Professor Hess isn't bad. I constantly see people complaining that he just reads off the slides and that lecture is boring. He might not be the best teacher but he's also not bad, just your average teacher. Lectures can feel long but the good thing is that he provides the lecture notes. The midterm isn't bad either (do the study guides!)
Just no. He's a nice person but horrible professor. Takes slide material word-for-word from book and just reads the slides. He could never answer questions in class, saying either "Check your book" or "I don't know". Pretty much the only reason people came to class is because of the clicker questions. I did good because I taught myself.
ABI 102 was my favorite class in fall and sadly Dr. Hess made this class so bad that I dreaded going to class every day. Pop quizzes almost every day and every question is worth 1% of your grade. Only 1 midterm and a final and the final was ridiculously hard and barely related to lecture (and was written by the TAs!). Get ready to teach yourself.
He just reads the slide lectures and it's even hard to hear. Even though I am satisfied with my grade, I feel like I learned nothing. Try to avoid his class..
Only reason I got an A was bc I taught myself the material through youtube & review questions. The 1 midterm (worth 30%) was easy because the TA said it was all review questions, so you just had to memorize those. The final (40%) was harder because it wasn't review questions; Hess is an AWFUL teacher; and there was no practice Q's given 4 the fina
This class was incredibly easy. If you try a little you will get an A.
Dr. Hess does not care at all about this class. He puts no effort into prepping lectures, and cannot answer questions well. He does not work with the ABI 102 professor to make sure he covers the appropriate material. Be prepared to read the textbook and teach yourself. Dr. Hess is an extremely disappointing professor.
Yoooooo! I'm in this class right now writing this post instead of paying attention to the lecture. Woke up 8AM everyday just to have this guy sing me back to sleep. Monotone and boring. Probly easy A, avoid unless you want to be sung a lullaby everyday by him.
Currently studying for MT1 without any study material other than 6 chapters to read from the textbook, a lot of them he never covered. Going to class at 8am is a waste of time because it's so boring you'd fall asleep, and you don't learn anything, but you have to go anyway because he gives clicker quizzes every lecture. Avoid if possible.
He is a tough professor, but if you keep up with the material that builds up daily, it won't be as overwhelming when it comes to midterms
Worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't even ask if the class has any questions because he won't know how to answer them and just tells you to go by the book. Doesn't emphasize what you should know for the midterm because "ideally you should know everything in the book" according to him.
This professor is absolutely terrible. Minimal effort is put into teaching. Obviously has no passion for this position and should be transferred to another. Commonly acts in ways that are unfair, unprofessional, and blatantly uninterested in the welfare of his students. Don't ask for help from him as his only response is "read the book." 0/10 stars
He is not a good teacher. All his slides are basically from the book, yet more confusing. He wants you to know everything. To pass his class get the notes from course hero as that is his test bank.
1) read the book 2) google ABI Clicker questions to find quizlet 3) course hero test questions 4) good luck
Terrible teacher. He copies and pastes almost everything in the book onto his lecture slides (then switches around some words so sometimes there's wrong info). He reads directly from the slides. His exams don't match his lectures or the book. He doesn't test on the concepts, but rather on the small details. He literally said "just know everything".
Avoid at all costs. Wait another year to take the class, change majors, whatever it takes. When you ask him what to focus on for the exams, he will literally tell you to know everything in the textbook. If by some miracle he tells you he'll emphasize a certain topic on an exam, it's probably a lie and you should study everything BUT that topic.
currently in this class but so far, he has been a really good and accommodating teacher. He takes recommendations and he's doing a lot to become a better teacher! The organization has been good so far!
I can tell Dr. Hess is really trying to change his teaching style and be more aware of how his students feel about the material. He's a nice guy and despite what the other comments say, i feel like im learning from him.
Dr. Hess is definitely trying really hard to change his teaching style and you can tell that his students appreciate what he's doing. He asks for a lot of feedback and genuinely cares about us. He makes sure everyone understands the material before moving on. Love him!
Dr. Hess has improved greatly as a professor. He is clear in what he wants from students and is very open to feedback. He gives out all his powerpoint and his lectures are recorded. His clicker questions are helpful and relate to exam questions.
As others have said, Professor Hess is really responsive to feedback and he does seem like he cares. I do have issues with how the lectures are a bit too "read directly off the slides". Still, I like how the final isn't 50% of the class grade point-wise, it is just another midterm. Tests are based heavily on study guides so definitely do those.
It's obvious to me Dr. Hess has changed many aspects of his class from previous quarters. This is why I feel he does care about the class. For my class, if you studied the material along with the study guides you were pretty much guaranteed to do well on the exams. Go to his office hours and he will clarify what he wants you to know for tests.
I've heard that his class was super hard before, but he changed his teaching style this quarter a lot. He's very clear on what he wants you to memorize and will ask for feedback every week. The exams were easy as long as you studied the study guides. You might want to read the book to understand the material better, at least that's what I did.
Its very obtainable to get a high grade in his class, he has a predetermined curve, offers extra credit and has easy participation clicker questions. He's a very nice professor, I enjoyed his class. Yes, he read off his slides but he does take into account student feedback.
Hes a good guy. People give him a hard time for not being a good biochem professor, well guess what people, hes a microbiologist. Talk to him about his research (which happens to be extremely interesting) and he opens up. If he stays with the same class style just review the study guides and come to class for the free points. Good class.
I really enjoyed Professor Hess. If you ask him a question and he answers back in a question then hes already answered prior-hes trying to help you think about it to remember 2nd time around. Do the study guides! Show him youre thinking, take advantage of discussion on Canvas, and use his slides as flash cards. Definitely dont wait to study!
How to get an A: 1. Show up to class 2. Pay attention enough to get the clicker points correct 3. Go home and watch the lecture videos with the speed set to 1.2 and the volume set on high (he mumbles and talks slow in class, puts you to sleep) 4. Take note of info he wants you to know 5. Review slides before test 6. Ace the midterms
Hess changed the course setup this quarter and he might for the next one. Final is 40% of the grade and daily clicker questions are part of your grade. I thought his slides were disorganized and incredibly dense. I really recommend watching his review sessions before an exam and studying the review session slides. Go to class for clickers!
Attendance is basically mandatory, since he does iclicker points and they count towards your grade. Your grade relies heavily on the midterms, so get those iclicker questions right. He often mumbles, so youre gonna have to spend a lot of time re watching his lecture videos to get what he says.
Anybody from 2019 who complains is salty they can no longer get an easy A to go go vet school. People complain for the worst reasons - he does not NEED to provide a practice test, so dont complain when he doesnt give a key. Other profs do this too. Yes, the final had discussion questions, but readings were assgined (I didnt read them either).
The only thing I have to say is memorize the power point slides word for word. I spent so much time learning and understanding complicated pathways for him to ask simple factual type questions. His powerpoints are also very unorganized, so good luck piecing them together. I was able to pass with an A, but still a very annoying class to study for.
Lectures straight from the book, so read the book if confused. Lectures are sometimes disorganized because it flips from topic to topic. Doesn't really emphasize things that he says will be important on the tests. But the tests are very easy, surface level material. Tests focus on discussion alot! Clickers are 10% of grade. asks for feedback
Graded clicker questions, lectures are straight from the textbook, and he talks really slow with voice that is hard to pay attention to. Exams are easy--heard that they were used to be from test bank but not anymore--but discussions are part of exam questions. Lectures don't help learning at all so read textbook. I miss ABI 102
Because each exam covers so many slides, just study his review session powerpoints. They literally cover 85% of the material in the exams. He talks slow but just rewatch the lecture videos on 2X speed. Pay attention to discussion materials. Not bad of a class as long as you know how to study smartly.
He is not a good lecturer. His lectures are all over the place. He jumps back and forth and confuses words because of his accent making it very hard to follow him. He mumbles and trails off. The first midterm isnt to bad but then he flips a switch and makes the second midterm nearly impossible. Miss 1 clicker and your grade drops. Good luck.
The lectures are boring and very disorganized. He also does not seem to know the material very well. He reads off the slides (material copied from the book) and does not contribute anything from his own knowledge. Exam 2 was unfairly hard. Gives 3 clicker questions/class, miss 1 question - overall grade drops by 1-2%. Not the nicest person either.
First midterm was not the worst, but second midterm backhanded us all in the face with all the short answer. Lecture slides pre and post midterm 2 are disorganized and confusing to piece together, especially with the pathways you have to know. He gives roundabout answers to questions, so OH aren't too helpful. Good luck, you're going to need it.
However, overall as a professor, he wasn't the greatest. Using the book helped more than his lectures. His lecture slides confused me a lot and at some points they were unclear. However, he improved a lot over the quarter, trying to improve based on student reviews and I appreciated that a lot thus why I gave him a four.
He's not a bad prof. It's biochem. It's going to be difficult. I studied by rewatching lectures after class every day and making flashcards and did fine. I actually had a 95 going to the final, but then ended up with a B after it. I thought the final was harder than the midterms, but I could've studied more. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
First exam is just review material from first part of abi102, he curved the second midterm and it wasn't even that bad. All the material you need to know will be on the slides, you don't have to try to understand the gritty details because he tests on surface level material. 30 clicker pts but you can make up any points you missed on the last week.
Really cares about students and tries to be as helpful as possible. Tests are super easy and surface level. Chances for extra credit. Bit of a dry lecturer.
I'm not sure why everyone complains about Dr. Hess and ABI 103 being difficult, I think he is an amazing professor and the class was pretty manageable. Dr. Hess clearly tries every week to change his teaching style and help out his students. Lectures are a little dry to focus, but reading the textbook really helped me out. Love Dr. Hess!
I really think Dr. Hess deserves a better rating. I was so worried for this class, but it ended up being very doable as long as you study his lecture slides and understand concepts. Daily quizzes w/ unlimited attempts and weekly assignments (quiz basically, but 1 attempt). Also gives E/C. No midterms/final. Very caring professor without a doubt! :)
Dr. Hess is an amazing professor but the class is a LOT of work. It was easy to fall behind and difficult to make points up, but honestly had it been my only class it wouldn't have been too bad. Don't let the first few easy weeks fool you!! The middle of the class becomes much, much more complex so stay on top of lectures, notes, and studying.
Very boring lectures, but he is open to feedback. Do the wiley plus questions or search for practice sets on quizlet. This class starts out easy as review but ramps up fast so be ready! He basically only reads off the slides so you don't even really need to watch the lectures if you just memorize the slides.
Dr. Hess adjusted the course to an online format in a way that is very considerate to students. Grade based on non-cumulative daily and weekly quizzes. Lectures could be very dry but discussions were always really interesting.
Dr. Hess was great, he adjusted his class to meet the students' needs during COVID-19. The time he gave for weekly assignments was pretty limited, but he gives an extra credit question at the end. You'll be fine if you memorize the slides. He gives daily quizzes that you can take as many times as you need, so be sure not to skip them..(free points)
Very boring and predictable lectures. I felt like I wasnt learning anything every time I left lecture. He gives so much Information by reading off like a million slides for each day. Too much information and no connection in the subjects he teaches or the way he does it. He seems like a great person but I dont think he should teach this class.
No midterms to prep for the final. The homeworks, which there are very few of, are difficult. The final basically determines your grade and there is so much material. Prof Hess is nice, but is simply not a great lecturer. The structure of this class makes it almost impossible to get an A.
All I can say is bestie what the heck
The structure of this course was so so bad.
If you came from M'ski be in for a rude awakening. Nice guy, but the lectures were dull, non-interactive, had too much material. Review quizzes only had 4-5 questions which wasn't representative of all we learned. No midterms to gauge how we'd do for final. TA reviews were regurgitations of lecture slides and not interactive at all.
Dr. Hess is an awful professor. He gives an excessive amount of material (over 1000 slides) and expects us to learn it all without having any midterms. He doesn't make himself accessible outside of class. The class uses Piazza but the TAs take awhile to answer them and sometime chose what questions they want to answer. Take during the spring w Pety
Dr. Hess is not a good professor. He has over 1000 slides of information, during the final review session he mentioned topics that we should focus more for the final exam but not even 1 question about those topics. His class is very hard to follow because there is no structure and he jumps from topic back and forth.
Lectures are very information heavy, and Dr. Hess is not the most entertaining lecturer. However, the homework and review quizzes prepare you well for the final exam. As long as you stay on top of the material each week, you will be fine!
All I can say is you better hope for a phat curve.
Hess takes textbook material and copies and pastes it into his lecture slides then takes out the transition words so his slides don't make sense. Teaching is NOT his forte. The info is hard to memorize because he just spits facts out, and does not give a general overview to grasp material. He doesn't set students up for success.
All I can say is the average for the final exam was worth 45% of our grade and the average was 63.7%. He did NOT curve. Good luck bestie
Don't take the class. No curve for a 64% final, which worth 45% of grade. No extra credits being offered as well. LOT OF CONTENT and basically just self-learning for the whole quarter.
This class is impossible. Change your major or be prepared to cry. You want to go to vet school? Say goodbye to that dream. There are biweekly homework’s that you have to ace because the final WILL drop you a whole letter grade. Save your tears for your mom because he doesn’t care.
The class structure was crazy. 55% quizzes, 45% final. He cares about his students but he has ridiculously high expectations from us. Taking his class is VERY stressful, but it wasn't impossible. I only did good because I only had 2 classes to worry about. Prepare to spend A LOT of time studying and his hw assignments are a BIG help for the final
Avoid taking this class with Hess if you can or it’ll destroy your GPA. Boring lectures, terrible class structure. Most of this class was self-learning and there are online quizzes and homeworks worth 55%. No midterms and one final worth 45%. I’ve never struggled more in a class like this one.
His lectures were dense, unorganized, and he read off the screen. He ignored students concerns and petitions on switching testing styles(online to in person) for our 45% final. He set the class up to catch cheaters, and reported TONS of students. I wasn’t one but i find that incredibly cruel
Reading textbook was crucial for this class. He rearranged the textbook info on his slides to the point where you could misunderstand. Didn’t curve when average was low. Had no midterm for us to gauge how well we were doing. Seems like other quarters were manageable to get a good grade but this quarter wasn’t! Save your gpa by not taking him!!!
Each lecture had 70-80 slides of dense material, and on the homeworks (aka timed, closed book quizzes) he'd ask about tiny, obscure details. The final was 45% of our grade and he refused to post a key for the practice finals. Average for the final was 64% and he didn't curve. This was the most stressed I've ever been over a class.
A horrible professor that doesnt know how to teach. You will learn nothing out of his lectures. Final exam 45% of the grade and did not help us prepare for it. He also reported a lot of people to SJA AT THE END OF THE QUARTER. Not telling them why or giving them time to gather evidence as to why they were innocent. Just don't take his class.
Awful!! Do not take it if possible. Would ask about tiny details, with each lecture having 80-100 slides. The final was 45% of our grade, without any midterms to gauge how we were doing in the class or any practice. Doesn't know how to teach, so you have to learn through closed note homework that is 55% of your grade.
Hess is actually a very caring, nice person. If you go to OH, you'll see that. Constantly gauges his pace in lecture and slows down if need be. Most ppl fell behind because they took no midterms as reason to not keep up with material. He spreads a concept over many slides and thats why the # SEEMS excessive. STAY ON TOP of material, you'll be good!
Poor representation of the professors of Davis. He welcomed feedback but seemed offended by criticism. We had one exam that was 45% of our grade and we were provided little to no expectation of what the exam would be like. When reaching out to Dr. Hess he simply disregarded everyone's concerns and refused to change the structure of the class. AVOID
I'm In therapy because of this class
For ANS 132, FQ 22. Lab work was really boring. A few open note quizzes and a final paper, but it's a pathetically easy A if you can grind it out. No memorization. Use the example paper in the binder for help and go to writing workshops for additional questions. TA was extremely helpful. Much kinder grading in ANS 132 compared to ABI 103 lol.
He's a competent enough lecturer, but his tests rely on memorizing factoids from his lectures rather than applying the material in a way that would demonstrate understanding of it. Tests are somewhat easy because of this, but you'd better hope you remembered the right things or you're screwed.
Poor lecturer because he was unclear/never actually explains things, never directly answers students' questions, SJA trigger-happy, super inconsistent with class format every quarter, says he's open to feedback but challenges that feedback and disregards it
This professor is not very good at lecturing. He stumbles a lot. I've started to hate the word "basically" since he used it so often. His exam is not based on the materials. Expect to be drawing molecules during the exam like the heme group and the DNA nucleotides. I honestly thought he was joking... it's not a joke. Only grades depend on the exam
Highly not recommended.... To give you a brief overview on what to expect in this second part of biochem, he expects you to remember super complicated biological pathways with enzymes, proteins and fat structures involved. Not only that but you need to KNOW HOW TO DRAW THEM on the exam......just dont take this class.
Hess reads off his slides for the entirety of lecture, and he expects you to learn a million concepts. Midterm questions don't test your knowledge, just how well you memorized random facts. Your entire grade is based off 2 midterms and the final. Stay on top of lectures and you'll probably pass.
Where do I even start. I should have paid attention to the other reviews and just dropped the course when I could but I really thought I could handle it. Each lecture is over 100 slides long and he's not clear about what we need to know. Grade is based off 2 midterms and final (which is worth 40% of your grade btw). Just STAY AWAY!
This class is not enjoyable whatsoever. 2 hour lectures have 120 slides. Slides are very full of pathways you must memorize, lots of text, and molecules you need to know how to draw. Grade is 100% based on 2 midterms and the final.
Class is dense and lots of packed material. He'll spend a lot of time focusing on specific things in lecture and tell you it's important. So you'll end up studying for what's "important" and it won't show up on the exam. Exam is tested on tiny details, not overall concepts. Also have to memorize many pathways and molecule structures
Insane grading weights and the exams do not align with what was emphasized in class, your only hope is to memorize all 1488 slides (yes I counted) of chem pathways and random facts in time.
Hess seems like he would be a nice guy outside of the classroom but overall he put little effort into helping his students do well in his class. No Hw, barely if any in class practice, just pure 2 hour monotone lectures and very difficult exams. I have taken chemistry classes before and done well but this one was something else.
i have nothing good to say about this professor. our entire grade was based on 2 midterms and the final, making it virtually impossible to save your grade with one mistake. the teacher reads directly from the slides, making lectures practically worthless. just keep reviewing the slides and try your best to stay on top of the material.
Class is graded by two midterms and a final; the tests are never what he tells you to study... I spent so much time studying only to be clueless on the tests. The curve is what saved me, he changed grade cut-offs twice during the quarter. It is passable, but don't expect a good grade in this class unless you want to dedicate your whole life to it.
I was prepared to have this class stain my record. The lecturers were so hard to sit through, the audio was terrible for in-person, and the lecture captured so it was super difficult to listen to. His lectures were pretty much just reading off the slides. Exams are literally your grades, so no cushion if you did average or bad on one exam.
I feel like Hess gets a lot of hate but. This IS a hard class. Biochem...like you expect an A for showing up? You're going to have to put in work, read the slides to study. It is a hard subject and material heavy. We had 2 midterms and a final. If the material is unclear go to office hours, form a study group, or get more info from the book.
I took ABI103 winter 2023 and I still think about this professor to this day. The class is entirely graded on pure tests, so you better study EVERYTHING he says. He will test you on small details like a random enzyme that he mentioned in passing, but NOT test you on concepts he spent two hours going over. Quizlet will be your friend
suffered a death in the family and asked for an extension on a test and he told me to send him the obituary with my name on it or else he wouldn't even consider it
Hess has changed, but he's still got a ways to go. He genuinely tried helping his students this quarter. His lectures are still VERY long, and he just reads from the slides, but he added weekly assignments and clicker questions to help with understanding material (and grade padding). He encouraged (and even listened to) student feedback as well.
I was nervous going into this class, but I think a lot of his rep is bc the material he's required to teach is dry by nature. He had open-note weekly assignments and practice Q's that mirrored the difficulty of the exams--and was very open to feedback this quarter. Still a LOT of slides. FLASHCARDS WILL BE YOUR FRIEND, and start making them early.
Hess as a person is not bad and he genuinely tries to accommodate and help his students. He took our suggestions seriously and modified the content to accommodate us. I am not going to lie the content sucks, you feel like you are drowning in material, however, with the changes Hess has made you will survive.
Hess genuinely made an effort to make the class better for his students this quarter. He listened to feedback and made the final noncumulative. The average for midterm 2 was around an 80- quite high- because he dropped a couple questions. That being said, the lecture slides are bad and boring and are a literal copy-paste from the textbook.
Hess is a good guy and genuinely wants the class to succeed. Provided practice questions, study guides, and very responsive to feedback. He incorporated iclickers and a break throughout the lecture which made long lectures bearable. Lots of slides and heavy material (biochem is no joke!) but with the resources he provides, you can make it through.
Prof Hess is one of my favorite profs at Davis. He wanted everyone to succeed and was very responsive to students feedback. He provided a lot of practice exam material and the exams were fair, the final even had extra credit questions. The only drawback was that his lectures were really hard to watch as they were very dense and he is monotone.
Dr. Hess is a wonderful person. The content is very hard but he is able to make a busy, intimidating slide come together by the end of the lecture. He supported us by listening to feedback and having activities like mock exams and Kahoot.
Hess is a caring guy; he listened to student's feedback and improved his course. Although the content is difficult and the lectures are long, Hess provided us with weekly assignments and practice exams to help us understand the course better. The grading was also very fair.
Hess was an ok professor. He wants to change and asks students for feedback. There is a lot of info that is given but his exams are pretty ok if you know the material. There are weekly quizzes that are straight from lectures and pretty straightforward. Kahoots and Iclicker help with exams, they're not graded. The study guide is not too helpful.
I took Hess in Winter 24. He had Weekly Assignments that had 2 attempts available and participation points in the form of iClicker. There is a lot of material to learn but he responded to feedback from the class and made the final noncumulative! He's a fair professor who does try to make a tough class bearable.
Hess is receptive to student feedback and tries to improve the class. The content is challenging, but with resources like practice exams and Kahoot, you can do well. Unstuck AI is a helpful tool for exam prep too.
I don't think I've ever hated a class so much that I wrote a negative review. This class is so material heavy and he picks on the smallest things to be on the exam. Most of the times he doesn't even look like he wants to be there and just reads off the slides. Final exam is replaced with a final project
This class is really dense. I've never had a class with this much info in it. Hess doesn't really expand on material but to be honest there's so muchhh information that he can't really spend that much time explaining everything. Homework is a good practice for the test and his practice tests are helpful too. I really liked the final project.
I'll feel sorry for myself for the rest of my life if I don't give him a bad review. He doesn't answer emails at all. Memorizing more than 300 ppt pages in two weeks is not enough. Never fantasize about extra credit and a round up. Horrible and boring lecture.
40% of total grade is easy points (participation iclicker, open note weekly hw, 1 project), the other 60% divided into 3 mt's. No final exam/curve. An A is defs achievable, but you HAVE to put in the effort for it. Nobody says biochem is easy. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE, start making flashcards early, a LOT of info to memorize. 1 teeny EC on last exam
Lectures were insanely packed with detail with few visuals or lecture structure that made it easy to take notes. Just the sheer amount of information is insane and instead of testing on more conceptual main ideas, he often had questions about tiny subnote details that was on a single slide. Clickers and extra cred questions helped, but no curves.
He did his best to make difficult class with dense subject matter easy to understand. He broke the course down into easily-digestible sections. His lectures are long, monotone, and dense, but if you study his PowerPoints really well, you can easily get an A. His exams pretty much copy his slides word-for-word. No final exam, just a group project.
ANS 132 (Microbio lab) was chill, you just have to do a handwritten lab notebook which is checked twice, twice weekly quizzes (2pts each, open note, very easy), and a (long) lab report for the final. I found it manageable as someone who is def not into the biochem/microbio aspect of ANS. Groups of 2/3 for the lab.
