He is organized and very knowledgeable. You may feel a little confused and don't know what's going on during lectures, but once you get started on the paper it gets much better coz Mauricio tries his best to help you write your paper. VERY NICE PROF! class avg is high comparing to other classes!
Hard to follow what he wants and class average is very low
Course is hard, don't get me wrong. You will be confused in the beginning. But prof goes out of his way to teach and do his best to help you on your paper. Just be attentive and show interest in your topic and he will notice that. Very nice and dedicated prof. Definitely one of the better UBC econ prof.
This class can definately be a good opportunity to boost your gpa. Heck, I got a 91% in the end and I am not a mathematically/statiscally adept student either. Just pick good topics, be consistent and keep in touch with the prof. The way he teaches is logical and well-defined--so no suprises. The avg. for his class is the highest for all 490s too.
Mauricio is the man. Lectures are very interesting and he's always organized. You can get by with his extremely clear and extensive class notes available online. Easy class too as long as you put in some effort.
This guy's class was so interesting. He's very fair with his midterm and final and if you study his notes and the tutorial readings, there will be no surprises. Highly recommended!
Mauricio is DEFINITELY the man. His lectures are always interesting and he has a great sense of humour. He keeps things current by discussing modern-day circumstances (like financial crises, bubbles, & private politics). If you do at least some of the readings (there are a LOT) and know the slides, you should be able to do well. Highly recommended.
Grate prof. Very clear and interesting lectures and discusses more recent matters. Very approachable and helpful. There is a lot of material to read but can do well if you don't read all. One of my favorite econ teachers.
Engaging subject matter, super knowledgeable and crystal clear in his delivery. Notes are posted up after lectures and averages are high. Word to the wise, though: the 50% final is brutal - I walked in to it thinking it would be a joke seeing as I had a 90 and ended up with a 78%. Best econ prof I've had at UBC thus far.
If you are prepared to do most of the readings then the class is great. He posts lecture notes online and outlines exactly what he expects on all projects, assignments and exams. When answering exam questions you need to know the readings and be able to quote them. It also helps if you express an opinion in addition to regurgitating facts.
Strong accent.Hard Midterm but optional.Tons of reading! But he is the most engaging econ prof i've ever had.You actually LEARN things from this course.Grades turns out to be higher than ppl expected
The accent never changes the fact that he is a very clear, literate and organized lecturer. Knows the course material inside out, but he demands the same discipline from his students, evident in the heavy reading list. Be diligent, show that you are earnest about learning and things will turn out fine.
easy class.. midterm was optional ( like insurance) and final marks were scaled up like 5%. also if he likes u and knows ur name, he will give u up to 5% for ur OVERALL MARK.readings were very bitter and long though..
Great professor. He taught us so much. Sure there was a lot to read, but it was all interesting. Moreover the lectures were fun to go to. This class is very easy to get a good grade in if you just study the lectures and the book readings.
This course is not as easy as I thought. Massive readings to read in order to get a good mark on exams. Lab presentations are easy, midterm is okay, but final's marking unfair. Made a bad choice of taking this course.
At many points throughout the courses I wanted to scream "ENOUGH READINGS!!" There is just so much to read, we have to know the authors, the articles inside out, How can we possibly find that much time to read a 50-page article + 20-page chapter reading every week. Tutorials are easy I suppose.
he's awesome! he's got a cool (but hard to understand) accent, but I have to agree with everyone else; readings are blargh.
One of the coolest profs ever~ He teaches u about life n d world, but not juz irrelevant to life econ theory) And he even gives off bonus marks for effortful participating in classes! How cool is that~ However, it is true that there r lots& lots of reading~ which makes it really challenging; especially 4 ESL kids~ nut take~ Good eduction is not ez!
loved him! but honestly if u want to pay attention sit in the front of the class because he has a strong accent! and it takes some time to getting used to
He is a very good professor. He cares about his students and works hard at trying to get them to understand economic concepts. I enjoyed his class (though I wouldn't mind less readings)and I felt very engaged in what I was learning. Overall, he gave me a better understanding of globalization :)
One of the best teachers I've had; very comprehensive understanding of economics, and obviously takes much care in selecting the assigned readings. Really makes you think about things, and not just memorize ideas. There is a lot of reading, but if you actually WANT to learn about globalization then you will breeze through it with ease.
One of the best professors I've had; his lectures are clear, interesting, and thoughtful. True, there are many readings, but he gives incentives to do them with his grade breakdown. As professor he is articulate, approachable, and fair. If you do the readings you will succeed in the course, on top of learning important material. Recommended!
This course is like getting anally probed twice a week.
Great Proff! A tough marker, but if you do all the readings and go to all the lectures you'll do well.
He's smart AND hot! What else would you want from a prof??
A nice man who is very knowledgeable. A lot of readings but they're quite interesting. The final assignment is quite stellar. You get to write a journal from any historical character (& annotate the economic theories at play) I did one as a pirate in the 17th century. Was the most fun I've had doing an assignment!
A really interesting prof. Knows the subject well, and also brings something more into economics. He chose great books for my class. Lectures can be a bit long, but not dead boring.
Went to his office hours, never skipped, rarely paid attention in class. Easy A for both midterms. Final i stumbled a bit, but his exams are so fair. Just remember to do the readings, or at least like " take important" parts from readings.
Probably the best class I have ever taken. Some people complain about his accent, but as long as you are actively listening, it won't be a problem. He is incredibly clear about what he is teaching and what he expects of you. Truly inspiring prof who makes it fun! Highest mark I've ever received too (95 with not too much effort)
Great professor, though you have lots of things to read. The lecture was a little boring since he just read everything from the slides. But he is still a very knowledgeable professor and the grading criteria is clear too.
Has one eyebrow but is hilarious as engaging yet teaches relevant information very effectively
For Mauricio's first time teaching 101, he put in a lot of work. Almost everything we learned was relevant and he used real world examples that were current and interesting. His accent is no big deal and he asked us for feedback constantly. The heavy reliance on clicker questions and online work made it easy if you did the reading
Very nice man. Well versed in his teachings as well.
As long as you go to class and do all his assignments, it will be hard to fail. His lectures are clear and he uses conversational language so often it would clear up the textbook readings even more. Read the textbook before classes to get the clicker questions, which are easy marks.
He's a great professor who knows his subject inside out. He is able to answer every question thrown at him in a way that 19 year old students can understand perfectly. He uses examples that students can relate to while still sticking to the theory and covering all the economic principles. Read the textbook to nail the clicker questions.
Amazing prof. His lectures are extremely useful and can be entertaining. Tests are fair: remember to do and understand all the problem sets! He's always willing to help. Always bring your iclicker! Also, bonus points if you talk to him about his photography he's got some good stuff.
Show up on time, bring clickers, and do readings. Great lecturer, funny, cares about you, etc. Mauricio is literally the full package.
Mauricio is a real gem to say the least. His lectures are on point and his examples exemplify many economic theories taught(That is despite 101 being very theoretical). He also always seems to have a joke up his sleeve so make the most of that ahha
Best Prof.
Lectures were dry and tutorials were weird because it required you to have insane knowledge of global affairs, politics, and finance before every tutorial, but as long as you spoke you got a really good grade and tutorials were worth 30%. however the grading of the essays in his midterm and final were ridiculously critical.
I took an economic history with this prof and it was one of the best course I took ! He is funny, responds to emails quickly, super knowledgable, his assignments are not hard if you do the reading. Would recommand !!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS COURSE THANKS TO MAURI(first time teaching this)! I absolutely loved his lectures. Even though they were each 1.5hrs long it never felt like it; he always inserts little jokes or funny remarks to make the lectures interesting, and he makes hard papers easy to understand. clear criteria, and made me love econ history.
Amazing lecturer no actually enjoyed sitting in his lectures. Attendance is worth 20% of your grade (iclicker questions) so make sure you go. The final assignment is really cool! Actually had fun writing it. That being said, this class is a lot of hard work, but you leave actually feeling like you've learned something.
I was worried about Econ334 bc the only Econ course I have taken before was in high school, but I was interested in the content. I ended up getting the best grade I have ever gotten at UBC. You definitely have to show up to class and do the readings, but I found them enjoyable. He's a fantastic lecturer who really loves the content. great prof!
Dr. Drelichman is an incredible prof. I absolutely loved this course and did really well in it. The lectures are extremely engaging and the anecdotes made the content easy to remember. He is clearly very passionate about economic history and it shows through his teaching!
Worst professor ever! He maybe good during in person lecture but not for online! Tons of reading sucks!
Even though professor Drelichman is good, the Online class is a joke. If you have to take this class online, do not. There is super limited contact with the professor, and it feels like a course I could pay 10 dollars to take on EDX or Coursera. Not worth it.
The people leaving the most two recent negative reviews talking trash about his online course are actually the biggest donkeys alive . The pre recorded lectures are so easy to follow and extremely informative, I'm definitely learning a lot... Professor is an absolute beauty. Take this as a lesson to always take negative reviews with a grain of salt
This prof is a real gem, his course is very interesting and he delivers the material in a direct way which leaves little question. When reaching out on email he is always helpful and has done a lot to make the online transition easier. His exams are not easy but marked fairly and if you work hard like any normal class you can do quite well.
An excellent professor! You learn a whole lot in his well structured classes. The content may seem intimidating and formidable at the start, but you get the hang of it soon enough and from there its an amazing ride. He puts in an incredible amount of effort to curate lecture readings, organise the class and respond to student concerns.
Seeing poor reviews of Professor Drelichman infuriated me. Those people should spend their parents money somewhere else and leave university to the big kids. I adore this class. As far as online teaching goes it may be the gold standard. Lots of readings and quizzes but I have learned a lot so far and so will you if you decide to take it :)
A truly great professor. Very easy to communicate with and I learned a lot in this course. Course is structured very well. I would definitely take more classes with him. He's funny and quirky in all the best ways, and extremely knowledgable and experienced. Thank you Professor!
This class was perfect for me. I'm a finance major who loves econ but would rather not read 1000 pages of dead men telling us how the world works (this is probably a bad take, but I just cant). The readings are actually really engaging and accessible, the grading is really straight forward, and Mauricio is a really great prof who cares & adapts
Prof. Mauricio was very supportive towards us in class and shared valuable knowledge. Although ECON 101 was hard as a subject, the professor always went the extra mile to make sure the course was run smoothly. Everything about the course was super organized and well coordinated.
Nice teaching and easy course material, if you are not stupid you will get a good grade.
Very amazing lecturer, he provides useful examples in his lectures to ensure students understand concepts.
Engaging lectures with funny real-life examples. Good dude with a great style of teaching, take him if you can!
As long as you keep up with readings before class, you will do very well in this course. Prof Drelichman has engaging lectures, assigns super interesting articles/papers to read, and is extremely helpful during office hours. He truly cares about his students' learning. Would definitely recommend!
Very inspirational, my favourite prof so far being at ubc, i had a hard time adjusting to uni but he was very kind and supporting. If you think you are ready for the exams, ur not, and don't waste any time during the tests or you will end up leaving stuff blank because you don't have a choice :o
Absolute gem. Fav prof from semester 1. Really fun guy, uses clear examples when explaining, always in a good mood. His Powerpoints are super well done and clear too, and he answers emails quickly. The exams are hard and worth 50% total, but work hard and you'll be fine. Only downside, the TAs are quite awful (explaining+availability).
Mauricio is excellent. Approachable and friendly guy, however, slipped out a few political comments which weren't necessary. An excellent choice for Microeconomics nonetheless.
Really great prof. Very informative and creates a positive atmosphere in class, with a good sense of humour! Very happy to have taken this class!
This was by far my favourite course in my first semester of university. Professor Mauricio is the type of professor that will go the extra mile - answers emails REALLY quickly, is extremely patient if you ask him questions during his office hours and has a great sense of humour during lectures.
Mauricio Drelichman, is an amazing profesor. He gives amazing lectures, is accesible outside of class and gives you all the support you need. ECON334 was really interesting, I can say that I learned alot, but it was reading heavy and you need to keep up with the readings to do well. Lectures go smoothly and are fun! Midterms are tricky :)
He is very clear on grading and what will be on the exam. As long as you fully understand what he talks about in lectures you'll be fine. You can get really high marks if you do the readings but if you're fine with a B, readings are not mandatory. His lectures are interesting as well.
Dr Drelichman was my favourite professor this term. His lectures were engaging and incredibly interesting, and it was clear that he was extremely knowledgeable in the course material. His office hours were valuable -- go to them! He is so kind, and a great prof. Put in the work, do the assignments, go to class, and you will do well.
Drelichman is the best prof!! His lectures are modelled after the weekly readings. There are 2 mid-terms, 1 writing assignment and 1 final exam. His marking scheme for exams is straightforward and 100% based on the readings/lectures. For the assignment, if you follow the rubric and make it unique (but factually correct), you will get a high mark.
Dr. Drelichman sets the perfect example on how to structure a course responsibly, aligning it with the final exam. His lectures are wonderful, and I truly appreciate that the content of the exams were true to his problem sets questions. He also responds to emails swiftly. There were no surprises on the exams, and I really respect him for that.
He explains things in a clear way and is always willing to help students.
Best class I've taken at UBC. Highly recommend them, his exams contain no surprises but there is a lot of reading required so be prepared. I honestly felt great doing it and would definitely take another course with Drelichman!
Drelichman is certainly my favourite econ prof at UBC. He knows how to lecture, makes lectures very interesting by adding bits of stories and humour, does not go off topic. We had to read a LOT of cool and interesting papers. I highly recommend taking Economic History of Modern Europe with him. Very helpful during office hours and cares for you.
The best teacher I've ever had. Made learning economics very fun and was a great first prof for Econ coming into my first Econ course at UBC. Mauricio is a stand-up class act and teaches with the perfect blend of humour, participation, and professionalism. I wish more professors could be like him, but his scarcity creates value!
Mauricio is a fantastic lecturer and an outstanding professor overall. He genuinely cares about students and is always available to help when needed. The readings, while heavy at times, are vital to success in the course. His passion for economic history is motivating and I'd highly recommend taking any course he offers at UBC!
Drelichman was a fantastic prof! His lectures were clear and informative. His exams were difficult but fair and he gave very useful practice material for each exam.
Professor Drelichman's class is absolutely fascinating but more importantly, is done with energy, humour, style, and an obvious knack for teaching. Content is clear and examined fairly and at times creatively. High grades are certainly accessible, but require hard work. Do the readings and make good notes! If you can take this class, do.
Dr. Drelichman is an absolutely stellar prof! His class is fascinating, the lectures and readings are entertaining and show interesting findings. I always look forward to this class, and the grading is very clear. Dr. Drelichman is always helpful and accessible outside of class, and cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Take this class!
If you have an opportunity to be in his lectures don't miss out! He is the best profs I've ever had at UBC. He is knowledgable, deeply passionate about his field, and puts a lot of effort into his lectures and the readings he assigns to his students. He is reliable and caring and full on changed the way I feel about economics. Awesome prof.
Amazing, very glad I took this course.
His lectures are extremely clear, fun and he may go a little fast but his lectures are always recorded so you can rewatch them anytime. Test heavy with a total of 4, but the three midterms set you up for success in his final. His test are extremely fair and is only based off the content you learned + practice material you get throughout the class.
Professor Drelichman is a great professor and an awesome human being. He genuinely cares about his students and if you are struggling in his class reach out to him he will be happy to chat always. Exams are exactly like problem sets and expectations are well defined. If you can take a class with him do it.
As a professor he's good, he has that kind of aura which makes you automatically respect him. But my god trying to get marks here is like looking for water in the Sahara
super interesting class and has awesome lectures that are also recorded which is a huge pro. the grading is pretty specific but not hard to do well if you do all the readings and go to class
very easy professor
He cares about his students and provides clear explanations. Tests are just like the practice material he provides. He gives a lot of resources to study before every exam. Would def take his courses again.
First time writing a view, this professor made me realize how fun it is to learn and I actually really enjoyed being a university student because of this class. Best professor I've taken in my three years here and highly highly recommend taking this course
Great professor, passionate about his work. Very supportive in class, and during office hours. Highly recommend.
Honestly, going into this class I was very scared since 100% of your grade is on exams. 2 MT and 1 Final. However, he is an amazing professor, makes lectures and topics interesting. Attendance is not mandatory he posts all lecture slides and recordings. Exams were very fair, it's definitely not a hard class, just have to put in effort.
econ 101 is easy af pretty good prof, you dont really need to attend anything at all cause theres so many resources online
the goat engaging and informative lectures. lots of helpful practice material. very straightforward class would recommend mauricio classes
