Good Prof. so far.
drags on with the slides. simple concepts but he spends so much time explaining them and it gets slightly boring because of that
Great Prof. extremely intelligent. Difficult exams but very fair. Recommend all his classes. Sophisticated humour. Best prof I have had so far.

Great prof! very helpful during office hours.
Definitely one of the nicest profs I've met at UTSC...lectures were a bit boring but given the lecture material that's understandable, and the exams were easy if you just go over his notes well. Very smart guy...definitely recommend this class.
very boring professor. when u first start out, you expect the midterm to be somewhat easy given that the material is easy -- but NO. he makes his questions so ambiguous. i don't think he proofreads his tests b/c some questions were grammatically incorrect or they weren't even questions at all!
Easy material in class (covered in other courses) but somehow makes the information a joy to re-learn. Too many ppt slides per lecture sometimes and has to rush, but slides are pretty self-explanatory. Very approachable to ask questions and makes you feel comfortable. Long midterm questions but fair
Makes learning this difficult material easy. Best prof in the school.
He is the nicest, most down to earth prof ever. If you approach him during office hours, he'll willingly spend tons of time with you until you understand it. The lecture material is a bit dry, but he does his best to make it interesting.
He is so nice! The mid term was really easy and the lectures aren't very complicated. Lectures can be boring sometimes but thats just because of the material involved. Niemeier is very helpful if you have questions. Computer labs aren't that helpful, they should just post them online for people to do so you don't have to come in to school.
possibly the worst prof...
Good prof. He made otherwise boring material interesting, and had a great presentation each class with many examples, charts, etc.
I cant believe the amount of works he puts into presenting to the class, he gets an A in my books. Something that people tend to forget is that the subject may be boring for students, but think about how boring it must be for the person teaching it, he does a great job of making the course as non-boring as humanly possible.
das Material ist so CRAP, ja? so two points for the prof's effort to make it interesting. and why not an extra point for his accent, and so on and so forth. deutschland uber alles! rock on Niemie.
Professor Niemeier rocks! He is sooo nice and understanding to talk to...
The people hating on this prof are the ones too dumb to secure a good mark in ANY class, period. He's a great prof, puts huge effort into his lectures, and obviously cares about his students-extremely helpful during office hours, very down to earth. It's a RESEARCH METHODS course morons- how entertaining did you expect it to be?
The course material is not interesting, but it is easy, and the text is not that thick compared to other psych courses. Prof Niemeier has a great sense of humour. Also, he seems as though he truly cares about his students succeeding.
This prof is really funny. I like his accent, and I find it cute when he stubles on words! On the academic side, he provides tremendous help. He's not one of those profs who makes the material harder just to conform to the statistics. Very lucky to have taken the his class.
I'm glad the more intelligent people are able to distinguish b/w boring material and an enthusiastic prof. The material is dry but I admire how much effort and time he puts into things, especially since it's not in his native tongue. He tries really hard to keep the class interesting so he gets high props for that
this guy is cute!!! n the bestest prof ever:D
it's not his fault the material is boring, he tries to make it as interesting as possible, he's helpful and the material is easy. if you don't mind being bored of your mind for 2 hours a week, still get a good mark and a helpful prof, this is the course for you.
Material was extremely boring at times, but the prof worked hard to make it interesting. His exams were completely fair.
Decent professor. Material is very dry and lectures are even worse. Exams are VERY AMBIGUOUS. Computer labs are useless as well.
Very boring lectures. Read the textbook and you'll do well
his lectures are totally not mandatory, he even said that he doesn't mind if ppl don't go to class cuz he didn't when he was an undergrad, but i enjoy his lectures. he can be very helpful in person but in emails he's very "cold" and pretty ambiguous in his answers. his lectures go by the book completely.
lecture attendence is not mandatory, though it is helpful for exam studying later on..his exams are very fair..all straightforward q's..most stuff comes from his lecture notes, which follow the textbook mostly..he's an approachable, friendly professor..and an A in his courses is highly possible, as long as you understand the lecture notes..
Classes are not mandatory. But his exams are HARD. He uses the text book and follows it very closely in his lectures so read the damn text book! I'm not a sciency type so I thought his exams were really hard but the average for all exams were pretty high. He is a good professor and kind of witty. If you like science you'll enjoy him :)
MEMORIZE HIS LEC NOTES! He follows the text book closely but not all exam q's from the textbook show up, however ALL lecture note material DOES SHOW UP. Know the first 1- 9 lecture notes REALLY well cause it shows up on the final exam MCQ section heavy. Studied the nite before the final and got an 80 on the final and 82 in the course.Awesome prof
Good proff, kinda difficult to understand.. but not a bad teacher!!
Great Prof for this class, really knows what he's talking about. Attendance isn't really mandatory for his textbook lectures but you should really attend his article lectures because he introduces a lot of new infromation.
He's a good prof, but his exams are DIFFICULT and EXTENSIVE. They're usually 60 MCQ (worth 50%) and 3 out 4 SAQ (worth 50%). Final exam is CUMULATIVE! Class is kind of boring and I personally think that he could use better examples to explain hard concepts.
Good course, not too bad. Exams are based off of lecture notes which he says in the syllabus. 2 midterms and a final. Each have 60 MCQ and 4 SAQ (answer 3 of them). If you have a Biology background, this course would probably be a lot easier, but a pretty fair course overall.
Cannot teach the material very well - I had to rely entirely on the textbook to learn and even then, midterm barely tested that.
This professor seems really kind at first, but as soon as a problem comes up he will do the bare minimum or nothing to solve it. This course involves a lot of teaching yourself the material. The exam format is fair though, allows you to pick up marks, especially considering the difficult material.
The prof is funny, and tries to engage with the class, but it is just too much material covered in a 3 hour lec. It becomes hard to retain it all, despite understanding the concepts. Perhaps, 2 lectures a week would ease learning and digesting it all.
Professor Niemeier is such a nice prof, he is more than willing to help you when you email him. He is a bit difficult to approach in person though... he looks kind of scary but I guess that's just his personality. The course load is very heavy. Attend EVERY SINGLE LECTURE and you should be able to get a high mark.
At first I didn't really like him and had trouble grasping his concepts. Do well on the thought papers (like 100%) and it'll be a really good boost for you. You need to study hard for this class but it's definately not as intimidating as you may think! He's a very approachable prof and pretty funny too :)
Try to get a good grade on the thought papers (mark booster) and make sure to go to his lectures! It is absolutely possible to do well in this course.
Great professor, keeps you interested in the material and is always available and willing to help out.
You might as well just read the textbook for this course. We read the entire 15 chapters of the required textbook, and during lectures, the material isn't really reinforced; he just tries to make them interesting, or explains it in another way that's not going to be in the exams.
Excellent professor! PSYB51 is a very neuroscience heavy psychology course, but Niemeier does a good job presenting it. He's funny and interesting, and he really wants you to do well. I recommend going to office hours instead of email; he might look a little intimidating but he's very nice and helps you wherever he can.
He is clear & extremely helpful.
I have taken two classes with Niemeier and I will definitely take more! If you have any fondness for psychneuro, you will leave with a lot of inspiration to go further in these fields. I had no previous knowledge about sensory neuro and now it is my passion. Work really hard and you can surely get 90s on everything. Super clear exams based on lecs
This class is a hitmiss with a lot of students. The exams are all short answer, but you get a choice (ex: answer 5 of 7), which is expected for C-level as you really have to know your stuff. He's confusing in lecture, but DOES test the textbook, so make sure to keep up with the readings - you'll need it. Use the t-papers to boost your mark
Awesome nd sec c
Tough exams, but if you study you'll do fine. Nice lecturer.
Chill lectures, fun prof
Very boring lectures but everything is on his exams. Not an easy bird course for Psych. Looks for details. 50% multiple choice, 50% SA. Be read to know details!
The biggest problem with his class is that the course has a very weird grading criteria. Very generous in some parts and very strict in others. For example, for midterms, you can choose 3 out of 4 Questions and get only 5/7 in each and get 100. BUT there are early class quizzes that if you miss, there are no compensations, the penalty for late pape
Took psyb51 with him, he has a strong british ascent and sometimes you cant understand him. The course content is very heavy! He has 2 midterms and final. His exams are quite hard even if you read the book and watch lectures. His short answer questions are supper detailed and impossible to remember such small details.
He has an accent and also tends to speak very fast, causing him to mumble sometimes, which is so frustrating omg. He's honestly one of the few psych profs that doesn't test you on EVERYTHING in the textbook. Watch/go to lectures, take detailed notes, and try to UNDERSTAND them. M/C q's are easy, S/A are hard. You have to really know the material!
One of the best profs at UTSC. Genuinely cares about his students and hopes that they will succeed. He provides several opportunities for you to do well in his class. It is definitely not a bird course, and takes a lot of time to learn the material. Lectures are sufficient if you don't want to read. Would recommend to those interested in neuropsych
My absolute favourite professor. He truly inspired me to pursue neuroscience, and will always be a prof I remember from undergraduate years. Extremely intelligent, fantastic prof. If you have the opportunity to take his class, go for it. You won't regret it, and you'll remember the content for a lifetime!
He is so caring and funnyy! Materials could be hard to understand at first, but if you put in the effort its worth it. He makes his exams (esp the MCQ) very fair! Highly recommend you taking a course with him!!
To be honest, a B level course has no business being this difficult. Sure, you can do well if you study and take time to learn the material, but this course has more of a C level vibe.
you'll have weekly quizzes, so i'd say attendance is mandatory. if you write a precise lecture notes and study them, you'll be fine.
The prof makes concepts more complicated than they have to be. It doesn't help that it is very hard to understand since he mumbles, doesn't annunciate, and speaks fast. I would not recommend taking this course with him if you want to understand anything.
Exams are just reciting his slides. Quizzes are given at the beginning of each class for extra credit (you just need to pass them, and you can do this by going over the slides ahead of time). He goes off on random tangents and his ideas do not flow at all. He has a really hard time communicating what he means and loses your attention quickly.
Very awful and hard to speak to. Not at all understanding and comes off as hostile. Has a very strong accent and his ideas do not flow clearly. Avoid his class at all costs, he makes everything harder than is.
I was going to give him a 2 but he really listens to students' opinions about exam difficulty and curves accordingly. For some reason he started explaining things much better when he recorded lectures, but his in-class explanations were sometimes rushed and all over the place. Really take VERY detailed lecture notes bc exams are all slide-based.
Hardest neuro class. Very technical and he makes everything more complicated. Hard to understand what hes trying to say. He comes off quite mean and careless in emails. Treats you like youre wasting his time. Ive never felt more anxious around a professor like him. Theres too many readings per week even tho i had a study group to split it with.
Holy. One thing i have realized is that UofT needs to put their profs through teaching school and at least review fully what content and how it is being taught to students. This class is way harder than any C level I have taken. It is so dense with info that it should be divided into 2 courses. The prof rambles and mumbles making him inaudible.
Overall, I think he has trouble communicating and tends to mumble. His evaluation of your work is only what really counts, as he is unwilling to provide any make-ups, extensions or accommodate students who face difficulties and require help. He's a lenient marker sometimes, and at other times, hes too critical without warning.
This was hands-down the worst class I have ever taken in my four years as a University of Toronto student. There were mandatory in-class quizzes every single week in which 200+ students were individually handed scantron sheets to fill out which was very time consuming. Exams were only short answer and were DISGUSTING. Midterm 2 average was <30%.
I think the main issue students have with him is that he isn't the best at articulating his thoughts (so feels like hes teaching himself). Some concepts/experiments in lec can be confusing so you should either clarify it with him in office hours or READ the tb. To do well in this course/exams, you have to make an effort to understand the material.
Niemeir is clearly passionate and so sweet! GRADING SCHEME IS BLESSED. 2% bonus for quizzes and he replaces your midterm mark with your final if you do better on that section. You have to work to understand (don't just take notes off slides - lectures are dense and he has a heavy accent) if you want to do well. High 90s are definitely doable :)
He seems nice and respectful and explains clearly, but he can be a bit monotone and boring, so, your mind easily can wanders. His lectures definitely help you understand the material, but it was hard for me to stay focused during his lectures.
Avoid this professor at all cost. He makes the concept unnecessarily hard and his explanations are awful, constant mumbles with accent and tedious lecturing style just distracting.
Took PSYB51 with him in 2019, and it was one of the best course I've ever taken. He was a really kind professor who seemed to care about his students. However once the pandemic hit, the compassion he felt for his us disappeared as quickly as everyones hopes for normal life did. NROC64 was hell, he was unreasonable and straight up wanted us to fail.
Seems like a nice guy, but I've never seen someone so make a bad situation worse. Grade is almost 100% from exams (& quizzes that he won't mark if you exceed the 5 min limit) which are an hour long, w/ roughly 6 mins to do each multi-part question. Take in person or don't take at all - this is the worst handling of the pandemic I've seen yet :(
i heard such nice things about this prof i was really excited to take this course but he's put us through hell during covid. 10 multipart short answer questions in one hour, not to mention he uploaded a syllabus and is following a completely different one. he also isnt even using the textbook he assigned us to use. please take this in person:(
Dr. Niemeier is really passionate about his research and the field of psychology. Unfortunately, his lectures, organization, and grading scheme are really bad and puts students in a really tough position. Also, the exam grading is very vague which seems really fishy. Hopefully, the courses he teaches post-pandemic are more conducive to our learning
Literally the worst course I've ever taken at UTSC. The prof doesn't care about his students at all. We had 10 SAQs, and each question had 3 parts to it, with a 60-minute time limit. The tests were literally impossible to complete to your best ability because of time. When students raised concerns, we were ignored or given excuses.
Very doable to score a 100 in his class! 10 SA for midterms. He grades only top 8 AND if you get 2/3 marks per question, that's marked as perfect! Don't need textbook but I used it to clarify concepts as he LOVES to go off on tangents and over complicate some simple concepts. You get used to it eventually in terms of what you actually need to know
Content is too heavy for such poor explanation of critical concepts. Also, not enough time to write exams. His accent and speed I can deal with, but when one explains things this poorly there is nothing to do but drop the course.
GREAT prof. Lectures are dense, take good notes. His marking scheme for exams is amazing - he takes out the lowest two answers. There is SO much support for this course - feedback sessions with TAs for all exams and the two 'thought papers', multiple review sessions with the prof, etc. His emails are personable and encouraging. Best neuro course.
he's pretty boring and the lectures are content heavy and long. lots of stuttering and rambling, so it's sometimes hard to figure out what is actually going to be tested (he goes into a lot of unnecessary detail). entire course is graded by 2 midterms and a final, with vague grading scheme (2/3 to pass, 10 questions, 1 hour) but not hard to pass
Lectures are very dense, but can be interesting. No. 1 most important thing is to make sure to take extremely detailed notes!!! i.e., jot down illusion examples. 2 midterms and 1 final. SAs can test on small details. Textbook is not necessary.
-Very clear and straightforward lectures -Tested on 3 exams weighted: 25, 25, 50 - Exams are entirely application based, so long as you understand the content you will do well - In addition to this, the exam format is excellent, you need 2/3 for each question to receive 100%, and your 2 lowest grades (out of 10 questions) are dropped.
Worst class i have ever taken in utsc. If you ever think, for a slight second, that you want to take the course, get that thought out if your head. You can barely understand what hes saying. His marking scheme is extremely confusing and irrational. He cannot explain concepts well. He focuses on random details. Save yourself of early.
Lectures are very long and I find him difficult to understand. He goes into a lot of unnecessary detail and there was not nearly enough time to answer 10 short answers (with each question having multiple parts) in 1 hour. Not very compassionate and I would avoid taking classes with this professor.
He lacks empathy, is hard to understand, and does not break down the material in easier/simplier ways. 2 Midterms is 25% and Final is 50%. So terrible and complicated, do not take this course unless you want a headache. Not a bird course, it's the opposite of one.
Although he marked questions full marks for 2/3 marks on a question, the entire course grade fell on the midterms and exams. And the final exam was cumulative of the 12 heavy contented lectures, like who does that? There's no room for my improvement, like how am I supposed to pass when everything I do I fail???
I do not want to take a class with him ever again. Grading is based on only 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final. All short answer questions and not enough time. No other assignments to help increase your grade. His lectures are boring and longer than necessary. Rambler. It's hard to tell what material is worth noting and what will be on the exams.
I do not think the content was delivered in a fun or invigorating style so maybe that is one thing. The TAs were accessible and more knowledgeable about the course weighs and grades but the content questions were emailed to the professor with a functional 48 hour policy. Hope you can take PSYB57.
Literally one of the worst professors I have ever had. Lacks empathy and compassion and id very difficult to understand. Wish I hadn't take his course.
Lectures are very heavy & lengthy but the content is very interesting. Organize your notes well (as it's open book) & attend office hours. 2/3 marks per question is a 100% & worst two Qs are dropped. Use this to your advantage. Skip questions you don't know & focus on getting as many questions answered. Time management is key, not perfectionism.
Never thought I'd make a review but he's so underrated. Both course content were hard but when you try to understand it yourself (repeat & repeat), you'll begin to realize how well he actually explains such difficult concepts. Plus, he's extremely responsive to questions. He's kind and generous enough to have a marking scheme that benefits everyone
Good and caring prof
lectures were so long and slow, but still jam packed with information like you wouldnt believe. Intro to perception sounded very interesting but i genuinely cant stand this class, it doesnt feel engaging at all. The prof is very nice though. Also tests are 10 SAQ with only 1 hour, which is ridiculous and very tough.
He seems like a brilliant and very nice guy, but this was the first class that I've cried and broken down over in my third year of uni. Content and lectures are incredibly heavy and difficult to grasp, especially physics concepts. Exams are only short answer application questions and you have about 6 minutes per question (1 hour for 10 Qs).
Content and lectures can be gruelling and the exams are very challenging but he makes up for it with his marking scheme! Very reasonable marker and explains difficult content quite thoroughly.
He explains the concepts very well! Difficult course, but interesting content
Great professor, super helpful when you reach out. He really encourages you to try and think critically and learn the material from a critical viewpoint. He is helpful in creating your presentations on what to say and how to present it - something which other profs had told me they would never do. Participation is a huge component but easy
I enjoyed this course it's very informative. It was really difficult in the beginning but it got better in the end. You really need to focus on his lectures and if you do you do great. I was wasting my time trying to understand the textbook but his lectures are very detailed and better to understand. I'm glad I didn't drop the course.
probably the worst psych profs. his lectures are extremely mundane and monotone & exams are weighted in the dumbest format. 70 mcqs and 5 saqs, with the mcqs worth 50% and saqs worth the other 50%. so stupid because 70 mcqs SHOULD NOT be equivalent to 5 saqs, unless the saqs are essay-type responses. nope! each saq was a sentence long... insane.
This and PSYB55 were the most difficult courses I've taken so far at UTSC. Prof is monotone & CRAMS unrealistic amounts of info into each lecture. Content is HARD & HEAVY. Lectures should've been broken up. There is only so much one PowerPoint should hold. Test structure was also weirdly weighted. The work I had to put in to get this B was INSANE.
The worst grader ever. His grading scheme makes no sense and the tests are very complicated as well.
Very high workload but very informative lectures.
Good guy but I will not lie, this course was very test heavy, and his grading was horrible. Not to be rude but his accent is so strong I had a hard time understanding, and to make it worse the class was online. I could not do it anymore and ended up dropping the class
The content is challenging, but the professor breaks it down well in lectures. Definitely focus on attending class and using the textbook - unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prep! Exams are tough, but the grading is reasonable.
Prof is nice, but this course was poorly structured, so one bad midterm or final and its over for you and your GPA. He tends to go on tangents a lot and can sometimes overcomplicate things, but his lectures are sufficient. For us, he offered optional bonus quizzes, but for like a 2% bonus, which is no help when compared to a 50% final... like wtf.
i think he's a rlly nice professor and seems to rlly care for his students. the only thing that sucks about this course is the grading scheme… why is it only tests… regardless you can do well but you do have to put in the work because of the amount of content
Really nice professor, the lectures can be quite dense but material is well-explained and he's good at answering questions and clarifying doubts when you ask him. Short answers are weighted heavily on tests but there's flexibility in how many questions you have to answer and how much you need to get full credit, which really helps.
When it comes to explanation, he can be confusing sometimes. A lot of weekly readings. But his exam format is really good. The exams only contain content from the lecture or reading, and do not test on something he didn't teach you. There are short answers, and you can drop 1. Each short answer, as long as you get 5/7 or 3/5, you get the full mark.
If you've taken other neuroscience classes, this one is really easy. He puts an effort into making sure you understand the material, which is very intuitive. His questions are very clear, as long as you answer what's being asked, you'll get full marks, do the practice questions theyre usually on the midterm.
