Awesome teacher, learn a lot in IT 202, DL class, i would highly recommend Prof. Deek, and i am again taking her for CIS 601. She is very fast in replying. If u have any questions, email her she will reply very fast. Always helpful... very nice Professor.
Do not take this class if you expect to learn anything. If you learn mostly from reading books, then by all means take this class. Her feedback is limited to "excellent review" or "you need to write more". You better hope at least one person knows how to program in your group. I can think of worse
Do Not Take A Online course with her if at all possible!! Her grading is rediculas, me and several classmates got 12/25 on programming assigments when we had close to if not perfect code! Directions are vauge and confusing, she is nice and helpful, but that don't mean nothing with her grading system
She does not do a thing in this course. The only things you will learn you must teach yourself, something you could do with out paying for the course. The exams are rediculious, and she doesn't even show up for those. Poor feedback on assignments. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, You have been warned...
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER...SHE IS HARD, UNFAIR. I LOVE Info Tech AS A SUBJECT but I THINK I LOST INTEREST BECAUSE OF HER.
Horrible. Doesn't teach anything, does no work, knows nothing about the subject. Reponses are not clear, nor does she answer your question. Should be teaching HS not college. One of the only times where i felt i knew more about the subject than the professor. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!
This is the second time taking this instructor (IT 202 was first). Very helpful and knowledgeable. Lots of work though, but you will learn a lot.
Excleent teacher. Gives a fair amount of work, but is fair in grading policy. I wish I could take another coure with her.
Took three DL classes this semester. This is actually the only course that expected any work of me. Got a B and my money worth.
I was warned before I took this class that Mrs. Deek will be tough, which she indeed was. But she was also fair and very helpful. I strongly recommend her to the serious student. Will be taking another DL class with her this fall.
Helpful instructor. Course content should be updated, but there is lots of opportunities to have practical discussions in webct. Lots of programming assignments which is good for practice.
She doesn't know about the material. She couldn't open my assignment which was 100% XHTML valid but broken in IE. I told her to open it with another browser, even gave her a link. She coudln't figure out how to view the source either. Then she expected peo
Had two IT courses with her already. It was pretty good. Yes, a lot of work but a fair grader. Taking CIS 490 with her again now. The best so far. Very organized and relevant to what I do in my job as software developer.
Just took the midterm. So far so good. Very useful projects, but a lot of work. Grading is fair and instructor is helpful. Responds to emails and class questions almost immediately.
Have her for three courses. She is doing an excellent job in all three. Course material is very informative and she is very helpful. Her midterms really test my knowledge of the material so they were hard, but she grades fair. I hope I can take her again in an other course.
This was a very good software engineering course. Well organized projects that covered everything about SE. Instructor is helpful and responsive. Best DL course I have taken but had difficulties getting my team members to do their parts in the group project. Overall a valuable experience.
I dont like DL but I didnt want to take the other instructor. Was a good decision. If you want to be a software developer you will appreciate this class very much The professor is very helpful and knowledgeable. She is on line all time which is good when you need help. It is not an easy course but if you participate in webct, do the projects and ta
I took this course two semesters ago and did not realize its usefulness until I got my first IT job. If you want a course that combines theory and applications of information design, this is the one. The instructor is pretty good and very helpful. Will make you work hard but is also a fair grader.
Excellent professor. I had her for several classes and she has a good command of the material. I highly recommend her.
Wonderful professor. I learned a lot in this class. Material is very useful. Very hands on! Teacher is online literally 24/7 to answers any questions or concerns you may have. I highly recommend this course and the professor
Excellent teacher. This is the second course I took with her and I plan on taking IT202 in the spring with her. She is very helpful. She is always willing to help her students.
Really nice lady; will always help you if you ask.
She teaches the class online. There is a lot of work but it's all organized. Just follow her directions and you'll get an A or B. Participate in the weekly discussions and hand the work on time. I'm taking a third class with her this Fall 2010. That's how much I think that this professor is the one that should be taken for all IT classes.
I had here in 1999 and 2000 for CIS 113 and 114. She is a good teacher but she will make you WORK. It is not easy but u will learn a lot.
Really easy professor. As long as you do your work and project you'll pass with flying colors. Exam are a bit hard but she is a really easy grader. She also curves at the end as well.
Online section. Textbook needed to do the weekly chapter summaries. Midterm and Final are 10 Qs mostly based off slides, with some content from book. Gives partial credit on exams. Programming projects are reasonable and are mostly HTML and Javascript, but also include a little bit of JSP and PHP. Googling tutorials will suffice. Not difficult.
Online Section. Textbooks are NOT needed. For the weekly posts just summarize a few slides for the week. The projects are fairly simple and can be fun if you know the basics of programming. Exams are fairly simple and from the slides mostly. Pretty good class in my opinion. The JavaScript project took me the most time and research as a heads up.
You can look up all of her assignments on Youtube. Not a very good professor, but very quick to email. Tends to be a lenient grader, and lenient with herself too when it comes to grading. Her review that she posts in moodle2 before an exam IS THE EXAM. The parts she points out are the parts on the exam. Not a professor for everyone.
if you're a person that knows coding, then take it. but if you're a person that's okay with coding don't take it. everything you do in her online course you have to teach yourself that, she doesn't post videos for anything.
Online class. If you already have a handle on "advanced" Java work (creating Java appsapplets, knowing node trees, etc) you will do fine. Class does not have online meetings, just summarize the slides from Moodle each week. Information in this class is very outdated and assignments will take long if you're not experienced in Java
Class is online. I feel like doing the assignments is most important. do those along with the project. the exams are based on the readings. if you read the chapters she assigns and the topics she says are on the exams, you're fine. she responds pretty quick to emails, assuming they're at reasonable hours.
Professor Maura is a very tough grader. However you learn a lot in her class. If you are an IT major and want to really build up your skills , take professor Deek. There is a forum posting every week and 4 assignments throughout the semester. The midterm was very easy and you have to come to campus on a Saturday to take the exam.
Study for midterm, final and you will be good
Very straightforward course and professor. As long as you have a basic grasp of the concepts of the class you should do well.
Maura was one of the best Profs. I've had at NJIT. She was extremely helpful with the projects required for IT202. I had already taken Advance Java programming at ECC before I came to NJIT, so learning JSP in this class was a breeze for me. Got an A!!
Reading and summaries due every week. Make sure you get group members that know what they're doing for the project. You'll need html, php, js, css, and database knowledge, so start assembling a Voltron with people that know these. The exams aren't too tough, but can be if you don't study or at the very least haven't been doing the reading.
This online course required a high coding level. Assignment is so difficult. I have all my 1st project all function work, and ask two developers to improve my code, but i still get a low score. The syllabus looks good, but this course definitely for junior or senior CS students, not for IT or IS major with entry level. Learning curve is very sharp.
Beware of on-campus exams (midterm and final) if you're taking her online classes. Saturday 9am-11am or 11am-1pm depending on which class you're in. Mine was 9am. You need some experience writing in java to tackle the programming assignments,And don't forget the "try" and "catch" to handle exception errors. Otherwise points will be taken off.
Not a fan of programming but this class wasn't too bad. A lot of students complain that she gives too much work which is kind of true, but it works out your favor because all of the work adds up to a somewhat easy 45%. You can tank the midterm/final and still pass the class if you put in the effort and do all of her work on time. Plus, she curves.
Class super cringe do NOT take online unless willing to sacrifice sanity as well as hours of time wasted trying to comprehend the obscure assignment this professor gives you in addition to giving exams that when viewing the "whats going to be on the midterm" makes you think its a breeze but ITS NOT.
Don't take this class if you're just fulfilling credit requirements, it's a big mistake. This professor is extremely stubborn. For exams you have to show up on campus, and sit in a specific seat assigned to you. She bombards her moodle weekly pages with an unreasonable amount of reading material/tutorials, it's a mess.. And she LOVESS giving zeroes
Maura Deek is a wonderful instructor. She promptly responds to emails. She helps you when you are have difficulty with an assignment. She is a quick and fair grader. Highly recommend her.
Professor Deek is a wonderful instructor. She literally worked with me for many hours over several days to get my assignment working, but also to make sure I understood the material. You come out of this very well cersed
Maura Deek is very knowledgeable and helpful professor. She is always connected to Moodle and her email. She is very responsive. She responds quickly to students and grades very quickly. She gives good feedback and wants to make her students succeed.
She's a fair grader and replies to emails very quickly. I'd recommend taking her class if you REALLY want to learn and are willing to put the effort. Read the chapters, participate in the weekly discussions, and do the assignments. She gives you review topics before the exams. Knowing theory is key to pass her courses.
Really wasnt that bad. Read the book and look up stuff online and the assignments wont be too bad. The powerpoints are useless but they help with the midterm and final. Every week email her about the assignment and ask for help. She will remember you and it will look like you are trying hard. She'll cut you slack in grading.
Don't take her. She teaches you nothing. 5 Assignments were you have to code. She expects you to know everything. Replied to emails late and a strict grader. Weekly assignments were easy and the final and midterm were challenging
Advanced programming? More like Tech Writing pt2. This course which is supposed to "teach advanced java programming skills" consists of only 3 programming assignments the entire semester. The other 15 weeks consists of mandatory 5 paragraph essays every week. I took Technical Writing at the same time I took this, and that required less writing
She does not care about her students and dont bother taking her class at all. Shes the worst professor I have ever took. Thanks
Definitely one of the Best instructors in the business: really passionate and supportive. Everything you need is there (including her). She replies back before you even finish your typing.. Her assignments are very doable, and can be learned from her materials, books, or even YouTube. There're so much to say but not enough characters allowed...
5 assignments. Not too bad, if you read the book/look online for help. The idea is that you try. She was very patient with me, as I emailed her a lot. She was very forgiving when I asked her a ton of questions. Always responded right away. 4 paragraphs every week in a forum, respond to another forum post. Not too bad, honestly. Just try
For whatever reason, her class didn't have in person or online meetings. We had only powerpoints to learn from. Her weekly participation discussions sucked; we had to type 4 paragraphs for topics that could be explained in 2. Lastly, her programming projects are ridiculously hard and she offers no real help. Avoid her at all costs.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Caring and very helpful. She will work with you at times convenient for you day, night and on the weekend! More accessible than any professor I have ever had! She answers emails quickly. She was patient with my endless questions and gave me the encouragement needed to succeed. She is a fair and quick grader. Could go on and on.
Had Professor Deek for 114 and 202. She is extremely helpful as long as you ask questions. She does a great job in breaking down concepts in depth rather then keeping it objective. Was able to understand Java, HTML, PHP, and MySQL databases through her courses. I would highly recommend you take her if you wish to truly understand the subject.
I had to come back and respond to some of the negative comments here. Most of the disgruntled students making derogatory remarks here will most likely work less and expect an A at the end of the semester. The standard in Prof class is high so if you are lazy student and want an easy path to pass her class then I'm sorry you not gonna survive.
Do not take her ever!!!!! She's terrible. You need to basically write an essay (5 paragraphs) every week on the topic that you learned. The programming assignments are always due on the week that you learn the main thing you need to do the assignment with, so there's no time to really understand what you're doing. The exams are also super specific.
I had Prof Deek for IT202 and found she was a terrific professor. A few semesters later I needed to take IT114 and I signed up for her class without hesitation. She is caring, knowledgeable and accessible to her students. Will you have to work in the course? Yes, but she is a fair grader and wants her students to succeed. MY ADVICE TAKE HER!!!!!!
This is by far the worst teacher Ive ever had in my entire life. Took her for two semesters for two classes. Will let the kids who cheat and just copy paste get 100% and then the kids who actually put in time and effort give them a bad grade and then be of no help in responses to will give very vague responses that end up giving you a bad grade.
I had Maura Deek for IT202 and IT114. She is one of the best professor I had. She replies to emails almost immediately! She grades fairly! She worked with me to resolve all my issues! She is accessible 7 days a week. I highly suggest her for both these courses! You will learn as well as succeed! Great professor! Could go on but out of characters!
Weekly essays in a technical course. There are a few hands-on assignments that are completely up to the student to learn themselves. Studying the course content does not suffice for the midterm. There are no posted lectures whatsoever. I would not recommend this Professor. My only compliment is that she is kind and quickly responds over email.
Terrific professor. She is kind and caring. She will help you any time you ask. The key is to ask! Literally has spent hours with me on assignments. Read her weekly emails to know what is important to know for the exams. Videos and websites to help with coding assignments! Truly enjoy this class and learned so much!
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. For IT202 she basically goes out of her way to come up with the most random and obscure questions possible for the exams. Good luck getting good grades on the midterm and final when the exam questions are needles in a haystack. Projects are unclear, making it easy for her to take points off. BAD
I just finished a GREAT semester with Professor Deek. She goes out of her way to help students. Her assignments really help you learn the material. She indicates what materials to focus on the exam and that is the material you are tested on. I would recommend her class to anyone who wants to become proficient in Web Programming!
Dodge this professor if you can. Essay every week that is just regurgitating the material read from a textbook. Tests make no sense just re-read the textbook and hope that the one sentence that is graded sticks. I learned nothing from this class and just used Youtube to pass assignments.
Bad professor. I'm basically self taught, any knowledge you get is either from the textbook or online. I took thus class as an elective and its the class that requires most of my time. The assignments are huge and you always have one to worry about. Not a good class.
Because the course is online, you have to basically teach yourself, although prof Deek is always more than happy to help. She replies to emails quickly and provides tons of useful feedback. Weekly short coding assignments with a discussion post and 5 somewhat lengthy projects total. If you put in some effort, you wont have to worry about passing.
Very horrible experience. Practically impossible to pass this class, not a joke. You will spend more time on this one class than all your other 3-4 classes combined. She assigns a 4 paragraph summary every week as well as coding work you have to figure out by yourself. Exams are made for you to fail and this is not just my experience. AVOID!
Prof Deek is an amazing instructor. So lucky to have had her as my instructor! I learned so much: HTML, JS, SQL and PHP. She's patient and caring. She posts a ton of material that is helpful in doing the assignments. She is accessible all week & at various times. Online course so you need to have good time management skills! Fair and quick grader!
Her work is very hard but the textbooks in her syllabus help prepare you for the content. She's also always available and most of the time will respond within the hour you email her. She's very lenient with grading too and is understanding if you ask for extensions.
Difficult projects and online textbook does not teach enough information. However, she is very helpful when you reach out to her and she lets you submit work past the deadline.
Look, if you considering taking this class online, she's a decent option at best. The workload is heavy, the projects take time, especially the 4th one, and the tests are really funny. She does respond very quick to questions but its that vague answer where she wants you to answer it. She'll give you the actual answer after a couple tries.
Professor Deek is gracious, kind and compassionate. As a non-traditional student I was struggling with the material so I reached out to her. She was amazing! She quickly stepped in to guide me. She was available and her encouragement helped me immensely. She truly cares about her students' well being and that they succeed in this course.
Prof Deek is a patient, understanding, and caring instructor. It is not easy to find a truly amazing teacher as dedicated to helping their students as she is. She is always responsive and helpful. This course has taught me more than any other class. Her assignments will push you, but at the same time help you to learn a lot. One of the BEST!
Multiple choice exams have all of the possible options for a questions. Talking about 8-10 options. Lecture can get HEAVY some weeks, heavy other weeks. Takes a lot of time, you can learn a lot but be prepared to only focus on this class at least 8-10 hours a week.
Essentially you will be teaching yourself, I personally have emailed her many times because of the amount of times her assignments have confused me. The projects seem easy but you get graded very harshly for the most minor of errors. Exams are a big joke regardless of how much you study. She really needs to revamp the format of this class.
Prof Deek is a exceptional professor. She gives great feedback throughout the semester. Everything has been a really good experience in this course. Her documentation for assignments are superior, well organized, easy to understand, and complete, even with more complex concepts. Exam questions come from her well documented recaps and PPT slides.
Truly enjoyed Prof Deek's class. I learned a lot of new useful material that can be applied to other courses and my own projects. The class is well organized. All the course material is posted before the start of the semester. Projects are challenging yet interesting and provide a great foundation in the fundamentals of HTML, JS, PHP and SQL.
She was kind and understanding as I went through a tough time this semester. She was always there to help and guide me. When I needed information or clarification she provided it. This course allowed me to learn the interaction between front end and the back end development. Really enjoyed the course and glad I took with Professor Deek.
Professor Deek did not do any direct teaching to the online students, all she did was grade our work. She was lenient however I could only rely on the online textbook to teach myself. Also using PHP is very outdated and I felt like it was a waste using that language.
Enjoyed this class with Prof Deek. Great online experience. Her weekly recaps, PPT slides and videos have a lot of helpful material that help with projects. She responds to emails immediately. She is always willing to help her students. She cares that they do well in the course. You will have to work in the course, but you will learn a lot!
Truly admire Prof Deek! She is the best professor I have taken classes with at NJIT. She is willing to help students understand & learn in her course. She's always quickly responding to student inquiries & contacts struggling students. She's well versed in the topics. Material is well organized. Can't say how much I loved/enjoyed the class & prof.
Although an online course, there's no lack of communication between students & professor. She makes sure students are keeping up by checking in with them. Personally, have asked for help & never felt I couldn't. She always kept that window of communication open. Amazing teacher & passionate about the success of her students. Would take her again!
Even though this section was taught asynchronously online, Maura did a fantastic job communicating information about the class and giving feedback on assignments which has made it super easy to understand the course material. Assignment instructions & feedback are clear. She's more involved and accessible than most in person professors.
Do yourself a massive favor and don't take her.
Genuinely the WORST professor ever.
She doesn't really teach; you are teaching yourself everything, but to be fair it's an online course. The main problem is the amount of work. The amount of time and effort I had to put into challenging courses such as physics was dwarfed by this class. Definitely the hardest class I've taken so far, when it doesn't need to be.
This professor gives a lot of work compared to the other it 202 section not taught by her. It can be really difficult to learn the actual material in this class because the workload is heavy and it will make you feel overwhelmed. Aldo the instructions for her projects are confusing.
HORRID professor. Do not take this class with her unless you want to put in 40 hours a week, just to get a B.
She is simply superb. Very caring and will help you until you learn it. If you want to be a well trained IT professional, take her class.
I have taken strictly online classes since I transfered to NJIT. Maura Deek ran the best online class among all the courses I have taken. Also she was the most helpful and available. There is a lot of content material that she developed to supplement the text. Too much work but that is how I learned my web development skills that got me a job.
Average 100 pages PP slides aweek which is really fun. And if you are tired of reading, you can watch the early 1900s learning videos that have like 140p quality at best, will make you wear glasses even if you don't wear ones and still will not see anything, not to mention they are using windows 7 or XP which have went extinct very long time ago.
Always available to help with course material and programming assignments. By the far the best online course and instructor I have taken at NJIT. The technical content of the course is absolutely essential for my full stack developer/manager job.
The assignments are challenging but Professor Maura Deek is very helpful and explains what is going on with your programming errors and how to fix them. The lecture slides are comprehensive and long but much better than any book I have used. A lot to read but very useful and up to date content.
A great professor who expects students to give good effort during the semester if they want to earn the A. I would happily take her again and feel that I learned a lot during in the class!
Best coding professor I have ever had, is so quick to grade and is extremely fair, checks her emails and responds very quickly, is very dedicated to making sure every student has a fair chance in her class and loves to see her students figuring things out and learning
I found Maura to be one of the most compassionate and fair professors I have taken at NJIT. Her accessibility and proactive approach in a asynchronous course went above and beyond any face to face instructors I have had. She has an excellent grasp of the material and I would recommend her class to anyone wanting to learn Web Development skills.
Maura was very helpful and was happy meet outside of class to discuss questions and concerns. She promptly responds to all concerns even during late nights and weekends. Easier to reach than professors I see in person. She grades promptly and gives good feedback. Maura wants her students to succeed and helps them to do so in any way she can.
This is an asynchronous course, but you would not know it as the prof is very accessible. She is very attentive of her students and quickly responds to any concerns that students have. She actively reaches out to students to see if they need help. She is very dedicated to making sure every student has a fair chance in her class. Truly a great prof
nice professor but for the love of god dont take her class if you want to pass it202 idk where these good reviews are coming from, most likely people that just happened to do well or bots
Just finished an amazing semester with Maura. She was kind, caring and knowledgeable. She does an excellent job being present as an online instructor. She was very patient with me and gave me guidance throughout the semester. Learned a lot of valuable skills that will be useful as I finish my degree and start working in the IT field.
Professor Maura was a very difficult professor. Her class included a lot of assignments, and she didn't provide helpful feedback—she would just say something was missing, leaving you guessing. The projects were extremely large, and I feel like the class should have been easier, especially since it's a 200-level course.
I do not understood the complaints about Professor Deek. I had her last semster and she was nothing but helpful. She providesd numerous resources for students including herself as a resource. My opinion is the individuals complaining about the course and the professor don't want to put in the effort needed to do well and excel in the course.
Deeks class is not for the week. Material feels like it's 10+ years old. Homework, projects, and quizzes/tests all do in the same week that will keep you up ALL night. Turn in all your work, and you'll be fine. Everyone at NJIT talks about the Libby curve, but the Deek curve is INSANE. So if you can just stick it out.
Exams are 60% of the class and insanely difficult. Weekly homework + quizzes with 5 projects. Lock in for Project 4 and start when it is assigned. TAs are more helpful with questions as Deek doesn't explain well in emails, but she will explain why you lost points on something if asked. Curves a literal letter because everybody sucks at the exams.
Professor Deek did have a lot of work over the week however I never felt myself crunched for time trying to finish them. Projects 1 and 2 Seemed to be really difficult however the last 2 were extremely easy to me. Exams were most of the grade like other reviews said so be ready however she does curve a letter grade at the end. Explains lost points.
