WOW very boring class, but very easy. Teacher might be crazy............
this lady is so boring u fall asleep in the hallway on the way to class.
She does lecture a lot, and it is boring at times... all lectures are. If you're interested in what she's talking about, though, and you can stay focused, the class becomes very interesting. Note taking is a must, though.
She's a very smart woman who is a wonderful professor.
DON'T take at 8:30! very quiet woman. Nice woman, and very smart, but very monotone
you wish you were a part of western civilization just so you wouldn't have to listen to her talk anymore
She Is A Great Teacher, I Learned So Much. She Is Very Understanding If You Miss Class As Long As You Have A Reason
she is a great teacher and her course style is not hard at all and interesting for the most part! take her class
Great lady, teaching is pretty good compared to other history teachers. She loves history and has a passion for teaching
She is a great teacher and the course is actually interesting if you give it a chance. The workload is definitely doable, not too tedious at all. Great teacher, great lady!
Her lecturing can be very boring but if you pay attention, there's nothing to worry about. The quotes keep you into the class so you don't stray away and she's more lenient than I thought in the beginning.
Not understanding or helpful to special needs of disabled students. Failed her class, then got an A in another professor's western civ class. Also, get ready to fall asleep no matter how hard to try to pay attention.
Best proffesor ever!! Took her class twice. Very passionate in her lectures. I learned more in that class then in any other. SHe is very understanding and leniant in her grading.
Very boring teacher. Her classes consist of lectures and i dont recommend taking her class in the morning and listening to her monotone voice to wake you up.
Look, no teacher is just going to throw you an A... well, esptein in ma117... but other than that you have to try and work for it. if you just read the main text book for this class, it's a simple breeze. pay attention in class and participate and you'll get yourself an A. just put some effort.
she is boring, but if you have a fun class she will have fun with them. she can joke around and it's always good to have a teacher that cancels class a lot. i did not get an A, but if i had done better on the tests i would have.
Dorment is a great proffesor. Go to class and listen to what she is saying and you will pass. She gives a writing assingment that goes on for the whole semester but in the end that replaces the term paper. She loves what she is teaching and just wants everyone to do well.
just go to class and take notes on what she says you dont even really need the text book, but u do need the source book. the quote project is fun to do and easy, i loves her so i took her for both classes!
amazing teacher, helped a lot and understood any problem you might have
does not teach, unorganized, bad notes
She is the sweetest lady ever. You talk about current events a lot which is way more interesting than Western Civ. As long as you do the work, you'll get a good grade. Def. the best teacher that teachers Western Civ!
Bad notes, monotone, and boring as hell
Take this class. It is very easy, but you learn quite a bit. The tests are everything out of the notes from lectures. She gives one project, the wuote project which if you do it right, you should get a 100 on. Take this class.
very boring! Class was pretty easy but she wasnt much help. I missed classes b/c I was in the hospital & she didnt help me catch up. She marked me down & gave me a C+ for handing in a few things that were late- tho i had a note b/c I was in the hospital! thought she was nice, not any more-very moody
Not very helpful .. kinda hard if you do the work. Make sure you take notes and everything because you'll really be behind if you don't. DO THE QUOTE PROJECT!!! it helps your grade. Tests are not too bad if u take notes and pay attention!!
Great teacher, nice lady. Very helpful. Tests are easy as long as you study. Be prepared to take notes, all she does is lecture. But if you do well on all her tests which are very easy you'll get an A. I took her class twice and got A's in both.
EXCELLENT TEACHER, ALL SHE DID WAS LECTURE...TAKE NOTES AND YOU'LL DO FINE...TEST WERE EASY
I had Dorment at 8:30am and despite what many say, I didn't fall asleep to the class being exceptionally boring. Infact, I thought the class was pretty interesting, as long as you keep up with the reading. The quotes pissed me off a litte, but in the end it was all good. i don't want to knock the class either cuz i met my gf through that class!
1. DO the Quote project. 2. Take notes. You'll be fine. tests are based off the notes. exclusively.
All you have to do is take good notes, and ull ace the tests. Class can get boring at times, she also rambles on about her personal life, def not interested.
very nice lady.. however that class is so boring.. she talks too fast for you to write down notes.. i have trouble staying awake.. overall, if you like history take her, if you dont take someone else.. she's not an easy grader

The best class out of my entire first semester! She is so helpful! Great teacher, very funny. Take notes and do the quote project and you will be fine. She tells you what to study for the tests. Participate a lot and she will love you! Also, she loves it when students are creative! So be creative with the quote project for an easy A!Take her class!
She's an ok teacher, she can be tough. DO THE QUOTES THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER (SERIOUSLY). Her tests are nasty- so read. It's boring- but you'll pass. Participation is key in this class- she'll love you if you do! (Trust me)
Very hard grader, but I was terrible with history to begin with. Lectures the whole time, talks very quickly, and hard to understand exactly who she is talking about. If you're good at history you'll do fine. Tests are essay form and grades tough. Quote project is annoying, but do a project instead of a paper for the end of it. She loves it.
Absolutely wonderful person! Funny, helpful and willing to have discussions about current events and the world. Professor Dorment obviously thinks about her syllabus, and the quote project is a fun and low stress assignment. Do it periodically and relate it to current events. Take notes! Some people believe she speaks quickly; try a tape recorder!
Dorment is the best.. anyone who thinks otherwise definately does not appreciate a good teacher
the absolute best history professor, shes so nice and extremely clear with information. it doesnt seem like lecture, more like just a chat with the class. work load isnt bad at all, i wish she taught every history course at monmouth, i would always take her!
Dorment is a great teacher. she gives like 3 or 4 tests and they are all essays but she goes over the material thats gonna be on the test beforehand, so you know what to expect. she goes by the syllabus with the readings and you have to hand in 10 quotes over the course of the semester and do a project at the end. i would take her agian
Victorian Culture was my second class with Professor Dorment and I absolutely love her! Shes very helpful, interesting and always has great discussions in class. However this is ALOT of reading and writing, but you can get by with just skimming or taking really good notes! 3 exams, short papers due every week but worth it! Def take her!
she is an awful teacher, shes mean and picks favorites. not helpful at all speaks to fast and hard to understand. Tests are all essay and hard. DONT TAKE HER!
Had her for Victorian Culture. Wasn't a bad class, but it was hard to get into it. Very knowledgeable about what she teaches. Class was far outside my field of study but managed to pass pretty well, so its not impossible. Prepare for a good challenge if you take the plunge.
Maureen is the best - - She is an incredibly helpful human being who is genuinely interested in her students' success and their paper topics. She made the Research Seminar a breeze and an absolute pleasure to do. She gives credit where credit is do and is the most down to Earth professor in the history department.
What an awesome professor. She is probably one of the most well educated individuals I've personally ever met. She offers a new, interesting perspective to everything (Past to Current Politics). She is very approachable and to this day we still talk frequently. I highly recommend her for everyone, not just Honors students. Amazing Professor!!
She is a great professor who really knows her subject. She knows so many random historical facts and brings them up in class to make the topics more interesting. I had fun with her class even though it was an 830. And as an advisor she was really helpful and soo sweet!
I took her for honors w civ 102. The quote project she has is a drag, I had tons of reading to do constantly, and I took SO many notes. She's a great teacher, I'm just not into any sort of history, so this class was torture for me...
She's a great teacher, very smart and concise. Always willing to have a discussion (current events at the beginning of each class). Reading for every class and a fair amount of writing too. She prepares you well for the exams. If you put in the effort, you'll do fine. Highly recommend.
She is an absolute saint. The sweetest women Ive ever met and wants everyone to do well. 3 tests and a project, but she tells you exactly whats on everything. I learned so much and she keeps it interesting. She is a perfect professor and my favorite one at Monmouth. Just keep up with the quotes and her class is fine.DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TAKE HER.
Great teacher, light work load. Do the readings assigned to keep up with class discussion and you will do fine. There isn't hw everynight but you have to do 10 quotes through out the semester. Not bad at all. Take Her!
We didn't study western civilization at all. Instead we studied worthless documents. There are two grades in the class and if you do bad on one its over for you. There is no point in studying history through dumb documents and having to memorize worthless writers who had no impact on the actual world at all. Avoid her class if you want to learn.
Kind of strict but if you participate and make an effort she will love you. Do the work, take good notes and you'll do fine.
TAKE HER! I had her for honors Western Civ and she was amazing. One of my favorite professors at Monmouth. No exams (for honors) just papers. Work load is very do-able, interesting, and helps when writing your papers. Sweetest woman you'll ever meet.
Dorment is an extremely nice woman who really is passionate about history. She never minds clarifying material and always does reviews the class before the test so you literally know exactly what to prepare yourself for. Theres 10 quotes you need to do, but an easy 20% of your grade. Take good notes, listen, and participate; you'll do great
She is one of the nicest and sweetest ladies I have ever met! I'm a business major but she made the class and material interesting. She pretty much lectures the whole time but if she asks a question, raise your hand. She will really appreciate it and love you. There were only three exams (including the final) and the layouts are exactly the same.
Professor Dorment is really nice. She lectures each class, which can get extremely boring and for homework you have to interpret documents and analyze quotes. There's only a few exams but it is all open ended. It is a challenging class and I only recommend taking her class if you're willing to put in a lot of time and effort.
Very nice lady and helps out a lot when you visit her for office hours and such. Her class was pretty tough for me. As long as you put time and effort into this, you'll get by with the B range
Professor dorments class was challenging but she offered so much extra help. She had available office hours always and would do what it took for you to get an A or B. I truly did like her a lot
I had her for western civ 1. She really knows what she's talking about and is willing to help those who don't understand the material. Her tests aren't easy but as long as you study what she gives you, you'll be fine! Pretty easy workload - just some quote write ups. Great class!
She is very boring, her lectures are never engaging and make the most interesting subjects a snooze fest. She isn't very helpful if you don't understand the material or an assignment she gives out, and takes forever to answer your emails. Her exams are all blue book essays and are pretty easy.
Professor Dorment is such a sweet woman. I had her for first year seminar, it dealt with culture war in America. It was actually really interesting. She gave a lot of papers for a first year seminar class, but they were easy reaction papers. She always wants to know what is going on in the world and likes when you participate.
She is a lovely lady. Her lectures are very boring but just deal with them. There is three tests and the easiest homework ever. She gives take home exams so you can use your notes. Very easy! TAKE HER!
The clarity of her lecture days are awesome but when it comes to essays and prompts YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. She makes comments like "no" and "not a good sentence" and doesn't even give you a real prompt for the essay. The class overall is easy but you have to fend for yourself with creating an essay. She does grade them easily though. She is sweet.
she loves jesus
Dorment was a great professor. She talks a lot and classes consist of mainly lectures, but it was a fairly easy class if you like history. Shes a little bit of a tough grader because, but overall it was a great class. If you are looking for a good class to take, I would definitely recommend her. She's very nice and there to help you if you need it.
She speaks incredibly fast and doesn't have power points or anything online to refer back to. It is imperative that you take notes and you must pay attention every minute. Never lets class out early. Grades papers tough and doesn't explain why she took points off. Nice lady, bad teacher.
Professor Dorment is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. However, her class is basically a lecture where she talks the whole time and you just listen. It can get boring but just sit there and listen. The class before an exam is key because she tells you what will be on the exam. There are only 3 exams so take them serious.
Professor Dorment was my favorite professor last semester! She assigned readings for every class, and in order to do well on the tests you have to know the readings. If you pay attention to her lectures and take good notes, you will do very well. She is very willing to help you catch up if you find yourself struggling. I'd definitely take her again
The bane of my 2nd semester of college. DO NOT take her. She has no knowledge on how to teach millennials. The culture is constantly shifting &she fails to keep up with us. Her lectures are mundane&drag on for the entire period, she writes little to nothing down&tries to cram too much info. There is absolutely no thinking for yourself in that class
Does not teach, she reads off of a paper at us. No visual aids. Tests are unbelievably hard and to be honest she is rude fir no reason. You can try your hardest in this class and still not get higher than a B+.
I love Dorment she is so sweet and nice but she is a tough grader and assigns a lot of reading.
She speaks incredibly fast and goes on and on for the entire period. she rarely writes stuff on the board. No visual aids. lectures are never engaging. tries to cram too much info. you cant lose your focus for a second. assigns a lot of reading. for homework you have to interpret documents. VERY TOUGH GRADER!
Maureen is the OG. She loves what she teaches and only one exam was in class - our second exam and final exam were both take-home papers. There's a quote project that lasts the whole semester - do one a week and you'll be fine. Show up to class and take notes and you'll be fine. DO THE READINGS, but it's not VITAL if you can skim easily.
Lovely professor if you show up. Lectures every day and reading for every class (reading necessary for the work but only needed for in-class participation.) Very few essays, ten one page papers due for a simple final project. Helps if you get to know her and establish a relationship.
She is a very tough grader. She rarely ever puts anything on the board & if she does put something up, it is just a list of a few topics she is going to lecture about. she speaks fast and sometimes it is unclear what she is saying. its hard to focus in her class because it is incredibly boring. Its hard to take notes to go along with her lectures.
Professor Dorment was an amazing professor. She was my first college professor and I really enjoyed her class. She started off class by asking whats new in the world? And we were encouraged to talk and share our opinions. Her insight is fantastic and he is very knwoeldgable about history. And she also tells amazing, funny stories! Great teacher!
Professor Dorment is the sweetest human being in the world!!! If you show you care about her class, she will love you. A lot of papers and she is a tough grader, and you read SO MUCH! I would take her though if you have the chance.
DO NOT TAKE. I AM WARNING YOU RIGHT NOW. DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF.
I regret taking her. I don't know what I was thinking when I signed up for the class.
Professor Dorment is a tough teacher. She assigns MANY papers, in which she grades very strictly. Her class involves countless hours of reading in the textbook and coming prepared to class ready to discuss what you've been assigned to read. Participation counts 15% towards your grade, you can't just sit and not speak, participation is crucial.
Professor Dorment is a fantastic professor. She makes history come alive. Her class is very lecture heavy and that can be hard at times to take notes, but she is very knowledgeable about the topic. She is a tough grader and does make you work for it. BUT SHE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR! TAKE HER!
Tough grader. Her lectures are long and boring. You learn through documents- not through actual textbook facts. There is a quote project- write 10 quotes throughout the semester about each chapter. Follow the directions and reword the textbook to try to get a 10. Tests- you have to memorize the authors and know each document. Overall a pain!
I went to her multiple times to find out why I was getting bad grades and she was never clear. She writes the same feedback and no one ever knows what it means. I even went to people who got good grades and asked them what I did differently and they never understood why I was getting those grades. She is a very harsh grader.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Gives bad grades for literally no reason. Very mean and does not work with you or care about you at all.
Her lectures are super boring and long. She is also a tough grader and no matter how hard I studied I never got better than a B on her exams. However, she has you read documents which is actually helpful and you will learn something.
She's a nice woman and cares about her job. She's super knowledgeable about history and gives good lectures. However, she's so insanely political that it's overwhelming. The entire class is based on her political opinion and she guilts you if you don't feel the same way she does.
Dr. Dorment is the absolute best. She cares for every student as if they were part of her own family.
she is a very knowledgeable teacher about history. Her class is very boring and she does pick favorites. I had just handed in my final and she gave me a 0 on it when I did the prompt and everything right, I knew it was right because I had checked with my fellow classmates. the feedback I received for my final was " what are you thinking", 0/100 no.
There are a lot of readings, but that's every history course basically. There were no exams but 3 essays. I am not a big fan of history, so the lecture was boring for me. However, this class is doable since this class is not based on memorizing. I highly recommend this class with Dr. Dorment over other professors.
She seems passionate about history, and she's also very nice. But as a teacher, she is very curt and strict. Her feedback is short and vague ("Not really", "No", and "This is wrong" followed by an entire paragraph highlighted). Her projects are cool, but it's hard to do well. Don't take her unless you're able to pay attention to a history lecture.
Dr. Dorment is something... her grading is absolutely atrocious, I have gotten feedback that says "OK.", "NOT REALLY.", "You missed the point." and overall negative feedback without ways to improve, I speak for the whole class when I say that. She is a nice lady at times but grading is terrible, still left with an A-! Make sure to participate!
The professor herself is nice and she's a good person, but there are easier classes that you can take to fill in this requirement. She makes you write 3-5 page papers three times throughout the class, which she grades toughly. Overall she is also a tough grader and I wouldn't recommend her.
She is very strict and traditional. Her lectures are just her talking, no powerpoints. She is very educated and it was clear she knew what she was talking about. She's a pretty tough grader and there's no homework, just three papers and a project in the semester. Overall, not a bad professor or class, but make sure you take notes
As someone who knows very little history, she had my attention the whole time. She rarely ever uses powerpoints so write down all the things she says. Her quizzes and tests are often open book / open notes. She's very considerate and not hard on attendance if you contact her. I was absent at least 3/4 times and still got an a.
no tech allowed not a lot of homework but alot of essays and quote assignments very little info on slides and they are not posted online so if you miss one day you are lost as the textbook does nothing
Make sure to take notes and do not get behind on the quote project. Class is pretty interesting even if you do not like history because she is always ready to talk about any current events. If you did well in high school history/ understood it, then you will not have to study very much.
Professor Dorment is a knowledgeable lecturer, though her strict teaching style and heavy workload can be challenging. Engage with the material, use Unstuck AI for study prep, and you'll do well.
she is very knowledgeable and knows what she is talking about. she does NOT post her slides on ecampus. she only lets you handwrite notes, no computer. her lectures are very organized. a lot of the notes are verbal; she doesnt write a lot on slideshows. she mainly talks, so i suggest audio recording the lecture.
Her lectures are based on what she says. Her slideshows have 10-15 words on them MAX. You have to pay lots of attention to what she says because that is the majority of your notes. She has no midterm or final--just in in-class essay. You must be very familiar with the material to do well on tests. But she is so knowledgeable, I love her.
She is very lecture heavy but there are not many assignments for the class. There are a few handwritten essays but she is not a harsh grader at all and is very understanding/accommodating. Class participation is very important in her courses.
Her class was brilliant. The topics I took were on 3 women across history: Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and Queen Victoria. She is an easy grader, if you do the work you pass. Put thought into how you perceive these women. HW: reading docs and a journal every Friday. The projects are 3 page essays that are unique and fun. I loved this class as fresh.
She does not know how to use anything online so communication with her is impossible. She has favorites in class and will favor their grade on that. She posts assignments with no instructions so it is very hard to do them. She makes do dates different than what it is on the syllabus and the syllabus schedule changes everyday.
She is one of the best professors I had all semester. The textbook is mandatory and you will have to read the night before. But she is very sweet and I never felt her having favorites, you either participated and she knew you or you just stayed silent. If you miss class and its on a essay day make sure to let her know and she is very flexible.
This course was honestly pretty light. This course was based on Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and Queen Victoria. She does talk a lot though, so just try to pretend you're listening. The workload was pretty light. Two journal entries a week, 3 essays, and one group project as the final (no midterm). There are no tests just essays and journals.
