He is the best professor I ever had at SMC; His lectures are organized and he is witty and smart.
Prof. Kent is well organized and care about students; sometimes, he could be demanding but his lectures are always thoughtful and well prepared. I definitely recommend his students to serious students.
Initially, I did not expected from this professor. But his committment and quality of lectures are superb. Class discussion is highly stimulating and provocative.
The teacher is one cool dude! I was not interested in the subject first; but now I love every minute of his class. He really how to engage people and most students love him.
This class was an o.k. class. Powerpoints were not really helpful. He just told you the guidelines on what to study. Get the textbook! You will need it because powerpoints are pointless. One amandatory midterm and one required final
This is an ok class. I would not recommend him as a teacher. Attendance is not mandatory because all of his powerpoints are online. I would recommend taking the midterm, even though it is not required and then of course the final. But get the textbook, because the powerpoints are not that helpful. i thought that they were really unclear.
A fantastic teacher. His lectures were intellectually stimulating; and he does care about his students unlike most teachers at SMC. I definitely recommend hin as tteacher.
Bad, bad, bad!! Does not use grade system, only checkmarks. Does not answer your questions fully. Always says that he is there to make money, not because he loves teaching. His accent makes it really hard to understand. Also, he never seems to notice raised hands. I would not recommend him.
Prof. Kent makes history alive. It makes history one of most interesting topics I ever studied in my life.
His lectures were little dull, but they are usually organized and clear. Sometimes, he expects little too much from his students
Thought this class would be boring but it actually turned out pretty good. His accent's not bad, I don't agree with the user below. Gives plenty of time to prepare for tests and x-cred. Some of the students were really obnoxious, and took advantage of how laid back he is. Doesn't take attendance...I'd get the book though for exams/paper.
funny guy...don't take the class if youre gonna fall asleep cuz then he'll talk**** about you and he'll be in the bad mood for the rest of the day...ask him about the student that fell asleep in class like everyday spring '09 semester =P
Max Kent is one of the most easiest and straightforward prof in SMC. Very laid back, refreshing with his lectures and loves to blend everything with economic issues. There is 1 optional midterm, and 1 required final. midterm and final count as 50% each or final is 100%. There is 1 extra credit paper too. Totally recommended, take him and A is yours
If you are into history it's actually quite an interesting class. His powerpoints are more like an outline than informative but if you listen to what he says it's like being told a story. The class goes by fast. If you think you are going to cheat your way through, I wouldn't dare. He has eyes on every side of his head. He's a F ing hawk.
This Teacher is easy! I took him over the summer and went to class a total of 4 times and got an A!
easy easy easy, took him over the summer attendance was not mandetory, he let us out @least 20 mins early and tests gives you easy guidlines gave us extra credit that substiuted for alot. only 1 test and 1 final. soo easy esp if you are a slacker study the final and you will get an A cuz im a slacker and i got an A very easy cool dude
one of the easiest teachers in SMC. He's lectures are very interesting. You will learn that history actually makes a lot of sense when he uses economics to explain it all. Highly recommended. He gets really pissed when he catches ppl using cell phones in class. Stay on his good side.
guaranteed A in this class. optional final where you just define bunch of terms, and the final which is two essays and 4 identifications. really easy, don't need the book.
I took his summer class. He changed, he said it, he said he is not as easy as before and I admitted it. He changed the exam style, if you study hard you will get an A. He answers questions after class. He is stright with attendent and cell phone. He seldom smile but he teaches in a simple way.
Absolute guaranteed A in this class.
super easy..got an A in this class and i never even opened the book...just come to class and take notes and you'll get an A.
everyone gets an A+ in this class. don't worry even if he scares you at first.
Best history teacher! His classes were so much fun, not that he ever cracked a smile..wait he did couple of times. 3 midterms (get to skip one if had an A. Every lecture starts with quiz based on previous lecture. Had to prepare and memorize approx. 10 ID's per midterm and had 3 essay questions to prepare for each test plus 1 book review.
So laid back. Easy A, and learned alot!
Kent is probably the most laidback teacher at SMC. I highly recommend him if you need to have an A for a GE course.
Extremely easy...textbook really isn't necessary. 2 exams and then one final exam. Small quizzes every class session. Kent has a very thick accent but is actually a pretty good lecturer. I learned a lot in his class. If you're looking for a more challenging class, take one with someone else. Kent's class is an easy A.
Such a good professor. Just make sure you go to class EVERY SINGLE DAY, take notes, study whatever he tells you to, and the midterm- final should be a piece of CAKE. Easy easy class if you do everything you're supposed to do. Not a class for lazy people.
Great teacher! He has an accent but is perfectly understandable. Pay attention, take notes, and show up every day. There are daily quizzes that prepare you for the midterm/final format. The paper written during summer session was a breeze, but spring/fall may be more difficult. Teaches history through the perspective of an Economic Historian.
He is well organized, very smart and his class is interesting. Be aware of quizzes, a paper, a midterm and a final, not bad. He is fair and you look forward to his classroom.
I learned a lot in his class. He was very helpful, insightful and has a way of teaching that is different. I took this course over the summer and we had quizzes, a paper, midterm and a final and he only took the 8 highest scores out of 10. Very friendly guy, definitely take his class. You will learn and have fun.. also, he is funny.
With time you'll get used to the Professor. Extremely easy quiz every class meeting. He uses PowerPoints as his lectures (Take notes)- and Read the BOOKS! Final consists of short essays and one big essay. Take him if you excelled in Art History 1 and 2. Super easy 'A'.
Gives a small quiz every class based off of previous lecture or reading so attendance is mandatory. Didn't give any tests with the exception of the final so his class is extremely easy if you take notes and pay attention to his lectures. Really smart and funny guy as long as you don't disrupt class.
Very Very Nice man. Quizes are given daily and are a fun way to study. He genuinely cares about his students, and will give you the benefit of the doubt. My only complaint is that his world civ class was too Eurocentric. If I wanted to learn about Europe I would've taken History 2. Learned little of Africa and S. America. But I know a lot about EU!
he is not as easier as before ! Everyone study ALOT in this class ! He said he will grade harsh than before and he really did ! And be aware if your first language is not English ,he did challenge on your it ! HE is helpful tho and I understand history is always hard .
The majority of the class get a B. He is easy? no. U MUST study very hard to get an A or u are very talent at hist
WEEKLY QUIZ ! FINAL CONSISTS OF 60%! LOTS OF READING
Prof. Kent is one of the best professors I had at SMC. Many cute Swedish girls taking his class.
The class was not easy as I thought, but not that difficult if you study every day. I would not take the course, if you're looking for an easy A without any work.
read and study everyday in order to get an A !!
Not an easy A grader anymore, he definitely is harder than before... Don't take. got a good grade, but still the class was harder than it should of been. Take someone else.
Definitely not an easy class! you have to study very hard to get good grade. International students should avoid this class. Although I get an A but I study very hard.
It's a challenging class--class starts with a short quiz, but I've learned a lot about economic and art history.
Great Professor at SMC . Easy to learn and very enthusiastic.
Horrible lectures. Tests poorly written with meaningless questions. Says what tests will cover, changes it without telling you & then blames students for poor performance. He displays everyone's grades for all to see.Always saying"let's see who the A students are".We only got to 1945 due to source material readings & La Mettrie book. NOT RECOMMENDED!
A lot of homework and tests; but I've learned to like his method of teaching. I've learned a lot from class.
Very organized. I wish all the teachers were like that.
There is a quiz everyday, a midterm, final, and two short papers. The best tip I can give is keep up with the chapters and remember dates his tests are factual. Overall I suggest you take this as a last resort
It's an easy course. Do some work and you will get an A. Taking Quizzes is optional.
One of easiest and entertaining course I've taken at SMC. Too bad he is not teaching other courses.
Without a doubt Prof. Kent is one of the best instructors at SMC. Although there is a quiz for every class, you will do well if you're prepared. He seems to be really dedicated to teaching and most of all care about his students. I really learned a lot from his class.
Extremely easy as long as you pay attention. Eight week format that I attended was fairly straight forward but the 3 hour classes were a bit long. Gives a lot of extra credit and nabbing an A is really simple as long as you put some effort into it.
I've really enjoyed taking his course. He really make history come alive and interesting.
He is very funny and mainly teaches from powerpoints and youtube documentaries. We took a quiz every day, 2 papers, and final. The midterm was just another daily quiz. He gives heads up on what going to the on the quiz. Lectures are 3 hours long, he lets students leave after the first break but he usually gave out quiz hints after the break.
Great Class! Pretty entertaining and easy grade. Getting an A is almost guaranteed. Check out the grade distribution at SMC. Enter "Grade Distribution" in "Search SMC."
I am a Bio major so I have a very extensive course load. This class is very easy as long as you take notes and show up to class. There is a quiz every class but he drops the 3 lowest scores. There are two tests and most the questions are from the quizzes which are based off lecture. He is hard to understand, but the class is self explanatory
Great Class! Pretty entertaining and easy grade. Getting an A is almost guaranteed. Check out the grade distribution at SMC. Enter "Grade Distribution" in "Search SMC."
Super easy class, Easy 5 point quizzes everyday with a bunch of extra credit opportunities. You honestly have to try really hard not to get an A, just do the minimal amount of work assigned and you'll be fine.
Highly recommend this class. Assigns a decent amount of reading. Gives lots of extra credit. Quiz everyday, but they are easy and manageable. He's pretty funny
Professor Kent is amazing. Although the lectures were 2 hours long - since it was a 12 week class - he was clear on his points, and his accent along with his jokes make things humorous. For the most part, I score above 95 for all of his tests, and he asked me to stop working so hard. That being said, just work a little & I am sure A is possible.
Professor Kent is a wonderful teacher that truly cares for his students. Highly recommend him.
Easiest class you will ever take. Don't even need a brain to get an A!!!!
quizzes every class,do not miss class ,take notes and you will be okay
If you like history and actually want to learn the material, this class is a joke. If you want an easy a, take the class. I didn't learn anything new from this class but was able to get an a with literally no effort. It was very much like a high school class and I would not take this prof again.
If you want to get some credit and good grades take his courses. Some work required but most of students earn an A .
This class is almost 100% powerpoint lectures, but sometimes Kent will invite discussion. There is SO MUCH extra credit; Kent practically rains it on you. The exams can have some tricky questions, but usually Kent will allow you to use your notes or consult a textbook. Take good notes! Kent is difficult to understand, so make sure to concentrate.
worst professor ever, if you heard hes an easy a and this is a good class, someone probably took his class before he changed all the material. do not take this class if you want an A
I'm surprised at some of the reviews. Max Kent is an excellent professor and you will learn a lot in his class. If you're not willing to read or go to class, then you're not going to do well, but that goes for all classes. You wont regret taking his class.
This dude has to be the funniest history teacher at smc. Class is super easy. A quiz everyday based on previous lecture. He offers a lot of EC as well so take advantage. Two Midterms and a Final. You only need 1 textbook (Perspectives).
Thick accent; hard to understand. Gives you overview in lecture instead of clarifying details you've read (basically self teach type of class). Moves way fast. Quizzes focuses on name-date convention... Refuses to save you money, 3 physical textbooks + side stuff like index cards. Has in class discussions.
Do yourself a huge favor and TAKE THIS CLASS. If you're just trying to get your GE's out of the way and get an A, Professor Kent is great. He offers several chances for extra credit and his grading is extremely clear. He's a little hard to understand but you can always ask for clarification. Show up, review your notes, and you'll get an A.
It's my 1st year and I took his winter class, it was quite fast and he gave us quizzes almost everyday, but the quizzes weren't so bad as long as you read the lecture notes ( it's not much and easy to remember) and he gives us hints on which notes he'll probably put on the quiz. his accent is bit hard to understand, but I think it's not that bad.
He gives a lot of extra credit and his quizzes are mostly based on the lectures. He also gives points for classroom participation. He allows notes for exams. A witty individual in the context of class but he comes across as being aloof and unsociable outside of the class room setting. An average professor who I wouldn't take again or recommend.
If you are looking to get an easy A for a GE then take this class. I didnt read the textbook at all and barely studied for the quizzes and tests. If you actually want to learn in-depth history, then maybe try a different professor. Hes funny but hard to understand at sometimes.
He's an amazing professor, I really love his lectures. He is gives us lots of hints and points out the important parts of the lectures that would probably come out in his quizzes and exam. overall, as long as you pay attention in class you'll get an A.
He is a really great professor if you show up every day. His class is lecture heavy and there is a quiz every day at the beginning of the class. Participate, do the presentation and study and you will get an A. He is knowledgeable of history and very fast paced so be ready.
Professor Kent is a really cool guy, but his lectures often are super boring (especially if you don't like History) Grading is super straight forward. Daily Quizzes, 3 Exams (1. Open Book, 2. No Notes, 3. Notes). Presentations are extra credit and super easy. Participate to get a few extra points. I had a tough time, because I hate history.
He's an odd guy but really nice and it was a super easy class. Theres a short quiz every class but he drops the lowest 9 and it's word for word out of his lecture from the previous class. He sends out everybody's grades with your names to the whole class, which I thought was odd. You barely have to read except for occasionally skimming source book
Kent is not really like any other professor at SMC. His social wit lacks so at times he may seem rude but I dont posit he means it. Professor Kent is truly a unique mind and has great takes. Overall his lectures are mostly unclear but heavy participation counteracts that nicely. An A is definitely attainable if you show him you care.
Probably the easiest teacher in the history department. You take his class and you will earn an A.
Easy class, everyone I know received A or B. He has made it even easier since I took the class. When I took the class, there was easy 5 question quiz on previous days notes and a extra credit point that was take home, TONS of xtra credit. Attend, get A,B. There is assigned reading, but no one does it. He is hard to understand but its a easy class.
No homework(only readings)three tests throughout the semester. buy 2 books. very hard to understand w accent and the only criteria is through lectures. He does not post the notes. You either show up to class for 3 extra credit points (he puts towards test grade) to get the notes or from a friend. Barely understand anything coming from his mouth.
Takes forever to grade your papers. He also takes forever to post literally anything that is somewhat relevant to the class whether it's papers or even reading assignments.
He is one of best online instructors I have ever taken at SMC.
Unlike other online courses, I really enjoyed his course. Well organized and thoughfully presented.
The class had no zoom meetings, however be warned his class requires you to buy an Access Code. The reason I dropped the class was because of the quizzes. There's like 6 quizzes you have to take every week and no matter how many times I read through the lectures I would always get like a C or D so my grade dropped like 10% every week :( So unfair
It is the best online course I have taken at SMC. The class is well structured and the instructors give easy assignments. IT's almost guranteed to get an A if you do any work.
Taking this class online/at home was extremely challenging. Revel textbook quizzes are challenging. Professor is not especially communicative. If you need the credit and are prepared to do a lot of work yourself with no help from professor or classmates, you'll be able to handle the online course.
I took his summer class on campus; it was an informal, interactive, low-stress environment where you still learned things. Grading was via e-book quizzes and a final essay. There was also EC for attendance and a book review. If you take the class seriously you will probably get an A. Particularly recommended if you don't like traditional lectures.
The easiest online class of my life. You buy the ebook access, do the quizzes and the essay and you're done. I guess I can say thank you to Professor Kent for the textbook and the knowledge within it but I did not specifically feel like he cared or anything.
Instead of taking his SMC courses (which are not easy), take his UCLA Extension courses. Almost no work. All my friends earned As from his UCLA Extension courses with almost no work. Credits are directly transferable to UC and Cal State campuses, as well as many universities nationwide.
Professor Kent was a dream as someone taking the max amount of courses we're allowed to have at SMC! Easy but very educational class your grade relies on doing the achieve coursework that's due every two weeks. If you miss it don't sweat it he'll give you the chance to make it up. Theres also 2 essays but one is optional to replace the first essay
Professor Kent is the best teacher. He explains everything in a way that makes history interesting and understandable, even for people who don't like the subject. He's also very sympathetic and understanding if something comes up. he treats students with respect and patience. If you put in even a little effort, you'll do great in his class.
He's a nice guy, but I don't recommend taking him in person, if you take it do it online. 60% of your grade is exams which originally was essays then he changed them to multiple choice (in person and closed book), the other 40% was homework worth 20% and a 6 page essay also worth 20%, it was stressful because I feel like I never knew what to expect
If you want an easy A take this class but he isn't what i would call a good teacher. His lectures are boring and not meaningful however most of the work is busy work on achieve and if you miss a week you get a chance to do it all at the end of the semester.
Take his UCLA Extension online courses rather than the SMC version. The workload is light, the class size is small, and he provides unusually clear, detailed feedback. He responds quickly to questions and is generous with guidance. He also writes strong recommendation letters — something you rarely get from an online instructor.
