Mavis is a horrible teacher. She doesn't even try to understand students questions, she never answers the actual question asked. She "forgets" to go to appt when you make them. Yells a lot...not respectful. Tests come right from book/quizzes

she does not care about her students or their questions. she makes you feel stupid and gives an attitude. doesn't reply to emails or calls. she changed the date of the exam to the last day before break because 'students won't come.' WITCH!

Mavis does not answer questions, she is never helpful, and she does not care about her students at all. If you take a class with her never don't expect to see you corrected exam until about one month after you've taken the exam!

Horrible, I can't believe she is still here. Do not take her. She is not respectful to students. Pretty much is there because she has to be, does not care if you learn the material or not. She is never prepared or on time for class.

I am struggling in this class and she will NOT help me. She yells at us to visit office hours but when I went, she wasn't even there! Someone needs to get rid of this woman!

Mavis is by far the worst prof at CMU. She is unclear, not helpful, and makes you feel stupid for asking questions! never finishes an answer when she does an example. Does like to give "group tests" to grade less papers and typically leaves the room for coffee during exams

Mavis Pararai is by far the worst teacher I ever had . I got an A in Math 105, and becuase of this women I had withdrawl from my first College class becuase I was failing. CMU is lacking in the math dept...

She's so sexy! (J/k) This woman is a horrible professor. She doesn't have a clue how to teach- probably the worst professor I've ever had. I'm lucky I had up to precalculus in HS, and knew the material already. Otherwise, I'd have been totally lost. What an awful professor :(

Well, she stood me up when we had a planned appointment for me, I told her how I was scared to fail, she felt bad for me, and started grading my tests fairly easily and marking things right that were really incorrect. still a terrible teacher

for a class that was just supposed to be a review from highschool, she almost failed me!!! she teaches way too fast, cant speak english very well, and left the entire class confused- DAILY!!! she also gets mad when you dont understand right away, which is extremely frusterating- she will pick you apart in front of the entire class. "ahh we togeda heea??" lol

If you want to fail take her! She is very unhelpful and not to mention rude! This was her first year teaching so maybe she can change but I highly suggest taking another teacher!

She has a strong accent which makes it hard to understand her and is RUDE. She laughed when someone asked a question, says come to her office for help. In her office she was worse, she was no help and will not talk about your grades, gives extra credit then changes her mind about how much it will be worth and and if she will take it up or not.

Her notes are organized but when you ask her a question in class she gives very confusing answers. She is never in her office during posted office hours. Don't expect any help from her.

I'm an accounting major so I don't exactly suck at math. This woman made it really hard! I had some health problems mid way through the semester and came to talk to her about them. I explained to her why I missed class and she said that she was going to fail me for not taking the class seriously.(I'd had 2 seizures and had to be life flighted!)

you get use to her accent after awhile but she is terrible at teaching. if you ask her a question, she makes you feel like an idiot for even asing it and tells you to keep doing problems. i wouldn't reccomend her to any of my friends.

She does not teach anything. She shows formulas and solutions, then quickly erases everything, we have not time to copy. Then she gives pop quizzes on things she never really made clear to us. It seems she wants to show off or something. Rude to students who ask questions, lectures at us for not doing well in tests. I don't know how IUP keeps her.

Not my favorite professor. She thinks she is right most of the time and when any student asks her a question, she automatically gets louder and basically makes you feel stupid for asking a question. She is very rude and I will never take her again!

NOT my first choice, would not take her again. If you go to class, you have a fairly good chance of doing well. But you have to pay attention. Allows cheat sheets on exams and quizzes.

I wouldn't mind her if she spoke up and didn't rush through things. Just the first 3 classes and I knew that she wasn't a good teacher.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER. She never responds to emails and if she does something wrong like not opening a quiz its your fault. She never really explains anything either. So be prepared to go back and teach yourself. I would definitely avoid this professor at all cost.

I would not have taken this class if it were not required for my major. Overall poor at teaching and interacting with students. Will never admit that she is in the wrong.

This class is literally a nightmare. She barely explains things and the homework, quizzes, and exams are all completely different than what we go over. Makes a huge deal out of attendance, but then didn't even take it. Claims she wants her students to pass the class, but then doesn't answer you in or out of class and makes it harder to pass.

She said we could not email her if the wifi goes out, etc. when taking tests, she said (through email) we will not be able to retake it. We never go over any of the material before tests, and she doesn't allow us to take notes. She doesn't answer any of your emails unless you do it the way she wants to (in her syllabus). "I am not your friend"

This professor is by far one of the most degrading and disrespectful out of any professor at IUP. Starting out the class usually reminding us we will fail and giving NO motivation to the class at all. Her tests are NOT online as other reviews mentioned and they never are in relation to the study subjects she tells us to do, etc. DO NOT TAKE!!!

She is a horrible professor. We have a quiz one day and the whole class comes in to take it but she couldn't figure out how to print the quiz off so instead of emailing her students before the class she comes to class and messes around for 10 minutes and then decides to send us all home. WHY NO EMAIL??? NO COMMUNICATION.

RUDE AND UNORGANIZED. Never answers emails never talks nicely to students and doesn't teach. I would recommend not taking her ever! She always complains about her students TO HER STUDENTS. Really doesn't make learning what so ever enjoyable.

if you are looking for a sign after you registered for her class DROP IT WHILE YOU CAN or DO NOT TAKE HER. she is very well the WORST professor at IUP even the other professors know this.

The first 10 minutes are always the same with her complaining people send her too many emails and too many people miss class. I have had to teach myself everything this year off of youtube, the dean needs to talk to her about how she treats students and conducts class... I don't know how she still has a job here. making fun of students is not okay!

By far one of the WORST professors I have ever had. I took Math217 for my second time and she not only speeds through slides, she does not bother to take attendance yet stresses the importance, she also is not accessible outside of class (via email), and she won't let you make anything up even if it's excused. TL;DR: do not take her, anyone else

If there is one piece of advice you listen to make it this... do NOT take stats with this professor. She speeds through every single lecture and when students ask questions, she is extremely rude and belittles them. I have never felt more disrespected by a professor for asking a simple question.

She's incredibly rude, and will belittle you in front of the entire class for asking questions or answering a question wrong. She spends the first 10 minutes of every period complaining about the class. (seriously.. every day.) Her lectures are hard to follow and lack a lot of information as compared to what you'll see on the quizzes and homework.

The syllabus does not contain dates, other than tentative test dates. This professor preaches about the importance of time management but doesn't give due dates or make the work available until shortly before it's due, even for online courses. Dr. Pararai is short and unapproachable, though some of this may be cultural as she is from Zimbabwe.

As a senior, Mavis Pararai is easily the worst professor I have had. I had online stats and extremely vague notes from the in person class was posted and that was all the material we were given. Quizzes were posted as late as 6:00pm and were due by 11:59pm that same night and there was no chance of a make up if missed. Just awful. Truly awful.

Worst. Prof. Ever. A quiz was posted and available only on Saturday. I had checked myLab on Thursday to ensure I was caught up on my work and missed an assignment due on Friday as well that was not posted when I checked it at 4:00pm on Thursday. No make ups are allowed for her class. So unless you check myLab every 5 minutes you are screwed.

Please avoid this class at all costs thats all i can say. In general stay away from her period

Absolutely terrible always makes mistakes, says she's going to give extra credit never did to the students that showed up made us write our names down twice to receive it for nothing. Very nice lady but when it comes to taking her class its awful, don't ask questions if u are confused she'll get pissed.

Every class starts with her complaining that noone comes, but she doesnt take attendance. She assigns alot of homework. If you try to ask a question during the lecture she will berate you or tell you that you need to go to office hours instead of answering the question. Some of the questions on the exams are nothing like what was learned inclass

She talks about email etiquette and time management but rarely follows her own advice. She barely responds to emails, gives unclear deadlines, and once made me wait a month to retake an exam due to a glitch. Her lack of organization and communication makes it frustrating to succeed in her class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! She assigns 60+ questions for homework, is rude to all of her students whether or not you do your work, and spends half of the lecture complaining rather than teaching. She does not post notes online and there is always a quiz then a test the day after. Don't ignore her reviews like I did!!!

Avoid Dr. Pararai at all costs, she consistently berates students for asking questions, regardless of how simple or complex they are. She called out a student for being lazy when said student was sick and asked for the makeup work. She often confuses herself with her own content. From a student who did well in the class, find another professor.

Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't respond to emails if you don't use the exact format she wants you to, but she doesn't even follow that format. She does not take any make-up work, even with a medical excuse. I also don't understand how she has child endangerment charges, but is still employed by the university.

By far the worst math professor she complains that no one comes to class, I come to class and I can barely understand the material, she moves too fast through lectures, The homework takes at least 3 hours to do. Don't even get me started on her attitude i never hated a teacher more in my life. Do not take her class even if she's the last resort.

absolutely do not recommend. I had an A in her class as we only had a few grades which were all 90% and above. Then gave me a C on midterms and simply never responded to emails. I could have talked to her but seeing how she was with other students... just no. save yourself if this is the only option, wait till next sem to take it with ANYONE else.

Absolutely awful. She uses Pearson and she doesn't let us know when stuff is due. If you don't check DAILY, you'll miss assignments. You aren't allowed to miss a test or assignment no matter WHAT, but she constantly pushes back tests because she does not "feel like it" that day. She tried to assign a quiz over a break and gave one on a Saturday.

The worst professor I've had. She gives no due dates, surprise quizzes, and says she's “tired” when you try to turn in work. Rude, unhelpful, and constantly insults Americans. No communication, no support—just chaos and disrespect. Made learning miserable.

THE WORST. It's taken me just about everything to not withdraw from the course. I never get below a 79 on the homework, and she is threatening to fail me for not coming to office hours. I went to office hours and she reiterated that I need to be in class or fail. I have never missed a day of her class, even when my aunt died. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

I understand that this course is not the easiest but Pararai makes it 10x harder. She's nice when you go to her by yourself but overall she was very disrespectful to many students. I had to teach myself how to do the work because the way she taught it just doesn't make sense.

DO NOT TAKE HER! Surprised she still has a job. She'd end class early saying she “wants to go home.” No deadlines or points listed. When asked questions, she'd say to email her—no time to answer. Made loud noises during the final and rushed students. Worst of all, she put student emails on the screen and mocked them. Completely unprofessional.

Avoid. Demands email etiquette, but does not respond to emails. Sent her a pic of a medical excuse once for bronchitis saying that I was out of all classes for the week. She responded with "bring proof." when I told her I couldn't make that week's quiz. I took stats in high school (got an A), she taught it in the most incomprehensible way possible.

Do your very best to avoid her at all costs. I won't go into details, but if you read her other reviews on this platform, you'll have a pretty good idea. In my opinion, she's much worse than what the other people have been able to explain. On top of being extremely rude and condescending, I have never met a more unreasonable person in my life.

Yeah just the absolute worst professor I have ever had. Rude to every student in there, her accent is super heavy and makes it sometimes impossible to understand. Super slow at teaching the material and assigns homework's that take hours. Should be fired because she has a case of almost having a literal child endangerment charge.

If I could give a NEGATIVE review, I would, but 1 is the lowest allowed. Everything you're reading in the reviews is true—AVOID this class. It's miserable. She's hard to understand, gives random heavy homework, and her emails have spelling errors and randomly ends class early because she is tired. She also moved every exam date from the syllabus.
