EASY class. She is a bit nuts though.
As long as you attend class, and do the labs, this class is a piece of cake. She is a really good teacher to have. You know about the singing, but she also made teacher of the year or something like that.
Very helpful. Sometimes she sings in the class. And we do some light stretching. Won teacher of the month last couple of semesters.
There is no instuctor better than this one!!
Nice lady, makes class fun.
I took Maureen for my geography lab. What a great young teacher. She just graduated herself and is clearly excited about teaching and life. She's an inspiration and a great teacher. Her lectures are interesting, she's got a booming voice for such a small lady. Most of the young guys in the class had a crush on her. Fun and informative class!
I took Walsh for the lechture. Hated him. Maureen is fantastic! Attend class, it counts for your grade. You sit through a 15 or less minute lecture to prepare for the lab that takes less than an hour. When you are done, you can go home. 3 exams that are all related to lecture & labs. She is so awesome&Helps out on everything that you need help with
not too bad of a class. You have to work in order to get your grade, but all of the work is in your labs that you have to do each class period. The tests are resonable, although some people thought they were hard. I got an A and did not work very hard for it.
I had trouble with this course but still received and "A" There are few points available in the class and the bulk of the points rely on the 3 tests. So if you bomb the first test the chances of receiving an "A" are slim. I did not find the class interesting and I will never use what I learned in real life. Good teacher though...
I loved her. Personable, reasonable, easy to talk to and very helpfull. Would take her again, hands down. I got a good grade, but I worked for it.
everyone below me is right, you have to work for your grade. she knows exactly what she's talking about and the lectures are straightforward, my only problem was remembering everything for the exams. and the semester project is a bit hard. great teacher overall, just hated her tardy rule. and she looks like sarah silverman.
Show up and do the labs you will definitely get an A in her class. Reading the lab manual and taking good notes helps in the exams. There's about 15 pts available extra credit so it's impossible to fail her class. Take her and she makes geography fun!
i found it hard to sit through her lab class because the lectures were so boring and she explains everything as if she were teaching 2nd graders. very easy class though. just show up and do the labs.
Easy class. Take notes and turn in work and you will get an A. She explains everything as if the students are in pre-school. If you can avoid falling asleep in class you will learn something.
Great teacher. She is extremely nice and teaches very clearly; makes geography fun. Lectures for about 20 mins and then you work on the Lab. Just look over the Labs before each test and you'll be good. Highly Recommended!
She is GREAT! I hated the lecture class - got C, took lab over the summer - got an A! She was always there to help and explained everything - there were no surprises! All you need to do is stay and do the labs in class, and if you understand them you will get an A. Don't be late - a few Pop Quizzes on lab reading at start of class. SHE'S GREAT!
At first this class seemed so hard but just get with a good lab group and do the work in the workbook and study hard for the tests and it is worth it. Learning the material was really hard but reviewing it got easier if you tried. You really need to practice. But highly recommended
I took her for lab and she is wonderful. She clarified the material many times over where the lecture left me confused. The labs were fun and interesting, and she wrote a good majority of the material in the lab book, which is specialized for the class. Grades are labs and tests. I probably would have failed lecture without her.
The lab class is an easy A/B because it requires such minimal time commitment. There is no homework, and if you study for the test a few hours early you will ace it because the tests are identical to the labs. She is so thorough, I had Vu for lecture I would have definitely rather taken Smith.
Such an easy class. Mid-term and Final only. a semester project that could be done in 2 weeks & you can turn in your proj 5 times before the due date, she corrects it and hands it back to you to fix (seriously). Atlas assignment but you could ask her if you have QS and she will give you the answers (no joke). CAN us cheat sheet on midterm and final
Is a very easy class. Took her summer time and all we had was three test one of which is the final, and map quizes. That being said her lectures are very long and very boring. She is the example of a teaching putting you asleep.
Smith was a great teacher. She really gets you into the material and makes it fun. I would recommend her to anyone.
Excellent, very fun,
Good teacher but the finally and midterm was really hard.. The project was easy and quizzes are a complete joke (they were easy)
I hated the material (geography is just not my bag) but she was a great teacher, easy, VERY clear and helpful. The midterm and final can get a little difficult, but there's so much other stuff in the gradebook to weigh those scores out even if you do badly, including some extra credit.
On-line class, material was easy and interesting, reading is a must to get an A, three exams, they could be somewhat confusing, quizes every week, homework assingments and discussion threads, no paper projects, she offered 15 points extra credit. Highly recommend her and this class. Not a Geography fan, but I know I will get an A for sure.
Took cultural geography online. She is very clear about what she expects and the tests and homework assignments were particularly interesting. Workload of homework is minimal, quizzes and tests are what will make your money.
Professor Smith is great! If you go to class and do well on the 10 question quizzes you will get an A. She gives you a study guide for each exam which really helps! Easy extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. TAKE HER!
Took the online class. Very easy, but a bit of busy work. Teacher is very clear of the expectations of the work and will answer questions really quickly. Good teacher.
Took her online geography 2 class and loved it. I thought the book was really interesting. The class itself is super easy. 10 quizzes that you can take up to 4x each, 3 exams, a few discussion boards and HW assignments that are very simple. The questions go in order of the reading. You just have to look. Easy A but you actually learn stuff too.
Professor Smith is one of the BEST teachers on campus. Super nice and kinda funny. easygoing and approachable. the material is interesting and her grading is VERY lenient. In her hybrid class, all 10pt quizzes are online, half of the midterm online and hw was quick and easy. With a bit of effort you should get at least a B.
Nothing but good things to say about her. Very clear on due dates and what's expected on assignments. No assignments were unreasonably hard. I got a C on the midterm, missed an assignment, got an A on my semester project (it's a fun photo essay) and I'm pretty sure an A on my final. Overall grade of an A. Allowed a cheat sheet on midterm and final.
Took the Online class for Geography 2 (Cultural Geography) I was mildly interested in the subject matter but she bounces around and she makes things MUCH HARDER then they need to be. The website she uses, that students have to buy a book form is in unreliable and you have to download the book over and over. She is strict about grammar and spelling.
Take this professor! She is excellent and I got an easy A in her class. She describes everything crystal clear and her tests are easy if you attend every class. Her lectures are interesting and not that boring.
Maureen Smith is a great professor! She makes the class decently interesting. Online quizzes which you can take multiple times and are super easy! Uses online quizzes on the tests almost all the time. Study guide for everything. Easy A+ for me! Just read and do the homework and the extra credit! EASY EASY TEACHER, MUST TAKE!
Take her class! I took her honors cultural geography class and it was very easy. All quizzes are online including part 1 of the midterm. Easy A!!
Maureen is awesome, she is very clear in what she wants you to do for her class and all of her quizzes are easy points. She makes the class as easy as possible and is always willing to help out when she can! Take her if you can:)
Super sweet lady, very kind and thorough with explaining everything. Lectures are long but help you prepare for the quizzes/exams. Subject matter is really easy if you already know computers. She is very entertaining and kind/reasonable. Do all the labs and show up to class and you will get a good grade!
Super interesting class! Prof. Smith is very straightforward and teaches the information very well.
Take the abbreviated course w/ online components. Very straightforward class. The quizzes online so you can use the book, she drops the lowest score, final project is easy, the study guides for tests arent the best but she allows cheat sheets. Lectures are simple, if it's not easy you aren't paying any attention. She's nice, always willing to help.
Took a field studies class with her and she was awesome. Her lectures are very interesting and she knows what she's talking about. Do the work and you will get an A.
Easy class. Attend, take some notes, read, do the online quizzes and writing assignments, and you should get an A. The professor is very sweet and straight forward about her expectations.
This class definitely requires hard work but Professor Smith is really concise and clear with her directions for every assignment. The homework takes time but it is based off of articles that are relevant and interesting. The tests and quizzes are straight forward and you are given 4 attempts to take each quiz for your best score. Great class!
I took Geography online. From everything I read here, I figured this teacher would be very informative and help make this subject interesting. I was wrong. I haven't actually learned anything about Geography. If you don't know what Chicago Style Formatting is, do not take this class.
Brief feedback: Tough grader. I got a B and I normally get A's. Very strict on 2 things- Chicago Manual of Style and doing all discussion board posts on diff days. Responds fast to student questions. Midterm and Final are very hard and timed, but are multiple choice. hw and quizzes every week, not hard, but must refer to grading rubric and CHICAGO!
This teacher has absolutely destroyed my passion as a student who was eager to learn about Geography. She expects us to utilize this Chicago Manual of Style and when we don't, she doesn't explain how we cited our sources wrong. Overall, the course uses very many dissapointing facing strategies in terms of directly learning about Geography.
We are graded on the amount of plagiarism (if there is ANY, it's an automatic 0 which I might added is impossible unless you make up your own language), and citing in Chicago style. We should be graded on our knowledge of GEOGRAPHY and that alone, not how we cite the answers in our homework. She should become an English professor instead.
The class difficulty doesn't come from the work. Unfortunately Maureen's teaching style and authoritarian rule make this class miserable. She has about 5 different places you have to seek to obey her militant rule for each assignment. She requires a lot of your time because she must not have an interesting life herself. Wouldn't recommend.
The people below clearly didn't pay attention to her directions or bother to ask questions. The citing she wants, Chicago Style, is incredibly easy. Put some effort into the homework, and term project, easy A.
This is not an easy class, but you learn a lot! The tests are difficult and I suggest making an outline while reading to help you on the exams. Use Chicago Style and follow her instructions. Make sure to go into the Homework Instructions and follow them.
She is so clear with her instructions that if you don't do well, it's your own fault. The midterm and final are both challenging, but she lets you use a cheatsheet. You have to go to class or get the notes because she talks about things on the test that aren't on the powerpoints. Sometimes her lectures got boring, but I learned a lot.
Geog is a lot more detailed than expected. I thought I was getting a C grade due to not scoring so well on the exams but she gives you several assignments and some extra credit to allow you to bring your grade up. Pay attention, follow directions, try not to miss more than 3-4 classes, and submit all your assignments! Every point counts.
She is hard, but the class is due able. I thought I wasn't going to pass until the night before everything was due. If you are looking for an easy A, this class is not for you. If you have questions about anything email her and she will get back to you and never hurts to ask.
This class is not an easy A, quizzes and tests are based on the reading which is heavy. Power points provided do not help. Very particular grader but tell you how to cite in the Chicago style. This class is all about weather and environmental impact, not what I expected, I would not take it again since I am not a science major.
Just make sure you know Chicago style formatting otherwise you will get low points. She expects you to know everything on the syllabus and where each nitpicky grading information is. She makes things due on Wednesdays, which defeats the purpose of an online class, and makes you reply to two other students on separate days.
If you want to get an B or above take the online class . No notes to write. Helps do know MLA citation which is standard for all college work so if you are taking this as freshman be prepared. She will grade you down for not citing properly which prepares you for a 4 year school. I was told this was the easiest of the science classes it was hard .
She should be an English teacher, I learned more about Chicago style citing than actual geography content. After completing homework, you have no clue which answers you did wrong. Makes it difficult for finals. Mid terms/finals, hours worth of studying & filling out the study guide, which minimally helps. Extra credit is practically inaccesable
If you are looking for an easy online class, DO NOT take her class. She is insane when it comes to citing and docks you down huge points no matter what. Makes it impossible to find any of the material in the book and notes if you are using as a reference for quizes/tests. Would not recommend ever, wish I didn't need to take the class to transfer.
what you put in this class is what you will get out. Super straight forward. I took it online, but I still met up with Smith in person to discuss any questions. I'm not a science person but this class was not too challenging. If you try and don't miss any due dates you will finish with a good grade. Chicago writing style is easy!!
I'm not sure about the low ratings below me. I understand she uses Chicago style, but it's so straightforward and clear within the syllabus that it makes it almost as easy as slicing butter. She gives amazing feedback and she really wants her students to succeed. I recommend her 8 week course as it was short, concise, and not difficult!
She requires Chicago style, but it isnt hard to do so its not an issue. Shes very organized, and has all the homework accessible from the start. Hw is based on articles, where you would either have to write an essay answering all the questions, or have to make notes on a flash card and discuss with the class. Take notes and do hw and youll pass
Good professor and is passionate about what she teaches and gives great feedback
I took 2 geography classes with her, cultural and physical. I enjoyed both so much. My favorite classes so far. She is strict with citations and bibliographies, but she gives you the format to start with. If you keep it with you its easy, and I used it when writing in my other classes. I learned alot, and have a better understanding of the world.
I enjoyed this class a lot! You can tell she enjoys teaching Geography and the content is very straightforward. Each class consists of a lecture and lab assignment. As long as you pay attention and do the work, then you will pass the tests easily.
Why Maureen has bad ratings, who knows. She is a wonderful geography professor and has fascinating lectures. She incorporates her personal experiences into the lecture material so that students can relate. The course is mainly just a lot of reading, a few critical response type essays, and the exams are just testing thematical critical thinking.
Highly recommend! Like any class, you'll need to study but she allows multiple attempts in the weekly quizzes and offers a generous amount of extra credit assignments. Discussion posts require sources cited but she gives you the citing format which is very useful. She is also very responsive and helpful- seems to genuinely care about her students!
I did this class in an 8 week, online only format. It was hard, but do-able. You need to do the work to get the grade, but Prof Smith was super helpful right through the class, which helped a ton. Prof Smith gave great feedback, and gave you a chance to "get it right" (even extra credit) Prof Smith wants you to pass. Can't ask for anything better.
Professor Smith gives thorough lectures and is approachable. She responds promptly to emails and is engaging with students. The subject matter was not unreasonably difficult. The book is mandatory and you will be reading a ton. Assignments and discussions were very engaging.
This professor's Geography class is not an easy A or B by any means. The amount of reading she assigns is absurd and her exams are very difficult. Her study guide for exams didn't help at all. Expect about 2 quizzes, 2 LONG chapters of reading, and either a complex discussion post or homework assignment PER WEEK. I do not recommend this professor.
A big no! Maureen doesn't respond to the emails. She randomly changes your grades after a month for no reason. The class material isn't hard, and tests are easy, exams easy, all answers are online, so you'll be fine. But I do not recommend this professor.
You can tell she does not care. There are no lectures, I get that it's an online class but she didn't even try. No video lectures, no notes, only the most incomprehensible PowerPoints. Quizzes are pretty much made up of random trivia from the textbook that is vaguely related to the topic. She also clearly does not understand what a discussion is.
Do not recommend this professor! Doesnt respond to emails, Im not complaining about difficulty, but Maureen is extremely unprofessional and rude. I got an A, but you really have to work for it.
Don't believe the negative comments left regarding Professor Smith. The syllabus clearly describes what is required. You get 4 chances to take each quiz, and the discussions are not complicated if you read the article. Up to 20 points in extra credit available. Quick response to emails I sent. Just do the work, don't cheat, and you will be fine.
I just completed GEOG1 with Maureen Smith, and really recommend her to anyone looking to take a Geography course. A lot of reading can be expected, but excellent communication with her throughout the course. If you need clarification on an assignment or don't understand your grade, ask nicely and with tact and you will receive honest feedback.
She was very clear with grading criteria, follow her directions for posts and you'll get full marks. No lectures, read chapters, 2 exams 75 points each multi choice. Quizzes you can take 4 times. You need the Atlas for assignments, she gives the questions prior so you can look up the answers. Discussion posts are reading/comprehension. Easy A
Quizzes and readings straightforward, but the volume of reading was crazy. Focuses on citing and being professional and academic in discussion posts (citations). Half of the announcements and the syllabus was about not cheating.
the professor is so nice and she support and give extra credit to the student, and she is nice and I recommend it her.
Felt like a staple pre-COVID online course. Lots of reading (textbook provided free), lots of writing (discussions/short responses), minimal teacher interaction (unless sought). Some test questions were specific to the readings/weren't covered on the homework, so reading/note taking is a must. I don't like online courses, but I did fine.
I enjoyed this professor. She gives a lot of work but also provides extra credit. I bombed my first midterm test, then really studied for my final and was able to get a good grade overall. This is a class you will take away knowledge from.
Course GEOG38: Very particular with homework. Confusing discussions with ridiculous length requirements. Overly specific quiz questions. 0 teacher interaction unless sought, student is self-teaching. Less content than other geog courses, but an in-person class with an actually active professor is far more enriching and doesnt feel like wasted time
Defiantly not an easy A class. Homework is pretty much like essays.
This was a simple and non-stressful online class. Though I didn't meet the professor in person, their teaching was clear, and the course was well-structured. Overall, a positive experience. if you do replies on discussion posts on the same day you will be marked off for some reason. extra credit saved me.
Truly outstanding! Her enthusiasm & love of teaching are obvious, she's approachable, clear, and often went out of her way to be helpful.I learned far more than anticipated & she inspired me to want to continue studying geo & envi science. The textbookGeo Core was excellent, w/QR code access to great video field trips.Avoid pennybooks:missing pages.
Her instructions are so confusing and she makes everything so much more complicated than it needs to be. She acts like your entire life is her class. So much homework, so much reading on top of the lectures and they don't really correlate. Make sure to read all the instructions thoroughly. It feels like she does not want people to succeed.
Attendance is very mandatory, and it will impact your grade. If you show up and put the work in you will get a good grade. She is also very accessible during office hours to get extra help. The exams are pretty straight forward.
If you want to die, please take Geo38 to write eight paragraphs(which is not including the whole exam) in the midterm.
She was very nice and provided tons of opportunities for extra credit. Just be sure to do the reading and you'll succeed.
Professor Smith is an amazing professor and a genuinely good human being. She is an expert in her field and communicates her expertise clearly and concisely. She genuinely cares about her students. Do not hesitate to register for one of her classes; you will not regret it.
