C.
The reason everyone thinks Rindge is smug is that he's very much a scholar. He's extremely intelligent and it shows in his lectures and the way he speaks. As long as your ideas have support he'll give you credit and good grammar is a must. You will learn a great deal in this class and it's not that difficult. I highly recommend it.
He takes ages to grade written work. He is very narrow in his discussions, never letting the conversation develop organically. More like a formal reading of text class, rather than a class which could aid in spiritual growth. Repeat what this guy wants to hear, write well, and pass the class. Try to avoid if you are looking for a simple rel. cred.
Avoid this professor at all costs, and take any positive reviews of him worth a grain of salt. Rindge is the most pompous, arrogant, condescending teacher I have ever had. He asked my class if we know what Camels were, and was DEAD serious. If that isn't the epitome of RUDE, then I don't know what is. Close-minded prof, DO NOT TAKE.
Terrible Professor. Grades unfairly on 1 page papers that are often worth 10% of your final grade. Do not take if you want an easy religion course.
Cocky. Arrogant. Rude. Treats a CORE REQUIRED 101 CLASS like it is the most important course in a student's life. Only likes papers that agree with him completely and basically list notes from lecture. Looks down upon students. Readings are boring and TONS of reading quizzes.
This teacher was a joke! this was my first ever religion course, he was rude, unhelpful and down grading. I recommend never taking this guy, he is honestly a wanker. Overall i did not learn anything and i was left feeling stupid and not learning a single thing.
I grew up Catholic and this guy made me feel like an idiot. He has a HUGE superiority complex and I got my first C grade on a paper EVER in his class because he didn't like my interpretations. If you don't analyze the bible or any book the way he does, your grade is screwed. NEVER EVER take this guy.
During a summer class he assigned papers on material not yet covered, his methods of grading were inconsistent. The final for the class was 32 questions in 20 min.I emailed him about my final,it took him 4 days to get back to me about a bb mistake that gave me a zero on my final.I completed the class 2 weeks late as a result.
To say the least, he is a genius. His class was incredibly interesting. About one page of the Bible to read every night and a few papers. As long as you back up what you say in the papers, you're fine. He cares about the students a lot. Most importantly, I came out of his class having learned a tremendous amount.
I might have to stop using "ratemyprofessors.com", because from reading all the negative feedback on here you would probably avoid his class-biggest mistake. He's really such an interesting teacher and he makes religion so understandable. Don't listen to the bad ratings-put in the work for this class and you'll get the grade you deserve.
Rindge does not deserve all of the negative feedback on here. It's true that he is not the easiest grader at Gonzaga, but he is extremely intelligent, a good lecturer, passionate about the subject material, and makes the class very interesting. I would highly recommend taking his classes if you have some interest in religion already.
Dr. Rindge is an awesome professor. He goes into great depth about the bible and it's historical context. I thought he was an easy grader but many people find him difficult. He is very willing to read drafts though. I highly recommend and though he is not a Christian he never made me feel like an idiot for my beliefs.
Professor Rindge is an excellent teacher. I was dreading my first religion class here at Gonzaga and I am delighted to say that his was among my favorite and most eye opening classes I have ever taken. Take courses with Rindge!
Pretty clear on what he wants but the overall class is rather difficult. Daily quizzes so read the Bible. Final is ok because he tells you what is on it before you take it. Hard grader on essays though.
All in all he knew his stuff and did a pretty good job of teaching it, however he didn't listen to anyone else's interpretations of anything so it leads students to feel uncomfortable in his class.Papers aren't too bad, and test is ok but i wouldn't recommend him to anyone because it's hard, boring, and uncomfortable
Very knowledgeable easy to talk to but hard grader. Overall the most difficult thing was keeping up with his lectures (he races through power points and doesn't post them online). He does take attendance and gives a quiz close to every day. I would recommend him if the person is genuinely interested in learning about religion.
Hard grader. Will ask a lot of questions, but doesn't necessarily respect others opinions. Quizzes almost every day. Overall, class was interesting, but frustrating.
Professor Ridge is someone who is passionate about what he does and teaches with that passion. The class was very interesting and even though the tests were difficult, I really enjoyed it. You are going to have to work in this class, but I'd say it's worth it.
I took this course online and honestly it was completely unrealistic for a summer class. We had quizzes that were posted at noon and removed by 7 pm, and were assigned a 350pg book with essay finished in 1 week. Overall I felt like I learned more about proper grammar than about religion and my grade is unfortunately a reflection of that.
Rindge is Arrogant, class is interesting and he knows a lot about the subject but makes it harder than it needs to be, read the bible passages his surprise quizes end up counting for more points then youd expect. you have to write 3 2 page papers and do a lot of reading He grades harder than most Eng Profs. overall way too hard for a core class.
I loved Dr. Rindge's Synoptic Gospels. Yes, he expects much from his students and I think that's what makes a great educator. He's highly intelligent, not to mention skilled at religious research and writing. I placed him in my top 5 for GU professor's. Don't pass him up - you'll think about things a little differently after his course.
He expects a lot from his students, but as long as you work for him, you should be fine. All of the quizzes are really easy and he grades the exams and papers pretty easy as well. There's a fair amount of work, but I think he's a fantastic professor. Sometimes he can be a bit pretentious, but I think he's great!
Rindge's classes are very interesting. Attendance is definitely mandatory. There is alot of reading for his classes. Read the bible passages more than once. Overall I really liked him great guy.
HE IS SO HARD if this is your first religion class DO NOT TAKE. He grades essays harder than a 800 level english class, and expects you to basically be Jesus. This is not a joke don't take him.
This class was awesome! Rindge is a great teacher. He's very intelligent, uses a variety of movies and modern examples, and learns everyone's name by the first week of class. The quizzes are difficult, but you should be fine as long as you do the work. The first month of class is the hardest because of the reading. Definitely recommend this class!
Rindge is a great guy. He is funny and uses many modern examples for his lectures. His quizzes are hard so do your reading. It is a pretty tough class but extremely rewarding! I would recommend him.
Dr. Rindge's class was definitely my favorite of the semester. He does grade pretty hard and there is a lot of reading, but the trade off is he makes every class interesting. I would suggest his class to anyone who is okay with working a little harder than normal for a 100 level class, but is interested in having a great professor!
I absolutely loved this class! It was a bit of work though. A lot of reading that didn't necessarily pertain towards quizzes or tests. You should take a lot of notes but his lectures were interesting. Overall a good course to take.
He is a good teacher, just difficult. He rush through things that are on the final and he is a hard grager. Note taking is necessary and so is participation in class.
Really interesting class. Good lectures, awesome movies. However, his grading is unrealistic, and and he has a trick of taking someone's opinion from class discussion and making it fit his view. Basically, he doesn't care about what students think. Takes forever to grade, and doesn't post lectures.
In a 6-week online course I waited for feedback on my work for OVER 2 weeks so no opportunity to "fix" my work before the next set was due. Word-wall PowerPoints for 2nd half of course (why even use PP?). Entire books read-5 minute, 10-question, timed quizzes for the effort. Felt left adrift-like he just didn't care about the class. Not engaging.
Worse professor I have ever taken. Very pompous and unwilling to help or listen to students.
Rindge has been one of my favorite teachers, but I also greatly enjoy the subject matter. He requires you to critically think and carefully read the material as there are pop quizzes. The papers are short but require good analysis.
Dr. Rindge is hands down one of the smartest professors I have ever had; and his knowledge and passion really show through his teaching. He makes lecture very clear but does expect you to understand and know the material. I would suggest this course to a friend.
Rindge is the best. He is extremely intelligent and it shows in his lectures. He does have high expectations but nothing that can't be met. This class was one of my hands down favorites at GU. The introduction to film in relation to biblical texts is fascinating and I was oftened very excited to discuss the films we were assigned for class.
Do not take this professor unless you love to write essays to be grades as if you were an English Major at PhD level. He knows his stuff and lectures are pretty interesting, but grading is awful, unclear, and inconsistent. If you have a good GPA and want to maintain it, DO NOT TAKE COURSES WITH MATTHEW RINDGE.
Class material is very interesting, and I loved the films we covered. I loved our class discussions. Quizzes are difficult, but manageable if you pay attention and do the work carefully. Papers are easy if you follow directions and write concisely. Rindge can be a little arrogant, but he is friendly and funny. I recommend this class!!
He is arrogant and not very helpful. I learned a lot I didn't know about the Gospels but he made his class extremely HARD! It is a lot of work and the final made me want to cry. I would not suggest this class. It is harder and more frustrating than chemistry.
The most arrogant guy I've ever been around. Treats students like they are nothing compared to him. I participated the most in my class and still got a 75 in participation. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Dr. Rindge is an intelligent professor with an obvious passion for his courses. He is not the most personable professor I have encountered at GU, but he pushes students to earn grades. Forget the percentages and focus on engaging in the course, and you're sure to enjoy it and probably get an OK grade.
Dr. RIndge is incredibly intelligent over his material, and if you're open to it can completely change your personal spirituality and give you a new found (and probably better) sense of religion. I would take his classes 10 times over. Most inspirational person I've met. Who cares if the testswork is sometimes hard, it is worth it.
Doesn't update you on grades. Grades unnecessarily hard on weekly discussion posts
This class was an absolute waste of my time. Grades everyone as if you have a phD in religion. I watched every movie and wrote all papers and still ended up with a D-. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Rindge is the most condescending professor I have ever seen. He looks down upon students and even glares at them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Good, relatable teacher. Interesting material. It is tough at times but nothing too terrible in my opinion. Dr. Rindge can be funny at times. He assigns only a couple papers and nightly readings. The papers are only two pages and are highly graded on information rather than english.
Rindge is by no means an easy teacher, but contrary to what other people have said his class is not impossible. If you go to class and take good notes and review them pretty thoroughly before tests, you'll do fine. I really enjoyed this class and Rindge is extremely passionate about what he teaches, as well as being super caring about students.
Learned so much from this class. Professor Rindge is extremely intelligent and he's funny. I didn't expect this class to be as difficult as it was but honestly if you rewrite your notes like he suggests and do all the readings and pay attention to instruction, you should be totally fine. You do have to put in work to do well but it's worth it.
Ridiculously hard, he tells you to write a 2 page paper on a short passage from the Bible and says don't impose your opinion, but its not a research paper. and then after asking the students not to impose their opinion, the required reading for the class are his novels that he has written which are very opinionated. quizzes are so hard. AVOID!!!!!!
If you can, avoid Professor Rindge. This was such a hard class. Yeah, he's a nice guy but his class is a lot of work.
Way too many quizzes. Way too much of a time commitment and definitely not worth it. Terrible curve method so one try hard can ruin the curve for he actual class average.
I know there are a lot of people saying that Professor Rindge is incredibly difficult, but if you truly try and take his advice on how to do well, you can do well! I have taken both RELI124 and RELI390 from him, and both have been great classes. He says the kind of things that others are afraid to say, but are completely true. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
A quiz almost every class, too many papers, too much work for a religion elective. Content and teachings were incredibly interesting and well done, just simply too much. Absolutely bizarre grading scale for the cumulative final. If you're a religion major, he's incredible. If not, stay away lol
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Has ridiculous expectations for a core entry level religion class. Quizzes on the readings every class. Makes you remember exact details from the text and even quotes. Thinks his answer is always right and won't see reason in papers. This class is way too difficult and time consuming for a core class.
DO NOT TAKE. Pretentious, pompous. His opinion is the only right opinion. Asks you to interpret the bible but if its not his teaching then you're screwed. Asks you to watch HORRIBLE films and read his own book that has nothing to do with the content of the course. Ridiculous expectations. Feels like a 300 level course. I should have dropped it.
TAKE A DIFFERENT CLASS! Quizzes daily, too many papers graded much too harshly, with odd grading curve. Quiz content taught after test. Class centered on his own opinions and his book. Uses non-English visual aides. Doesn't share PowerPoints yet lectures too fast to take good notes. Difficult to meet outside class, even skips his own office hours.
There are daily quizzes and lots of reading, but the quizzes aren't hard if you've done the reading. Be ready to write papers. You'll have plenty of preparation time. If you want to do well, you can. Dr. Rindge truly changed my perspective on faith. I wish I could take all his classes.
He was the best professor I had at Gonzaga. He is a brilliant teacher whose insights into film are mind blowing.
Dr. Rindge was one of the most difficult professors I have ever taken class from. We reading quizzes twice a week and read four novels total throughout the course. Do not take this course if you are looking to merely meet the religion requirement. It will be painful. However, I will say that every lecture was intriguing and kept me interested.
The midterm is awful, grades it off of an unspecific curve and the final is double the midterm. Everything is about his interpretation and he never answers questions.
Rindge is an amazing prof, I recommend taking his class.
- Enlightening, but at times tough, class - Passionate about/creative with the material - Makes connections across texts, history, and modern culture - Lots of quizzes on the readings - Quizzes, tests, and essays cover specific things, making it tough to get a decent grade on them - A stickler for participation
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! One of the worst religion classes at GU. I studied for hours and still ended up getting a B-. Just a warning: his opinions are strongly biased & if you don't agree with them/recite them on the exams, you will do awfully. On the positive side, he is a very engaging lecturer. However, I still don't recommend him.
Took his online course this summer and it was horrible. He doesn't tell you what he was grading you on for discussion posts. He didn't post half the lectures he was supposed to. Absolutely horrible experience. This was my first time taking an online course and I will never again because of his class. Also, I will never take another religion course.
Narcissistic and virtually impossible to reason with. As others said- daily quizzes, content taught after test. also, syllabus is wrong so homework is almost always unclear. uses own opinions and book as class material. Uses non-English visual aides. Doesn't share ppts and lectures too fast. doesn't respond to emails, skips his own office hours.
Took this course for a core requirement- big mistake. Completely unreachable through email, and doesnt show up to his own office hours. Not at all accommodating for mental illness and makes students watch films with graphic sexual assault- with no alternative assignments. Assigned films arent always available online. Take ANY other course.
Least favorite class I have taken at GU. Expected it to be enjoyable and thought provoking but was immediately disappointed.
Unrealistic expectations, thinks that we have to agree with what he is saying. Choose a different class before its too late.
Bible and Film was a great class to take and Rindge does a great job teaching it. The lectures he gives are really interesting which makes participation easy. The class is basically made up of watching movies being quizzed on them then discussing how they relate to religion. I really enjoyed the class. I definitely recommend it to everyone!
Super confusing class. Watched a movie every week and took a quiz on it. Quizzes were super specific and the criteria for responses were unclear. Impossible to reach him outside of class and he uses his own books as textbooks. Interesting lecture but if ur, not a film person you will hate it. Not worth your time skip on Rindge.
Very interesting class and Dr. Rindge is a very good professor, but holy crap this class was taken up so much time for a core class. While it was interesting, I recommend taking a class with less work. I found it frustrating that a core class like this was making up the majority of my homework.
If you like a professor who enjoys spending the class boosting their own ego with their highly opinionated lectures, then please take this course. He literally doesn't let others provide different interpretations of what we're learning. So much so, that he made us buy and read his OWN BOOK. Beware, he will antagonize you for his own enjoyment
Dr. Rindge is the worst professor I have ever had. He is highly opinionated and requires his own material (for purchase) and theories. The course requires a lot of reading and has many quizzes. The quizzes are also highly opinionated and seek to rid you of most biases that you have about Christianity, even if they may be accurate. Large ego. Avoid
I would not recommend Dr. Rindge. He does not respond to emails. His expectations are unclear and you never know what to expect. During class he writes down who participates. Be prepared to devote HOURS to watch these movies. The book quizzes are the hardest part so make sure you study for those. He does not grade in a timely manner.
Rindge is as pretentious as a person can get. Spends half of class boosting his ego and bragging about places he's taught. Makes you read his own book which he claims is "a work of art." He's narcissistic and should just get a room with himself.
For Bible and Film you are expected to watch one movie per week and then do a discussion board post (that part is easy). Then there is the reading which is heavy on the bible or his book he makes you buy. Overall the weekly and book quizzes are hard. He will NEVER RESPOND to your emails (sent four the past week asking for help with the final paper)
Professor Rindge acts so entitled and self-absorbed. He talks about himself and his accomplishments for half of the class time. Also forces you to read his own work of art book which is absolutely atrocious. Would not take this class again if my life depended on it.
Worst teacher I have had in my entire scholar career. He has awful communication skills- doesn't respond to emails, boring lectures, tough grader, and gives an unfair amount of homework for a core religion course. I highly suggest to avoid this professor as much as you can.
I really liked this Rindge class. It was interesting to dig deep into film arguments. He goes through biblical texts in depth so if you have no prior knowledge of the bible, you'll be alright. Aside from some problematic scenes (esp. rape/predatory scenes), the films were all fun to discuss. He'll also take the time to explain anything confusing.
Dr. Rindge is very intelligent, but not the best in terms of relating to his students. Very particular in what he wants from assignments and essays, but his lectures are thought-provoking at the very least.
Took RELI 107 Life and Teachings of Jesus over summer 2021 and they switched to this professor at the last minute. Would NOT recommend taking this professor for an online asynchronous class. Does not post grades so I didn't find out until grades for the term were due. Does not provide any feedback on essays. C- on my final with no feedback.
Professor Rindge was one of the worst professor I've had. He constantly forces his own opinions on the class and does not respect student responses. While he taught interesting material, It did not make up for his extremely tough grading requirements. He never responds to emails and consistently brushed me off when I visited during office hours.
Rindge was fine. He never responds to emails even after approaching in class, so it is super difficult to get in touch with him. The class was interesting sometimes but you are graded on very few things and he makes you buy his own book (which you get tested on). He is one of the most pretentious people I have ever met! Would not take again.
Worst professor ive ever had. He is not willing to accommodate no matter the circumstances. He never responded to my email His class is so boring it will put you to sleep. There is a quiz every single class. His material is awful. He makes you buy the book he wrote. Overall I would take any other religion class at this school before bible and film
Although Professor Rindge is one of the smartest professors I've had, this class was awful. This class took up so much of my time, even though it was a core class. He makes the class more difficult than it should be and expects too much out of students that are mostly taking this for core. Furthermore, he lacks office hours and doesn't check email.
Worst professor I have ever had. He is extremely pretentious and he never responds to emails. Interesting idea for a class but not worth it if you have him. He is also a super tough grader and all his feedback is very opinionated. Warning everyone I know to NEVER TAKE HIM.
Cares very much about his subject matter (although it is an interesting choice on Gonzaga's part to choose a white professor to teach a class about blackness) His lectures always contain really interesting information but reading is very mandatory and the reading quizzes will be often and excessively difficult. Could focus more on learning vs quiz
Not only does he not give feedback on papers before the next ones are due, he hasn't graded assignments from the first week despite my final being today. None of my papers were graded before the final and I could honestly not even tell you my grade in the class. His study guides consist of only the number of questions instead of any content.
This guy is a CHUMP. Never seen someone who so profoundly thinks he's The Man. He thinks his vast knowledge of this absurd field entitles him to hand out difficult tests, papers and quizzes every week. He grades papers very difficult, and he's the only one who can be right during lectures. Guy is trash.
Rindge makes you take a quiz almost every class period. Be prepared to never get a response to your emails, and have no idea what grade you have in the class. This was THE worst class I have ever taken at Gonzaga. The lectures were interesting, but not worth the outrageous amount of reading that had to go into a single core class.
Took this class to fulfill a req thinking it was going to be relatively fun. It was the opposite. Instead of being stimulated in class and engaged with the topics, I was more worried about writing down everything Rindge said because he would reiterate that it would show up on the final. Even then my notes did not help. Do not take this class.
Only thing used for exams was readings and lectures and never posted notes online. Has a strict no technology policy where with each use of tech, he would take a letter grade off of your participation. Very tough grader on papers and exams. Lots of reading before each class with a quiz each class on reading. Overall I highly do not recommend.
Dr. Rindge is nice but will never respond to emails. I emailed him asking for help a week before an assignment was due multiple times, he didn't respond, and then gave me a bad grade. He has quizzes every class that are meant to check if you did the homework but instead they're ridiculously specific and hard. The class is super interesting, though.
If you do not have a real interest in film, do not take this class. But as someone who is interested in film, I quite enjoyed the lectures. Ringe has a really interesting perspective on just about everything, but he definitely can be very self-aggrandizing. Watch the movies closely, and you'll figure out what to look for in the quizzes. Hard grader
Religion & Film wasn't very challenging but Rindge is VERY ambiguous when it comes to instructions for assignments. He is EXTREMELY difficult to get in touch with; he never responds to emails. All you do is read, watch movies, and take quizzes. There's 1 final paper and weekly discussion posts. Not bad but not great.
I would not recommend this class to anyone, especially if you're taking it for just a religion core. This class had such a heavy workload that I couldn't focus on my other classes. I know several others who had to drop this class because it is just too much and the professor expects far too much. Quizzes and exams are also just ridiculously hard.
Haven't finished class yet but would NOT recommend. Quiz's every class on homework but extremely tedious and hard. Lectures entire class and expects you to know what every lecture was about. TAKE NOTES. 7 page final paper. Doesn't respond to emails for at least a week and doesn't know how to use Canvas. Class isn't interesting & not worth bad grade
This professor is not good at all! if you try to reach out he never responds in time for a question you may have. All assignments given are at the end of the semester so you better hope your schedule aligns with his because if not he puts in ZERO EFFORT in accommodating meetings. The course is extremely boring and movies will put you to sleep.
Provides terrible feedback! All assignments given barely have a description of what he wants to receive a good grade, so he is setting you up for failure. If needing credits don't take this class because he will make you want to jump off a cliff.
I really enjoyed the content of this class. Homework isn't unreasonable and lectures are fun if you come prepared (having watched the movies and/or read the text). Most of the heavily weighted assignments are in the last few weeks and the final so that is difficult. No study guides. TAKE NOTES IN CLASS
No. Just simply: No. He has been my least favorite professor BY FAR at GU. You have readings that are multiple chapters long every single class, you have quizzes every class (4 questions each so if you get one wrong you're already screwed), and his exams are literally impossible. Expects you to remember every detail from New Testament/gospels. NO!!
One movie a week (which you are expected to watch VERY closely), one biblical text assigned a week (can vary from one page of reading to 40), along with various readings from other texts (ex. his own book that he wrote). Email response game is weak. Quizzes every class. You'll learn a lot but at what cost :') He's well-intentioned but intimidating.
Bible in film is easily one of my least favorite classes I have has the displeasure of taking at Gonzaga. Some of the films we are forced to watch are a complete drag, notably Dogville and Smoke Signals. I personally could not stand the class and he also makes you feel rather dumb if you share different views on the assigned movies.
Worst mistake I have made here so far is taking this class
This class is a lot of work for a core corse. Throughout the week, you will watch a film, read a biblical text, and read other material. You will also be taking daily quizzes as well as 2 quizzes over the other texts. He is a tough grader when it comes to the 3 papers that you have to write. There are no study guides so take good notes.
I do not recommend this class. It is extremely tedious as you have a quiz each class and are required to read a text and watch a movie that ranges from 2-3 hours long. Lectures are heavy and if you don't take notes- you're screwed. Will call on you on the spot and will challenge your answer. Final is super heavy and you have to write many papers.
Don't take this class. He treats it like it's a core class when it's not, and the 3 credits are not worth it. I've read everything Rindge has assigned, studied it, and somehow it is not enough to understand what he's trying to teach. I'm not the only student that has had issues with this class and please DO NOT PUT YOURSELF THROUGH THIS CLASS.
Professor Rindge is a great lecturer, and thats about it. This class is ridiculously hard for it being a religious credit requirement of this school. His grading is tedious and tough, quizzes almost every class which are almost always fill in the blank. You'll put more effort in this course than any and it will probably be your worst grade.
The 126 written reviews on this professor say a lot. He uses old incomplete lecture slides that he doesn't give students access to. Along with the excessive effort, the class content and structure are just boring; he assigns reading and then talks about it during lectures. Not worth the time or energy to take this professor.
Assigned lots of reading from bible and books (one of which HE WROTE) to do other assigned tests. Quizzes basically every class, so must do readings to get good grades. Lectures are dense and hard to keep up with. Not a lot of info on slides and never given access to slides either, and so you have to write everything he says.
Professor Ringe is a good lecturer but besides that it is hard to learn in his class. Doing everything you can, going into office hours, studying for hours, and this class will still be one of the hardest class in the semester. Pop quizzes when he feels like it, vague slides, and just for 3 credits is not worth it at all. Please do not take him.
Be prepared to read alot in this class. You'll have around 4 books to purchase unless you have he bible. Attendence matters. He's very lecture heavy and if you miss class he will not have the slideshow. No phone. Have to use notebook. You'll have a pop quiz every time you do a reading. His grading is harsh. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS SAVE YOURSELF!
Incredibly unstructured and the students have to pay the price. The worst course and professor experience I've had since coming to GU.
This class is a lot of work, with weekly films, readings, and quizzes. The professor is tough but fair, and you'll learn a lot if you stay engaged. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for my study prep.
Be prepared to watch a lot of films and read tons of texts. Quizzes every class, and the final is demanding. Lectures can be engaging, but prof is intimidating. Unstuckstudy helped me prep for the heavy workload.
Stay away at all costs--protect yourselves PLEASE!
Nice man. Horrible mid-term and final- Rindge if you are reading this just do a long answer or MC (forget about the 5 planned essays I didn't learn anything). Lots of reading/pop quizzes. 1/3 of class dropped before the mid-term.
Professor Rindge is skilled in his field, but very intimidating and expects a lot from students. Expect weekly films and bible readings and quizzes every class. 3 big papers are assigned within the last 4 weeks of class. Lectures are very long but matter to prep for final because he offers 0 review. Take a different religion course if you can.
His class is hard but there's ways around it. For the books, use the internet, bible's are free if you search them up as well(he wont call on you unless you have a physical bible). Take ALOT of notes and do NOT miss class. His 107 class is do-able if you follow these rules but if possible stay away. Harsh final/midterm no study guides…but hes cool
He is alright but if you can take another professor DO IT. His grading is difficult and on reading quizzes he asks about specific details that weren't even part of the big idea. We did quizzes ALL the time. If you do what he asks you should be fine but you have to put a lot of work in. Go to class and take good notes
Interesting lectures, nice guy, but awful awful class. Not worth the effort- one of those professors who prides themselves on giving students bad grades regardless of your effort. Final and midterm are impossible. Swap this class immediately. I invested more time in this class than any other and still got the worst grade on my transcript.
Pick another class unless you want to spend most of your time suffering on useless homework.
I truly don't know why Dr. Rindge's ratings are so bad. He's not harsh at all, just asks for effort. He was a great professor, both knowledgeable and passionate about his field. There is a fair amount of reading assigned, but nothing unmanageable. 5-question MC quizzes once a week. Make use of his office hours for paper(s)! He gives good feedback.
He knows so much and is so impartial. If you do the reading and go over notes before quizzes and exams, you will do great. He is really smart and really cares about what he is teaching. His lectures are so captivating and I would go home and tell my parents all about them. Just do the reading!
Terrible class, terrible grader, borderline narcissistic. He is one of those professors that prides themselves in making a hard class and giving students bad grades. Good luck if you miss a lecture because he doesn't post anything or information about what you missed. Only redeeming quality is the contents interesting and his lectures are engaging
Death, taxes, and Rindge being worse than Hitler. I'd rather walk my cat on a beach in a hurricane than take this class again. He thrives off failure, bashes Trump constantly, and grades like he's out for blood. It's supposed to be about the Bible, but it felt like a front-row seat to academic hell. Total disaster.
a contradiction - says he cares about justice and treats students like we dont matter. I asked for help and did't get it.
Rindge is nice, but doesn't put effort into teaching. Exams are based on lectures, and he doesn't record class or post slides. There's an unreasonable amount of reading required, pop quizzes consistently. He requires you buy his book. Slides and syllabus appear 10 years old. He was grading spring break assignments during our final. Try to avoid.
Nice guy just felt like an isolated course without a guide, very limited responses to inquiries or conflicts, and very material heavy.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! he was interesting to listen to but he was a tough grader and wasnt very nice.
He was a good professor, he is knowledgable. 107 isn't super easy and there's quite a bit of reading. There are also a few papers which are graded somewhat hard.
Dr. Rindge is a super interesting lecturer with lots of knowledge and a clear passion for the subject. There are weekly quizzes but they are easy as long as you have watched the movie and there is extra credit. Besides that, three papers toward the end of the semester. Make sure to take take good notes!
Expects you to basically become Jesus of Nazareth. Quizzes every class on 20 page readings and does not quiz on important concepts, only small stuff it feels like. If you can't basically memorize the entire Bible, good luck. Almost seems like he wants his students to struggle. KISS YOUR GPA GOODBYE!
Extremely tough grader. Does not preface how important taking notes is for final exam. There is A LOT of homework in this class and your grade will not reflect all the work you put in.
Dr. Rindge is an intelligent professor with interesting lectures. The people giving him negative reviews on here (at least for Bible and Film) are 100% using ChatGPT or lacking in the IQ department. If you enjoy watching movies, and can handle reading and thinking critically about the medias he presents, you will be fine.
