Overall, he's an okay teacher. He gives study guides before the tests that are very very helpful! But the weekly tests were very difficult. He gives a lot of extra credit which makes up for the hard quiz grades. If you actually want to learn Calculus, take him, but you will spend a lot of time at the tutoring center!
Very energetic, can tell he loves what he does! If you are good at math you will breeze through it with an A. Some weekly quizzes were a little tough but he gave plenty of extra credit so do it! Exams were exactly the review sheet with changed numbers. I ended up with a high A in the class. I always enjoyed going to his class and never skipped.
Professor Sutherland is an overall pretty decent teacher. His weekly quizzes are pretty difficult, as he doesn't really indicate what will be on them. however, his exams are not hard as long as you study the review sheets! It was also very nice to have a professor which you can understand what he is saying.
LOVED taking this class! He loves what he's doing, comes to class with a big smile on his face every day, and is a down to earth teacher. Some of his stuff can be challenging, but not difficult. He is always willing to help students! Never had to turn in homework, which was nice! I'd take him again if I could! I recommend him!
Amazing teacher! I had never taken calc in high school and was very worried since I had heard so many things about other professors here, but I was lucky as hell to have sutherland. He explains things so well and is always available to help. Best calc teacher you could take!
I would highly recommend this prof! He's really nice and his tests are easy. As long as you understand the review guide that is. But he doesn't try to trick you on tests. Homework problems are optional, so if you don't plan on doing them, don't buy the book! You'll never use it. He also has weekly quizzes which require you to attend recitation.
Had him last Fall. VERY nice, always staying after. Offers extra credit for attendance.
He was always available for help, and walked you through a problem step by step. We used the book and had to turn in ALL homework that was assigned. Test are based off the review, he offers extra credit all the time. If you do the work, you'll get an A.
Not timely in answering emails and the class is based on an online program. I wouldn't recommend him.
Great guy! Don't buy the book, he'll even tell you that you do not need it. This class is extremely easy but sometimes he can be confusing, since he can be all over the place. But overall willing to help you understand the material the best he can. Exams are really easy, the practice exams are exactly like the actual exam.
Seriously worst professor. Also very rude. Gave us a long very long midterm that no one finished and then got mad because we didn't guess.
He is absolutely horrible. Be prepared to teach yourself everything. He never replies to your emails and rarely is any use in answering questions you have. He shows up late half the time and is very unorganized. He expects you to know everything and gives out quizzes every other day. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!!!
He wasn't the worst professor ive ever had, but he was definitely not the best. He is very unorganized and literally just expects you ot just understand everything and teach yourself. Doesnt give extra credit assignments and gets rude when you dont understand. I would choose another professor if you are given the choice.
I definitely recommend this professor. He knows the material and explains it well. If you have a problem all you have to do is ask, but yes you definitely have to do work and put forth effort.
Good teacher. Will help whenever needed.
Dr. Sutherland is terrible. Does not help students and expects everyone to understand. Also has an attitude that he is the best professor to ever walk into a classroom. His extremely cheap suits look terrible as well. If you don't have to, don't take a class by him.
Awesome Prof. He'll practically bend over backwards to try and help you. All you got to do is ask.
My favorite professor! He literally knows how to explain math problems so anyone understand it. Overall great guy. I hope I can take him for every math class. Don't buy a textbook, will use online book.
If you struggle with math, this is the class to take. Mr. Sutherland puts everything in easy to understand terms, explains things thoroughly, and is pretty funny along the way. It's a flipped-class, meaning you watch lecture videos at home and do homework in class with the instructor's help. Don't try to get away with nonsense though; it won't fly.
I had him for diff. eq. and really enjoyed the class. He moves pretty fast on the board so he can be hard to keep up with. No surprises on tests. He didn't take attendance as part of the grade but passing without attending would be difficult. Bonus: I think he looks like Pitbull (the rapper).
He doesn't explain things well and doesn't give clear ways to solve each problem.
He's seriously the most down to earth professor ever. He cares about his students and he wants to make sure you understand the concept and he'll bend over backwards to try and help you. Great at answering questions. He assigns quizzes every Thursday for recitation, but he tells you exactly what's gonna be on it, so no surprises. Taking him for 1760
Sutherland is easy to understand but he is extremely hard and prides himself upon it. If you miss class you wont pass and there is no extra credit. If you have a strong understanding of calculus you will do well but he is evil and he will tell you he is.
Sutherland was the best math teacher I've ever had! Never understood math until I got to college and took his class. The work can be long and tough at times, but if you come to class and ask questions you'll be fine. He's great with answering questions and really wants to help his students. I would definitely recommend him
Sutherland teaches you really hard material, and then makes the tests really easy. I am continually surprised at how well I do on tests when I was confused in lectures. The TA I had was useless and I only went to recitation on Thursday to take the weekly quiz. I went to office hours for the take home exam and he was more than glad to help me.
Sutherland was an alright teacher I guess. His class was very easy, but I really did not like how he teached. I learned better by using the book. Easy A but long class.
He wasn't very helpful in class and when you asked questions, it felt as if he would look at you like you were an idiot and wouldn't answer it.
I think he did great! Absolutely no complaints. Was very helpful and easy going.
Mr. Sutherland helped me whenever I needed it, any time I asked him a question or just simply didn't understand what he was teaching he would reteach it in a way that I could understand it! Extremely helpful and kind. He is there to help when you need it, but if you skip class, don't expect an A. Taking him again for MATH1330.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! I don't understand why people are saying he's hard, I've never taken calc before and this class was no problem at all. He tells you exactly what's gonna be on the quizzes and exams. And he actually KNOWS HOW TO TEACH! He's an amazing professor! This man deserves an award. If he's an option, TAKE HIM, you'll be happy if you do!
Provides a lot of resources for help, including himself. Is clear in what he expects from tests. Great professor!
He gives students almost all of class to work on homework. Although there is a lot of homework, it's very easy. There are 4 tests during the semester with a final exam. The tests weren't hard and he goes over a majority of the questions. He walks around the room answering any questions someone might have. Overall, and excellent and caring professor
Dude was so funny, kind of quiet and hard to hear sometimes, but this class was pretty easy. Likes to talk to students and has a fun and energetic personality.
He assigns a lot of random group work. I am still in his class, I currently have an A. He will answer questions in class about the homework, which is all done online so do not buy the text book, but I learn a lot more by doing the homework than going to class. It's an easy "A" if that type of learning style works for you. Quizzes every Friday.
DOES NOT TEACH also he voted for Trump. The class is pretty much online you'll learn everything from homework rather than him. Just do the homework and do good on projects.
Three huge group projects, and the students get to choose grades for group members. You'll end up failing. Poor prof...
Very Good Professor! He made me almost like math!
I liked him. I hated the group projects. Majority of grade is based on group projects. Instructor communicated very well. Quick response to emails. If you have a problem with the material, ask him. He will go out of his way to make sure you understand. You get to rate other group members, but if they don't do the work, your grade is still screwed.
He hardly teaches in class. You pretty much learn everything through the online homework assignments, but some do not even explain why you got a problem wrong. He tries to teach us how to use Excel but kind of sucks at it because he goes through it quickly. He is boring but can be funny sometimes.
Tests and quizzes are the biggest parts of your grade. Lectures arent too painful and he usually lets class go early. Easy to talk to guy and willing to help with material until you understand it.
This class was very weird. It was once a week on Friday mornings. We basically just went to go over homework from our math 1200 class. He didn't really explain anything very well and I absolutely dreaded that class. It wasn't that he was a horrible professor the class just did not make sense.
Honestly a real one. Tried his absolute hardest to make sure everyone was doing okay. Very lenient with grading if you actually talk to him. Great guy, cares a lot about his students. He saved my GPA. Sometimes stops class an hour early if no bodys feelin it.
Hes honestly a really good professor, he definitely knows what hes talking about. Kinda quiet but if you get talking to him hes funny and sweet. If youre having trouble with the material just talk to him and hell help you personally. Very wholesome dude. 10/10
Sutherland is a good professor, he knows what he's talking about. But, there is WAY too much work for how low of class this is. 3-5 homework assignments a week, a written assignment every week when there is not a test, you do not so good on one test & good luck to your grade.
I had Matthew Sutherland for both calculus 1 and 2. His class is not the easiest, however he is always willing to meet you and help you out if you are struggling in his class. 10/10 would take him again.
Mr. Sutherland is a solid math professor and it was enjoyable to take his class. Do the homeworks and ask questions. He seems to care about what youre learning but isnt uptight about it.
I absolutely LOVE this professor! I took him for calc 1 and 2 and got an A in both classes. He does seem to give a lot of unnecessary homework that is annoying, but not too difficult. He will practically tell you exactly what will be on the quizzes and exams if you ask! Also let us leave class super early most of the time! 10/10 would recommend!!!!
I took this class online and it was a lot of homework through MyLabs Plus but the Professor wanted you to receive an A and made sure to do whatever possible so you earned it. 10/10
What a peach. I love this professor. This is the first math teacher that I have had at UT that can teach. Defiantly would have him again.
Mr. Sutherland is a very nice guy that is very understanding! However, he may be hard to understand and his way of teaching may not be clear, and leaves students confused. I recommend using khan academy and YouTube videos! Overall, a nice class for first semester freshman.
Prof. Sutherland was fantastic and made it clear that his purpose was to help you understand what he was teaching. He was relatable and absolutely willing to go over things until he was sure we had a full understanding. We had a couple of group projects that it would have been nice to have the option to do solo. Otherwise, the class was great.
Matthew Sutherland is a great professor! He really helped me understand math and the homework was easy. He speaks quietly so he's kind of hard to hear but he really knows the material. It's my own fault I received a B because I was lazy with the worksheets he gave out.
He was tough, and creepy. Lots of online work, however he did help me quite a bit with work
He cares. Plain and simple. He will bend over backwards to help you. He speaks quietly and trembles a little, but he definitely cares. Great guy
Hes hard to understand at times and he teaches at a very fast pace. Also he gives projects and assignments every other week that involve writing or group work which sucks for a math class tbh. If the writing assignments and projects werent a thing in this class then it would be a lot better
I liked him. He was patient, flexible, and never turned down a question. The assignments were pretty normal, and he was always willing to help.
Mr Sutherland is extremely fair. If you come to class each day and pay attention, he will work with you. If you dont, he wont. If you fail his course, you got nobody to blame but yourself.
this class sucks. he gives out so much work and half of it isnt even covered in his lectures. hes also hard to audibly understand
He helped me tremendously throughout the semester. He continously made exceptions for my work schedule. And he was always polite. A little quiet, but if you ask for help, he will be there. Great Prof!
The Aleks program sucksit keeps giving you homework if you screw up, but professor sutherland was pretty good. Nice guy. Understanding. And he sincerely tried to make us understand the material. He gave some extra credit which was nice too.
I have him now for online college algebra. Ive never seen a professor so responsive to emails and so willing to help if you need it. Very respectful to his students. If you have trouble in math, hes your guy.
Doing a great job so far. I have no complaints. He is always clear and patient when answering questions.
I thought mr Sutherland was great. I had him for 1200 and now 1320. If you come to class every day and just do the homework and assignments, you’ll pass. He will definitely help you if you ask him. Very nice guy and pretty flexible with due dates. you can tell he loves to teach.
Matrices are horrible, but that’s not professor Sutherland’s fault. He’s not perfect, but he definitely tries and gets the point across if you just remain patient and listen to him. Ask questions, and he will answer them.
He seemed to really care. I had him online and he always answered questions, and gave a bunch of chances for late work. The course had a lot of assignments, but if you kept up, he didn't grade too hard. Very fair. If you take him for class, just do the work. You won't pass if you procrastinate.
Tries hard, and answers every question thrown at him. I never heard him be rude to anyone. Projects look tough, and there is enough homework to make you busy.
Comes across pretty quiet, but will definitely help you if you take the time to ask questions. So obvious that he cares. Overall, very fair.
"if you have to take this course take it with anybody but him. He picks and chooses what students to help. He tells me to wait until the end for my question but a few minutes later answered another students question right away. You basically have to teach yourself during this course. He is hard to understand voice and writing and is very rude."
He always answered every question I asked, and I asked a lot. Was clear on what was due and when. Offered extra credit and pushed back some due dates. Overall, pretty nice and fair.
Professor Sutherland is remarkably OKAY. He can get really annoying at times but all in all, if you have to take MATH1200 at Toledo, just take Sutherland and swallow your pride, he is leagues better than most the other professors, and he's nice. There is a ridiculous amount of homework in this class, but just stay on top of it and you'll do fine
Professor Sutherland was amazing!! Anytime I emailed him with a question, he responded quickly and always answered questions on the blackboard collaborate as well. My biggest tip is to stay caught up, pay attention in and attend class, and go to the LEC!!! The projects are TOUGH but the LEC made it so much easier!
Such a sweet man. He does have a disability so he may be hard to understand at times, but he is always willing to help. Will always ask for questions/ extra explanations during and after class. Shows respect for all students equally. He is homework heavy but gives an appropriate amount of time to get work done. WOULD RECCOMEND!
Too hard to understand.
So. Much. Homework. Be prepared. Attendance quizzes every class, and is very hard to understand. Exams are extremely hard but only have mid term and final. PROJECTS are worth more than exams so make them a priority!!!
not the best Professor but also not the worst
He takes time to make sure everyone follows him, goes slow as he teaches, and asks if anyone needs clarification every step of the way. He gives plenty of time to do homework in class and if you ask him for help when you don't know how to do something he'll make sure you pass. I usually struggle with math but this class is different.
He was an amazing prof for remote math modeling. I never really attended the online lectures or did the attendance quizzes due to lack of time, but I still got a B+ which I am happy with. He always responds to emails within a few hours which is super convenient. Overall hes a great person.
Prof. Sutherland is a very kind person. He is respectful and makes jokes. He does have Parkinson's, which he is open about at the beginning of the course, so he can be very hard to understand, which is really one of the only complaints about his class. Aleks is where we complete homework, and it is really annoying, but thats at no fault of the prof
The professor was good however he puts everything online and for me I just like that face-to-face interaction he put all the homework assignments online and it was basically like do it yourself and turn it in by the due date. it was sometimes hard to understand him. as well the projects were very hard. I would not take him again but that is just me
He isn't a terrible professor, but honestly I wasn't really excited about learning when I went. He taught pretty well and it might've been my fault taking a class that didn't have a clear structure. If you don't like learning whatever the teacher puts on the board that day and prefer actual lessons, this professor isn't really for you.
Exam reviews were almost exactly like the exams, which helps a ton. So much Aleks homework. Lecture was kind of useless unless you have a specific problem for him to go over. He's a little hard to understand because of his disability, but he's a sweet guy. Gives points on exams for work even if the answers wrong, which helped me a lot.
As long as you show up, pay attention and do your work you will do good in this class.
Professor Sutherland very clearly cares about his students and their success. His lectures make it easy to understand the material and he is very helpful in explaining and answering any questions you have. His homework is a lot and created from the online book but his weekly assignments and lectures are what really help and are appreciated.
I very nearly didn't pass this course, which would have made me ineligible for graduation. He did me a huge favor by allowing me to redo my Aleks and digital homework to improve my grade. I am forever grateful for his understanding. He has Parkinson's and is a bit hard to hear at times, give him grace. He is a very kind and passionate professor.
