I really enjoyed Brother Whoolery's class. It's not too hard, but you still learn a lot. He gives you amazing study guides and if you prepare with them, the tests are cake.
I thought that this class was amazing! I was not looking forward to taking psychology at all and now it is my minor! Brother Whoolery makes this class very interesting and he takes time out to help you if you need. He wants to see he students succeed and helps you prepare well for the exam. I never fell asleep once during his 90 min lecture!
This teacher is incredible! Honestly, best teacher ever. I have learned so much about who I am in this class. He really makes you think about life and keeps psychology really interesting. I would be excited to go to this class every time and never wanted to miss it. I would take all my classes from him if I could. You wont be disappointed at all.
Awesome teacher. Real down to earth thinking. Will be totally willing to help if you go see him during his office hours or email him. Weekly open note online quizzes that help add up points. Study guides given for tests. Keeps class so interesting. Good sense of humor. You will enjoy class. Fun projects. TAKE THIS CLASS!. He's the man. =]
He requires a final film project, which was a large waste of time. He also is a very subjective essay grader who is more interested in his idea of good writing than your knowledge of the material. But he is a very nice person with very interesting insights, and I enjoyed his lectures.
Makes development interesting, if you have never read one of these books then you have no idea how boring it can be.
I really liked this teacher a lot. He's caring and considerate and really helped me out when I was having a tough time. He was always there to talk, even if it wasn't directly related to tests or even the subject (he gave me some ideas for books to read!)
A very good teacher! He is very open minded and funny. He is the kind of teacher that I think is best for a place like BYU-Idaho. You're not going to get "blah blah blah I'm a closed minded Mormon" You'll get great stories and a teacher that is more than willing to help you with anything.
Way fun class! I actually really learned a lot. He uses the textbooks a lot and different text books are being used starting this fall. Go to class, take good notes, and study hard for the exams and quizes and you'll do fine. Also really helpful if you ask for the help. I recommend him for anyone who wants to take this class!!
Entertaining! He has a great sense of humor. Grades tough but fair. Do your reading.
Bad at test taking? AVOID! 3 exams total. The class average for the 1st one- a mid C. second-0 high D... If you want an A, don't take him.
This class was hard. I really had to adjust my study habits. I reserved at least 5 hours a week to study for this class. But he was fun to listen to, not that it was always relavent, but it was interesting. I learned a lot.
TAKE THIS PROF. Seriously. Whoolery has got to be one of the best teachers. incorporates funny stories into his lectures. Quizzes once a week, make sure you are there, a bit of reading but its totally worth it. Quizzes easy if you read, tests still hard but he gives extra credit, just make sure you do it.I am way lazy but would def take him again.
whoolery is very open-minded and I know I go to a LDS university so i should expect it, but it is nice that he doesnt bear his testimony every five minutes. I probably only heard him incorporate the gospel a few times during the semester. Great prof
Bro. Whoolery is funny and nice and teaches you a lot about psychology in life. Loved the class. Fairly hard, reading the chapters is so long! Read chapter and day of quiz I recommend reading summary and going over vocab. Tests are hard but he curves adn gives quite a bit of extra credit.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have taken in my undergraduate. He tests like a pyschology teacher, unclear. You never know what the test will be over exactly. I would not take this teacher. He is funny, but entertainment does not help you getting a better grade!
Brother Whoolery is very passionate about the Middle East. He makes you read a lot, but it is really interesting. All in all, he's pretty good.
Definately recommend taking Middle East from him. He knows a lot about it. Don't get scared away by his rant against cell phones and plagerism. Really nice guy. Lots of reading, but it's usually interesting. Do the work & you pass.
TAKE HIM IF YOU EVER GET THE CHANCE!!! Seriously an awesome guy and a GREAT teacher. He is a great example to how we should all be...gives great diverse views on every subject.
He is a great teacher and class is always entertaining. His readings are immense! You have to write outlines for each class period and come prepared to give a 5-7 minute summery of the reading because he might call on you. He didn't give tests but we had essays that we had to submit online 4-5 times this semester. Grades pretty tough. Good luck
Middle East was a very interesting class in content. He's not the most exciting teacher but he definately has good personal experience stories to share. I learned a ton from this class and gained a much greater respect for the people of the Middle East. I would recommend taking the class from Brother Whoolery...maybe not early morning though...
I absolutely LOVED Brother Whoolery. Although his tests are tough, as soon as you get a hang of them, they aren't as bad. You are allowed a note card of notes for each test. I learned so much taking his class. The chapters are a bit long to read, but I found them quite interesting. I recommend anyone to take him.
Matthew Whoolery He awesome TAKE THIS CLASS!He is so nice and is willing to help with everything HE IS AWESOME!
He's a funny and good teacher. Test are a little hard because he doesn't quite go over the material in class. Instead he wanders off subject very easily and talks about things that aren't even mentioned in quiz or test. Not hard to get an A though.
Very good teacher. Class was never boring
I loved his class it was a 8:00 in the morning and I'm not a morning person but he made it so enjoyable that I woke up for that class!
He is a good enough guy but talks about infidelity quite a bit. His classes are interesting, and I found that I enjoyed them very much. His tests are quite hard though, even with the 3X5 he allows you in the center. If you show up to his class and take notes and are a decent writer this class shouldn't be too difficult or time consuming.
What a terrible teacher. He spends more time talking about his "perfect" kids than he does talking about Psychology. Coming to class is useless because he NEVER covers the material. We have yet to even discuss personality, which is the topic of this class! The tests are too difficult and I have never scored so consistently low in my life.
Yes his tests are hard. Understand he expects you to READ your text. Not just do a once over. Also understand he has views about psych, life, and the church that are not the norm for BYU-I. If you are a rank and file conservative Mormon you probably wont like his class. What he wants is for you to keep an open mind and make your own decisions.
TAKE BROTHER WHOOLERY!! I took him for Middle East and he is AWESOME!! He knows everything about it and his class is sooo interesting! His tests are fine if you do all the readings and pay attention in class. And he always is willing to answer any questions! HE REALLY IS THE BEST TEACHER!! I'm definitely taking more classes from him!
This class is one of the MOST INSIGHTFUL CLASSES I've ever taken, and one cause is Brother Whoolery himself! He has LIVED IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES and is able to teach concepts from a number of DIFFERENT view points. This guy is a TRUE CHRISTIAN. He helps you see contrasts clearly. The BEST TEACHER at BYU-Idaho! Mormon? You need him.
I took The Middle East from him. I loved going to class everyday. He really expands your mind and gets you to see different cultures in a positive light. Great guy. Lived IN the Middle East. Qualified. He's hilarious. You have to outline lengthy readings for each class period but the class ends up being totally worth it. Take this prof!
Great Teacher...was never bored in class, even tho it was really early in the morning! I also took a Middle East class with him, he wants his students to succeed, and if you do the reading and study you'll get a good grade.
Awesome. So nice to have a Professor that actually speaks their mind and allows you to speak yours. He is a true faithful LDS member - not one who worships man-made rules and LDS culture. No matter your personal beliefs, he will force you to open your mind and think of things in ways you haven't before. It was REFRESHING to have a prof. like him.
He is the best professor I have ever had here! Everything he says rings true with me in some way or another. I love how he is able to expand your mind and help you to see the other side. He is so funny and it is a delight to be in class.
He made psych applicable in daily life with hands-on interactive experience which made class fun and intriguing. He allows a 4x5 card for exams. He does not try to indoctrinate psych philosophies but encourages you to seek out for yourself. Gives such a strong base and will admit when psych is questionable.
I liked taking middle east from him because he was enthusiastic and really knows how it is/was in the middle east. He makes sure that the students get the whole story about the middle east and their culture. It's eye opening. :)
One of the best and most influential classes I've ever taken! A great professor with a lot of experience! I learned so much from this class. I loved the Middle East class I took from him. He lived in the Middle East, so he knows what he is talking about. His tests are a little bit harder, but you can use a 4x6 with them.
Requirements- 2 to 3 page outline for a 10-20 page reading assignment due each class (first few are very hard, but you will get better/faster), 1 ridiculously easy "essay" (short letter to a friend about middle east), and 3 tests he goes over in detail. ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS/CLASSES I HAVE EVER HAD. I have learned tons changed as a person.
A lot of reading for the class. Tests come from the book and does give a study guide, but you will need to prepare and study to do well. Very interesting class!
Brother Whoolery is the best! My class with him is 3 hours, yet it is my favorite class. He has awesome life experiences that relate to everything we talk about. We do cool activities, get hypnotized and get notecards on tests. Also the final is not cumulative which is really helpful. TAKE HIME FOR PSYCHOLOGY!
Matt was a fantastic teacher. His lecture was always interesting, and the discussions were always fascinating. Loved the class, loved the theory, loved the teaching method.
boring class. the subject was interesting but was totally pointless to attend class. TONS of reading sometimes 40 pages for homework for one night others averaged between 15-20 pages plus you have to do an outline. nice teacher.
Great teacher. His lectures were interesting and fun to attend. He didnt waste time in class. If you did the reading and the quizzes then you got a good grade. He made time to meet with students outside of class if they needed help
Bro Who is HILARIOUS! One of my favorite teachers ever. I learned so much in this class and loved attending. I took the 7pm - 10pm class on wed and it usually never felt like 3 hrs. Tests are pretty easy if you study. Bro Who is very helpful and willing to take time for you. Take a class from him!
I absolutely loved his class. My class was 3 hours but it was by far my favorite and most entertaining class. In class, he focuses on how you can apply psychology in your life, however, he never covered all the material needed for the test so you have to read the book, and do the study guide to pass the exams. Defiantly take his class if you can.
I love Brother Whoolery! He is such and good teacher. He makes class really interesting. He's also very approachable and super funny. TAKE PSYCH FROM HIM!!!!!
Personality isn't what I thought it was, all of it was personality theory which can be a bit of a snooze. Brother Whoolery seems nice and has lots of stories that are interesting but if you talk to him...deep down he's kind of a jerk.
His classes are fun to attend, the homework can be difficult to keep up with but a few weeks into the semester it becomes easy. The way he thinks is unlike anyone else I've ever met and I really appreciate his unusual perspective on psychology and life in general. If you want to learn a lot and have your mind opened to other things, take him :)
Brother Whoolery was a great teacher and extremely insightful. He completely changed my perspectives on a lot of topics and I always enjoyed the class discussions. I would highly recommend to take psych classes with Brother Whoolery!
Professor is eager to teach material and ready to answer questions immediately and to the best of his ability while still managing to stay on course with the chapter reading.
Bro. Whoolery is a funny guy, and his class starts of VERY interesting. However the further into the semester the more I realized the class wasn't what I had hoped for. Whoolery is ultimately unorganized and goes on useless tangents that get boring. The more I know him the more I think he is cocky and rude. Assigns TONS of busy work!
I would recommend him to anyone. He has a different take on psychology that isn't mainstream. He has done his research, and he is brilliant! I don't agree with everything, but he sure makes you think and opens your mind. His class teaches you how to be a good student. He wants students to come talk to him even just for a friend. He is very loving
Brother Whoolery is an engaging, entertaining, and insightful teacher. He will also strengthen your faith in the Gospel midst the philosophies of men that Psychology is so full of. Homework is simple and class discussion is fun.
Doesn't teach much relevant material for the tests, more of a teach yourself course. But definitely an inspirational professor, I always learn a lot about myself and change my views about the world in Whoolery's class!
I love Bro. Whoolery more than I can possibly state in this few of characters! His classes will change the way you see everything! Prepare to have your mind blown and redesigned to accommodate facets and perspectives you had never before realized existed! In my humble opinion, Bro. Whoolery is Heavenly Fathers apology for the culture at this school.
Best psych teacher around. Does a great job incorporating non-traditional views to give different perspectives. Loved this class and I learned a ton!
Brother Whoolery was by far my favorite psychology teacher. He is unique in his own personality and teaching style. He is well educated and is easy to talk to. The homework is standard and like clock-work. You get what you put into this class. His expectations are clear and his lectures are interesting and relevant. 100% would take him again.
My favorite professor up to date. Very smart and insightful. He's the man
Awesomely entertaining teacher. He speaks like 5 languages and had traveled the world so cool stories and examples. Learned a ton and really enjoyed it. You have to study a lot.
Bro Whoolery is so awesome. He gives such great insights and has a very fresh view of psychology that helps you learn a lot. It's especially great to take him if you are wanting to become a therapist. He is definitely not your average BYUI professor but students respect him because of his realness. Take his classes for sure.
If you do your part and read the assigned reading before every lecture during the semester your going to get a lot out of this class for sure! Be prepared to get your mind blown. Brother Whoolery is super helpful and clear cut on his requirements for his class. He teaches you how to truly learn and is by far the best professor I've ever had.
I want him to adopt me. He is so cool.
He was a great teacher. He had many insights into other cultures and made it lectures very interesting. I loved listening to his stories. The class is easy, just do the reading. There are outlines that are due every class that the reading was on, but once you get the hang of them they are easy.
He has you outline everything you read. Its tough at first but after awhile you get the hang of it. He causes you to think and gives you a fresh perspective of psychology. I really appreciate the principles and skills I learned from him. He cares about his students and makes time to work with them. I would highly recommend taking him
Brother Whoolery is a charismatic and fun teacher. His opinions can be a little offensive at times though. I found the outlines he required to be tedious busy work. He claimed that he wasn't trying to trick us on his exams, but I found his tests to be a bit cryptic. Overall it was a fun experience and I learned a lot.
If you have the chance to take Brother Whoolery TAKE HIM! Most inspirational teacher in the PSYCH department. He actually cares about you learning applicable material that you can use and doesn't care about jumping through the hoops. I've taken several of his classes and every one changed my life. You read books and interesting articles. He's a 10
Don't leave BYU-I without taking a class from Dr. Whoolery. By far the best lecture based class I've ever taken. He will open your mind to new ideas and philosophies.
I absolutely loved this class. I would get excited excited to go. He can't be super personable to everyone but you can see how much he cares for every student. I makes class entertaining and easy to learn and remember things. I would take this class over and over again even if I received no credit.
You read several articles & books. Some of the books you will only read a few chapters from. You write 2 page outlines for almost all readings. Tests are typically 30 questions and focus on the readings basic concepts. In class you discuss the topics from the articles, book chapters. This class is mostly theory learning. He gives good feedback
You read a few articles besides textbook. You write 2 page outlines for almost all readings/book chapters. Tests are typically 30 questions and focus on the readings basic concepts. In class you discuss the topics from the articles, book chapters. This class is about more in-depth learning about psychologists and their theories/discoveries
He actually doesn't have a textbook but he does have your read books and different texts that he provides on ILearn. The homework is easy, you just have to outline what you read. He's test are also pretty easy and he does reviews. He is an amazing teacher and brings his experience into what he teaches. You can also tell that he really cares.
Good chance to learn from a great guy. Very relaxed yet still has expectations. Tests are the most difficult part of the class and it helps to really understand the gist and essence of the readings.
Professor Whoolery is a life changing professor. He is nervous by new students at first, but he is more afraid of you at the start than you are of him. Some people say he's arrogant but he's not. If you are someone who is very churchy you probably won't like him, because he challenges the culture in the area. Which I love and is needed.
Loved his classes and him as a professor and person. He has lots of knowledge about different cultures, especially Eastern culture. He requires lots of reading and outlines of reading, but it's very worth it. Amazing discussions and fascinating topics. His Personality class is also very good. He is very relatable and caring. Definitely recommend.
Honestly one of my favorite professors Ive ever had. Really cool guy. I dont think Ive met anyone like him. The class and his teaching made a lasting impact on me and influenced the way I see the world. Really interesting, enjoyable, and refreshing class and teacher.
This was a LIFE CHANGING class for me. He was one of best professors I have ever had. His lectures are like works of art and he really helps you to actually learn and think. The class is set up to do some readings and make an outline, and that's the only homework you ever have. Then there are tests every once in a while but they are pretty easy.
Easily one of my favorite professors. He is very knowledgable of the subject, and applies his personal experiences to the subject. You can also tell he genuinely cares about his students and is passionate about teaching. There may be some controversial topics, but if you're a psych major that won't be a problem. Interesting and fun class.
Brother Whoolry is an amazing professor. His lectures are so interesting. He lets the students guide the lectures for the most part so we learn what we want to. He is super fun and personal.
He's alright. I don't understand the hype around him tbh.
Whoolery is an amazing teacher, my favorite so far. He goes off on tangents a lot where he talks about really interesting and funny, but relevant stories. You won't regret taking a class from him. I would recommend Cultural Psych.
An excellent teacher who will give a unique perspective on Psychology. If you want to become familiar and competent in understanding the impact of psychology and culture on one another - or even if you only care about becoming a good citizen of the world - take his class.
Really funny and great teacher. Allows notecard for tests
Brother Whoolery will blow your mind and open your eyes to eastern thinking and way of life. He has lived all over the world and has a deep understanding of people. You'll learn more about people (and yourself) in Cultural Psychology than any American psych class could ever teach you. You will literally walk out changed for the better.
Brother Whoolery is a professor who knows how to take concepts and open your eyes. He took the time to act as if he believed every single theory he taught (except for Rogers, you'll understand if you take the course), which helped increase understanding. I also recommend taking this with his Cultural Psychology class, because he tends to connect
Brother Whoolery really opens your eyes to new concepts here. The reading is excellent, and he teaches in such a way that does not sound condescending. He is a genuine, authentic person. You will not regret taking this course from him. Also, I recommend taking his personality class too, because he connects these two together often.
Solid teacher, great lectures. short quizzes for each chapter that you can take 3 times. most of your points will come from tests so pay attention in class and while reading and study.
Honestly I don't understand the hype. Professor Whoolery spent most of the first class talking about himself and his accomplishments. He also shared some negative feelings about church culture and school policy that I didn't appreciate. I thought professors at BYU-I were supposed to set an example by supporting policy, not by instilling contempt
This was among one of my favorite courses and professors! Brother Whoolery is very open, honest, and down to earth. His class is full of reading a variety of books that are very interesting and his lectures are full of the content from the readings and more. I would definitely take more classes from him. His class was very insightful and enjoyable
He spent the entire hour bashing the honor code and BYU-Idaho. He didn't get to know us at all, but chose to share his lengthy opinion about COVID-19. He lectured us on being obedient to COVID safety guidelines, but then proceeded to tell us that we don't need to obey the dress code. He likes to hear himself talk. I felt uncomfortable in his class
These classes are fascinating and he has opened my eyes to a lot of different ideas, esp in cultural psych. HOWEVER, I wouldn't recommend taking both classes at the same time. I agree, there are lots of connections but I feel like I don't get as much out of the reading bc I'm worried about finishing both outlines. Take cultural first
He was one of my favorite professors on campus. He challenges your current conceptions on virtually everything. So by looking at the reviews and seeing how he is terrible and instills contempt, just know that he challenges dogmatic thinking and irrational policies. There's a lot of reading, but the material in both classes is super interesting.
I LOVED this class. Only pysch111 that you can use a notecard on the test. Lectures are super insightful and entertaining. No homework aside from brief readings a short online quiz every week, and then studying for tests. My favorite teacher and class of the semester. Never a boring day in class. You learn a lot that applies to you and can help you
Whoolery is a national treasure that must be protected at all costs. The man walks on water, he is one of the kindest most Christlike people I have ever met. My mind was shattered and my whole world has been utterly rocked by his class every. day. YOU NEED TO TAKE CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY FROM WHOOLERY. Seriously it will change your life forever.
Prof Whoolery is amazing! Whatever you do don't leave byui without taking a class from him! His lectures changed they way I think and I always left class feeling very reflective and open. The only thing that I wish he didn't do was require outlines for the reading as sometimes it was hard to focus on the material but other than that he is great!
Professor Whoolery is one of the best professors and teachers I have ever had. He has an awesome perspective on psychology and I loved every single lecture in cultural psych and personality theories. I always came away feeling inspired and motivated. Love him and love his classes. Could not recommend enough. He really cares about his students.
He's awesome! Anyone who takes a class with him loves him. He tells a lot of stories about his life and his experience being a therapist and he applies them very well to what we're talking about. He asks for a lot of outlines for the chapters we read which is a lot of work but very helpful!
One of my favorite teachers Ive ever had. Hes so inspirational and an amazing teacher. He really cares about you as a person. You arent just a number to him. Hes beyond Intelligent and knows SOO much. First day of class he gave the class a speech about protecting victims of sexual assault and how important women are. Hes an amazing professor.
This guy is the best. I would take his class again just for fun. The books we read were really thought-provoking and this class changed my perspective on a lot of things. He's also the funniest professor I've ever had by far.
Professor Whoolery is actually amazing, he's hilarious and takes things in stride. Very willing to work with students and teaches good material. He encourages students to take their own perspective and theory and doesn't force his own opinion on others. Definitely worth taking his class.
He is AMAZING. He has forever changed the way I look and psychology. He's also a funny down to earth guy and will be your friend for life if you want. He has lived all over the world, so he has a lot of different and eye opening perspectives to share. I highly recommend everyone take his classes. It's worth it even if you're not a psych major.
Whoolery is amazing! I learned so much from this class and I could tell that he is really passionate about cultural psychology. I was able to integrate the ideas from this class into my everyday life. The homework is lots of reading and a few exams, but as long as you do the reading you shouldn't have a problem in this class!
He's incredible. You'll love coming to his class and wouldn't want to miss any of his classes because he's amazing. You'll gain new perspectives to see the world and be more compassionate and understanding
My favorite course I've taken, Great professor, very caring and understanding. Makes material engaging and prepares us for success.
He has quickly become my favourite professor. He is so passionate about what he teaches and is probably the most honest professor at BYU-I. He cares about his students and makes a point to recommend visiting his office hours - he has some awesome insights if you talk to him outside of class. There are tons of readings but they're incredible!
If you are going into counseling psychology I highly recommend him. Do not fall behind on readings! If you struggle to stay on top of them get a tutor/ reading buddy.
I loved his class so much. He's so funny and really cares about his students. It was nice to talk with him during office hours and he helped me understand concepts I was unsure of. The class load was a lot and I struggled but it was always a pleasure to attend class. Get a tutor if you're struggling to understand, or visit him!
By far the best Psychology Professor I've had. He is genuinely the most fascinating person I have ever met, once he opens his mouth you do not want him to stop, such a captivating speaker, and teacher. Assignments are clear, and Tests don't surprise you. Loads of work, but as close to perfect as it gets.
Whoolery is an engaging professor who brings passion and fresh perspectives to the material. The readings are thought-provoking, and with resources like Unstuck AI, the workload is manageable. Definitely take this class if you want to see the world differently.
