Best teacher I've had at URI so far. Is clear, concise and helpful. Would highly recommend. It's clear she loves her job!
She obviously could care less about the students. She is always disorganized.

She was a good teacher and I learned a lot especially about current events. I enjoyed the recitations the most.
Very interesting lectures. you really learn a lot about current events which is important and not at all boring. Exams and homework are minimal and not very difficult. Deffinately take her class!
very knowledgable
this is a class that should be both interesting and informative; it is neither. the lectures are very bland and poorly presented, and like the the text book, auxillary to the course if you attend the recitations. serious students: take w/ prof. lamonica.
The best thing about this class is that you only have to go to it for exams. Outside of that, she's an annoying and shrill little woman who plays power games and says "SIR!!!" far too much.
Moakley's teaching leaves much to be desired she spends far too much time on current events my 7th grade american history class taught me more than this class ever could, avoid at all costs!
All she wants to talk about is current events. Read New York Times for this class. I never read the book, I just took good notes in class and in recitation and I got a 97. Easy class.
Good news to you, loyal reader. You're not the most boring person in the world. Moakley is. Concerns herself way too much with current events, and jams liberal BS down your throat. I know most of you students get off on that tho. You disgust me.
Very helpful and the class had good interactions.
if you know anything about the us government this should be easy for you. just keep up on current events and you'll be fine.
I had her for politcal science a few years ago. She is a total elitest. I think she aligns herself with the likes of Al Sharpton and Howard Dean. Oh yea and do not challange her on anything because she will count it against you. Can we say socialist.
The worst! Stay away at all costs! Makes no snse. Talks about everything but what is in the book. EXTREMELY Unclear..
Too much liberal and socialist BS, not enough teaching of AMERICAN POLITICS. Definately aligns herself with the likes of Mr Kerry and our "friends" overseas...France.
Professor Moakley is the best Professor I had at the University of Rhode Island. She has a keen interest in her students and encourages them to get involved, regardless of their political affiliation. By focusing on current events, Moakley demonstrates how relevant political history is.
Class is really easy...All you have to do is go to the recitation and you will get a good grade. Dont even bother going to class...she teaches nothing thats on the exam. I learned all in one 50 minute recitation per week.
Easy A. The tests are half current events and class is somewhat interesting. She tries to remain fair and balanced but there is not doubt in my mind that she is a hardcore liberal. Other than that you could do a lot worse than Moakley.
easy class and recitation. Just go and you'll be fine.
Class is a joke, Moakley is all over the map and unclear. Going to lecture is a waste of time. As long as you have a good TA and go to recitation your fine. She is a joke of a professor
Class is a joke, dont bother, go to every recitation she doesn't grade any of the work, recitation is important, she is nice and smart person but what she discusses has nothing to do with the text.
Easy class. You don't have to bother going to the lectures, just recitations. She is an interesting professor and teaches what she considers important(current events),much better in my opinion.May be a liberal, but does stay neutral.Listens to your opinion as long as you back yourself up.
She is a blatant democrat, but this is Rhode Island, I don't know where the rest of these people are from. Class is a joke though. Recitation, and a few papers. Easy A.
She has absolutly no concept of what teaching is, or how to do it. Waste of my timem and yours.
Oh please, don't take this class. "Waste of time" doesn't begin to explain it. And I'm liberal, and interested in Politics, so that's not it. She's just a terrible teacher. If you have to take it, don't go to class, just pray for a good TA (avoid Joe). But don't take it. Really.
She is a good teacher, just make sure you don't express your opinion too much in recitation unless it matches your TA's opinion. Mine screwed me out of an A. Plus she was a ****.
Pretty easy class, just show up to recitation and to class once in a while. She can bit off topic or unorganized sometimes but doesnt really effect your grade.
i liked this class alot it wasnt to challenging and she was a cool professor
Very clear yet uninspiring lecturer.
Good teacher though it's too bad that it was such a big lecture hall. Prof. Moakley is a great person to know for the future, whenever looking for govermental internships or just as a person who knows people. She's extremely intelligent.
alright teacher. more liberal than ted kennedy. goes through the powerpoints WAY too fast to take notes. exams are REALLY long and you barely finish within the 50 minutes you are alotted. all in all, it is an interesting and very basic class.
The class is boring and so is Moakley. Don't take it.
Tests were very difficult but thank God my TA was helpful...if you don't know anything about politics you will probably fail this class. and shes very liberal, sometimes its pretty annoying.
lectures are too boring
uses multimedia lectures that came with the book whats up with that??? i mean the class is a joke why are we paying for this - she doesn't have her own material its like high school and she's the dept chair i think, its a joke
PSC113 is a High School Civics class that shouldn't give anyone who went to high school and can read the Front page of a News paper any trouble. There is a a minor Research paper that counts for a small fraction of your final grade. Tests are long, but easy. Read the Front page of the Paper a few times a week and go to Recitation. This class defines EASY
Moakley is a waste of an hours lecture. She doesnt give you time to write the notes down and most of the time she goes off and nobody has a clue what shes talking about. I ended up with a B cause my TA Jack was awesome. Your TA will help you get through
She is nice but boring. The lecture is a waste of time just go to recitation.. you will probably fail the first test but then u understand what she wants..Kim is a sick TA
She is nice but boring. The lecture is a waste of time just go to recitation.. you will probably fail the first test but then u understand what she wants..Kim is a sick TA
Its just an hour to sleep. This woman couldn't capture the interest of a starving man if she had an arm full of food.
Maureen is the woman, anyone who thinks otherwise has obviously not given her a fair chance. She does care about the students and although she is uninteresting in lectures she is willing to help anyone who needs it. TAs are for saps..unless you have Jack Barry or Jessie. Kay ?
Moakly rocks! Seriously, she goes through the material really quickly (but the overheads are straight from the text- if you read, you'll be fine). If you ever get the chance to talk to her one on one she is phenomenal. I loved this clas, but if you're not into politics, it's pretty boring/dry.
I am not a big fan of this teacher. Her lectures are very boring. She goes through the slides very quickly, so don't plan on trying to write what's on them. She's kind of nice out of class. I would not recommend this class if your trying to knock off a gen. ed. An easy grade though if you read the book. Jack Barry is an awesome TA!
Somewhat of a big class, she talks a lot and she talks fast. She expects you to know everything and be able to participate in class. Very upfront and blunt. She's not the type to beat around the bush. One on one she's really nice, but in front of a student body she's really scary.
She is really boring. She flips through the slides really fast. The tests are pretty straightforward, but you have to study to do well. She's really liberal and isn't afraid to show her views throughout class. Jack is the best TA, and if you have him, you should do really well in the class.

Great class if your even remotely interested in US politics. Moakley is a very smart woman and good professor, tests are easy if you have half a brain. I took it for a gen ed and loved it!
A great teacher. Go to class, she basially tells you everything that you need for tests if you just listen. I would say take notes and read the sections of the book that she goes over, some major topics in chapters are not even mentoned. The TA's are really helpful as well so go to your classes with them and the review sessions they offer for test
I wish I'd signed up for this class with another professor. While the class wasn't terribly difficult, she was very short (pretty much to the point of being rude) if you had a question during her office hours. This is a good example of a professor that knows the material but has no interpersonal skills.
Great teacher. Interesting discussions, exams are very easy if you study.
Useless useless and more useless. She was my advisor for 2 years, signed my intent to graduate form, I graduated, the school told me I had to take another class and she lied about signing my form. Don't go to her for anything she will not go out of her way to help you at all , and it may end up hurting you in the end.Seems her students come 2nd.

Solid teacher, comes across very clearly, not too difficult, extremely helpful if you just make the effort to talk to her after class. highly recommend
The class wouldn't be so hard if she actually taught what was on the test. Only reason to go to class is because she takes attendance in a lecture hall which is absurd (no one would go to class if she didn't take attendance). She is a good speaker but not a good teacher for a class.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! She is very good at what she does...she gives excellent notes just make sure you can write or type fast to keep up! KEEP UP WITH THE READING!!! Her class is fast paced so if you don't keep up you'll be left behind! Make sure you read the NY times!
Screaming Liberal!! Conservatives Beware! Class is EXTREAMLY biased, and she does a horrible job of pretending to be neutral. Students are supposed to read the "New York Times", a newspaper which is a disgrace to journalism and cannot be considered, ?fair and balanced?. She reiterates the same information every day, making it almost unimportant
Screaming Liberal, Conservatives Beware! She EXTREAMLY biased and she does a horrible job of pretending to be neutral. Students are supposed to read the "New York Times" a newspaper not very, ?fair and balanced?. The tests are easy..and the TAs are really nice and do a very good job of explaining the information she previously tried to present.
All of you people are idiots. Obviously introductory classes suck because there are hundreds of people. take REAL class with her and you'll realize she is SO nice. A mid-term (that she gives u the questions beforehand) a group powerpoint, and a final are your grades. Pretty easy A. She is SO nice to us and class is really interesting. TAKE IT!
Moakley is SO nice. The introductory class may suck, but take another. A midterm that she gives u the questions, a powerpoint that u basically watch youtube, and a final. We watched SNL every class. She is super funny encourages conversation and really smart. This class was awesome. Maureen has a bad rep from stupid kids. Take it, you'll see easy A
Knows what she is talking about! Hard to say because the class was so large, but it seemed like she talked in circles sometimes. TAs are very helpful and reiterate what she said in class. Easy A. Seems like a nice person...
Definitly take this class! It is extremely easy and moakley and really nice. She can fly through notes, but a lot of it is common sense anyway. Textbook is really easy to read. Awesome teacher!!!
This is a really easy class but you learn a lot. If you go to class and pay some attention, you will get a good grade. Keep up with the readings and you may be in an A/A- range. 3 midterms and a 3 page paper is all you do in this class. Shes really clear and helpful, and you learn a lot in the class.
Theres more to this stuff than how many congressmen and senators there are and how long their terms last, yet she spent a whole unit on that alone. She didn't talk about the founding fathers intentions at all, which is imperative for this subject. Take it for a gen ed, not as a poli sci gen ed, it will not leave you prepared for further polisci.
Attendance is mandatory, but she takes it with a clicker. If you don't want to go one day, give your clicker to someone so they can click you in. Class is taught around current events. 3 exams, a paper, and an oral presentation. Not a horrible class. Take as a gen ed.
nice woman... but i had no idea what she was talking about half of the time
class is an absolute joke, but incredibly boring. she is without a doubt a liberal, but conservatives will be fine in the class. if you understand politics you never have to study
Professor Moakley is a good teacher, but the class should not be called "American Government." It should be called "Modern Politics" or something. Most of what we cover is current events. In the recitation, you go over the book but in class book coverage is rare. The clicker questions and polls are easy. The tests aren't too hard. Good class.
Not the most difficult class. But it should not be called "American Government". She focuses a lot on modern politics and current events. If it weren't for the recitation, I would have no idea what was in the book. It's not a terrible class.
Moakley is a good prof. She knows her stuff and I loved that the class is mostly about current events...it makes it less like a history class and more relatable if you follow current events which you must do in this class...go to recitation it helps a lot and if you memorize the definitions in the textbook and the IDs you will get an A
You don't typically interact with her directly, but she's funny and friendly if you need help with anything. Keeps the material interesting and is very clear about what you'll be tested in. Review for tests in your recitation. You have to check in at the end of class on your iClick (or whatever it's called) so you should attend class.
She's a really good teacher if you're interested in Poli Sci. Read the book and pay attention in class. Anything she says in class can be on the test, even if it's a random person she mentioned once. TA's a really helpful with letting you know what might be on tests
Like many others have said, she focuses a lot on modern politics. Tends to read through the slides too fast to allow for writing or cogitation. She will teach until the exact minute, and not let you out until that minute. Overall, a decent professor, but she really needs a Sakai page to post the slides.
eh if you have to take it take it with her its pretty easy if you don't have to take it but want a PSC as a gen ed I suggest hutchison's international psc
she does alot on current events during class and by the time she finally gets to what shes going over she flies through the slides because we are either short on time or she doesn't realize that her students haven't been looking at the same material as her for the past 20 years. overall its not a hard class. i fell asleep a few times to be honest.
I love this woman. I was always excited for class. She is engaging and calls on you for your opinion. My nickname for her is Mama Moakley and she reminds me of my grandma in the best way possible! Take her class!!
She's a nice lady but she ONLY talks about current events. Took the class during the presidential election and that's ALL she talked about. When she does talk about the material she moves through the slides too fast. The exams aren't hard and the recitation projects are easy. Good class to catch up on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
Very easy class, didn't need to take notes. Mostly common knowledge stuff. Loves to talk about current issues and seems like the rest is lost due to lack of time. Only two exams, one paper, one project then the final.
Would not recommend taking this class with this professor. The professor isn't as bad as the TA's. The TA's are the ones who grade the exams and papers. So you grade is in the hands of TA's. Some TA's grade easy and some grade harder. So the way your graded will depend upon which TA you receive.
She is great. She is nice but stay on your toes, she is extremely knowledgeable and sharp. The RI Politics class was fun and VERY informative. Not hard at all to succeed if you attend and do the work.
She has a little bit of an attitude. Makes her TAs do everything. Powerpoint slides are very messy. No computers/cell phones. Attendance click in at the beginning or end of class. Recitation is where you do most work and TAs do the grading. Tests aren't too bad, make sure to keep up to date with current events
Good teacher, mostly focuses on main events. Tests consist of MEMORIZATION, if you don't memorize all the material you will not do good on the test knowing that they are a word and you have to define them all. I got lucky with a good TA and did well in the class. Moakley moves very fast but is knowlegeable.
She is a great Teacher and really tries to make sure that the class understands to topics that she goes over. *taking notes is essential*
She's a very nice woman, tries to make class fun, but she is always extremely disorganized. Slides don't make any sense, talks very fast. Recitation helps a little but but I never felt very prepared for any of the tests. She tries to get people to be too involved for a lecture. Wouldn't recommend unless you're a political science major.
Maureen Moakley is a champ and her scarf game is on point.
Despise this woman and despise her class. Avoid if you can.
This class was paired with a recitation section. Lecture was easy, but attendance is necessary. You must keep up with current events. Moakley is nice and funny. Class discussions were really good and active.
Professor Moakley really cares about this course and her students. Im not a PoliSci major and this course was relatively easy if you attend class. Many people complain about the exams but they are not bad if you study, even for just an hour. Overall, this course was relatively easy and Moakley's daily current event coverage made it interesting.
I am not a Political Science major. This class was interesting. She makes lectures interesting, with all the current events. Definitely must go to recitations. The exams are very lengthy, only short answer and open response- but the grading is easy, and if you study for a decent amount of time they are very easy. Do all work and you will do fine.
She is a good professor, but doesnt respond well to criticism with her teaching style. She was very rude when someone suggested a study guide.
Moakley is a very well developed professor who seems to care a lot about her profession. However, she always skips through the slides quickly without discussing the topic and just talks the whole class with limited participation, and when she does want it, she gets mad if no one talks. But tests are very easy, study terms, you will pass with an A.
Moakley wants you to pass but doesn't help when she speeds through the slides. She's very fun and likes to hear your opinions. Attendance is important especially for recitation. Not a huge political science fan but would take another class with her again. Make sure you keep up with Mind Tap readings!
Im not a poli sci major. I had to study more for her exams than I did for my 400 level classes. 6 chapters per exam. No study guide. Skips through slides quickly so taking notes is hard because she doesnt allow laptops. Doesnt post PowerPoints until last second - forces you to cram for hours to study. Recitation wasnt helpful. Avoid if you can.
PSC113 is a very interesting class whether you are a Political Science fan or not. Maureen Moakley wants you to do good in her class as well as whoever your Recitation TA is. Total of 3 tests with the last one being the final exam. Attendance and homework grade help out final grade by a lot even if one does not do well on exams.
She is a well qualified professor, but her lectures were way too boring. Often skips past slides quickly without going too in depth of the topic. Would not recommend taking her class. But it's an easy A.
Lecture heavy, lost a lot of students interests and attendance is taken by clicker soooo.... Have to read a lot, I was not the best at that and it ended up being my lowest grade. Recitations a lot more interesting than the actual lecture but there are pop quizzes which makes up recitation grade. Expensive texts book and access code
She's very mediocre, you won't hate her but probably won't love her. Most of the work is done in recitation with TAs so you won't get a chance to know her too well. She's reasonable with work loads, her tests are pretty hard, no papers to write. I like her but she's not inspirational or super engaging.
