Vaguevaguevague... If she were 10 years younger, she'd be SO DAMN HOT... too bad
Great teacher
an okay class... very nice woman.
I swear I become less intelligent in this womans class. Most days I spent trying to guess which form of narcotics she was on.
This prof was definatley a little unclear at times but very helpful outside of class. This is a 1st year college course, she did what she could with all the highschool level students
Like her style but very busy and help is hard to get. She is also very unclear (More detail but too much deatail?) What the hell am i supposed to do?
Totally uncool teacher. She places emphasis on all the wrong areas of English. No time to peer edit papers, yet hard marker
Extremely helpfull teacher. She actually reads your essays and thinks about them while marking(crazy, I know). Can be sarcastic and rude, but hey what are you a baby, just dish it back. She is a better teacher for people who like writting(not science).
Maureen is the most helpful instructor at camosun! I hadn't been to school in 20yrs and she helped me so much. Got an A in the course. Excellent person, and smart as hell, humble too. Thanks
i think maureen is a helpful teacher, i learned lots in her class and hope to improve more
Sometimes a complete nut case. Places emphasis on assignments not worth any marks, and hardly enough on the major assignments. Jumps all over the place with the material, and alot of useless classes. find another english teacher for this class.
If you don't like people wasting your time, stay away from this proff!! Jumps around course content all semester, no time to hone skills. Lots of time doing assignments worth little or no marks, leaving no time for the important assignments like 40% essay
took a class from her in 2002 and it was fun, lots of work but i noticed an improvement in my writing skills, she made it easier for me to write essays for other classes. If ur not scared of work and effort i reccommend her
Very helpful and understanding. Can be a sarcastic **** at times, therefore, she must be taken lightly. I recommend this class to witty, intelligent students.
horrible person, how the hell did she manage to get a job as a teacher?
two thumbs WAY down. Talk about a scatterbrain. Can never get a hold of her and she makes you do a lot of useless busy work, yet makes it worth lots of marks. Unclear, inconsistant marking.
Maureen helped me put words onto paper. She gave me the tools to write essays and clear thoughts. Her class was interesting and fun as well as challenging.
maureen is the best prof ive ever had, all you guys who says she gives too much work are just lazy, this isn't hghschool anymore folks! if you want to learn anything you have to do some work, and she is always available for you if you need help
What a great prof! Very helpful and was always willing to take a look at my work before the due date to help fix the problems.
Maureen was very helpful, accessible, and sympathetic when I ended up failing her course due to personal problems. My class was full of whiners, when they snarked, she snarked right back. The coursework wasn't very stimulating, but easy and learnable.
she's a gd prof. She was clear and her class is easy. strongly suggest.
Incredibly abstract. If you want to spend your class time analyzing paintings in an english class she for you. Never has her sh@! together. Got a good mark in her class but I have no idea how. However, nice person. Many in my class dropped out after two assignments.
so this is what happens... you think your decent at english... you right an essay... you get her to check it over... you revise it to make her happy... you hand it in... you get it back... you get a mark that's far lower then what you had in mind... its kind of a cycle! maybe try another prof?
I liked her alot and her teaching was fine. She knows alot about good literature and can help anyone who is willing to learn how to write.
Definitly not impressed with this teacher. Thorough critique of assignments. However her connection with students was lacking. In addition her final exam was of a bogus nature. A final exam for english... doesn't make sense does it. Cannot maintain a steady train of thought. Was really distracting.
Maureen is one of the best profs! She's open to letting you revise your papers and will take time to connect with you. She keeps the class real and inovative. If you think the class is too much work, you're probably straight out of highschool. welcome to the real world kiddies!!!!
abstract, intelligent, outgoing teacher.totally unorganized, late, running behind almost ALL the time.learned lots. overall someone with the letters DR in front of their name should be way more organized and professional. easy to fix.
maureen is a wonderfully nice lady. she is approachable, understanding, and helpful. she's alive and into her subject, which is refreshing. I read some other comment about her, stating she is overweight??? crazyness! this lady is in great shape! maureen is fun.if you work hard you will enjoy her.
Maureen is a fantastic teacher. She brings the class together like no other professor. Assignments have gobs of feedback on them, showing that she truly cares about how each student is doing in the course. If you like a monotone teacher, then don't take this course. Otherwise, enjoy!
You rock!
Very easy to get along with, and an excellent marker of papers. Theres lots of work, but its all good stuff. Class participation is her big thing, so if your super shy i would think twice, but shes pretty hot so its worth it. I give you an (A) Maureen.
If you're looking to take the classic half-assed approach to English (like me), Maureen is not the right prof for you. She's very passionate about the course material and expects the same from her students. One positive note, she's really easy to talk to and always willing to help.

Maureen loves what she teaches. Gives tons of feedback on all essays. Be careful class participation is a must for her! Not a class to take if you want to slip by with an easy mark.
I hated this class a lot / Frequently gave tiny busy work assignments that were pointless / Passionate about subject / Ridiculously picky w/essays but gives TONS of feedback on essays, which is very useful / Generally nice and approachable but I often found her to be extremely patronizing to students / Exams are ridiculously unfair
Maureen is the sweetness most helpful teacher I have ever had! She makes this class so much fun with her everlasting energy! She's extermely helpful and full of positive feedback. I'd recommend her to anyone.
maureen is awesome! She can be a little coo-coo sometimes, and seems like she should be teaching kindergarten with her weird assignments, but she is very very helpful, and in the end, surprisingly I learned a lot. Very positive lady and very encouraging! I would take her class again.
She is a really nice professor

Marueen is such a sweet lady. She puts you on the spot but its actually worth it because you actually learn something. If you hate being put on da spot and participating then dont have her. But if you like the help and everything such as me. then go for it. shes very hepful
Amazing teacher! Very funny, can be overly sarcastic but it makes her classes even more interesting. She does jump around the course material but I found it rather helpful. Absolutely fabulous feedback on essays!! She actually _reads_ them. Great English prof and an easy marker! But if you don't like writing - don't take her course!
Very nice teacher! Not only does she try her best as a prof but she is also your friend! She loves Family Guy so that proves how cool she is! Very sympathetic to the needs of disabled students!Has a real flair for English! Prepares you well for University papers and essays! If you take English at Camosun take her! She is an awesome prof!
ok here is the deal, she is SUPER nice and more than willing to help anyone. Very smart, silly, and knows her stuff. The downfall is that she is flightly and bounces from topic to topic. If u space out in class for a few seconds u are going to find yourself saying WTF are we even doing?
I highly recommend people not to take this teacher'course.Every class, she is not otgnized, and she always send you email to tell you what she was going to teacher in the class.During the class, she talks about all the stuff are not related what she want to teach. She doesnot tell you how to write the essay she ecpectsbut she is a harder marker
She's a fabulous teacher! Classes were easy to follow, interesting and fun. Opened up a whole new world for me! Assignments made me think, but isn't that what college is all about? Definitely recommend this one.
This course was my best ever. Teacher was clear, fun. She was very organized, thankfully. A real fountain of knowledge. The course outline covered a lot of material and at first I was overwhelmed by it, but the way Dr. Niwa presented it was exciting and easy to follow. Her love for the material was contagious!!!
One of the Nicest teachers you will ever have. Although I would recommend going to get 1 on 1 help with her, as she seems to teach better 1 on 1 than in a group setting. If you put in some form of effort into this class you'll do just fine. Remember to ask if you need help!, shes one of the best teachers at Camosun when it comes to actually helping
Quite friendly and the course is pretty easy if you did okay in high school English. If you're aiming for more than a B- though it's quite hard, since her instructions are unclear and she assigns many overlapping assignments. A word of advice to anyone who takes her class: do poorly on your writing sample assignment.
Maureen is such a sweet woman. Very positive and passionate in class. She focuses on essays more than lecture so its a learn as you go process. She selects great essay topics to ensure you are writing about things passionate to you.
Maureen is an easy marker if you follow her outlines, add her 'dress ups' and use good transitions. If you attend class she couldn't make it any easier for you. Took her 'condensed' spring course. Bring a draft for your partner to give you feedback on then revise and hand in the next. Can't complain for one assignment per week due.
Maureen is a very picky marker. Although the midterm was easy (and no final exam), she nitpicks all the writing assignments, even if you follow the very strict outlines that she gives out. Class time is mostly wasted. The one plus is that she is very passionate about English.
Helpful and understanding when I was unable to hand in a small assignment on time due to a group project member slacking. Communicate with her if you are struggling. Great feedback, but if you take 151 with her, make sure you take 161 with her too, as Candace Fertile teaches the complete opposite of her, which was frustrating. Highly recommend!
FOR AN EASY A, GO WITH NIWA!!! Compared to all other profs, she is the easiest by far. Show up and look interested and you'll do great. She likes to overlap assignments though, so that was super annoying. But if you can, choose Niwa for sure!
Choose Niwa if you want a very relaxed prof who marked super easy. Her directions for assignments are confusing and she doesn't give much info on what she actually wants so that's annoying, but she doesn't mark hard so I didn't mind.
Maureen was a great teacher to have. If you're okay with overlapping assignments then you should do fine. Just show up to class and show her that you're putting in effort.
Maureen is an inspiring English teacher, gives clear feedback. Getting a solid mark is 100% possible if you follow the criteria and take risks, but It's not an automatic A if you don't work for it
Great professor and very inspirational! She is funny and gives great feedback.
Maureen was a great prof to have, especially for a first year course. She was super sweet and accommodating. She's pretty clear on what she expects for an assignment, and is a rather easy marker. I would definitely take her class again if I had the option.
She gives great feedback on assignments. Learn from it! Strives for your improvement after every piece. Easy to get a hold of for feedback. Clear marking criteria. Textbook is a course pack she put together priced $25. All readings, examples, course relevant info included. Course leads to writing a proper research paper. NO FINAL EXAM
Also took ENG 161 with her. She gives good feedback but if you don't write like she does (dress ups, etc) it's wrong. She can be quite unclear as to what she wants out of an assignment and her thoughts are scattered. Classes are mandatory; she is hard to get a hold of via email and has few office hours. Have a question? ASK IN CLASS. Nice woman.
Maureen gives conflicting instructions throughout her course. She does not have a rubric for grading. She seems to give you whatever grade she feels like in the moment and won't give you a reason. All major assignments are in the last few weeks of class.
I am so grateful to have taken Maureen's class during my first semester at Camosun. She is passionate about English, extremely engaging during lectures, and makes the content feel relevant to all of her students from so many different backgrounds. I'm sorry I didn't take more classes with her!
Loved her selection of readings; nice mix of poems and "book club" novels. We went to see an actual play--very fun! Instructor is fair in her marking, and gives lots of guidance, tips, samples and instruction to complete the assignments. She knows how to support you when you are struggling, and is extremely motivating. I love lit a lot more now!
Niwa is super passionate about English! She can be a bit scattered in her lectures but if you pay attention and ask question she gets the right info across to the students. If you have minimal writing skills going into the class I don't recommend it, but if you have some decent skills to begin with, she will be there to help you develop them.
Maureen really cares about her students and their learning. She is a fairly tough grader, but she is very accessible outside class and always offering additional help. You get to know a lot of the other students in this class compared to most uni classes which is really nice. There is quite a bit of homework and reading, but it is nicely spaced out
I was beyond excited to begin my semester with English. I have always exceeded in my English courses and I love a refresher. This prof is unorganized, unclear, will add things into your projects last minute, does not use D2L, and grades like youre in third year. If you can, avoid this prof at all costs.
Absolutely scattered in her material, is not clear on what she wants for assignments. If you do not write the way she does its wrong!! Excessive expectations for a first year English class. Definitely meant to teach a 3rd or 4th year English class, do not recommend if your looking for an A or higher.
Maureen's lectures are engaging and insightful. She cares deeply about the personal and professional development of her students. If you're willing to learn and take advantage of her breadth of knowledge, you will succeed. When I came to university, I realized how crucial the basic skills of structuring an essay and advancing a clear argument are.
Maureen is a fantastic teacher. She does expect hard work, but if you are struggling, she will do anything to help you get to your goal. She is passionate about English, and there is alot of reading, but it is all beautiful literature, and she will help you understand it in new and exciting ways. She awakened a writer in me that I had forgotten.
Well educated. Really helpful. Provide proper feedback on assignments. Cares about her students and helps you do good in class.
Maureen is understanding. The workload was pretty standard until the last three weeks when she assigned two large papers and a presentation right before the final. I would have much rather these projects over the course of the term. She leaves lots of comments (not so nicely either). If she doesn't agree with your points on papers... good luck.
Maureen is so very lovely and energetic. She loves participation and its not that bad! Please Please Please email her or go to her office hours for any questions or for her to look at your writing, shes always willing to help! There are a few assignments at the end that come fast but ask her questions and you will do absolutely fine in the class!
Ive never seen such an inspirational, caring and kind instructor in my whole life. She is very accessible. She always makes sure that students understand the content. Her grading criteria is very clear. If i would have opportunity to take all my courses from her, I definitely will.
Really good teacher, she is very lenient on due dates. If you have a problem, she will always answer your emails within an hour or 2 which is so helpful. Get ready for lots of assignments near the end of the semester, there are lots of big projects due around that time. Get ready to read lots of poems and short stories too...
Lovely women who is readily available to talk with and get feedback from. The bad starts with the workload. She gives a ridiculous amount of homework. For a class where the content is very easy, you wouldn't expect it to take more time then all your other 3 classes combined. This by far has been the class I hated taking most out of my four years.
I hate Maureen so much. Credit where credit is due, she is very available for questions and she does care, but wow I cannot stand her. She gives so much to do and all of it is unbearably dull and mundane. She also puts unrealistic expectation on people who are just taking the class because they need to. Not everyone's whole life is English class
Maureen is a caring and passionate prof. She's always very happy to help. She responds to emails fast and has flexible office hours. However, the workload is ridiculous and she's a tough marker. She expects A LOT and her grading scale represents a 3rd or 4th year, not first-year. P.S 4 assignments (60%) of your grade is due in the last 2 weeks!
I thnk a lot of ppl who are saying they don't like Maureen prbly struggle with English classes, and that's totally okay! Everyone has their strngths. But, if you like to read, are hardworking, have a bit of creativity, and are open to feedback, you can learn a lot from this class! Maureen is such a lovely woman! I would definitely recommend!
If English is your second language, please don't take class with her. Even knowing that English is your second language, she expects you to write and talk like English your first language. she will criticize you for your future. I beg you don't take class you will end up failing. She only care for people who are good at English.
I'm honestly surprised at the bad reviews, I loved professor Niwa and is by far my favourite professor yet! She made me love English again and has drastically improved my writing through her detailed feedback. It is workload heavy. However, the assignments are creative and fun! She truly loves English and wants to help everyone succeed (:
Maureen is a very sweet woman and is always available to talk to for help. Her content is hard to follow and she gives multiple assignments a week along with at least 2-4 readings per week. Very hard to keep up with all the work she assigns.
Maureen is probably the best English prof. I've ever taken a class with. She gives amazing feedback (which you're able to apply to future assignments) and is a very reasonable grader. She gave interesting readings and the assignments were very reasonable for a lit class. The workload feels overwhelming at first but is honestly quite manageable.
Endless reading, pointless assignments, and tries her hardest to force her own ideologies about minorities & immigrants in Canada into the assignments which should only be on english and not her own beliefs. This course has 0 benefits on your actual career. It's not structured to evaluate your english whatsoever. Avoid her at all costs.
Yes, she is a tough marker but she also puts as much effort into her students as she expects from them, which I cant say for the majority of instructors ive had. She is incredibly accomodating, kind, and happy to help with all the assignments she gives! but yeah get ready for a hefty workload and lots of class particpiation.
Maureen is a very helpful teacher and provides great feedback on all assignments. There is a decent amount of work in this course which could be hard for those who struggle with English, but it is completely manageable. Maureen is very dedicated to helping you be successful in this course and was a pleasure to have as a prof.
Nice enough individual, but SO MUCH HOMEWORK. More so than I've had for any other class, and I'm in my 4th year. I've always been a strong English Student, but her feedback made me never want to write again, or at least share my writing. If you aren't in an english program, you're valued less. Still not entirely sure what I learned ether.
her tests are impossible and she marks so hard. it's almost impossible to get a good grade
she's a horrible prof. she's so rude in her feedback. do not take a class with her.
