He is very funny and he speak French & Japanese as well as English. Pretty cool teacher.
He has a great sense of humor! A lot of reading, and quizzes on the readings, not a lot of essay's. Attendance is important. I really enjoyed the class!
He was an awesome teacher.. I highly recommend him
one hipster teacher, had much fun in his class
DO NOT take this class, unless you want a C. DO NOT think just because other people thought he was cool you should take this class. BIG MISTAKE! He grades what he thinks the answer is, there is not room for your own thoughts, he will tell you they are wrong. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO JUST STAY AWAY!!!!

Really hip guy. He keeps you entertained, but he does like to pick on people once in while. He is very helpful and encourages office hours, he goes out of his way to help. He's the best English teacher i've had yet. Just do the assigned reading and you'll be fine.
first off, he does NOT speak other languages, he FAKES it, if you couldn't notice. He often marks students down greatly on papers and after you turn in the paper he explains what he wants. He has what he calls "problem students" and has some every time he teaches.holds personal grudges like a kid.
This teacher likes to nitpick when he grades your paper. Take his class and get a C. He has a huge ego. You can't do anything to defend yourself. If he thinks you're lame, you're lame. If you used to get an A, you'll get a B in this class. If you used to get a B, you'll get a C. Unrealistic stardard of grading. *Extremely explicit language in class
He was very willing to help students even outside of the class. His comments was very helpful, and I think I learnd a lot from him. You will learn a lot more if you go to his office hour~ ^^
This teacher is awesome!!! You would think that tangents are boring and off topic but his tangents are quite amuzing and at times hilarious. Highly recommend him.
Super cool hip-meister. Loves indie music, films etc. Suprised his rating is not higher. Its my last year at Riverside but still remember him fondly as my first class at UCR. Didn't realize until later how much work he gives. If you like to write, this will be a breeze. Extends language beyond papers. Talks very casually and humorously.
I didn't understand how to write until I took his class. He was hilarious and so intelligetn about writing. Highly recommended.
Very cocky English PhD student. He describes himself as "perfect" He uses profanity constantly in class. You don't learn anything. He has an unrealistic expectation of students. Take this class with him if you want a B or a C in English.
Mr. Snyder is absolutely wonderful. I've had him as a TA on two different occasions, and each time he lectured brilliantly. He brings a clear and purposeful insight to the readings, and makes even the dullest assignments seem interesting. I can honestly say that he should have been teaching the class instead of TA'ing for it. Great guy!
He is hilarious and dedicated to his students' needs. You will learn alot from his class if you do all the work. However, he doesn't really give out A's, only high B's. But if you're in Basic Writing 3, it's a pass or fail class so grades don't really matter, just as long as you pass :)
Great professor. He doesn't give out a lot of A's...but if you're willing to put in the effort he is willing to provide a lot of incite and help. I learned a lot from this class. Be sure to do the assigned readings because there will be pop quizzes.
Mr. Snyder allows you the freedom to write in your own writing style, instead of conforming to the standards like most english teachers do. he talks with a high level of sophistication, yet always in a way that you can understand it. he's not as hard as everyone makes him out to be. READ! quizzes are 20% of grade and the quizzes are easy!
Snyder will rip you a new one. He will make you feel heartrending pain as your soul shatters and your very world crumbles beneath your feet as you spend countless hours perfecting trivial lines. He will make your eyes burn into the endless void existing in your head as you read line after line after line. Overall, really awesome professor.
I loved his class because of his sense of humor and ability to joke around. He has truly helped me use abstract thoughts & made me a confident writer. only read 2 short books. Always available, even outside of office hours. The only way to get a C is to not do anything right or miss class & nobody recieved any D's or F's. Teacher of the year.
Read two books, Pop quizzes the next day. Easy quizzes. 4 papers, 4th paper is a take home final essay so you don't need to wake up at 8am on the Monday of finals week. Great teacher, I recommend taking him. Isn't as hard as people say. If you do your work and listen to him you'll get a B or an A. Easy class and good teacher, no stress. Take him.
He will be the best professor you'll ever have at UCR. The list can go on and on. I took his class for two years and I learned soooooooooo much. He can relate to you as a student but professional enough and claim his Ph.D. He def. deserves the best for future years to come.
Grades hard on the essay because he looks for specific things. Discussion during lecture is interesting. Go to office hours because he'll tell you how to improve your essays. It's very difficult to do good otherwise.
His lectures are pretty much all about political stuff that you can learn in PoliSci. I hated going to this class but I had no choice because he would give quizzes at least 1-2 times a week out of the 3 days that we had class. The only good thing is that there are only 3 essays. A lot more reading in this class than in other Eng 1B classes.
Do not take this class! If you are here to learn english, this professor will not help you at all. Its not even an english class, all he teaches about is politics and civic stances. This was one of the useless classes i have ever taken. Interesting class but did not learn any english.
i have no idea why the last 2 comments say what they say. this class is very fun and the teacher makes it worthwhile. we only had 6 quizzes and they were SUPER easy if you did the reading. there are 3 essays and thats it. just do the reading and there is no reason why you should get anything below a B
It's a fair class. Do your reading.. you will pass your his quizzes (well, actually, if you're like me and you don't retain info after you read it.. then you might not. -_-) Answer his prompt thoroughly in the assigned essay, and you will get a fair grade. Basically, you get back what you put in.
Mr. Snyder is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. Anyone who says it isn't an English class clearly doesn't understand that English means WRITING, and in this case it is about political stuff. You don't work on sentence structure in English 1B-you can go to English 4 for that. He is amazing and gives incredible feedback.
Overall, he was a pretty awesome teacher. He's super nice goes out of his way to help. To pass his class all you need to do is read his stuff! No matter how much you hate it, READ! And then go to his office hours. If your confused or seriously lost on how to write an essay, he'll practically set it up for you with the ideas that you give him.
Professor Snyder has been my absolute favorite prof @ UCR. He's hilarious in class but we still learn a great deal. He's very open to helping students and I had great time in his class. He made me enjoy english again. Love love loved his class!!!!! =D
ok so snyder is an interesting character. I myself had trouble with him to begin with. we found time to talk it out and i really enjoyed his class. there is a s%$#load of reading and there are pop quizzes on them which are 20% of ur grade. hes a good guy but never seems to have enough time to finish. get help to ace essays and youll do good in clas
He is too funny! Even when class was so early in the morning he had the energy to get us pumped for class. He encourages office hours and its a must if you want an A on your papers. Attendance is required and your grade will drop a letter grade after three absences. Pop quizzes on the reading he gives our so make sure to read!
ok first of all this guy is definitely not easy, but does he provide everything you need to pass the class with an ok grade.
GREAT professor. Really gets the students a better understanding of writing in a way that makes it interesting. He's hilarious too. Overall extremely enjoyable class.
Snyder is definitely a great professor, I learned more in his class than I have in my entire college career. Very funny, and has a natural way of relating to his students. More of a political theory class than English but in a really good way. Course work and readings are actually interesting and you leave the class feeling enlightened:)
Professor is FUNNY ! he is really cool and makes class fun by showing videos, or just talk about himself. He grades hard grammar wise, but his class can be easily passed if taken. GO to his office hours! he helps out with your essays alot!
An interesting person overall, but his teaching style sucks. Only focuses on political stances and does move from there. Texts he has us read were boring and repetitive, I do enjoy reading dystopian stories-but it grew tired. Talked about himself a lot *yawn*, I didn't mind the language. But don't take the class if you don't want to be ripped off.
Snyder was a really good teacher! He understands that high school English sucked and he takes that into consideration. You have to do the reading and there is A LOT. I only got an A on one essay but still ended with a 97% in the class because of the easy quizzes.(If you do the reading)
Professor Snyder is a great professor who really made me enthusiastic about taking English again(which was my least favorite subject) This particular class was a treat and as long as you are a responsible student(going to class, completeing readings) you will thoroughly enjoy the class, as well as take as much information from it!
Great Professor, really learned a lot from him. Make sure you do the readings and you'll be good on the quizzes!
Like an earlier person said he''s all about his political position and not interested in talking about much else besides how capitalism is bad.
I loved this guy, but you GOT TO, show the effort. Go to office hours and he is willing to help you build up your essay, just make sure you know what your doing, go once or twice, but make sure you go. Getting to know him personally and educationally are something worth while, still friends now. Also read the book and you'll be fine for the quiz.
He assigned about 3 books to read and we had pop quizzes about every other day. Extremely hard grader, but gives great feedback prior to turning in your essay during office hours. DON'T SKIP CLASS. Quizzes, attendance, and participation add up. Great professor just hard grader. DOES NOT CURVE GRADES. i passed with at 79.6 . C+ not curved to a B-
I remember walking into his class on the first day without knowing why I got placed into ENGL4. But as the weeks in the quarter went by, I realized I was learning a lot more than I expected. I went to his office hours and that definitely saved my grade- so go to his office hours (he's really friendly and he clarifies what he wants)!
Gives you 2 books to read. Has pop quizzes through the week that are tough. You literally have to remember every line of the book to do well on his quizzes. He writes the quiz as you are taking it and makes up the questions as he reads the book in class, which is mainly why the questions are so tuff. Would not recommend him.
Professor Snyder was definitely the best I've had so far. He's tough on essay grading but he holds so many extra office hours and if you go to them it will really improve your grade. He makes up his quiz questions on the spot so as long as you read the material you'll be golden. He really cares about his students & his emails are the best lmao
His speaks his mind and has no filter, but aside from those traits, GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Seriously, it will save your life and if he tells you to change something do it, and if he hints something, do it. You'll like the results if U do. For me, there were 3 essays and yes, quizzes whenever he feels like it, so do the reading. (It's 20% of ur grade)
Professor Snyder is HILARIOUS. His class was about politics tho, so it was boring if poli sci isn't your thing. YOU HAVE TO READ TO PASS THE QUIZZES, WHICH ARE 20%. I'm an idiot so I didn't read and that took a toll to my grade.. Go to office hours for help with papers! He's approachable and helpful. There is extra credit.
Professor Snyder is the best English Professor that I have ever had. His office hours really help me perfect my essays before they were due, and I never received anything lower than an A as a result. He is hilarious, helpful, and very involved on and off of campus. Do the reading, go to office hours, do the EC, and laugh yourself to a good grade!
Professor Snyder's class was probably the most enjoyable class I had my first year. Class was graded on 4 essays, one of which was just a revision of a previous essay, and a bunch of "pop quizzes." It's a good idea to go to his office hours and get the help you need, he gives a lot of advice during this time and shows different ways of writing.
Professor Snyder loves politics, he would talk about politics with you for half an hour even though you only wanna walk-in for 5 minutes. Reading was really heavy. If you're not planning to spend too much time in this class, you won't pass.
My favorite professor of the quarter. He is so funny, class flies by. There are 4 essays and 2 books to read in the quarter. There are a lot of pop quizzes, but as long as you're reading you'll be fine. He gives great feedback during office hours. If you're putting in the effort you should be fine.
Really great Professor! I'm normally not one to enjoy anything involving an English subject, but this professor really allows you to look forward to class! When grading papers, he is strict but fair; just show that you care to improve and he will work with you. One of the funniest Professors I've had so far. 10/10 I do recommend.
He is such an amazing person and Professor! English is a subject that always stresses me out, but he explains things in a manner that really simplifies concepts. His class is also so fun attend, and he is so hilarious. Time flies by. He is pretty strict in grading essays but if you ask questions, you'll be fine. Also, his emails are the best.
I have never struggled in an english class but this one changed things for me. The quizzes were worth 20 % of our grade which is basically like another essay, these can be super easy points if you read or screw you over completely. It is kind of stupid how pop quizzes can be so detrimental to your grade. I hated english after this.
A bit of a character. Didn't do too well in this class since English is not my forte, but he is a good professor. He does care about his students and writes helpful feedback when your essay is returned. Make sure to keep up with the reading, otherwise you'll fall behind in class when you're discussing things in groups.
So heres the breakdown, He quizzes on the reading so just make sure to keep up and the quizzes are easy. He is a tough grader but he gives really REALLY helpful feedback and you can redo an essay. Quite the character, made me actually wanna go to class, and I dont even like English lol. Take him if you wanna have a class thats entertaining.
Seriously do not take him! He is really annoying! Graded really hard on all the essays and did not give any extra credit idk why the rest of these say he gave ec.
I felt as if this was another poli sci class. All he talked about was how capitalism was bad, and why we should vote for Bernie. We hardly ever dove into class material. He seems to have a pretty big ego as he talks about himself a lot. This also translates into his grading. He grades ridiculously hard for no reason.
Do not recommend taking this course. I genuinely learned nothing, we had 3 or 4 main essays and I received feedback way later on so I could not tell if I was getting better or not. and couldn't apply the feedback on future essays. Overall, the professor is unorganized, just rants every lecture instead of teaching and doesn't care to help you.
I had him for my ENGL4 class. Currently taking him for ENGL1C for the summer. For Engl4, he graded my paper really hard and I felt like I wasn't going to pass. I went to him during office hours and it helped me get Bs on my essay to bring my grade up. Since my first few essays were trash, his feedback helped me with other English classes.
Took during summer. 3 essays, mandatory zoom. Has habit of rambling and goes on tangents. Everything has to relate back to current politics. Try to write an essay that's not doesn't relate the assigned reading to social commentary and you won't get a good grade. Went to office hours to talk about essay and he just wanted to talk about politics.
Dr. Snyder is a VERY hard grader, keep in mind this is just ENGL004 which is one of the lowest levels of English offered on campus. You are graded on 5 papers only so if you mess up once, there goes your chance of getting a good grade. He also is not afraid to show that he is a "hardcore-anarchist" and will consistently show his political views.
Professor is very strict on how HE wants the paper to be and doesn't care how you want to write the essays because HE wants it a certain way. Lectures are short thankfully but sometimes would go off track because of him getting distracted by other things like politics or movies. Make sure to do the readings and attend class regularly.
The essays (which are the main part of the grade) are so heavily graded. Coming into this class straight out of high school was really challenging, even the professor pointed out the fact that our writing was heavily influenced by high school teachers, which he pointed out was the wrong way of doing his essays. Very amusing and sometimes fun class.
This English class was focused on money in politics so if you are into politics this is definitely a class for you. Class is based on the 3 essays and discussions and has a lot of reading, but if you keep up, it isn't too bad. The professor is very passionate, but it simply wasn't the class for me.
all I'm going to say is that he's a total ahole and if you want to pass his class you'll have better chances sending a brain-damaged monkey to space than getting a reasonably good grade in his class. Focuses too much on politics and makes all of his assignments about politics. I don't think I've ever hated a professor this much.
I'd say it's a little hard to get an A on an essay but I don't think he's a very tough grader. My writing is a little bit above average so I thought I was going to get a B in the class but I did better than I thought I would. Attend his office hours! He WILL help you! He gives a detailed outline for all of his essays, follow it and you'll be okay.
He is a tough grader, I don't think anyone in my class was able to receive an A on any essay. However, he does give good feedback and is willing to help you out or answer any questions you may have. He does incorporate humor into his lectures which makes the class a bit more intriguing.
Professor is very considerate and accommodating. There was no midterm or final. He stresses the importance of a strong thesis, so we do a lot of workshops for that. Go to office hours! He give really good feedback and helps brainstorm ideas. As long as you keep in contact with him, he is accommodating. Highly reccomend!
He is a very hard grader because of the way he wants the essays to look. Take advantage of his office hours if you have the chance because it's really the only way you'll be able to get a decent grade on the essays. At times, he get off topic with his class, so make friends that you can study with and help each other.
He is REALLY tough on essays for a beginner class. Make sure to follow his rubric EXACTLY and to try and include topics that he has talked about. He tends to go off-topic and talks A LOT about how he is a "Socialist Activist," and can make his readings about that
If you are obsessed with talking politics then this is the professor for you. I am the complete opposite and couldn't switch out at the time. He was really rude and I had 2 incidents were we had a disagreement and both times he assumed I was in the wrong with no real reason but was later revealed he was in the wrong. Would not recommend.
He talks way too much and goes on many side tangents that are usually hard to follow. He is very passionate about the subject, however, and is knowledgeable on everything he teaches.
Great teacher! I enjoyed his class and felt everything was pretty straightforward. Just go to office hours and he will basically tell you what he wants. Only thing is do read the books, or at least skim it / look up a summary. Lot of the questions he asks are pretty precise. That and sometimes he rambles but just try and get back on topic (essay)
prof snyder is very dedicated to teaching English and he often derails off of the lecture (but its okay that's not a problem). 3 essays including the final essay and one group essay. he sends out an essay outline that we can follow and is very available with his office hours. definitely one of the better options for 1b
Excellent professor. If you want a realistic professor with a lots of intellect, go for him. I enjoyed his lectures, and has a lot of office hours.
A lot of commitment required toward the course. However, Professor is always there to help.
Easy class
I love this king
Professor Snyder was the best instructor I met during my undergraduate years. His professionalism, rigorous attitude, and sincere care for students made me fall in love with English and, even, the U.S.. For students who need to take ENGL courses to meet the writing skill requirement, I highly recommend you choose Professor Snyder as an instructor!
Has u buy 2 books,3 day work weeks, leaves discussion HW on weekends,Long pop quizzes,&doesnt respond to emails. He gets off track by talking about his political views& brings up his japanese wife a little too much wich makes sum students uncomfortable(take da class ull see wut I mean)Take another teacher, I recommend Richard Hunt.
Very engaging and funny guy!
Hes the kind of professor who is giddy when leftists commit violence and then tries to gaslight you into thinking conservatives & "the rich" are a certain kind of "German political party". He forces politics in class, & you can get a good grade by tickling his "I'm so punx I want to eat the rich even though corporate media agrees with me!" button.
