Nice teacher, but poor teaching skills. She will talk about subjects in Chem that we don't need to know for tests/chem placement test and will go off topic a lot. Vague questions on test and will still mark wrong for answers that are relatively correct but not the answer she was looking for. she told us 2/3 of Fall 2012 semester class did not pass.
Sweet woman but she can't teach. Too new, too nervous, I don't know but I feel like she isn't clear at all. Think she just needs time to settle in
Very good at chemistry but not so well with teaching. Had to self study the whole semester. Test and Lectures do not connect.
Instructor teaching was not the best all, she goes pretty fast must study on your own regularly if you want to pass course. The course chem 115 is difficult but instructors teaching does not really help.
She's one of the nicest teachers I've ever had. She cares about her students and will try her best to help you out. She has so much knowledge about chemistry that the tests are extremely hard because we go deep into it. She tries to point out what will be on the test but one must definitely study on their own to receive an A or B.
I use to love chemistry before I took this class. I think it's more the professor that I didn't like. She went to fast at times and sometimes failed to look into the audience to answer questions.
Corcoran gives a great introductory course , but you of course need to read the book and learn it on your own, lectures are a SUPPLEMENT. With this attitude an A is easily attained, as everyone else expects to be force fed making Corcoran give out loads of extra credit.
Im pretty sure that only good comment was posted by her. Honestly I dont get how people say she's a nice person. She views curves as a insult. Yet her class average on one of our test was a C- that was the best the rest was lower. Dosent get stuff back on time. Is lazy powerpoint confuse the crap outta me
The real problem with this class was the size, OVER 350 STUDENTS! At the beginning of the semester I thought she was a horrible teacher, so I stopped going to class. When I did go, the lectures were too fast and hard to follow. Study on your own and you'll do well, also going to her office hours seemed to help others. Also join SCI 115 for help!
Just don't take her not worth it man.
And the worst teacher of 2013 goes to, drum roll please, Maura Corcoran. Yea she is horrible. My mom can probably teach better than her heck my grandma can too.
People make u sound bad. Even though u maybe bad at teacher somewhere inside you look deep and ask your self should i be teaching.Should I be so harsh on grading should I play mind games with my students to set them up to fail. U dont believe in curves why?! If you are a bad teacher u need a curve plain & simple it covers up for how bad you may be.
I want to blame my self for failing. But i took SCI115 I came in during office hours and u didn't want to help. I created different study groups. I did so much to try and i have never failed before. BUT you are the one to be blamed for everyone doing bad. nothing else to say stay away from her. bad teacher will mess up ur dreams and future.
Worst class ever. Her lectures are confusing and there are mistakes on her powerpoints. She never posted our grades on ILearn for us to see how well we're doing in the course, rarely responds back to emails and I visited her in office hours once and felt rushed. I am a B average student and failed all the exams. Something is wrong here.
Maura is a very nice person but not a helpful professor.I would not recommend her at all. Too unorganized and lacks clear explanations of important material.I just stressed out so much because of this class.I probably will need to retake this class or restudy,to prepare for upper level classes.
worst teacher ever today is the day of the final at 553 am i learn so much more from youtube than her. yea most like;y have to retake it. stay away from this woman i am warning you.
Worst teacher I've had. You can try as hard as you want and still fail. Just took the final and I have a feeling I am going to have to retake this class. She is a nice person but extremely frantic and doesn't know how to explain concepts. Do everything you can to avoid taking her unless you want to struggle all semester and end up failing.
Easily the worst teacher at SFSU. This class is impossible to pass as long as she continues to teach it. She's always contradicting herself and has no idea how to teach. Horrible teacher.
Horrible
Worst teacher at SFSU? thats an understatement probably the worst in the world
The setup is not good, it meets 4 times a week, 2 of those time are the unhelpful 200 student lectures where Corcoran breezes through slides & nothing is absorbed. The only time any learning happens is lab & discussion-not taught by her & not 200 students. Lectures need to be cut out. Average test score was 50%. Signs of a poor teacher
lets be real, the class wasn't hard. she gave study guides which were basically the same questions as the test. people are just lazy and don't try but complain. if you do the hw and read the lecture notes (all posted on I learn) you can easily pass with an A... she is lazy and does take long time to give back tests, but she's not that bad.
this is not an easy class, but you're forewarned about this on day 1. maura isn't a very good lecturer/instructor, but she is very helpful in her office hours and offers many opportunities to boost your grade. she genuinely wants you to love chem and pass her class, you just have to show her that you're working hard and doing the best you can
Maura is one of the nicest teachers at sfsu personally I understand that her lectures were difficult to understand, but in my own opinion I believe that it was due to the class being in the largest classroom on campus when really our entire class could only fit a quarter of it. When in her help sessions I felt as though her explanations were clear
I just had her and she is super nice. You can't blame the teacher for the hard subject. she might be a little confusing in the lecture but power points aren't. this class sucks but you have to get through it and GO to her office hours. she's the only chem teacher who will extend dates for homework for the whole class if you say you need more time
Do not recommend her for lecture. It was her 1st time & she worked at 2 SCHOOLS = limited office hours. Friends say she was a better lab teacher/teaching individually. In the end she was lenient, but I heard many failed. DO THE HOMEWORK. STUDY HARD. Do NOT take too many units along with this class, you'll need the study time & sleep.
Dude. This teacher is so easy for chem 115, if you read the book you'll get an A easily because barely any one else reads and she ends up giving out ton of xtr cred after every test
All I can say is her lecture was not organized and clear. She knows her stuff but just randomly through it out to you. I pretty much learned from my lab instructor and myself at home. I do feel waste of time to go to her lecture. However, if you do her HW and practice exams then you should be fine. Because most of the exam questions are come them
I think all the people who say she's the worst got stuck in her 400+ student class.I'm in her 75 student class right now and she's perfectly fine.super nice and always willing to help.online hw can be difficult to format.study guides for every test.will curve if the avg is low. go to class/do hw for points.honestly, can be easy if you actually work
easiest teacher ever ... everyone complains because they are prob super lazy ... never pay any attn in class.. and expect to spoon fed answers to everything.
Prof. Corcoran was very passionate about chemistry. She really tried to push the class, but our 8AM session was fairly unresponsive. He material was tough, she was late a few times, but otherwise I survived... barely!
The material is pretty straight forward, but she has a tendency to just belt out concepts with barely any explanation. I would find myself youtubing most of the material because she just would not elaborate. She also has a tendency to change homework due dates without notice. I've missed several hws because of this bs. Slow at getting feedback.
. To get an A: know the basic concepts in the syllabus and in Gen chem 2. She is not teaching you anything new, just how to apply these concepts. This lab was super easy if you simply read the lab manual. She Can be hilarious and loves cats
Took her for gen chem II lab. Easy as pie, requires only a surface level understanding. Disorganized, ineffective, and time-wasting, as far as her teaching goes. If you have half a brain than the class is pretty easy, but at the end of the day, if you like science, you'll feel like her lab is a waste of time. Much better chem teachers to be had.
Amazing Professor. She just became one of my favorite teachers actually because i can see she's really passionate about helping you and that made me want to learn more (which is crazy because its chemistry...) and mind you this was the summer session so it was very fast pace. But everything she taught was so clear and easy to understand.
I had her for Chem 100 too, and having her as my lab instructor was my motivation for striving to try harder to understand and apply the concepts taught in lecture. Extremely nice, self-declared supporter of all of students, and very insightful as to how some professors write their tests. Gives extra credit, and redos often, and very motivational.
I took her chem 100 lecture, about 120 students. It was pretty boring, but her teaching style is very clear and easy to understand. All the homework is online. The final was optional and it replaces the lowest exam score. I signed up for Chem 115 next semester with her as a lab teacher.
There are many quizzes and about 4 test. You have to come to class to pass. This class was not hard but it was not interesting either. I took it because I missed my placement exam date, and I had to drop my Chem 115 class. Taking this class was not mandatory, but I am glad I took it because it kept me up to date with Chem for next semester.
She's super nice and is willing to help with anything you ask. The issue is as a lecturer, she rushes way too much & especially during the most challenging concepts. I'm usually good in science classes but she made it almost impossible to grasp certain concepts. Don't even buy the textbook just the access code for hw since we didnt use the book.
She's one of those professors that take their own time and puts all that effort into her students. She explains everything pretty clearly. She's one of the best professors I've had in SF state. She's pretty strict with the lab notes but she's very clear on what she wants. I got an A in the class so if I could do it anyone else for sure can.
She's a pretty decent teacher. She will give you attitude if you don't pay attention in class, but it's only cause she wants you to learn. Her lectures are boring, but it's really easy to understand her class.
Had Maura as my lab instructor for 2 semesters because I did not pass chem 115 the first time. This class is not easy but if you are willing to put in work and ask lots of questions Maura is very helpful. Really cares about her students but has clear guidelines as far as what she wants and is a tough grader because of it. Definitely my favorite
Maura Is a great instructor who knows how to teach. She is very clear with all her lectures but make sure to take notes! She's a very approcahable women but you will not pass her course if you don't put a lot of effort into the class.
A very enthusiastic professor. Very engaging.
Maura is a great instructor. She is very approachable and makes her lectures clear. Attendance is Mandatory; but of course any chemistry course is mandatory because its pretty tough. Study and do you homework and you will pass the course.
Maura is such a nice and caring professor. She provides practice exams that are very similar to the actual tests and she really prepares you so you do well in CHEM 115. She makes a difficult topic understandable for everyone.
Take Maura for your lab section, you won't regret it.
Overall, no complaints. In fact, she is one of the best professors that I have met. There are always quizzes at the beginning of her class but no worries because it's open note. WebAssign for homework.
The best CHEM 115 lab prof there is. She is awesome, you will not regret taking her!!
Maura is the best, I refuse to believe all of the previous harsh comments. She was my lab instructor and taught me more than my lecture teacher did. Her quizzes/webassigns are extremely do-able, and there are no surprises. She's super accessible outside of class. She truly cares for her students and does everything she can to help you pass.
I had her for both chem 100 and chem 115 lab. She is amazing at explaining things and makes sure you know exactly whats going to be on the tests. Shes also really nice.
Although she is a nice professor, she is terrible at explaining the class concepts and is very disorganized. She writes messily on the board and is hard to follow. Always left me confused and spent more time asking my peers for help than learning from her.
She has sample exams for each one and they're similar to the one you'll end up taking. She offers extra credit on HW and if you get the answer wrong to a test, as long as you show work she'll give you some credit. There's quizzes and the homework is online but you have a month to do it. She cares if you understand the material. You'll love her!
Professor Maura is an amazing professor. Her lectures on chemistry and math are understandable! I hate that we have to do ALEK but it is helpful to understand the topic more. As long if you understand the material you'll pass the exam. She gives a sample exam and tells you which topic are in the exam. Take her if you're not ready to take Chem 115
Maura is a nice person, but her teaching style is very hard to keep up with. She was rushing through heavy material, did not go in depth with hard topics which made her exams difficult. Lots of ALEKS homework, participation taken with iClicker every lecture, 7!! exams (insane amount!), 10-12 problems on each, some worth 20-40pts! Take another prof
My favored professor so far. She gives plenty of practice sheets to work from., and also a practice test which is similar to her tests. Show up to lecture, make use of her office hours, and review the practice sheets and youll pass. She sets you up for success.
Does not take time on lectures. She solves the problems before even teaching it and expects you to know it. Study guides are nothing like the test, does not explain anything clear. The whole class i felt like I was teaching myself. Does not bother solving problems with you and 8/10 times she solved it wrong.
Class isn't that difficult. She gives plenty of practice worksheets and practice tests; it's up to you to do them. Sometimes, she can go over concepts and solve problems on the board too fast and without explanation, but if you're confused, just go to office hours. Genuinely cares and wants you to do well.
Maura is awesome. Chemistry has always been a difficult concept for me personally to learn and I heavily rely on being a visual learner so effective lectures are important for me. Maura's is a great professor that truly cares about how her students do in her class. This is chemistry, so if you don't put in the effort you won't do great.
Lots of number typos (on exams as well) is an issue when teaching quantitative chemistry. How can I get correct answers with wrong input? 80% of your grade is exam based. Inaccessible to talk to, seems stressed out. Strict tech policies, but tablets ok in class for note taking. Lectures mostly consist of examples. Mandatory attendance.
Maura was a good professor. She really knew what she was teaching, she sometimes went a little to fast but she will slow down if you ask her too and always making sure everyone has no questions. The test were too bad if you understand the material. Overall great lectures if you pay attention and take notes. Also completing the alecks homework helps
I had her for zoom classes and she was very fast and wouldn't explain the material well. My whole class needed her to slow down because we were all confused and she did an extra review day for the quiz, but it didn't help much. She sometimes answers questions during class if she sees them. HW on ALEKS isn't related to what you learn in class really
Maura is really nice, her lectures arent too heavy. Do all your hw and study and you should be fine.
Maura is a nice person but she doesn't seem familiar with Zoom . I had a hard time following her lectures b/c she talks about things that have nothing to do with Chem . She makes mistakes which is a problem for Gen Chem 2. Also her tests and online HW are hard , but she gives points for effort . Overall she is not the best but not the worse
The class clearly struggled with some concepts and she would blame the class. Exam questions were more difficult than the material in lecture. I spent a lot of time studying for this course. Take chemistry with a more understanding Professor you will learn more, look forward to attending lecture and participate.
I love Maura! She's such an awesome and caring teacher! Pay attention in her class and take notes and you'll pass!
Gives you every opportunity to do well. Explains things clearly and relatably. Super nice lady and great professor
Took her when the pandemic started so the transition was hard on all of us, but her way of grading was really tough and the lectures didn't really help to prepare for the exams. Lecture style was very fast paced, but with very little time to process information. Used ALEKS way too much to teach myself the chemistry ..
She was such an amazing professor. I was in her lab classes for Chem 100&115. He lectures are always practice problems and helped clear up any confusion. All hw is on gradescope which is easy, and she would open them up if you missed them. She would stay after lab to see if anyone needed extra problems. Do you hw and show up you will pass
DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS NOT GOOD OVER ZOOM. DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANYTHING. IF I CAN GO BACK BACK IN TIME I WOULDNT TAKE HER
The Professor was really nice and pretty straightforward with the work and grading. If you take notes you'll be good and write down a lot of the practice problems to look back on. We used Aleks for hw but we had to pay for it. Overall she's a nice teacher
Professor Corcoran went pretty fast on her lectures and never really explained anything well. She uses ALEKS which is a horrible learning website and most of the time it wasn't related to what you learned in class. However, is she pretty lenient with test/quiz scores. If you do your HW and study you can at least get a decent grade.
Maura wasn't an overall bad professor, but she assigned A LOT of homework weekly using that god awful ALEKS website. Be prepared because this was a lecture heavy class; make sure to pay attention and take many notes because the homework is based off the lectures.
can't teach and makes the students really confused.
I loved this prof. I think a lot of the other reviews were during the pandemic, and I can see how it would've been a much more difficult class online. In our in-person class, her lectures are very informative and make sense. I like that you can practice the material with the homework site, even though it is frustrating at times.
Maura is a very nice professor. She is very knowledgeable but lectures fast, so things can get a tad confusing She will happily repeat things and doesn't shame you/ make you feel dumb for not knowing or missing even simple things. The work is challenging but doable, and the labs are pretty simple if you read the pre-lab.
If you are a person who didn't take chemistry in high school, be prepared to attend all the lectures. She goes over a lot of introductory topics but it's easy if you attend every lecture. There is ALEKS homework as well. Just make sure to take notes, do ALEKS and watch the organic chemistry tutor after and you'll pass this class with an easy A.
I don't know how other classes looked like, but the one I was in was a big class and she talks kinda quiet and it was hard for me to hear her even when I sit near the front. She uses online tools like ALEKS and Gradescope for homework and assignments. If you are reviewing basic Chemistry, she's pretty good at explaining things in a simple manner.
She is terrible, she uses aleks which makes this very hard to understand. would never take her again
She truly likes her work and tries to make it easy, but she often glosses over things and makes the class more confusing. She is disorganized and often confuses herself. The class itself is not so bad once I teach myself everything. She's lenient with grading but throws a lot of stuff at you at once. ALEKS is horrible too.
Honestly, I find this teacher a lot easier to understand in comparison to my high school chemistry teacher. This class does can be a little difficult to understand, but she explains it very thoroughly and describes it in a basic way for us as students to understand. We use ALEKS as an online tool for homework, but it's not overpowering. Easy class.
Maura is absolutely amazing, I would definitely take her again as my lab instructor. she makes everything clear, she's very helpful and explained everything clearly. there was about 13 lab homework they are really easy and they are based on the lab that you did that week. she gives you full credit for seminar for simply just showing up to class.
She was great at getting people into chemistry, a really hard topic to cover. While the course material is hard, her work was generally easy and great review material for tests and exams. Sometimes she'll go off on a side tangent unrelated to chemistry, but it's a good opportunity to finish up on notes or take a small break from thinking.
I would make sure to attend all lectures because it will help you in the end. be sure to ask questions and go to office hours if you need help. im assuming those who gave a 1 star didn't take advantage of all the support she offered. she WANTS you to pass and do well in you future chem courses you just have to also do your part and put in the work
She has very short and terrible lectures and does not know how to do the labs. This professor is very bad at explaining everything. The entire class is a waste of time. If you take her you will end up teaching yourself after class. She also has a very unwelcoming demeanor . Students do not feel comfortable asking her for help. Avoid at all costs.
Overall she's good because all the learning materials are in PowerPoint and Aleks.
I had no chem background, but Prof. Corcoran explained things well. Sometimes she over-simplified, which made things confusing, but she was mostly helpful. She's open to questions and wants students to succeed. Funny, relatable, and made the class engaging. Overall, a good and fair professor. Attend lectures and do practice, you will be fine.
Dr. Corcoran is a wonderful professor that was very supportive in my first chemistry class at SFSU, CHEM 115. It was the first semester of the chemistry department implementing the new studio course structure and, to say the least, it was a bumpy road. All in all, I definitely recommend taking her for CHEM 115, and even CHEM 100 too!
She's a very kinda professor, the course itself is a bit unorganized and complicated. It's due to the new studio style the chemistry department has decided to start which isn't her faults. Attendance is very important. Also make sure to ask her questions as she breaks it down very well. She is a great instructor!
Maura is super nice and covers everything you need to know for CHEM 115. My main issue is that she rushes through the lectures and then expects you to engage in labs that are not always well explained. Overall though, I would recommend her class!
A lot of students think she's mean, but truthfully I think she's awesome and really helped me lock in with the class and actually cares about her students. She will call you out for using your phone during important sections and sometimes lecture is confusing, but there are MANY opportunities for help including office hours.Deep down she's very nice!
