My favourite professor of all time. I am a humanities student who took PHY100 as a breadth requirement and he made class so fun and engaging. I wanted to learn and do my work. He has a great personality and is very approachable and understanding. Always willing to help you and doesn't require you to be highly skilled in math.
Probably my favorite professor this semester. His lectures were so engaging- the only lectures I went to after the first month. He actually cares about the feedback given throughout the course and listens to the student's opinions. There are many places to easily get extra marks. Definitely recommend PHY100 especially if you need the breadth.
So many live demonstrations. Total G.
Very difficult to learn from. Nearly illegible handwriting on slides made it hard to follow along. Teaching style was unstructured, and the lectures often didn't align with the textbook well. Exams were also overwhelming, with way too many questions to reasonably complete in the time given.
Prof.Matthew is really nice and always willing to provide help if you needed. Tbh the pace of his teaching is inconsistent during the lecture, however this is the only cons I can think about, everything else is great beside that. Go to his office hours if you don't understand anything, his office hours really helps! That's how I get an A+!!!
I am taking PHY131. Most amazing physics prof. The tests might be tough if you did not take physics before, but he explains everything very well and also a very nice person to talk too. I would definitely recommend taking this course. He is also engaging by having live demos every single class. I wish there was more of the semester still left.
Whether you will take his class at UofT, mind that the average grade for Term Test 2 Winter 2025 was 55. He is unlistenable, even though trying to be hilarious. His explanations will rather confuse you than make you understand physics. His lecture and material are way too off from the textbook, good luck to those who are surviving this class
Prof Robbins is easily one of the best professors I have had so far. His passion about the subject shows during his lectures. He has plenty of office hours, it is clear that he cares about each of his students. Beyond teaching, Professor Robbins is approachable and kind. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking PHY131 in the future!
How a newcomming professor can be so bad? Where do they find them?
I dont agree with the negative reviews although he was not my fave teacher either but no one can thread other students with suspension jjjjjjjj people who put that lie and were threatening other person should be suspended for violating free speech in uni of toronto. we are in Canada,, second law of constitution that's not ok people
RMP is a platform for subjective student opinions. Unless a review contains threats, hate speech or personal information, opinions are protected under Canadian law. Attempting threaten students over critical reviews—including impersonating the Department Team—is unacceptable. Students have the right to freely express their experiences without fear.
another Rate My Prof drama in UofT :)
I donno if it was him or his favorite students but couple comments where theh threatened to kick out other students from uni for the negative review. rate deleted these threats because they were against rules. for me Matthew was okay but labs were insane
Once asked him if I could be excused from a practical as I had a midterm that overlapped with the timeslot of the practical and he automatically assumed I had double booked my courses (purposefully overlapped my course lecture with my physics practical). I hadn't. God forbid I have courses outside of PHY131, and god forbid those courses have evals.
I was scared of physics and wasn't ready to start during Fall with Harlow, but that was my mistake. Matthew seemed kind, but he was far from best profs during first year. Billion of pop up quizzes during lectures, extremely hard practicals, very complicated tests. Just go to Harlow
Best professor in the whole world.
Loved his teaching style and live experiments
He was good I guess. I still don't understand physics haha but I guess it's Me problem
I dropped that class after the term test exams. The workload is unreal, and the exams. Unless you are a great physics student or have PhD in this class its extremely hard and he made it like that
He is a very good prof as he holds many office hours. His exams are simple and he is one of the best people in the department. He does demonstrations in class. You are in good hands with me. So as someone who took the class, I encourage you to avoid Harlow and take it with the GOAT Dr Matthew in the winter.
Pros: Passionate and enthusiastic about physics, homework was ok, experiments were cool Cons: Labs hit or miss depending on group, lecture notes/solutions illegible 90% of the time, or no solutions for homework/practice problems, often makes mistakes on solutions TLDR: his passion for physics doesn't carry over to the quality of teaching
The prof is very kind and very enthusiastic about physics. His test questions can be tough, but I believe they are always very fair. But that's with any courses at uoft that the tests are always tough. I think he did amazing considering he is very young and if you pay attention in his class it is quite doable to get about 80!
Overall not a pleasant experience. Awful labs where you are running for couple hours doing your best and then receive a weird grade, not approachable angry TAs, big amount of class quizzes, not understandable solutions to problems. What supposed to be an introduction course without prior knowledge was if I had all that knowledge already
I was stressed through the whole course of physics with Matthew. Maybe he is approachable in tete a tete conversation about certain question. however I was spending all my time on physics I did not have any time at all on my other classes and still was very behind because of the workload he gave to us. Labs are another conversation.
PHY131 with Prof. Robbins was one of the hardest experiences in my life, even though it should have been an introduction course into University Physics without prior knowledge. Tests were tough, confusing labs, online quizzes, and each new class. The grades with him was like getting on the top of a high mountain.
Professor Robbins may be better suited to teaching upper-year courses or supervising PhD students. For an introductory course, however, I personally found his lectures too difficult to follow. I often felt lost and not smart enough to keep up. Also the exam were too hard.
Very very tough professor
Easiest A+
“Easiest A+” is the most ridiculous thing one could say about Mathew class)))))
Prof. Robbins. I truly appreciate your passion for the lecture content, it made the course more engaging. If there's any possibility of adjusting our final grades to better reflect the hard-work many of us put in throughout the term, I believe it would be greatly appreciated by the entire class and reflected in our course evaluations.
It might be the easiest course Robbins has ever delivered, but many of us were students who had just graduated from high school, coming from diverse educational backgrounds and systems. An introductory course should serve as a foundation to prepare students for university level learning, not resemble an advanced physics course in difficulty ;(((((
You'll understand why people complain about this course. I don't even see the point of mentioning that he will become the department chair when this is only his first year teaching at uoft.
Tough course, bad TAs
Horrible, tough, not as an introduction class.
Compare Harlow rate and Matthew, after that read the room and decide what is better for your GPA and mentality
easiest labs
easiest exams.
I now had to ratake this class because it was so strict and hard but surely not with him, only Harlow
I'm saddened by some comments here. Many of us struggled in PHY131, as shown by the low test averages. I put in real effort but still found the labs and exams very difficult. It's unfair to dismiss our feedback all student voices, especially those who struggled, deserve to be heard and taken seriously. I hope the instructor team reflects on this.
Best professor ever!
Best professor
best professor ever
YOU SEE EVERYONE THE PREVIOUS COMMENT !! SHE GOT AN A YET SHE STILL HATES THE PROF ! SO DONT WORRY YOU ARE IN EXCELLENT HANDS.
even though this is a first year course, The course is structured too difficult
Birdy birdy course 🕊️🦜🦆🦅🐣🐥🦢🐓🦃🦉🐧🐤🐦🦤🪶🦩. I promise if you take it with Matthew (not Harlow) you will get an A+.
Best professor. All PHY131S students love you
I had the worst experience ever with this dude his tests were too hard, his lectures were barely understandable just avoid
He won the best professor at the department of physics for the 2025 year. He offers the easiest labs and the most productive lectures. Please take PHY131 with him in the winter for a free A
BEST PROFESSOR IN THIS UNIVERSITY
unlike harlow, he makes the concept extremely clear. the easiest component of the class was his labs !
Very bad professor that, mind you, put positive feedbacks for himself because he can't live knowing students hate him, what a joke
Super tough content compared to Harlow's section. My worst decision at uoft.
Biggest complaint is that he never properly solves the majority of in-class problems, either refers you to another time that he (incompletely) solved a similar problem or does half of the solving in his head. Extremely hard to follow if you do not have a background in physics. Tests are pretty difficult also, though grading is very lenient.
He was the worst prof I ever had with ridiculously hard problems, hard exams, his material is separate from textbook and if you missed his lecture and cannot find explanation on YouTube or Chat is not explaining content — well, good luck — you will be lost in his class
BESTTTTTTTTTT PROFFFFFFFFFF
never explain questions in class, assume we all understand tests and exams are so challenging for people without secondary school physics
I used to love physics since high school, it became one of my most favorite subjects during my former Bachelor's. He however made me hate this class to the bones. I was scared to go on his lectures, with that TAs were failing our labs, exams were extremely tough. I would strongly suggest students to avoid his class
good luck fam with the hardest prof in the uni, his surprise quizzes, hard hard exams, confusing labs, homework that won't prepare you for the final at all 🫡😎
Great lectures, hard labs and exams.
currently struggling studying for the midterm. do not take the course he's so bad. he skips half the problems and wastes his time saying “what can i clarify about this?” after making absolutely no sense. i cant imagine what the midterm and final will look like. theres also so many components to the course that aren't worth alot. labs are annoying.
AVOID THE COURSE!
Why was a mini term test averaged 60?
took the course last year. he was really bad and he apparently still is. he thinks he can beat Harlow but Harlow all the way. very poor structure of the course also the labs are bad
He is the same level are Carolyn Seaflon which was a bad prof too. the physics department really needs to have good profs for a course like this. The profs make it hard for no reason. Don't take it unless its with Jason Harlow.
midterm tomorrow so nervous the avg was 60 for the quiz
he clearly has a passion for the subject which i do respect but the course is absolutely not organized how an intro level course should be. he doesn't provide enough info for solving problems during lectures (never fully shows his work or provides formulas) and his labs ask too much for the 2 hrs you get. very difficult to actually learn anything
Very bad midterm im dropping the course! dont take this prof.
man sometimes I should read the room before joining bad classes
DO NOT TAKE THE COURSE. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE MIDTERM!!!
Y'all just don't want to do hard things
Best university professor and winner of the teaching award (Department of Physics uoft' 25). Known for the easiest labs and straightforward questions.
“What can I clarify about this question? Great! Let's do a voting question!” Honestly he is cute and accessible. He is also very helpful. But he sometimes did not finish a hard question completely and sometimes we didn't have chance to finish the questions before he wrapped it up. His labs and term tests are very hard with respect to Intro level.
Exams are awfully HARD for a first year physics course (averages constantly low) and no curving. Prof is ok at teaching but there are 3 MIDTERMS. I understand this is university but many of us have never taken physics before and it's just way too difficult and too much work for an intro to physics class. Hopefully changes are made for the future
best professor to exist on this earth. uoft is so lucky to have him. He should be promoted as the chair of dept of physics at uoft.
Crazy Profs. How can an intro physics become so hard? I think it is definitely harder than PHY151
His lectures were so confusing. If you went in knowing what was going to happen and understanding the concept, the minute you come out, you would be so confused, like, "What just happened?"
Every time I had to go on his lectures, I didn't use a seat belt just for the chance to never appear there. Avoid by all means
When the professor post solutions for his homework or practice tests, he tends to write -> follow q5 solution which he only wrote a sentence and not a written step by step solution. TestS are hard; class averages are always near 50%. Silly mistakes can cost you 1/3 of the grade Lectures are mandatory since he posts Top hat questions in class.
Worst class ever. Genuinely. Wish the prof would take more accountability for how hard this course is for an INTRO to physics class. INTRO!! Its not that we "dont want to do hard things", its frustrating when the amount of work we put in is ruined by the exams. this course needs a full re organizations and EASIER EXAMS!!
I genuinely fell in love with physics. His class is actually amazing !
LOVE HIM. SO MUCH!
Have the midterm with him and dropped the class. He is definitely not for intro physics. One of the hardest professors in this university. I feel that he hates students
1. His explanations of assignment questions are overly brief. 2. For PRA Week 2, students without much background need to start the work before class in order tofinish it during the session. 3. His notes do not provide detailed or complete steps, yet marks are deducted on exams if any stepsare missing.
Bro, his powerpoints and the solutions to question are crazy. A lot of them are wrong. Super Terrible professor.
He cannot do the questions designed by himself!
I like him
genuinely great class, great prof it was my favorite out of my 5 first year fall semester courses. Even let us take 0.5x fisheye photos of him after the last lecture. As long as you study you'll do well.
From unorganized top hat questions, where solutions are often incorrect. The constant jumping between documents, "go to slide x to find the answer or follow the method," feels like reading a recipe when the document is supposed to have solutions, but you spend more time finding the solutions than working. With his lisp, he cannot explain concepts
This professor is actually disabled, speaking on behalf of the hundreds in this course.
He seems like a nice guy but with his lisp, at times, no one can understand him. The problems he designs don't seem to help as much as just confuse students on already complex concepts and he's not very good at explaining solutions. A lot of disorganization as well. If you get this prof, you might as well teach yourself.
He is a good person, unfortunately he just can't teach. His hand writing is a total disaster. When giving out solutions for assignments, he only wrote the concept that should be applied instead of the full solution. Don't ask for a regrade because a lot of people say it will decrease your grade. His voice is kind of annoying. Traumatic experience.
Got good grades but at what cost. The course it self was fine, but this prof was just insane, run away as fast as possible.
He don't even know what is going on...
How did he even become a professor when he cannot teach
genuinely couldnt understand what he was saying in lectures or what he was writing. not a very good teacher but he does make it clear what topics will be tested
His class was a gpa killer. Just take the course over the summer
He clearly cares about his students and is passionate about physics. Tests were easy and very similar to provided practice problems. Solutions for practice problems were sometimes hard to navigate.
Keep crying y'all lol physics ain't for you lots complaining
he is a nice but as a prof I genuinely couldnt understand what he was talking about. his voice was always so loud, messy handwritings and NEVER PUT THE FULL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS. he just gave u the method to solve it and if u didn't take physic in high school, good luck! EXAM IS TOMORROW AND THEN IM DONEE WITH TOPHATS AND FREAKING PRACTICALS.
such a jolly fellow and such a joyous class. would 100% take this class again just for the tophat questions. no matthew slander tolerated.
Teaches physics well conceptually but you might have to reread stuff to truly get it mathematically. His handwriting is pretty bad so its hard to read the stuff he writes or posts. Overall he's a good professor who cares about his students
Lectures were disorganized and rushed, with little effort to explain concepts clearly. Grading felt arbitrary, feedback was minimal, and questions were often brushed off. Office hours were unhelpful, and overall the class felt more like a burden than a learning experience.
Unprepared and hard to follow. Slides were read word for word, questions were discouraged, and exams tested material never properly covered. Feedback was vague, grading felt inconsistent, and there was little concern for whether students actually understood the subject.
Such a cute proffesor, really passionate. Teaching method could improve! (Demostrations were so fun, but content explanation was average)
Something you can tell right away about Prof. Robbins is that he's super passionate about what he teaches! His lectures are very engaging (thanks to many physics demos) and goes through lots of practice problems during the lectures, so it's definitely important to keep up with the material. My only complaint might be his handwriting though...
