grade is based only on a midterm, one paper, and the final so you have to do well, but you learn a beast load about what you cover.
this class is very boring. i wake up when everyones already gone all the time. he's changed it since last semester and now theres two midterms, an art paper, and a final. pretty much everything in the lectures are discussed in class.
dr simms is a straightforward professor, clear in his directions. Class is not especially difficult if you make sure you pay attention to concepts he repeats during class.
Not too difficult of a class if you show up and take decent notes. He's very clear about the material he teaches. The class is based on two midterms, a paper, and the final exam (non-cumulative). Might not like the class if you don't find art interesting.
He is a good teacher, but at times its boring.
he's a great professor. he covers the material very clearly and you can catch on with his notes quickly. the tests aren't that hard either.
He is Good as long as you pay attention because he gives clear and well-organized lectures in class. There are 3 tests and one report paper. Overall, it was not hard class.
Dr. Simms is probably the most concise and clear professor at CSULB. He gives very detailed lectures, which if you take great notes from, you will get straight A's. He is also very good at listening to a students concerns. A+++
Good teacher, strict about attendance. Tests are extremly hard and you have to remember tons of material! If you go to every class and take notes you should be ok.
Hundreds of images to memorize. Not very interesting.
Best art history professor I've had so far. He makes the subject interesting. After every class, I feel like I've learned so much. His tests aren't very hard and although you have a lot of slides to study from, you retain a lot of the information you hear in class because he's such an effective speaker.

Are we grading on looks? If you take notes, you'll be fine. Also, don't look spaced-out or he'll call on you.
very confusing
Awesome lecturer, clear & fair grading. Course is broken up into manageable 3 parts each w/a test at the end. The final is just the final test, non-cummunlative. Tests are all written, w/3 slide comparisons, & a short essay. Grades on naming fundamental ideas, not grammar/structure. There's also one paper; it's pretty easy, just follow directions.
Wonderful teacher!!!! The best art history teacher I've had. Clear, Patient,Informed. He gives great lectures- I never read the text, but got all A's on test because of how clear he is. He makes the information interesting and fun.

Extremely organized lectures, genuine enthusiasm for art history, looks a little like Greg Kinnear. Made class very enjoyable.
Extremely clear and informative lectures. He tests on overriding concepts and shows genuine interest in the subject. We had to go to an art exhibit for a paper, which was fun.
Bonsoir Cousin, je suis l'auteur de la généalogie des Cordina, si vous voulez quelques renseignements voici mon e-mail [email protected] Cordina Hélène
Incorporates historical relevance and ties into artists, art-works and movements. As an artist myself, I have really come to learn a lot about where art is going. Matt has a really cool temperament and tests only on important subject matter.
I've taken a lot of classes with Dr Simms. Don't let his devilish good looks fool you. He is extremely intelligent and his breadth of knowledge about art history is huge. Beware he grades papers a little more harshly than the tests. but he is always available and enthusiastic to help in that arena.
nice man, generally a bit dull, but better to take him than som eof the other instructors
Very clear and intelligent and makes the class interesting. Take this prof if you can. I've taken plenty of classes with him.
Awesome professor! Course reader is hefty but the excellent diverse essays inside it are hand-picked for relevance. Emphasis is on writing which is a good thing for Art History majors. Great intellectual discussions in class with his query method of teaching. Dr. Simms attracts a great following of students with just cause. Fair grading system.
excellent professor. gets down to business and knows exactly what he is talking about. keeps you interested in the work. just listen in class and you dont have to read the book.

THE BEST! A very very rare class where you learn alot about a subject and get a good grade! I got an A. I bought the book but barely used it. ALL his lectures are informative, engaging, and interesting! I Highly recommend him. He reminds me of Steve Carell. Has a sense of humor. Overall, 3 exams on 3 sections & 1 paper. ALL EASY A's.. MUST take
You need to show up and take good notes. I didn't use the textbook and still got an A. He tests on the big ideas which he covers in class. Tests are based on writing, not multiple choice. 3 tests and a paper are worth 25% of the grade each.
he is a bit dull but interesting at the same time. you have to get over his dull way of presenting the material to see how interesting the material is. most of the lecture is based on the reading which he thoroughly covers in class so it's hardly necessary to read before hand. a fair grader and there for his students.
Make sure you copy the notes if you miss a class (you can only miss 3 unexcused), notes are more important than book. He offers review sessions before every test (they're all writing) so go to those if you need help. As long as you study the notes well you will be fine.
All in all, Professor Simms is a great guy, and any art buff would enjoy his class. He tends to focus more on Impressionist painters, so Monet fans rejoice.
His classes are always interesting, and it's very easy to get an A if you come to every class, do the readings, and pay attention.
Dont need the book. go to class and TAKE NOTES!!! that's all i had to do to get an A. if u happen to fall asleep during his lectures.... EASY. go back home and look up the piece of art work urself.
um, i think he's overrated. how does he remind one of steve carell? i guess his voice is similar. he didn't answer my email once. his class is very boring & takes up the entire period, but the material is straightforward & easy if you study. gets very frustrated over little things. very nerd-hot. i keep randomly bumping into him on campus, haha.
The class and subject matter is easy. I didn't open my textbook once, he's clear in what he wants but his attitude is a bit jerkish sometimes. He likes to over explain things that we already know about (beachboard, the civil rights movement, colonial times.) He's qualified to teach but he's just very blah and needs an attitude adjustment.
He is very excited about the subjects we cover in class. Going over the textbook is really necessary. An A is attainable, but have fun memorizing artworks for the exams.
I previously took same class with other professor and Simms is SO MUCH BETTER. connects paintings with history and movements with clear themes. studying is easy as long as you don't wait til the last minute. i made 3x5 cards, they do wonders for the memorization.
Fantastic professor! Very passionate about what he teaches. He makes the class really interesting and is very clear on his expectations. Only 3 exams in the class - don't even need the book, Dr. Simms IS the textbook! Very nice guy, pretty easy class. If you're gonna take art history, take Simms. :)
Great Professor. He might sound nerdy, but he is great teacher. It's kinda funny to see him getting super excited over the subject b/c he loves art. All you have to do to get an A in this class is to take good notes for *(star items) and memorize them. Not very easy, but not hard either, just memorize-
nice guy, handsome, interesting, enthusiastic, totally stoked all the time, rants about not "Circulating" the attendance sheet, really funny in a nonchalant way
This guy is real good a teaching this subject. I became so interested that if it wasn't because art majors suck and get paid literally nothing, I would have change my major to art history from aerospace engineering.
Really interesting class, too bad it's so cozy in the theater-I fought to stay awake, but it wasn't that hard since he taught with enthusiasm. He had a subtle sense of humor so it kept things light in class. Textbook NOT mandatory, don't spend $100 on the book! There's 1 paper and 3 exams, all fairly easy if you follow directions/pay attention
Great energy from this guy. He loves art history, loves teaching and it shows. He is a stickler about attendance but fair. I took him for Fall '09 and I am going to take him again for upper division. I wouldn't say he is the easiest but everything is straight forward. Do the work, study and you got an A.
He is soooo helpful! If you come to class, you will get an A. Everything he says is crystal clear and he wants you to be creative for the paper! It says that it should be about art, however I am a film major so he said a film paper would be perfect! Which I highly appreciated, the tests and final is very simple if you pay attention. :D
Gives you all the terms you need to know. Then goes over every single one of them in class. You do not need to buy the book because he goes over what he wants on the exams in class. Easy A+!
Great professor, and not bad to look at either!
Simms is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about Art History. His enthusiasm translates to lectures so class is always interesting. There are 2 exams and one paper and he explains the exams before hand so the format is not a surprise. Id you need to take an upper division Art History, take Simms!
Passionate but boring. His tests are kind of hard. When he says he wants you to compare pictures he means it. Just writing about the portrait will get you very little points. 3 tests and 1 paper, each worth 100 pts. Paper is very easy, free 100 pts.
If you go to class and write down what he says straight A. 2 midterms 1 final and 1 paper.
Such a good teacher. He's really easy to understand and he's super nice. Easy class. Take him!
This class is easy even if you don't like art history. As long as you can understand the major ideas of each art work and can write about it, you will do fine on tests. Book was more like "advised" reading than mandatory. Paper was easy, he is just concerned that you actually get out and look at some art work in person.
Great teacher! Probably the best Art History teacher I've had. Grades are based on a mid term, a term paper and the final, but he doesn't pack the tests with more memorization than humanly possible. Would definitely take him again!
His lectures can be boring but it just depends on how interested you are in the subject. He is a very educated man who speaks fluently and clearly in every lecture. His test are simple if you study, and the paper was easy, just don't wait till the last minute to do it. Overall, easy A. Just pay attention, take good notes, and make good notecards.
Goood professor, don't need book! Just be there and take notes :) easy A but you have to study hard :) test are kinda hard but i manage to get A ^^
Very easy, don't need books, clear explanations, minimal assignments, simple tests, pretty decent speaker, and easy on the eyes!
Very knowledgeable and gives great lectures. Went into this class expecting boredom but I was pleasantly surprised. The tests are easy, and the paper just has to follow some very basic rules. Easy to pass, easy to learn. Don't bother with the textbook.
Even though I would periodically fall asleep during his class, the fact that he's really enthusiastic about what he teaches really helps. 3 tests, 1 paper. Study, I made note cards. He's really nice, and cute, not gonna lie. Studied for 2hrs B4 every test and got an overall A in the course. Study and it'll be a piece of cake.
Awesome professor, made art history more approachable, even for an engineer. His exams were extremely easy, a couple of hours prior to them can easily net you a high B or an A. The paper he has is also fairly easy if you are good at writing, but mostly it bumps your grade if you put in the effort. I highly recommend this professor for this class.
This man is so passionate about art history, it's adorable. Before, I was generally interested in art, but now I'm in love with it because his enthusiasm is just so infectious. VERY easy class, pretty simple, and if you need help, he's the most polite. He's handsome with a subtle sense of humor, very articulate and soft-spoken. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Simply the best, always enjoyed coming to class, his enthusiasm is infectious and motivates you to love art as much as he. Wish he would lecture all my classes...
Really interesting lectures! He really gets into what he's talking about & you learn a lot! He does take attendance. There are three tests in which you compare several paintings & includes an essay. There is also a 3 page paper in which you write about a work of art you visit. Each is 25% of your grade so if you don't do 1 thing, bye bye A or B!
Dr. Simms was amazing. He really was knowledgeable and appropriately funny. Take him you will enjoy it.
He is really great. His lectures are thorough. He tells you what is going to be on the exam and has a study session. He is very helpful and clear. 4 assignments worth 25% each and he does take attendance.
The class is very easy. 3 exams, 1 three-page paper, and one awesome lecturer. The man really loves what he do. Ask question after class than during his lecture because he hates to be disturbed. If you really want an easy A take this class.
This class is 3 exams and one very easy paper. The thing with this class is that you need to attend the lectures and remember the starred items, which is about 40 for each exam. You have to recall the artist, name of the painting, date and art movement. If you can to that, take the class. He is very easy on grading.
I love professors that are passionate about what they teach, and Dr. Simms definitely is. I'm not an art major, and he made Art History very fun and interesting. His tests are easy if you take the time to memorize everything--he gives you the list of paintings and artists that are on the exams. Really enjoyed his class!
The material isn't the most exciting but he made it seem that way. His enthusiam when giving the lecture helped to keep me interested. As long as you study the material a bit, its an easy A.
3 Exams and 1 paper on a work of art from a museum. He's very passionate about the material and tries to make it interesting. Sometimes it's hard to stay awake since his voice is soothing and the UT is dark. He's a very easy grader. Don't need the book at all! Everything's on the lecture. Great class! I wish he taught all AH!
Class is fairly easy. Don't bother buying the book; his lectures have plently of information. He's very passionate and easy to approach.
seriously an amazing teacher. Ive taken 3 of his classes now and always find his art descriptions specific and spot on. hes passionate in the way he talks which makes you want to pay attention. easy class IF YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES and show up (ON TIME) to class...ive gotten an a on every assignment :)
FAVORITE AH TEACHER! I like learning about AH, but I tend to find it boring, however, Simms makes this class SO interesting. He is passionate about AH and you learn SO much from him. I recommend him to all my friends, wish there were more AH professor's like him. Take him! You won't regret it.
Dr. Simms knows what he's talking about, and is very clear about what he expects. I hated art history before this course, but now I have learned to appreciated it because of the way he has explained it. Attend lectures and make sure you study; you'll pass. Three exams and 1 easy paper about any art piece you want. TAKE THIS COURSE!
This was an incredible class. Dr. Simms tells an amazing tale of history and art that weaves from the Renaissance through 1960s. The classes were enjoyable and enlightening. 3 exams and a paper. For an art GE, this class would be hard to beat.
Matt's class is very interesting and fun. Though, I did find it hard to stay awake sometimes because the UT room is very dark. There are 3 easy exams and 1 paper. All you need to know for exams is the name, date, artist, and movement of works of art. This class is an easy A if you take the time to memorize all the info.
There are 3 tests and a Paper. Paper is super easy three pages and assigned at the beginning of the semester and due near the end. Each test covers lectures. Show up you sign in for attendance. You can leave after if you want but i recommend you stay since theres no book and the lectures are everything and he hints at things. Non cumulative
Dr. Simms is extremely passionate about his lectures and teaches quite some intellectual subjects. Attendance is mandatory and lectures can be long, but the class is quite easy as long as you take the time to sit down and memorize dates, titles, and names of works of art. Not difficult at all to get an A if you put some effort down.
Dr. Simms is extremely intellectual and knows what he's talking about. You will learn a lot in this class, even though this material may not apply to your future life at all. This class is an easy A as long as you study for what he tells you to study for (pretty straight forward exams). Taking this class as it'll enlighten your understanding of art
Dr. Simms is very passionate about what he teaches and the way he does it is very entertaining. It's like story telling! He is very clear and the exams and very typical of art history classes: slide IDs, comparisons and an essay question. He also has one short paper due. Just attend class, take notes, and memorize the IDs and you'll get an A.
Simms is a very amazing professor when it comes to art history. He talks about the art as if it's a story. He's very interesting and doesn't drag on or tell you facts you don't need to know. Attend class and take notes, study, and you will do just fine in his class.
Simms is a good professor. His lectures are kind of boring. Class is mandatory as you need to sign in and take notes for the midterms. The paper is easy and you a lot of time to complete it. No Book! I have to say, I wouldn't take his class again just cause its a lot of memorizing. Definitely able to do really well. Can be on his rag somedays.
Exams are based on lecture, so take good notes. No need for textbook. Exams are easy if you paid attention in class. It's important to learn the artist name, date, and title of painting for the paintings that will appear on the exams (he gives a list online). Good professor.
Simms is hands-down the best art history professor I have ever taken. He's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the material. He is very clear about the information you should study for exams. If you ever have questions, he is very receptive to student concerns. I've taken three of his art history courses, and I have yet to be disappointed.
There are only 3 exams and a paper. Attendance is not mandatory, but everything he teaches will be on the exams. The textbook is not necessary, just class notes, so make sure you take many. He is not a tough grader. The exams are open response, so write everything you know, memorize the names of the paintings and you'll get an A.
Great professor! He is very passionate about the subject. 3 exams including the final, 1 paper. Attendance is in a sense non-mandatory, but if you don't show up, you miss out on a lot of crucial info. Tests are super easy!
I cannot recommend this professor enough. His lectures are clear and straightforward; he will state explicitly what you need to know about each artwork. You can take notes on only the star items but the other paintings he discuss helps you understand further about that art movement. The paper and three (noncumulative) exams are very easy.
This class was a breeeze. His lectures are honestly all you really need to pass so take good notes. He's very clear, easy to understand and only tests on his starred items. He has 3 tests and 1 very easy paper. Tests include 3 art comparisons and a short essay, but they're incredibly easy.
He's one of the best professors I've ever had. He makes learning about Art History so much fun. Great guy, easy grader. Tests are easy if you show up to class and study your flashcards. You need to memorize the different movements, the artist, the piece, and the date but by Test 3 you'll be a pro at memorization. Take this class for your GE!!!!!!!!
Dr. Simms is one of the best. His lectures are entertaining, informative, and clear on what art pieces to study for when it comes to exams. Reading the book is not necessary if you pay attention, therefore avoid skipping lectures. Easy paper towards the end of the semester, and credit is given for attendance. Pay attention for the starred items. :)
The best Art History professor I've had. His lectures and slides are incredibly well organised and clear. Just show up to class, take some notes, and you'll do great! There are review sessions before each exam, so if you don't always go to class, make sure to attend those. Highly recommend this class.
Out of all the professors I've had, prof. Simms is by far the best. He is very passionate about his work. Explains all his lectures in a way where you are Guaranteed to understand everything. I would strongly recommend this professor. Even if you are not an art history major, you'll be sure to enjoy this class.
I love him!! He makes jokes from time to time during lecture because art history is a boring subject. There are 3 exams and 1 research paper. All I had to do was study the artist's name, art title, year, and category because once I saw the painting I knew how to describe it from listening to all the lectures.
Literally the best prof. I've had. Show up to lectures, take little notes on starred items - 3 exams and 1 paper. Easy A's if you just pay attention and his lectures aren't that bad either, he does it as if it's storytelling and is funny too so it's not dry. He's super passionate about the subject and really nice, take his class!
Personally as a second year student and this being a low division course I thought itd be okay, I regret taking this class it was honestly too much for a low division course. Avoid taking this class expects u to remember 30 different paintings, their year, movement too much work.
Literally known as one of the best art history teachers in the department. Basic memorization of images, dates and artists (about 23-25) but that is the norm for AH classes. Gives great, animated and fully enthusiastic lectures, which make note taking and studying easy. TAKE HIS CLASS! You will learn alot.
His class wasn't bad, it was mostly memorization of the artist, name of work, and dates so if you're not good with memorizing things, I don't recommend this class. You can tell he is very passionate about what he teaches and it's very nice to see. Overall a great professor.
Prof. Simms is very knowledgable about art and goes deeply in-depth about each painting. Be sure not to come in late or talk because he WILL call you out in front of the class. 3 tests and 1 (3pg) paper describing a piece of art. Have to memorize 30-35 paintings, name, artist, medium, movement, and describe each one. Don't wait last min to study!!
Professor Simms, is very lecture heavy so make sure you take really good notes. Other than that, he does not assign many things for you to turn in so make sure you do not bomb the tests or essay. There are 3 exams and one essay. You have to study 30 pieces per exam so don't wait until the last minute to study. This class is an easy A if you study.
Dr. Simms was great. I really enjoyed his lectures and found the content fascinating. Three midterms and an essay, so it's easy to make or break your grade. Lots of memorization of artists, dates, etc for the tests. Not really a fan of his written test style but the lectures made up for it. You --MUST-- take notes in class or you will not do well.
Professor Simms is a great professor. His class has 3 exams and 1 paper, but it is not difficult. However, you must attend and take notes. Easy A class if you take good notes and study.
This guy is great. He is clearly passionate abt art history, so the lectures are interesting and you actually learn something. There are only four assignments (3 exams + a paper), so make sure you study well, but he's a very (very) easy grader so don't stress too hard. Pay attention n take good notes during lectures (I promise they're not boring!).
Mr. Simms was amazing! Very informational lectures, however, they sometimes tend to drag. Gives 3 major exams and a paper, so not much assignments. Show up to lectures and you'll be fine. Lots of paintings, artists, and dates to memorize for exams so watch out!
Best art history professor at csulb! His lectures are extremely clear, he provides study guides, and records the lectures for those who missed a class. This makes the learning process very easy and not stressful.
Best art history professor I've ever had! He never gave any homework and we only a couple of exams and he told us exactly what we needed to know for the exams. He was also very nice and understanding, would definitely recommend!
Professor Simms is awesome! I just had him online this semester for AH 11B, the class was really easy and interesting and his lectures are very detailed and thorough. Don't miss class or be late tho bc sometimes he doesn't let late students into the zoom meeting haha (happened to me once), but he does post recordings which was really helpful :)
Professor Simms is a really nice guy and very knowledgeable when it comes to art history. He requires you to remember about 20-25 pieces of art work and their meaning for each exam. The topic of the class is pretty boring but professor Simms does a good job teaching it.
He is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this topic. His class consists of engaging lectures that you must be present for, and for assignments you have only the midterm, final, and one essay. Take careful notes during the review sessions before the tests and you will do well. He is very kind and will compromise if you have any issues.
He gives interesting lectures. they're not sensational but he cares a lot about the material and that makes it more engaging. DON'T stress too much about the exams. HE IS A VERY VERY EASY GRADER. You only really need to pay attention to the starred items since only those will be on the exam, but study them before so you don't scramble the day of.
Dr. Simms is an incredible professor! He is so passionate about Art History that I started to like it a lot too. I highly recommend him. This class is only 3 exams and 1 paper. Make sure to take notes during the lectures and to memorize the starred items. If you study, you will most likely get an A. Take his class! He is very supportive and caring.
Simms is a great professor who is clearly very passionate about their subject and it shows. Nothing beats having a professor who is so obviously passionate about the subject matter. Simms gives very few assignments but the essays and quizzes are easy if you attend class and take notes.
Professor Simms is a really sweet professor. He is really passionate about the subject matter. The class is an easy A if you pay attention to the lectures and understand the key concepts. He usually gives a test review before the exam and that really helps you do well on the exam. There are only 3 exams and 1 paper and he is an easy grader.
Simms is kind and passionate about his teaching. His lecturing style is not boring at all and he even posts pre-recorded lectures. This class focused more on the conceptual aspect of the art movements rather than focusing on the dates. Focus on the starred items! 3 exams, 1 paper. Easy grader and grades fast too.
Good professor and interesting class. 3 written exams and 1 paper, very clear with grading and gives adequate time to complete exams. He is very enthusiastic about AH, even inspired me to look closer at art. For exams, focus on the big ideas (he repeats them many times). Class gets more complex as semester progresses but its manageable.
He is such a sweet and caring man who wants to make sure we pass his class! Throughout the whole semester, we were only graded by 3 exams and a 3 page paper about any art piece from that time period not mentioned in lecture. Lectures were intriguing, and you can tell how passionate he is about his profession.
Love Simms, he really cares about his students and is understanding of our circumstances. Summer class consisted of a writing based Midterm and Final, along with one paper during the course. I thoroughly enjoyed the subject matter and he makes it entertaining with his passion and knowledge!
I LOVE PROF SIMMS!!! I walked into art history so scared I was going to loathe this class, but I walked out with it being my favorite!! I learned so much and things were so fun to learn. Simms is so nice and understands that students have lives outside of class, everything is on beach board if you miss a lecture. I highly suggest taking this class.
The class was one of my easiest you're only graded on a few writing exams and a paper. I was worried for the writing but if you take notes and pay attention you'll be fine. He was also very understanding towards his students and incredibly passionate. I genuinely found the class interesting and learned a lot from him.
He's a nice guy, lectures are essential but attendance isn't mandatory. He posts all lectures online so you really don't have to go to class. Entire grade was based on a paper a a few exams but a fairly easy grader.
Simms is a perfect art history professor! Despite being entirely lecture, he is very engaging with his personality and voice (I personally found his voice nice to listen to). He is very knowledgable and can really get ideas through clearly! Only graded on 2 exams and a paper and if you attend class, you will be fine! He also posts lectures online!
Dr. Simms is one of the best professors I have ever had! The way he is able to foster meaningful conversations in class creates an atmosphere of authentic learning. He is incredibly knowledgable, caring and respectful of differentiating opinions. 100/10 would take again.
Lectures were very informational but a little dense. Sometimes spends a lot of time on non-starred items but gets through all of the lectures usually. Class was too big to take attendance but going to class is better since he sometimes adds starred items that are not on the pre-recorded lectures. Goof professor and very clear in his lectures.
Make sure to spend most of exam day with your essays and include as much info from his lectures and make a few of your own points once in a while. Skip other classes if you need to. The more info you have, the better your grade will be. you dont have to be a good writer. the art analysis paper is an easy 100, as long as you meet his requirements.
This class was very easy and interesting! I never got homework the entire year. The tests are online and he is an easy grader. Attendance is not mandatory but if you skip your going to have to make up the notes anyway.
Great professor. One thing to keep in mind is that this is the type of class where you want to be taking a lot of notes during the lectures. While he also has pre-recorded ones, they're not 1 to 1 with what's covered in the in person lectures. In other words, as long as you diligently take notes & come to class, you'll do just fine.
Only 3 exams and 1 paper, each 100 points. Lectures are very dense but necessary in order to pass all the exams. The exams are usually graded by TAs and they can be tough if you don't have a specific concept written down. Overall, you need to pay attention and review the pre-recorded lectures if you want to get a good grade on exams!
Not as hard of a class as others make it seem. I only showed up to class 3 times & still passed. He posts the lectures online so you can review them before the exams. He is great at lectures, always gets back to emails quickly, & is very understanding. 3 essay exams that basically determine your grade & one paper. Take good notes, study you'll b ok
I took Simms for AH436 and 437! He is a fantastic professor; his lectures are terrific and there isn't any busy work (just midterm, final, and paper). He gets the information across very well (albeit very quickly) and as long as you go to the lectures or watch the makeup recordings + take notes you will be fine on the tests. He's fun to talk to!
Overall great class. It is lecture heavy, but you only have 3 exams, and 1 small paper. The 3 exams depend on the notes you took on certain artworks. I would highly recommend this class and would 100% take it again.
Most of the class is just lectures but he is open for giving feedback throughout and outside of the class. Sometimes he gets invested in a topic that isn't specific to the test but he's good at keeping track of telling you what will be on the test, make sure you take notes because there's a lot of information. His reviews before test also help tons.
SUPER EASY CLASS! He's rlly nice and passionate about this class. 3 exam and 1 paper that's it. EASY grader! Take good notes and you'll pass with an A. Most ppl don't show up to class as he posts pre-record lectures on each chapter so you can basically learn from home. Take him if you can!
Very easy class. He is lecture-heavy but provides prerecorded lectures on Canvas. What I didn't like about this course is that your grade is based on 3 exams (essay questions, not multiple choice) and 1 paper. So, if you have a low grade it's hard to bring it up. If you like writing I would highly recommend Professor Simms!
Professor Simms's lectures are informative, though a bit dense. Attending class is better than just relying on the pre-recorded videos, as he sometimes covers additional content. For test prep, using unstuck ai alongside diligent note-taking can really pay off. Overall, a solid class if you stay engaged.
He is one of the best professors I've had. All of his lectures are prerecorded, and if you miss class, it's okay; he doesn't take attendance. He has 3 exams and 1 paper but is a light grader. He is open to reviewing your work and changing your grade if you go to office hours. I recommend talking to him; he's an interesting and nice person!
Lectures are pre-recorded so attendance is not necessary. Overall this class was very interesting to learn about, and I enjoyed the lectures! The course is only graded by 3 exams and a final paper, but you will be fine as long as you take notes and follow directions. There is no homework and the exams are fairly simple.
Super easy class! Pre-recorded lectures and attendance isnt mandatory. Just 3 exams, one paper and the final (not cumulative). Really easy-going professor and overall an interesting class to take!
Would not take this class again.
He was one of the best professors! His lectures are so interesting and shows his passion through his teaching. He says attendance is mandatory but the class is huge so he wont notice but its better to come since lecture can be heavy. Exams are all take at home and you wont need lock down browser. Very kind and willing to help you!
Art History with visuals and lectures. If you like art and history, this is class for you.
Great professor and greater class. If you enjoy art history or video essays, this class is for you. There are only four assignments, 3 exams that cover the art you learn about during lectures, and 1 paper (all done at home). He doesn't take attendance, but you should go to every lecture because everything you're quizzed on depends on it.
Great! Very good at communicating and making expectations clear!
