Lets class out 20 min early every day. Extremely easy grader, but a bit unclear and confusing at times.

Can be very confusing. You never seem to know what he expects out of you. Try hard, do your best, and be literate, and you should have no trouble getting a decent grade. (I thought I was going to get a C or a B, and got an A!)
would be EZ 2 crit this guy but the alternative is primarily pompous, pretentious, people who suffer from a lack of experience in the real world. He is open to students viewpoint different from his own and seems to see value in them, but if you write something badly he will critique it accordingly.
He liked to ramble about nothing a lot of the time. There was not that much homework, just four small papers and a few textbook assignments, no final. Sometimes he was funny, but most of the time he was confusing.
Not a bad guy. Make sure you say something if he expects a discussion. Also really enjoys drinking apparently.
Wow, class started out with 45 students on the first day and finished with 15 students hanging in to the end. Enough said. Unfortunate for future students, he is the only instructor for the course.
I liked him a lot, his quizes were always on the notes and pretty straightforward.
He is an over all easy teacher,i recommend his class because he only has 4 papers all with easy subjects.He spends alot of class time literally talking about nothing and there's a lot of awkard silences because he's trying to think of what to conversate with next.Easy to cheat on quizes because you pass the quiz to a person near you for correction
This guy's an IDIOT. He's no help at all, so don't bother asking. Assignments aren't clear at all. Lots of ackward silence as he has no idea how to run a class. Unprepared! You can get by without the book. Also he always goes off on stupid stuff not related to class. If you want laugh, look at his glamor shot photo on his website..
Whoever said they liked this guy a lot is out of their flippn mind. Worst professor I've had at Norm. Doesn't instruct #$@!, always grumpy, no help what so ever, critisizes your writing w/ no construction. AVOID!!!
Quizzes are easy if you take notes. Papers are easy, but the practice essays can be tedious. The computer part of the class is the best. You can leave class as soon as the activities are done (which usually is 10 minutes into the second hour.)
This guy does not know how to teach. You get one chance to get your papers correct. Never explains the assignments. Cannot answer any ?'s that you may have. By far, the worst professor I have ever taken.

horrible professor. Didn't learn much in class. Said I was doing excellent and I should be happy with a B Paper. Couldn't explain to me why I wasn't getting A papers and just kept telling me I should be happy. Avoid at all costs.
Okay guy, but he never really answers questions clearly. Quizes are easy if you have notes, and there's not much work in the textbook. Essays are simple and not too long, but you don't really learn much from them. Not a very interesting teacher, but he's friendly if you talk to him outside of class. Overall, VERY easy class.

Not a good teacher, but easy grader. Everything is out of the book or online. Class time means nothing, but attendance is taken. When I started this class, I wanted to run out screaming for about the first two weeks... I couldn't stand the man. But, after a month or so, his stories and personality grow on you... only to be bareable.
Today, in class, the motion sensor couldn't detect any movement, so the lights shut off. No joke. It was that dull.
He is a tough teacher but he is fair. He is friendly and open to helping students. He is one of the best at Normandale.
Easy class. I slacked and got an A, but he does give frequent quizzes and tells stories with no apparent relevance to the material. He's all about grammar so double check your papers.
4 essays, pretty easy! take down notes b/c he will give unexpected quizzes on them. turn in "notebook" in the end, which is 4 rough draft essays, 3 practice essays, & work from the grammar book. final exam is a paper. he makes you read from riverside reader and discusses it; don't buy if you aren't gonna discuss, it's a waste of money.
Max Smith is from outerspace. I watched him falling asleep during student presentations! He has a total lack of enthusiasm for his profession.

If I were to base my Normandale experience solely on this teacher, I would have transferred already. Smith was a waste of time and money. He was late to class, didn't lecture, and made only subjective comments on homework. He made little attempt to provide constructive criticism on formatting or technical elements. Stay away if you want to learn.

He comes late to class everyday and lets us out early. For a composition class he does nothing to teach us how to write. He spends all of the time on grammar and computer exercises. The notebook he makes us do is busy work. He is not a good teacher and I would NOT take his class. People fall asleep and nobody talks, including him!!

Lot's of quiz's that i thought would pull my grade way down, but I got an A. If you ask he is willing to help and give advice. He cancelled class every monday when he was suposed to hand back papers. He's a good teacher, I learned alot and would recomend him. An added note; he has some interesting shoes.
An all around good guy. Has a lot of interesting things to say. You tend to learn about more than just English in his class. Has a sense of humor. Can be a little intimidating at time with how he looks at you, though, but it's not intentional...or is it? lol.
Max is a tough teacher, but this is college. If you prove to him that you are making a strong effort (by asking questions, showing up to class, etc)he does help. To get a good grade you do have to work but that should be more than expected in a composition class. I learned alot about my writing from him.

Are you people kidding me? This class is a joke. Max doesn't teach anything. Class time is spent on irrelevent discussion and attendance is mandatory. I learned VERY little about English from Max. He's nice, but his class was absolutely mind-numbing.

Max has got to be the WORST teacher at Normandale. Super boring, irrelevant "discussion," learned nothing in the class. As far as papers go, he is a very tough grader. I would love to call him some names but it will get deleted...avoid max at all costs if you would like to avoid dying of boredom. Same goes for Freshman Comp

DON'T take ENGC with him, worst instructor I've had throughout my Normdandale years. You barely learn anything from his class. He's very random, he talks about one topic for the whole hour. He doesn't post up your grades, he expects you to figure it out yourself. He BARELY helps you if you have a questions about your assignment.

He seemed to be a relatively hard grader, and at the end of the semester I did the math, which said I was going to get a C. I got an A, though, so I guess he helps out in the end.

He is a good, organized business writing teacher online. It is really important to keep up on all the assignments because I don't think it is possible to fall behind and still make a good grade. There are sure a lot of documents online but if you read them closely you can figure out how things work.

Dont miss a day of class becasue if u do he doesnt allow you to take any quizes over again. he also doesnt allow u to email any paper they have to be turned in hard copy else he will not accept it.
This is my first online course so I didn't really know what to expect. You really have to keep up with assignments on these things. I still haven't got the e-folio site all figured out, but I do like it as a supplement for the other job stuff. I don't know if I will try another of these online courses or not.

Clear guidelines, follows the textbook, and provides clear feedback. Grades papers quicker than other teachers I've had and grades fairly. I took this as on online 7 week summer class and would recommend the course to anyone wanting to work on resumes, cover letters, online portfolios, and public relations documents. Great Teacher.

If you're looking for an easy A and you can write at a decent high-school level, this class is it. His lectures have nothing to do with writing well, so don't expect to learn anything. He's not very friendly, but he is relaxed. He's a great prof for people who just need to get the class over with but don't actually have to learn anything.

He is a kind of teacher that takes some getting used to. He is a TOUGH grader but if you follow directions all is well. He likes to talk about things off topic. Assignments are few in number, but require much time and effort to complete. Over all good teacher. BTW.. He doesn't use the textbooks enough for how much money they cost.
He was an ok professor... the quizzes he gives are beyond annoying and pointless. He doest actually TEACH you much. I taught myself throughout the semester. He rarely uses the textbooks and is very tough on grading. I really wouldn't recommend him, especially if it's your first college course like it was mine.
If you want an easy A then go for it, but this class will be the most boring one you will ever take and you won't learn a thing. Also, pop quizzes.

Unfortunately, this class is a HUGE waste of time. His lectures *rarely* have a thing to do with English class, and yet you have to attend, or you will lose your credit. If you are looking for a class that is worth your money, DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. His quizes are filled with useless info, and the "notebook" that is due at the end is just annoying
Quizzes are unpredictable and it is mandatory to write a second essay for each essay assigned (10 essays total you will end up writing compared to 4 everywhere else). Buy the New Century Handbook, but anything else don't bother he doesn't use them. And lastly he is a very hard grader, no one in my class got higher than a B+ on any assignment.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. Wastes class time (sometimes whole hour) talking about random stuff. Completely pointless! Mandatory attendance for a class that has taught me nothing.
I took his Freshman Comp. class on M T TH F. He is very unhelpful, and kind of rude at times. Although, If you need to take this class for generals or your major it is really easy. Pay attention, take some notes, and you should be fine as long as you write the papers. Only thing I actually learned in this class was some good punctuation skills.
Horrible teacher. He talks too fast when he is ACTUALLY talking about something we should know. He always goes off topic for almost the whole hour. Quizzes almost every class. Rude most of the times, especially when you ask to repeat. Very stern on attendance. Very hard on essays with grammar. Best students got B's. Hasn't posted grades once.

This class was very frustrating as his grading was unfair and inconsistent with the provided syllabus and rubrics. Assignments were posted late and graded late. Would not recommend taking this class or this teacher.
He wasn't understandable when it came to having a medical appointment or a family emergency. He was a very hard grader when it came to essays, he expected it to be completely perfect even when its your first time in the class.
One of the harder english professors (not unfair though), however wasn't arrogant or rude. Was well-educated on subject, and also bumped my grade from a C to a B, but this was during the summer, so he was probably understanding of situation. you will write 5 essays total, plus 6 practice/rough drafts, and a considerable amount of homework from book
Summer session class. Be ready to expend some effort, it's not easy with a condensed schedule. He's a knowledgeable instructor that will help you personally if asked, and you will do well if you work to meet his expectations. You don't get to turn in a slack job and get an 'A'; turn in what meets his 'A' standard and that's what you'll get.
When asked if could repeat what he just said about the final, he refused even though it took 5 seconds to say. He gave details about our final the day before it was due. I would not recommend because he was rude. He was very knowledgeable on the subject matter though.
I took Technical Writing online. I already work in a corporate environment so I thought it was easy. Many of them I do on a daily basis now. For me, this was the easiest class in the world. If you don't work in a corp environment, it could be really tough. Resume building, presentations, etc. He gives you a long time to finish assignments.

Awesome teacher! Easy assignments. Super easy class if you took a writing class in high school. Gives a lot of quizzes over the material discussed in class. Tries to get you interested by using subjects popular in out age group. Has a pretty good sense of humor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! We are there to learn yet he expects everyone to be experts the first try and will not negotiate anything when you try to talk sense into him!!! He was very RUDE on all of the feedback we recieved and always pointed out a the bad things we did on our paper and never had anything good to say! DO NOT take him!

Pretty easy and straight forward. A little secret: He'll pop quiz you on what you learned the previous class day. It's a lot of busy work but it's easy. VERY BASIC ENGLISH.

He was a pretty nice guy, but was terrible at being clear when teaching. He would just give you the assignment and not really go into how to do it. Also he doesn't post any grade until after you take the final.
I decided to take his class based on the reviews and being frustrated is an understatement. He does NOT update grades until the final is over. In fact, even after a week of the final you won't know what your grade is. I feel like it's important to know throughout the semester so that way you can improve your grade. It was really irritating.
Max Smith is a very funny and entertaining teacher although was not very helpful and some lectures can be boring. He doesn't expect much from his students and this class was an easy A for me. I do wish I would have gotten more out of the class. The almost daily pop quizzes were pretty hard but only a small fraction of your grade.

I will agree the pop quizzes are difficult and he's a tough grader on papers, but the quizzes barely affect your grade and he gives more feedback on papers than he actually docks you points for. This is the only professor I've had that refuses to put grades in the gradebook. I am paying a lot of money for his class so it is lazy of him to not simply do something nice for his students. He is hard to talk to, extremely boring, and only does things that are convientent for him. It almost seems as if he can care less about his students.
This is the single worst teacher I have ever had in any of my years of schooling. His criteria for grading is not well done but if you stray from what he wants you will lost points heavily. Extremely strict on grading and doesn't bother putting logic together about why you did what you did. Extremely lazy and very bad feedback on your errors.
I'm torn about this professor. There was a distinct rudeness from him at times that was very degrading and stand-offish. I want to maybe believe he is too intelligent to communicate with people of regular emotion? At times he was understanding, other times I felt his subtext was saying "You are an idiot and I am more intelligent than you."
Definitely not an easy "A", but it is possible. Total of 8 Essays including the final the essay. There are pop quizzes but if you attend class they're not too bad. Attendance is absolutely mandatory! 6 absences and your grade will drop a whole letter, and there are no excuses, Smith isn't very understanding. Try toFind a different prof. if you can!
this teacher has no type of personality. His lectures are boring. He is not clear about what the assignments are going to be about. He is very unorganized. He doesn't care for his students. Attendance is a must. HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. The whole class received no higher than a C. Avoid this class.
He refused to put any grades in the grade book. I had no other errors in my papers, except him writing "confusing" next to seemingly random sentences in my paper, somehow warranting me with a C grade on most papers. English has always been my strongest subject, and I usually ace papers. Not with this guy. Miss a peer editing day? 0 on that paper.
Daily attendance. Grades aren't posted, so your grade is unknown till the end. Make sure you listen closely to lectures and take detailed notes. 2-3 quizzes a week. He spends class time talking about different essay topics instead of essay writing techniques/strategies, but if you work hard and follow his instructions closely, an A is attainable.
simply the worst professor I've ever had, doesn't care for students, gives little to no sympathy what so ever, hard to talk to, and just not a nice guy. I recommend not taking this class, he is a tough grader, does meaningless quizzes
Smith is a very unemotional/robotic professor. He is a decent English professor, but he expects professionalism out of his students. There are pop quizzes at least twice a week, but they are always very easy. Do not get caught procrastinating on your papers because he catches small mistakes very easily.
It seems that when it comes to papers this professor doesn't care much about the writing. Instead he cares more on the punctuation. His quizzes are random and repeated. His lectures don't relate much to actually English.
In my opinion he doesn't have a good way of teaching. He always quizzes you on grammar. He doesn't show any powerpoint or examples. And most of the time he spends the class time talking about things that aren't even related to anything in class, he always releases you early. He's one of those teachers that seem not to care.
I had Smith for freshmen composition. He was a decent teacher, but one thing I noticed was he didnt really care about the writing aspect of your paper. As long as the grammar was near perfect you got an A. Also the quizzes he gives are stupid and basically re worded from the last quiz. Good thing they only make up 10%. Also dont miss class.
I don't know why everyone else is complaining so much about this class. It is a very easy A. If you show up and do your homework you will pass. He is a very easy grader if you have basic writing skills (or just check your grammar with Grammarly). His class is incredibly boring though and there are daily quizzes (very easy though).
To save yourself do not take this class. Max is like a robot and his lectures are boring. He gives pop quizzes, which stinks, and he only grades your grammar and punctuation. He also does not give good feedback, and is unorganized. If he mixes up your papers with another class you will get an F on that paper. For your own good, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Difficult an inaccessible teacher. He is one of the teachers that don't care about students. mean and inconsiderate. very boring lectures, stupid quizzes. Find another teacher if you can!
Professor Smith will make you work for an A, but it IS achievable! Stay ahead with your papers, writing a paper the night before will not cut it. The worst thing you can do to yourself is skip his class. Pop quizzes are frequent, but easy if you take notes when he lectures and review them!! Put in the work, you will do great!
This professor was very inaccessible and inconsiderate when giving feedback. He treats students poorly and does not seem to understand that school is a place to learn and grow. He expects students to write like they have their PhD. I definitely do not recommend this professor who is lacking in their communication skills as well as empathy.
He expects a lot and is a tough grader. He really brings down your grade if you make simple mistakes in your essays. I learned a lot in his Freshman Composition class, but he took so long to get back to my emails that I never had my questions answered by the time I handed my assignments in.
This professor is so inconsistent on grading that you never know what you are going to get. Always leaves derogatory feedback never once was there any positive. This was an online course that was scheduled only for 7 weeks. Had us read a couple of chapters and expected a Ph.D. level essay. Got marked off for things that were not part of the reading

He Is the type of professors that expect you to Teach your self and just grades you. Very little class time is spent on teaching you the skills. most is spent on going off on tangents and talking about the pieces that are supposed to be examples of the type essay you are working but not what you are actually the grammar he grades the essay on.
He does pop quizzes on stuff you havent gone over for weeks. There are a lot of days where he lectures on stuff that add no value to the class.
Smith is teaching an easy class, but makes lots of the days spent in his class unbearable. There will be plenty of days when you will show up to class & you will automatically be given a pop quiz on things you've never learned about & things that aren't even in the book. He puts nothing online & gives great papers terrible grades. DO NOT TAKE.
He is teaching an easy class but makes it feel like we're taking a PhD level one. He does not clearly explains his expectations for the homework and mostly only grades for the grammar. the pop-quizzes are just out of context sometimes. TRY TO AVOID HIM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. His class literally stresses you out for no reasons.
He is a very tough grader. He expects too much from the students. Because it is an online class he does not teach any material. All the resources I had to do the assignments was from the textbook. I did not learn anything in his class. He posts instructions for the assignments two days before it is due. He is very big on grammar.
He's one of the worst professors I've ever had. I hate going to this class because he treats the material like it's life or death. Every paper I've given him has been a C or D and I am a straight A/B student. His grading style is purely opinionated and there's no strict grading rubric.
He had the rough draft of the final paper (that is worth 30% of your grade) due AFTER the final draft, so there was no way to receive feedback on the paper. The other papers had no rough draft turn in. The papers are a joke. He was very unclear with instructions for the papers. Discussions and such are fine. Would not recommend this teacher.
Professor Smith is a super hard grader that is sometimes opinionated. Many times in my essays he would write just the word 'Awkward' and not give any reasons why. He is a very tough grader and I would recommend not taking him unless you want to do badly. I'm on average a B student and I got a D
Professor is condescending and rude. Threatened to dock me points for asking for clarification on his feedback. Workload is insanely heavy for an undergrad course at a community college. Avoid at all costs!
Terrible teacher! Grades off opinion, and gives bad feedback with things like awkward without explanation. Blunt responses to emails and never answers questions completely. Very strict from the start, seems to not care about anyones view except his. Dont recommend, I dropped with 5 days left because I knew hed never give me a chance.
Worst professor I not only have ever had, but could ever imagine. A/B student and I withdrew with an F. 8 things graded in this class, received a 60% as the highest and never was given a rubric for any. Comments were only based on opinion such as, awkward or ridiculous with no explanation why. Emails would be blunt, rude and go days unanswered.
This is, by far, the worst teacher I have ever had. He gives no feedback on essays or discussion posts, and that's the whole class. Those are literally all you are graded on. Also, if you email him, except short, rude responses. This class stressed me out so much because the teacher is literally the worst!
