By far the best professor I ever had for math. Gives examples and derives a lot of the techniques. Other profs should follow his method of teaching. He also discusses some of the engineering applications. A must have for anyone in engineering but he will make you work for the grade. Much better than Khan academy....
Very intense class however I have really enjoyed it. Whoever troll gives negative remarks must be delusional or not prepared. This professor explains very well and makes the class interesting. He also posts his notes online which is a godsend. Most of the students like myself are enjoying the course and doing well.
I took his 8 wk class over the summer, BE PREPARED TO WORK A LOT. He's a good professor but this was a difficult class. It being calc2 after all. He's accessible and often very helpful outside of class. I wish I could've taken this class over 16 wks for a chance at a better grade, but he's a good prof and knows his stuff! Would recommend!
I know it's a bit early to rate Mr. Westerhoff but I am already amazed by his teaching. Finally a prof who derives the concepts. He actually tries to relate the material to real world applications. I have high expectations now so let's see what will happen. To be continued............
I had the pleasure of taking his class HONORS Calc 2 class and by far he was the best math professor I ever had. Derives the techniques in class and shows how to apply them to examples. Engages the whole class by putting us in groups and working out challenging problems. He likes to challenge his students and thus the class requires a lot of work.
Gives a ton of hw im talking about 200 problems each week and adds on dont take him no matter what theres so many better options trust me if you take him your in for a ride to fail all his test are word problem questions/ no calculator allowed only thing good he does is allow test corrections but only get half credit back PLEASE dont take his class
This prof is very good and is willing to go out of his way to help. There is a lot of homework but that is expected at college level. He also helps you prepare for calc. If you are looking for an easy grade then this prof is not for you. If you want to get a grade A like me then you have to work for it. In the end you will learn so much and more.
Tends to give out many homework questions from textbook but only grades 10 questions. (Mainly odd ones so you can check the back to see if you got it right). Understands if you miss a day if you email him. Always ready to help in the math center or his office. Prepares you to the next level. Loves math more than Sir Isaac Newton if you ask me.
Precal and calc is supposed to be hard but this class is graded to fail. You will only pass if you already are good at math. Assigns 200+ probs and grades only 10. Exams are only 20 new questions randomnly generated. No extra credit; nothing to help your grade. All determined by a couple of problems. Save your gpa and take anybody else.
This professor is very good at teaching but expects a lot out of you. Of course you are going to need to study and do homework he stresses that in class. It's a college math course what do you expect. It's not high school. duh! If you are not ready for college math take the easy way out. I am doing well in class and learning a lot and beyond.
I am currently taking Mr. Westerhoff's Calc1 honors course and learning so much. Definitely more than I learned in high school. He uses Maple software which is so neat! You have to do your homework to get the most of this course. He gives these enrichment problems which are thought provoking but interesting. Looking forward to his Calc 2 course.
I love this professor. He teaches from his own notes rather than the textbooks. His notes are so detailed and a life saver. It's a difficult class but if you put in the time & effort you will learn a lot. He likes when students think on their own. You can also go to his office to talk about math or whatever is on your mind. Best prof ever.
Definitely recommended for STEM majors. The introduction of Maple was so beautiful, its crucial for future classes and beyond! His lectures are detailed heavy. The class is difficult, can't pass this class on lectures alone. Notes are on BB which better explain the concept better than textbook. He does take a while to grade assignments and tests.
Show up for every class and be sure to look for how he does his practice problems. He expects the homework to reflect the work done in class, and grades the homework to the respectively. 10 problems out of the homework each test are graded. 4 or 5 tests per semester. Lots of effort needs to be put on your part to pass the class. Gives test guides.
If you want to learn how to solve math problems then take Mr. Westerhoff. He will teach you a different way to think. You will learn but you have to take the initiative to do the work. I studied, kept up with the material, asked questions and earned an A. That what it takes and you will learn so much. He is the best! Looking forward to Calculus.
Mr. W was a bit ditzy at times and needed to be corrected occasionally. He was a good professor and gave plenty of examples. The grade comes mostly from the tests, with attendance and hw thrown in there for some booster points. Hw is not graded on completion, but on accuracy-- be careful. Tests are also graded this way with limited points.
Took him for calc2 (5 cred) over summer. Thought a 3 cred linear algebra over 16wk would be easier. NOPE! He thinks everyone loves math and treats this class like it's worth 5 creds. The grading is exam heavy, and the exams are difficult, even if you study. I'm usually a solid A student, but this prof is killing my grades. DON'T TAKE! BE CAREFUL!
The professor is very good but you have to put in the time and effort to study. He is not going to hand-hold you like some other profs. Will teach the material as if it were a "real" college math class. I am definitely learning a lot and look forward to some of the applications. Take him if you want to gain knowledge.
I took calc2 and some other math courses with Mr. Westerhoff a few semesters ago and currently at NYU majoring in EE. Looking back now I'm very appreciative of his teaching. His expectations are much higher than other profs but you will learn a lot more. I worked very hard in his classes but now it's paying off. Thank you professor!
Very hard course its all about how much work you put in to earn a good grade. his lectures are very long and does not provide with study guide for any of the exams. Exams are worth 60 % of your grade. Do not take him if you are not a good math student. Very hard course and you will need to study hard to earn a decent grade.
He was very understanding. Also, he always posted notes online from class with formulas and work-out probs. One caveat is that there is a ton of hard homework and the class exam avg was often low. Calc2 was difficult, but he really challenged his students to learn the material, and I think it's is truly helpful for the future and much appreciated
Prof Westerhoff is an amazing person. However, his lectures are heavy and he gives A TON of hws through WebAssign. His tests are very hard. You really have to work super hard to get at least a C in his class. He lets you do corrections on the test, but gives no extra credit. If you're not a math person, do not take him.
He is a great prof. who makes you earn your grade. If you are looking for an easy professor then look elsewhere. If you are planning to go into STEM then I believe he is the best choice for math. He will teach you the fundamentals and a whole lot more.. He also posts his notes online which is a blessing in itself.
westerhoff was one of the most intellectual professors that I have ever met at NoVA. He was a person that will make you learn the material at a deeper understanding so you can be prepared for the upper level math courses. The only wish I had is that he curved his test scores, which would greatly help peoples grades. Maple software is used in LA
Professor Westerhoff is 100% the smartest professor at NOVA, caring, and hardworking. You need to respect the class fully to perform well. The key is to do all the homework and understand the theory/concepts FULLY. He's a great professor if you're really trying to better yourself.
Westerhoff is a good professor. However, he just teaches hard classes like Calc II which is what I'm taking. He prepares students for tests well but if you don't come to class you will fail. If you want the A, you'll definitely have to do work outside of class, not because he makes the class hard. Just because the classes he teaches are loaded.
Prof Westerhoff has not been helpful at ALL during this COVID-19 situation. It is difficult to learn math when the professor doesn't put in as much effort as needed for a math course. Hopefully, you have a better experience with him in the classroom.
Professor Westerhoff has been very helpful during the COVID-19 situation and good at answering emails on time. During the remote learning he has made very good quality videos for us. They are so good and detailed, even better than Khan academy videos. Calc 2 is hard but that is expected and grades are to be earned. Thank you for everything!
Professor Westerhoff is very caring. His classes are good although he can be a little late to show up to them. The exams and projects, however, are difficult. Homework is pretty easy.
Prof Westerhoff is the best and smartest prof at NOVA. I am definitely going to take Differential equations and Vector Calculus with him. I took the Honor CALC II with Westerhoff this semester during the COVID-19 situation. I have to say his way of teaching is better than Khan Academy and YouTube Videos. Be ready and Take him you wont regret!
A real gem. You could tell he poured his heart out to make tons of example videos and give live lectures for the compressed 6-week summer session. A reasonable workload for the compressed class time. Midterms were open-book because they're at home, but the more highly weighted final was timed, so it was tougher and you needed to know material.
Professor had emailed multiple students personally letting us know we shouldn't be in his class, because our cameras for Zoom are poor quality. Professor doesn't do a good job at explaining anything. He assigns work and doesn't explain how to do anything. I understand teaching over zoom may be difficult, but shouldn't be an excuse for not trying
I disagree with the comment below and there was no such email sent. I took Mr. Westerhoff's MTH 286 course over summer and he did a superb job in teaching the material even though it was offered as an asynchronous course. The videos he provided were excellent and better than what's on YouTube.
My review from the MTH264 summer course. This professor is one of the best I have ever seen. He is not easy but you will learn the material at a deeper level. I am taking MTH265 now and using his techniques which makes calc 3 a lot easier to understand. If you are willing to commit to the work then you will learn a lot. Take him!
I love Westerhoff, his lectures are so good. Sometimes he does go a little fast but it's because there is so much material. I never had a teacher before who derives the techniques like Westerhoff and I am very appreciative of that. The videos he has on his YouTube channel are some of the best out there. I look forward to taking MTH 266 from him.
Takes his time to answer any questions that may arise, will even explain the same concepts multiple times for full comprehension. The course was rushed and he skipped some of the tests and final topics of the course.
His lectures were easy to follow, and he went back over anything people were confused about. His unit exams were fair and graded with partial credit, but the final was much harder and longer than the unit exams. Grading was pretty slow so we waited weeks to get test scores back. Recommended only if you really intend to put in hard work.
I took this professor for calc 1 during the summer, and I didn't learn anything from the class even though I was trying really hard. I decided to give him a second chance and take him again for calc 2 in the fall; with all little did I know that that was the biggest mistake that I've ever made. If you want to learn do not take him.
I learned a lot from this professor. He occasionally held separate zoom sessions for those that requested study sessions. Very clear lessons and his notes are online. He also has awesome math videos of not only easy examples but difficult ones as well. Calculus 2 is difficult but requires mathematical maturity as he likes to say. Overall excellent!
He was really a great teacher during class and always spent time to answer any questions that the class may have. He didnt have set office hours, and while he claimed you could set up a meeting, he never responded to emails. honors course had coding and enrichment as well as a paper but it was fine. very disorganized and the final was insane hard.
This is the second time I am taking Linear Algebra but with Prof W. My previous instructor at the Alex. campus with Mr. K was a disaster. I love how detailed the lectures are and the way he explains the theorems. His YouTube videos are very detailed as well and a godsend. Be wary Linear Algebra isn't for the faint of heart and you will need study.
One of the most empathetic teachers I've ever come across. For some teachers it seems like they could care less what grade their students get, but not Westerhoff. His tests are tough, but the fact that he cares about his students I think really motivates them. A kind soul and a genuine math enthusiast. Wished us a happy E Day on Super Bowl Sunday.
3 though Exams.
Linear algebra is a very conceptual course but Westerhoff made it very interesting. As with any math course you need to do the homework and study. He provided videos for us through his YT channel which were awesome since this was a hybrid course. Typical 3 exams and a final exam but he allows exam corrections. Overall, I enjoyed the course.
Proffessor Westerhoff is hands down the BEST math professor that I have had. His lectures are very helpful and thorough. The class graded based off of 3 exams, a final exam, and a small coding assignment which was easy to do. He let us do corrections on our tests which helped my grade/understanding of the content.
I took him bc of all these good reviews, he might have been a good teacher to others. This was an honors calc 1 course and was nothing like I expected. Im good at math and am currently struggling heavily in this course, we have to write a 5 page essay on calc. Highest grade on the last exam was a 75. He seems annoyed when I ask questions.
DON'T TAKE THE ONLINE 7 WEEK VERSION! by far the worst class I have ever taken. doesnt respond to emails, takes forever to grade. 3 tests worth 60% of your grade- nothing like the hw and EXTREMELY hard. so stubborn with grades as well and grades down to the hundredth point. told us that this class has a 30% passing rate, spare your $ and misery.
He is by far the best math professor I have taken at NOVA. If you really want to learn math, then take him. The HW and test are a little challenging and makes you think. He had 3 test and a final. He drops the lowest grade for the test. He lets you make corrections, but you get half of the lost points back. Responds to email quickly. He is awesome.
I took calculus at TJ high school but needed more of a challenge so I decided to take Prof Westerhoff's honors calc course. I learned more in this class than I did in high school. If you study his techniques and watch his videos you will learn at a higher level. You can't slack off in his class and don't expect an easy A/B. Taking Calc2 with him.
After seeing the good reviews on Professor Westerhoff, I decided to go with his class for my differential equations semester. Best choice I made. My only regret is that I didn't take him for my previous three calculus courses. He is excellent at explaining the concepts and teaching the course material. Take his class for the best shot at passing.
Clearly didn't know what he was talking about when he said that vector spaces is the heart and soul of linear algebra when it's obviously row reduction! Jokes aside he was a great teacher and really cared about the success of his students, and made sure they understood the material; linear algebra was very conceptual.
Professor Westerhoff is THE BEST!!! Wish I could rate him higher, since he is such an amazing Prof!! He shows that he REALLY cares about each and every student through his thoughtful feedback on assignments/exams, and he even puts in the effort to help students outside of his class! The textbooks he uses are FREE!! Overall very generous and mindful
Do NOT take this class online! Professor W. tried his best to help his students but it was such a struggle to get through. I did complain on the discussion board and he told me to suck it up, basically. He was always available and he's trying to improve the class now. Take him in a classroom environment! Linear Algebra is no joke.
this is for mth162 I feel like this professor is good and all but not my style of learning the way he demonstrates it. I also feel like you can't have 1 on 1 with this professor either everyone rely on him or he doesn't really help you through out the way if you don't understand but the problem gets done. I recommend not taking half hybrid.
Professor Westerhoff is great professor, and if you really wants to understand Math take his Math class. Prof. Westerhoff is the only Teacher gives feedback after grading the exams. he is a very knowledgeable about Liner Algebra and very helpful when his students had questions. the amount of assignments was reasonable comparing tootherclasses
Prof. Westerhoff is one of the best professors out there. He is very caring and will help if you asked for it. MTH 267 isn't easy, I would advise not to skip the classes. Drops the lowest test score, and test corrections give half credit back which is nice but no extra credit. Easy A seekers stay away and save yourself the time and money.
Calculus II is hard, but Westerhoff is really good at explaining these difficult topics. He's very understanding about helping you out if you ask for it, and will drop 1 out of the 3 exams before finals and also give you an opportunity to do corrections for half points back on the first 3 exams. Overall, I'd highly recommend this professor!
Best math professor I've had. He teaches math through a very intuitive lens. His lectures are very enjoyable and informative. You can't go wrong with this professor.
3 exams lowest 1 dropped. Exams worth 20% each. Final exam worth 35%. The rest is just misc. Calc II is hard, but a good professor definitely lessens the blow. Highly recommend.
Professor Westerhoff is a great professor; he is helpful outside of class if you have any questions. The class is graded on quizzes, computational assignments, 3 exams, and one final. If you read the textbook, come to class, and do the homework, the class is easy. However, If you don't read or skip doing the homework, you will struggle hard.
Our class was an experimental independent study. It felt disorganized because he kept changing our assignments and schedule throughout the semester. We had one exam in the first two months and three exams in the last three weeks which was stressful and the questions didn't align with the alternative textbook he had us use instead of the regular one
Expect to teach yourself Differential Equations, as there is no lecture. This is just you and a WebAssign textbook. You get about 30 questions per day. The class itself is just plain hard too, so it takes time. He grades hard and is entirely inaccessible in any reasonable time frame; he takes 3-6 days to respond and by then its too late.
If you don't have a well-rounded background in math, don't take the class. His class is very tough. Consists of 4 exams, 1 final exam, a technical paper, and projects that have to do with Maple software. He is caring and respectful but ultimately if you do not have a good background in pre-calculus, you are going to fail the class. Just a warning!
This class prepares you for university maths. My gf goes to mason and this class is harder than her calc 1. However the professor is nice and has a passion for the content. The tests are alright but the final exam is very hard. There is also a final paper that is pretty time consuming using Maple. Overall, he is the goat and you should take him.
I felt confident doing the material for the class. I was a bit nervous for the exams but I managed to pull through. At least, I managed to move up to calculus courses afterward. Highly recommend.
Excellent professor. So thoroughly understands his material, and goes way above and beyond to help his students learn. He has his own youtube channel and notes online! Well organized, intelligent, caring. Prof Westerhoff is a life-changing-tier professor, that can help you discover your love for mathematics.
Take this teacher if you are enrolled in very few, less rigorous courses on the side. This course is very lecture and exam heavy, you will most likely spend an enormous amount of time outside of class practicing and reviewing the material. If you are have a solid background in this specific math course and it comes easy to you--- take it.
I took him because of the good online reviews and I regret it. I think he trying to help. But his teaching style unnecessarily complicated things and left many students feeling confused. There are better professors who teach Calculus at NOVA.
Professor Westerhoff knows what he is talking about. He has two Masters in Math, So there is no question about the quality of his lectures (I don't mean this as hyperbole, but NOVA is lucky to have him) On the downside, his Exams are tough. He wants students to demonstrate what they have actually learned. I wish I could take him for Calculus 2
Only take him if this is the only class you're taking! and if you know calculus I already. He's always telling students that the reason why he grades so harshly is to prepare us for university level because it's more "difficult" which is wrong. His lecture is not helpful at all and there is absolutely 0 extra credit. Good luck!
Class isn't too hard, it's just that other nova classes are so easy. I wish I had taken him for my previous math classes. He explains things so thoroughly. Webassign was harder than the tests, which is good. I expected the worst for the final, but it was very fair and honestly, he gave us a couple of freebies from the last unit and extra credit :p
I wish i took him for precalc classes, super organized in his teaching and willing to help. I would highly recommend you to take him. Hands down one of best instructors at nova. this was a 7wk summer class, which consisted of 4 exams, final, & 2 small projects. Your exam results are your overall grade, good luck!!
He is a good professor if you want to learn. However, if you are taking a major with little math, I do not recommend this professor, the evaluations can affect your score. Do not take this class with him if you have more than 2 courses, he sends a lot of homework. Highlight: A good professor teaches like the traditional school and difficult
Horrible experience with Professor Westerhoff in MTH263. Do not take his class unless you are amazing at math and like extreme challenges. Unnecessarily incorporated coding and 3D printing into a basic math class and gave little to no instruction on these irrelevant assignments. Exams are horrible and do not reflect lectures. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Very moody professor ! based on his mood with grade your exam. He does not have clear criteria. Even after the exam you still do not know what is the answer that will make him happy. Avoid him at all costs.
I took Professor Westerhoff's honors differential equations class and it was the best math class. We did interactive projects with a 3D printer, researched Runge-Kutta and Euler's methods, and applied differential equations to real life. He offers test corrections, the workload isn't crazy, and he's super responsive to emails. The GOAT at NOVA!
Don't take this professor if you are not naturally good at math. He is a very nice person and a math genius but assumes that you know certain things. I think 2 stars is too harsh for him but I would not take him again. If you are thinking of taking him, you should know that there is a lot of hw done on paper that he barely grades. Rest is exams
Professor Westerhoff is an excellent professor and prepares you well for calculus. His clear explanations and support make a big difference. However, do not underestimate the course, if your basic algebra skills foundation is weak, you will need to work hard. Success requires effort, but it's worth it if you dedicate time.
Overall, he's a great professor who explains things thoroughly during lectures. Linear algebra is a conceptual course, so you really need to put in the effort to study. His notes and online videos are super helpful. He might seem a little intimidating at first, but he's actually a really cool guy and tells some good stories outside of class.
Absolutely loved this professor, he was kind, explained things well, and knew what he was doing. However, I would highly recommend not taking this professor unless you have an extremely good understanding of math and a very open schedule. He gives (IMO) an insane amount of homework and tests are very difficult if your just slightly confused
Wow, was this a hard class to get through. Cant tell if it was cuz of the 3 hour block or his extremely boring monotone lecture. It also felt like he really didn't understand the content and dismissed students when they brought up good questions or corrected his work. Pretty abstract class overall but the textbook is all you really need. don't take
I am really enjoying the linear algebra course so far. This time around, I have much more experience compared to last semester. The explanations are very detailed, and the supplementary videos are a great bonus. Let's see just how deep this rabbit hole goes.
Not the teacher for me. Had a friend who took him and loved his class, however his lectures are incredibly conceptually based. As someone who learns from example problems rather than explanations this didn't really work for me. If you love math and learning about the where and why for numbers, he is your guy.
HORRIBLE EXPERINCE! If you want to excel in this class you must be a math genius. Cannot simply explain a concept. Everything is over complicated. Do yourself a favor and take any other teacher.
I want this man to touch me crazy style if you're catching my drift
As someone with a learning disability, our brains did not go together. He is a math wizard and knows what he's doing, but if you have a learning disability and learn differently he might not be for you. He has one way of things being done. He teaches one way and it doesn't work well with dyslexia IMO. Good guy, give lots of do overs, but not for me
Linear algebra is a tough course, but he explained the material well. Just attending class isn't enough, you need to put in the effort, complete the homework, and ask questions when needed. A solid foundation in Calculus 2 can be helpful especially with linear spaces. If you don't fully commit to the homework, it can come back to haunt you later.
His classes are challenging but doable for anyone aiming to get an A. I took Cal I, LA, and Honors DE, which were the best courses I've taken at NOVA. Most people loves his teaching style, and I indeed enjoyed. He has helped me a lot, both academically and with extracurricular activities. If I went back to NOVA, I would take his classes again.
Took the online Linear Algebra course. That said, based on our conversations, he cleared up a lot of the concepts I was struggling with. His notes were really helpful, and the example videos made it easier to understand how to solve the problems. Overall, the course met my expectations. I just wish he was also teaching discrete math.
His class was tough but I learned a lot. He's nice and tries to explain, though not always clearly. The grading was confusing each exam had a different total so losing a few points could drop your grade. He grades tough except for the final. The exams were def easier than the hw and he gave us plenty of time (more than 2 hours) which really helped.
One of the best math teachers around.Gave great feedback related to problems and shared additional insights and reading references to learn more about the subject.
This professor was pretty chill and nice for a precalc class. I do not know why but I liked his lectures and he did know how to keep his class focused so don't trying show disrespect to this teacher. I do remember having a good semester while taking this class so good memories while attending this course.
The professor is very nice and teaches well. He taught the course well except for the unit on vector spaces and subspaces. That chapter was the hardest thing i have seen in my whole math career. It was packed with deep concepts, and it was hard to even tell what we were really studying. Maybe some applications could've helped.
is one of the sweetest people but the amount of hw that we recieve is insane he has made himself believe that the more hw we get the better we get at math in my class we were so overwhelmed with the amount of hw we got we didnt focus on learning the actual math we were so busy trying to get it done and he only grades like two problems BEWARE the HW
Idk abt this one. He's super nice and super smart, but the way he explains things only makes sense if you already know what's going on. Very difficult class in general, especially if you're not naturally good at math. That being said, I feel that the exams are fair to what we learn in class, and you can always go to the math center for extra help.
Best math professor Iv had in NOVA. Excellent teacher, fair grader and easy to reach out to. If you have the opportunity, take his class, I took him for calc 1, linear algebra and soon differential equations. His classes fill up almost immediately though.
Great class so far. He explains concepts clearly and in detail, and he is easy to contact. I have already used things he taught us in my engineering courses. The Canvas notes and videos are super helpful and make the material easier to understand. Currently have an 'A.' Linear algebra is not easy, so you really have to keep up with the homework.
He is super caring and will help you learn, there are many problems for homework for each sections, he grades 1-2 per sections and the doing the homework and understanding is the way to pass this class. he teaches and explains very well, the videos on canvas help.
Very thorough grader He really cares He puts in so much effort to help Gives so many resources, answers every question to the best of his abilities Lectures could be more engaging
