Grade reflects two midterms and a final. Extra credit pop quizzes are given at anytime during lectures and discussions. Homework optional. Mostly uses Piazza. Rushes through lecture and a bit hard to understand.
Curriculum isn't difficult at all, there's optional hw but midterms are hard and final is worth 40% of your grade
Pretty hard to understand and he elaborates on certain things too much and others not enough. Did not enjoy his class. Made the material unnecessarily hard and i had to teach myself everything.
very hard to understand his lectures, and he did a lot of mistakes during the lectures. he is a good person, but he need to improve his lecture. his tests are not easy as well.
I really enjoyed his lecture. Very nice person.
Max is a cool dude. The best lecture I ever had. Make lecture easy to understand and did a lot of examples. Exams are fair. 2 midterms on final. I definitely recommend taking Max. Go to office hours if needed, he is very helpful.
I will be honest that he is a bit hard to understand, can go a bit fast and makes mistakes but if you call him out he will gladly fix his mistakes. He gives some extra credit opportunities with pop quizzes during lecture which really helps your grade! He is very funny in class, makes the learning stats not too much of a drag. Office hours, HELPFUL!
I don't think he is a tough grader. He made his tests not quite hard except for the second one. As long as you do all his homework and go to classes, you will be good.
Maxime's a very cool prof & you can tell that he truly cares about his students. He's always willing to stop lecturing anytime to answer students' questions & would never make anyone feel stupid, even when people ask him the most easiest questions! He breaks down hard concepts in a way that a child could understand, which I appreciate so much.
Max is a great professor who really cares about the success of his students. He is very organized. Lectures were clear and understandable, weekly homeworks were great practice, midterm and final were straightforward. Highly recommended!!
Maxime can be very friendly & has a great sense of humor. Other than that though, he goes very quickly through material & doesn't allow much time for questions/clarifications at all. He gets very stand offish if you ask something he deems "obvious" & although he's very knowledgable, his explanations aren't great. Self-teaching necessary.
Max is a comparatively good professor. He would carefully explain most details and his exams are quite basic. It's not that difficult for students to receive a good grade in his class. However, because of the content of this class, his teaching speed might be too fast for some students.
Keep up with the material and you'll be fine. He gives plenty of resources to review what will be on the midterm and final in detailed videos that are relatively easy to follow. If you took stats in high school this is similar for the first few weeks. The second half of the course is much more challenging and requires more attention/study.
I took STA 13 online, max was a cool dude and posted the lectures online in case someone missed it. There were quizzes every 2 weeks and 1 midterm and 1 final all mandatory about 10 questions max on the final and midterm. But he prepared you well for it by giving a practice final and also created videos. Homework not required to turn in.
This class was just a no for me. The only reason I gave 2/5 is because he is a funny guy and occasionally made me laugh during lectures. He kept reminding the class about no cheating which I was taken aback by because it's already hard enough w online school and to be constantly told of consequences if someone was to cheat was just unnecessary.
Most unpleasant class I have taken thus far at UC Davis. Max is funny and charismatic but could b more emotionally literate. Rushed through lectures and tended to oversimplify/steam roll students when they asked questions. Was confusing-he demonstrated that he really cared while also completely missing the mark on how to connect with the students.
The material is graspable and the tests werent too demanding. However, he was very rude to me over email especially regarding grades. I felt intimidated to reach out to him and was blamed and gaslit when I did. Overall Im just happy I passed because I felt out of control of my grade from week one.
I had him for two statistics courses and had a blast in both of them! He is one of the only professors I've had so far that could make an online class dynamic. He was very considerate and open to questions, but expected you to put the work in.
One of my fav stats professors at UCD. He was super funny, understanding, and supportive! He gives you everything you need to succeed in the class. Sometimes, it was difficult to understand him, but he was pretty accessible outside of the class. Put effort into the class and you will pass.
6 hw assignments, 2 midterms, 2 projects and one final. This course had a lot of workload, and there were many typo error appeared in discussion solution and homework solution. Overall, this course was not hard. Professor Max was nice.
He has weekly homework, but dont take it as a negative! it's a great grade buffer and you also learn a lot from them. His exams are very similar to his hw and practice exams. If you do all the Hw and study a bit you will do well. STA135 is a very hard course but Max was able to explain it in "kindergarten" level. One of the best stats teacher!
Fantastic professor! The grade was base on 6 HWs, 2 MTs with group projects, and a final project. The MTs are easy as long as you've carefully reviewed his exam hints. The projects are not very difficult as long as you've finished your homeworks. I really like his sense of humor. Best STA professor I've ever had in UCD.
Max is really funny and caring. He chats a lot in class and cares about the process students learn. He tries to let students understand the meaning behind the concept or formula. Try to talk in class! He will appreciate it. Definitely one of the best professors in the STA department. BTW the final project is really easy.
Max's teaching is awesome. He provides enough detailed explanation. For theory with lots of algebra, he goes through them step by step. He won't skip the part is hard to explain. For R, the handout includes a example and he will implement techniques on it. For tests, he will tell us his expectation and why we need to know those concepts.
Avoid this professor, trust me, you won't regret. His lectures are hard to understand, exams are tough and he speeds through materials.
Currently taking him for SSI. 4 quizzes(30%), 4 (short) HW + Rstudio (15%), 1 midterm (30%), final (30%). Hard to understand, keeps saying it's easy to understand and it is "kindergarten" work. Currently teaching myself and studying with a few people because he teaches using lecture notes written by a colleague. I rely on lecture notes to do the HW
First of all, this guy cracks me up. Like, the way he speaks and the way he references the material is hilarious to me. His lectures are alright, he kinda just reads off the notes the entire time but he's pretty caring about his students and wants everyone to do well. His tests are pretty light and the quizzes (if online) can all be found online.
he changed his grading policy halfway through the quarter and told no one. made part of the grade based off of attendance IN AN ONLINE CLASS when he said he wouldn't many times. stopped attending class and I just use the lecture notes he took from another prof. started a midterm 20 minutes early without telling anyone and refuses to accept blame.
His french accent was thick and heavy making a lot of the class and material hard to understand. He's funny but many have asked him in class for help or to further explain a concept and he always responded with "you should already know this." other than his poor teaching, sta 13 is easy self-teaching. exams and quizzes were very easy.
I really enjoyed taking Max's stats class for STA100. He has a very bright personality and a great sense of humor that relieved a lot of stress for most students. Although he joked a lot about making exams and material harder to lower our class mean, he always reassured his students that they'll do well and that they're capable of passing his class
i really enjoyed maxs class! i found it engaging & he is always willing to answer questions + his tests were fairly easy & the homework wasnt too bad either! he uses notes from another prof, but theyre pretty detailed & he always goes over examples when teaching new material which i found extremely helpful :)
Max is one of the best in the statistics department ever! I lowkey want to minor in statistics now because of him! Very clear on what he wants you to know for the exams (which are pretty easy and he provides a formula sheet). I respect this man so much and his lectures are worth attending as you get the most experience. I am grateful to Max!
Max was hands down the best stats prof I could've gotton. He was intimidating at first but he lets you know exactly what is expected to know - and I mean EXACTLY, he gave us 10 specific questions to study before our final. Class grades were really left skewed so don't think you can do terrible as long as you just actually listen to lectures.
Max can come off as intimidating at the start, but he's actually really funny and kind. He's super clear about what he expects from students, especially on tests. Midterms and final were extremely fair, so just do the homework and do the lecture notes and you will be just fine! The material isn't hard to grasp either. Good luck!
I love prof. Max, he is hilarious and really makes the material clear, practical, and straight forward to understand. HW is given weekly and is a mixture of simple R programing and problems from the class, start early on it, it could be difficult to cram in one night. For tests, review hw and be clear on concepts (explaining T/F questions).
Max is a clown!!! He is a true gentleman and loves to have a true laugh. The course has 2 midterms and a final. He provides practice exams and questions which mimic the questions on the actual exam. His lecture notes are kind of messy but just practicing questions and HW will be enough to ace the exams.
I flunked the midterm, terribly. However, Max structured the class to allow for me (and others in my position) to still receive an A in the class, which I did. This is a stats class, so you gotta study and definitely do the homework. Max seems tough, but he is understanding and always gives credit on midterms even if you get the wrong final answer.
He's really funny & laid back. Exams include problems similar to practice exams, lecture, & hw. START HW EARLY. Cannot cram it. Make sure to review hw + practice exams, & look over lecture notes before exams. Provides a formula sheet for each exam. R-programming portion of the hw is very easy, don't stress too much even if u don't know how to code!
i took ap stats so it was easy but i can see how new stat takers would be confused. his explanations dont make sense sometimes so google it, its the same concepts anyway. study guides heavily reflect the exams and he emphasizes stuff that show up on exams in lecture notes posted to piazza. ngl i dont think it would be a reach to call him a tsundere
Max is a great teacher and he really cares for his students. He can come off as intimidating in emails but he is so much nicer over zoom and in person. I absolutely love how passionate he is about the topics that he teaches. He is also helpful in giving feedback about project drafts. Though he has high expectations, he will help you meet them :)
Thought he was okay. Midterms were fairly easy and he didn't write the questions intending to trick you, so averages were high. Answered questions during class, but sometimes the answers were vague. But the lecture notes were clear and he did have a good sense of humor. Most of the grade was test-based, so be prepared for that (85% for 3 tests)
Max can come off as intimidating but he truly wants you to succeed in his class and is helpful during office hours. Midterms were two parts (group project and in-class exam) and similar to homework problems. He let the class choose to either have an in-class exam or group project for the final. No curve but he dropped one of the in-class exams.
The class is easy, you just need to listen carefully during the lectures and read lecture notes. There are two midterms, every midterm has a project and written exam. The written exams are easy. Projects are very helpful since we learned how to write a formal statistical report, which is very useful in future career. Final is also a project.
Good professor, hilarious lectures. Practice exams are similar to the actual one.
To be clear, I’m not the best at math, but I would’ve gotten a better grade if I hadn’t slacked the beginning of the quarter. He explains concepts well, but this one time I went to office hours (as you should if you’re clueless) and he kinda yelled at me and accused me of not going to lecture. Anyways didn’t go back and ended w a b.
Continuing my last review, he still helped me but I wanted to cry lol. I didn’t mean to rate him as “awful” so I changed it a bit. Anyways he grades based on three exams and quizzes every few weeks. I believe 5 of them
In my experience Max was very unclear when teaching and often did not explain things thoroughly. I was left wondering how he got to a certain solution/how to do certain problems. Additionally, made very strange remarks directed towards women and girls and about how they "like/dislike" certain things as an entire class of people.Wouldn'trecommend.
No curve but the exams were fairly easy. Practice exams were really helpful. Take notes, do some practice and you will do well.
He does not really regrades things, except that he is good.
Midterm is so easy, but the final is very hard.
Midterm is easy and final is way too easy.
He's very concise in his lectures and funny as well. Class is test-heavy since he doesn't collect homework and attendance isn't mandatory. I advise going to lectures and practicing outside of class.
Material covered in class isn't too bad. He does a decent job at explaining; main problem is accent. He does come off as perverted and childish. He has no shame in flirting with the female students during lecture and always throws inappropriate "jokes" in class. It's disgusting. He is very rude and narcissistic. If you're a girl please be careful.
I took STA 13 during summer, his lectures are funny a. Class is test-heavy since attendance isn't mandatory. I advise going to lectures and practicing outside of class. He gave extra credit to our 2 midterm and final, about 5--7 points.
He provides lecture notes and uploads them before class. Goes in depth about the notes during lecture. Homework was straightforward. Practice exam provided before midterms and final. Actual tests are very similar to the practice exams. Also pretty funny and easy to talk to outside of class. Has a soft spot for students who engage in class.
A lot of the hate comes from his personality which is just someone who is very unhinged and funny although it comes off as "unprofessional" and "rude" to others which is an overstatement. Amazing professor though, teaches well and very clearly. Accessible and exams are very fair. Easy to get an A if you put at least a little bit of effort in class.
His lecture notes were great but they were clearly written by someone else, maybe a TA. He is not a very good teacher and makes weird and somewhat uncomfortable comments during class. His practice tests are pretty similar to the midterms and overall a pretty easy class, especially if you've taken AP stats or STA 13.
I have to say this is the best STA teacher ever! Humorous Professor ! I love his teaching way. THIS PROFESSOR MAKES STA100 EASIER!
He was not the best professor. His lectures are super hard to follow and therefore I learned very little. Then when he has the answers for homework or midterms many of the answers are wrong. I was just overall very confused and felt unprepared for many of the tests. Also he DOES NOT curve!!!!!!
i actually did not check ratemyprofessors until later in the year after having him and i do not feel that his high rating reflects his teaching style/ him in general - i find his teaching style to be very poor and his attitude toward students at times is flat out disrespectful. his slides are well made but likely made by someone else
Professor Pouokam is outright rude, disrespectful, and unsympathetic towards his students. It feels like he WANTS his students to do poorly and how he teaches and directs class is solely dependent on his current mood. His thick accent and extremely bad handwriting makes lectures so difficult to follow. By far, worst professor I have had at Davis.
said he won't curve because he doesn't know how to even though half the class failed the second midterm
Very unclear most of the time. Heavy accent and poor handwriting. Questions are often plagued with bad grammar. His responses to questions almost always have terrible grammar. Exceptionally rude in responses to questions. Refused to curve midterm grades even though much of the class failed.
Max is funny and most of the stuff in other reviews were clearly jokes. Can be hard to understand sometimes, but you get used to it. Always is clear about what will be on tests, but grading is harsh -- small mistakes can result in half-credit taken off. Extra credit in lectures for answering questions. Discussions are super useful.
He doesn't like his students. He does not own up to his mistakes, instead attacks students who point them out. Grading scale was clear but with no curve stating "I do not know how to curve" (as a stats prof.). All resources are on Piazza and never posted to Canvas. Lectures were difficult to follow and consisted of rewriting his own notes. Avoid.
Pouokam exams and HWs are pretty straightforward but does not care for students. He makes inappropriate comments in lectures especially if you're female and is unprofessional in his role as an instructor especially if you have issues that need to be addressed. You will lose a lot of points for simple mistakes even if the method is correct on exams.
Jokes around more than teaches during lectures which is why I didn't attend any in-person. All lecture notes (very straightforward) and recordings are available on piazza. One homework assignment a week, 2 midterms (almost identical to study guide), and one final. Very reasonable and doable. Easy to pass if you are willing to put in the work.
lec resoruces on piazza, lec recording on canvas. Organize, easy to find. Didn't go to lec 90% of the quarter, only watched recordings at 2 speed. Did hw right before test as a review. SUPER SUPER easy test. I find mdtm2 slightly harder. easy A.
Class itself is doable, exams are fair with extra credit, lecture notes and recordings are uploaded online so attendance is unnecessary. Lots of partial credit. His humor occasionally crosses the line but I don't believe it comes from malicious intent. Do hw, review lecture notes, and you should be fine. Highly recommend compared to the other profs
Max is an amazing professor. He makes his lectures extremely clear and entertaining, making sure to stop for any questions. Overall, a great intro to stats, and he made me interested in pursuing it as a minor!
Either you're a hetero frat bro with a mind for math and you LOVE him, or you're everyone else. Rude and misogynistic. Thick accent, jumbled lectures. Refused to curve a midterm where the mean grade and median grade were failing. Although the content was fairly easy I often felt overwhelmed, confused and set up to fail. Very angry man. AVOID PLEASE
This was the very first stats class in my life. His lectures are not helpful, he literally just reads his slide. Doesn't answer students' questions thoroughly and refuses to accept any mistakes he may have made. I FAILED MIDTERM 2 and he didn't curve. He is also a creep to the female students in the class making many strange comments about women.
He's a funny guy and makes lectures very enjoyable and easy to follow along. Homework was optional but useful for the exams. Grade only composed of 2 midterms and 1 final. He makes his exams very fair. The exams are almost exactly like his practice exams so if you can easily do those practice exams you can easily pass the real thing.
prof is extremely rude to students on Piazza. Merely helpful outside of class, seldom replies to email. Homeworks are a lot, let us do 3 R group projects though he never talks about it in class. Exams were fair but largely don't resembles practice. Lecture were messy and unclear. study this class based on previous knowledge. avoid him if you can
Avoid him if you can. Too much homework a week which is impossible to finish. Very rude for students by allowing himself to make mistakes but 0 tolerance for us. No matter how well you write, he's bound to subtract some points from you projects.
the worst stats prof I ever had in my life. Lots of homework per week and three of R projects even though he never talks about R in class. Rarely reply to email/piazza and messy lecture note. If you love doing R, you can talk this class with him. unless it will be painful.
Max is funny but his humor can go overboard sometimes. I didn't go to class or discussion and just watched lecture recordings. His tests have no surprises, and are directly from the HW and practice exam. No R on the exams, and the R on the HW is barely even graded, so don't let that factor dissuade you from taking the class
Max is a great professor. He really cares about students, willing to stay past his office hours to help you, and allows makeup exams if you miss a test. Each exam also had a group project, but him and the TA were really good at giving feedback on projects before it was due, and the grading on the projects was fairly generous.
Max is a great stats professor. Sure, his lectures aren't the best and homework can seem like a lot sometimes, but you can tell Max really cares about students. He also is helpful in office hours where you can ask him more specific questions rather than just relying on lecture material, so attend those for help. Fair exams/projects. Take him!
Max is a cool guy but not a good professor. Lectures did not seem organized. I'd recommend going to lecture as his lectures are easier to follow in real time. Graded by 5 homeworks, 2 midterms and a final. Midterms and final are graded generously. Gives extra credit pop quizzes and the points are applied to the midterm grades.
Straight-forward content, though his lectures are all over the place. As long as you do the homework and practice exams, there's really no excuse for you to do badly. You could probably get by without even going to lecture, but it would be better if you went anyway. He grades very generously. He cares for students, but you need to put in work, too.
In the first few weeks, he seemed to go out of his way to come off as a "mean" teacher. However, during exams and second half of the quarter, he genuinely seemed to care about us, so don't let him get to you. Took a while to grade exams, but they were graded leniently. Pop quizzes for extra credit during lecture. Exams reflect lecture material.
Although he is lazy and rude when answering questions, Max always grade asignments fairly. Homeworks and projects have high proportion. The final is a presentation which 95% is the lowest score. As long as you study, you can get A without any challenges.
Took this class Winter 2023 and was super easy. Was really funny and made jokes about him being the janitor when a student came in. Gives extra credit points during lectures toward your exams through "pop quizzes." Material was super easy and test problems were very nearly identical to practice test problems. Almost always extra credit on the exams
He wasn't very approachable and generally rude to people who asked questions. His study guides also had many errors on them and he did not teach the concepts very well.
Very good professor. Serious study will result in good grades. Lectures are easy to follow and give extra credit. Homework and study materials greatly help with exams.
The lectures were difficult to understand. He doesn't curve. Avoid if you can.
He made the class feel like a breeze. There is extra credit but no curve. There is homework, quizzes, a midterm, and a final. He is very fair when grading, so there is ample partial credit. All lectures are recorded.
Literally the best sta 103 teacher, you should go to class because he gives pop quizzes that can only boost your grade and it will never hurt it. You can not perform well on the midterm and final and still be able to pass the class by doing the homework and pop quizzes. The pop quizzes boosts your grade up dramatically.
Max always has so much energy and is very passionate! He is super lenient and so far has given easy exams with helpful practice midterms preceding them, which he reviews before exams. He answers questions and explains topics clearly. Homeworks are weekly, partially regular problems and partially executed in R (simple functions, guides provided).
Max is very kind and clearly cares about students; he also has a great sense of humor and is a lenient grader/curver. However, his lack of English fluency (oral and written) makes the class somewhat frustrating. Exams are riddled with errors and his lectures are difficult to understand. You will easily pass but you may not learn very much.
You can tell Prof. Max cares about his students and their inputs after exams as well as tries to make lecture as entertaining as possible. He always added in extra credit on exams meaning your score is always higher by 2-3 points and he drops the lowest homework grade. His accent and his fast pace during lecture will make you rewatch the lecture.
lots of mistakes on exams, never emails back, rude, lectures are hard to understand. not very helpful when you ask questions. I had to teach myself most of the material. if you don't have any previous knowledge about statistics its much harder (I'm surprised I even got a B) I had to do lots of studying and watch many YouTube videos lol
Sometimes lecture were hard to understand in the moment, but all lecture notes were posted online so I just studied those. Exams were a mess, where many answers on the multiple choice were just wrong or formatted wrong. Also he randomly added a midterm and changed the dates of other midterms half way into the quarter to "test how it goes."
Wasn't very helpful when I needed help. He was rude during office hours and genuinely looked annoyed when I would ask questions. His exams typically had typos and errors. Sometimes my answers wouldn't match with the multiple choice questions. His lectures are are hard to follow because of his accent. It's also hard to follow what he's writing.
Yes, the exams often had grammar/formatting/other errors, and the professor did not always respond professionally to grade-related requests. However, his lectures were recorded, his notes were always posted well ahead of time, he gave us all the formulas on exams, and he handed out a lot of extra credit. Plus, he makes a lot of tequila jokes.
i was very confused in lectures and ended up not going by the end of the quarter. but if you do all the given homework and practice problems then you should have no problems on the exams. notes posted online
Possibly the best stats prof speaking as a 4th year stats major, he's hilarious and very passionate about giving you work that will help you suceed in the real world and is willing to cut out the bullshit that doesn't help you in the real world. If you put in the effort it should be an easy, but valuable experience. Highly reccommend.
Max's lecture is such straightfoward and exams are extremely similar to practice. Also, hws, projects have high proportions. Final is a presentation which everyone get really high grades. It is the most easy class to get an A, unless you don't do any work.
He explained things very comprehensively if fast, the stuff he assigns is helpful and the pre-tests are very accurate.
there is a project after every midterm, but the gourp members are assigned RANDOMLY, even for the final project. it just really overwhelmed to do the project with people you dont know. can't connect efficiently (people dont respond in the discord and they dont want to meet in person)during final week!
AVOID, you can get better grade and put less effort in this class if your take other professors 106. Graded extremely harsh on the project!!!!!!
Take him if you want to get bumfiddled by group projects where your grade is in other random people's hands. He assigns big groups without giving much structure which is chaotic.
Easily one of the best professors in the stats department. Midterms are verbatim to practice midterm, & provides you with a formula sheet. Regardless how poorly you do, he makes it clear everyone will pass. Seeing some complaints about the projects, but our final exam was a project, average was a 93%, & minimum grade out of 20 groups was 92% LOL.
Put in a little bit of effort (or be assigned a good group for the projects) and you will pass. 6 hw. 2 midterms pretty similar to practice. Group project with the written test (worth 50% each of the midterm grade). Final group presentation. Not a hard class. The issue is Max can come off harsh and won't answer questions, but his grading is fair.
Very kind and care professor. Wants students to succeed but mainly wants students to learn. Explains concepts well, project heavy and random groups. Grades pretty leniently and exams really similar to practice. As long as you attend lecture and take notes, you will grasp everything.
I loved this professor. His notes are not easy to understand UNTIL you watch his lectures because he breaks it down step by step. Homework and practice exams are SO similar to midterms. You get to apply what you actually learn. Still love this professor a lot. R code is not on exam.
Bro has a good heart, but his lectures are confusing. Often, he can't explain concepts clearly, and sometimes he can be rude.
Prof was great. However, please STOP ASSIGNING RANDOM GROUPS for projects and the final! I ended up doing all the work while my group members free-rode and didn't even bother to respond to messages. I prefer to be solely responsible for my grade!!!
Exams only have low proportion and most of grades are from hws and projects. Although he is lazy and reluctant to help students, the grading is really generous. He will automatically assign you into groups of project, which is not good, but you may get good grades if make efforts.
He's super flexible and gives free points on every exam. Even though he's not the best lecturer, he gives students all the tools they need to get a good grade in his class.
Although you may learn nothing, it is the easist way for an A.
Slow and repetitive in lecture, I skipped class and went through the recordings later as needed. Handwritten notes were provided, which got confusing to search through when looking for a specific concept, but had many good examples. The notes were extremely helpful on homework and exams. Prof is a little curt, but also kind of silly sometimes.
Lectures were boring, prof is super inaccessible outside of class. Practice problems during lecture and discussion are exactly like the HW which is exactly like the tests (mostly). Not an easy class but there are lots of resources to help you out.
Such a funny guy and made lectures interesting. If you took AP Stats this class will be easy for you. Homeworks were graded lightly. 3 midterms, one of them online, one short answer, and one multiple choice. We got to vote if the final was short answer or MCQ. Questions were fair and formula sheet was extensive which made things easy. I would take!
He might be the best choice for 104. The tasks might be heavy, and he teaches unclearly. However, the grading is really generous. More than a half of the class get an A.
DO NOT take Pouokam over the Summer. He does not adapt his work for Summer Session. His lectures are impossible to follow because his handwriting is terrible and he just waves his hand around and circles his ancient notes. He gives projects that are due either the day after or before the midterm with a weeks notice. Makes jokes when you criticize.
......................avoid him
Max was a super nice professor who cared about his students. His lectures were super meh but it's all good bc his notes are good and you can self study through them. First midterm was online which boosts your grade. Two more midterms after that and a final. Were kinda hard but he gave 2% extra credit and a curve at the end from what I know.
Professor Pouokam is a good lecturer, and his tests and homework assignments are fair. My main qualm with this course is the amount of group projects, 3 to be exact. Groups are randomly assigned and the projects are hefty.
Professor Maxime's class is pretty straightforward. Exams are very similar to practice, and projects/homework make up a big part of the grade. Unstuck Study AI has been a helpful study tool too.
Professor Pouokam is a nice guy but incredibly unorganized and frustrating. Instructions on projects are unclear and hidden topics take up most of your grade. Final presentation was absolutely horrible. Makes me want to drink too much tequila.
Overall good professor. I learned a lot from this class. His guidelines could be clearer, but he was such a nice grader. Heavy workload but worth it because you learn. He seems harsh but you can tell he wants his students to succeed. Do the work and pay attention, it's highly likely you will get an A.
Max graded really generously, and there was no stress when taking his courses. Exams were exactly the same with practice, and only contributed 25% of final grade. Remaining were hws and projects. The only bad thing was he randomly assign the group of projects. If your group members were weak, you had to do more works but still got high grades.
I loved having Max as a professor! His lectures are interesting and he's actually pretty funny. Lots of resources as everything (including notes) is posted in piazza which is super helpful. Most of your grade is group projects though with random group members but he is a fairly generous grader!
Aight so it's only been one week but his glistening forehead has me locked in. he is honestly HOT, H-O-T when he puts his hands under the cam. OMG
Not a bad professor. His exams were not a lot of questions and 2 of the 3 of them were all MC which made it annoying because no partial credit=all or nothing. You don't need to go to discussion (I did not) and the R portion of the class is torture. You don't need it for exams though. He is also kinda odd sometimes but he'll give back points!
Don't miss any homework. He dropped the lowest project score in the end, and I was so grateful for him to do that. Grading for the final presentation was very linent as long as you tell him correctly how you could've improved.
He's a great professor and all-around great guy. He provides an extensive formula sheet during exams and cares a lot that everyone learns everything they need from his class. As long as you do the homework and use the piazza resources, you'll be fine. There's no curve because his class average is really high.
Pretty fair grader, but half of our midterm assignments are group projects which we only have 4 days today. Never fully explains what he expects from our assignments, so many people turn in projects with missing or incomplete work. He is generally pretty rude when students ask questions (in class or in office hours), but it is not hard to pass.
Professor Pouokam is one of the best stats professors I've had at UC Davis. His notes are very clear and easy to understand especially if you don't go to lecture. Exams are very fair and similar to the practice exams. Grades projects fairly and gives clear grading criteria. He's also funny
Very passionate instructor who may not be the best teacher in the classroom, but he is conscientious and a good teacher who looks out for his students.
Very light HW grader. Gave 3 midterms, the first was online, the last mid and final are MCQ (which kinda sucks). Attendance is not mandatory. Lecture notes are on Piazza. He's funny and genuinely cares for students. Just make sure you study hard cause this class ain't easy or curved. He will give extra credit for each test tho.
Don't reccomend unless you are willing to put in a lot of time for this class. 3 midterms - 1st was online, 2nd free response, 3rd was mcq, and final was mcq as well despite students trying to convince him to change to FRQ as it allows for partial credit.
Professor gives so many resources to succeed, lectures and notes are easy to understand, and he's pretty funny.
This class requires a lot of work like any other math class; if you practice enough, you'll recognize the patterns easily. For the MC exams, he kept saying "I'm allowed to trick u" and he did lol, the answer choices were confusing. But he's chill, explains stuff well and it does reflect on the exams, just pay attention to what he says in lectures
The STA 100 course is easy, but the professor is tough. He does not adjust his classes to the university schedules and is pretty rude to people while replying to emails unprofessionally. He allows him to make as many mistakes as he wants but does not let students make even one mistake. If you can bear this, it is a fairly easy class to get A.
He's ok. The homework reflected the exams somewhat well, but there were errors in answer keys for homework/discussions/practice exams on occasion which confused some people. The final exam (MCQ) was curved. Also his handwriting ain't the best but you get used to it.
He's a solid professor. Stats wasn't an overly difficult class. He lectures well enough for you to get an idea of the homework. The first midterm being online also helped a lot. He's good but not great
Not a very well run class. He contradicts himself a lot and it's clear about things he professes to be extremely important for you to know properly. There is no curve (avg grade on mid2 was D+) but there are extra credit quizzes so make sure to come to class. Projects dragged me down a bit, but grading was lenient. Go to OH, he will explain more.
He was ok. Lectures were straightforward but sometimes he said confusing/contradictory things. Was kind of condescending when people asked him questions. Exams were easy (I took AP stats though so I had a good foundation) and he lowered the point value for each exam as a "curve"/EC. Wording on his MCQ exams were odd but the curve made up for it.
3 major exams paired with coding projects, assigned/random groups, confusing lectures but exams reflected practice well, harsh grading and easy to loss points on mcq and t/f questions. Projects graded fairly. Pop up quizzes as extra credit. Confusing but not terrible, a lot of things seem to depend on his mood.
Confused and disorganized lecture. The practice exam is not similar to the real one. If you have another choice, plz select another professor. Be attention, why does he have 3.5 rmp right now, since in the original final exam, it was a presentation, so it's a pretty easy A class. But he changed the syllabus, the final would be a handwritten exam.
You really get what you put in. I found the group projects frustrating, but they're super helpful if you're trying to do statistics for work or imagine it as a part of your future career. He's chill. He's accessible outside of class. Sometimes he seems harsh, but he really means well. He's always clear about what's on the exams. Thank you Max.
Confuse lecture, you need learning by yourself. AVOID!
I was late for three minutes and he did not let me do the pop quiz.
The professor's lecture is completely illogical. The group project allows for free team formation, but because he doesn't know how to set it up, team formation is forced by signed team. Examinations are different from practice. If you want to get an a, change the professor quickly
Max is a very silly professor, you'll enjoy random comments he'll make. He posts detailed examples of everything coding related, so if you follow those for the homeworks and projects, you'll do great. His exams are more tricky, he likes to throw in tiny topics mentioned very briefly that aren't covered on the homeworks at all.
This stats class is awful due to R Studio homework. The professor is unreachable and unhelpful, lectures don't align with hard coding assignments, and late work is strictly penalized. Homework is 18% but feels impossible, even with AI help. It's time-consuming, unrelated, and frustrating. I HATE this class because of R! Would not take again.
He's definitely not the worst professor i've ever had, but he's not great. His handwriting is pretty much illegible, and he encourages people to ask questions, then is condescending when responding. However, exams are pretty straightforward and he does offer EC on each one. He also has EC pop quizzes for ppl who attend lecture
AVOID!! Worst exams ever. A lot of tricky questions because he's “allowed to do it”. Friend of mine has 4.0 gpa yet still can't get half score on midterm. NO CURVE!
took his STA100 and felt fine, but 108 is a completely different experience. The midterm questions were tricky and seemed disconnected from the homework, discussion worksheets, and lecture examples. The lectures often felt disorganized
Extremely difficult exam questions, disorganized lectures; literally setting up us for failure. No curves either. Highest score on MT 2 was 88%. Unhelpful office hours.
Exams are not like the practice at all. Hard multiple choice that we have not gone over in class, lecture does not help, very strict exam grading around a D+ average. Group projects with random teams. Oh brother.
The exams are kinda tricky, but I personally enjoy the projects. Learn a lot about R Studio. Need to put in a lot of effort.
Funny guy, kinda like his humor, but definitely need to study A LOT for the exams. Very difficult exams, but he gives extra credit. The projects are helpful in improving both grades and skills.
Dude isn't a bad lecturer and makes some jokes, but his tests are just stupid. Writes questions trying to trick you instead of measure your stats knowledge. So many test typos and issues, the class becomes about trying to guess what he's thinking instead of actually learning stats. Try to avoid.
He makes this course hard!
Please DO NOT take him!!!
Max takes an easy classes and manages to make it unbearably difficult and make everyone unnecessarily stressed. He can't teach lectures well, his hw/lecture content doesn't match up with what's being tested (M3 is so difficult), and hardly responds on piazza about grades. He does give EC in class and a slight curve. Possible to get an A—STUDY hard
Besides the 3rd midterm being administered very poorly, this class really was as not as bad as others are making it out to be. Definitely show up to lectures. He has odd humor and is an ok lecturer, but gives extra credit quizzes and free points on exams. Wording on exams can be odd at times, but grind every resource given and you will be ok.
this class genuinely made me contemplate my future. was so much harder than it needed to be. he always joked about drinking tequila in class but this class almost turned me into an alcoholic. dont take him if u want to keep your sanity.
Don't let others gaslight you into thinking this is an easy A class, exams were poorly written and averages were consistently low, literally have to dissect every lecture because you need to know every conceptual detail. Don't take if you don't have too! Avoid going insane.
Haters gon hate, Maxime is the goat. He truly cares about your learning, and the class is very structured and systematic. Midterms and Finals are a bit challenging, but hey, that's life. He gives EC quizzes (around three) randomly throughout the quarter, so attend lectures; it is for your benefit. At the end, you learn a lot, which is a win.
Pouokam is such a funny guy, loved his lectures! He also gave out in-class pop quizzes which counted as extra credit. Final was def harder than the midterms but it's not bad if you really understand the concepts. He also curved every single test, and I ended the class with a 105%. Just go to class and do the hw, its easy A
I think he's not good at explaining, but he's generally friendly and kind. Initially he said there would be no curve. However, he curved ultimately and my grade was raised by about 7%. Probably more than half of the class would have failed if he had not given a curve.
His exams was just a mess, a lot of homework, not an easy class a all!! go to class if you take it, lots of pop quiz.
Ruined my GPA. Your grade is literally based on the random people in your group and god forbid these people don't want to try your grade will suffer because of their actions. Take with literally any other prof its supposed to be an easy class too lmao.
BTW I took this course as a freshman with no stats experience, so my experience my be different. He is a decent professor as he provides students access to all the material for the course in the first week. Once we had the 3rd midterm and final the averages kept plummeting. He listens to what the students have to say and keeps everything in mind.
Please go to lecture, his extra credit saved me from an A-. Also his group projects can be frustrating because they're graded harshly, you lose a lot of points for minor details, and you work with randoms.
very funny prof and good lecturer. the project due dates were pretty tight and he contradicted himself sometimes but he was great overall and genuinely wanted us to succeed
Prof Poukam is strict but funny. Class concepts are difficult but lecture is very informative. Each midterm is paired with a project. Exam scores may be low but project definitely helps. Extra credit quizzes and curve helped a lot.
Terrible lecturer, continuously rambles, and is hard to understand. Homework is graded strictly. Difficult midterms with zero curves. Used to have a project for a final, but now it is a final exam.
Max is the goat. I've never submitted a rate my professor before but this guy is a legend. I've taken 3 of his classes and have learned so much. He's also pretty entertaining to listen to.
He's very unorganized and the projects/exams are kind of confusing and poorly written. That being said he records lectures and posts fairly detailed notes so it could be worse.
Super nice if you go to his office hours, and he has well-detailed notes. Practice exams are pretty similar to the tests, a few tricks thrown in there but if you study you'll be good.
I have mixed feelings about this class/professor, I have enjoyed the material at times and his lectures can be entertaining. However, the class can feel disorganized/unclear and the group projects can suck if you're put in a bad group. Also, I'm frustrated he hasn't given us really any way to practice post-midterm 2 material for the final.
Cool and funny guy but not a great teacher, just goes over prewritten lectures in class and doesn't use examples ever, only concepts. In the week leading up to the final he stopped responding to student questions on piazza which is honestly an extremely inconsiderate thing for a professor to do.
Bro is one of the less bad profs in the stats department. At least he has a sense of humor which some people find offensive which is why I think his ratings are low. He was pretty organized for STA 13 & 106 but for 104 he was all over the place. It's easy to get a B but not an A. You will probably pass but if you want an A you better start cracking
he's pretty cool and funny, sometimes lectures get boring and the hw can be a lot (esp since theres a textbook portion and a software/programming portion), but i didnt find the exams to be too difficult since the formula sheet was generous in terms of equations and tables and stuff. the software/programming part isnt tested on exams
Change syllabus final pre to exam. 5 HW with lots of work and grade strict. 2 midterm and 2 project with random. Practice not like real one, one of the most disgusting thing is that midterm give practice but final won't. All midterm over average and final over mean 13 point still no A. His pop quiz said gives extra but he won't. Just a joke, avoid
Not a bad professor, but my biggest criticism would be his accessibility on Piazza as he rarely responds to student's questions. Accessible during OH and will answer your questions. Midterms and final were not too difficult for the most part if you paid attention in class. Hands out pop quizzes for extra credit so try going to all his lectures!
20%HW 25%midterms 25%projects 30%final. Pop quizzes are for extra credits. Group projects grades depend on random people. Useful HW. Easy to pass. Hard to get A-, need lots of luck. He gives almost no review materials after midterm 2. Rude on Piazza cuz he expect you to know all logistics info in class. No curves in any form. Use ancient notes.
Homework was busy work but I think it was graded pretty leniently. For the R homework part, he gives you the code so u just needa plug and chug really. GO TO LECTURES HE GIVES EXTRA CREDIT!!!!!!!!! For exams- know the theory really well, pay attention to things he says during lecture.
He provides good lecture notes and resources in Piazza so that you can succeed in the class. 2 group projects, 2 midterms, 1 final. The tests were pretty easy. Class averages for the tests were in the B+ to A- range. Take his classes if you want an easy A.
