This professor is a very good teacher. Attendance is mandatory but it is not a hard course and he makes it fun. He is an easy grader and there are assignments and pop quizzes but they're not difficult. I would definitely take this course again
He can be funny, he can also get pretty boring. The mandatory attendance isn't fun especially because it is a lecture hall of 200+. Pretty easy to do well if you put in a little effort and go to class.
Professor Sprong, is inspirational and you really get hands on experience with real life situations. He offers extra credit and is helpful and resourceful. I really enjoyed taking his class. I learned a lot, I feel very confident while speaking to someone with a disability. I guess now I know how to address the situation well. Thank you!
Great professor. Go in with a complete different mindset on disabilities, and came out with an open mind.
best Teacher NA
His lectures are fun considering there is about 230+ in class. He inspires you in his lectures which include watching awesome videos, motivational speakers, and powerful power points that impact you on disability. For his assignments, he has you do fun activities and as long as you show up to class& turn in on time, you will get an A!
Pr. Sprong makes lectures interesting and interactive. They're very discussion based and he's very good at reaching out to everyone.
Professor Sprong is a great teacher! He is one that you can tell enjoys what they do. He is very inspirational and easy going. He cares about his students and their well being and most teachers don't!! I would definitely take this class again or any other class Sprong teaches.
Read textbook for test and youll do great on tests, activities are fun and easy, lectures are not boring, interesting guest speakers. really recommend taking professor sprong!
Professor Sprong is such a sweet and dedicated teacher! He truly cares about all of the students in his class succeeding. There are a bunch of homework assignments and quizzes but they're so easy- more like critical thinking and "what would you do in this situation" type stuff. If you attend, you'll pass no prob. Keeps track of attendance.
Interesting information and lots of guest speakers.
He is super easy-going. Any question you may have, he will answer it. I really enjoyed his class, and I would take it again.
I really liked his class, and it was super easy to reach him. I'd recommend him, and the class (Disability in Society), even if it doesn't directly relate to your major
Great professor gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Easy A
Sprong's lectures are a lot more laid back than I thought they would be going into the class. I was surprised by how many guest lectures that were scheduled. I was also surprised by how much class discussion there was in the large lecture.
Great Professor, is very passionate about awareness and understanding about disabilities in society and will make you think about the world we live in.
You will not regret taking this class. It's not an easy A, but its not impossible to get a good grade either. He really wants you to experience the class rather than have boring lectures. Just do the work and actually study for the exams, and it will be a great experience for you.
Great class, teacher really cares about the content. He's super funny and he likes to spark debates in class.
He's He's really understanding and laid back, just not when it comes to attendence. You have to have legitimate reason. He gives out so much extra credit its unreal, and he's fun to listen to!
Best professor I've ever had.
Awesome class. Awesome professor.
He is honestly my favorite teacher. What he talks about is a very interesting subject and he makes in interesting and less awkward than you think. He is very tough, he expects a lot from the class because he knows they can do well. It is also a serious class and he expects you to pay attention.
A class to really get you thinking. Highly recommend to everyone.
Dr. Sprong is my favorite teacher!!!
I honestly enjoyed his class. The lectures and guest speakers make you think out of your comfort zone.
Cares about what he teaches and for the students.
Makes attendance mandatory, but you won't want to miss class! Sprong is great, he gives tons of extra credit, is really chill and really loves teaching. This class will change your view and it is so worth taking!
This class was definitely my favorite this semester! It's one of the only ones I enjoyed attending. Once you leave this class you'll have a different perspective on disabilities and Dr. Sprong will make sure of that! The projects/ papers were pretty easy and got you thinking. I would take another class with Dr. Sprong if I could :)
Genuinely cares about his students and what he teaches. Amazing teacher and very laid back
Make sure you show up to class. He's a very chill, cool, inspiring teacher. He cares what the students thinks. Get involved!
He's a great teacher and all of the lectures are fun and informational. He gives TONS of extra credit so their's no way you shouldn't pass. Lots a guess speakers so always come to class!
AHRS 200 is a good class to take, you learn a lot and what is great about it is there are a lot of guest speakers that you can also learn from. Class is mandatory, if you don't attend you get a letter grade drop, so if you have an A, it goes down to a B. There is honestly no way of failing it, he gives tons of extra credit opportunities.
Sprong is an amazing professor! Taking Disabilities in Society has genuinely changed my life. There is a lot of work involved in his class, but his syllabus is very organized. The only reason you should not get an 'A' is, you did not show up, or you procrastinated heavily.
Professor Sprong is the best of the best! If you've never liked a prof before you'll love him. This class also is awesome and I would definitely take it again. This class really makes you aware and care more about people with disability even people without a disability. You really learn a lot in this class not only about the topic but also life.
Professor Sprong is one of a kind! Honestly, never learned a curriculum so easily before. His lectures were based straight from the book, any tests questions were easy to study and find. He brings in a lot of presenters which are all interesting! You will not regret taking this course! You have to show up to class, but you'll want to go anyways.
He' a really good professor, He cares about his students.. You would love this class if you take it with him.
He is a great teacher! Show up and just be prepared to work and listen, as well as participate
This was an awesome course that I would definitely recommend to everyone! While mandatory to attend every class, Professor Sprong made class fun to go to. He had many guest speakers that were extremely good and didnt make you feel like you were being lectured at the whole time. Assignments were easy as long as you made a solid attempt, you got an A
Hes a great teacher
Actually makes you think in class and really change your perspective on disabilities and just prejudices in general.
Great dude
Great guy
Very fun and interesting class. LOTS of extra credit given out. If you put in the effort youre guaranteed an A!
He was the best
This class is great and very informational. Get ready to discuss sensitive topics and learn about the reality of disabilities. You must show up to class, there will be multiple opportunities for extra credit so as long as you show up and do the assignments you will get an A. Sprong is the coolest professor at NIU!
The Best Professor I have ever had!! 10/10 Lots of extra credit
Sprong is a really great professor and he gives tons of extra credit. Attendance is mandatory. The classes are fun and there are a lot of interesting guest speakers. The exams are the most difficult thing in this class, and you only need your textbook for the exams. He's also a red hot chili pepper.
Honestly the easiest A I have ever gotten throughout in college. It is really hard to fail this class. You have to attend classes, he does take attendance everyday and scores off of that, it's a big part of your grade! But other than that he hands out a lot of extra credit points. He is also a very fair grader. Take his class, it'll make your life!
Eye-opening class! A lot of extra credit points that are easy to earn! The exams take a long ass time to do so make sure you can start it at least a week before due date. All test and quizzes are take home! No final either!
Sprong is a great teacher but you have to work for your grade. this class is not a blow off. if you miss more than one class you fail the semester. All exams are take home but are very long and essay format. do all of the extra credit to guarantee an A. Great speakers and great insight but be ready to work. no final.
As long as you show up to class, you'll receive an A. Always has guest speakers. Assignments are easy and fun.
AHRS 200 was areal eye-opener. My views on life and society has changed so much because of this class. Sprong is the best professor I've ever had. With the few lectures he does, the many guest speakers he has, and the assignments will inspire you to be inclusive. Also, show up to class, do take-home exams + extra credit and there's your A+++!!
Professor Sprong is one of the best teachers you can get at NIU. Hes very helpful and understanding and knows what youre going through. His classes are mandatory but theyre always filled with something very interesting so its worth going to them. A lot of guest speakers that you help understand the material more. 11/10 would recommend.
Prof. Sprong is great! As long as you come to class and put in the work, you'll get an easy A. If I could have this professor again for another class, I would!!
Sprong is a great professor and he gives tons of extra credit. The class are fun and there are a lot of interesting guest speakers. If you miss more than one class, you fail the semester. Any tests questions were easy to study and find the book. You will not regret taking this course!
Great class! A lot of guest speaker, but they are all amazing and it was cool to here their stories. As long as you show up to class and do the work, you should easily get an A. He gives out tons of extra credit, so even if you don't do well on assignments, you have extra credit to help your grade.
Professor Sprong helps you, very literally, become a better human being. Through the material he teaches in AHRS 200 and the multitude of ways he engages his students, Professor Sprong activates your interest and critical thinking. You leave his class so much more aware and educated.
Professor Sprong is an awesome teacher! He is really nice, funny, and very passionate about his work! You learn a lot and he is there if you have any questions or concerns about the class or assignments. Attendance is required and it will affect your grade if you do not attend, but the classes are fun and again you learn a lot!
He manages to be a super chill professor while still teaching a lot of material. He gives almost as much extra credit as there are points in the class which is great. Attendance is mandatory, you can only miss one class unexcused, after that he takes a letter grade off your final grade. There's also a ton of guest speakers which makes it interestin
Professor Sprong is an amazing professor! EXTRA CREDIT IS ALWAYS PROVIDED!! ATTENDANCE IS A MUST !! I REPEAT DO NOT SKIP EVEN 1 CLASS!!! Lectures are amazing and present day relateable. you will gain if you do not already have the up most respect for those with disabilities. i love this class !!!
Dr. Sprong is a fantastic professor, the class discussion is never dull, and you learn so much about disability awareness as well as diversity. Interesting class, but show up for all lectures. If you do that you will get an easy "A."
I love Professor Sprong and the class I took with him! The class was very laid back and had a lot of guest speakers. Lecture days are fun and are best when people in the class participate! Professor Sprong is very chill and understanding teacher. I would love to take another class with him and would highly recommend Mr. Sprong and his classes!
Sprong is a amazing teacher, make sure you show up and you will easily pass, class is pretty interesting and he gives soooooo much extra credit
Profess Sprong is a great Professor! Hes accessible outside of class & the experience i had in his class was not only fun, but you will learn a lot of material leaving this class with a different mindset of people with disabilities.
Awesome professor who is willing to work with you to be able to get you the best grade you can get!
Great professor who provides a lot of hand-on and real world experience. Class is mainly guest speakers, the exams are textbook and lecture heavy and are take home. Super funny guy who makes the class really interesting. Would definitely recommend taking this course regardless of your major.
There are a lot of cool guest speakers and attendance is for a grade.
Very fun and educational class and really enjoyed the guest speakers and lectures that we had. No complaints at all and would take the class again if I could.
By far my favorite teacher
literally one of the best professors I have ever had at NIU! Makes class interesting and fun. Gives SO much extra credit and is really easy to talk to! Really recommend Professor Sprong!
Lectures and guest speakers are literally life changing. I never felt respected as someone with a disability on this campus until I took this class. Lectures are mandatory, but you don't want to miss. Instead of exams and quizzes the class is structured around writing (your exams are papers) and this really helps you learn. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Sprong is hilarious and an easy professor. All the exams and quizzes are take home and extremely easy if you read the lectures and articles he posts online. He offered about 200 points of extra credit, and attendance is mandatory (letter grade dropped for every absence). Other than that the class was probably the easiest I've ever had.
Some parts of the class are things I thought everyone knew/thought but apparently not. He gives lots of extra credit. There are a lot of guest speakers.
Awesome Teacher! I Recommend Taking This Class, Very Interesting.
There is a lot of grading to be done as a TA. Sprong is an amazing professor to work under though. As long as you show up and put in work you are guaranteed to get an A.
Easy class as long as you show up and pay attention. A lot of cool guest speakers make the class worth it.
Dr Sprong makes class interesting by having a mix of guest speakers, movies, lectures, and class discussions. He gives a good amount of time to finish assignments. His quizzes and exams are take home and although they require time, they aren't too bad.
This class was very good for learning new things about disabilities that I didn't know before.
There are a lot of projects in the class but they are all relatively easy. You have one free class to miss, after that he drops a letter grade. The guest speakers are amazing. Prof. Sprong is very chill and hilarious though so he makes class interesting.
Very good teacher and would highly recommend taking this class with him. He gives you a whole new perspective on people with disabilities and shares personal experiences with you as well. You really feel like you are a big family as a class and his lectures are always fun and easy to follow. It is mandatory that you attend lecture though.
Great professor, likes to add humor in the classroom. He brought in a lot of great guest speakers as well.
A lot of pointless assignments but interesting discussions and awesome guest speakers.
Pretty funny and doesn't take the class too seriously. Half of the assignments end up being extra credit.
this is my second time taking this professor and i really enjoy his classes. for the most part they are easy, you just need to follow along and read the material he gives you. there aren't many things graded in this class so you need to do well on the quizzes and case studies, but they are easy if you use the power points and book to help.
We had amazing guest speakers and he included everyone in every lecture we had. This class was a safe space where everyone and anyone could speak their opinion.
Great class
Dr. Sprong is a great teacher he is funny and makes class interesting. If you show up and do the work you will receive an A
He is a great teacher who is always ready to help his students. He provides us with many resources and is an overall great guy!
Very nice guy who makes it an easy A and always is available for whatever reason need be.
Sprong was a great teacher. Awesome guest speakers as well.
Professor Sprong is probably one of best professors I've had here at NIU. He jokes in class, and gives plenty of feedback. Best class! I defiantly recommend him, and the class is very interesting.
Professor Sprongs class was probably one of the best classes i took this semester. Def would take it again. Make class interesting, guest speakers were great, made me want to come to class. Great teacher! Def take his class.
Great teacher and great class
he's legit the goat for change on campus. #Active
He's a good professor, he was a bit unorganized this semester grading wise but it was a great class non the less.
Great class that had plenty of eye openers. Great instructor
Lectures are interesting, everything explained well, and lots of intriguing guest speakers!
You must show up to every class and sign in or you can't pass. Do the work and you'll get full credit. All 3 tests were tedious but they are all take home tests. a couple classes were cancelled to "work" on assignments and tests. The class consisted of a few lectures but mostly interesting guest speakers. The textbook will help a littl for the test
Loves class discussions
As long as you show up to class and complete the assignments, its an easy A
Gives extra credit well, very interactive with students, and lectures are not boring
Great guest speakers give outstanding insight on disabilty.
Lots of extra credit opportunities! Show up to class.
A really easy class. Show up to class and turn in assignments (online) and you should easily pass. He gives lots of extra credit. He is understanding and caring. There are a lot of guest speakers who are all amazing as well as the videos and movies shown. Highly recommend this class and this professor
Great Lectures! Awesome Guest Speakers!
I appreciate all of the work he has put into finding guest speakers, offering everyone a chance at bringing their grade up, and how down-to-Earth he is as an individual. I have so much respect for Professor Sprong and would recommend this class to any and everyone.
Sprong is a great professor. He designed his class so it is easy to pass, but there are still a lot of assignments. The assignments are not hard and they get you thinking about the topic at hand. Would take his classes in the future!
Sprong will always and forever be my favorite professor. He is encouraging and so insightful. If you ever want to learn and enjoy the class I highly recommend taking his classes in person. You won't regret it and you will definitely learn more than you expected !! (Buy the book you will need it for case studies and your papers/ quizzes)
He the goat
By taking this class it reallt has changed my outlook in society and disability. I've gained great knowledge
You'll regret not taking this class with Dr. Sprong. It's possibly the best class I've ever taken in college. He's a great guy & genuinely wants you to get something from his class. I think it's important to take this. Note to any Special Ed majors at NIU: this class isn't required, but you're making a mistake if you don't take this. Take it.
If you skip you will not pass the class. you will lose a letter grade if each class missed. He give out a ton of extra credit. I recommend people his class because it a easy class and you will learn a lot of valuable lesson about disability.
great teacher, very flexible. love guest speakers
This is not a blow off class. You have to show up on time and do the assignments.
Very caring and understanding. Had issues getting to class due to an injury for a while and than had some family issues later on. Completely understanding and worked with me to get assignments taken care of
Have to attend class to get participation points but class is actually interesting. He is very funny and gives LOTS of extra credit. One of my favorite teachers at NIU! 10/10 would recommend!
The class was extremely easy as long as you show up. He makes it near impossible to not get an A as long as you come to every class. Attendance is strict but it makes sense because most of the class is guest speakers. It is interesting and I definitely recommend taking it.
Professor Sprong was great! Not only was the material very interesting, but he made everything very clear. At the end, of the semester he gave so much extra credit it was unbelievable. He hands it to you; to fail the class, you literally have to completely refuse to do anything.
Not only was the material AMAZINGLY INTERESTING, but he was a great and caring professor. At the end of the semester, he gave so much extra credit it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to fail.
Professor Sprong is a great teacher. He provides students with relatable, easy to digest information and if you put forth effort, you will receive an A no question. Professor Sprong always shows a passion for his job and is always willing to help students when they need it. He also provides plenty of opportunities for extra credit to help you out.
Amazing professor, show up to class and you'll be fine. Must go to class though, gives A TON of extra credit. Very easy to approach as well.
Easiest class you can ever take if you put the work in. Show up to class, and you will get an A. This class is interesting, and fun. There's a lot of interesting guest speakers. The professor gives a to of extra credit.
I took Sprong's class solely off of his reviews on RMP and it was honestly one of the best experiences I've had at NIU. He really cares about what he is teaching and is knowledgable on the subject which makes it meaningful and informative. If you go to class and pay attention it will not only be an easy A but will be a great experience! Must take!
Best professor ever, easy A, just do the assignments that are not time consuming and come to class. Lectures are never boring and I haven't fallen asleep once.
Can really teach his class
Matthew sprong is the very best
Tons of credit credit given. All of the quizzes are super simple. Must use the book for all of the exams.
lot of guest speakers
always has guest speakers
Lots of assignments to do outside of class but they are easy assignments
Great teacher
Make sure to attend all of Dr. Sprongs lectures because he counts it towards your grade. There are 3 take home exams, 5-10 quizzes, homework assignments, and lots of extra credit. AHRS200 is an easy A+ class; if you do all assignments and attend all classes. If you have questions, dont be afraid to email and will email you back within hours.
In AHRS 200, I learned so much in just one semester. The class has a lot of guest speakers but they are never boring and you learn a lot. Mr. Sprong is a great person who really cares about his students and their success.
This class is an easy A course all you have to do is show up and put some effort into the assignments. The actual work itself is not difficult at all and most of the time you will have guest speakers, s it's really about showing and listening to guest presenters. The class overall is super easy and the professor makes the course entertaining.
Dr. Sprong was great! He always led interesting and engaging lectures and had many interesting guest speakers throughout the semester.
Great professor; many guest speakers.
Many guest speakers & I learned a lot from this course.
I only used the books for the exams. He will cancel a lot of the homework assignments and give lots of extra credit. He seems strict at first but he is actually very cool and funny. He will bring up topics to make people argue on purpose and it is funny. I would recommend this class!
Great professor and very clear with grading.
An easy A as long as you show up to class and do all of your assignments!
You have to show up, but lectures are always interesting, so I always wanted to go to class. There are a lot of papers and quizzes, but he does offer a lot of extra credit. You can tell Dr. Sprong loves the material he's teaching, and that alone makes this class awesome.
I took Professor Sprong for AHRS 200 and learned a lot in his class. I would rate this class as one of my favorites. Attend class regularly and complete assignments on time you are positive to pass with an A. Professor Sprong is very funny and loves participation. Also, he gives loads of extra credit!
This was a very interesting and inspiring class. There are many great videos and documentaries and speakers that will come to this class. This class is most fun when others participate. I would recommend this class to everyone.
He was an okay professor and the class is really easy.
Amazing guy
This class is very straight forward you put in the effort you will pass the class.
The professor was bad with communication.
Amazing and inspiring professor. Best human at NIU.
This class is a pretty easy class. You must make sure you go to class or he will deduct a letter grade for every unexcused absence at the end of the semester. Other than that he is pretty chill!
He is an inspirational leader who is a proud advocate of blending persons with disabilities into society while discouraging stigmas.
Sprong is a amazing teacher. The lectures are very inserting and the guess speakers are great.
The best of the best. All tests are take home. Gives SO many extra credits. You have so much time to do all assignments, great class discussions, such a hilarious and caring teacher, genuinely wants the best for you and is so compassionate. Attendance is mandatory but you'll wanna go to class anyway bc the class and Mr. Sprong are both awesome
Best professor at NIU!
He's a very easy grader and all the test are take home so you have all your sources right there. It's a very hands on and an easy A. I highly recommend this teacher because you can tell he knows what he is talking about and you can understand what point he is coming across.
Merciful grader as long as he can see that you really tried. Passionate about educating people about disability and disability advocacy. Great class to take if you honestly care about making the world a better place. Be ready for lots of typing, though, along with due dates that are repeatedly extended to help everyone out with all the typing.
Great professor, always has interesting lectures
Dr. Sprong is an amazing professor who definitely cares about the content that he is teaching his students. Attendance is mandatory, but even if it wasn't I would still go because the lectures are always engaging and there has never been a boring class session. This is definitely one of the few courses that has left a lasting impression on me.
The assignments do seem daunting, I mean Essay Exams? But it literally was an Easy A. SHow up, do the assignment and you get the points, and sometimes more! The class really is designed to get you to think about People without disaibilities and how environmental factors really affect them. Would definitely take a class from him in the future!
The class is amazing. I've learned so much
Literally the best dude.
Great professor a real eye opener learned so many things and got my mind thinking about things I have never thought about before
Professor Sprong is an amazing teacher. He is very passionate about the topics he teaches and knows how to have a good class discussion.
Dr. Sprong was able to change the way that I look at society. By conducting the Accessibility Audit, I realized that our society is not designed for individuals with disabilities. While this course may see like a blow off to many student, it was a very important course that I will use for the rest of my career and life. No one can teach it better!
Really awesome teacher! The class is never boring and you learn a lot of things that really make you think about our society! He really cares about his students and is very understanding!
Awesome lecturer and I would take this class again! Change my view on the world!
Dr. Sprong is a super easy grader. If you submit all of the assignments, expect full credit. He is very lenient and offers multiple extra credit opportunities (LIFE SAVER) I only ever used the textbook for the take-home exams. The lectures are discussion oriented. Assignment due dates were at times unclear and overall disorganized. Still an easy A.
There are no professors left who are allies to students with disabilities now that Professor Sprong is gone. He was the only one willing to stand up to the DRC for not giving out reasonable accommodations and for treating students so disrespectfully. Don't attend NIU if you are disabled or deaf/hard of hearing. It is not safe.
