He talked about himself alot and how he spent so much time in europe. Hard tests, And if you go to him for extra help he will make you feel like you are really stupid. He does give extra credit though but he has to because he is such a bad teacher-
Alot of reading that has nothing to do with lectures. His class material is easy to understand, Tests are really hard bc of alot alot alot of outside reading and he treats you like you are in middle school and that you are not a person DONT BE LATE EITHER

He was a great professor. His lectures were interesting, his tests were easy if you had a 5th graders ability to read and he was easy to talk to about the course.
I had mr. zembo last year for two semesters and really enjoyed his teaching styles and i wish i could have him this semester again.
Took his summer course which was 3 weeks long. That was rough. He comes off very strict but he's not HORRIBLE. tough grader.
I loved this class! Prof. Zembo was difficult but very fair. He listened to all of my questions and treated me like an adult. He's also adorable!

i've had Zembo four different times throughout my 2 years at HVCC and i would have to say that he is my favorite history teacher; i would also have to say that my interests in history began to grow with each actual class that i had with him.
Zembo is definitely not a favorite teacher of mine. He was always telling our class how stupid we were if we all did bad on a quiz. He never took into consideration that maybe it was his teaching method. He's not helpful when you have questions and he's very quick to put you down.
Mr. Zembo is one of my favorite teachers at HVCC. Mind you he does require you to actually read the text book, but as long as you do that you will be fine. And he teaches some intersting facts about Am. His.... like Ben Franklin air bathing!
he was a great teacher and i found his class very interisting. he was extreemly helpfull, and if you actually sort of read the text you did great on the tests.
Seriously knows his history and his terrorism stuff... Prolly comes from being a British soldier in his recreation of the Revolutionary War.
he whined. i don't like teachers who whine.
One of the best I've had at HVCC. Really knows what he's talking about, and just a great guy too. I'm taking another class this semester just because he's teaching it.
He makes you work for your grade but his interest in the field really filters down to the student
Pr. Zembo was great! If you read the book, you did fine in his class. He actually makes history fun and I appreciated that. Unlike many of the teachers at HVCC he actually treats you like and adult.
Zembo is always very clear, and if anyone is paying the slightest attention, and has half a brain they'll get his jokes. Teachers that are passionate about the subject always seem to be the ones that hold everyone's interests. Zembo is one of the most interesting teachers i've ever had
he's a really cool guy, but seems to be very, very professional, which isnt really a bad thing.
awesome

zembo is the man, i took 4 classes with him at hudson valley and if you do what he tells you to do then you are going to get at least a b
Mr. Zembo is great. He is very entertaining and really knows what he teaches and is passionate about it. If you do the work you will do well in the course. I hope someday to take another one of his courses just to have him as a professor again.
Mr. Zembo should be given an award for his passion. He can teach any portion of HIST with grace and enthusiasm. Had I not taken his class, to this day I would still be misguided about Amer. HIST, something I am not please about. I appreciate his candor and, appreciate that he breaks the mold and teaches me truth about the country I would die for
mr. zembo's the cutest. he really knows what hes talking about. he has a really silly sense of humor, and the way he speaks keeps you interested.
Best hisotry teacher at HVCC very clear. Do the work and you will easily pass the class the tests are half from the notes and half from the reading

Very passionate, loves history. His tests are hard, but he warns you to be prepared. Makes class enjoyable, even at 8 in the morning.
very good teacher loves what he is doing
ask me.. its a difficult class. You HAVE to do the readings. Hes a VERY nice guy and i have never met anyone that knows as much as he does in history. Deff one of the top (if not the top) teachers in HV. Its a challeng but very informative. :]
Very hard tests. you have to do the readings. i'm not kidding! However, very good teacher who knows his stuff. go to him during his office hours if you are stuck on test stuff or something, he'll help you then.
Zembo is interesting, he loves history and tries to get you to love it too. He is fair and reasonable.
Mr. Zembo is by far one of my favorite professors, his passion about history really makes his lectures interesting. I took two of his classes, I found him to be very helpful, very nice, and yes, you must do the readings if you want to pass. There is a lot of reading.
Mr. Zembo is a really bad teacher. His tests are so hard to pass because they are on five chapters and you basically have to no everything. If you are not in the history club then he wont even pay attention to you. He is not the type of guy to help out his students and just doesnt care. The only good thing about the class is he cancelled a lot.
Great teacher and a great guy. Loves what he does and it rubs off.
if you dont read what he tells you to read, YOU WILL FAIL. all his tests are based straight from the reading!!!!!!!! if you dont like to read, dont take his class. he's a nice guy from what i can see so far...but READ GODDAMMNIT READ!!!!!
He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. He loves his work. I love going to his class.
If you are good at or enjoy taking tests, this class is definitely good for you. Final grade is completely based on three to four tests and a paper. Loves what he teachers and keeps everything extremely interesting. Tough grader, but awesome teacher. Don't do anything stupid!! :)
If you are good at or enjoy taking tests, this class is definitely good for you. Final grade is completely based on three to four tests and a paper. Loves what he teachers and keeps everything extremely interesting. Tough grader, but awesome teacher. Don't do anything stupid!! :)
I am taking his class right now. He is a tough grader but seems to be passionate about history. He also is very straight forward with his expectations. Overall a great teacher.
He is awsome, very funny and a good guy. He tells you what you need to get done to pass and what is expected. I however, did not read AT ALL! I took his WW2 class, and just paid attention. 2 tests and a paper, all I recieved B's on. Overall he is a great teacher.
had him for HIST 100 and WW2. hes great! knows his stuff and very enthusiastic! there are 3 multi choice tests and an essay. he offers extra credit which entails visiting museums and writing about them. Note that you'll def do A LOT of reading for his tests. overall if you read and pay attention ( which isn't hard b/c hes so livley), you'll do fine
hilarious man....his obsession with history is quite admirable....you have to read the book but he only has 2 or 3 tests...good guy overall
Charismatic, emboldened speaker. Difficult class but well worth it.
This guy is histarical. I will never take another history class at hudson valley unless he teaches it.
Love this teacher. He's funny, nice and fair. He's clear and easy to understand. He grades tough, but if you do the work you can definately do it. Nicest preffessor ever, definately my #1 or 2 proffessor.
great
Good teacher. Gives the hardest multiple choice & true/false tests I have ever encountered. No research paper. Gave a final exemption to everyone with an A. Drops lowest test score.
This man has turned my life around. His whitty stories and laugh out loud jokes inspired me throughout the semester. I was about to drop out of school and this man showed me the way. Zembo- i love you man.
domminate class
Mr. Zembo is passionate about the subject and conveys the material in and entertaining and clear way. He is strict in class about expectations and takes no bs. 50 percent of the material you will be tested on is from the book and the other 50% is from lecture. You will have to earn your A. That being said I always looked forward to going.
Great class!
loved him
I can't think of enough positive things to say about this man, he really makes history come to life in the classroom. His passion for the topic is contagious!!!
You will NEED to read the book in order to do well on his tests, which are hard but he drops one out of 2 and his final is hard too, but i some how ended up with a B, i think it was because of the final paper, you had to go to 4 musuems and write what you liked or disliked about it. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES
EXTREMELY knowledgeable in regards to WWII. I took it for a gen ed requirement. More work than I expected but I enjoyed the class. Difficult for a non history major. Two tests and a 10 page paper about any WWII topic. Makes class interesting though.
awsome teacher! loves teaching this subject which makes it very interesting in class. Tests are hard and this course requires a lot of reading the textbook outside of class. The final paper is very different, he has you go to 4 museums and you write a responce to each. Although the tests are harder hes a great teacher !
Kind of boring if you are interested in actual History. He never talks about ancient history, he skips right in to Greek and Roman eras. His main focus is military history which ends up being his main focus throughout the course. Great for those students looking to coast through the course.
Western Civ. I was such a boring class, and Mr. Zembo did not help at all. He does not make the material easy to understand, or at all interesting. He spends most of his time talking about how he worked in Greece for a while and loves traveling there. I highly suggest NOT taking his class.
A great professor who is very passionate about what he teaches which makes class interesting and fun at times!! Definitely read the book and take simple notes, study all notes and should get an A. Easy final project to make up for difficult tests!
To have someone who really cares about what they are teaching you and brings passion to history is invaluable. There is a good probability you will have to TRY a little outside of the classroom; but welcome to college. Mr. Zembo really teaches you things that are deeper than any text book will.
He is awesome!! No HW, three-four major tests, easy final project, easy final exam. He keeps history interesting. British perspective of the American Revolution. Random yelling occurs in class HA HA HA. Try not to miss class. Notes and book reading are crutial to pass the tests. I'm going to take more of his classes in the future.
The class takes A LOT of work, but if you are willing to do it, I suggest that you take this class with him. He has a lot of knowledge of Military History, which makes the class REALLY interesting. He treats you like an adult and answers any questions that you may have about the reading or his lectures. There is a 10-12 page paper requirement, so if you don't like doing research, don't take the class. And also be sure to do the reading, as a lot of the test questions come from it.
This is the greatest history professor that I have ever had. I highly, highly recommend him, especially if you love history and especially if you love the WWII. If you don't already love history prior to taking this class than you will hate it. There is a lot of reading, a lot of information and you HAVE to show up for class.
This is one of the greatest professors. The thing is you have to show up for class. If you do that your set.
i really enjoy this class show up do the work and you should not have a problem
I took both Western civ 1 and american history. If you are a history major then Zembo is perfect for you!! You MUST show up and READ the textbook!! If you can do this, you should be fine. Projects are different, you are required to visit at least 4 different museums. If you have no time/money/transportation to do this, then don't bother.
Show up to class, do the reading, and you will be fine. He is quite comical. He will bring out the best of you. So be prepared to read. A little challenging to anyone not particularly interested in History, BUT he has a positive attitude, and is very cool. Definitely would take his class again.
I had him for American History and World War II. You need to really like history because NEED to read the text book for the tests. If you do your work and the reading you'll do fine. He challenges you to do your best. he's a really great guy and is really nice. His lectures are like stories. American history with him was fun he made it interesting.
Extremely tough professor but a very rewarding class if you put through the hard work in order to receive a good grade. The best class I've ever taken on campus was with him because he made history so interesting. He goes more in depth into history than a mere textbook ever could. Highly recommend if you're prepared to put forth the effort.
He's very dedicated and his class is never boring, however his grading is very tough. I liked him a lot, but if you do not do the reading, you will not pass his class, also dont ever be late or miss a class.
Best teacher I've had in College. I have attended 4 undergraduate colleges, one in the Netherlands, SUNY Binghamton, and SUNY Buffalo, and this guy is the best so far. Unbelievably good
honestly, i expected to read awful reviews and am surprised by the amount of positive things everyone had to say. i couldn't help but fall asleep in almost every class. this section would be great for a history major, but if you have no interest in the topic...do not take western civ, especially, with him!
Awesome teacher! He's dedicated to each subject and he really knows his stuff. He always cracks jokes and tells fun stories relating to the topic. He skips around a lot. As long as you read the textbook along with what he covers in class you're guaranteed at least a B.
I was already interested in World War II history but Professor Zembo made it that much more interesting. The book wasn't a bad read either, it was easy and interesting. His lectures are great, he's engaging and passionate about what he's teaching! He's made this subject his passion so you know its a great class. Definitely recommend this teacher.
I had prof. Zembo for Western Civ. He was a really nice guy and was hilarious, but the class was sooo hard and boring. You never had homework, but the class was strictly lecture, so copying down notes got challenging. If you're good at history, I'd take it with him, but if you aren't, then I wouldn't. It's hard.
I do my reading and I still fail his quizzes and tests. His tests are so hard they're almost impossible. They're not just based on the text, you really have to understand and deeply analyze the text in order to pass the tests. I found this really hard. He's also somewhat harsh at grading writing assignments. A little vague in what he expects
This class is hard and the least bit interesting. He teaches as if were all suppose to relate to what living in the past was like, rather then taking it slow and explaining it thoroughly. Don't get me wrong, he's a good guy, I just don't recommend the class if you aren't a person who wants to live and breath history.
I always find myself laughing in class. I have him right now and I'm not doing too bad. You just have to stay caught up on the reading and listen to his lectures. I needed help with reading the textbook in the beginning and he really helped me out with some tips! He's a good guy!
Really difficult class but worth it!
I have never been good at history because I have the memory of a sieve, but this guy actually made the class very enjoyable and interesting! Best teacher I've ever had, hands down. Very self-deprecating about his class, very tough on cheaters. Totally worth taking.
Course grade is based off of 4 tests and 1 project- no homework besides a ton of reading. Very cool guy with interesting lectures but the lectures have almost nothing to do with the material on the tests. In order to pass the tests you must read. I skipped a lot of class and managed to get a B in the class due to a 100 on the big semester project.
Great teacher if you're interested in western civ, he's very passionate about what he's teaching and knows a lot about it so he's lectures are always very exciting for him.
I would recommend Professor Zembo's class to anyone who wants to learn and is willing to do some work. Mr. Zembo is hilarious and great and making history interesting and relatable. He is very clear about exactly what you need to get a good grade in his class - if you do everything he says, you will get a good grade.
Fantastic professor. Not "easy" but superb if you are into the subject. I had him for "History of WWII" and learned more than I ever thought I would. His explanations about the "Final Solution" were the best I've ever experienced. The lead up to the way that propaganda was used was terrifically intense. Probably one of the best professors I've had.
Took an online class instructed by Zembo. He assigns a lot of videos, a lot of reading, and has extensive lectures. He grades harshly on discussion posts and there is a lot of information necessary to get a good grade on them.
Mr. Zembo's class was probably my favorite. Although his tests are tough and you have to do your part + read the text, it's all worth it. He somehow manages to explain and talk about history so well it's like watching a movie. A passionate teacher for history is definitely a must. He gives great life advice & doesn't fail to set you up for success.
Best professor I have had on HVCC campus. Even though I already have a passion for learning history, he made me appreciate the subject on a whole new level. If you dedicate some time to reading and studying, this class is definitely for you!
I took his Western Civ class online and I wish I had taken it in person. Online it was VERY difficult, and A LOT of work. Assigns a LOT of reading per week, and each week will have hours of videos to watch. I didn't think the grading made much sense. He also tended to "lose" a lot of emails that I sent him which was also very frustrating.
Professor Zembo was honestly one of the best teachers I ever had. He's a real dude, everything he talks about he's personally interested and invested in. he's passionate and hilarious and he treats everyone with the same respect he commands. I've taken two courses with him now and i wouldn't hesitate to take a third.
I can say I've had awesome history teachers all the way up to college. He makes history a lot of fun. In his lectures he ties it all together into more of a story than just reading straight from the book. He ties historic events to events similar to that in the present. He is a great guy outside of class and will help you if you put the effort in.
Mr zembo is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've ever met. It's clear he really loves history and has a passion for it and that is brought through in his class. He only grades you on tests and one project and his tests are pretty difficult but if you go to the lectures and pay attention and read you should pass. Overall great professor
I took his Western Civ class online, and he seemed very unorganized, kept losing the work that I would email him, and then when it comes to the final grade, I calculated my grade to be a B given the "points system" he uses and he told me I had a C and the point meant nothing! A TONNN of reading and boring material. Hated this class. Glad its over!
Easy going guy, cares about his students and is very knowledgeable. My only gripe is that he often will talk about his political views which get kind of annoying and generally made me want to leave at some points. Listen, I get that you're a liberal and don't want to fully admit it, can we learn about Andrew Jackson now?
Hands down the best, most passionate professor I have had at HVCC. Pretty tough course, lots of reading, but he's so knowledgeable and interested in the topic I love listening to him. Read the books. The tests are more on the reading than the lecture.
Mr. Zembo has made me love history! He is such a fantastic teacher and shares his passion of history with all of his students. He literally brings the past alive during his lectures, and there is never a dull moment. I look forward to going to class everyday
Mr Zembo was an ok professor. Hes very lecture heavy in his classes. I personally thought the final project (visit 4 museums) was awful. Its not a class one should take if they have a job or are busy outside of class. He grades you based on your tests and the project. You HAVE to read in order to pass. overall, decent guy, not my favorite professor
Mr. Zembo knows his stuff, but his lectures are all over the place. Dont expect to take notes that make sense later. The questions to the test are based on the textbook.( which is extremely bland) If your just looking to take this class as an elective, I wouldnt recommend. Cool guy though!
Very exciting class to be in. Makes you work hard but I believe it's worth it because he has first hand knowledge of what he teaches, and is very animated when lecturing. Easy extra credit op. Easy to focus on his lectures, is funny and has interesting knowledge. Even though the work was hard and tests were difficult, would highly recommend.
One of the professors at HVCC (for history at least) One of the only classes were I looked forward to the lecture. He is so much better in person so I don't recommend taking him online. half of test material is in class, and the other in the textbook reading. 25% of the grade is 4 easy papers on museum visits. (you need time outside of class)
One of the best HIST prof. from Hvcc. Really funny guy. If you do what he tell you to do it then it isn't that hard!!
He's a guy who speaks his mind and doesn't hold anything back, whether it's about history or current events, and he manages to tie those together in his lectures. Open to student discussion. Watched some real neat docs, and was offered extra credit for seeing The Life of Brian or Gladiator. You'll need free time for the final (visit 4 museums!)
Great professor, really brings the class to life and makes you want to come in and hear him lecture. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and really knows his history. Only negative would be the amount of reading but he actually has you get interesting books about the subject instead of a $100 text book. Overall great professor!
Online class is a lot of work. He expects essays, basically, for the 20 pt discussion posts, the book & films are useless for some questions. The films are three-four hours long sometimes, textbook is a long read and the quizzes are ridiculous and very nit-picky. Don't read to get the gist, read to recall the small details. Wouldn't recommend.
Pro. Zembo is the funniest professor I ever had, he such a good professor & teaches a lot of information in small amount of time, he explain information a lot and answer questions when asked. the book reading is little to much so you can just skip some chapters and watch videos on youtube, the test are pretty simple, recommend this professor 100%.
Mr. Zembo is the best teacher I ever had. I really like history and Mr. Zembo seemed to bring it to life every lecture. I've never really had a teacher as passionate about his work as Mr. Zembo. Tests are take home but they are very difficult. If you do the reading you will be fine.
Really rude to say the least. Not uncommon for more then two classes to go by before he mentions that he doesn't need this job and his wife makes all the money. Lectures are way too fast and doesn't give a clear idea of what to take down for notes. 4 museums project is a joke. Just a mean person when its all said and done, avoid at all costs.
There is a DB every week (towards the end there were 3 due within days of each other), a quiz every week and a final exam. The DB's are basically short papers, and he's a tough grader on them. Instead of lectures he requires 3-4 45+minute youtube videos. Which is great if you don't have to work a full time job. Overall learned a lot.
History has always been my least favorite subject, but Zembo was terrific. He's passionate about history and understands students. He definitely knows how to keep your attention during lecture (beware of random yelling or bangs) and encourages discussion. His online class was a bit more work, but he offered extra credit and was very understanding
Mr. Zembo was truly an amazing professor. Would absolutely tell anyone taking HIS 101 to take it with him. Utilize office hours, it really helps when you have any questions, he is super approachable!
He assigns 18 hours of classwork/week. This is 3-4 hour video clips, writing an essay, AND assigning roughly 60 dense textbook pgs per week. The test questions are not clear. Oh and he offers 4 points of extra credit towards our 900 total, we have to visit 4 museums and write a 2-page paper on each of them. He responds to emails like Im 12.
Hardest class Ive ever taken. His lectures are impossible to follow, as he will ramble scream and yell rather then actually lecture us. The tests are extremely hard, even if you read. He is often pretty rude too, not sure how everyone else views him as friendly. The museums project is inconvenient, but really boosts your grade and is pretty easy.
Took 8 week sprint course. The assignments for this one class seemed never endingyes its more work in less time, but 9-10 hours of videos, 60-70 textbook pages, an essay and a test with random questions each week was a lot. Overall decent class though. Didnt see the professor as it was all online but he seemed nice through email.
If you're taking this course to fulfill a requirement DON'T! It's a level 100 class, but requires a lot of work. He is obsessed with war, his questions are vague, and he is a tough grader. His ego is a little big for being an adjunct professor at a community college. I have had good history teachers in the past, but I despise this class.
Took this class in 2019, unfortunately, due to Covid the class went online I was really looking forward to finishing the class the way it was supposed to be. Mr. Zembo was one of my favorite profs at HVCC.
He doesn't give feedback on discussion posts, and he assigns low-quality docs to watch as lectures (and usually a lot of them, too). He's nice and wants students to have fun with his class but doesn't realize that we have other classes besides his. You can get a good grade by doing the work but be warned there is a LOT of it.
Zembo himself is really nice. He genuinely cares about the subject and I feel like I probably would have learned more if he was doing lectures instead of an online class. The downside is that there is soooo much homework. His discussion boards are insane, they were the hardest assignments I had this semester.
The work isn't hard its just SO MUCH. each week was minimum 5 hours of videos and 2 chapters to read. You really need to watch the videos to answer the ridiculous amount of discussion board questions. He grades tough on the discussion board, so make sure answer EVERY question on there, with detail. Most of mine are 2 pages long.
Great guy, and great teacher. He actually talks to you unlike most who like to have the internet teach for them. Just make sure to start reading textbook chapters early in the week so by Sunday you're ready for his quiz.
I learned so much in this class. The workload can seem like a lot, but the answers are directly in the videos he posts. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and genuinely wants his students to get good grades. Overall, a great professor, and I would 100% take his class again!
He is one of the best professors I have had that being said it is a ton of work. I took his online class and you will have to read 50 pages up to 5 hours of videos write a DB which is almost a mini paper and take a test. He responds really quickly to emails and is a nice grader and gives opportunity for extra credit.
Great professor, took him for history of WW2. Homework is hard, only required to make one discussion post(essay) based off videos(long videos) per week along with a small quiz sometimes. Don't worry about doing the readings, most of the info is in the videos for the DB. People that are complaining seem to be unmotivated. Have to try for an A
Can't remember what grade I got but it doesn't even matter. This professor is the entire reason why I went on to get my bachelor's in history. Just a superb lecturer, storyteller and historian. I cannot recommend him enough to people who are interested in history. He is, hands down, the best history professor I've ever had. 10/10!
I really enjoyed this course and hes very understanding. You're required to watch about 3-4 hours of documentary footage a week, so its easier for those who enjoy history docs. You're also assigned to read about 5 books, you can pass without reading them, however, to get a good grade they're needed. Attendance isnt required, he just reviews content
Matt Zembo was a great professor. He's super responsive and friendly over email. His classes do have a pretty heavy workload, so time management is essential to passing his classes. For American History II, I typically had about 15 hours of work a week, I was taking 6-week classes though.
Easily one of the best professors i have ever had, most likely the best at the entire college.
Took History of WW2 as a hybrid (1 hour in-person once a week) and the in-class meeting was optional and used as a weekly review of the material covered. The weekly DBQs I found to be unusually long. Quizzes were easy. Prof. Zembo truly cares and likes what he teaches which makes him a good teacher albeit the workload is big for a 100-level class.
Love his lecture, but since I had him for hybrid, the amount of homework was awful. Hours of reading and videos along with more hours to respond to many questions on the media.
Assigns many full length movies and reading each week. Very specific about citations and how the work is done and there is a lot. No syllabus to go by, overall rude and unprofessional. I would absolutely not recommend taking any classes with him. Shocked at the high reviews here.
Be prepared for a lot of work, which isn't a bad thing on it's own but there is little to accompany books and movies. I don't feel that I have been "taught" anything at all. Weekly writing assignment is graded in a seemingly arbitrary manner, with absolutely no feedback given outside of a numerical grade. Professor is a poor communicator.
I am in western civ 1. His attendance is taken by completing discussion board post that are very heavy with many questions to answer and also completing the weeks quiz. His lectures are not helpful to complete the quizzes each week. He comes off as rude. Long videos to watch. The work is manageable. They should list his course as hybrid. But its not
