This guy is amazing! He is a wonderful professor, and he's quite funny too. He deff. makes a hellacious 8 am lecture worthwhile! I will miss him
Cool guy, easy class, no required homework is a plus CRAZY SUPER COOL COURSE WEBSITE!!!
He makes the class really interesting, even for an 8:20 lecture
This guy is great - it's an easy class and he makes the class real fun. I took BIO 103 just cuz he taught it. Really, he's the best!
Excellent teacher! Probably one of the easiest one's you'll ever have
easy as hell but he dropped putting the power point slides online, so you have to go to class. oh well.
Hes awesome! It is an easy class and he makes the lectures fun. His tests are straight from his lectures so u dont even have to bother reading the book. Plus he posts his notes on Blackboard.
Nice guy, and funny when his thoughts randomly drift to beer.
Easy as hell. He has the slides online so I never went to class and I still got an A
Great teacher. MEMMORIZE the notes and you got an "A". Go to lecture, he gives questions on tests and highlights "important" things. LOTS of Extra Credit available for final grade (10 pts)! Even gave 1 E.C. pt onto final grade to every

mad nice guy
There is no point in going to his classes...he usually just posts the notes online...HOWEVER, do study, you'll need it for the mass amounts of multiple choice questions. He's really nice...
Funny guy... and very nice! Go to class- usually extra points when you show up in bad weather!
this guy is the funniest and nicest. He makes learning biology interesting, his tests were straight from the notes. and he points out important points which will be questions. or he will actually give you the question.
really nice guy, but this course is a joke... if you've got AP credit, you can place out of this class but it's useless in that this class is such an easy A compared to whatever AP bio class you take in high school
He is a great teacher. Really nice guy and helpful. His tests are stricly on the notes so dont waste your money on the text book.
Truly one of a handful of professors at SB that can be considered a Teacher - and a damned good one at that. Very concerned, very clear and very organized.
Wonderful professor, make friends with him.
Class is so easy. If you took AP biology in high school you won't have to go and you'll still get an A because the cd-rom you have to get has lecture videos and practice tests on it. Very nice guy.
The slides are online and he puts ALMOST EVERYTHING he discusses in class on the slides. There is not much of a point going to class because he reads right off the slides and besides the class is boring especially if you have ever taken a bio class in HS
Awesome guy. Wonderful teacher. They should give this man more money
Easiest class... EVER.
great teacher to take for BIO150. He has wonderful notes and his test are not too hard. You don't necessarily have to go to lecture because all the the notes are on blackboard. but it definitely helps. i enoyed his class. he trys to make lectures not soo damn boring.
very easy class, very nice guy, easy midterms, but the final was a ball buster
He's one of the nicest guys ever! All of his notes are up on his website, so you don't even need to do anything. His tests are really easy. Take this class if you need to fulfill a DEC. It's an easy A and you'll enjoy it.
schmidt is one of the best of the best when it comes to the professors at stony brook.
Best teacher ive had in college as of yet. Hes pretty entertaining, extremely clear and helpful when needed.
One of the best teachers at stony. Hes up for a teaching award and for good reason. All around amazing teacher and person.
Ive taken classes with him before. excellent lecturer, compassionate to students, and knowlegeable of subject. Also quite easy. This semester he used some garbage Edu pack CD and sold out to make some money, even though he says he doesnt. Still worth taking if u dont mind being ripped off a lil
The Best Prof I've ever taken in entire college career. He's amazing and makes everything so easy to understand. Theres no way you can fail his class, hes too good of a prof
delay giving back exams...lots of materials to memorize for one exam...but if u're good in memorizing all lecture notes....u'll do fine on exams
Wow! What a great guy, tries to make the subject interesting- and he succeeds!
A really terrific professor who's eager to help, and engages with the students quite a lot. Great person to boot!
Easy! tests are directly from notes
Schmidt is da ill bomb diggity man for Bio. The only teacher who actually gives tests based on his notes, which are easy and understandable. Lab was gay, but manageable. I studied maybe an hour at most for his tests and I had a B+ for the course, with a balls lab grade.
Easy class. Take it for your DEC E. The test questions comes straight from the lecture notes, you don't even need to go to class. I did better after I stopped going to class. He is a nice guy too, kinda funny..and very helpful.

excellent
Take this class for one of your DEC E requirements. Trust me. He's a great guy and a great professor. All notes are posted on BLACKBOARD and attendance isn't necessary. Extra credit opportunities as well. Lowest midterm grade gets dropped too.
He is an excellent professor. His notes and lectures are clear. All lectures are posted on Blackboard. Overall he's an excellent professor and that is saying alot for a SB science course... if he taught more biology courses I'd take them with him. And attendence to class is not necessary.
I love this man. as a freshman, i can honestly say this is the easiest and best teacher i have in my college career. test are easy, don't need to come to class, and he even makes some jokes. but too bad his jokes suck lol.
Easiest teacher ever! All slides are online, gives bio 101 10extra credit points for diff things on to ur final gpa!! 4exams, 1 dropped, and very helpful TAs. TAKE THIS CLASS FOR A DEC E!!
This is the easiest class you can take at Stony Brook. If you get below an A I feel bad for your parents. All tests are based on blackboard lecture notes. You don't have to go to class. Offers up to 10 extra credit points. Great DEC class.
the man likes what he does.
I LOVE Him. If I had any doubts about being a Bio major, he helped clear them up with his class. He really knows what he's talking about, and he likes what he does, and it shows. A great class, either for a DEC or as an Intro to Bio.
This class was so easy. The material covered is so general.
One of the most engaging, intelligent, and helpful professors I have encountered at stony brook during my four years. Very approachable and conveys material at a good pace. He absolutely deserved the award that he received last year. One of the best professors who I have had the pleasure to learn from!
If you don't pass this class with a B and above...drop out..ur useless ...he is a great professor
This was the best class I have taken at stony. He knows what he is doing, is always prepared and gives tons of extra credit. You literally never have to go to class and you could get an A. His lectures were interesting also. A real nice guy. Makes bio bearable. definitely take a class with this man!!! :)
Love him! Great guy! He honestly cares about his students and about the coursework. The class itself involves a great deal of memorizing and when I took it, the edu-pack, although required, was of no use, except for the course pack that came with it (Schmidt even agreed). If you are interested in disease etiology/epidemiology, take this!!
Very easy class material and a great professor. If you have any questions (which i dont see why you would) his office hours are allways empty. Overall extremely easy tests.
By far one of the best professors at Stony Brook! Makes class worthwhile, and is passionate about many aspects of biology. Engaging personality, down to earth, and very intelligent!
This man makes you want to become a science major!!!!!!! And I dont do science...Take him, hes so awesome and his lectures are on DVD....You can watch him over & over again...Exams are easy & he uses questions that are on the DVD review.....By far THE BEST professor Ive had a Stony!!!!!!! You wont be sorry if you take him...And he gives xtra credit
I would recommend you to take his class. He makes everything seem easy. His tests are easy if you come to the lecture and study off of the lecture notes. All the answers are in those two places. Sometimes he mentions things in the lecture that's not in the notes. Make sure you come to lecture. The lectures are fun because he a pretty funny guy.
Great professor. Speaks clearly, and makes the class about as fun as a bio class can be. He gets my recomendation for sure. Very happy I took his class.
good for that early in the morning.
Extremely good professor...easy course, makes everything clear and easy to understand.
THIS GUY IS GREAT, PERIOD! YOU HAVE TO LOVE A GUY WHO TAKES THE TIME TO EXPLAIN DIFFICULT CONCEPTS TO A CLASS OF 2OO PLUS. WHAT A GREAT MAN! LOVE HIM.
good lecture notes, fun class, he was really helpful but the class was kind of early in the morning
very good professor. He's even more interesting in his office hours than in class. He's very opinionative on his belief that evolution is more plausible than creationism, which I happen to agree with. A+ teacher, highly recommended
Schmidt is the man. Three scantron exams. Just go to lecture and study the notes or pay attention in class. The class lecture average was like a B+, so an A is definitely possible. Not to forget, he's mad entertaining and extremely helpful at office hours.
very good teacher, take advantage of extra credit!
Very funny teacher! Makes you really enjoy the class. Go to lecture; it'll help you so much on the exam. I made the mistake of not attending enough and I think that's main the reason I didn't get an A in this class (not that he takes attendance). The textbook is basically all the slides he goes through in lecture, but he adds extra stuff to know.
Great guy very good professor!
Absolutely the best. Funny, intelligent, and caring.
Easy A. Nice professor and funny, too. You can tell he's really interested in what he does and the class itself is very engaging.
nice guy! make stuff interesting
This is an extremely easy class the lab is the only thing that might bring u down but now they took away the lab so ur goood to go...just study the slides...
GREAT PROFESSOR, VERY INTERESTING AND FUNNY, EASY CLASS, AND HAS A DVD OF HIS LECTURES THAT COME ALONG WITH THE BOOK. PROVIDES EXTRA CREDIT, AND IF YOU GO TO CLASS YOU WILL DEFINITELY GET AN A+. NOTE:IF YOU'RE NOT AT ALL GOOD WITH BIO, YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD GO TO CLASS BECAUSE HE PROVIDES A LOT OF INFO THAT ISN'T ON HIS POWER POINT LECTURE SLIDES.
Very personable and makes the material clear, interesting, engaging and relatable to everyday life. He's a good man.
excellent pro......funny...u will enjoy it
He is a great pro.....exams are easy..u just need to memorize those lecture notes that he post on blackboard.... and he is funny, and you will just love him.... take him..no doubt...
this class has to much work to do, the TA r terrible
Nice guy, gave a possable 12 pts added on to your final grade for extra credet... the text book is already outlined. His test questions are strait foward.... to fufill a DEC its a good class.
Take this class, so easy, 3 tests but he drops the lowest one and a final, also giving us so much extra credit, material is easy too
AWESOME!!!!! Best science class at SB. He is so helpful, just make sure you studythe powerpoint notes, and do the xtra credit, its there for you. I love schmidt! He needs to stop being so hard on HIMSELF though! :)
To do well you should go to class and on top of that MEMORIZE those lecture notes becuase he will hit you with some pretty funky stuff and those midterms. IF you do all the extra credit you should be all rite.
He gives grade very fairly, and he also gives out extra credit alot.Enjoy his class! He's a nice person!!
Easy class. Just follow the notes that you can print online and just use the edu pack cd. That's all you really need, Just practice everything on the cd and you will do great. he even repeats the questions from the quiz center on the tests. plus he drops the lowest grade.
He is a great professor! I would go to the lectures if you can because he tells you what to study and what not to. There are 3 midterms and 1 final. He offers a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester so take advantage. I didn't buy the textbook and it was fine because you just need to memorize his lecture notes.
Best class ever. if you don't take it you're tardo.
amazing... all the notes are online so you don't have to go to classs, but I always did because I had so much fun. Hands down the nicest most helpful professor ever. not to mention a ton of extra credit points that you have to be retarded to pass up.
nice guy. he was fun. we watched a movie for extra credit. brought his really cute daughter to class. thumbs up!
A very good professor who makes his classes very enjoyable. The coursework was fairly easy and he made everything very clear.
By far the best, he's adorable!
he is an awesome professor...doesn't make anything too hard and explains things very well.
really really nice prof..good lec notes..teaches the material very well..tests aren't very hard as long as u kno what's going on, he's calm and patient..helpful..easy bio class b/c of him
Awesome teacher, easy class.
Class is easy to understand, the textbook is optional but can come in handy on the homeworks (which are ALL online...and sometimes a lot). OTherwise, his lectures are all online and multiple choice tests. Highly recommended because this teacher keeps you interested!
He is a veeeeeery nice professor, and the class was so easy that you have plenty of extra credits opportunites to rise your grade to an A. Attendance is not mandatory, but I just didn't want to miss any classes, cuz he talked about funny things every time.
Real nice guy, can't argue with that. Makes lectures amusing. The way the class is structured is ridiculous, though; too much of a nuisance with online components. Two midterms were simple, final was very difficult. Still managed to pull off an A; just be prepared to do a lot of online work and keep track of deadlines. Nice guy though, reccomended.
Funny, makes the subject fun, extremely clear but the test questions can be sneaky at times.
best professor ever! just go to class and listen to his explanations n you will do well on the exams. be sure to go to his office hours for help. this course has alot of online work (hw, discussion, activity preps). two fair exams, but a hard final. if you keep up with deadlines and study lecture notes thoroughly, you can definitely get an A.
Great professor. Worse part of the course was the taxonomy of bateria and such but other than that easy and interesting class. go to his office hours
great professor! he's dorky-funny and he knows/loves his stuff.. you don't really have to go to lectures because u can watch them on CD. u pretty much just need to memorize slides & go to the weekly TA quizzes for extra credit.
Awesome professor, also good looking! He is truly interested in what he does, and he's very caring and helpful to students.
He's sooo wonderful...too bad they ruin the class with all the high school assignments that bring your grade down because they nit-pik every detail. The TA's who run the activity part of the class really ruin it. Too much work for a 100 level course! and there's a paper too!!
Hated this subject, but teacher good and fair grader. Posts videos of his lectures online, so you don’t have to come to class. Try to borrow the text from someone who took the class already, cuz it’s expensive at the book store, and you can’t sell it back after the class is over for some strange reason.
good guy, watch movies, lecture notes are most of the test requirements
easy guy, lenien, lowest grade out of 4 is dropped, jus pay attention to the class notes
Nice guy. Class is fairly easy and he puts up lectures, which helps. Read the text before the tests (aka cramming is acceptable) and you should be fine. Offers extracredit assignments. TA Ze was very lenient and nice.
this dude is cool. i mean it's a huge class buthe still manages to keep it interesting. he has a good heart and i know he puts the efforts to help in class. you should definitely take him. he gives reviews on test that almost come the same in the exam. he's cool
the test is hard and it require alot of thinking!!!!!! the class is interesting...
Great Prof. Only Studied Lecture Notes, textbook was waste. Great Lecturer. Easy A
One of the greatest Professors/Person you will meet. His Lecture notes are straight forward and easy to understand. He gives 4 Tests and the lowest grade can be dropped except the final which is mandatory and will not be dropped. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunity's. This semester there was a total of 11 extra credit points that you could
easiest bio class ive taken just b/c schmidt was teaching it, got an A easily b/c of the 7 extra credit points he offered.. take advantage of that and just memorize notes
An easy class. Just memorize lecture notes and you will get an A. Don't need to attend class.
Heres the deal: 3 tests, lowest dropped. Plus final. I got a 72.5 and a 72.5 on both tests and a 68 on the final. I did ALL the extra credit work, which was 11 points added to the final average and I ended up with a B+ for the class. Very cool teacher. You have to be a complete imbecile to get anything below a B.
Excellent teacher. Very impressed with lectures and an easy A.
He's an easy teacher, but if you want to take BIO 150 as a DEC class, please reconsider. There are way too many components in this class, including eDiscs, ePrep, and a term paper..
he is such a good professor. he's funny and truly cares about how his students do. just go to lectures and listen and you'll get an easy a or b. he's really easy to listen to in lectures because he explains everything on a level everyone can understand.
One of the nicest and smartest people I have had the pleasure of knowing!
Professor is amazing. I have never had any interest in BIO, or any other science class in fact, but he made BIO easy and actually interesting at most times. Want an A? Just memorize all of the lecture notes like I did. Plus, there are tons of extra credit opportunities. If you do them all, you can get at least 11 extra points on your final grade.
Class is easy. Shows genuine concern for students. Very interesting lectures and his lectures are always packed with people actually wanting to be there.
A true inspiration
I do not think his class is so easy. BIO 150 is not so useless. He kind of help you to catch the flow of biology teachers in SB.
love love love this prefessor! i took bio 150 and 315 with him and he makes it easy. for some people like myself, 315 isnt easy, but he is amazing and makes you want to come to class. Always willing to help
really really good professor. upset bc diff prof taught our class for the last few weeks...wish he would have taught the whole semester. bio 150 isnt as easy at it may seem. but prof schmidt is so nice and really wants his students to understand the material, he makes everything clear. definitely take his classes!
Fair greater, decent amount of work but its not hard, a couple of HWs and 2 short essays, class is intresting and tests are easy, big curve at the end
315 was not an easy class, but Schmidt is awesome and makes it worth it. No real text book just power points, know them and you are pretty much set. Besides he offers a lot of extra credit.
He was awesome. Clear lectures, tried to make concepts stick by going over them repeatedly, overall nice guy.
I can't say enough wonderful things about Professor Schmidt! I am not a science person at all but his class wound up being my favorite! He is fair and always looking for ways for you to improve your grade! His class is fun and interesting! I never wanted to miss a class! His test are easy if you make the effort. I highly recommend BIO 101!
Matthew Schmidt has to be one of the best professors I have ever had. I am not a fan of biology but he managed to spark my interest in the subject. I ended up with a 100 average!
Going to class is useless and waste of your time. Study the old tests, that's all that's on there. I had, and still have, no interest in Bio, just had to take it. I'd try another Bio 101 prof is there is one.
Fantastic professor! I detest bio but he is so great that I didn't even care. I wouldn't recommend the class just because of the 10 pg. paper but any class with Schmidt is a guaranteed good time either way.
He isn't my favorite professor. I didn't buy the text book, it isn't mandatory. Just study the slides and if someone is nice enough to send you a copy of old exams you'll be fine.
I would recommend this class, and him as a professor to anyone! He is extremly enthusiatstic and caring, the only part I dislike about this is class is his counter part Mark who co- teaches the class. He is a wondrful teacher and if you study the slides, you are golden!
He is too nice for his own good! How can you not love this guy? He goes out of his way for you even though he really doesn't have to. He is always willing to explain things to you and is very approachable. THE MAN.
Great lecturer. Clear and thorough when speaking. EXTREMELY lenient and generous. You can accumulate up to 11 points total extra credit on your final grade. Material is rather simple and straightforward. You really can't get below an A- for this class.
An extremely easy and lenient professor. All you really need to do is study off the textbook and slides. Schmidt also allows you to accumulate many extra grades through the course of the semester that will go toward your final grade so that you WILL recieve that A that he wants you to get. Highly enjoyable and recommended class.
I do not suggest anyone who is not a senior to take microbiology. BIO 315 is extremely difficult and you really need to apply yourself to do well. Basically if you have a 65 test average you'll likely get a C as most of the class does. The 5 points extra credits he offers makes no difference unless you are in B to A- range. I tried hard got a C.
It is an easy A course if you are a good memorizer. Every week has a quiz to take to get extra credit. But you have to take at least 10 to get 5 pts add to you average. Old texts do great help. Suggest to get them if you can b/c almost 40% of test come from previous exams.
He's lects r super interesting. Go to extra credits.. that would help a lot.
Dr. Schmidt is the man! I didn't really study on any of the exams and I still did above average. As long as you go to class and pay attention, you'll do fine. Do those extra credit opportunities! You might need them. It could raise you a whole letter grade. On tests, pay attention to the questions, you might get some wrong due to your mistakes.
THE BEST professor at Stony Brook. 315 does require some memorization - start early before exams. =)
EASY DEC E!
At first this class may seem easy, but the material gets hard. There is a lot of memorization and it is not that easy of an A. BIO 315 has a lot of details and the final is cumulative. There is extra credit, and I suggest you take it. Lecture can put you to sleep as the material is not that interesting. 2 midterms, 1 final makes up your grade.
He is awesome. Its an easy DEC E. I have never read the textbook, but I get an A. What you need to go is to memorize the PPTs and do the old exam before each mid-term. There are 11 extra credits in total. You'd better take quizzes each week for 5 points. 4 ponits for a movie and 2 points for an educational lecture. He wants to give everyone an A.
Professor Schmidt is an awesome teacher. He truly cares about his students and loves what he does for living. He has a great sense of humor. Easy class if you go to class, take notes, and study a day before the midterms. Also, going to class isn't boring at all, because his jokes make class fun and worthwhile.
Im not big of a Biology guy but I enjoyed this class alot and got an A. Study through the Coursepack, Do the Extra Credit and Read the Lecture Notes and you will most certainly have an A. He is AWESOME, Great sense of humor, Easy to understand and is very passionate about what he teaches.
Great Professor! Makes hard material very easy to understand. I loved going to his lectures. If you put in at least some effort and interest into class, you'll get a good grade. He also gives a lot of extra credit, so just take advantage of that and do some studying, and you'll be good.
Nice and cool prof ever!Extra credits raises individual grades, don't count toward curve.5pts max for TA quiz,2pts 4 blood donate.General easy class, but LOTS of simple memorization.Must know diff kind of bacteria,etc."Textbook"is$110,"edupack"consist of all class notes/online.Just focus on notes.Attendance not req,but it only helps!
Schmidt genuinely cares for his students and wants them to do well, even if it means he goes over material slow and get behind on the syllabus. I wouldnt say its an easy A bc u must study notes intensely, but if u do that, an A is easy! Take advantage of extra credit! Might get hard at times (very few) BUT TAKE SCHMIDT BECAUSE HE'S AMAZING!
A very nice and helpful professor. He wants everyone to do well and is willing to help so all you have to do is talk to him. The class is a bit demanding as you will need to Understand and Memorize lots of slides for each exam-study ahead of time and dont cram. And the class is interesting, most likely u will like it too. And he is funny too.
Class is all memorization, very easy if you read the material, lectures are on video in the coursepack so attendance is not mandatory. He is a genuinely nice guy but the utas he chose this semester were awful. You get 3 exams, 1 dropped plus cumulative final and extra quizzes every week at uta's office hours plus some random extra credit.
Pure memorization! The book and his lecture is pretty straightforward (his lectures are based off the slides in the book), though when the test comes around it's a bit hard. If biology isn't your thing, don't take this course. He goes off tangent a lot in class too; but overall nice guy.
He's a very good teacher. if you miss a lecture, u can watch the video online. Study ur lecture notes n it's all memorization just like any other bio classes. he gives out A LOT of extra credit so make sure you take advantage of it. If you do your work(they're not hard) it's definitely an easy A or A- course
This class is incredibly easy. Just memorize everything and you'll be fine. He gives an insane amount of extra that could get you from a B+ to an A. There's really no point in going to lectures. Really good choice for an E dec or a GPA booster.
had him for bio 101 and bio 150 GREAT professor & really tries to keep lame topics like ecosystems somewhat interesting. he always tries to engage the class in discussions that deal with the topic. overall funny guy & great professor decently difficult tests in both classes & lots of memorization. if u go to class he gives hints for the tests
I had him for BIO 101/150 and he's a really nice guy and easy teacher. His tests aren't hard at all and he gives a lot like 11 pts of extra credit. I definetly recommend his classes. He's the best science teacher I had by far.
Took BIO101 to fill a DEC. Didn't show up to lectures, relied mostly on the taped lectures which were online (part of the EduPack used for the class) and managed to pull off an A. Tests are easy. And even if you find them difficult, there's lots of opportunity for extra credit. Highly recommend this professor.
I didn't do so hot on the midterms cause I didn't goto class or read the textbook- but the final was awesome. He's a great teacher and really knows his stuff. HIGHLY recommend.
LOVE this professor. He makes it fun, he is interesting, and actually makes the information relevant! Yes, I am a Bio major, but anyone who just needs a DEC this is an easy class!! (but then again I took ap bio in high school so i was already ahead but still). Go to class. Take the notes. Pay attention. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Wonderful professor. He makes the material very easy to understand. You don't necessarily have to go to the lectures, but it helps. No need to use the textbook, there is plenty of information in the lecture slides he provides. He is also a very nice person outside of the class.
He gives so much extra credit impossible not to get an A
BEST professor at SB I've taken so far. he makes it fun and extremely easy to understand i deff recommend him!!!
He is a great professor! He is soo funny and makes class interesting :) I def. recommend him.
He is awesome! Funny and really nice! Cares about students and wants us to do well.
interesting class, hard exams, great teacher
Very generous. Crystal clear lectures. Buy the EDU pack for past exams and lectures (or look for people selling it). Very easy A. minimal effort. 11 points in extra credit to your FINAL average. Very nice and kind professor and people take advantage. 5 stars.
Okay I normally don't write reviews but I had a great experience with Professor Schmidt. He is a nice man who wants everyone to get an A. It is true he gives up to 11 points on your final average. Also he has a VERY generous scale on each test as well as your final average. I would definitely recommend taking this class as a DEC E! No HW 3 tests
Attendance optional, & lecture slides are posted online. He gives up to 11 points of EC to your GRADE for the semester. EC quizzes every week & a movie at the end of the semester. No HW but 3 tests & 1 final. Buy/share the book/access code, it's extremely useful if you don't go to class, it has old finals and interactive lectures/quizzes. Easy A.
He is a wonderful professor. Did a great job at explaining the material and overall being a great teacher. His extra credit was VERY helpful up to 11 points. The curve was awesome and he deserves to get an award for his great structure of the class and how he breaks up the lectures. He is funny and makes biology interesting love him.
Such a wonderful professor. He truly cares about his students and is the SWEETEST professor who has ever taught me. He gives 11 extra credit points added to your final GRADE (NOT final exam).. 3 exams and 1 final (one exam gets dropped). The EDUpack was very easy to understand. He makes Biology so simple! SUCH a great man. I will really miss him.<3
GREAT professor. Possibly the best at Stony. Very clear on what he wants you to know. He's funny too so going to lecture isn't painful. Interesting class too. Very willing to help. Extra credit: blood donation 3 pts and then 5 pts for weekly quizzes. "Book" is just lecture slides, but useful b/c it's concise.
Course material = crazy! Really have to keep up with the concepts because the final is cumulative and worth almost half your grade. Online Lectures are the same exact lectures in class so attending lecture isn't necessary but he will emphasize material to be tested on. Lots of extra credit. Hard tests but with curves. Overall interesting class.
Easy A. This class is pure memorization. Extra Credit is unncessary(8 pts) as the exams are easy. Professor Schmidt is the best biology professor out there and is extremely receptive to his students. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is a biology/biochem major.
Probably one of the easiest upper division Bio courses you can take aside from Bio 358. A LOT of extra credit (8 pts towards final grade). This course does involve a lot of memorization. His final is cumulative but the curve for the final was high. Attendance is not mandatory because he says almost the same thing in the videos. Fun professor.
Took Bio 315 Microbiology as a summer class. He was a great professor, all mult. choice test, grades are 30% test 1 + 30% test 2 + 40% final. Five pts extra credit on top of final grade if you donate blood or do an alternative assignment. I would take more classes with him.
Awesome Professor, Just getting back into school and professor Schmidt is FANTASTIC!! Wish all my professors could be just like him.
I loved this class. He is easily one of the best professors at SB, and he is so approachable and a nice person in general. I'm sad that he doesn't teach more upper-level courses, because I would take all of them! I really loved this class and all of the content. I'm now a microbiology person!
Very enjoyable class. Take this class to learn and as a GPA booster!
nice guy, easy class. Notes are on BB, pages from the textbook can be found on streamingtutors.com. Don't buy the textbook. the only thing useful about it is that it's a hardcopy and that it has an online code. His lectures can be interesting or boring, it really depends on the day. Overall i highly recommend this class, it's easy.
I LOVE HIM. He is amazing and I would very much enjoy being betrothed to him.
class was easy enough, i took it for a DEC and got an A-. He thinks he's a genius when he really isn't, and some things I learned about in 10th grade Bio he had "forgotten" answers to. 87 or above is an A, generally speaking.
Hes the man! Not a stressful class at all. He is very approachable. Do what you got to do and you will be fine.
Exams straight from the notes, notes are clear, and very helpful. Super nice too
Easiest DEC E! Prof is funny, class is not *that* boring, and most importantly, class is not mandatory! A bunch of extra credit, easy tests, and no homework.
Yes he is a very nice person, but class-wise...MICRBIO IS HARD! He explains information very clearly in class, but you have to buy the $106 "textbook" because he doesn't post lectures on blackboard. The text are the slides. THE EXAMS ARE TRICKY! you can go into the exam thinking you know everything and come out with a 50.
As someone who is not strong in the field of sciences, this professor was great. I came out learning something from each lecture even though the classes are not mandatory. He gives you every possible chance to do well. He offers an extra credit. And he is very willing to help. Lectures are online. Good semse of humor, take his class!
Everyone says the class is easy, it's not. He is so boring, he makes you buy a stupid edu pack of $100+ and you go into the exam thinking you know everything and end up with a 50.
AMAZING!!
Lot of information for a non-science student looking for dec, but Schmidt is super nice, makes lecture not so bad, $100 edu pack sucks but if you study practice tests youll do great. TAKE THE EXTRA CREDIT QUIZES every week!! at the end of the semester, you could have 5 points added on to your average, and theres another ec- he wants you to do well!
Exams can have tricky questions but thats why you should study the old exams from the edu pack, take extra credit quizes too. I got an A- over last summer. He is always willing to help, e-mail is hard to reach him b/c he is busy. Nicest guy, study the edu pack and youll do well.
The textbook is so expensive & virtually useless. He is a nice guy, but no way near as funny as he thinks he is. Lectures are boring but the tests aren't bad if you study. There are many opportunities for extra credit which is great!! I recommend this class for an easy A, but it's not fun!
If you have basic bio knowledge, all you have to do for this course is memorize memorize memorize. Prof is extremely nice and funny. Edu pack does help for students who dont want to attend class. 2nd exam was difficult but first and final is okay as long as you look over old exams.
I missed the first exam cause i overslept and did horribly on the next 2 exams but did the extra credit and studied past exams for the final. Ended up with a B but pissed cause i could have gotten an A so easily! Def take this class if u put in a little effort.
Nicest Professor ever. He is so motivated and makes the lecture so interesting and lively. Attendance is not mandatory but its worth going to. He makes the lectures interesting and ACTUALLY teaches unlike other professors at STONY. His exams are really easy and directly from his notes. One of the best bio classes at STONY with Professor Schmidt!!
Just keep doing the extra Credit and focus somewhat in the class and read the text--you should be good.
Incredibly fair upper div bio as far as SBU standards. schmidt is clear, concise, and funny. lectures arent close to mandatory as he puts up alternate lectures online. exams are fair, if you know it, you'll do well and his curve/cutoffs are as good as you're gonna get at SBU. honestly if you have problems w/ micro you're in trouble.
Attend all his lectures but more importantly, take his extra credit quizzes each week. The questions on the quiz are exactly the same on the exam. Also he rewards students at lectures if he sees attendance is low. Like telling us the final exam diagrams in lecture.
Nice guy. But gives 10 points on final average through quizzes and watching a movie. Curves it so a 90 is an A. Also offers practice tests online. Makes getting an A really doable.
Easy A. 10 points on the final average are possible to get, with the curve the A is really low, and he gives tests from the previous years with the same questions on it. However, DO NOT buy the book, you'll waste $100 for nothing!
He tries to make a boring subject interesting. Class isn't hard. I go just to make things simple but it's not a must. He makes a lot of weird jokes and gives tons of extra credit. Good dec class.
This class is a complete farce. The professor spends most of his time monotonously reading over class notes. I learned everything through the textbook. Extremely boring, and the professor uses far too many broad reaching statements that are impossible to verify. If you study the textbook and hw questions hard enough, you will get a good grade.
Extremely disappointed!!!! I felt like he wasn't even familiar with the textbook and alway making the content unclear.Exam and HW are so hard and no any extra credit. C on average class!
Schmidt is a beacon of light in the void of existence that is Stony Brook University. During office hours he assured me "I will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel my child." A lot of professors could learn a lot from you, don't go changing for no one
This was a unique experience since this was the first semester in which they changed the curriculum for this class. So, the notes were different, the tests were different, the textbook was different. So it threw schmidt and the students off a bit. It was a new transition for all of us. Regardless, he is a good teacher and his tests were fair.
Don't buy/ read the textbook. You only need the WileyPlus card for homework which is 7 points out of 100. Schmidt reminds me of a high school bio teacher i had; he's very clear and approachable. As long as you watch the echos you should be fine. Easiest upper divisional bio class stony brook has to offer. Difficulty is equal to that of BIO 201.
Class is pretty easy. He gives a ton of extra credit quizzes and an extra credit movie at the end of the semester. He makes it extremely hard to fail the class or even get less than a C. Do not buy the text book you won't need it at all. Overall nice guy, tells weird jokes sometimes but makes the class interesting & worthwhile
Even with the changes to the course, still an extremely easy upper division bio course. Minimal studying required. HW is no good though.
Professor Schmidt was one of the best science professors I have ever had. He explains all the topics concisely and clearly. Highly recommend!
Offers a lot of extra credit! Tests are pretty straight forward and not that tricky. All notes are posted online but if you don't want to read the book/do the online activities you should attend lecture. Either work, but both are not necessary.
Gives a ton of extra credit- up to 10 full points added to your final grade! You need to know the textbook material as well as class notes to do well on the exams. Out of 3 midterms, only 2 count towards your final grade as the lowest score gets dropped. He's very friendly and approachable.
Drop dead easy professor. For an A: 1. Do homework 2. Memorize the slides
He is good guy, but you never have to go to class. His lectures were boring and they should not have been an hour and 20 minutes. He thinks he is funny and the class just drags on. Besides the point that he never answers his email, he is a good teacher and you will get good grades. But does not provide a review session :
He's a good Bio Professor but I had a hard time understanding him. He's a bit unorganized and his test are hard. He will help you out, only if you ask him for help.
he's a GREAT professor upto 10 points for extra credit, exams based off of slides he really wants you to do well. cares about his students which is so pretty much rare in any bio class TAKE HIM!
Lectures are always super interesting and relevant. Seriously the best nutrition teacher I've had. He's very straight forward, tells you what is and isn't on the test. Love the way he gives us the powerpoint packets. Office hours are also very helpful
Prof. Schmidt was an awesome teacher for BIO 101! It was a large lecture class but very few people actually went to class. I, personally, went to almost every lecture; even though the slides are posted online, he gives really good tips and pointers during the actual lecture (sometimes he'll even reveal something that will be on the exam!).
This professor is dope. I haven't enjoyed a science class in a while and it's not like it's my favorite now, but the way he teaches makes everything relatable and even interesting... plus he's a funny dude. Props to Professor Schmidt! You only need the textbook for homework. But his exams are on slides. And there are Echoes.
Taking this class currently. Schmidt is one of the nicest guys in the Biology Dept. He IS a good lecturer but he would be better if he was more sure of himself. Microbiology is an ever-changing field so it is difficult for him to know the material inside and out. However, a very straight forward class. If you study you will get an A. Simple.
go to office hrs or never get help with this prof, but he warns you of this first day of class. Ignored emails are common; don't take it personally. homework is annoying and can be the difference between an A and an A- if you're not getting 98s on all the tests. He backtracks hella often during lectures; textbook is better than him tbqh
Definitely tied with a few professors as the kindest at Stony Brook. Helpful and understanding. Posts slides and lectures are available with the purchase of the textbook.
general biology; human biology
Professor Schmidt is a wonderful professor. He summarizes the contents of the textbook, but it is also helpful to look at the textbook from time to time. Try visiting him during office hours. He is interesting to talk to. Exams are straightforward. Just spend time committing the lectures to memory.
Overall great class, so many opportunities for extra credit. Makes learning basic biology a lot of fun! You don't need to buy the book but the online edu-pack gave me an A.
Professor Schmidt is highly knowledgeable about the course material. During his office hours, he is good at answering questions and explaining things. Yet, during lectures, he rambles on a lot and gets distracted quite easily. This would often result in him not going over all of the material in lectures.
Nice guy, obviously passionate about his field. That being said, his lectures are very frustrating because he constantly goes off topic and spends a lot of time talking about irrelevant things. If you are a Type A student who prefers to stay on topic, choose another professor. Otherwise, he's fine.
Took for summer class. His lecture slides are clear and it's clear he cares about his students. Can get off topic in class, but genuinely wants you to pass and do well. The textbook is a topic I can't say for or against - if you think you need it, get it. His lectures and studying were enough for me to pass well off.
Took his class over the summer. Literally, study the slides and the EDU pack and you will be fine. A lot of the test questions are already on EDU Pack. He gives extra credit in the end. I was the last person to stay for the final and yup got an A. He's funny with his stories but mostly he wants you to do good.
He was a fine professor until the final grades came in. I did not do bad on the exams and received a far lower grade then expected. When trying to email about grading criteria the professor pretty much said it is what it is without explaining the cutoff for each letter, and then stated not contact him about grades anymore. Truly disgusting!!
Goes off tangent all the time but really nice guy and cares about his student. He wants you to do well. He can be very disorganized because hes not used to teaching huge classes like SBU has. So, for optimal help talk to him after class or his office hours.
Makes the class feel like it's not just a shove-as-much-MCAT/ pre-med-info-down-your-throats type thing. One "tip" for Prof. Schmidt if you read this: give your presentation by yourself out-loud that way we don't have to hear the brainstorming/rambling and it's pre-written on the slides. Still, sincerely, you are miles ahead of other BIO300+ profs!
Both Honey and Schmidt are very nice guys. Theyre often overhyped though . Regardless the entire class is just an average of tests. Theres absolutely no other portions of assignments or grades incorporated into the average. For those who are not good test takes this has the possibility of being devastating. Has the potential of being a good class
absolutely horrible professor, does not know how to explain the material at all, does not know how to teach. He just goes on about his tangent instead of actually teaching you stuff. Also makes a lot of mistakes during lectures. Test were horrible as well since he cant explain the material at all.
Probably one of my favorite professors at stony. The material can be tough but if you put in the work, you can get a good grade. His tangents are highly insightful and really make you think deeply about the material. Yes, he makes mistakes here and there and should probably come more prepared but overall excellent professor with fair exams.
Terrible teacher. Is terrible in explaining lectures and goes off on tangents and never finishes covering the material. He is always behind.
His exams do not accurately test whether you know the material or not, and for a course graded entirely on exams I would expect ones that didn't feel like they were written the day prior.
So Professor Schmidt is not a bad professor if he did not make so many mistakes on every lecture and tangents about things that are not on the exam. It is crazy but I was surprised that for a class that is primarily memorization he could actually confuse students with trying to lecture. Seemed like a decent person though.
Do yourself a favor and don't ever take a class with this "professor." He is absolutely disgraceful and has no knowledge on the subject he "teaches" It is truly sad for this class to exist. It is among the worst of classes offered at Stony Brook, and the worst I have ever taken. Grading and exams are not indicative of knowledge. Very frustrating.
I have no problems with his teaching style. As someone who has always struggled in Bio he is very fair and you can do well BUT you need to put in the work! I will say Prof. Honey and him are completely different lecturers so some like him better and others did better with Honey. He is more an collaborative teacher and likes conceptual learning.
