He's a very charismatic and intelligent professor. His class was not the easiest but if you're willing to work hard it's manageable. The problem sets are important and it's best to do them early and ask any questions you have. Overall I loved him as a professor.
Intimidating initially, takes time to get to know. Go to office hours but make sure you know the material as well as you can. He will not tolerate slackers. Come prepared with answers, he will push you to find the answers on your own. It's good, he forces you to think outside the box and challenge yourself. Tough professor but worth taking.
Here's the lowdown. 3 midterms 15% each and final 55%. Gives problem sets every week, make sure you know how to do them well, they're a reflection of the midterms. Final was a bit harder but nice curve. Overall, great professor. You're welcome beaches.
He likes to trick you. He always puts one or two problems on the midterm that he knows most of the students aren't going to get which can get really annoying but overall, he's manageable. It's not an easy class but if you keep up with the textbook and the problem sets you'll be okay. The curve is generous!
This class wasn't as difficult as last quarter's material since a lot of it was similar (consumer vs producer theory). As other students mentioned, he likes to throw one curveball per exam. You miss one question and you're automatically in the B+ range. In short, you must score near perfect each exam to receive an A. Study hard!!
Nice prof, but make no mistake, he is a tough egg to crack. Will not readily hand out answers 'til the last possible moment. He prefers students to work things out first. Definitely solidifies a concept into one's memory that way.
All I can say is, you will know what POUTINE is by the end of the quarter.
Love his FPS Russia accent, besides that, he's rough on the exams... I've never felt so demoralized after taking a midterm here at UCSD before.
Very helpful and clear. You have to seek him out in office hours to make the most of his help, but he's really great one on one.
Exams are very difficult and require mastery of the subject. The class is difficult but you will learn more with him than with other professors.
Very smart professor. Lecture and note are simple but clear. He is good at letting you think and understand the knowledge. Exams are flexible and tricky but deserve choosing. No hard caculation on exam. The answers are simple. If you feel the calculationis too difficult, you must be wrong. He's one of my favourite Econ prof.
I love Prof. Sinitsyn! He presents all the concepts in a super clear way and most importantly, note-taking friendly. He will not waste your and his time talking about irrelevant thing. So pay attention and make sure you understand everything and you will be fine! Strongly recommend!
Professor Sinitsyn's class is tough, but it's do-able. You just got to work really hard to get the grade you want. Overall, he's a pretty good professor.
The problem sets he gives are much harder than the actual exams. He tries to make sure you understand the concepts and then some. I struggled on the first midterm because I relied on the problem sets and old tests to study. But I completely nailed the second midterm by just going over notes and making up my own problems to practice. Focus in class!
Thisprofessor is really tough . And very stict to the exam score. you work very hard but can not get good score because you do not get partial credits even you just write a wrong step.
Tests are rough; Be happy with 50% on tests. The content is not hard, but this professor prefers to test you on the exceptions to economic principles rather than the rules. I was incredibly annoyed by his habit of intentionally writing incorrect notes on the board and asking us why they were wrong, before we even learned the material.
Worst class I ever took. Lectures are very complicated and even though he might me a good dude outside of class, his teaching sucks. The grading is brutal, TAs don't give partial credits as they should have. But on the bright side he curves midterms, so that something.
He's very clear and concise in his lectures. He gives out homework that 's harder than the exams, so if you can do the homework, you can do the exams. He stresses concepts a lot, which is reflected both in the homework and exams, so make sure you attend lectures! Also, grades on a pretty fair curve.
He doesn't posts notes online, however his lecture is as clear as can be. Attend the lectures, if you miss it, you'll have to read and learn by yourself. Test outlines always the same, 2 easy, 1 medium, 1 hard, and 1 extreme. All worth 10 points, 20points is C-, 38 points is A-. Get the first 4 questions right, and you get an A. very fair
Mr. Maxim is an awesome professor! He has clear and big handwriting and never reads ppt! Besides he always tests us according to what he thinks important. If you study to the point, you will get an A.
Professor Sinitsyn is an excellent lecturer. He explains the concepts really well and his lectures are straight to the point and engaging. Must attend lecture to take notes. Exams are really tough, but there is a generous curve. Must work hard to earn a good grade. His class is tougher than other professors' but he makes it a lot more interesting.
This class, uh. Well in ss2 where everything is so packed and intense and people still get a good grade in their first midterm. If you got a 4050, it will be a B- already! R U KIDDING ME?! This looks like no curve AT ALL! 3050 Hmm, C-! I will not recommend this horrible class. Avoid at all cost, peace out!
Not so sure what all the hype is... This professor has very high expectations. I managed to get better grades in all 3 of my upper div math courses, but a low C in this class (for which I studied the MOST). He does not allow crib-sheets or calculators on exams (computational errors galore w/ no partial credit). Exams are difficult and rushed.
The tests are really hard and there's only 5 questions on the midterms and 8 on final, so if you miss a couple you're screwed. He makes the questions really difficult and confusing, definitely not straight forward. It's hard just to figure out what the question is asking and what you need to do to find the answer. Very demoralizing class!!!
His lecture is ok, but his exams are very hard. He has his own way to teach the materials. The method he used in class was different from textbook so do not rely on textbook. The point I don't like him most is I don't understand why he made some easy concepts became complicated. Isn't it stupid?
Lecture is super clear, problem set (hard so use section & OH) and HIS review session prepare you well. Haters are either too lazy to keep up or misunderstand econ is just plug n chunk. He challenges you to THINK & understand complex world with simple tools. Easy midterm but challenging final. Dun be discouraged, invest time and earn a rewarding A
He doesn't use ppt or post lectures online, so it's critical that you attend classes. Exams are on the harder side, but the curve is always pretty good. The material itself is pretty difficult, but he's an amazing professor and will help if you go to OH. He also always holds reviews for all exams, which are SUPER helpful. Plus he's a hottie!!
Solid, knowledgeable professor with a badass accent. The material is pretty tough so study well.
Very clear on what he expects us to know for the exams. He tried his best to make the class fun. I tried three prof for 100C, and he was the best!
Honestly my favorite econ professor at UCSD. His lectures really help you understand the material. If you study the problem sets and practice exams and fully understand the concepts, you should do well on the exams. His exams are very difficult, but if you study hard and grasp the material, it's not hard to beat the curve.
He is a very good professor. His lectures have a very clear logic and you can learn a lot of things from it.
Don't take him. He's not a bad teacher but his exams are UNNECESSARILY hard. He basically destroys your GPA. I studied very hard and still can't get the grades I want. Just don't.
He's not a bad professor. His exams are just SO HARD. AVOID HIM IF YOU WANT TO MAINTAIN YOUR GPA.
My favorite econ prof so far in UCSD! An extremely smart and clear lecturer; gives extra pts in class if u answer/ask things right; problem sets r useful; exams r not that bad as long as u really know what ur learning--there's nothing u haven't learned on exams (those who say he's too hard don't really understand materials). TAKE HIM. HE'S THE BEST
No Homework, only tests! A very good lecturer that always challenge your intellectual thoughts.
The best teacher I had.
His lecture is clear and inspirational. He is the best!
Best professor in the universe ever! If you have not take his class, you really missed the point of attending UCSD.
Seriously i don't know why so many people think he is awesome. He is literally one of the worst econ professor i have ever met. I mean he is respected and puts efforts but his lecture was confusing without clear structure and gets super hard test that you have no chance to drop the test. Never recommend him if want to have even acceptable GPA
Worst professor ever. Midterm was much harder than his problem sets, practice midterm & notes. Grading scale is horrible, only accounts for midterms & final. I'm an ECON major and am still choosing to withdraw because I will not be able to get a high enough grade after this midterm. He's made me question my ability & direction in life. He's hot tho
One of the best professors I have had. I attended lecture rarely, and did the homework and supplementary materials, and read the book. His tests have interesting, but difficult questions for the time limit given. Mathematical proficiency is a must, but not of a higher level than calculus II.
He won't spoonfeed you, so you actually have to study before lectures if you want to get the most out of them. He has a little bit of an accent, so simple concepts sometimes end up sounding more challenging. Tests are stressful, but always curved. Active studying is key. Content is hard. Teaching style is focused and thoughtful. Would recommend.
He made ECON 100C a lot more interesting and I like his teaching style where it's simple and to the point. The first exam wasn't too bad, but the second one was hard, so watch out for that. Also, his curve is very generous! I think he's the best choice for 100C, so definitely recommend!
Definitely one of my two favourite econ professors. He is the best, explains topics really well.
Im so glad I took Econ100A pass no pass. The materials are difficult and he doesn't use any powerpoint not podcast. If you attend all the lectures and take good notes, you are guaranteed to pass. Despite the difficulty of the exams, he curves your grade very generously. You only need to get half of questions right on final for a B. He's hot hot hot
By far one of the best Econ professors out there at UCSD. Take him if you really want to learn and have a deep and beautiful understanding of concepts, to be very frank I have never gotten an A with him. But he has really been a key force in my economic thinking development. Hands down, what a wonderful teaching style, really makes you think!
Best professor ever met! The lectures are interesting, and he focuses on practice instead of theories. Doing homework isn't mandatory, but is really helpful for exams. Midterms are easy and similar to the practice exams. Really like him! absolutely takes his class again
He's the best! I really enjoy his class, it was interesting and inspiring. The problem sets are helpful to the exam.
The overall experience of ECON100A is amazing. Professor Maxim only uses blackboard, which makes lectures really straightforward. Lectures are fast-paced and well structured. Tests are hard so you need to keep going to lectures and finish problem sets, but the curves are generous too. Be prepared to work hard and gain more.
Interesting and practical class and materials. I recommend you to take this class if you actually want to learn and put some work on it. If you take this class purely because you want to actually learn what he is teaching, then you will enjoy this class.
He is one of my favorite professors. He is straightforward and to the point. He makes it easy by giving you past exams to help you study. However, he makes it difficult by challenging your thinking when you actually take the exam. Overall, he utilizes all of his time and gives you all the information you need. He makes things simple and challenging
Good luck. I'm not sure if it's the new online format or him, but I'm glad I'll never have to go to his class again. Take him if you like pain and the constant fear of failing .
He seems to know his stuff but and his pre-recorded lectures are pretty good. I hate his online test taking format for the class because he only gives 30 mins to answer 4-5 math free-response questions which doesn't seem too bad but he doesn't prepare you well enough for half of the questions on the test . He needs to give more practice problems.
I took his 100A class SP20, and the online format made it HORRENDOUS. He has less than 10 practice questions for each Exam, which is not enough. The exams are 4-5 questions long with only 30 minutes, and these are long calculus based problems. No partial credit were given out. Take his class if you want depression and ruin your GPA.
Professor Sinitsyn is a pretty no-nonsense guy. He clearly states his requirements and expectations to get certain grades at the beginning of the quarter so its easy to understand what you have to do to do well. That being said, he makes all the questions on the exams from scratch so it's difficult to find help through other resources. No negatives
Definitely the most unhelpful prof I've encountered in my four years here. He was very unprepared for the online format switch and made up grading criteria along the way. I once asked for extra practice problems in his OH since I was struggling with the material. He told me to make up my own problems or to google them.... AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
Super smart guy; really tries to get you to understand the material at the foundational level.
He gives clear lecture and well constructed tests. I enjoyed taking his classes!
The absolute worst professor I have ever taken at UCSD. Averages on every exam was an F. This guy was not prepared at all to switch to online. Destroys grade and gives zero partial credit. Horrible at explaining things. Practice problems are nothing like the tests. Avoid at all costs. I promise you it's not worth it. I'd do anything to avoid him.
A lot people say that he is super hard. There are some topics that he acknowledges are super hard and people do get bad grades. However he gives a very fair curve. He is an amazing lecturer that interacts with students throughout lecture and does more than enough practice problems in class.
He explains materials clearly, with helpful examples. He tries to make things easy to understand in lectures. Practice problems and problem sets are super useful to understand and learn stuff. Tests are difficult, but he gives somehow lenient curve. Can learn a great deal from his lectures.
Best lecturer I've ever had. He's extremely clear and never throws equations at you -- he builds them up and gives you a great understanding of the foundation. He curves his tests and quizzes heavily (shouldn't have to, though). I never had to open the textbook once. Very attentive to questions and encourages participation -- even online.
Great lecturer. Did not need to heavily rely on using textbook, but its highly recommended if you want an A. Exams and quizzes are tricky so its important that you fully grasp the material. Problem sets are very useful so take advantage of them.
Remember that Econ 100A is the hardest course among the Econ upper divs and he tells you from the beginning that people will fail the class if you do not understand the basics I really thought he was fair and really knowledgeable about the subject. If you think you can slide by just wishy-washy then you will fail and that' it. He is very responsive
Take his class if you want to screw your GPA. He makes his class very math intensive without explain econ concept. He will assume you know things and just go thru all the math problems. Definitely wouldn't recommend him. He makes the test very tough. And you will need to understand some econ concept by yourself!
Well he is definitely math intense but i explain it very clear gives good feedback. Exams are very clear and very similar to practice problems. i personally do like how its more math than lot of theories and writing. As long as you understand the lectures and problem sets, exams wont be hard at all. Very underrated teacher!
The professor is fine, but the course itself is extremely difficult. You have to understand the concepts and do the practice problems. He gives generous partial credits. Make sure you understand all the steps of the problems. The lecture is heavy, make sure to listen to every word he says because they are all important.
Professor Sinitsyn is a great lecturer and has a good command of the material. He invites questions and participation by the students during live lecture, and will address any questions posed. The class is graded on 4 tests worth 25% each, including the final, but each test only covers the material after the previous exam, so studying is easier.
Sinitsyn is a very solid choice and shows you what econ is really like. The class is definitely hard and very mathematics heavy but he explains the concepts well and cares that you actually learn the material. Class is especially great for building your intuition of economic concepts. As long as you put in the work you should get a good grade.
Professor Sinitsyn is a good lecturer overall but his class structure is extremely difficult. He grades solely on four tests, including the final, each weighted 25%. They only cover the material since the last test which is nice, but the exams are usually extremely difficult and obviously they account for the entirety of your grade.
Professor Sinitsyn is a good lecturer and knows the material well but his class structure is extremely difficult. He grades solely on four exams including the final that each make up 25% of the grade and only cover the material since the last test. The exams are usually very difficult and has a personal scale for curving the exams.
Grade by only three exams is absolutely the worst thing I ever see in UCSD. Each exam is 66 points with 6 questions. Those questions are totally different from the usual homework and practice questions provided. Very tricky questions. Once you fail one or two of the test question, you could get a bad grade. Skip his class if you can!!!!!!
Heard a lot of negative feedbacks about his level of difficulty and his average C+ before taking this class. However, he actually curved a lot and it is not that hard since he just let you compute without requiring knowing too much about economics. If you do your math correctly, you should get a good grade in his class.
Worst professor I have ever seen. The contents are tough but not impossible, the problem is the exam grading. He now requires you to write down and explain your answers but a "concise" way. Even if you do the math right and get the correct answer, if your answer is "too long" or the format is not in grader's taste, you will be docked off most point
His class is purely based on midterms, no other ways to get credits. No electronic notes, only a constant blurry whiteboard on zoom. His exams are very hard and tricky. I have never given a bad rating on RMP except for him. No joke - I studied two days for his first midterm and got a horrible grade. Be aware if you consider taking his class!
Grades are based only on 4 exams, each 5 questions No lecture notes, only blurry whiteboard on zoom recording Professor constantly skips steps, doesnt explain solutions Average score on each exam this quarter was an F Avoid unless you want a dent in your GPA
This class is unbelievably hard. I studied my butt off & still failed every single exam. Grades based on 3 exams & a final, each 50min & 5 questions. He curves the scores but sets a lowest possible raw score to pass the exam. The 1st exam it was 22 out of 50 & the other ones were 24 out of 50. He is very precise and well prepared for lectures.
I was terrified by prof Sinitsyns horrible rumors at first. But after taking his class, Id say the tests are not as hard as what people described. Its important that you should take his class synchronously (skipping class and watching the recording doesnt work). Take him if you are good at Math (apply formula and computation, specifically).
Sinitsyn is a hard professor, but if you take the time to practice the concepts in lectures and go to discussions, you can do well in his class. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I highly recommend going. His curves for the tests are super nice, as long as you pass them. This class is a lot of work.
I don't know how he has such a high rating. He teaches his lectures as if you are already an expert on the topic. When doing examples, he goes straight into the hardest example possible and skips massive steps to get to the answer quickly. Extremely hard to follow along with. You better have time to study outside of class to teach yourself.
Professor Sinitsyn does a great job, in my opinion, with teaching Econ 100A. If you work through all of the practice problems he gives out and understand how to solve each one (he always posts the answers before the exam), the tests are more than fair. There's a pretty consistent curve on each exam so don't fret about not getting 100%.
Professor Sinitsyn is the best econ professor I met at UCSD. He clearly explains everything in class! The only thing you need to do is just follow him and do the problem set. The exam is not hard, trust me! There are plenty of econ major students who are poor at math, that's why they can't do well in exams.
Professor Sinitsyn may be a great professor IN-PERSON. However, online he is the devil incarnate or at least his exams are it seems. Trying to take an ECON test through Canvas while showing your work online is terrible. Not to mention he isn't clear about the curve at all. Take him IN-PERSON or don't take him at all.
