Very helpful and nice. If you go to office hours and ask for help he will help you. Weekly pop quizzes that are easy if you read but must pay attention to detail at times. Lecture notes will be very helpful for studying and the essay assigned. Must attend class to fill in missing lecture note information. Overall, a good class. It's not difficult.
The pop quizzes were super detailed. We read two books as well as a LOT of journals/studies and posted chapters from other texts. You need to read a lot in this class. The midterm was tough and based on a combination of all the readings and lectures, but the final was much easier and based primarily on lecture notes. Exams are multi choice.
If you read and attend class regularly you will pass with a B or higher. Guaranteed. There will be lots of reading but some or all of the articles are provided online. Love this guy!!!!!
He is a great professor, you can tell he actually wants to be there. He does show movies in class but they are actually helpful and related to what we are learning in class. The books he has us read are really good reads and easy to read but some of the weekly readings are super boring but you have to read them to pass the pop quizzes.
His pop quizzes are super detailed and difficult. He grades really tough without giving us a rubric and gives the prompt out after you read the book so you're forced go back and waste time finding specific examples. This class is easily one of the most difficult ones I've taken at UCR.
Really good lectures. He's an amazing lecturer for sure, but he does give out pop quizzes (usually on Wednesdays) based on the reading, but if you read the lecture slides, which he posts the day before lecture, you'll pretty much get a 10 on the quiz. Paper prompt is pretty straightforward, and midterms are alright.
No textbook but there are articles he posts on iLearn that you are required to read before each lecture because he gives out pop quizzes. Attendance is required because the exams are based off of his lecture power points. Even though he posts them online you have to go to class to fill in the blanks. Pop quizzes, 2 midterms, 1 paper, 1 final.
I don't normally write good reviews but this professor is pretty awesome. Awesome in a sense that he keeps the class interesting and he won't throw you under the bus with impossible material. He gives you everything u need to know, just read and do your assignments and you'll be okay. Plus he is also very open to helping his students..
Lecture slides have blanks, so go to lecture. Pop quizzes based on readings (there's a reading for every lecture). (Supposed to have a quiz weekly, but we only got 4 throughout the entire quarter.) Two midterms (15% each), 1 final (25%). Also 1 paper (25%) but should be a piece of cake. Also section participation - just show up.
Rontondi is a great professor. His lectures are easy to follow, even when the material is dense. He makes himself available. He is organized and sticks by his syllabus. His exams are based directly off the powerpoints, so study those and the exams are not too bad. Pop quizzes are based off readings, but only worth 10%. He is very fair.
This class was hard in general since it was about research and methods. The tests were hard bc there was so much material to cover. There are daily readings and weekly pop quizzes. Two midterms (if i remember correctly), one final, and a research proposal paper. Professor knows his stuff tho, and he's a good professor.
good professor overall. Lectures are interesting for the most part. You have 1 midterm during week 6 , a paper due week 8 and final. Weekly pop quizzes so you must be in class for them. His tests are easy as long as you review your notes. (he posts notes before every lecture, you still need to attend lecture to fill in the blanks)
Professor Rotondi's a really friendly guy who's good at what he does. Your assignments include 3 worksheets which provide a basis for your research proposal (due week 8). Midterm + final exams. POP QUIZZES. Do the reading. Also, no laptops! Print out the notes beforehand. This wasn't an easy A but it's doable.I'd gladly take another class with him.
Professor Rotondi is one of my favorite sociology teachers at UCR. I had him two quarters winter soc169 and spring soc159. He does a great job explaining and TEACHING his lectures which is huge. I never read and managed to pass every pop quiz but his midterms are kind of hard so definitely study hard for those!
he makes lectures confusing by posting the slides but having pieces missing so you have to attend lecture to get the missing information. missing one lecture can really mess you up. other than that it's a lot of reading and understanding research methods, pretty straightforward
Rotondi uses class time efficiently and sticks to schedule. All readings are posted online. Gives pop quizzes on the readings (usually true/false, make corrections to the false). Cares about students doing well. One 8-12 page term paper. Made time for me to review my midterm & answer all questions. Fun to talk to if you visit his office hours.
Great professor, received a B. Pop quines are tough, failed a few after doing the reading. Read ahead of time and study your reading notes before every class! Most quizzes are T/F, and if it is false you have to write in the correct answer. Attend class, that is how you know material. Text books compliment class but do not cover everything.
His lectures will definitely have you laughing, he's such a great professor. Focused a lot on the theorists so know how to differentiate them all. Definitely attend lectures & READ ALL OF THE READINGS. There are pop quizzes, stay ready and aim to pass them all! He is a great professor, you have to do the work. 3 Exams, 1 Paper, & Final (this qtr).
Love him as a professor. He's one of the best professors I've had at UCR. He's super organized with the schedule and cares about his students. He really wants us to learn and pass. The class does take actual effort so it's not for the lazy. He's also pretty funny and his lectures are not boring.
A lot of reading, one paper, one midterm and one final. He is one of the best professors at UCR, if you want to learn he is the one.
Took him last quarter and I can honestly say that you can't go wrong with taking him. Make sure to get the books and READ. He does pop quizzes (10pts) on the readings and they make a difference in the end. There's 3 exams, a paper, and the final (cumulative) and it's all doable as long as you show up, read before class, and ask for help. Simple.
Professor Rotondi is great. He does require a lot of reading and pop quizzes but honestly, all you need is to do his readings and go to class to pass. He doesn't make it boring, he tries to crack jokes here and there, and he's super sweet. I just regret not trying harder. But overall a good experience.
The class is very easy if you do the readings. Pop quizzes based on readings. The readings are not hard to get through just don't be lazy. Very passionate about the subject. Great lecturer. Review lecture slides before the tests.
Rotondi is one of the best professors i've had at UCR. He is really passionate about what he teaches so that makes the class all the more interesting. You HAVE to do the readings because he WILL give pop quizzes, but they're not bad at all. All in all, I loved this class. It was my favorite of the quarter.
Get ready to memorize everything. Test are based on memorization skills. Last minute slides. If you have good memorization skills and do not want to learn much I would recommend this professor.
Test are not clear, difficult to understand
Worst professor ever, do not take him for any of the courses that he teaches.
One of my favorite professors! I've had him for a few classes. Must print out the notes and take them to class to fill out blanks - no laptops, but he's really engaging and loves teaching. Paper was doable, tests were relatively easy. Just study the slides, really. Looking forward to taking him again.
He is a great professor, doesn't let you use your computer unless you talk to him out of class for special permission, so you have to be ok with hand written notes. Very funny and awesome lectures, you can't miss them because he leaves out material from the powerpoint he posts online. Just make sure you review your notes and the readings carefully
Soc 003 with Rotondi is great. He is caring and hilarious. Really makes the subject interesting. This class is easy to pass. Do the readings and show up for the pop quizzes. The blanks on the powerpoint should be your study guide for the tests, if you do this you will pass tests. Rotondi for Soc 005 however is a whole other story and review...
Professor Rotondi is the worst Stats Professor that I have ever taken. The whole class hates attending lectures, he makes Stats so difficult to understand. Do not take him for Stats, You have been warned. He should get fired, if he continues to teach Stats, it is unfair to the student who take his class.
this is the second class i have taken with professor Rotondi. he is a great! he is clear in what he expects from the class. he does move a bit fast with this subject, but he is willing to help if you go to him for help.
Rotondi's an awesome professor, but he isn't the best stats professor out there. He goes through the material pretty fast, so you have to keep up. He can also get a bit frustrated when students ask him to go over something again in lecture. Highly suggest going to office hours for additional help. 4 quizzes, 2 assignments, 2 midterms and a final
I wouldn't say he's the greatest Stats professor, but he's not the worst either. You definitely have to get outside help in order to understand the material and READ the book! Both the reading that's assigned and the textbook. He's an amazing Sociology professor, but Stats is just not his thing. Don't knock him down because of this one class.
Yes, Rotondi is a great professor and yes, one shouldn't state he is the worst professor based on one class however, he should be banished from teaching stats. Yes, Banished, Forever. Man cannot teach this class. Convolutd lectures, beyond fast pace, Merciless. Run far away, and then hide. Many have failed. MERCILESS.
I'm definitely the kind of person to complain about professors. I was really hesitant to take his class because I heard mixed things about him. Everyone who says he's mean is wrong. Coolest professor ever & makes lectures fun. He interacts with his students & I overall enjoyed his class & learned a lot. Hope to get rotondi for my upper-div classes!
Great professor with amazing lectures.
He's a cool guy but cannot teach stats, not sure if this was his first time or not but it was a STRESSFUL experience. He messed up when demonstrating examples every other lecture, and we had to scribble out and restart the examples on our own and were left to rely on the TA's. Also if someone was lost even after he explained it, he got impatient.
The subject itself is boring. I would be on the verge of falling asleep. His pop quizzes are literally based on the readings. If you actually read, you'll pass his class. If you just go off lecture, you'll maybe pass with a c. He doesn't allow electronics in lecture. Hes cool though.
Dr. Rotondi is freaking awesome! I love his teaching skills, i definitely learned a lot. There is 2 midterms, one final, and one paper. Papers suck, but he picks a cool topic and gives information on how to create your paper. Don't be lazy, do the readings! There will be pop quizzes, so use your time wisely because the articles are lengthy.
This professor is awesome. I have taken 3 classes with him and I will be taking another with him next quarter. You definitely have to do your readings! If you read and show up to class you should be fine. Very friendly. I have yet to have a negative experience. Paper is lengthy but you get to write about something interesting to you. Great Choice !
Taking a class with Rotondi is always a treat because he's great at lecturing and hilarious! The tests can vary in toughness, but the notes are straightforward and the readings weren't too complicated. Hope to take him yet again in the future!
he is clear on what he expects from the class. if you do your readings you should be fine. his tests are not difficult, they are pretty straight forward
Took this class as an upper div. He gives us weekly quizzes. You have one midterm & a final. His exams are hard and he words the questions kinda difficult. Also one visual final paper you do. Not a bad class, just make sure to stay on top of things and understand the concepts.
dr. r is so much fun! his class was hard and you really need to work for that A. however, he made the class enjoyable and loved his lectures. 2 midterms(40ish mc and 3 essay questions each), 1 paper, final(70 mc questions). the final was a lot easier than the midterms and he had similar mc questions(reworded)
One of the best sociology teachers Ive ever had. Will be taking him in the future!
Loved the professor. Loved the subject. Did not perform too well on exams. The exams were tough even if you liked the topic, but if you study and talk to him in office hours you'll be okay. Gave an OVERALL (not individual) round to students grades
Dr. Rotondi is amazing! He's funny and super passionate about his job and sociology overall. He lectures from PowerPoint (print those!) Makes lectures super interesting and relatable! He no longer gives quizzes/pop quizzes. Doesn't assign a textbook!
First two tests weren't bad. The final was unnecessarily hard, he asks a handful of questions where he asks about examples he's given in lectures ONLY. He also sent out a sorry example of a study guide, not giving students any idea how he would question. After that, he sent an email out giving students hope he'd give a curve. Didn't do it.
Hes an alright lecturer. Didnt enjoy the test very much because he tries to trick you rather and the lecture slides makes me feel like I dont need to be there. I think overall he tries to be as helpful as possible but actually makes the class harder than it should be.
Rotondi is a good professor and engages the class well. He hates phones, don't get caught with one in class. Print out his slides and take them to class to fill in if you don't like to write a lot. There was a paper, two midterms, and a final. Lots of reading, but he provides them at least, no text needed.
Professor doesnt mind failing students. Class average was a c and he decided not to curve it or anything! This class is so difficult to get into. Also the final was cumulative and in the exam he tries to trick you a lot. Hes not a bad professor but hes also not a fair one. Also stay away from arrogant TA Levin. No help at all !!
An amazing lecturer that keeps the class interested and engaged. There is one paper, 3 tests and optional readings that you must keep up with if you want to pass. He is very interesting and reasonable with grading. First test was easy the next few get harder. My only issue is he brings politics into everything. Crazy Liberal!!
This guy final for sociology 004 was beyond hard. tested heavy on stuff we didnt go over in class, he would skip around chapters, told us he would curve and didnt, also he was behind in chapters so we was playing catch up, while at the same time his making the material harder then it is, nightmare class, the discussions where a nightmare too
Engaging lectures and super cool guy all around. Your only grades in this class are the paper and the 3 tests (non-cumulative), which means you need to do well on everything to get an A. That isn't too hard though, as showing up means you basically get the answers. Read the assigned texts and you're good, and even if you don't you'll pass still.
HEAVY FOCUS ON READINGS! The readings were interesting but exams were long and tedious questions based on 22+ readings done within the prior 4 weeks, so it was difficult to recall the info.
Extremely based on readings, if you don't read then you will absolutely fail the tests. The midterms are unnecessarily difficult. The first midterm was about 20 readings, class notes and lectures, and also the syllabus. His lectures are interesting but I would NOT recommend taking this class whatsoever, this is definitely not an intro level class.
Dreadful professor. I would never recommend anyone to take him. Said to the class that we should focus on lecture slides for Exam 1 but goes back on his word and does the majority of questions from readings. Extremely tricky questions in exams and apparently goes back on his word when he vows to curve the grade if a few students get A's and B's.
crazy how he expects us to recall information from 22+ readings and doesnt even hand back tests so we can review what we got wrong. for an intro class this class is tough, if you got other classes to prioritize do not take him.
This course, while fine, isn't what I expected from an intro course because it is very reading focused and the professor expects a level of comprehension beyond what I consider reasonable. The tests have no study guide but ask specific questions about the 20+ readings and he doesn't tell the TAs beforehand what will be on the test.
Dr. Rotondi's lectures were extremely interesting and he is passionate about sociology. However, for an intro class, the tests were unnecessarily difficult. The subject is overall easy to comprehend, but he made the tests extremely difficult. Furthermore, make sure to read. I find it difficult to understand 20+ readings just for a test.
Made SOC001 a little ridiculous with how much he demanded. Don't skip out on readings, majority of exam is based on it. Hates phones but lecture is interesting and he is funny, but also a little rude. Exams were tedious but final had repeat Qs. Listen to lecture, keep up with readings (take notes), attend discussion and you have high odds of an A.
I personally didnt like this class at all. He gives 80-100 pages of reading each week or more and doesnt go over them in class. So if you like reading this is the class for you, if not, take it with someone else. Other than that the class was fine.
I already felt skeptical about an upper-division professor teaching Intro Soc the first time. He is funny and explains the concept clear and in a fun way. YET, he focuses A LOT on readings (3 chapters every class). The readings weigh around 30 to 50 % on the test. The questions are so details and tricky. I read the whole chapter but still got X.
This class was by far the worst class I have taken so far. I never for one moment thought of this class as being fair towards students. The amount of reading assigned for this class is unacceptable. 70-100 pages a week. No reading can be skimmed. His tests ask very specific questions and he makes the class harder than what it should be. Avoid!!!!
Tests were way too specific, hates cellphones and will call you out, no laptops in class, too many reading it's ridiculous and trust me he will test you on specifics from every reading. Overall currently this professor is the worst I've had so far, he complicates his lectures too much by trying to sound intelligent.
Don't take him if u absolutely don't have to. Trust me on this one.
I would recommend taking Professor Rotondi. It was kind of hard to get used to having the lecture done remotely, but he will try to help you out. He tried to change it up by having nine weekly quizzes which some of the quizzes were hard, but they were actually double.
Easy going professor and approachable. Exams/quizzes are extremely specific and difficult.
If you do not like reading, this class is NOT for you. There are quizzes every single week. So, beware if you do not like to read this class is not for you. I thought I would be fine with just discussion and lectures but boy was I wrong. I failed my first quiz. Once I read the book I started doing well. The lectures and discussion were pointless.
I've had Rotondi for Soc 1 and Soc 3. His lectures are interesting and intriguing. However, in order to do well in his class, you need to put in the work. His tests/quizzes are detailed with material he goes over in class. In my opinion, he's not an easy A. Be sure you know everything he talked about, and do the readings!!!
do your readings and you will pass the class! very understanding and approachable professor. well respected by many students in the Soc department
This professor weighs short answer questions/quizzes as the most and rates participation and discussions the least. The professor uses the most recent text for soc 15, in which all test questions come from the text or his lectures. The tests are very hard and worded difficultly. He schedules all due dates for assignments before 6PM PST.
6 quizzes 65% of your grade that are worded oddly. He has a lot of confusing questions and the quiz is timed. You have a project that is 25% and a lot of work. The discussion section is 10% of your grade, you just have to show up. He posted lectures daily about 1hr long sometimes more or less. Lots of reading. He is nice, but I wouldn't take again
Matthew Rotondi is my favorite professor at UCR. I had different courses with him & he is always consistent! Due to the pandemic, he was extremely understanding & dropped our lowest quiz. He also provided detailed outlines to study for the quizzes/exams! He makes us laugh too; He played a clip from the Dave Chappelle show!! Just amazing <3
Prof. Rotondi is a good professor. His lectures can be very long and tiring, but he explains the material clearly. He assigns weekly quizzes that are VERY dependent on the reading he assigns, so get ready to read. I did not particularly appreciate that he changed deadlines every other week, and it can be confusing and frustrating.
His lectures are long but they're interesting! A LOT OF READING and his quizzes are insanely specific and questions can be a little confusing! This class took a lot of my time (mostly bc he gave at least 100 pgs of reading each week) so I wouldn't suggest taking this class if you have other classes to prioritize. Not an easy A so don't slack!!
GREAT Professor, but I would NEVER take this class again. The workload for his SOC001 online class is VERY heavy, and you must read SO many readings for a quiz each week. The quizzes are worded weirdly and difficult to understand. I've never had a class with this much assigned reading in my whole entire college career.
He's a great professor and explains the material very well BUT he will make you work for your grade. It's online and so your grade is heavily based on reading quizzes. There is SOOO much reading and the quizzes are very specific. It's not a bad class but don't expect this to be an easy breadth course if you're not ready to read.
You have to make sure to read because there are quizzes every week! pay attention to lectures as well! you really need the books and its a lot of reading
His lectures are interesting but can be very long. You need to do a lot of reading in addition to watching the lectures to do well on the weekly quizzes. Very time consuming so be sure to pace yourself. You get participation points just for showing up to discussion and there's a paper at the end of the quarter. No midterm or finals.
I honestly love Rotondi, usually. However, this class had a heavy course load, and we're in the middle of a pandemic. He made some accommodations for us, but it was still a lot. The textbook was terrible, as well, as it had nothing to do with the lectures, and felt irrelevant. The tests were mainly on the reading, which was tedious.
Professor Rotondi is clearly passionate about his work and believes that what he teaches is important. However, his lectures are only a small portion. He required two textbooks and you HAVE to read them. He gives a quiz just about every week, mostly about the 60-70 pages you had to read. Overall, hard but interesting material.
This class isn't hard. It's just ALOT. I would not recommend taking this class with another class that you know will take up a lot of time. Each week we were given a ton of readings (make sure you take good notes on these). At the end of every week, you will be quizzed on these readings as well as the lectures. It's not hard, it's just a lot.
Prof. Rotondi was amazing and cares very much about what he teaches. The workload is definitely a lot (two textbooks, quizzes every week), but he is SUPER generous and accommodating to student needs. Extremely understanding professor and a very good lecturer. Do the readings, take notes, and you'll pass with an A no problem.
GREAT professor, and he is so passionate. take this class if you want to LEARN something in college for once. he gives a lot of work, but he is so passionate about sociology and he will teach you whatever you're curious about. amazing teacher and honestly one of the most educated, knowledgeable, and sophisticated profs i've had.
This professor is an absolutely amazing person but omg his class is so hard. This is supposed to be a breadth class but the material is way too much. At a minimum of 40 pages of reading per class so it's a lot. The tests are also very lecture and readings-based, they ask specific questions that are hard to know if you don't study like crazy.
I would avoid his class. He changed the syllabus quite a few times. Also, reading is heavy and so are the quizzes. The quizzes are also unnecessarily difficult. He would say one thing and another. For example quizzes were commutative but sometimes they kinda were. *eye roll*.
Rotondi is by far the hardest educator I have ever experienced in my whole life. You could be on your death bed, and he still would not be compassionate to your problems. His quizzes are ridiculously hard. Even if you do all the lectures and readings thoroughly, it is impossible to get an A. It's as if he doesn't want to see his students succeed.
Rotondi is a great professor. he's not really an easy A, but you'll learn a lot from class. He has a really great way of drawing you in and making you interested in the lecture topics, you just have to put in the time. If you're interested in sociology, I would definitely recommend it. He gives extra credit too, depending on how the class is doing.
This professor is so un helpful and doesnt even care if you pass or not .And he is rude do not take him .I repeat do not
Seasoned professor. Knowledgeable. Can answer your questions. What youll learn will be applicable to the real world. However, his exams give you only 1 min 30 sec to answer in a class that is supposed to build critical thinking when you dont have the time to think critically. Great Proff if you love soc but youll be taking TONS of notes
Professor Rotondi is great! He has excellent lectures and listens to students. He blends theory and current, relevant topics of interest quite well. The class is challenging, but by attending lecture and studying reasonably, the course is manageable. I would definitely recommend!
Possibly one of the worst teachers I've had. Sucks he has so many classes in this department because now I will have to take him again. If possible, avoid his classes, if not, avoid TA Armond at all costs.
I find all sociology classes interesting, yet, this professor is very dry. He also says white supremacy makes him uncomfortable but "I'm benefiting from it" lol I can see why a lot of students dislike it. He also claims to be empathic, but he's not. Tie up your shoelaces! You'll learn a lot, but you need to put in the work.
Prof Rotondi was an exceptional professor! Each of his lectures was beyond interesting and was accommodating for those who did not attend live in-person lectures by posting the recordings online. He also provides you will all the readings except for the McDonaldization textbook. He is also very organized and his syllabus is straightforward.
Professor Rotondi is nice but expects a lot from his students in their work performance. His lectures get a bit difficult (from someone who hasn't taken sociology in years), and he assumes everyone gets the material. It was a laid-back class, but the material was bland and the professor became inaccessible after submitting our final exams.
Professor Rotondi is an engaging lecturer with a good sense of humor, and who communicates ideas clearly and fluidly. His lectures are structured to clarify and build upon the readings, so ensure you're caught up with the material before each class. Success means being able to apply concepts abstractly... memorization is not enough.
I'm very impressed by Prof Rotondi and his style of lecturing. I enjoy his humor and engagement with his class, I'm already looking forward to trying to take some of his other Soc classes in the future.
Professor Rotondi gives amazing lectures! Although there are up to 300 students in the lecture he is able to make it interactive and fun. He makes sociology pretty easy to understand.
Awful! Save your time and hair loss! If you have a job be prepared to do insanely amount of extra work and still not get passed.
I was initially excited about this course but I really didn't enjoy it. Rotondi grades on only 2 papers and 2 quizzes in this class, and doesn't make his expectations for them clear. There is also so much reading but all the notes in the world won't help on quizzes because he takes the most obscure details to put on the quiz. Do not recommend.
don't take this class if you value your gpa. we only get 2 essays and 2 tests (midterm and final) in the gradebook & the tests are about the readings. readings each week are fine as long as you take good notes but to get good grades on these tests you have to literally memorize those readings. it's impossible. final was 125 questions at night.
Don't take the class if you're trying to get an A or an easy credit. There will be a lot of reading if you want to do well on the exams, so if you don't like reading...run. The professor doesn't curve ANYTHING. Don't rely on or expect a curve even if everyone gets a horrible grade on an exam.
You can get mixed feelings about this class. I personally think the lectures were really interesting and the professor was funny. A tip I would give is DO the readings. As long as you read, and look back at lecture notes, you should be good! The essays aren't graded hard, people are dramatic. The exams are what I would say are probably the hardest.
(3) 15-20 page readings per week, weekly10 minutes for a five-q quiz class average - 60%. The c. average for midterm - 63 % and the professor had to give an exam retake (forced to keep the retake grade even if it's worse). After retake the class average after the exam retake on canvas - flat 72. First quiz he gave, fill-blank, c. average - 40%.
Do not take this professor. Do not take this professor. Do not take this professor. Do not take this professor... This is a lower division class that is muuuuuch more difficult than other higher division classes. Sooooo muuuch reading is required and he expects you to know every line that you read- based on how he makes his stupid quizzes.
From learning perspective, Dr. Rotondi makes sociology easy to understand. He has great humor and very strict expectations as well. If you have passion for sociology, he is the best. However, if you just want to pass the course, you will need to put hours of reading and get ready to memorize exact words from 20-30 pages of readings.
Perhaps one of the most difficult professors to take for sociology. There is a lot of reading and quizzes on those books. While he does upload the pages, they are almost 40 pages worth of reading with a quiz of 8 minutes and 5 questions to answer 40 pages. Who can even remember all those pages ? Don't recommend at all.
Overall this professor isn't the worst, but be prepared to read and write notes that won't matter. He gives "pop" quizzes weekly and asks the most absurd questions about the readings. He gives you little time for questions that don't even make sense. Also, don't even think ab bringing up your concerns, he'll passive-aggressively brush you off.
He is nice but his teaching method is awful. And this is an online course and it is impossible to read the pdfs he gives us each week. I thought the book we were given would be the book we would use for the course but I was wrong. The quizzes, exams, and papers were extremely difficult and about 10% of students actually understand him.
He's not a bad person. Just a bad professor. This was a lower division class and the difficulty was insane. I have never had a professor that was so passive to students. He would get so passive aggressive about certain questions and I could feel his annoyance through the screen. He asks so much of students and it was just all around a headache.
Difficult. Unclear with how to study for pop quizzes. Not funny. Lectures are boring just reads off of the power point and gives out half filled power points so you have to fill out along the way. Listened to his lectures on mute just copied the power point slides because he never covered necessary information for the pop quizzes anyway.
His lectures were interesting but the exams had nothing to do with them. Weekly pop-quizzes based in assigned 20-40 page readings, 5 questions, & 8 minutes to answer them... based on 40 pages readings. Even when he explained what was going to be on the final, the class average was a low C. He doesn't understand that he's is the problem!!
I hope to never take Rotondi again. He is highly passive aggressive. His pop quizzes were unreasonable with very specific questions and 6-8 minute timer. Prepare to write a 10-13 pg essay for 4 prompts. His lectures were interesting but they didn't always relate to exams with the specificity of his questions. Homework consists of 20-40 pgs a week.
I've had him more than 3 times & each time was so stressful. If you want a good grade, READ & GOOD NOTES!!! Don't procrastinate bc its heavy reading. Too little time for VERY specific Q's on quizzes + midterms. Please make good use of office hours if you want a good grade on your paper.
It sucks that he is one of the main SOC teachers at UCR bc he costs a lot of students from passing their classes. Reads off some slides & thinks he is teaching. Every quarter, class average is low. But he doesn't care about his students, just wants a paycheck. I would never recommend him unless you NEED it to graduate. Save yourself the anxiety.
Genuinely one of the worst Prof's I have ever experienced. Please avoid at all costs.
Be prepared to self learn as he requires you to read loads from selected textbook(s). I had 5 thesis papers throughout the quarter, and the papers all require you to quote from readings that he assigns. Make sure to leave enough time to write said papers as you will most likely not finish if you start the day before. Reads off slides on lectures.
amazing as a person, super friendly and very willing to help. that being said his class is so much harder than it has to be. gives slides ahead of time with 20% missing. you actually have to show up to lecture to get the material. reading intensive expect 30-100 pages a week. only graded on final and midterm but each has around 5 SA and MC portion
This prof was very strict. Most of the quarter, he insisted we have to come to the lecture to get the (necessary) notes, then switched to streaming online in the last 2 weeks. 5 papers based on the reading. No curve but the midterm and final are online+open-note. Would not recommend it if you're looking for an easy breadth class.
Professor Rotundis class is not very homework intensive but his ego needs to be checked. He asks people for participation and to answer questions but interrupts you mid response and will tell you no if your answer is not what he wanted to hear. His tone and responses to students are degrading and rude
The class was easy and lectures were easy to follow as well! I feel like I really understood the material. My only complaint is that canvas grade showed a different grade than on our transcript.. I had hope I passed with an A (via Canvas) but then saw on my transcript that I actually got a B+. Other than that, pretty easy class :)
Interesting subject and lectures but a LOT of readings! Weekly essays but only 2 pages. Only midterm and final so must do well. No test or class curve. Unless requirement, would only recommend taking if you're willing to put the work in.
Rotondi is TOUGH, but he is an amazing professor that is truly passionate about the material. He is very animated during his lectures and keeps people engaged. There isn't any homework BUT there are TONS of readings. Quizzes/exams have extensive reading questions incorporated. I spent about 4-6 hours/week on his readings.
Honestly, his class isn't bad. Tests are online and follow everything he went over in lecture. AS lon as you read what's required you should be fine. He makes you do about 5 papers, but theyre only 1 page. Those do make or break your grade though, so be aware. No extra credit, but Rotondi is pretty nice
I have taken Rotondi multiple times. He does have a bit of an ego, his lectures are better in person than online, but his readings are HORRIBLE. All of his readings are so lengthy and so hard to comprehend. His exams are also super tough
The main issue I find is that you cannot escape him in the Sociology department art UCR. Every course you sign up for he is at least one of the two available professors if not the only one. I have taken several upper division classes from him, but the most difficult one for no reason is 002, one of the lowest division courses
Dr. Rotondi is very condescending to students during classes. Assigns dense, difficult readings and tests on incredibly specific aspects of the readings. He recommends going to office hours to go over course material but doesn't exactly promote a welcoming atmosphere. If you absolutely HAVE to take his class, rely on your TA's as much as possible.
Uhm, I had to retake lol with another professor: so many reading and mandatory classes. I would say, he was an exciting lecturer and but the class is heavily based on Midterm and Final therefore the class is weighted heavily, heavy reading. I would not recommend it unless you have to take it since it is difficult for a General Education class.
Don't really need to read textbook so only three other separate readings. Was out a lot this quarter due to personal reasons so had to upload lecture recordings but recordings were often late. Lots of extra credit and moved final online to help. Difficult grader and subject matter but easy to reach. Will help you if you put in the effort!
he is very good at making lectures appealing and easy to attend. if you go to lecture, the class is not difficult. attendance is mandatory for discussion section. there are a few papers based on the readings and the content of lectures.
I took SOC 003 with him 3 times. Finally barely passed with a C- on my third attempt. His lectures were long and the assigned readings were dense. It was hard because the only thing in the gradebook were participation, midterm, final and some extra credit. There is practically no room to mess up or else your grade will suffer.
midterm and final are 86% of final grade. says notes for extra credit but wants them done very specifically in a format nobody has time for. have to buy textbook bc exams will say "from chapter..." exams nothing like lectures. condescending and seemingly sexist. cuts off women when they have a question thinking he knows what they were gonna say.
Not only was he a harsh grader, but the lectures had borderline nothing to do with the actual content. He expected us to read an entire textbook and a reading every week from the lecture along side another from the discussion course all in one quarter. Midterm essay was horrendous and confusing. Never take a class from this professor.
Taking this class made me question whether I like soc or reconsider my major. His lectures were not useful. I had difficulty retaining anything he taught in class. His tests are worth around 80 percent of the grade YOU HAVE TO DO WELL, there is no room for error. He has extra credit but grades them so harshly that he might not offer them.
Rotondi pretends to be friendly concerned about his students, but I prefer to say that he only cares about completing the course and his lecture performances. All of the grades I achieved were based entirely on self-study, self-study, self-study. I can't believe that such a professor was assigned to teach such an IMPORTANT sociology bridge course!!
His lectures are good and the content overall isn't difficult to understand, yet his tests are always difficult to take and prepare for. He offers extra credit each week that can add up to 10 points, which is nice but takes a long time.
He is one of the worst professors I've ever had, he was on an ego trip the entire quarter. He kept bringing up his thesis from college even though he is middle-aged. Started a game in class on how many times he would bring it up. Made me want to quit college because of the sheer audacity he had in blaming his students when he didn't teach us. 0/10
His lectures were good but if you didn't read the book you were cooked for the quizzes. However, even with studying, his tests were crazy and will always challenge you. If you can avoid his class, do it.
WORST PROFESSOR! told students that he wished he could throw students out of class for taking photos of slides. Lots of supplemental slides that DONT GET POSTED. He posted slides DAYS late. lectures are useless, read the textbook. The exams do not test your understanding of class, the answers are so similar they test "which wording did the book use"
Bros alright. His work isn't too bad. But there's lots of reading. One thing I will say is that he gets upset if you take a picture of his slides. Like so upset to the point where he almost kicked a student out. He'll say that the slides are already posted on canvas. I'd say he should let students take pics cause what if it helps them memorize it.
The lectures are pretty useless, it's better to read the book and even then the midterm questions challenge you more by wording it differently. There are A LOT of separate readings from the time-consuming book. For EC it almost feels like he doesn't want anyone to get any. He also yaps about unrelated things during class. Avoid it if you can.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Give yourself some self-respect by not taking his class. His midterms are based on the readings so if you HAVE to take his class, I'd recommend you read the chapters multiple times. In one lecture he said that "necrophilia is cool" and he doesn't know how to teach. He yaps for so long and his slides are nothing like the midterms.
It's always been about love and hate, now let me say I'm the biggest hater I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk I hate the way that you dress I hate the way you sneak quiz, if I catch flight, it's gon' be direct
Two midterms and 30% cumulative final. If you mess up on any of the tests it can drop your grade A LOT. His lectures are yap sessions and he does nothing to help you. 10 questions in 5 mins EC assignment. He gets angry/short a lot in lecture. Will take points away from you for no reason. He made me hate my major. Don't ever take a class from him!!!
I've taken Rotondi 2 times and he's one of the hardest/worst sociology professors, especially for this course. His lectures didn't help and same with the TA as they both would constantly yap about things that have nothing to do with the course. The quizzes and exams are unnecessarily hard. The extra credit is the only good thing about the class.
His lectures are hard to listen to and unclear. He rambles about his own life and beliefs, which are unrelated to the subject matter. TA helped a lot but lecture is not fun.
His exams are hard, but he knows his material very well. Make sure to read the book and focus on the details. I ditched a lot of his classes and did well because I read the materials. It helps to attend his lectures though.
Lectures can be hit-or-miss, but the textbook is essential. Exams focus on tricky wording, so read carefully. unstuckstudy was a game-changer for studying and test prep.
Don't take a class with Rotondi if you don't do work
The context is hard and the mainly point is from the exams. The attendance just 10 points. Hard to pass and the class average is 75%
I don't know how he became a professor. His teaching criteria is very unorganized. The exams counts a lot that if you do other assignments for this class, still it will be result as an F. Also, the discussion class wasn't helpful since TA was obtaining similar behavior like the professor. Overall, bad experience. Never take it!
AVOID THIS CLASS! He doesn't care about students' efforts in assignments. He mainly gives the final grade based on the performance of a student's midterm and final exams.
He doesn't know how to teach.
This class requires a lot of reading (3-6 readings per week; readings are long, and many are textbook style) alongside a group project and a paper. Not an easy class to take for credit. His lectures are detailed and helpful, but make up only a quarter of the midterms, and he rarely finishes his slides each week.
Listen to these peoples comments!
Ya'll in the comments are so dramatic; this class was so easy. Read the assigned readings & the textbook, which is pretty self-explanatory in its content, you will be fine. The exam ?'s are so basic if you READ & know the vocab. Tbh, he does yap in his lectures, but you can literally just not go. If you get below an A in this class, blame yourself.
Seen a lot of bad reviews for this professor but I don't see why. Lectures are a little boring but he's funny sometimes. You can pass without going to lectures just read the readings for the week because that's what his exams are heavily based on. 4 exams, 1 group project, 1 independent project. I wouldn't call them projects though, they're easy
A lot of people are saying “These comments are so dramatic, this class was so easy.” That's because all these comments are based on SOC001—the most basic sociology class you can take. Outside of the beginner class, this prof. Is a nightmare. Be prepared to memorize A LOT info from texts & lectures with almost no time to study, like a week at most.
Terrible. Takes an intro class way too serious and the tests can be extremely specific to the readings
If you don't do the readings, you're absolutely cooked. If you do the readings, there's a good chance you're still cooked. The test questions you about minor things from the readings you may not think to remember. Going to lecture is basically useless, he is a professional yapper. Does not curve. Take this class with a CC if you don't like reading.
Avoid at all costs for a breadth course. Probably one of the biggest wastes of time.Exams are so reading heavy you need to know every detail of the 10 readings per exam. Does the same 4 gestures all class to make his words have some meaning. Discussions are pretty much useless even the TAs say he is unnecessarily difficult.
way too much work for an INTRO class: 4 exams, a paper, and a group project, students are expected to read 150 pages a week and memorize intricate details for exams. no clear study guide for exams just straight up memorization on every single reading,, He doesn't curve grades either. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
HUGE waste of time. even if you read everything, high chance you're STILL cooked. Awful experience would never ever recommend this course to anyone.
Nice professor but makes us do a lot of reading material for this course. Lectures aren't so bad, attendance is recommended + must study lecture slides. One group project. Even if you study a good amount of the materials, you'd get a B. Be aware he'll ask specific questions from readings/lectures on exams
This class was nothing but an awful experience. Went to all the lectures, studied for the tests, and I bombed all three midterms, and failed the final. His questions are too specific, he'll put in questions that aren't in the tests, the TAs discussion sections did little to nothing to help, and no answer key for the tests. Needs to be fired.
Unnecessarily hard for an Intro class. I'd procrastinate on readings and rarely go to lecture. I expected a B but was lucky that he curved it. You'd need to time manage if you actually want good results. Each test is weighted more than the last. He expects you to “interact” with the text but realistically it's like a reading comprehension test.
Some people are saying the soc001 reviews are dramatic, but I can attest that they are not. The science classes I've taken have been easier! I should've read the reviews before taking him, he makes an intro class unnecessarily difficult. If you bomb even one of his exams, you won't get an A in the class. Avoid him at all costs if you can.
Funny guy and engaging lectures. I understand the critiques but the class isn't that bad if you're honest with yourself: read everything, take notes on readings and lectures, study before your quizzes. Do that I Promise you will get a good grade. He doesn't curve quizzes but he boosts your final grade which brought me from around a high B to an A.
Don't take this class especially if it is for a breath requirement because the tests are reading heavy and he expects you to remember every detail from them. My class did so bad that he had to give us a curve.
For an introductory course, this class was unnecessarily difficult. The exams are ask very specific questions from the textbook (which, if you don't read, good luck) and your grade is based on very little things. Taking this class as a breath course was the worst decision I've made.
When I thought this class was going to be easy IT'S NOT SO BEWARE! I've studied and attended all of his lectures and discussions to have a good grade on 3 exams and 1 final but as I look at my grades combined to see and add how many exams or anything graded I thought I was passing with a C+ but I received a bad grade. So again beware and watch out.
This professor literally gave me a panic attack and I had to go to urgent care. He makes us turn in our notes every week and he grades them based off of how he wants our notes to look like. This doesn't make sense to me because notes are used for us to study, not for him to grade. We can't take any pictures of his slides, but he goes so fast.
He loves talking about nothing and then complains when we have 30 minutes left in a class that we don't have enough time for the lectures. He wants personalized lecture notes with chapter reading notes, checking them on a scale of complete and incomplete, but he wants to do it his way, when the notes are supposed to be used for our quizzes
personalized lecture notes and chapter readings, but he wants to have it done his way, marked on the scale of complete or incomplete, but doesn't provide feedback about the notes on what you did right or wrong because he doesn't grade it right away. Also he complains about everyone writing everything from the notes but he doesn't shorten the notes.
I avoided Professor Rotondi for my whole undergrad. I needed one of his classes to graduate, so i took it my last term. I REGRET letting these posts deter me from taking his classes. If you enjoy Sociology I advise against steering clear of this professor. I have had a tougher time in classes with professors who have had AMAZING ratings.
avoided taking this professor for 3 years bc of many bad reviews, but i believe he's adjusted to feedback and improved tremendously. he is passionate about the material and a great lecturer. notes and quiz due every week, final is a project, and many extra credit opportunities. he is a fair grader and curved our final grades. i would recommend!
This teacher makes you take a ton of notes and is a note dictator. He wants YOUR notes to be a certain way, when your notes should be curated to your style of note taking. HE says he is flexible but he isn't, this kind of self narcissism that his way is the only way of doing this is correct makes him an unfit teacher.
pick another class
If you can avoid this prof please do. His classes have such a lack of organization and he is just as bad when it comes to providing feedback and grading results for students. There was so much reading to do on a weekly basis and exams were awful. He changed the structure of exams and homework assignments throughout the course which dropped grades.
save yourself. he grades lecture and reading notes. surprise attendance. tests are very heavy readings.
This professor just goes based on the effort you put in. If you're looking for an easy pass you won't get it by not putting in the work. It's mainly the readings that will get you through because he tests heavy on them. If you don't understand, go to office hours. Don't avoid him bcuz of ratings, he's understanding and does help if u ask.
i genuinely hoped i would get hit by a car before every class so i wouldn't have to attend.
Class was very difficult. Exams were extremely hard, and the guides were somewhat vague and put together last minute. Exam content was quite difficult too.
