i hate the idea of a seminar class it was too easy and felt like a waste of time
I had him as a prof 3 years ago and think he is the nicest person and a great teacher! He's organized and marks fairly. I also think he genuinely cares about his students, which is unusual for most profs. Good prof then, and I'm sure he still is today!!
Reminds me of the guy singing "**** seagull" in Beavis and Butthead the movie. Great 1st year seminar teacher.
Seminar sooo EASY, no exams, 2 easy assignments and an paper. Prof clear and has good notes, and is very nice. Can be interesting and boring depending on the topic of the lecture. I do recommend this prof. for a seminar class. EASY CREDIT.
Honours essay is a really difficult project, but he takes you through it step by step. Makes it clear what he wants, marks fairly, and really knows his stuff. With this course, I finally learned how to write properly.
If you call 2 presentations, a big paper, a small paper, and like 5 or 6 assignments easy, I'd hate to see what you think is hard. Clear, good sense of humour, knows what he's talking about. Actually talks with students.
Very helpful and clear. Good notes, easy to follow along. He was definatly more helpful the the T.A's for this particular class.
Matt Sorley was an amazing Prof, he was my inspiration for majoring in psychology. He is so kind, funny, helpful, and just really relaxed. His classes are so interesting! Definitely recommmend
Matt is AWSOME! He is probably the best prof I am ever going to have. I look forward to his lectures every week because they are so educational and entertaining. Great personality too.. really funny and he loves meeting and keeping in touch with his students. I'll miss you Matt!
so helpful and nice
Awesome prof, exam-multiple choice and short answer, only other assignment is a thought paper. explains things really well and gets into his lectures, which are good he's funny and you'll fall in love with him! helpful and will become a good friend and help you out throughout your studies...came out for drink with us after the final awesome guy
Matt is amazing! he's pretty much my hero! his cl****es were great, my far my fav cl**** and prof! he made the lectures were interesting, fun and educational... im definatly taking more of his cl****es!
Matt is an amazing Prof! He relates everything to his life experiences which makes things a lot easier to understand and a lot more interesting. We did many little fun questionnaires. He is halarious, very clear, great personality and very helpful. He is a genuinely a very sweet and nice man. Very cute to :) highly recommended
By far my favourite teacher! Matt is funny and approachable. He makes class so fun and interesting! I got so much out of his classes and hope to have him in the future! Fair marker, great at explaining, entertaining. I looked forward to his class each week. I highly recommend taking at least one of his classes!
Such a genuinely nice guy! He made the few classes we had entertaining. He really cares about your success as a student. He's one of those kind souls; his warmth radiates from him when he talks to you. I definitely recommend taking a class with him!
Great. Very balanced and helpful, although the exam was somewhat ambiguous.
Best class this year.
Best teacher I've had at Carleton so far
awesome prof!! enjoyed his "nerdy" anecdotes. you could tell that he was enthusiastic about the subject which is a great thing to have as a prof and to see as a student.
Favourite prof so far! He is funny, approachable, and incredibly helpful!! He made first year great!!
Sooo funny, very easy to understand, crystal clear. Knows his stuff and very enthusiastic.
He is a great teacher, hes funny incredibly intelligent and shows a great amount of love for teaching. He wants his students to do well, wants them to have fun on their projects, and wants to make psychology a very likeable first year course. Matt has suceeded in doing all of the above, :D
Matt is quite honestly the BEST prof. He loves his subject and is always enthusiastic, which is so rare to see in profs! His class was probably the only class I really looked forward to!
This guy is pretty sweet. He's insanely funny, always has tons of extra office hours for help and tells you pretty much what'll be on the exams. Not to mention I can't actually even picture him in a bad mood.
He's amazing! He relates everything to hilarious examples from his life, and it's just so damn interesting! Kudos to your Tommy Hilfiger wardrobe too ;) HAHA
Awesome Prof. I have him again for psych 1002 and I'm not at all worried about succeeding in his class. :)
Amazing and dedicated prof. He answers questions in lectures as well as during office hours and through emails. He also has wonderful TAs. Assignments relate to course content and the topics are fairly flexible. I will miss his lectures. <3
Honestly the best prof I had all year, he made my first year psychology class extremely interesting and enjoyable. Not to mention he's a genuinely nice and adorable guy as well.
Amazing professor! Seriously so helpful. Provides anecdotes and plenty of examples to illustrate every bit of content covered in class. Classes were actually fun to go to. Tutorials were incredibly easy.
BEST PROF EVER. enough said. take his class if you can. had him for my first year psychology classes (1001,1002) in the majors only class. it was absolutely amazing - he is so passionate about psychology and he really strives to do his best for the students. not to mention hes cute as a button, you'll want to squeeze his cheeks every class:)
This class is amazing and it is all because of Matt. He doesn't make you buy a textbook and he really goes out of his way to help you. He does a lot of in class demonstrations and gives you the option of what kind of assignments you want to complete for the year. There is lots of opportunity for extra marks too! Awesome guy, loved him!
Great Prof! He outlines what he clearly expects. He gives you a choice between two things on the final paper. He is very helpful if you have any question, he responds really quickly to emails. We got to watch TSN highlights at the beginning of every class.
Exceptional. Lectures are engaging and extremely informative. One of the few professors that left a lasting impression on me during my time at Carleton.
Fantastic prof. He truly cares about the students and seems to really want them to succeed. Totally approachable! He does post slides but you really need to be there because he talks a lot! Great class, awesome prof.
BEST PROF. Definitely take his class if you have the chance! He makes his classes interesting and fun. Even his exam had jokes in it. Nicest, most helpful prof you could ask for.
Matt is honestly the best prof I have ever had. His lectures are extremely innovative, interesting and friendly. The atmosphere of his classroom and the way he presents himself to his students is remarkable.. you can tell that he absolutely LOVES what he is doing and is truly passionate about the concepts of psychology. Amazing, amazing prof.
Best professor I had all first year.
Best prof I've ever had.
This man is amazing! Best class I took first year of University. He was so organized, had amazing stories from his own life and overall he wanted to help his students no matter what! I so want him again as a prof.
Excellent prof. Seems like he was born to be a teacher! He's also really open to advising students on educational and career options as well. Taught the subject matter thoroughly and comprehensively. You can tell he truly loves what he does. I'm looking forward to having him again in 3rd year!
Great Teacher! HIghly suggest going to see him if you have questions about material and/ or midterm! I did and found it super helpful!
Greatest man ever!
Amazing prof. Taken his intro course and sport psyc course. Both were amazing. He shows such interest in the content that you get excited about the material as well. Such enthusiasm! Excellent prof, very funny, cannot stress how much everyone should take a class taught by him!
Such a great professor, wow. I received A+ on all my work and even though I didn't meet him, he agreed to be a reference for me for my exchange abroad based on my grades alone. He makes everything easy to understand and is exceptionally nice. Very much recommended.
This guy deserves a trophy. Great, easy going, proff. Slides are clear and to the point. Subjects or definitions that may have some ambiguity in comprehending he makes it easy to understand with his examples. EXAM = 60 percent of slides and 40 percent textbook.
I love Matt! I took placement class with him and even though you have limited in class time, he is an awesome professor and a great guy! He is super clear, tells you exactly what he expects from you and is always willing to help. He also gives excellent feedback on assignments. I wish I could take more classes with him!
Hey is an amazing teacher! I was going to drop his course because i wanted the day off but I kept it because of these reviews... BEST TEACHER EVER. He explains everything so. If you listen and study you can get a high mark. His exams are straight forward and do not try to trick you. 40%-midterm, 45%-final, 15%-tutorial. TAKE HIS CLASS
I found this class interesting but I found his lectures boring and lengthy. I feel he could sum up his lecturers into one hour. I think he is very vague when ask him questions. Also he is a hard marker.
Terrible class and professor. Boring class. Good luck with your decision!
I was disappointed after taking his class. He gave tough exams and he had to curve the marks in order to try to increase the average. I would not recommend his class.
Horrible, Horrible, Horrible prof!!!!!!
If you like old references and a class so dry it makes you thirsty, this is the class for you! However if you want to educated in a topic, this is the wrong place for you. Matt tries to incorporate his personality, fun and jokes into his lectures but he forgets to actually teach as he reads off slides thinking of his next bad joke.
Matt is a fantastic and inspiring prof. He really makes you feel like a person and is more than willing to help. He gives out letters to students that get higher grades which really motivates them to keep trying hard in classes, and he is more than willing to chat about career prospects and other questions students have after class. Great prof!
please just stop teaching at Carleton and go somewhere else
Great guy and a prof who really cares about people. Puts a lot of effort into the course, tries to make it engaging, always available to help. Learned about how to get better in what I do. Probably the most useful class I've ever taken.
Matt is incredibly nice. He also really tries to be enthusiastic for each lecture, which is very much appreciated. I grew up playing soccer and so I was excited to take this class and having Matt is such a bonus. I would take any class of his. He responds to any e-mail the quickest and gives a lot of detail. You can tell he cares. My new favourite.
He is the best prof I have had so far! He is so funny, makes the lectures interesting, and everything he teaches is relevant! Also, I am a student with a disability, and out of the 21 profs that I have had during university, he is the only one to reach out and check in! This was a nice surprise. You can tell he really cares about his students!
He is very sweet, will answer any questions you may have and wants you to succeed.
He's honestly a really great prof. always there when you have questions, there ar three exams not cumulative but that's it, we need the textbook but only need to know the major terms, exams not that difficult if you study well. would def take one of his classes again! I wasn't going to take his class b/c it was a morning class, but hes worth it!!!!
Amazing lectures. Prof. Sorley does a great job making his content interesting, and relatable, to everyone listening. Prof. Sorley - although he's no Malette- is a surprisingly funny guy which adds to the quality of his lectures. Despite living about an hour away, and class being at 8:35am, I always look forward to Psyc1001.
Matt is the best! Hes a super friendly and kind prof so you never feel nervous asking him questions! Holds tons of office hours so hes always available and he genuinely wants you to do good! There was 3 exams each 32% that only covers 2-3 chapters each so it made it less stressful on students! 100% take psych with him if you can!
Matt is a gem. He's the kind of prof who's always smiling and makes an 8:30 am class fly by. It is super obvious that he cares about his students and their success, and is always very accessible outside the class for questions. Only three exams in his psyc1001 class which are fairly easy if you study. 10/10 would recommend
I think Matt was my favourite first-year professor. Clearly cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. Very accessible outside of class and even has extra office hours around the tests. Great professor, so helpful and kind! I wish I could take him for every psych class.
Such an amazing lecturer, he truly cares about his students. He makes lectures fun and enjoyable, it made getting up for 8:35 worth it. If you pay attention you will understand the materials with his examples and jokes. He even gives feedback on how to succeed on the midterms by asking students who received high marks their strategies
Sorley is my favourite prof ever! He is very funny and keeps lectures interesting. There are only three non-cumulative midterms that make up your mark for PSYC 1001 so you must be good at multiple choice. To get an A+ you need to read the textbook (but you can still get a very good mark (80%+) just with the lecture material). Take good notes!
This Prof is a jem. Hands-down my favourite prof in Carleton so far. If you have the opportunity I would highly recommend taking his class. Currently registering for his third-year sports psychology class because I enjoyed his teaching.
He's awesome! Passionate, caring and genuine. Perfect lecture structure to aid understanding. Very organized. Actually quizzes you on things in the reading but not in the lecture. The only reason I gave a 4-star, is, he could be more engaging and interactive.
Despite professor Sorley's effort to make lectures exciting, they can be quite dry due to the material. The textbook is quite dense but you don't need to read every bit of information. The course consisted of 7 assignments and 3 tests overall so pretty light coursework. You can tell prof Sorley really cares about his students!
He is literally my favourite professor I have had. He puts so much time into his lectures and is an amazing teacher! I have had him twice now! SUCH a nice person. He grades fairly and the work load isn't too much either.
He has a great structure, generous with his time, very compassionate and kind and elaborate. I never left his class and felt like I didn't understand. You NEED to read the textbook though, and quiz questions are sorta worded weirdly but you get used to it. Not too much work at all, easy A if you understand the content.
He's a great professor! But make sure to read the textbook because he tests are somewhat confusing.
He responds to emails quickly and really seems to care about his students. His quizzes are long and worth a lot, and you should read the textbook if you want to do well. The lectures are interesting, and its clear that he puts a lot of effort into them. Assignments are pretty easy and quick. Overall a fun class and a great guy!
You can tell he puts a lot of care and effort into his online lectures! They do feel a little long but they're very interesting and well-done. Make sure you take good notes and definitely read the textbook if you want to do well on the quizzes! Overall a really great professor and a great class, I would definitely recommend.
I really like the organization and structure, you can see that he works hard on them. His lectures were entertaining, i loved them and it was easy to recall the content later! He actually cares about his students :) Reading the textbook can boost your grade, you can do ok without it but some content of the quizzes is exclusively taken from there
Sorley is very personable, he is very passionate about what he is teaching, and he likes to reference shows that he likes in his lectures and assignments. He does have a lot of assignments that aren't worth a lot towards the final grade, but they are relatively easy. There were two tests and an exam, all of which were not cumulative and were mc.
Loved him as a prof! His lectures were easy to follow. For PSYC 1001 and 1002 we only had 6 or 7 assignments and 3 quizzes each term. No midterm, no exam, and the quizzes were pretty easy. I talked to him outside of class and he was great, even offered me advice on my future in psychology. He's a great prof, I'd take his class again in a heartbeat
he was such a good prof, he made his lecture videos interesting and fun, you can really tell he cares a lot about his work and students.
Professor Sorley is a great prof. Lectures are a bit lengthy but as long as you listen, take notes, have the textbook, and put in some effort to the assignments, the course is straightforward. He is a nice guy and adds in fun things to lectures. It is clear he puts in a lot of effort into the course.
Hes great and clearly very passionate but lectures are long (theres just so much content and theory) succeeding is all about the notes you take. Powerpoints he handout are incomplete. MUST go to class. Questions based on what he says. Dont ignore the creativity required for the project, annoying but easy points. Quizzes get harder!
An absolute Angel. He is the best prof I have ever had. He's so organized and makes his lectures fun. I recommend him if you want a good fun class.
Super fun and caring professor. Quite a few assignments, but they aren't lengthy and stressful, often taking me 20 minutes to complete. He is very kind and his lectures, while lengthy, are entertaining at the same time!
Great teaching style, I got away with not reading the textbook because he covers basically all the material in the lectures, very engaging lectures and he explains stuff very well, all round seems like a great and kind professor. Definitely hope I get him again as a professor, definitely recommend 10/10.
He was OK.
Professor Sorley was a good professor overall. Assignments were easy. Quizzes a bit frustrating because even after reading the textbook and watching the lectures some questions were impossible to answer. Still a pretty easy class though as long as you put in moderate effort.
Professor Sorley made my first year as a psychology student a challenging, engaging, and rewarding one, despite his courses being delivered online. I appreciated the module assignments, which kept me up to date with the course content and prepared me for tests! Highly recommended by me!
The lectures cover enough material to do the assignments. Assignments are fun and engaging and not too difficult. The tests included some questions based on material that was only covered in the textbook, but still moderate and not hard if you studied. He is an informative and funny professor, cares about students' success and accommodation.
Matt actually tries to get to know his students and makes an effort to talk to them outside of class when he sees them. The assignments help you study for the tests and give you an in depth understanding of the material. The quizzes are based off of lecture and a few key terms from textbook. Overall pretty good professor
Amazing professor & super engaging. Attendance is not mandatory but everyone shows up anyways because he is HIM.
Loved the lectures very interesting attendance was not mandatory but I looked forward to the class
Probably my favourite prof I've had this year. Super sweet and is an amazing person to lean you into university. The PowerPoints are easy to follow and give good descriptions and examples of things. He doesn't cover everything that will be on the test in class so reading the textbook is necessary. Wants you to succeed and cares about students
Such an amazing prof that cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Makes the lessons engaging and gives lots examples and is very detailed whe it comes to answering questions. Gives good, detailed, lectures and tests have both lecture and textbook material. Such a sweet and funny prof, would love to have him again!
Love love love this prof and the course content. He finds a way to make everything engaging and easy to remember. Truly cares about his students, and makes sure they don't have too much on their plate. Class is easy to sit through, assignments are simple, and exams/quizzes (as he likes to call them) are very light as long as you study.
TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I think he is a great professor who doesn't make learning seem like a chore. He makes his lectures engaging, and the work he requires helps you study for his tests. I wouldn't say he is easy or strict, but he is a good middle ground who cares about your success in his class. He also makes corny dad jokes that are amusing haha.
I loved him. He's so kind, and seems genuinely excited and happy to teach, you can tell he wants to be there and wants you to succeed. Three quizzes, 1 (quick and easy) assignment per module. Quizzes do have a few questions that are only from textbook. Very organized, lectures are interesting (doesn't read off slides or book). TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Sadly, I was only able to have him as an online prof. He seems like he really loves the teaching part of being a professor, and I respect that a lot. He really wants you to succeed. I hope I'm able to have him as an in person professor at some point.
He is an amazing teacher, he clearly loves what he does and knows the material. It is very easy to follow the lecture.
He is my fav, he made lectures very entertaining and actually enjoyable!! He made me excited to learn!
Matt is an amazing teacher, and funny. You can tell he actually cares about his class and students, and the course material as well. Lectures aren't mandatory but his slides on Brightspace don't contain everything that appears on the lecture slides.
Super chill and nice guy. Goat prof ngl
Professor Sorley is my GOAT! Super caring guy, deeply cares about his students and is passionate in what he teaches. His lectures are very engaging, he is also has great humour. His assignments are not difficult and neither are exams as long as you prepare well for them and study the textbook. I am looking foward to having him next sem.
Great guy, cares about students, passionate about his job, funny and chill and easy going
Absolutely amazing guy, super passionate about what he does and it shows. I 100% recommend Prof Sorley!
Absolutely amazing prof! He's super sweet, and you can tell he loves his job and psych in general. The lectures are engaging and clear, and he makes silly connections to real life. So excited to have him again next semester!
If you listen to his advice on how to study for the tests then you'll do fine. It's clear he cares about his students and puts thought into how he can help them succeed.
I took psyc 1001 and 1002 with him last year and they were my favourite classes. Amazing prof! Engaging lectures and super understanding when submitting assignments late.
Good prof in general, and definitely one who enjoys teaching. If you are interested in the subject, you should be just fine, otherwise his lectures may be a bit boring. He is good for advising too and friendly towards students. He has happy grandpa vibes but that may just be because of his white hair and older sense of humour
10/10, amazing lectures that are incredibly engaging! Tests are pretty straightforward.
His class is interesting and he makes listening to the long lectures easy. He's a funny guy and he really cares about the stuff he is talking about. I found the 2 assignments to be really easy and fun as long as you follow the instructions. The tests/exam are definitely a little short time-wise so you have to study and really know your stuff.
Sorley is an amazing prof who tries his best to make material fun and engaging for the class, which he does an amazing job at. You can tell he wants his students to succeed. It's sad to see people who don't apply themselves in courses blame professors and give them poor ratings because it's the only way to make them feel better about themselves
Best prof I've had! You can tell Matt really cares about his students. His lectures are engaging, and feel like attending a TED talk because they're so well planned. He often stays long after class to talk to students who have questions. He also makes sure everyone knows exactly what to expect from exams, and gives tips for success that really help
he's simply the goat
Loved his class, he's a great speaker and clearly cares about his students 10/10 would recommend him to anyone, there's no downside to taking his class.
Amazing prof. Just great. Plans everything out accordingly, has each minute accounted for and always stays on track. He makes the content is so interesting and makes lectures interactive. Type of guy meant to teach, truly cares about students. His syllabus and breakdown of quizzes are weighted perfectly. Profs should strive to be him.
Matt is super approachable and delivers lectures in a way that is straightforward and interesting. The lectures parallel the first year psychology textbook, however, he includes demonstrations and personal examples. The quizzes are very content heavy. Module assignments provide other opportunities to demonstrate learning.
Matt is super approachable and delivers lectures in a way that is straightforward and interesting. I thoroughly enjoy Professor Sorley's lectures; he is very engaging, and he makes sure to cover everything thoroughly with the class. He is very organized on Brightspace, making it easy to know what is to be done each week, which is super helpful! He is very nice and his lectures always get a laugh from the students. Absolutely love him as a prof.
Literally the goat. His lectures are so enjoyable and the way he teaches material by adding stories of his own makes it easy to remember for tests. Tests are very fair and fully mc, so no room for subjectivity of prof/ta which I prefer. 1000% recommend him especially as a first year !!
Definitely my favorite professor so far, really engaging lectures, great at explaining concepts. He's always willing to answer questions and is great to talk too during office hours. Great prof, would 100 percent take his class again.
Sorely is the reason I decided to come to Carleton! His lectures are amazing and super interesting!! He loves when the class is involved and is super understanding when it comes to deferring exams. Of course you have to put in the work but if you do you'll do great. Highly suggest, he's my favourite prof and I hope to take his classes again!
He focuses a lot on lecture material than textbook information, AMAZING prof, really cares about student success and is extremely passionate about his career. I wish he taught higher level PSYC classes. There are 3 tests (incl final) worth 35%, then module assignments (only counts 2 highest grades). All tests are multiple choice.
He made class interesting and fun to be in
I literally have nothing bad to say about Professor Sorely. He's hilarious, super friendly, and his lectures are always entertaining and easy to follow. You can tell he genuinely wants his students to succeed, not just in this course but in university overall. He's also super approachable and easy to talk to. Best psych prof ever
I love this prof with my whole heart, he's straight out of a Disney movie. His lectures are engaging and fun, I've never found myself dozing off because I'm never bored in that. He clearly loves his job and the material, the exams are challenging but not impossible, and his lecture slides are clear and easy to follow. 10/10 would recommend!
He is an exceptional instructor who makes everything incredibly clear and engaging. He is hilarious, friendly, and genuinely cares about his students' success, both in this course and throughout university. His lectures are fun and easy to follow and his slides are clear. Truly one of the best psych professors I've had—10/10 would recommend!!
You can tell he really enjoys what he teaches, which makes the class lectures very engaging and interesting! He has a good sense of humour which adds entertainment to this course.
Great professor! Lectures are really engaging. If you have the option to take his class, take it!
Matt is a great professor; lectures are engaging, interesting and well-organized. He is available after class to ask questions, and usually gives good feedback on assignments. Exams focus on mostly lecture material, but still includes textbook material. Awesome course overall, if you have the opportunity, highly recommend taking one of his classes!
absolute g, love this dawg.
Amazing and passionate prof!! Lecture information is presented clearly and is super easy to understand. As long as you attend, and I encourage you do, you'll do well in the class. The tests are not challenging if you review, and he is super willing to help if you go to office hours or have a question after class
clear and easy lectures, funny lecture related stories, tests are reflective of both in class lectures and textbook material, textbook is easy to locate and readily availble
super friendly and gives great lectures, make sure you read the textbook!
matt's lectures were engaging and clear. he has funny lecture-related stories that really help you remember and understand concepts. read the textbook!! exams are based on lecture and textbook material, and content is extremely fair! stay on top of your work, try your best, and matt's teaching style will get you a good grade:)
Matt is the Santa of psych, spreading psych magic wherever he goes. He's funny, kind, and super fair, with 3 exams and top 4 of 6 assignments. Go to class, read the textbook, and you'll do well. Just beware of varied marking and super slow grading depending on the TA. Overall, do yourself a favour and take psych with Santa. You won't regret it.
Show up to all your lectures, keep up with the textbook and you're good. He's funny!
