George Max Dery is the top notch CJ professor at CSUF. The easiness rating of 3 is because his exams are all large blue book essays. However, you will not find a more clearer lecture, or a professor more willing to work with you in his office hours.

He is an awesome lecturer with a clear command of the subject. He is a former Deputy District Attorney from Los Angeles. I absolutely loved all of his classes!

Dery,is a great professor his lectures are always fun and interesting, you will need to study for his essay only exams and there are no research papers.

Dery is super entertaining, slightly spastic but I would take him again. No traditional text, you have to know the law itself, not cases. Studying is important because the exams are essays and he is detail oriented.

Very crazy teacher but a very great person. His class was extra interesting and entertaining. Tests are tough as he is word-per-word all essay test. He is also a very good person to talk to. Be prepared to take an extensive amount of notes though.

All I can really tell you is NEVER skip lecture and NEVER miss getting the notes if you do miss a class. There are only 3 parts to your grade for his class, Test I, Test II, and Test III. Max Dery is a goofie Hottie. Dery got jokes!!! Could never fall asleep in that class, this guy is loud, i mean literally. His teaching style is very clear and you learn useful material for dodging cops, tickets and walking out of court with ease. U'll think like a lawyer

Fun class. LOUD! Don't sit in the fron row if you like to be quiet. Don't miss any classes. The tests are very specific essay questions. I missed one day and the bulk of the final was that one day! Dammit! Great teacher, hard, but helpful

Dery is an awesome teacher even though he's a tough grader. Don't miss a class or you'll bomb your tests. He is probably the most helpful teachers I've had and is eager to help all his students. He will definitly keep you from falling asleep in class.

One of the best teachers at CSUF. Although he is a tough grader, his policies are clear, consice, and open to discussion. The course is simplicity and filled with his personal anicdotes and stories about his past career as an ADA. Definitely a class one looks forward to, and a class from which one learns more than enough.

No falling asleep in this class! Max is the most enthusiastic professor in history. His logic is so clear, that you just have to follow it. Great class!

Very enthusiastic teacher. Everything explained very clearly. Take good notes and this class will not be a problem. Tests are mostly blue book, but its on the notes he gives.

Awesome professor. Very funny indeed. Class is easy as long as you study lecture notes. He really knows what he is talking about.

Don't sit up front...Dery has a habit of taking your highlighter or whiteout and using it on your notebook. He's fun & challenging-but very clear. I learned a lot & had a good time. Tests are tough, just make sure you apply the definitions-(know them well). Don't mess up on the 1st exam-it's hard to make up for it-only 3 exams-all worth 50 pts.

Awsome Teacher... Very difficult class... one hint... the test are multi-choice and essay... the multi is not too hard... but the essay is comprised of a LAW I.E murder and the second part is usually a defence I.E insanity.... so be very prepaired... Don't! miss any classes if you must make sure you have a partner who takes good notes....!

dery is one of the most amazing teachers i have ever had. there is a lot of hard work involved in passing his class, but there is no reason to not do well. he is very clear about what he expects. just study hard for the tests and you'll do fine.

He is a very nice teacher and very, I mean very energetic. In class during the lectures he is so hyped up when he talks and sometimes raises his voice so loud it makes you jump in your seat or gives you a headache. He is a pretty cool guy though and the class is straight forward so there are no suprises. If you dont mind loudness take him.

He's hilarious!!!! Definately no falling asleep in this class. His tests require memorization of laws and then application of them to real case scenarios. The studying is kinda time consuming but his hypotheticals bring the material to life so... if you go to class you should do fine. I highly recommend this teacher!

Do not take this class if you have a full-time job, a part-time job, if you are taking more than 2 classes or if you have a life. This class will consume you. Dery will give you 20 to 22 rules of law for only 2 questions on the exam. You have to know every rule word for word, if you do not get the rule right he'll dock points! He is a funny man.

Take this class only if you plan on showing up every class. Dery is probably one of he most interesting teachers on the face of the planet giving he teaches penal code all day. Dry subject matter delivered in a unique and interesting manner. I would definately take him again. I am proud of the B i got in this class.

Very crazy in class. He is odd, funny and loud. You are tested on what he teaches in class, so you must attend. Reading is not mandatory. Tests aren't easy, you must study. Don't bother memorizing the actual codes or case names, just know the basis of the laws and how they are intrepreted - well. No papers, just three exams (with essays).

the guy is hilarious!! not to mention: loud & psycho. he'll yell in the middle of his lecture. for sure, you won't fall asleep in class. if you yawn, the whole class will know, lol. he makes the class fun!! his tests are hard. they're straight off the notes. you MUST memorize the elements to the codes, not the code number, but the elements & name.

Dery is a pretty cool teacher. He's entertaining and he explains each element with a clear example. Tests are not easy but just memorize all the elements and you should be fine. Flash cards are what helped me most. No papers or extra credit, just 3 exams. We didn't really use the textbook, just show up to class and take good notes.

AMAZING professor!!!This professor can make any subject interesting!He is funny,smart,and fair.During class,'lectures'are anything but;they are very interactive and hilarious!This is a class any Law Student or Criminal Justice student would enjoy. Highly interesting class. Very funny man. hes very loud and startling, no sleepin in his class for sure. This class isnt so bad, its very very interesting... and he makes it interesting.. he is very ... animated.. is the right word to use... be sure to sit in the front so you dont miss out on any of the action.

Awesome teacher! Dery will yell/scream (dont be alarmed) to get students attention or to just emphasize an important point. This guy could of been an actor they way he talks and tells his stories. Very educational, clear, and motivational! I highly recommend him! I would take him in another class.

Defy is the BEST teacher I've ever had. So damn funny! Makes subject so interesting and you remember stuff because of it. He's a genuine guy & if you are CJ major I suggest you take this man before you graduate. Jim Carrey like humor, won't be able to fall asleep. 3 exams, all accum. He subbed for our Law, Politics and Society class for about a month; I wish he had stayed on for the whole class. The material itself can be difficult, but being law that's to be expected. What's great about Dery is he makes it really interesting. He can be a little random/crazy, which can make note writing a bit hard, but it's part of his charm.

Great teacher, explains till you understand. Three tests. However, if you dont memorize verbatim, will fail tests. Not good for those not good at memorizing verbatim.

Dery is by far the best teacher I have had in my academic career. He's funny, quirky, and makes a complex/hard subject fun to learn. Class was more than entertaining. The class is a lot of work, but if you study everything he writes on the board (verbatim), you will be fine. I would take him for every class if I could. Amazing teacher! Take him!

Good evening!!! I took Dery for 310, 485, 486 and never had to buy any book or do one word of reading. Just listen to his outstanding lectures, take great notes, write them down in a blue book on test day (3 tests) and you will pass with flying colors. If you have any problems just ask and he will give more assistance than necessary.

Loved his class. His test are difficult and do require you to study. If you are lazy do not take him because you will fail. He is a great teacher and cares about his students.

One of greatest professors ive had at CSUF, had him for a 3 hour class but hes so entertaining, funny, and loud that the time flew by quick. Very straight forward class, book not mandatory, 2 exams thats it. Study everything he writes down!! I did that and got an A easily. Really cares for his students and very understanding. Definitely a must take

Professor Dery is an amazing teacher. He likes to come into class & be loud & is always has a smile on his face. The class material is a little hard. There are three test each worth 50 points. If you have a hard time memorizing things then I suggest you don't take this class. His test is usually 30 points essay & 20 points multiple choice.

Dery is the most animated professor I have had besides Lovell. He's brilliant and hilarious, making it easy to learn about the law without becoming distracted. He runs his courses like law classes. You are taught the rule, how it came to be that way and the cases related to it. It's pretty much story telling with an engaging storyteller.

I love this guy. He has a great sense of humor and enthusiasm for the class. The grade was based solely on the two midterms and one final, all worth the same amount of points so study hard. After I failed my first exam I visited him in his office hours and he was very helpful. I managed to get an A on the second exam. Exams solely based on lecture

2 midterms and a final. 10 TF, 10 hard multiple choice and an essay worth 30 points. I found the scantron part more difficult than the essay because it was tricky. You really have to know common law and current PC's. Essay: state ruling, analyze hypothetical case and conclude it. Dery is an amazing professor! Very enthusiastic. Don't buy the books

Professor Dery is extremely entertaining. He knows his stuff but... his exams are ridiculous. Multiple choice, which under normal circumstances would be fine except that he gives options such as, Attendance is a) mandatory b) not mandatory c) sometimes mandatory d) one of the above is correct e) all of the above are correct and an essay. Tricky!

One of my favorite professors. He is laugh-out-loud hilarious! Really made the class fun and exciting. The material is hard, and studying is a must. I made flashcards, memorizing the laws is key for the tests. I bought his online text, but it wasn't necessary to pass.

Dery is HARD but man is he passionate . You learn through his non PC humor and the man has a passion for his job. Challenge accepted indeed!

There are only 3 exams and he curves them. His lectures are clear as day! If you can remember things easily, this class will get you an A. I found the multiple choice easier than essay, but both really easy, IF YOU REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT HE SAYS. If you dont have good memorization, study at least a weak ahead. Thats all to his class- memorization.

Professor Dery is hands down my favorite professor. His teaching methods will make you wish he was your teacher for other courses. He is very funny &amp; taught criminal law in an entertaining way by using real case laws. Consists of 3 tests and that's it. No extra credit, no papers, no homework, Show up, take GOOD NOTES, read, and it's super easy.

only 3 exams. Make flashcards of the notes he writes on the board and learn them word for word. Very wild (almost Jim Carry like) which might put some students off. can't stress enough to make flashcards, you'll need to remember elements of crime word for word or you won't pass exam.

don't need textbook at all to get an A. Just come to class every day and write down whats on the board and then make flashcards of the notes for each exam. If you don't make flashcards and memorize cases word for word you won't pass. Notes aren't posted online so you HAVE to come to class to get them.

Professor Dery was amazing! Although his tests are hard, he offers a lot of information through his lectures and usually gives you a pretty good idea what the tests will consist of. You definitely cannot slack off in this class or you will fail!

I really suggest to buy the textbook. It's expensive but will help you a lot for his class especially because all the examples he provides will be in the textbook. He will put things on the exam that is not in his lectures but that are in the textbook. HE IS VERY LOUD and funny. There will never be a dull moment in his class. 10/10 recommend him.

I wish I could take Professor Dery for all of my classes! This class is heavily graded on the exams that are half written half multiple choice. The exams are rigorous, but Dery really inspires you to be the best you can be! If you wish to go into Law, you need to take Dery!

Grade is 100% based off of 3 exams, all weighted the same. Half the exams are multiple choice and the other half is a written portion. Dery makes lectures so interesting and keeps students engaged. I would recommend taking him and making flash cards to memorize the material. If you want an easy class dont take him. But if you do youll learn a lot

Go to class. Take notes. He does not use any powerpoints but he makes every sessiona enjoyable. Half the test are multiple choice and the other half you have to recite law from memory.

Grades are based off of 3 exams, 50 points each. Every class is a new lecture, most of the time very interesting but does come across dull subjects. He does grade on a curve which is great. There is a lot of reading so good luck.

Professor Dery is a great teacher but his classes are pretty hard. 3 Exams only but there is A LOT of information to process and he's very picky on his essay questions. If you miss a single word or don't know the law verbatim you will lose A LOT of points.

Online Covid Review: Does curve his exams, no extra credit, does record his lectures, and post them. Remember the rules/facts of each case as most of the material on the test is from his lectures and barely from the book. I suggest to not stack this class with your other hard classes as this class can take a lot out of you.

Dery's teaching style is a mixture of Will Ferrell and Socrates, fantastic professor. The class material is covered in a manner that is memorable and super applicable for anyone going into a criminal justice profession.
