Awesome:) Definitely worth attending class. Hard grader, but, come on, it's college.
Best professor at St. Cloud. Only one who knew all our names. Sounds like the last entry just likes to complain. He's always ready to help and offer any advice you need.
Very knowledgeable Professor. Gets to know his students, very helpful. Would recommend. Flexible with pushing a deadline or test date back. The class if challenging but rewarding. [5 tests, 100 points each. Not cumulative. 50 points participation, you can miss 3 days, -5 points each day after that. group project, few presentations]
If you actually read the text, go to class (on time), and take notes, you will do well. If not, then don't complain about your grade.
overall really great teacher, get to know his classes and enjoys what he does his test though will kill you super hard. he also is a really hard grader so be prepared for that.
He was a friendly guy, he made class enjoyable to go to everyday. Madantory attendance, didnt use the book very much if you took notes. Very hard grader, he would say he would want something then he would change his tone. He is a great teacher but his teaching skills need some work as far as sticking to the syllaybus. Good guy, tough class
This professor is really enjoyable and fun to attend. But there is downfalls about him. First, is his grading. He is very hard at grading. My group got an F doing a presentation and his exams are hard. You have to study and study hard. Attendance is mandatory and he actually grades on whoever participates gets points. I had to drop out of his class
Mr. Vorell is a great professor! He makes class very enjoyable and interactive. If you read the book, and go to class you will do great. He has everything set in groups and you test in groups so this makes it a lot easier! :) Take his class over other professors.
He oriented the class to revolve around business, for-profit organizations instead of organizations in general. He also noted that he was not very good at the "day-to-day" aspects of a business. Therefore, I would not recommend him because of his failure to give a well-rounded education regarding the subject matter.
Professor Vorell is a great teacher. In our class, as long as you showed up, did the homework and studied for tests, you were golden. The is a tough grader but if you do the best that you can you'll get a great grade. If you have an opportunity to take a class with him, I would recommend it.
Terrible professor. He has no practcal experience with what he is talking about. The only examples he can come up with is from when he worked at McDonald's. As a communications professor, he should know how to establish his credibility better. He may know a lot of theories, but he sure does not know whether they work or not.
He was a very helpful teacher and smart, but he needs to develop his teaching skills better. His tests were very hard but overall good class.
Best professor I had at SCSU. Really works hard to give us a real world experience.
Vorell is a wonderful teacher. Sometimes his hearing impairment is a minor annoyance, but overall it doesn't affect the class. He is a fair grader and the groups made the tests fairly easy.
Great professor!! Prepare to work, but his class is fun and interesting and you will learn a lot. Tests are tough but he let's you take them in groups. He also gives points for contributing to class discussion
Great professor!! Prepare to work, but his class is fun and interesting and you will learn a lot. Tests are tough but he let's you take them in groups. He also gives points for contributing to class discussion
Good professor overall. He seems to have a hard time thinking of examples to back up his teaching without picking on students in class. He gives out a very in-depth syllabus at the beginning of the class, and then completely ignores it the rest of the semester. You can't rely on anything in the syllabus, so watch out for unexpected grading criteria
I followed the syllabus and all instructions for this class yet he is extremely difficult when it comes to grading. Overall class content isn't so bad but grading comes to an extreme and it is not in the student's favor.
Honors 170 class was awesome! Professor Vorell always kept it interesting. The hour just flew by. Gave us a very extensive syllabus but we did not stick to it. He is hard of hearing so speak up. His grading seemed a little tough. He puts on a nice front but you better do your reading for the test. Usually group tests. That was so helpful!
Professor Vorell is interested in giving real life examples and I appreciate his use of his diverse experiences. He seems to be a great mentor for the traditional student. Adds to learning experience thru use of educational models. He wants to be the best. Downfall - not good for the non tradition. If he likes you, he loves you. If not watch out
Group tests which was great for me because i was in a good group. we did group papers on all but like one paper. what he talked about in class followed the book well. His expectations for speeches were a little high but what ever i passed so yeah
Vorell is hard but he went over things that actually applied to the real world. He actually helped me to get a job. Take him if you have the chance!
Great Teacher! Hard on the Test but gives you real life examples. Easy to attend class.
Right away you are set up into groups. The tests can be taken in groups, or by yourself. But he grades tough either way. Lots of things can go wrong in groups, but he's trying to make a point with it. Doesn't care about you personally. Everything you need to know is in the syllabus. And if you have ??'s go there for answers.
It is a CMST class, so attendance is important. Dr. Vorell is an outstanding teacher. I read his entire book in the first couple weeks by choice, it is worth reading. He is a tough grader, but is really helpful. I was really impressed by him and all that I took away from his course.
He is a tough grader, but he tells what you did wrong and what he is looking for. The tests are difficult, so be prepared, but there are only three tests. The nice thing is the tests are taken in groups that you are put into on the first or second day. There are three speeches and during class it is important that you interact. He is a good teacher
He is a good teacher, but he doesn't have good time management. He saves most of the assignments until later in the year and then dumps them all on you. If you miss 6 classes you are dropped. Won't accept anything turned in online. Only hard copies. There are also 3 speeches and three papers. They each is longer than the last. Also tests are hard.
You will have to work hard for a good grade, but he gives detailed and constructive feedback. The lectures are enjoyable, and he is very good at what he does.
Amazing professor.
This professor is a horrible professor. He does not care about his students at all. He grades extremely harshly for a 100 level class.
Test are very hard and can be taken in groups but that doesnt help if youre not placed into a decent group. He says he grades on how much effort you put into it but i feel as thats just his way to fail you basically
This professor is hard to follow in his lectures, he is all over the place. he saves all assigments for last mintue, gives you a 2 day in advanced warning for huge speaches when his book has a 7 day layout for them, and you cant go by the syllabus schedule because he himself doesnt even follow it.
Great teacher
Hard teacher
Dont take unless you absolutely have to.
The best.
Dr. Vorell is extremely passionate about Communication Studies. He is demanding of his students and is clear of that from day 1 of class. Groups are assigned to work with for the semester. Tests can be taken in groups as well. Bonus points are available every week for group participation. Take advantage of this opportunity, you'll need them!!
Dr. Vorell is a tough grader who sets a high bar for students. He lets you take tests in groups and is flexible with dates for assignments. If you're looking to learn something then he's the professor for you, but if you want a blow off class, then look someplace else.
Best teacher ever.
Went the extra mile to show us how class material applied in the real world.
His lectures are usually entertaining and he is a good person/speaker. However, his class is very difficult. He admits to taking pride in being a hard grader which is a little annoying. A majority of your grade is group assignments which is also annoying, especially when you get stuck with a bunch of "duds". You are stuck with this group all year.
Professor Vorell has high expectations but he always gave extra help for students who asked for it. I would definitely take him again and he actually made me want to pursue a minor in comm studies.
Dr. Vorell really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. One of the best professors I had at Scsu. He does expect a lot from students but this is college and that shouldn't be a surprise. If you show him you're trying he will reward that.
Show up for class, do the weekly participation points for extra credit (this may boost you grade from C to a B). Tests are difficult and he is a hard grader when it comes to papers. Good Luck.
AWFUL
Dr. Vorell is the worst professor, very unorganized, grades extremely too harsh for a 100 level class, needs to get over himself
He's Great!
Dr. Vorell truly cares about his students. He memorized all of our names and interests- which surprised me. This class will be easier for you if you are assigned with good group members. Definitely would take again.
The man cares about students a lot and tries his best to create a welcoming environment. The tests are hard, so don't wait until the last minute! You can redeem with extra credit, however. Also, he is a realistic grader, so be ready to put in real work. Overall the class helped me develop personally and educationally.
Most amazing professor ever!!!
Amazing professor, really cares about his students!
The class setup is very interesting, and keeps me focused throughout class. Lectures are somewhat lengthy, but his involvement and use of examples are helpful and entertaining. The grading criteria for the LinkedIn and Resume is a bit excessive, but it's definitely an enjoyable class. The exams are small-group discussions, which is a relief.
Skips over students, and does not give them a chance to give their answers. He goes off on tangents!
Great prof.
He's ok.
Vorell is a great professor who cares about his students. He can get very nit picky on his grading so it makes it difficult to get an A. The work load is not to bad compared to other classes but there is outside activities you have to do to pass the class. Overall great professor.
Vorell is by far my favorite professor at St. Cloud State University. He truly cares about the success of his students, and goes out of his way to make everyone feel confident and heard. I would look forward to attending his course, as I knew each class would be beneficial, interesting, and even provide some laughter and fun. Highly recommend!
Online videos are precise and entertaining. I would have enjoyed taking this course in a classroom setting. There are a handful of mini assignments but if you do the reading requested its a breeze.
Matthew Vorell Is a great guy and an even better teacher. He makes things very easy to understand, as well as clearly states what is expected of you in his class. 2 oral exams which are done in groups as well as a semester-long group project which is your biggest grade. He wants his students to pass and he will do everything in his power to help.
Dr. Vorell is an amazing person. In his class, you are put into groups that you will do your tests with. There were 3-4 group tests and 2 individual papers you had to complete in the class. He was a great lecturer and had some very interesting stories that helped class go fast. Highly recommend
Dr. Vorell is a great professor. He actually teaches you the content and makes class entertaining. I've had him online before, but it is better to take his classes in person. In person was less work and more fun.
Really easy going professor. Just attend class and do assignments when given. The speeches are the big things to focus on, be sure to speak and practice with your group. Very hard to fail unless you don't try honestly. Somethings you learn are common knowledge and others are interesting/useful tips to know. Not much hw if i remember correctly.
Makes lecture fun. Heavy group work. Almost every assignment is done with your assigned group even tests but you have the option to do it yourself. There is also 2 speeches that might be intimidating at first but he lets you practice and get his help to make your speech better.
Vorell is a nice professor who has a real passion for what he does. He's very nice and wants you to succeed. Very timely in email responses which is a plus for an online class. Do the work for the family tree and should be a breeze. Definitely taking another one of my classes. Great professor!
Dr. Vorell is a great Professor. He has clear expectations, gives great feedback, and makes the class not so intimidating for speech purposes. If you need to take a communications class, I highly recommend Dr. Vorell. Also, participating will help you have a better class experience, so speak up (it is a communications class anyways).
Definitely knows his stuff, but I was given a grade two shades below what I deserved. Don't waste your $$$ to have your grade get nickeled and dimed over a 3 credit course. .. if you're a CS major maybe consider ENGL 332 for your professional communications requirement.
Assignment expectations are never covered in the class, yet not picked heavily. One could complete the assignment but lose significant points over expectations never listed. The subjective-ness in the grading of assignments is very evident; large point totals are subtracted for minor errors. Tests are riddled with grammatical and spelling errors.
As others say his class is extremely subjective. One professor cannot objectively grade resumes, linkedin profiles, interviews, ect. He thinks his opinion is definite. His grading is strict for a communications class and he acts like it is important. Take the writing in the workplace class instead and you will thank yourself later.
Professor Vorell was amazing. He always engaged with the students and put in an effort to make all students engaged and comfortable. When i or others made a comment in class, he showed so much interest in it. I would definitely take a class with him again! The work is not very difficult if you put in effort to listen and there are few assignments.
One of my favorite professors by far. His teaching style is very unique and I find all of his classes fascinating. Very fun gives off a lot of dad energy and dad jokes. He's also a harsh grader, but when I was going through a tough time, I kept in touch with him and he helped me catch up on school work and let me have an extension when needed.
Dr. Vorell is easily one of the best professors I've had at SCSU. Every piece of information is useful and applicable to the business world. If I had to criticize, I'd say he's a tough grader, but I see that as him trying to push the best from his students. Very passionate and down to earth guy, and has some pretty good jokes too.
Loved this course.
Really cared about the students.
Do not take CMST341 online if you have the option! Too much homework from the readings compared to in person. Overall, Dr. Vorell is an awesome professor.
Dr. Vorell is an amazing professor. He gets students engaged with his class and keeps things interesting with variety in his lectures. No death by powerpoint. Some say his grading is strict, but it is crystal clear. He gives advice before projects on how to best prepare, and is always available to ask questions. I highly recommend taking his class.
Dr. Vorell has his online course set up in the most
I took an onl
Tests are often poorly written. Grading criteria is provided but is not clear on what is actually expected. Grades harshly. Attendance is required, though he locks the door and does not allow students to attend class if they are a minute late.
Hey everyone, I'm just reaching out to let you know that Matthew Vorell is an OK professor. He was a super tough grader but acted like my résumé was the biggest deal in the world! There are many options for you if you're unsure about your future, and taking Vorell's class will make you feel like a failure. Is he a nice guy?ABSOLUTELY But be warned
Easiest professor to get along with, extremely understanding and although participation matters and attendance in mandatory, he also understands that life happens. The course had no busy work, only assignment every few weeks and tests. He gives you the rubrics and works on the assignments with you. It is impossible to not do good in this class.
Would 100% take his class again, he is easy to get along with, very easy to understand, and doesn't have 'busy work'. Weekly quizzes and three group oral presentations. Lectures are interactive and participation matters. He has a great sense of humor which makes his lectures feel more like conversations rather than constant reading.
This class wasn't super difficult, but there was a lot of busy work assignments. He gives rubrics but then doesn't grade according to them. The tests are poorly written and very ambiguous. I wouldn't take him again just because his grading and assignment criteria was very frustrating to work with. Overall, nice guy, just very subjective on grading.
