O Chem is hard in general for most students, but his practice quizzes very much resembled what the actual quizzes were (7 quizzes, 1 final). If he realized a quiz was too hard or he was not teaching the best, he adjusted to the students needs and/or help people's grades. Super caring and understanding which I think almost everyone could agree on.
5 quiz, 1 drop. the quizzes are super hard (40% quiz, 45% final, 15% hw). He includes something that is not covered really well in lecture, considering there's only 2hours of lecture/ week. The workload is definitely not like a 2unit course. more like a 4unit. reasonable that he's not very clear in explaining stuff, new prof.
Dont take him! Avoid him! final worth 45% of your grade. 87% is A, the average of the quizzes( 5 quiz, drop 1) are like 60% something. Lecture is super confusing, the HW and the quiz seem to be irrelevant to each other. The way he lectures is kinda confusing, take 10 min to go over very "test heavy" concept, 40 min to go over something not on quiz
Use a confusing HW website, not helpful at all, a wasting of time to do his HW. HW, lecture and quizzes seem like totally unrelated stuff. Lecture super confusing, test on stuff that weren't covered well in lecture. Don't understand what he was trying to teach... Take other prof if you can. BTW 87% is an A, which is high compare to other chem class
Ochem is hard regardless, but Helix seems to genuinely care about his students getting a good education. The class is super quiz/test heavy, but the homework provides a nice buffer. Practice quizzes very closely resemble the actual exams. I enjoyed this class as much as I could enjoy an ochem course & would definitely take his class again.
Helix's lectures are unclear and the homework platform breaks down every week. Deadlines and OH are constantly being changed at random so it is impossible to get help or plan for this class. Quizzes are 40% and the final is 45% of your grade. The material is hard and his lack of clear instruction makes it so much harder than it needs to be.
While organic chemistry is difficult by default, I felt that he was transparent about issues behind the scenes of the course and the difficulty of the subject matter. He recognized when a concept was not thoroughly taught or emphasized and would give extra points on quizzes because of it. I recommend him to everyone!
best Ochem professor ever. reply email quicker than all professor I had before. caring about students give extra credits . allow cheatsheets during exam. take him!!!!
(For other comments) All the UCD CHE8 series use Mastering Chem, so blame that for weird HW. Very caring professor! He adjusted his teaching methods based on our complaints and gave us 1 page (front and back) of notes for each quiz and 7 pages for the final! Watch lectures (they are recorded) & PRACTICE with his practice quizzes and you'll do fine!
BEST CHEM PROFESSOR AT DAVIS! He cares about his students, and wants us to do well. Even though CHE 8A is a confusing class he made it better, lectures were super comprehensive and recorded. His notes and practice quizzes made it easy to practice. Sometimes the readings do help, but they aren't mandatory.
He is the First-year professor and also the first professor I leave the comment with. He recorded the video for us even when he is sick. The lowest quiz dropped to make the OChem less tough than I expected. recommended!!
Helix was a great professor that made Ochem a lot easier through his great class structure and great lectures. Highly recommend taking him.
Ochem is not an easy subject but Ive never encountered a more caring and accommodating chemistry professor in my years at Davis. He wanted his students to pass and listened to our concerns and adjusted. Practice quizzes and homework were helpful for quizzes and the final. If you have to take ochem try to get Helix!
He is very accommodating to students needs and concerns as he constantly adjust the class. Quizzes are similar to the practice quizzes and he let us use a cheat sheet for each quiz and a 7 page cheat sheet front and back for the final. Pretty good lectures and they were recorded. Lots of practice problems which were extremely helpful.
Professor Helix was super caring & accommodating! His quizzes & especially final were personally a little challenging for me because I wasn't able to understand some of the topics he explained in class. Nonetheless, he's very knowledgeable, listens to feedback, & answers questions readily. He tried his best to make sure we get a high class average!
He alter lec to our emailed suggestions. Very accommodating where he pushed back quizzes due to Thanksgiving holiday. Answers questions during lec, patient. Textbook reading helps you familiarize lec material. Held OH during finals week. Straightforward exams. We're allowed to have notes for quizzes and the final in F2021. Be sure thank him @ end.
Helix is awesome! In our first quiz, he noticed that we were all struggling, so he gave us extra credit and asked for feedback because he wanted all of us to understand the material. He took all of our suggestions in stride. The quizzes are still hard if chem isn't your thing, but practice quizzes and readings are extremely helpful!
Professor Helix is one of the most accommodating and understanding professors Ive had, by far. If issues like cancelled lectures come up(which is inevitable), he doesnt blame the students and instead works with us to iron things out. The recommended textbook content he assigns is highly recommended. Take him! Hes awesome!
Ochem is hard in general, but this professor is so understanding. He genuinely wants to help his students pass and asks for feedback when he sees the class struggling. This was his first year & he really did the best he could given the circumstances. Yes lecture is heavy but practice! Quiz every 2 weeks but practice!
At first I was a little iffy about taking a prof I've never heard of (because he just graduated with his Ph. D from Berk at the time of this writing!) But he's so caring and understanding and very approachable. IT's an O-chem class so obviously you have to buckle down for the work but I would take him again for my future classes
Max was a great lecturer. The online HW system is very tedious and annoying so make sure you find a classmate to help each other out.
Helix's class has been the easiest chem class I have taken in college. He gives practice quizzes for each quiz and a practice final. 1 out of 5 quizzes is dropped, which is pretty generous. Do be aware that the final is 45% of the grade, but if you study you'll be ok. The quizzes and final are a reasonable difficulty: not insanely tricky.
Professor Helix was really good at explaining concepts. His lectures consisted of mostly practice problems which were really helpful for quizzes. The textbook is easy to understand. Theres kind of a lot of quizzes but he makes them fair. The final was very manageable if you studied. Provides a lot of practice resources.
The students who took Helix for 8B in Fall 2021 love him. Its not because his ability, its because they bullied him into letting them use a 1 page front and back cheat sheet for each quiz and a 7 page cheat sheet for the final. The 8A class did not receive this. Final is 45% of your grade, no curve. Lowest homework and quiz are dropped. Good luck
It's his first time teaching ochem here at UC Davis, and while some lectures were a bit vague at times, I will cut him a lot of slack since he's new. He responds very fast to Piazza and email, there are tons of OH, and his quizzes are pretty similar to his practice quizzes. Practice, as ochem is not an easy topic (better than physics though).
He is the most understanding and caring professor I have had at UCD. He was open to feedback and acted on it immediately. He wants people to succeed and as long as you reach out for help, he will help you out. There were weekly quizzes and hw assignments due the same day, highly recommend you start hw early as it'll help you grasp the material.
Professor Helix was definitely one of the best professors I have had here at UC Davis. His lectures are clear and he responds to emails super fast. I also recommend doing homework in a group. Redo the lecture practice problems, homework, and do the practice tests and sometimes OH if needed, you will get an A. I really enjoyed this class!
Ochem is a hard class overall, especially a brief course but I think Helix did a fine job this quarter. His exams are exactly like the practice exams and most of the TAs were helpful. If you can understand his lectures and go through his practice exams, you'll pass. You just have to actually try.
To quote a fellow student. Imagine planning your class and having a final worth 45% of your students grade with no key and no regrades, no partial credit, no curve in the class and having overworked TAs grade 700 exams in a few days thats 8A with Helix. People failed based off of their final alone and the final grading was not standardized.
Dont have much to say other than imagine what your teaching ability must be that your class is able to have 7 pages of notes for their final. To be fair the chemistry department overall is nothing to write home about and Im probably coming across as bitter (which I honestly am). Its just ochem is so important and the teachers seem to not care.
Ochem is always going to produce bitter students, but Helix is an amazing, caring prof. Good lectures, helpful OH, cheat sheets. He made quizzes easier in response to student feedback and lowered the grade cutoffs so an 83 was an A. HW wasn't too bad and he provided practice tests for every quiz and the final. He's way better than any other 8B prof
Helix is really good at lecturing and is always open to answering questions. What I liked the most about him is that he really cares about us and he recognizes his mistakes. If he sees that most people werent able to solve a question on the quiz, hell make it extra credit, for instance. Overall, great prof. Would definitely recommend
Prof Helix is very kind and understanding. If you have something going on in your life he is very accommodating. He made ochem less intimidating to me and never makes someone feel dumb if they have a question. However, Ochem is really hard itself and I ended up not passing the class. I wish there was a curve to help out.
he is not good at explaining concepts. his lecture slides seem nice and organized, but he did not put much info and sometimes he skipped important details. his quizzes are difficult. but he cares students
Lectures TERRIBLE. No details written, only draws molecule and speaks important info aloud which you have to catch yourself and write down otherwise you review lectures and are confused or miss important details. Alright at explaining things, but the lectures are just not it if ochem takes some effort for you to learn
Worst chem professor Ive ever had. Lectures leave out SO much info. Barely gives any practice which is KEY to learn reactions and mechanisms in OChem. Heavily relies on and follows textbook. Canvas is a mess and unorganized. 3 midterms, 1 dropped (wish all 3 were dropped)!
Very nice and caring prof who goes at a reasonable pace. I have Nasiri right now for 8B and she is far from the quality he is. I recommend Helix!
One of my favorite organic chemistry professors, he vows to make learning accessible for people. He made ochem less scary and his class was overall worth it. His quizzes were reasonable too, no surprises. His final was reasonable too.
8A with Helix was incredibly easy. He was new and went into minimal detail. I thought it was great how easy the class was but now I realize he did a terrible job preparing us for the next course. He brushes over concepts in 118B claiming we learnt it in 118A/8A. Idk about 118A but we definitely didn't learn half the stuff he's talking about in 8A.
I truly don't understand what is going on in this class. His canvas is all over the place, his lectures and expectations are unclear. I took 118A with nasiri and was happy to hear she wouldn't teach 118B but I hear her 8B class has a lot of homework and TAs go through them. We get nothing like that with Helix. He just expects us to memorize.
Im retaking 118B with him after taking it with Nasiri and he's a sweet guy who cares about his students but I'm just not understanding anything. No practice problems, and his midterms look nothing like the material in class. At least with Nasiri I recognized some of the questions from her notes even if I didn't understand them...
doesn't matter who I take it with. ochem makes me want to pull my hair out and cry.
I was excited when my friends who had him for 8A talked him up but he's been a letdown. He's a nice guy. I just wish he gave us homework assignments or something because it feels like he's just giving us a lot of information with no real idea or expectation on how he might test us.
8A with Helix was the easiest class I've ever taken at Davis. he taught concepts superficially and was an easy A.
Helix was very helpful, he gave good examples in class and was very clear about what would be on quizzes or not. Just pay attention and you will be fine
Professor Helix is by far the best professor I've had in a long time. Very simple grading - tests and labs. Nothing else to bog you down. Lectures are great and he answers all questions. No trick questions on exam - it's like the practice final. If he finds out a problem was unfair, he makes it EC. No complaints at all. Highly recommended.
From someone who is bad at chemistry, Helix was amazing. He genuinely cares about students. I think his grad school focus was to make learning ochem easier for students. Lectures are clear. Quizzes were not too difficult if you stayed on top of lecture and hw. Final was a little tough, but he adjusted grade cuttoffs. Take him for 8A/B if you can!!
Helix is such an amazing prof! Even though ochem is an insanely difficult subject, he actually explained the reactions in an understandable way. He has clear slides, provides practice tests that are just like the real deal, and is a super gentle and nice person. That said, ochem is still hard and you'd for sure need to study a lot for this class
Helix is an okay prof tbh. His exams weren't insanely difficult and if you studied well, getting a B or an A isn't impossible. Exams were fair and he dropped one midterm score. He enables students to use notecards during midterms and actually listens to his students lol
Helix is a solid choice for ochem. His lectures are good at focusing on the big picture but you need to pay close attention to detail for exams. Graded on 3 exams (lowest dropped) and a final. Lab is the only non-exam based work for your grade. Make sure you do the book problems for practice. Tests are straight forward but graded harshly
I took him for both CHE 8A and 118B, and I would say that ochem is a hard subject regardless, but he was very fair in his expectations. In both classes, the quizzes/midterms were reasonable but the final was far harder, and any test had very little partial credit. If you want to succeed, you should REALLY use the textbook for practice.
New ochem prof but is extremely knowledgable and cares about students. Let us use notecards on exams and drops the lowest midterm out of 3. Office hours were extremely helpful and some were on weekends. Exams were fair and gave bonus points when they were too difficult. Final was a step up in difficulty. Wish he taught 118C
He’s very caring and makes himself accessible during office hours on weekends before exams. There are 3 midterms similar in difficulty as practice midterms. He drops lowest midterm. Lectures are mainly examples of the reactions rather than defining concepts so it may be hard at first to catch patterns in the reactions. Study and you’ll be fine
Idk why the negative reviews say the exams are not similar to the practice exams/lecture material. They were VERY similar to one another. Max is super kind and accessible. Fair exams with notecards for midterm and 1-page for final. Totally possible to fit every mech/rxn on the cheat sheets. If you study his lectures, you have all the info for an A.
Helix is okay, his teaching style didn't work for me personally but I was able to make it work and kept a B+ for pretty much the whole quarter. My one complaint was that the final seemed much more difficult than the rest of the midterms and it ended up dropping my grade to a C+ which was not great. Wish we had more practice other than the textbook
CHE118B is a hard class, but Helix made this impossible class possible. Tons of office hours, clear and organized lectures. The professor and all of his TAs are amazing. Grading are mostly from exams but he dropped the lowest one.
Lectures were ok. Felt like we mainly only learned mechanisms though, didnt feel really in depth in other areas. No homeworks or anything. Gave out some practice during lecture on practice exams. Exams felt fair. Overall helpful and kind prof but will needa rely on self to keep up and do consistent practice.
Very accessible outside of class! He gives out study lists with what is fair game on the midterm and finals, which simplifies your studying a lot. As long as you keep up with the textbook practice + use AATC worksheets you'll do great! His practice exams also line up very well with testing expectations
Of all the ochem professors, easily one of the best. Very clear and wants everyone to be successful. Very lenient and easy to contact. Final was pretty hard but he gave us a fair amount of points back, plus gave us 10 points extra for any possible errors in grading since there wasn't much time to submit regrades.
Not always the best at communicating things to the class but the lectures were very thorough and addressed the important material well. The tests weren't overly difficult too. He didn't curve but did lower the grade cutoffs so that you could still pass with less than a 60%. Overall a solid professor that made the class manageable.
Ochem is difficult as it is, that part's not necessarily on the professor. But he didn't try to complicate things, was clear when teaching mechanisms. Most importantly, spectra problems on exams weren't insanely difficult. He allowed notecards, 3x5 front and back on exams and a full sheet of paper front and back on the final.
Lectures are vague and include the bare minimum of information. Educational quality of this course was poor. Synthesis was reasonable on exams, definitely easier than that of Prof. Lievens. Little to no practice provided by the professor. I really wish Lievens taught 118B so we could get super long sheets of non-stop reaction and synthesis practice
Not really a good professor. Lectures were vague and he would just go through mechanisms really fast. Also didn't assign homework, so we couldn't practice as much. Tests were difficult and kept having NMR and spec, despite barely discussing it in class. Find a good TA and go to the AATC because you won't learn much from him.
This was his first time teaching chem 2c and he did a pretty good job. He was always willing to answer questions and was super nice and considerate with his office hours. He was also able to admit when concepts were hard which was nice to hear from a professor. Also, his exams were fair and he gave a big curb. Overall a really nice guy
Professor Helix had great lectures and gave clear instructions for the expectancy of his students. He went over practice problems and gave practice exams before every exam. He asks students if there are any questions during the lecture and although CHE2C is one of the easier chem classes, I believe Helix did great teaching it for the first time.
Professor Helix is very knowledgable about the topics he teaches, but his lecture style is very cut and dry; lecture, memorize, exam. There is no homework or external assignments to practice, just the practice problems in the text book. Overall, he was very gracious with his grade cut offs but I don't feel as if I learned much from the class.
Great professor! He goes step by step for all reactions and mechanisms, which means you should understand and memorize them. You get to have notecards for the midterms and finals, however. 3 Midterms, fair but little difficult. The same for the final. He did a good curve though. Do the PRACTICE EXAMS, they are VERY similar to actual tests.
Clear and straightforward lectures for each reaction and mechanism. Practice problems from textbook somewhat helped. If only I wasn't that bad in ochem I would've gotten a better grade, a good TA and AATC go a long way
A good Professor, clear lectures and responds to doubts clearly
Helix was very caring and accommodating, I felt bad for him because he did have his sick days but nonetheless still delivered lecture videos for his students. He had a rough quarter this Fall, but he handled it like a champ. As for the class, make sure to put the time and effort into studying and you'll get an A. Not the most difficult class.
Very good practice exams and study guides. Homework is very fair as well. My only gripe is that sometimes he can be confusing about certain concepts or mechanisms. Make sure you really try to follow his train of thought.
If you put in the work, this class will become very manageable. At the beginning of the quarter I was getting 68% on the quizzes and by the end I was getting 94% Things I did to succeed in order of importance: AATC tutoring & workshops, GO TO HIS OH! Get AHEAD on HW before hearing it in class, review ALL lectures. He is AMAZING and So kind, loved!
Easiest chem class ive taken at UCD so far. Helix makes his quizzes very fair and even gives back points for questions he thinks may have been to hard. No midterms, only quizzes and the final.
Lectures are good and clear. Homework is due every other week and is time-consuming. Instead of midterms, there are five quizzes. They can be difficult, but the lowest one is dropped. He sometimes allows notecards.
His lectures are super clear, and are very similar to the quizzes he gives out. He goes over lots of examples and the practice exams are very helpful. Allowed notecards during the later part of the course for quizzes and final. Definitely take him!
Makes lectures very comprehensible. 8A was still pretty hard due to how much is packed into two lectures/week. The overall grade was curved, the material can be difficult but Helix will answer your questions and cares about his students.
Maybe it's the trauma from all the bad 118A professors, but Helix taught this course very well compared to the others. Obviously, ochem will always be hard, but he tries his best to help students succeed. You get a 3x5 note card on each midterm, the lowest midterm is dropped, and you get a full sheet of paper for the final.
Dr. Helix is an amazing professor. Ochem is a very hard subject but he makes it so much easier by clearly going through every mechanism and specifically telling us what we need to know for the exams. He seems to genuinely care about every student's success, and he is also just a very nice guy.
after the war that was 118A helix was a breath of fresh air. very fair on his exams and does his best to make sure his students succeed. super detailed on his explanations. the last few lectures felt very rushed and the time could've been budgeted better. the ptsd from 118A definitely stressed me out there but helixs final was better than expected
Dr. Helix healed some of my trauma from Nasiri's 118a class. He's very sweet and eager to answer questions in class. He thoroughly explains mechanisms and goes into detail of how it works, emphasizing things we should know. Practice exams are similar to his actual exams (3), also drops your lowest exam score. I'm happy I get to take him for 118c!
3 midterms and the lowest one gets dropped, which means 2 counts towards 50% of the grade. As a lecturer, he is clear and clearly states what may or may not be on the test, which is very helpful. Handwriting is neat and classes are organized. The time you spend going over materials positively correlates to your grade.
Dr. Helix is very understanding, communicative, helpful, and amazing at teaching. But, his curve is not as gracious as other professors. 3 MT (1 dropped), final, and lab grade. My scores: MT1 77% (avg 61), MT3 94% (avg 72), Final 90% (avg 66), Lab 100% (avg 95.6). Ended with 89.5% (A-). Still, a very very great and fair professor. Do take!
Likely the best Ochem professor at Davis, but he still grades pretty tough. It's hard to complain when he allows a notecard on exams, but just be aware of that. Any minor steps missed in synthesis and you can kiss 2-3 pts goodbye. Explanation/vocab questions are worth 4 pts and add up when it's your weak spot. You can't have weak spots in Ochem
Helix's lectures are fairly good, and his practice exams are very similar to the actual exams. Allows notes on the midterms and final, which was really helpful. Like others have said, his grade boundaries are fairly high compared to other professors, but his fair exams make-up for that. AATC resources are also very helpful for this class.
Pros: understanding and accessible, clear expectations, great lecturer, plenty of study resources, notes allowed on all exams, lowest midterm dropped, has a cat. Cons: it's ochem. Definitely the best professor you can get for chem. If Helix has 100 fans I'm 1 of them. If Helix has 1 fan it's me. If Helix has no fans I'm no longer on this earth.
Professor Helix has very clear lectures, making the material pretty (relatively) easy to understand, especially for an organic chemistry class. The exams are very fair, the structure is very similar to the practice exams he provides. He is very open to feedback about the class, and is very easy to contact outside of class.
Best professor for the 118 series. Much better than Lievens or Beal (and ofc Nasiri) because he explains things well and actually describes the mechanisms and what is happening. Lievens did have more practice problems and more assignments to help your grade but Helix drops the lowest midterm of 3 so take that as you will.
I think Helix is definitely the best choice out of all the ochem professors. You get to drop 1 midterm out of 3, and none of the tests were super unreasonable or anything. Lectures were pretty clear and he was great with clarifying concepts. However, it doesn't change the fact that the subject is difficult, so still be prepared to study hard.
Ochem sucks but Helix makes it tolerable. His lecture slides are nicely organized and I feel like the class is fair given how harsh ochem can be. He's really sweet and adorable- if you don't do well its kind of on you.
I had professor helix for 118B and 118C, and his lectures were very clear and organized. Most of his exams were fair and not extremely difficult. The only bad thing was that for 118C, he didn't post practice exams for some of the midterms.
I had helix for 118B and now 118C. He was great in both and actually writes notes during lectures unlike other chem professors. The downside to 118C was that he didnt have any practice material for exams since it was his first time teaching that part, he still tried his absolute best and was very great with lecture. Just wish practice was available
Professor Helix is one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are very clear and organized. 3 midterms and one gets dropped, all the content you need to know is in the lectures no need to read the textbook in my opinion.
Probably the best option in terms of ochem professors. Soooo much better than Nasiri, that I will say. Grades really fairly on midterms and drops the lowest one. Obviously, ochem will suck and will be tough no matter what but at least you'll want to take it with a good professor.
Helix is a great professor. He clearly lays out expectations and what we need to know on the exams. The only downside is that we sometimes don't get enough practice problems to study, so be sure to use AATC resources.
Helix's lectures are really organized and clear. It's clear that he cares about supporting students, as he has 5 office hours per week (including during zoom office hours on sundays), and is incredibly responsive online. He makes organic chemistry, a tough topic, as easy as it can possibly get. If you have the choice, do take Helix, he is the best!
Dr. Helix is wonderful. I had him for 118B and 118C. His lectures are straightforward, and his study guides tell you everything you need to know for exams. His exams are also really fair. 118C labs are more fun than 118B, and have easier post-labs. I 100% recommend Helix for any chemistry course.
No doubt he is the best ochem prof at Davis. I had him for 118b/c, and he made a difficult subject very approachable and straightforward. His lectures are easy to follow, and his practice exams are very similar to actual exams. Very fair and caring guy. Labs are easier than gen chem. Watch lectures, do practice exams, and you will do great!
helix is an exceptional prof, clear guidelines for exams and communicates a ton about what he expects and his grading criteria. lectures are clear, concise, and organized. labs are SUPER easy and simple, but for exams make sure to practice a lot. all of the necessary resources are available, so use them!! easily the best ochem prof at davis :))
Man I loved Helix! Unlike Lievens, who made 8b feel like we were taking 118a, Helix actually made 8a feel like we were taking a 2 unit class. He was always responsive and kind. Bless his heart. Hope Lievens can learn a thing or two from him.
Nice guy but not enough in class examples. Class average for exams were Around a D
It is clear Helix knows what he is talking about, but he does not teach well. He does not explain things very well at all and just seems to expect us to know what he is talking about. He does some examples in class but does not explain how to approach the problems, instead he just does them quickly and moves on.
Best STEM professor i've had by far
Overall he was a good professor. Sometimes he would lecture a little too slow and we would fall behind and he wouldn't cover some material but his test are not too hard. If you watch the lectures and do some practice problems you could easily get above a B-. Nice guy. 3 midterms, 1 gets dropped, 1 final. about 5-6 homeworks. not too bad.
His lectures are very clear. Homework is usually pretty long. But best oChem teacher I have had
One of the best and better professors of ochem out there. His lectures are very organized, and clear. Exams are pretty fair and so is his grading. Would recommend taking him over any other professor!! Overall a great professor!!
I loved Dr. Helix! He was an amazing professor, and it was very clear what he expected from his students. This class is very difficult just because it is organic chemistry, but Helix makes it very bearable. He has lots of office hours and it is very apparent he cares about his students. Most of grade is exams but he drops lowest midterm. 10/10
He's a concise lecturer and shows lots of example problems in class. In my opinion, getting an A is very attainable if you do the essential textbook reading and questions, review his in-class examples, and do his practice quizzes. His grading bins are pretty generous, and the average scores on exams were decent so he didn't curve them.
Had Helix for 118B and 118C. He is very kind and allows notecards on his exams. Pay attention in lecture, do the practice problems, go to the AATC and you'll be fine. One note: try not to rely on the notecard too much. Helix won't try to teach you so take the time to really understand the material.
Good professor with helpful lectures. Very accessible outside of class. Good class structure with 3 midterms (65% weight), 6 homeworks (15% weight), and a final (35% weight). Grade cutoffs are lowered by a lot so it's not difficult to earn an A if you are active in receiving help on Piazza, through office hours, or the AATC.
Dr. Helix is a good professor, and he lowers the grading where there is a 3% curve initially set. The best word I would use to describe him is fair because he will not curve by an individual basis, but will change the class or an individual's grade if there was incorrect grading. He did not this quarter due to high/normal averages (C to B-.)
Overall I feel like the class wasnt that hard because he taught well. The homework really helps with understanding concepts, so you kinda have to teach yourself some of it. The only issue i had was the fact he refused to round anyone up or lower the grading threshold. the avg for the final was a D+ and he still didnt curve anything so that sucked
Helix is so nice! Always responds to emails, gave me back points TA wouldn't etc. But he does take a long time to get through content and spends too much time answering questions. He gave fair tests but they are only out of like 50 points so every point off is detrimental, and there was barely a curve which I think is unfair. Super nice guy though
Helix is a good prof. His lectures are recorded and posted on Canvas. Does not curve his midterms, but does curve the overall percentage of his class (I had an 84% but got a B+). Allows notecards for some exams. Sometimes would not finish lecture due to answering questions. Orgo is always going to be hard, but Helix does his best to help students.
He is the best professor at UC Davis hands down. Unlike other STEM professors he teaches well and concisely. He does a generous curve and his practice tests are similar to the midterms. Take him instead of nasiri (save yourself the tears)
Helix is actually the GOAT- the dude's an incredible professor. He actually makes sense, his exam questions are reasonable and fair, which i have never experienced in any chem I've taken in davis. He teaches only what you need to know, his practice exams are really similar to his actual exams, and he's such a fair guy it's not even funny. TAKE HIM.
Very clear on what he wants us to know. He is very open to questions and helping students. I did very well on all midterms and final based on studying his lecture material so if you put the effort in attending you'll do fine. He drops one midterm and one homework assignment- sometimes the homework is long though.
lectures are clear. provides practice exams that are similar to the actual exam. online homeworks were annoying tho. I found this class pretty easy. his lecture slides are clear and he has office hours and TA led midterm/final reviews
Super great lecturer, explained the topics thoroughly with examples and clear notes. Tests were VERY similar to the practice quizzes. Only wish was that lectures were longer or discussion was offered, bc we got behind on the course and had to watch extra videos to catch up before the final. Overall amazing professor, HIGHLY recommend.
Helix was great and I would take him again. Beware Ochem series uses a new homework website that takes off points with every incorrect guess. Tests were EXACTLY like the practice tests he posts and pretty easy. Nice guy sometimes boring lectures but that just because of the subject. I would take!
Very straightforward as a professor. His lectures are palpable but sometimes it can get a bit boring. Work FAST on exams, you only get 40 minutes and you're basically doing 3 of his practice exams at once. Its Ochem so its gonna be hard but hey its better than Nasiri.
Miss you Dr. Helix! Currently have Nasiri, and I cry everyday. Best OCHEM Prof @UCD. Even if you struggle in chem like me, you will pass with a great grade no problemo. Literally would get behind in my schedule to take his class. Very clear rubric, very generous curve. Love this man, he is so sweet and cares about his students. #GOAT
AMAZING PROFESSOR. very clear grading criteria and the practice exams were very similar to what the tests looked like. If you pay attention in lecture and go off of the slides (treat his lecture recordings like the bible), you can DEFINITELYY succeed in the class.
This professor is hands down the best professor in ochem department at UC Davis. Absolute gem. Practice quizzes very similar to midterm exams, clear lectures, and super sweet and approachable on ANY question you may have. lots of partial credits on exams. Generous curves. Sunday OH hours which are SUPER helpful. Has cats he shows in OH on zoom :))
Goes at a comfortable pace for lectures but it's still necessary to review the slides afterwards. Very approachable for questions. His tests are very fair and straightforward and he won't test you on things that he doesn't get to in class or things that he says he won't test on. For us, he allowed an index card-sized cheat sheet for each midterm.
Lectures are recorded, which is helpful because the rate of lectures are very slow. Prof. Helix is quite lenient but I felt that his lectures lack good examples. For Ochem I think more in-depth explanations are better. Tests are easy if you study but you will have to self motivate and study on your own, there's no homework.
Overall a good professor. His lectures are clear and concise, and he tells you exactly what you need to study for his exams. My only issue with him is that he talks so so so so so so so so so so so slow.
Loved Helix, his lectures were very clear tho he moved pretty slowly at times. The final was somewhat difficult but fair.
o-chem is generally a v difficult subject but helix is a very fair prof and makes it rly approachable! lectures were organized and straightforward, + he's very fair with quizzes/exams, just make sure to do the practices because they're always pretty similar. he also allowed a half sheet on the final. take him if you can, i rly enjoyed his class!!
Dr. Helix is nice but fell behind on the material and got disorganized. His midterms were fair and matched the practice well. But, his final was very unfair. Bc he fell behind, he had to rush thru 30 new reactions and their mechanisms in one week. Surprise! Most of the exam was on the new material. Wish he just gave us 10 reactions to focus on.
Helix is a great professor, and I would argue the best for ochem at Davis. He does go slow at times, but I liked it much better than Lievens who went way too fast for me to pay attention in class. Although the final was harder than any of the midterms, it was graded very leniently which I appreciated. Highly recommend.
He goes pretty slow during lectures, but understandable. The only ochem professor I wouldn't mind taking over several times. Midterms are similar to practice & you get a cheat notecard. The final was EXTREMELY difficult because he tried to squeeze in a lot of chapters in 2 weeks. Other than that, explains & teaches VERY excellent.
GOAT! By far the best ochem professor at Davis. Helix is the sweetest professor and you can tell he cares a lot about his students. Lectures are very easy to follow and the tests reflect exactly what we learned in lecture. No surprises. Ochem is a hard subject and the lab portion of the class is a pain, but Helix makes it a lot more bearable.
Dr. Helix really is an amazing Ochem professor. His lectures are quite easy to follow along with since he annotates lecture slides in lecture, and he is extremely accessible outside of class during office hours. The midterms (3 total) do get more difficult conceptually as the course goes on, but you get a notecard for each one and you can drop one.
Prof Helix was AMAZING!! As someone who got a C in gen chem and got an A in this class, the material was SO STRAIGHTFORWARD. Prof Helix has so many office hours times available... GO TO THEM they seriously help with exam prep. Go find the shared Google Drive for practice problems (not the aatc one) because there are so many problems to study :)
The professor teaches all the material in a clear and concise way. Lectures are informative but have few examples and are not very interesting. Labs and exams and straightforward and fair. Be sure to do practice problems outside class.
Helix is an amazing professor. He prepares students for his exams well. His practice exams are formatted exactly as the real exams.
Difficult class but Helix made the exams very similar to the practice ones and graded/curved fairly. Forever regretful I couldn't take him for 8B.
Simple, straightforward professor. If you study, you can get an A w/ Dr. Helix since exams are like practice (sometimes easier) and are based 100% on lecture. I'd beware of TAs as some are VERY nitpicky in labs and some are amazing and try their best to give the best lab grades they can.
If you have to take ochem, take it with Helix! Had him for 118B+C, and his flashcards are the only reason why I did well (as someone who hates chemistry). He has OH every day (even some weekends), and you're guaranteed a B or higher if you just copy his reactions from lecture onto your flashcards. The most fair exams, and the only good OChem prof!
Ochem is not an easy subject, but Dr. Helix made it easy to do well if you put the effort in. His exams are fair and follow the material covered in lectures. He allows notecards on exams, which were extremely helpful. He explained the material very clearly, was always open to questions, and was extremely accessible outside of class.
Helix cares that his students learn and provides plenty of practice problems in class. He is really good about his timing and is very generous about how much time he allows for asking/answering questions. Ochem is rough so you'll have to put in the work but he makes learning a lot easier. Choose him if you can!
Professor Helix is great at making organic chemistry more manageable. Lectures can be slow but understandable. Midterms are fair, but the final can be challenging. unstuck study was super helpful for exam prep. Overall, a worthwhile class if you put in the work.
do the textbook practice, review slides, and you will get an A. spent around 1-3 hours daily on it.
Helix teaches well. Midterms always had a few curveball questions that required you to stretch your understanding to answer a problem type that hasn't been covered in lecture. Final was straightforward, though.
Helix is a great prof. Wait to take ochem with him if you can
Professor Helix is a great professor. The material is hard but he makes it manageable by giving us practice exams that are similar to the actual exams. Get ready to study though cuz this class ain't curved.
Helix is an excellent chem professor. There's one homework assignment every 2-3 weeks, which are all fairly easy to do. 3 midterms, all similar to the practice exams he gives, and the final is also similar to his practice final. No issues with him as a professor, chem is just a difficult subject but he makes it feel easy.
Helix is a good teacher. Ochem is just hard in nature but his exams are very fair. The only think was the TAs are not very lenient on partial credit on exams. Overall, the class is doable. There is no "curve" but he does have cutoffs, I got a 75% final grade which curved to a B-.
Prof loves chem and it shows. He and 7 TA's all had office hours at different times to accommodate any schedule, the lowest midterm out of 3 is dropped, and all final grades are automatically curved up. The exams are hard, I found myself struggling on test questions even after studying + finding the example problems easy. But overall a great class.
Made the transition from the CHE 2 series very easy. Generally made more difficult concepts very easy to understand. Exams were similar to practices and were very straightforward. Records lectures, posts notes, and also spends a fair amount of time in class doing examples and practice problems.
Very understanding professor overall. He recorded lectures and gave study guides that listed all of the mechanisms/concepts we needed to know for exams. Only complaint was with the lab portion- I found the grading criteria to be somewhat unclear at times, but I'm sure that depends more on your TA.
Professor Helix does a great job at explaining his lectures in a clear manner and is always open for questions. His lectures contain lots of practice problems like the ones on exams and he gives practice exams very similar to his tests so there's not really any curveballs. He also allows a notecard for midterms which is nice.
Professor started off very strong. Second half of the quarter better off watching youtube videos to learn.
Helix was a wonderful and caring professor. His exams are extremely fair, I'd highly recommend writing your own study guide based off of the lecture slides, and fully understand EVERYTHING. Go to office hours, and really take advantage of your notecard. If you do that, you'll perform very well in the course!
Helix is pookie as always. Lectures are very important and helpful, and he is good at explaining, ochem is just hard. His practice exams were very helpful and he gave lots of pity points on exams.
O chem is hard but he is an amazing instructor. Classes are not mandatory but I would highly recommend going. He explains o chem very well and his practice tests are very similar and the exact same lay out as his midterms. 3 midterms but drops one! Loved him wish I could take again.
Amazing Professor literally taught me everything so clearly, I feel like I've retained all the information taught in this class completely, and he really taught us how to apply out knowledge.
I love this professor! He lowered cut offs, gave points back and was super easy to talk to outside of class. It's Ochem so it's always gonna be hard, but he gives you tools to succeed. Study often, do practice questions and you'll be okay. He cares for his students and is always willing to accommodate in my opinion.
Good lectures and gives practice through homework, practice problems. Go to tutors and TAs as well. Feel free to ask him any questions you have. It seems like he really wants to help everyone understand and pass this class. O-Chem is scary and hard but you got this!! I do recommend this teacher and don't fall behind on studying!
the goat. deserves everything good in life. he is one of one. exams are the perfect balance of challenging and reasonable. not a single thing to complain about.
Very straightforward professor. Lectures are a bit dry, but he usually does a good job telling you what you need to know. Also ensures that there are plenty of office hours.
i was lwk scared coming into this class just cuz my foundation wasn't good, but Helix explains the concepts and mechs really clearly and provides good practice probs. He has a lot of office hours, exams are incredibly fair, and grade cutoffs are lower + there are sometimes bonus points on MTs. You can tell he really cares about students succeeding.
Helix is awesome. I got a 73 on the first midterm and still ended up with an A in the class because he dropped it, and the midterms/final are very doable and formatted exactly like the practices. Watch his lectures, watch the AATC reviews on the 118B folder, do the practice exams/LA practice sets, & put effort into the notecard. You will get an A.
helix really cares about his students, 3 midterms lowest dropped, ipad handwritten notecards allowed, gave bonus points for more difficult questions and lowered cutoffs (89 was solid A). do the practice exams, LA practice, txtbk questions, and go to office hours and you'll be fine!
Dr. Helix is the best! Really wants you to succeed (has office hours 5 days of the week). Clear on what he needs us to know. Practice exams are super similar to actual exams and grading is very fair (will give bonus points if people don't do good on certain questions). Very nice professor that allows a notecard for each midterm. Highly recommend!
Just lock tf in for the midterms. I wish I took them more seriously because its pretty easy to do well on them if you put in the time. Also you do get one midterm drop, but don't get complacent, just try to do as well as you can on everything that you put out.
Fairly grades his classes. If you take the time to properly memorize the reactions needed for each exam (which is told to you in the study guide) or write it all down on your notecard you're almost guaranteed to pass. Organic Chemistry is always going to be hard no matter who teaches it but he makes it much more approachable and fair.
He an alright professor very very monotoned lectures but honestly his practice exams and similar to his actual midterms. The final was tough but overall chill class
very sweet and nonthreatening man. really likes his chemicals. you're in good hands
Ochem is a tough subject, but Professor Helix does his best to make the subject manageable (including GENEROUS curving). Points are based off of online homework (15%), 2 midterms [50% (3 given/1 dropped -> 25%/each)] and the final (35%). Would definitely take him again if given the chance.
One of the better ochem profs. Preset curve, but can change based on the avgs for midterms/final. He gives a study list for each exam and will not include anything that is not on the list. Makes it very clear what is expected on the exam. Practice exams's format IDENTICAL to the real one (obviously all different questions). Exam Q's can be tricky!
I loved Dr. Helix! His office hours are super helpful and he is always very responsive on piazza and is always open to answering student questions. Midterms aren't too hard and 1 gets dropped. He has very clear expectations and will never trick you. I had a great experience in his class for 118B and 118C and I wish he taught other classes.
Best ochem prof, he is so nice. His tests are very fair bc he tells you exactly what is going to be on them and gives multiple practice exams that are similar to the actual exam. Ochem is hard regardless but it was def less painful with him as the prof
oh my glorious king
had helix for 118b&c and would highly recommend! 3 midterms (1 dropped) 1 final, notecard is super helpful (use an iPad if you have one). has office hours almost everyday. our midterms were a bit tricky but the final was super straightforward and gives bonus pts. 90% (minimum) and up is an A!
Goat. Crammed all the lecture content two nights before each exam. Still finished with a 95 because he doesn't try to trick you. As long as you fully understand the practice exams and lock in a bit, you're fine. I hated gen chem and did so bad, thought I'd bomb ochem, but he actually made me enjoy it. If I can do it, trust.
I took 118B and 118C wit Dr. Helix and I would highly recommend taking any class with him if you can. No homework, graded on 3 midterms (1 dropped), lab, and final. Exams were fair and a notecard was allowed. While organic chemistry was not my strong suit, I Dr. Helix makes the class doable if you put in just a little effort.
Had Helix for 118b + c, great prof for both. Super approachable, patient, explains things well, go to his office hours! Piazza helpful too. Three midterms (drop one) and cumulative final. Gave us a mech on a mt he said he wouldn't test us on, realized after, understanding when grading + gave bonus points. Curves overall grade. Made ochem better fs
The midterm was much harder than both practice tests. Even after reviewing tough homework and doing well on the practice exams, the real test felt on another level. What I really don't like is that there's no huge curve at the end of class like other o-chem classes. There are only lower grade cutoffs, which is standard in most o-chem classes.
Teaching is great! Very nice in office hour
No matter how much you study and do the practice, the exams are unfairly more difficult and there was almost no curve. He has office hours, but he talks to you like youre stupid and its obvious what youre asking him. DO NOT take this class unless you want to put your whole life into a 2 unit course. Took a serious toll on my mental health.
It is so hard
Lectures are hard to sit through but practice tests and study materials are awesome, one midterm gets dropped which was nice aswell. Overall a pretty understanding professor, would probably take again if I had to.
Honestly, bless this man. His lectures were a little confusing but that's expected from o-chem. He was a pretty smooth transition from gen chem to o-chem. He is very helpful during lecture and is willing to answer every question. His tests are really fair and are based on the practices he gives. The homework is kinda long and hard to figure out tho
Honestly rly chill guy, I only attended lec during the first day and took this class purely watching videos but still scored a bit higher than the average. Tests are exactly like practice and fair, tho mistakes are confusing. Beware the hw deducts pts for every wrong attempt unlike owl in gen chem. His lecs can be confusing, might need tutoring.
lectures were a little confusing and we got really far behind so had to watch a lot of supplemental lectures. ochem is just hard, but he made it semi bearable. exams are exactly like practice tests and got a half sheet of paper for the final.
Lectures were okay, explained it best he could but could do with more examples/practice problems outside of class. Homework is graded on correctness. Exams almost exactly like practice exams, which is very nice! Also allows for a note card on midterms and half-sheet on final. Ochem is difficult but Helix makes it bearable!
Dr. Helix.... I will miss you and look for you in every life time, he's amazing
Honestly the best chem professor I've taken. His lectures were super helpful in understanding concepts and he did a good amount of practice. His exams were pretty fair too considering the amount of resources we got with the LAs and the official practice exam. I would definitely recommend him!
Lots of homework, and each time you get an attempt wrong it takes a % off the complete homework score. Practice tests very similar to actual tests- 3 midterms, 1 drop. Didn't have time to cover some things in class, so we had to watch videos posted. Did not feel like 2 units, but overall good experience, much better than gen-chem imo.
Very caring and straight forward professor, lectures only got a little bit confusing near the end. The study materials are exactly like the tests and they all felt very fair. If you study well you can succeed. Weekly HW, 3 MTs, 1 final. Lowest MT and HW dropped. Not curved, but he's very understanding and slightly lowers the final grade cutoffs.
He is very nice and lectures are well organized, but I dont think he gives enough out of class materials to aid in studying. A pretty hard class considering it is Ochem so don't be fooled by the "easier" course description but he is very fair, drops lowest midterm and homework, and adjusts grade curve. If ur not good at tests, take at a cc.
He was such an amazing professor for organic. We did fall behind in lecture, so there were a lot of videos we had to watch outside of class to catch up. Curve is fair, and we had 3 midterms plus the final, and lowest midterm grade got dropped. We had 6 homework assignments, but lowest grade also got dropped as well. All in all great class!
Sensational, superb, and sublime! He TEACHES the content and everything on tests was taught in lecture, although the homework was def too hard compared to his content. He even showed his cats.
Chill guy, reasonable test.
Helix explains most things clearly, but the concepts are very difficult. 3 midterms and lowest is dropped, but the exams are more difficult than practice tests. 6 HW assignments that are often confusing. Allowed a notes sheet for the final, and grade boundaries are low. Good prof but prepare to study, apply yourself, and work hard for your grade.
I LOVE MAX HELIX AND HIS ADORABLE CATS. He is very understanding and straightforward. He would often answer questions in class. His exams were super fair and he gave a lot of study materials. There is not much of a curve in his class typically but he drops one midterm. 3 MT, 1 Final, Lowest HW dropped.
Great guy, very straightforward lectures. Its just ochem, and ochem is a rough subject to get through.
