Avoid like the plague
I second avoid like the plague
Unclear in speech and downright hostile to people who ask questions. Every day I went to class I died a little more on the inside.
Is very harsh, believes that partial credit should hurt. It's his way or the wrong way.
Horrible teacher. Very unclear in examples. Does not help when students ask questions. Stay far away from this man.
If you listen to the man, he knows what hes talkin about
People **** way too much about this guy. He's easily one of the best math teachers i've ever had. He knows what he'd doing and is willing to answer questions. His class is difficult, but when you're done, you'll know the subject better than most.
Just Plain Horrible. Extremely defensive about Questions. He actually made 4 girls cry in class. Over half the class revolted and went to the department head about him, which only resulted in slight, if any, improvement. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!
the best math teacher ive ever had. he knows his stuff and if youre willing to listen and work outside of class, youll have an A. btw, he grades on a curve, 85+ is an A, 70+ is a B, and so on.
How well you do in his class is directly proportional to the amount of work you're willing to do. I personally LOVE this teacher. He's NOT unwilling to help, unlike everyone has said here. Maybe he's just gotten better over the last year, but I am looking forward to taking calc II with him.
He is a hard teacher, but A extremely good one. He pushes u to do better. Just do the work and u will be fine. He knows his stuff. The only questions I c him poke fun at, dumb questions that dont make sense. It really depends on what you ask.
Knew the material through and through, but often had trouble conveying this knowledge to the students ... he had a tendency to face the board while he was speaking, and he didn't speak very loudly, so he was rather tough to understand ... I did like that he gave weekly quizzes to keep you up to spee
Stay AWAY
Despite many students' negative attitudes toward this man, I must say that I learned a lot in his class. He was very helpful when I went to his office with questions. He challenges his students and I believe that may be why some don't appreciate him, but being challenged is the best way to learn higher level mathematics.
Homework is always collected; quizzes every week in class (1) and online (1); tests are challenging.
Sadist who hates students. I got straight A's in my entire college career, except for Bautista's calc class. 100 pages of material, 5 questions on test. Miss two, you fail. So sorry. Difficult to understand if not from southest asia. Good luck.
This professor does not teach the material very well at all. There are students in my class who have already taken Calc B and need to retake the class, and they find it difficult. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
This is perhaps one of the worst teachers that I have ever had. You can hardly understand a word he says. He moves way too fast through material and is never clear about homework assignments. He gives online and book work with some problems in both, and got mad when asked about it. He puts students down for being wrong. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Plays unfavorites (as in he chooses someone he hates a lot) Demeans people who ask questions. Seems to enjoy ripping a student apart for mistakes or doing things differently than him. Tests are unfair (students get A's on all the quizes leading up to the test, do well on the homework, and understand the material, but fail the test. doesn't add up)
He really doesn't deserve such bad ratings. His tests are no joke and he's a pretty boring lecturer but he's very friendly and approachable, and if you ask for clarification he's good at explaining. I expected the worst but he turned out to be a decent professor. If you are willing to put forth some effort you'll do fine.
Good at explaining things, but a strict teacher and hard grader. Get ready for a lot of work if you take him. Still, he's very entertaining and makes sure students understand the material. He's also very helpful outside of the classroom.
Extremely difficult class. Homework does not match lectures and does not cover what is on the tests. Tests are extrememly difficult 5 question tests. Partial credit on a 20 point problem in usually 20 points or 2 points. Not clear at what must be known for exam and demeans those who asks questions.
Great professor. Assigns homework for submission, but goes over homework questions in class before he collects them so you can finish the assignment in class. Tests were challenging as they should be in major league math. Very helpful. Teaches clearly. Organized. He has fun teaching. Projects are difficult as expected, but not graded harshly.
He's a very nice guy... and his class is mad laid back, he spends the first hour of every class going over homework making sure everyone understands what's going down... and his grading system is 85 or higher is an A, 70-84 B, 60-70 C 60-50 D, so it's pretty easy to get at least an A!...
He is not a very good teacher. I learn well from a lot of examples which he does not do a lot of. Some homework material was nothing like what we did in the class before the material was assigned. Focuses a ton on theory but can get very confusing/confused with himself when he lectures. Treats me like a child and gets mad when I ask him questions.
Not a very good professor. I learn best through examples & the only examples he does are the hw questions..Which he often changes the day before they are "due". However, he does not collect them. Does not answer questions well, gives the same answer repeatedly even if you still don't understand what he is trying to say.
This guy is a complete toolbox. He is probably the worst teacher at RIT, and can not pronounce his H's. ex. 4/3 translates to 4 turds.
This professor was useless and I would learn more just reading the textbook. In class he is for the most part a useless jerk, picking on students who have a hard time with the material. The tests are impossible unless you are gifted at calculus, a pretty poor professor for a class every student regardless of their previous class level has to take.
This guy was just awful. Don't ever ask him a question, because not only will he not answer it, he will tear into you for 10 minutes over incredibly minute details, and his goal is to make you feel as terrible as possible that you don't know calculus.
He is very hard. I took this class in high school and did fine but it seems harder now just one year later. When asked questions, he makes you feel even dumber. I suggest seeing him in office hours where he is more friendly even though he appears un-welcoming. I feel he isnt too thrilled with NTID students unfortunately. Look at other teachers too.
Proj.Based Calc III: As long as you can get over the fact that he's a pompous **** who sucks at conveying things and enjoys belittling you when you ask questions, you'll do fine. Often homework was thrown in at the last minute. Exams were tough, only 55min for ~8-10 problems but there was an auto ~10% curve. also, he has a slight accent.
Although he seems like a very bad professor, I'm experiencing one worse now and would kill to have had him again for Multi-Var. If he thinks your question is stupid he pretty much makes fun of you, but he definitely harps on DEFINITIONS! If you pay attention to strict details and know algebra well you will do well in his class. A = 85%(his curve)
He doesnt actually have solutions to his HW.So how were supposed to know if were doing the HW right, is beyond me. He spends the first half hour taking questions but he wont go over evry problem. NOT 1 PERSON FINISHED HIS TESTS IN THE 1.5 HRS HE GIVES!!They are outrageous!! He gives stupid labs in Maplesoft which is the most WORTHLESS software EVER
Gives a lot of homework, but by the end, you know the material amazingly well.
Didn't learn anything. Took class with new prof. I learned more in the first 20 min than in 3 weeks of his class.
He is an overzealous professor that does spend time belittling students if they ask questions. Spend more time fooling around than teaching the subject. Very bad teaching style, give lots of homework on subject that we just went over during the last 5 mins of the class.
Took him for matrix and boundary value problems. He is very smart but doesn't know how to communicate effectively and clear if you aren't willing to learn more out side the class than in you will not do good. Simply don't take him if you want a good grade n not work you behind off. And he give allot of homework.
Professor Bautista is easily the worst teacher I've had at RIT. Assigns homework, changes it night before its due, gives ridiculously long assignments. Gives review sheets for exams but they don't help because the exams are all different style questions. Talks to the class in a condescending tone the entire time.
Worst teacher I have ever had at RIT. Assign homework due for the following day and randomly add new questions at the last minutes. Homework and quizzes are totally unrelated to what's going to be on the exam. Has to spend hours explaining the homework rather than doing a good job teaching the subject in the first place.would not recommend,he's Bad
Dr. Bautista has been one of the greatest math teachers I have come across. He has incredible knowledge in the subject, and has very high expectations (which help incredibly in this course, and in later math courses). I highly recommend his classes. The class was not easy, but by the end, you will know Calculus better than 99% other calc students
Bautista knows his stuff very well. Only way you will get anywhere in his class is asking a solid amount of questions and do all of the homework thoroughly. He is not an easy grader or test giver. His tests seem to expect you to have mastered the subject, or close to it. I don't like him.
Homework is assigned and due almost every class. Tests are hard, but graded fairly.
Here is the thing about Bautista, he is one of the mist intelligent teachers i have ever had, and he teaches from the ground up, no the top down. As a result, he goes through things quickly but if you can keep up you will understand why you are doing what your doing. He can be rude if you ask a question he has already answered so try to avoid that.
Overall solid teacher. An 83 is considered an A in his grading system. Uses part of class time to go over homework and clear up any questions. Has a slight accent, but doesn't severely inhibit class.
If you do your work, ask questions and pay attention in his class (especially on definitions), you will get a good grade in the class (85%+ = A). He even lets you ask questions right before the exam! If you ask a question that's on the exam, he will answer it. He's tough but a great professor.
I took multivariable and vector with him. He belittles you if you answer a question wrong in class. He does not explain the material in a manner that is conducive to learning it for the first time. Homework was not worth nearly enough considering IT was teaching the material rather than him. Unclear on what assignments due at what time. Avoid.
Guy knows what he is talking about, smart but can not communicate it. He will belittle students if they answer a question wrong or if they ask a question at all. If he is teaching a higher level class don't take him, take it later or with someone else.
Guys, he is a great professor. His accent is not bad at all. If you pay attention in class, you will do well. He is willing to hep you understand materials and clarify any homework questions. If you want to learn maths, take him. He is tough but fair and you learn way more than anyone else. His class is my life changing experience.
Bautista is by far the worst calculus professor I've ever had. Example: One time he did this big problem on the board, a student asked "How did you do that step there?" Bautista answered: "What do you mean? I did algebra." The rest of the conversation went like that until the student shut his mouth. No one ever asked questions again.
Out of all of the teachers I have had he is by far the worst one. His lectures are boring and unhelpful and he will often berate students who ask questions. He rarely responds to his emails and is almost never in his office for office house. The average for his class is a 65, which with his curve becomes a solid B. Somethings wrong with that curve.
His classes are confusing and he tends to mock at some questions asked by students in class, or behave as if he was superior just because he is the professor and knows more. In fact, some friends did not want to ask due to his behavior. Also, the textbook is clearer than his classes. Tests are tough, but not impossible.
I would not recommend anyone to take Dr. Bautista. He only does proofs and doesn't really care if the students understand or not. He never really helps, especially in office hours. He gives about 30 hw assignments that only count for 6% of your grade, and take about 50 hours. He does curve the class but its still very hard.
I disliked him for about 2 weeks, but if you get to know his sassy-self he's a really awesome guy! Get him on your side and you're golden. He sometimes does get frustrated when his students don't know things and he'll get sassy, but you can give it right back to him and he doesn't mind. He's very smart and a fair grader. Loved the class!
Worst professor I've had by far. Exams are ridiculously hard and homework assignments take hours to complete even if you know what you're doing. Goes over material too quickly in class and if you have a question he makes you feel stupid for asking, like you're supposed to already know the material. Has a grading curve otherwise everyone would fail.
Terrible professor. You cannot get any help from him and you cannot ask him questions. He also insults students when they do not know how to do something or know an answer. Lectures are boring and his tests are not on what you were taught but rather extremely hard "special cases" of problems. Never keeps his word if he is to do something.
He is a good professor overall. Not very engaging or talkative but keeps his conversation to the point and knows his stuff.
In order to pass this class, I hope you have previous knowledge of calculus already. His lectures are long and tedious. He is very specific about what he wants but doesn't explain things in class very clearly. If you can, switch to another professor.
He makes you feel super bad for asking any questions at all in class
He sucks. This prof insults students if they ask questions, has long lectures that are impossible to be attentive in, is completely unhelpful both inside and outside of class, and overall doesn't seem to give a damn about whether his students pass or fail. Avoid taking his class at all costs.
When you first sit down, he blazes through a lot of things and if you're the type of person who easily keeps up with math its fine. For others that need time to digest it can be difficult as you will have to wait for him to ask for questions, he is notorious and rightfully so for being rude to people who are confused and can play word games.
Worst teacher I have ever had, laughs at you if you ask a question he thinks everyone should know, occasionally makes fun of you for it
Get him for Calc 2 and you might as well end yourself.
he is possibly one of the worst math teachers ever! he laughs and mocks you when you ask a question and he barely teaches you. He gives you the bare minimum for each topic so you only know how to a couple questions and the rest you have to look up how to do. I haven't heard him actually answer a question yet!
Unfortunately I got put into his class as a first year and didn't have say in it. As stated below, he mocks you for asking questions - if I had a PhD in mathematics I wouldn't be asking you would I? Avoid at all costs. He is a tough grader and his lectures suck and you'll literally be teaching yourself everything. Just terrible a terrible person.
As a first year, I found his class to make too many assumptions about what I knew. If you asked a question, he made you feel bad, and he constantly mocks people for not knowing "basic algebra", then doesn't explain how he reaches conclusions. Also, his tests didn't cover the same things we went over in class, and the tests were very difficult.
Everyone is hard on the poor guy and while no, I wouldn't choose to take him again, I will say that he is very smart and knows the material very well. If you can keep up in fast paced lectures and can learn well on your own you'll be ok.
Worst Professor I've had so far. Makes tests unnecessarily hard and then gets angry when half the class fails. Avoid at all costs.
you ask him genuine questions and he makes fun of you
If you're having difficulty in the class, good luck asking for help. He mostly responds to questions with "I did Algebra" and resumes to finish the problem. He rarely explains what he's writing and even when he does, he doesn't do a good job of explaining.
The guy just reads from the book and really offers no help outside of class. If you bring a problem to him, he will solve it for you, but does not really explain himself. He expects everything done his way and his way only so any outside experience might not be useful. Makes tests and quizzes way harder, try to find another prof for this course.
I was very concerned to take him after reading the reviews but was surprised. Most of his lectures cover topics at surface level so extra work is required outside of class to fully understand material. Lots of partial credit given on tests and decent curves. Quizzes every Friday and homework every night. Put time in outside class youll be fine.
I'm disgusted by the fact that he knows his students average a D on his exams& he's completely satisfied with that. He just curves the letter grades so that a 61 is a C instead of a D. No extra credit;no swap final for worst exam score. No matter how hard you try, you'll get to the exam and it'll be way harder than any examples in class&hw.
Don't bother asking questions about anything you've just learned. He'll just roast you. You're better off watching you tube demos on how to do Calc 2 than go to class and ask questions.
The guy criticizes people for when they dont understand something. Half the time you ask a question he wont let you finish speaking before he is accusing you of not explaining what you dont understand.
Bautista is an incredibly smart man but he has great difficulty effectively transferring his knowledge to students. He teaches from the book and goes through material pretty quickly so often work is required outside of class to understand it well. The test questions he gives are much harder then any HW problem but they are graded relatively fairly.
Bautista's class is incredibly difficult. It does not matter what other teachers have taught you in the past, if you do not do the problems his way, they are wrong. If you are able to switch out of his class, do so.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The guy single-handedly made me abhor math. He does not grade any of your homework so you have absolutely no idea what to correct until the quizzes and tests because his grader doesn't care. Whenever you ask him a question, be ready to get roasted and feel stupid about yourself.
He really makes sure you know your stuff! You want to make sure to go to every class because he expects you to know his lectures inside and out. Lots of partial credit! You get 5/10 points on a problem just for writing down something SIMILAR to the concept of the problem. Tests are hard but they made the final a breeze. Homework is on Webassign.
This professor did not provide any feedback on assignments. Homework didn't have solutions posted which made it almost impossible to learn what you did wrong.
has bad handwriting so it is hard to read what he writes on the board, never explains anything, if you ask a question he will make fun of you. if you ask how he got to a answer he gives answer along the lines of "I used algebra." I ended up dropping the class and enrolling in MATH 182 with a different prof. do not recommend.
Bad handwriting and makes fun of students. does not give good answers to questions. homework is done half on web assine and half on paper turned in. I switched to an 8 am Math182 with different prof over staying in my 4 pm with him. did not regret it. avoid at all costs.
He's all about teaching you the right way when you get things wrong. This would be fine if he also didn't constantly berate students for struggling with the content (a lot of students think he's pretty rude). Not friendly/approachable/easy to understand. Homework on WebAssign and written, I would suggest do both but you can get away with only web.
Professor Bautista knows the material. Such a shame he can't convey this knowledge in class though. He is harsh/makes fun of students. His lectures are not helpful (I had to use Khan Academy). His quizzes & exams always have the most extreme cases and are very challenging. Only good thing is that grades are heavily curved. Beware!
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR, Dr. Bautista shows no respect for students and routinely chastises them for wrong answers in front of the entire class. He assigned homework that was due the day of the final and taught new material the class before the final. he does not stop when asked. Made us feel stupid and crushed my desire to learn.
Bautista is an interesting man, and he likes to brush over very minor subjects that you normally wouldn't think much of, yet then proceeds to have an entire homework based on it. He does not offer any accommodations whatsoever, and if you are someone who knows that they are not even 95% familiar with the concepts being taught, when you will fail.
He is extremely difficult and condescending
Maurino gets quite a bit of hate, and I understand why. However, I don't agree with it. Sometimes people in math class ask some horrifically stupid questions, and he'll call 'em out on it. Despite this, he will then proceed to answer the question very thoroughly. This makes him extremely entertaining as well as helpful.
Professor Bautista is someone that I respect and fear. He is often misunderstood as being angry when he is being passionate about wanting students to know something. He is very generous on partial credit and you need to have open ears and thick skin to get by in his class. He isn't perfect, but he isn't the worst professors I have had. Work Hard!
I also thought about giving him a zero but rate my professors won't allow it. Seriously the worst professor i have had at RIT. I got COVID and he never provided me with accommodations to catch up with the material. He does not do zoom meetings because he says they are a waste of time and students with covid should be penalized when they miss class.
Professor Bautista is borderline mean to students, but its because they ask stupid questions. The problem here is that it created fear in the classroom. Nobody wanted to ask questions or ask him to slow down for fear of being berated. Definitely do not take this class as your first college math experience. Get comfortable learning on your own.
I love math, it has always been my favorite subject. However, class with Bautista made me question everything. The course was difficult and unrewarding. His lectures are fine; typical notes and examples. However, he is bitter and harsh towards his students in an extremely hostile manner. I'm here to learn, not be yelled at for asking questions.
He tells students that if they do not understand a topic it is because they do not belong. He skimmed through lectures and missed key points that we were tested on. He announced to the class which students have accommodations and treated the students with accommodations unfairly which when reported he did nothing about. Overall he is a rude person.
Do not take this professor. Gives way too much homework, condescending towards students, and breezes through his lecture slides as if he expects us to understand everything.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He will berate you for asking questions. He will not allow for your accommodations. He does not teach in lecture and expects you to know things that he did not teach you nor are they in the textbook. Your mental health WILL suffer from taking his class. His reputation is so unbelievably accurate.
The material for the class has been the same since he started teaching in 1983, and it is awful every year. Be ready for consistent class averages of 55 on exams with pop quizzes the same day you're learning that material. I have not heard one student who has ever had him say anything good, even other staff members would agree. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This class feels like entering a painful battleground. Pop quizzes are tough and frequent. Exams are challenging due to inadequate teaching. This class is a waste of time, not worth the credit. Lectures lack clarity, midterms are unexpectedly tough. Homework is daunting even with Chegg. Another professor would be better. Tragic experience.
Take him and there is no way you could POSSIBLY have a worse professor! Watch him: Write stuff on the board in complete silence with very poor to no explanation; Berate you for asking a simple question; Say you aren't ready for calc 2 and should retake calc 1 (apparently we have unlimited money). You can pass with a 35% which is very telling...
Everyone's advice: "don't take Bautista". Doesn't know how to teach. Half-yells at his students when they have a question or don't answer his questions with the exact wording he wants but we don't know. Everyone fails exams -averages in the 50s and consistent with previous years- and he doesn't seem to care.
Beware of damage to mental health. Pop quizzes every week that have an average of 60 every time. Bautista belittles us during lecture if anyone doesn't understand something. His explanations are half-coherent and he moves through them far too quickly.
no just dont
Although I was able to get an okay grade in his class, I felt like I was taking a math major course. He explained material like we would know it already and then belittled students if they didn't understand at first. I don't recommend taking him. Please find someone else.
We were assigned a 4 letter identifier to use on all work with grade penalties for name usage. In the previous semester, most of the class was in the C range or below (45-65%). Lectures consisted of slides of theory with very generalized examples. He told us not to take notes cause we wouldn't be able to write things down and follow the concepts.
Tough class with challenging exams and pop quizzes. Lectures lack clarity, and the professor can be unhelpful. However, using study tools like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helped me get through it.
Can RIT fire this man already?
Funny guy, very understanding and don't be afraid to ask questions.
You need to go to lectures, and he usually gives a "pop quiz" every Thursday; they are difficult. I enjoyed being in his class, but he only goes over proofs and shows you formulas. He rarely works through problems and makes sure you can do the whole process.
The worst professor I have had at RIT and probably the worst teacher I have had ever
Very condescending, basically makes people who ask questions feel stupid for not knowing the answers. Does not do any practice problems in class making it very hard to learn the material and does not provide study material. Online homework once or twice a week, quizzes once a week, two in class exams and finals. DO NOT TAKE
Homework and exams were mostly disconnected from what was being taught during lectures and the only way to succeed is to learn the material outside of class. Exams are not a test on understanding material but on how quickly you can work. He was consistently rude to students who asked questions, and refused to answer questions on multiple occasions.
Bautista is strict but not a bad professor. I was scared to take him b/c of his rating but his class was honestly pretty good. His lectures are in-depth but understandable and he provides you the notes ahead of time. He cracks jokes, always asks if we have questions and is not a strict grader. His course was hard but engaging and even rewarding.
Professor Bautista is a rare breed, an endangered species. The class is taught as it would be back in the day. The content is challenging, so students can make mistakes and learn from them. I learned a lot in this class. If you want to learn, this class is for you. If you just want the credit, still try out this class.
Over all very rude and quiet. Difficult to understand but unquestionably smart. However he assumes everyone is as smart and will yell at you if you don't understand.
