Has no clue how to grade papers and exams.
Very hard professor, pompous (the first day of class he showed us his publications and his book), but funny guy. DON'T JUDGE HIM FROM THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS! He is also VERY funny and one of the better lecturers at Longview.
Doesn't know how to grade, pompous, his attitude can be summed up, "My way or no way". He doesn't know APA format, he assigned MLA format for a psych course!

Very funny professor more like a stand up comic than a teacher. My favorite quote from Westra is "if you stay ****ed up, no one can get on your****" Class is fun by paper is pretty challangeing.
I really liked him. Don't judge him by the first week he really is nice and can be funny at times. He gives one hell of an extra credit. I liked him and I think that you will too :)
If you are a whiner, don't take this class! Find somewhere they won't teach you anything. But if you want a great experience with a GOOD teacher...take Matthew's class. He treats people like grown-ups.
he is awesome... very fun.. interesting guy
Prof.Westra is a funny guy. He will take the time with you if you feel as though you are not clear as to what he wants. I'm sure he is a hoot in all of his classes, he actually makes learning fun.He keeps it absolutely real.
Those who want their hands held don't take Westra. Not only makes you think for yourself but outside the box. Lectures are fun and interesting.
Very entertaining man. But for tender ears, the language and off color stuff could stand improvement. The tests are not easy, but it is not difficult to be successful in his class. A serious student will do well. One wonders why students complain; do they want a free ride? He is a very fair grader.
He is one of the most entertaining people I've ever known; he makes his subjects very easy to understand and great fun, but imparts great knowledge at the same time. The tests are not hard: he just wants you to THINK rather than regurgitating needless facts. He is very helpful and warm toward students; I love him.
Fun class, lectures were interesting and not that much work involved. Tests were challenging but that is basically all of the work that we did in the class.
He posts all the answers to the tests on the web! You would have to work to fail this course. Course substance is tough, but if you do what he tells you -which isnt much, you'll pass with flying colors!
Excellent instructor. Assignments and expectations were very clear, and class was fun and educational.
A lot of people in my class had a hard time on the test, but then they would brag about how they never read the book! Not too hard to get a good grade if you just do a little work. Very entertaining teacher, too--no one would ever fall asleep in this class!
Excellent teacher, his lectures was like a comedy hour, was very helpful
Doesn't teach anything, spends entire class periods talking about miscellaneous topics(nothing to do with psych), expects you to learn everything completely on your own from the book and internet videos.Condescends constantly(funny to some, but personally I hate it when teachers make students feel stupid when they speak up and try to learn)
Mr. Westra is an awesome teacher. He is acutally interesting and educational at the same time. Definately one of the top three teachers I have ever had. You will be glad you took his class from the very first day!
Interesting teacher. Most lectures DO NOT overlap material from the book so reading the book is a MUST. All tests are mulitple choice with 40% from lectures and 60% from the book readings. You print the note pages off of his website, so note taking is minimal.
A truly great professor
He is an amazing teacher and really funny. His tests are not easy but very straight forward. Take him! :)
Class is fun but the tests are hard. MUST READ THE BOOK!!!! and do the online videos...but class is alot of fun.
Fun teacher. Very few tests and projects, so keep up with book. Tests are 20-40% from lecture and lectures do not overlap the book. Study shortcut: If you fall behind on reading, study the definitions and key points in the side margins. Use end of chapter tests to self-quiz.
Amazing teacher. Listening to him, you may think he will be an easy A, but you would be wrong. I got an A but I had to work very hard to get it. Uses his online notes, lectures, book and online videos for tests. You will not get an A if you try any shortcuts.
awesome professor. Amazing speaker and actually made me enjoy class
Great teacher. Smart & humorous. Not an easy class. You must study! But if you take the time you can pass & do well!!
If you go to his class to learn you will learn. He is a very knowledgable teacher, and he is willing to help you with anything that he can.
His multiple choice exams were hard but I made up for it with the essay papers. There were 3 exams in which I got two C's and one D, yet I got a B in the class because of the essays and extra credit assignment. Be prepared to do alot of reading.Make sure to watch all of the online videos because he asks several video related questions on the exams.
Great professor. His class is extremely interesting. I loved the class discussions. His tests are hard, but you can make up for that with the papers and extra credit.
Yeah, he's nice. That's about it. He doesn't teach from the book. It's more of what he made up himself. The notes have nothing to do with the textbook. He doesn't even give you a hint as to what will be on the tests. Not my kind of professor.
You will have to earn your grade. It's not impossible, but if you want an A, you have to put in the effort to get it.
Overall I was pleasantly surprised. Expects you to read the book on your own. Teaches from online notes. don't be intimidated, if you participate in class and ask ?'s you'll understand more. willing to re-explain concepts for clarification. attend class! includes some in-class discussion topics in test! only bummer is some mild swearing. :( study!
Excellent professor.
This is an amazing teacher. He uses alot of class input, he lets us know how we can prepare for his tests, and he is really easy to get along with.
He tells alot of stories and he is very animated. If you can get away with it, this should be the only class you take because there is excesive reading and studying for all the tests. And you shouldn't miss one class because you will be behind unless you get help from classmates or teacher. He likes to explain everything and answer any questions.
He is a great speaker, very lively and interesting to listen to- with lots of stories. You need to attend class regularly and take notes, he gives you online notes but then he adds to it in class. Tests are kind of hard, so you will need to study and be familiar with material. Very nice though, and very helpful! I really liked his class!
Westra's awesome. He's very open-minded and loves class discussion. He makes it fun, clear, and easy, but also makes you think in an alternative way. GREAT PROFESSOR.
WORST TEACHER EVER. Don't take this class if you want to learn anything.
I LOVE this man!! He is so nice and so funny at times I felt like I was watching a stand up comedian perform. But don't let him humor and good personality make you think it's an easy class. READ YOUR BOOK FOR TESTS! and you will be fine.. notes are just to get a better understanding but the book is where everything is at. Highly recommend him!!!!!!
Awesome teacher! Funny, interesting, real, and uses perfect examples. Very good communicator, and very kind. Teaching may not be perfect because he gets off topic and goes through material very slowly. Regardless, though, he made psych my favorite class of the semester. I learned a lot.
Amazing teacher... He makes the material interesting and fun. I enjoyed his class very much.
I loved Westra. Everyone scared me talking about him. But I honestly got an A without struggle. Do the extra credit. Have him read your papers prior to turning in. Very interesting class. Not the normal boring lecture. I took the 8wk class and was bummed when it ended. He's up front about difficulty.
Nice guy...do not advice taking it if u want to pass.
very funny and interesting. requires a lot of reading outside of class. Do your extra credit, and turn in papers early. but he is very difficult with his tests. each one was 45 pts and over atleast 6 chapters with about 8Q's per chapter... so if you don't read a chapter your test grade is automatically at a B.
Great teacher. Tells you what you need to know and do. He uses emphasis as a guide so pay attention.
hit the back button and pretend you never even thought about taking the class........you're welcome! :)
Fun teacher to have but he makes i difficult. Failed 3 out of the 4 test, and a 100% on the paper which counted as a quiz grade and somehow managed to get a B in the class. Would recommend him if you are interested in Psychology but don't expect him to let you pass without trying.
Sensational teacher. My interest in psychology skyrocketed because of this teacher. He's inspirational, engaging, an all around fantastic teacher. His humor was relevant to his lessons. I LOVED this teacher.
Great teacher. I voted HOT, because he's gorgeous- however that doesn't show up for some reason.
Dude, this professor is funny and a down-to-earth person. But as far as teaching goes- he is always getting off topic and does not teach anything from the book. His tests are extremely hard because we are not taught what we need to know in class. Friendly person, bad professor!
I've had 8-week courses that were so rushed they were almost unpassable, but Mr. Westra's was different. I've never had a better teacher for an 8-week course. He is funny, interesting, and fair. He gives extra credit options, explains everything clearly, and answers your emails. I don't know why you'd take psych from any other teacher.
It was not an easy class. However, very passable. He is very fair. He tells you what you need to know and teaches in a way that you need to know it. If you cannot think conceptually than you will not make it. Great teacher. Wish I could have him for more classes.
Westra is ****in. He's fun, funny, clear on the material, cares about students' welfare, and knows what he's talking about. I look forward to his class so much! And I learn a lot!
Interesting teacher. In Psychology 240, we had no textbook. We used lecture notes that he provided on his website. If you remember the stuff in his notes, you'll do well in his class.
Had Prof Westra for 3 classes this semester and all 3 were bit**'in! Loved the classes and his style of teaching. Provides you with notes - USE THEM and you will do fine on his tests! You will determine if his class is easy or hard. Be there, read all notes, listen to lectures and do assignments and you will leave happy! (chili pepper)
Plain and simple... I thought he was very arrogant, both in and out of class. I couldn't stand him as a teacher. I personally know two other people who had him and that was their opinion of him.
I loved this teacher! He was extremely helpful, allowed you to e-mail him if you needed help and said that if for any reason I needed to take his class again, I would be able to edit and redo my final paper. He's a great teacher!
Westra is the man. He's fun and knows what he is talking about, and how to teach it. If he gives you a hard time, don't take it to heart because he's loves to kid and joke. Do your part as a student, and you'll do great.
Westra continually goes off topic for long periods of time, uses elaborate unhelpful examples and expects students to love it. We do not have a textbook but I think I will buy one so that I can learn the concepts I want to learn on my own.
Took Psyc 140 w/ westra and 1st impression was good. A class filled with funny, interesting stories. Unfortunately all the notes I had taken in class were useless in preparing me for tests. If I had it to do over, I would skip lectures to read the textbook. I retook the course w/Dr. Bahner, she was great. Check her ratings. Loved her :-D
Westra has a tendousy to get off topic. However, he is a great teacher! He is more than willing to help you and as long as you read the notes, read the readings and attend class, you will do great!
Westra understands that textbooks cost a LOT. My class used only articles from internet databases. Trust everyone's reviews: his tests are difficult. But if you have been awake in class and used the supplemental readings, videos, etc., you CAN get an A in the class. Excellent. And.... Just for you, Westra- your first chili pepper!!!!
This class was interesting and fairly easy. He does have a tendency to get off topic, but he still covers what he needs to in the class. As long as you attend classes you'll be fine. There are some chapters you need to read and some that don't matter so much. He also posts his lecture notes online, which is really nice. I would take his class again
westra made class fun to come to and interesting, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to read the book. 8 quizzes and the final test were all the grades, so it is important to not bomb too many points. overall, class was enjoyable and teacher was helpful, offering an extra credit assignment for struggling students.
Brilliant! He tends to get off topic, but can still teach consistently. It's incredibly important to read the textbook! He gives great classroom discussion and notes, but ALWAYS includes information from the text.
Very helpful and fun. He really cares about his students. Makes sure you know psychology. Best lectures, every story has a meaning and helps you remember the concept. Study a lot, he posts his powerpoints that are very helpful. Understand the main ideas in the book for tests. Only 4 tests a paper and extra credit paper involved in my 8 week grade
Matthew is a terrific teacher. Plan to read the chapters in the book and pay attention to the examples he gives in class and you should do fine. I took the summer term. 3 tests and a paper with an extra credit assignment, I did the museum which was awesome. You will love this teacher.
My favorite teacher of my entire life, great guy interesting and I learned a lot in his class.
I love this teacher! he is soo funny really gives examples that help you understand the concepts . all his notes were online. make sure to read the book and focus on notes where the book over laps info. GREAT TEACHER!
He has a great personality, but as far as his actual teaching I would not reccomend him. His tests are very complex. I take notes, engage in class discussions, and read the book but yet the test is STILL challenging.
My favorite class this semseter. He is a VERY funny guy. Made us laugh a lot. He can be rude and loves to make fun of students-just don't take it too personally. Loved the class- would take from him again! Tests are complex though so really study his notes and lecture! what he says in class shows up on the tests!
Best professor ever! I looked forward to every class, because he adds so much humor to psychology. You can tell he is an incredibly intelligent man. His tests were challenging, but as long as you read the book and watch the videos it is an easy A. Just don't wait until the last minute! Those videos take hours of your time!
Westra is my favorite teacher at MCC. He's so freaking hilarious. He has no other "flavor" than sarcasm. Be prepared to have him poke fun at you! It's what he does best. His tests in psych 140 are pretty in-depth and are always 55 questions long. just be sure to put in the time to study!
Best professor EVER! I've taken every class that he teaches at Longview! Don't expect to be able to slack off but DO expect to be entertained because he's hilarious!!!
Super, awesome,HILARIOUS professor! Very helpful too! I wish he taught more classes at Longview because I'd take all of them!!!
Matthew Westra is a great teacher. I don't think I had enough time to absorb the material. I would take this course in person and not online. On top of this being an online course, the class I took was an accelerated 7-week course for the summer semester. I found the subject matter too much to absorb in 7 weeks. Not teacher's fault- he was great
Westra is a great teacher! He's very helpful and is always available for help if needed. The lectures are enjoyable and you need to pay attention cause the tests are based off those! That the texbook and all the videos an you'll pass the class. I recommend this teacher!
GREAT TEACHER! His class discussions are phenomenal. He is open and understanding, always respectful, and engaging. He has the most interesting opinions, I would take every class he offers!
WONDERFUL professor!! I did not do the best in this course, due to his exams being the only grade, and they are EXTREMELY difficult, but he will go ABOVE & BEYOND to help his students. I have never had a professor as helpful, and kind as him. STUDY your life away for his exams though. They are all applications, not memory based.
Easy class. Great personality. Application based. Study the book material tho because that's what's on the test. Know vocab from book even tho he doesn't ask for specific definitions his test are super hard. DO the extra credit!!!!
Westra is very funny but your grade is ONLY off test, therefore if you do not test well you will NOT pass his class. He also offer extra credit but you have to work supper hard to get the 10 points.
Matt Westra makes students read but he is an excellent teacher. I learned so much in his class and would like to have him as a professor in the future.
He is such a terrific teacher. His lectures are fun, and he definitely knows what he is talking about. If you want to get an A, really study the book and any videos he posts through blackboard. There were many application questions on the tests.
This class was awesome! It made a subject I wasn't into fun. I wish all of my professors could be this awesome.
Mr. WESTRA is witty and funny. Always looked forward to his class. Sit up front and engage to get the most out of his lectures. Test are tough, must read, study book chapters and watch the videos!
This class was tough. Theres only a chance to earn 350 points so if you screw up on a test, youre screwed. Speaking of the tests, they're so hard.
He not only knows what he is talking about, he clarifies if you aren't getting it. Just say so. He doesn't play games with your grading, he has straight up grading deadlines so there is no confusion, he gives great feedback. He teaches because he loves it & is passionate for it and makes you want to go, & is funny, & truly gives a crap about you.
Very fun professor. He is passionate about what he does and relates information to real life situations. I always enjoy coming to class because he is hilarious. He has several ways to explain things if you don't understand it the first time, don't be afraid to ask! Tests are tough but if you show up to class and read your book you will be fine.
I took the 8-week online Psych 101 class with Prof Westra. His tests are tough, but if you do the readings and the online quizzes, you should be able to get at least a C on them. There are weekly "quizzes" (you can keep taking it to reach 100%) and discussion boards. It's tough if you have never taken psych before, but good professor over all.
Westra makes you work for it for sure. His tests are based off of chapter readings, lectures, and Ted Talks. Don't try to cram for his tests, you won't pass them. This course takes a lot of time out of your schedule to get an A. If you're wanting an easy class, I wouldn't take him. He is always willing to help when you ask though.
Mr. Westra was one of the most caring, thoughtful, and generous teachers I have know. He expects students to work for their grades, which is what college should be about. He prepares students well for the future.
He is literally the best teacher ever. His lectures are amazing and you won't fall a sleep. He knows what he is talking about. I world take him for all psychology classes if I could. Definitely take him. My favorite teacher ever!!!
Amazing. I though Psych was gonna be terrible, but it was a lot of fun actually. You can tell Westra has been teaching a while. It was an online class, but I never had any problems understanding what he was asking for. I took the 8 week version. Be prepared to read 2 40 page chapters a week. Other than that, loved it.
This was by far one of my favorite classes. It is completely discussion and not as much lecture. I was the first class for this section, so it was kind of slow since it hadn't been taught. The papers are not too long and relatively easy to finish. The tests are based off of the book and in class discussion.
MR. WESTRA IS THE BEST! I LOVE HIM! I WANNA TAKE ANOTHER CLASS OF HIS!
He is an amazing professor and person. I took the 8-week version and it was wonderful. There were only 8 people in the class and he kept it super chill. It was like hanging out with a friends, but learning at the same time. Watch the ted talks and do the inquisitives. You'll pass no problem.
Good instructor! do the online quizzes and keep up with his lectures, you'll be fine!
I took this class during the summer semester online. There was a lot of reading involved and a few papers due. There was also a group assignment, which in a condensed class, was a little hard to get everybody to cooperate. I would like to see how her classes are during a normal semester. She was always available when needed.
Westra was absolutely amazing! He was so funny and relatable and if I could, I would take this class again! Read your textbook and do the online quizzes! Watch the videos before tests and you'll do well on those specific questions. Also, do the extra credit! It was awesome!
He was a very good teacher. Very funny, and connected a lot of his points to real life examples, but I feel like everything he lectured about had nothing to do with the tests. I took so many notes, but they got me no where unless you read the book cover to cover.
Matthew Westra is my favorite professor I have had so far. He knows how to make the class fun and enjoyable. Westra class is a fair class. If you study and do the inquizitives then you are most likely going to pass his class with a descent grade. Mr. Westra takes the time to get to know his students and shows he cares about them and that they pass
He is hilarious. Great great great professor, but his exams are hard! But to be honest, I took a hybrid 8-week class so maybe that is why it was hard.
Matthew Westra is a great professor and is very funny. I always laughed in class. However though I must warn you, he is funny, but his class is not easy. I'm probably just saying that cause I took an 8 week hybrid. But to the point. Hybrid or not, if you don't do the homework or study you will fail. But if you do, then you should pass.
Mr. Westra is a great professor. He makes class interesting for 65 minutes. His class is one of the hardest classes I ever taken. His lectures are not base on the test and the test are base on 4 chapters that you read three weeks prior. I think he should test before getting the next 4 chapters. The Ted Talks should be banned. the quizlet are ok
Professor Westra is a very intelligent teacher. His class is not an easy A. If you work to get all 100% on InQuizitive, study the lecture notes, watch all videos assigned no matter what, and read the book, you should do well. If you are having difficulty understanding a concept, he will help willingly. He is often sarastic and very funny.
Get ready to read the book cover to cover if you have him. Lectures have nothing to do with tests. Get ready to teach yourself. He was funny but lectures were poorly explained.
He actually cares about his students. His tests are hard, but if you do the work, participate in lectures, inquizitives, and watch the videos, you can easily get an A. His tests are application and not memorization. Know how to use what you learned.
The thing to be aware of are the Inquizitives. If you take the class, start reading the book almost immediately. It also helps to always be ahead by 1 assignment. The due dates are never really mentioned so its good to be prepared. Often goes off the rails. While he is funny, none of the lectures really have any material.
Westra was one of the best professors I took at Longview. His lectures are funny and entertaining, he does his best to keep you interested in the material, and if you don't understand he will explain the material in a different way. Pay attention to the Inquisitives and STUDY for the tests, He does offer extra credit if you need it.
I took his 8 week online course. Discussion boards and inquizatives were simple. His tests are difficult but he clearly states that in his syllabus. Read the entire chapter and watch the Ted talks/videos assigned. The tests were the only thing that really affected my grade.
Westra is passionate about psychology and education. He is an excellent instructor that is understanding but maintains academic integrity. If you do the reading, inquisitives, and watch the assigned videos - you will learn a lot while succeeding in the class. The lectures are intriguing, starting with chapter one, which is mostly critical thinking.
Super hilarious and nice but makes you read the book, listen to lectures, do inquizitive, and watch tedtalks.
Mr. Westra is by far one of my favorite professors I have ever had in college and in my entire life! He is so funny and the in class discussions r so thought provoking and interesting. I never wanted class to end. The only thing I would change about his class is that I would make them not so test based. Like I would add a few more assignments in.
No choice for Comm233 Intercultural Communications. I am baffled that it wasnt packed. It was challenging in the sense of how solid your own views are and how well you can comprehend where another is coming from. Westra is enjoyable to learn from. I still worked hard on the 3 short papers and did utilize the easy-to-read chapters in the book.
BEST. TEACHER. EVER. 3 papers, 15 small chapter quizzes, midterm and final. Midterm and Final are strictly over class lecture so make sure you go to class! Quizzes are from textbook. Westra is passionate about what he teaches & wants you to succeed. He was happy to answer any questions I had. No extra credit. Do the work you'll pass the class.
Prof. Westra was absolutely hilarious. Really enjoyed his lectures. Be warned, his exams cover class notes, mandatory videos, textbook chapters, and lecture info (different from class notes). Paying attention was key in order to know what'll be on the exams. He does offer an extra credit opportunity and extra credit questions on the exams.
His test were pretty hard because they were in depth. You have to pay attention in class, watch the mandatory videos, and do the reading assigned if you want to pass this class. He does his best to make sure that you know all the information needed to succeed in his class. Overall, he was funny, interactive, and has great experience.
Great professor!! I took him for Human Lifespan Development and the class was surprisingly easy. You only write 3 papers (which are only worth 20pts each), take an easy online quiz every week, and take a midterm & final exam. THATS IT. Take him. You won't regret it. Him being so funny is just a plus!!
He's an awesome guy, extremely entertaining and his lectures are never boring. Unfortunately he's a super tough grader, and his exams are really difficult. There is no type of study guide, and you're required to read a crazy amount of articles, watch a lot of ted talks, and remember intricate details from class notes.
This class is extremely test heavy. Literally only 4 exams and 2 assignments the entire semester. The tests are pretty hard, but in the online class it is open book and notes. Stay organized and on top of the reading and ted talks and you'll do fine. He's a quick grader on the assignments and quick to get back to you on anything.
Mr. Westra has been my favorite teacher so far in college. He is funny and caring. His lectures are always fun and his exams aren't too bad. Just study the notes and you'll do just fine. Take him because there aren't too many teachers as fun as Westra.
I had to take this course multiple times. The last semester I took this course with this professor, he was very sarcastic and rude. I barely passed this class a second time and I did all of the work. Prof. is confusing. I completed the work asked and it felt like the tests didn't relate to the material being tested over. Mainly ted talks for tests.
Attend classes, do the readings he has posted, watch and remember the TED talks, and participate in class. At first I thought he was arrogant, but once the class started participating as a whole more, he is a very real person. Very smart and makes things easy to understand. If you guess at something, then the worst you can be is wrong, he says.
Westra is an amazing teacher very interactive in class, he makes sure you know the material. TED talks and reading the chapters in the book he assigns each unit are critical to the test. Also anything said is class is fair game on the test, so dont skip. Overall amazing teacher, but stay organized
The only bad thing I have to say about him is he gets off topic very easily because he really enjoys conversations with the class. He is so funny and his personality alone makes you want to come back to class. Just make sure to pay attention during his lectures, especially if you take the hybrid class.
Took Psychology 140 last semester. The professor never stayed on topic during lectures. He would tell random stories that meant nothing to what we were learning. Very rude and sarcastic if you have a question. Doesn't assign any homework. His class was once a week and we would pretty much take a 50 question test every class. Would not recommend!
He was very rude and always was off-topic. His test have nothing to do with the lecture at all. He talks about things that don't even matter.
I enjoyed his class and would take him again. He was very helpful and really seemed to want his students to do well and understand the material. He was very quick to respond to emails, as well.
He is an amazing teacher. He is the most engaging professor over zoom I have come across. The tests are difficult but if you study you will pass them. You have to have the textbook and actually read it. He gives you the tools to succeed and cares about you!
He is a great teacher. We were graded on two papers and 8 quizzes (1 every 2 weeks). His lectures are great. My only issue was the quizzes; they require you to apply everything you learned. No definitions or clear answers. Therefore, reading the chapters and taking notes are extremely necessary. Other than that, he is very caring and awesome.
He is one of my favorite teachers I have had. He is so so nice and super funny. The work was not hard, there were 8 quizzes but none of them were too bad. There are also only two papers and they did not take me too long to complete. Definitely recommend taking him!
A really good professor that gives great lectures and has a sense of humor. Truly a great guy.
Took this class early this semester. Westra was a funny and helpful professor. He gave great feedback on all my assignments and his lectures were short and to the point. There are a lot of notes youll need to take but it was all interesting and helpful to me. Tests were a bit difficult but as long as you study, youll be fine
My favorite teacher so far. He was very helpful and obviously really wanted you to understand the material. He was always quick to respond and gave plenty of good feedback. I thoroughly recommend his class.
This is by far my favorite class I have taken at MCC. Super interesting course material, and I love the way this prof set up the online class. Didn't get to talk to prof much, but he is nice! Deadlines were clear and the amount of work in one week was definitely manageable. Read the textbook and take notes if you want to do well!
I took Psych 140 online in 8 weeks. The workload each week was heavy and included a lot of reading, ted talk videos, and notes. The first exam and final were proctored, but using quizlet to study as well as the exam checks really helped!
Westra is an amazing guy, very funny, and has amazing lectures. However, the tests almost have nothing to do with what is covered in class, there's no homework so your grade 100% depends on the tests, and you have to read a lot of articles and watch a lot of Ted Talks. He's a very caring professor and he's awesome, but his class is very hard.
Westra is hilarious but can be a little rude sometimes. He makes lectures interesting when you go, but this class could EASILY be taken online. 8 quizzes every two weeks (Quizlet) and three papers (two of them you can do over a movie and the third is an assessment essay). Can be tough with grading papers, but overall it's an easy A!
Professor Westra's lectures were painful to sit through. He was always all over the place and his tests had absolutely nothing to do with the information provided in his lectures. There is a TON of required reading and TED Talks you must watch. He doesn't allow notes to be used for tests and doesn't go over what will be on the tests.
Seems nice and knowledgeable, but nothing from his class lectures are on any of the exams. Lots of reading (free book that he is the author of..) and ted talk videos to prepare for the exams. Spent plenty of time studying and still barely finished the class with a C. Stay away from his classes if you're worried about your GPA dropping...
Westra is a great person but a not so great teacher, at least his book is free. He puts topics on tests that he does not cover in class. I was unable to drop the course due to personal reasons. He only grades tests so you better do well. Fortunately, I passed general psychology with another professor when I transferred.
While he has a humorous personality, his egotistical demeanor overshadowed the learning environment. There was a significant disconnect between class discussions and the exams, leaving many students, including myself, feeling unprepared. He did not accommodate different learning styles, expecting everyone to excel on exams without adequate support.
Prof. Westra's class is heavy on readings and TED talks, with exams not well aligned to lectures. Using Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me manage the workload and get a decent grade.
