know the terms!! It will do wonders for your grades on tests. He hands out practice essay questions. If you know the answers to them all you will do fine. The paper assignment is hard. He is very unclear of what he wants for it.
Traxler is hilarious. He's entaining, he stays right with the book. The lectures are online, so it's not a problem if you miss a lecture (or two). If you study your notes well the midterms are not bad.

His lectures are not too bad. It's not the most interesting, but it won't bore you to death. However, his exams are completely random. It's impossible to know what to study.
Tests are random, don't know exactly how to study. His notes are in a weird format, and not that helpful/clear, so you still need to go to lecture to understand what he's talking about.
He is the worst professor that I have had in my 3 years at Davis. The tests are totally random and the paper is 12 pages of hell. His class is boring and unorganized. Prepare for a lame, overly hard beat class if you decide to take it
I had him last quarter. He tests on concepts, not on who did what. I like that. He has a cooky sense of humor, and an obvious love of psychology. I definitely recommend him.
Hes a good guy overall, but definitely a bit weird. No very weird. Tests are very random. You can not miss lecture, even though they are posted online, in a bad format i may add. Hes not the best but not the worst. He loves what he does if that compensate
i hate him. hes boring. he has stupid assignments that dont relate to psc. whys he need my picture?! stupid 10 points. he likes to talk about **** and he looks like it too.
Totally funny teacher. He was so helpful with the material in class. He was always available to clarify anything I did not understand. But make sure you attend lecture.
I think Dr. Traxler is awesome. But I'm biased because I already think the linguistics is fascinating. His lectures are very straightforward, his lecture style is more serious, but he's a very smart guy that does a lot of research so he knows his subject matter very well. My favorite psych course.
Knows his stuff. Test are very easy. East to get a B but almost impossible to get an A. He has a cirve already built into his class so if you get somethin like 3 87%s then that turns out to be an A. He's funny but his tests don't always reflect what he taught in class read the book
easy class, easy readings, easy tests. lectures are interesting. the prof is funny and seems passionate about the subject. overall, a good teacher.
The class is fun but the reading is just flat out duil. I guess he's a decent lecturer but makes the midterms so freakin long and nitpicks every little detail thing on the midterms. Try to get another professor for PSC 1 because midterms just cover too much material to realistically study for.
Dr. Traxler is wonderful. He is the most efficient and interesting lecturer I've had at Davis. You barely need to read over notes or textbooks if you just pay attention in class. He simplifies complex psychology concepts for you to understand without subtracting from them. He delivers them well because of his quirky sense of humor.
Absolutely terrible. Tests on things he talks about that aren't in the book AND things that are in the book that he doesn't talk about. Basically memorize 200 pages of text in addition to his confusing and vague notes. Oh, and he makes everyone call their moms whenever a phone rings during lecture, how retarded.
BOOOOO!!! makes the subject unpleasant. he is very unapproachable, so dont even try. the TA is amazing though
Wow...PSC 1 isn't supposed to be this hard. Tests are 100 multiple choice questions and pure hell/confusion...probabaly impossible to get an A. I'll be happy to squeeze by with a C. I've heard great things about the other PSC 1 profs- try to get into their classes and avoid Traxler at all costs.
The worst professor I've had at Davis. His teaching is un clear and he bases his really hard mid term questions on the millions of pages of reading you have to do. I studied my butt off (making 3/5 cards, typing the notes up, taking notes on the reading) just to get an 80%, seriously its impossible to A. He takes your picture during the test, weird
He's stubborn and refuses to admit when he's wrong. I found some questions on my mid term that got marked wrong but were actually right and he wouldn't change my grade. I even pointed out where the book said they were right, and he still wouldn't give me the points!
Great teacher, made the subject really interesting. Explains everything very clearly. If you go to lectures and read the book you'll get an A for sure.
just do yourself a favor and take a different teacher for psych 1
DO NOT TAKE PSC 1 WITH TRAXLER! Impossible to get even a B! Take another prof, do yourself a favor. I know people who knew the book front to back and got C's on all of the tests.
seriously... do yourself a favor and dont take this class w/ him as an instructor. he is not approachable, which is weird since he is a psych teacher.
If you go to lecture and do the assigned reading this class will be a breeze! Three midterms and a final, he drops your lowest score so you have more than ample time to do well on the tests. The tests are fair and uncomplicated, and each one is completely multiple choice. Very easy A, not too much work is required to stay on top of the reading
as long as you do the online quizzes from the book, you can get a b.if you do the reading too,you can get an a.lecture is only worth going to if you don't sleep at night--he will put you out within ten minutes.his lectures are disjointed and hard to follow--they're good in reference to the reading...sometimes.
He assigned too much reading, lectures weren't helpful at all & it was hard to study for tests because the way he worded his questions didn't make the answer seem clear. I was really involved in other activities so I didn't have time to do all the reading & therefore didnt get a great grade. You'll get a decent grade if you put in the time to read.
Most of the lectures were very intersting. He follows the book almost exactly. You could probably pass the class by just reading the textbook, but I'm glad I went to lectures too.
This class is super easy. Take the online tests for the book and do the reading = easy A. Lectures are a little boring but he tries to do some interesting things. Overall an okay teacher.
This teacher is a **** first of all. He loves to fail people. His class is impossible. I don't know how you call this class an easy A class. He is not social at all. I tried to talk to him individually and he gave me the cold shoulder. Avoid his class at all costs.
he is horrible and i don't know what these people are lking about. his tests are SOooo hard! and you have to read absolutly everything
This man is a terrible teacher.I took ap in high school and got an a and took his class and got a d. Very biosci oriented. Def not an easy a. He likes to fail people and his lectures are long and monotonous....do not take this class!
This was a horrible class. I changed my major after taking Mr. Traxler. He lectures a lot about psych experiments but it's only about 1% in the midterms. Midterms were ridiculously LONG and HARD even though he takes the 3 highest scores. Final was the hardest because it covers EVERYTHING. IF you dont want to hate psychology take another teacher
Excellent Professor! Intent on connecting the concepts and information to today's life, makes for easier recall. For an "A", master the Gleitman internet activities and do the reading. Summer Session is NO JOKE. 3 multi choice exams, 50 questions each. Each exam covers 10 hours of lecture & 300 pgs of text & 5 experiment credit req. It's doable!
Dr. Traxler's a brilliant guy, with an awesome sense of humor to boot. Unfortunately people don't seem to do too hot in his classes, the reason for which I can see pretty clearly: he lectures in a pretty disorganized way, using jargon from the field that we, his students, may not fully be able to "process" and comprehend quickly enough yet.
I loved this class, prof was really funny. If you are interested in psychology then you will like it. Skimming the book is enough even though he assigns a lot. If you come to all the classes, you will pass the tests. He did go into a lot of biology and such, but he only tests on the very basic concepts of it. Just pay attention and you're golden!
I don't understand how people are calling this an "easy A" class. Do yourself a favor and do not take PSC 1 with Traxler. Tests are ridiculous and unfair, lectures are unhelpful. Terrible testing style. Avoid this prof at all costs. I don't know how he sleeps at night failing so many people- hes the kind of prof that actually wants students to fail
He is a very funny and entertaining professor. There is a lot of info in lectures but if you just take notes and review them before the test you'll be fine. The tests were long, but not hard, just pay attention to HOW he states the questions.
I don't know why anyone would think this class is hard... as long as you go to lecture and skim over the book, it's a breeze! His lectures are also very funny and entertaining... even though he tends to spend alot of time on very simple concepts (it can get a bit annoying)... but other than that, a very good class!!
Okay, I don't get why people thought so horrible of him. Traxler wasn't so bad. Yes, he can be random and repetitive at times but I still found his lectures pretty amusing. His tests aren't too easy but not too hard either. Pay attention during lectures, and just skimming through the text is enough to pass.
He's not a good professor. His tests are COMPLETELY ridiculous because they are so random, and most things he doesn't even go in depth of during class. It's impossible to know what to study for and he really doesn't curve.
He's funny and his lectures are interesting, but his tests are so random! Sometimes he asks the most trivial things. However, the final is optional and the lowest score on one of tests is dropped. Overall, i think this class is an easy B, but you'll have to read the book carefully for an A.
3 midterms, optional final.. lowest score is dropped. He's a pretty funny guy, made lectures interesting.. but sometimes he skipped material so you definitely have to read the book. I ended up with a B. Not so bad, but his tests are, again, kind of random. You should know the case studies and experiments, as well.
You have to be self motivated in this class. Traxler doesn't give any study guides for the test so ANYTHING is game. The tests are also not curved, so make at least 3 of the 4 tests count!
Lectures aren't so helpful. Half the slides are just random pictures that have nothing to do with anything. Talks about many case studies not shown on exams. Overall, read the book and you'll probably pass.
So basically I went to 3-4 lectures. He does a good job of going over the stuff and makes it interesting, but i fall asleep. (my own fault) So instead i just read the book, which is a lot of reading but his test questions are based off the book. If you study off the book you can pass. Slides are kinda useless though, u have to be there.
Well this class was way to tough to be an introductory course. His lectures were pretty interesting but I would not believe everything he said. I found the textbook website to be really helpful. My quizzes jumped a letter. If you use the website and skim through book, you can get a solid B. You cant get anything out of him about what will be on the
Awesome teacher! Very clear and easy to understand. Cracks jokes and makes even boring material interesting. Pay attention in class and you'll pull and A. Highly recommended.
Great teacher, 3 0ut or 4 tests count. Just go to class and you'll do fine. Seriously, just listen to him and you'll definitely DONOT need to read the book. Actually, don't even bother paying the book. Interesting course, but the tests can be tricky, so pay close attention to the questions and answer choices.
take his class. i got 120%. passed 3 tests with a B and still got A+.highly recommend.
Brings his dog to lecture sometimes, she's cute and incredibly well-trained. He's funny, nerdy but engaging.
Clearly knows his stuff. However, he is terrible at conveying his own knowledge in a way for college students to understand. I am a Psych major and do well in all of the classes, I am doing terribly in this class. He can be extremely rude and dismissive (he didn't respond to multiple emails). He wrote the book we use and it is almost unreadable
He's rude and unhelpful. He skips info in the lecture because "That's boring. You can read about it." He wrote the book and it's hard to read because he jumps back and forth. Tests are little details and not concepts. Not worth taking even if you are a PSC major!
I don't know why some people have a problem understanding him, he is very clear and if you ever need more clarity he is always willing to answer questions. During lecture he does skip over some topics and says to read them in the book, but those topics are usually not on the test, and if they are it is one problem. So overall this is an easy class.
He is a funny professor who lectures well. Your grade is based on 3 midterms and a final, but he picks your 3 best scores. Each test is 50 multiple choice questions, but you get 2 hours to do them. Tests are mostly based on the book but can have some things from the lecture. They are not too bad.
This class was challenging at times but only because I did not go to class more than 3 times. The tests can be tricky but he has a HUGE curve at the end of the quarter. Makes a B- and above into an A. Kind of ridiculous. Also, the class is even easier if you have taken a previous LIN class. I recommend it.
Awesome teacher. Lectures were entertaining. Be prepared to read your book a lot. Midterms and final are heavily based on reading. The only thing that stopped me from going to class was the late time, but I would definitely recommend going. Plus he brings his dog.
I thought Dr. Traxler was an amazing professor. Psycholinguistics is probably the most confusing part of psych, and he made it an awesome class. Going to lecture I think is really important, as is the overlap in the book. That being said, I had many friends that bombed his tests. I got an A with almost no effort, but some had trouble.
Professor Traxler was not a bad teacher at all. He is pretty clear during lecture. The material on the test comes from mostly the textbook, and some from lecture.
For what you would think wouldbe an easy general ed class, this class was incredibly hard. I read 3 hours a day for this class and it was still my lowest grade. He is also extremely rude and doesn't respond to emails. The final is repeated questions from old tests though so be sure to get those back from the TA.
This class was a lot harder then what it needed to be. He made everything extremely difficult. He is really rude and inconsiderate , his exams were completely ridiculous and not ideal. His final is suppose to be cumulative but it was all first midterm material which was just bio. he does not teach the class properly and does not care
He is rude to all students and his exams are totally hard....Three of my friends failed in his class and it's almost impossible to get an A or B+..His lecture is so boring and unhelpful because he is not a good professor. Treat your self and never ever take his class..
Great professor. Lectures were clear and actually quite funny sometimes. He is very by the book, so in addition to lecture, be sure to read all of the assigned reading in the textbook.
Traxler's lectures were fun and informative. Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives surprise quizzes often so not showing up can hurt your grade. His tests are fair and generally follow the course material. Overall he's a good professor and I'd gladly take another course of his.
Overall, a really solid professor. His lectures were clear, interesting, and oftentimes fun. He really knows his stuff, just write down what he says. Also, it is important to read or at least skim the assigned chapters, bc sometimes stuff appears on tests that are from the book but not lecture. Also, pop quizzes at the beginning of most lectures.
The midterms were straight from the textbook terms and the in-class lectures (which weren't that dense). There was also no minus grades, therefore you either received a B, B+, A,.. etc. Just make sure you do the online practice quizzes from the textbook (which he provides a link to) and you should be good. He also brought his puppy!
Traxler is straightforward and is able to make lectures interesting. 3 midterms and a final and he'll keep the highest 3 scores out of those. Material comes from both lectures and readings, but the textbook is available online for free. You should go to lectures because he gives pop quizzes. Solid choice, plus he brings his puppy.
I found it very difficult to access Dr. Traxler via email and in person. He seems nice and he tries to bring some humor to a very dry subject which helps a bit, but overall I wouldn't take another class with him again. Tests are straight from lecture slides and the textbook. Study and you'll be fine.
Traxler could have easily turned out two hour lecture into a one hour lecture, he rambles and talks about irrelevant info. His tests are based on examples he gave in lectures so you must beware of them on tests. 3 midterms and an optional final. Takes your 3 best scores plus quizzes twice a week.
I believe he is a good professor. He made lectures interesting and funny. He even brought his dog to lecture to use as an example for one of the lectures. There are weekly quizzes two times a week but they're not hard, just do the reading. He does give readings from textbook to do every week.
Subjects were interesting but lectures could have been shortened because he can go off on a ramble. Important to attend lectures because a lot of examples were from in class. 3 tests and an optional final (drops lowest) however does not provide any study guides or information about the final. Brought his dog once though!
Difficult lecturedifficult exams no study guide just reading book by myself bad professor
Great professor
Easiest class ever. Middle School level. Highly recommend to boost GPA. Lectures can be interesting at times, but common for people to fall asleep. Dr. Traxler gives cool examples in class that aren't in textbook. Test is on textbook reading and lecture, so need to study both.
Professor Traxler is super sweet and his lectures are really interesting, just a little disorganized. All quizzes are based on readings which are easy to understand and you get multiple attempts. Midterms are straightforward and final is optional. He and his TAs have been super helpful and accommodating and this class has been stress-free!
Traxler was a great professor and really supportive during the pandemic. This quarter was a really rough time but he was so so SO caring and great about letting us know that we were cared for and the class was really straightforward. Midterms were easy if you watched the lectures, and the quizzes were simple and gave a lot of leeway for learning!
He is a very kind and caring professor. He provides the link to the textbook which is FREE! Do your weekly quizzes on time which are usually based on lecture/reading, very EASY!! As long as you do the reading and go to lecture you should do fine on the midterms/final. There are 3 midterms and the final is optional!
Professor Traxler is super helpful and always willing to answer questions. His dog, Professor Brown, made some appearances in lecture as well! This class is super easy as long as you pay attention in lecture and do your textbook readings. We had about 1-2 quizzes every week that consisted of 10 questions each and 3 midterms+1 optional final.
Professor Traxler was great! His class is super straightforward and the grading criteria is clear. There were 3 quizzes a week with 3 midterms and an optional final. The quizzes are easy if you do the reading and watch the lecture recordings. The exams were easy and open note. He took the highest 3 exam scores for the final grade.
Professor Traxler is amazing, his lectures are super fun and interesting. Loved the class as it was great as an introductory psychology course. He used a lot of videos and live examples to explain the content which made it easier to understand.
Professor Traxler was the best professor I have taken at UC Davis. He made the study of psychology interesting fun and sparked my passion for psychology. He is hilarious and shows he cares about every student in his class. If you don't take a class with him I fully believe you are missing out.
I was pretty hesitant to take this class based on his overall rating but he was great! His lectures were a bit long but he was a very entertaining professor and midterms were straightforward.
Beat Prof ever
Professor Traxler was the most coolest professor I've ever met. He even brought his dog named, Gunner! !Quizzes were taken over Canvas and make sure to do the reading because Professor Traxler usually pulls some questions from the textbook or lectures for the midterm, as well as the final.
Professor Traxler lectures are really easy to follow and understand. He cares about his students and works with them, to help better understand the course materials. No textbooks required and attendance isn't mandatory. Professor Traxler motivated and inspired me to actually learn, read and study psychology more! Overall a really great guy.
Very straightforward format, recorded lectures, not too much work. Overall I think its a fairly easy GE and the midterms are straightforward, especially if you are slightly interested in psychology. Prof Traxler is also passionate and good at lecturing.
If you do what you're supposed to, this class is an easy A. Great lecturer, doesn't take himself too seriously, laid back, overall a really great guy.
Professor Traxler is an amazing lecturer! His lectures are very straightforward and always adds humor to it. Overall, I enjoyed this course, but the only thing I didn't like was the grading system.
Don't be fooled by all of these reviews by people who got an easy A. It was very difficult for many students to even receive a B because of his grade cutoffs. There was one opportunity to receive an A and that was if you got a 98 on each test. Even with the dropped exam, the final was difficult compared to midterms and it did not help.
This professor will you tead the textbook and take open note quizzes. No notes could be used during the exams. I have no idea how other psych professors allow their students to use cheat sheets on their midterms but not this one. The midterms gets you thinking like a psychologist by giving you scenario questions.
really sweet as a person but I don't really like him as an instructor.
He's a cool and sometimes funny person but lectures are so boring mostly because he talks at 0.25X speed. I stopped going to lecture solely because of that. Tests are based on the textbook which is open-access online. Would only take him if you need the 4-unit GE, there are better GEs/profs out there.
The class is content-heavy, but Prof. Traxler tries his best to cover all of it. Exams cover material learnt in lecture and in the textbook. He tends to ramble during lectures (2 hours), but they are essential to review for exams. Not everything in textbook will be covered in lecture, so you HAVE to review the readings as well.
Really enjoyed this class. Lots of assigned reading but was able to get by with just the lectures and reading the end of chapter summaries. Very engaging lectures filled with fun stories and examples of past research. Highly recommend. Three midterms with an optional final to replace lowest midterm score.
I took Professor Traxler's course last Spring Quarter. Lectures are very long but interesting. Reading is ESSENTIAL in this course. Make sure to do the quizzes on time or you will lose precious points; I scraped by with an A because I got lucky. This class is not difficult on its own but it is a time commitment. Study and you'll be fine.
Took as a GE and was fun. Lots of memorization, but so fun. Also very chill and funny guy!
