Really takes the time to ensure that students get the material. Putting forth the effort will result in an A.
Good explanations, makes sure she doesn't lose too many people before she continues
She makes sure that everyone understands before going on and is always open to answering questions
always willing to answer questions, very nice.
Very helpful teacher. Very clear. Highly suggest to take Calc 2 with her.
Good teacher. Makes sure everyone understands things before going on. Always willing to answer questions and wants students to succeed.
she is simply awesome...must say she one of the best math teachers ive had EVER...shes awesome...loved calc 2 with her...
Sometimes she goes really fast especially with difficult material. Not really bad, not really good either.
She was terrible at explaining stuff a few years ago. Heard she's gotten better, but dont know for sure. Asks if people understand and if they dont, she still moved on
Took the time to make it easier and clearer for someone who's strong point is not Math...
Good professor, very friendly and easy to understand. Do the suggested problems and use office hours...they can save you.
Very clear and organizes material very well. Also very reasonable about grading and preparing you for exams.
Her final was interesting. She tends to rip through difficult material and have no bearing on what the class sees as hard, even after using the placement exam. Willing to throw out points to make anyone pass; makes it harder to get the A though...
Very easy exams and no homeworks. Extremely clear in her teaching and very helpful in all aspects. Quite simply, TAKE CALC I AND II WITH HER!!! You won't regret it, trust me.
went so fast i had no clue what was going on the entire time. managed to get a D in her class after getting a B in calc I. couldn't understand a thing. go figure.
Decent lectures, fair exams and pretty fair homeworks. Doesn't tend focus on any particular thing for long. That helps sometimes but makes the class move really fast.
I had an A going into the final but she wouldn't give me one afterwards even though I was like .000001% from it. She's pretty easy to understand though, and does explain the topics pretty well.
Excellent.
Good teacher. Very clear. Easy as long as you study. I got A's all through the class then slacked off before the final and ended up with a B in the class (after spending 8 hours in the gateway to get a 10).
I repeated calc 2 and I understand this subject much better than the professor i had last year, heavily recommanded.
She makes everything seem easy when it isn't
Totally incompatible teaching style for me...I didn't understand a single thing she taught.
She's a good teacher- explains things clearly and gives good notes.
not a bad teacher, though if you miss one class you get screwed because she goes so fast. worth taking from her, her exams are awful though.
she is the best teacher I have had at RPI (not daying much b/c i am a freashmen) but she is really clear
Excellent teacher. Gave clear examples. Tests are no surprise. Moves at a good pace so you don't get bored and zone out. My advice don't skip class the day before an exam because she basicly goes over exactly what to study especially for the final.
good teacher, yea, go to class day before a test, she tells you what to study, not hard to get an A at all!
The class is very informative.
she cuts straight to the point with her notes
Teaches well!
She goes way too fast. I asked her questions about what I didn't understand, and she tried to help, but I didn't understand what she was saying. Maybe I'm too dumb. I have a D in there right now. I haven't gotten less than an A in math since probably sixth grade, if even then. I don't like it.
Had her both semesters, slept through class. Shes teaches very well, no HW, maple labs done in resus. and is very nice
Class was very organized, always knew what would be on our exams and quizzes, lectures very informative and useful.
Very nice... big class kind of hard to pay attention... but easy to get an A if you took calc before in high school
Good lecturer who can give you a lot of information very clearly. Lots of opportunities to do well in the class. Her only drawback is that she runs the Gateway, which is Satan's **** child risen on Earth. But besides that, highly recommended.
easy to get an A, just sort of pay attention and study what she tells you to. the only reason you should ever get less than an A is because of gateway
Had her for both Calc 1 and 2 and she tells you exactly what you need to know and how to do it. When you don't understand something in the class, she personally goes out of her way to make sure you understand it. Highly recommended, provided you get a good TA.
This class wasn't exactly easy...but Kiehl gave great notes and gave very fair tests. From what i hear about some other Calc II professors she is extremely good in comparison. I'd recomend her!
Excellent professor; lectures are clear, organized, and to the point. She teaches you what you need to know, and doesn't waste your time with anything else. Despite the fact that calc2 sucks, she did a great job teaching it, and it's fairly easy to get an A.
Excellent Calculus professor. Spells everything out for you and walks you through each type of problem. Extremely helpful and understanding.
She's great, easy, and nice!
Kiehl was a great prof. Her lectures were very clear and organized. She posts practice questions before each exam so you know exactly what you need to study. I would deffinitely recommend Kiehl as a prof.
Great teacher. Easy to understand and learn, and her tests are very easy. She's a nice person and cares about you understanding the material. If she isn't available she tries to have her TA be available so you always can get help.
She's such a boring teacher. I guess she's perfect for those who miss being in highschool. She's far too bureaucratic and uninspired. It's teachers like her that make learning seem like a painful process.
Easy class gives u all the problems on the test beforehand, if u know calc u should get an A pretty easy
Kiehl is totally uninspired and too bureaucratic. She acts like a highschool teacher and an overprotective, annoying mom. Has a quiz every week and FOUR midterms, one of which is a week before the final. She basically tells you the exam questions the day before and grades very leniently. Easy A, but you won't learn anything from her. Good luck!!!!!
Very good prof, clear, helpful, fun
Kiehl is fairly clear with teaching, but is on the easy side as far as exams go. There are quizzes every week, but it comes in handy with the basic skills stuff. One may or may not learn much, depends on how much effort is put into it.
This course is very easy, and everyone knows it. Don't tell your Calc 2-taking friends that you're in "Contemporary Math". But make sure you still give the assignments your best shot, or you *will* receive a bad grade. As for the professor, she's nice in and out of class, and in general cares more about the course than you probably will.
About as straightforward of a teaching style as you can get. Almost as good as Schmidt in terms of clarity and easy tests. She drastically narrows down for you what you need to study for the final. You won't learn how to do extremely difficult calculus problems, but you'll still leave with a good basic understanding.
awesome
Awesome. Maya Kiehl is the best teacher. Have her if you can!
Goes pretty fast and doesn't do much to explain the material. Pretty much pulls all of her lecture notes from the book. Will occasionally give helpful tips, but usually goes too fast for you to get all of them and the notes at the same time. I wouldn't recommend taking this course if you don't have a head for math.
She's an amazing prof. She goes fast and it's very easy to understand. Do the homework and do all the problems that she gives right before the exams. Easy A.
Posts practice problems on website that are identical (except #s used) to exam problems and tells you in lecture before exam exactly whats going to be on it
Had for calc 1 and 2. She covers more material than some of the other professors but she goes in to less detail and tells you exactly what is on the exams. Awesome teacher
Had her for both Calc I and II. Get her if you can. Ignore those who say she goes too fast, she doesn't at all. She tells you the exact kinds of problems that will be on the exams, gives study hints and problems, and explains things crystal-clear. I got an A in Calc II. Easy class, and she is easier to listen to and understand than most professors.
incompatible, goes too fast, does NOT explain herself ... leaves you in the dark; very difficult to wrap your arms around this teaching method
Very friendly, I attended most classes and she made an effort to learn my name. I would recommend her.
Great teacher! This course was easier than AP calc. Set up problems but do not solve. She went through everything very thoroughly even when kids asked dumb questions. You'll have to use maple for labs. Optional final. Easy A if you could handle AP calc.
She is really nice. The way she teaches her class is great. It is a very simple class and only requires out of class studying. Honestly, she does her part when it comes to teaching. I highly suggest going to office hours. This course is mostly memorization, but also about seeing proof processes. The best thing to do, is practice. Go to class!
She's probably the best professor I have this semester. She covers the material thoroughly in class but still finds time to explain things further if you have questions during lecture. There's never any HW but there are always optional practice problems online. We've had two tests so far and I felt very prepared for both.
She's an amazing professor and gives a ton of extra credit. Super easy if you go to lecture and do the homework. Tests are a lot easier than the homework
Calc 2 has changed its structure. There is in-class material and quizzes, as well as "skills" quizzes that cover material at a different pace (a little confusing). She teaches integration well and the quizzes were easy. Lines and planes were hard to understand. Does a lot of in class examples and is helpful during at office hours. Go to class!
Kiehl is definitely my favorite professor here. Concepts are explained extremely well, there's no homework, and tests are pretty easy (and there's a lot of extra credit). Kiehl often gives very big hints about what is going to be on the test and I always felt very prepared going into them. Kiehl is also very nice and helpful as a person.
She is a good teacher, and she is a nice teacher, but as a person she isn't so nice.
Professor Kiehl did a solid job teaching Calc II. Granted, the stuff can get terribly dry, but she teaches it, and won't leave you in the dark on anything. She also clearly explains how you will be tested, which is a +.
Amazing woman. Great teacher. Lessons are very clear and to the point. Come ready to take notes she doesn't pause. If you miss something notes are immediately posted online. Highly recommend.
She does a great job of explaining things and her test are really straight forward. She bases her test from hw problems in the textbook, so if you do your homework you'll have no problem acing the tests.
A well taught and well organized class. An enjoyable experience overall. A good teacher that I recommend.
Very kind professor who actually explains the material well in class. Course is very manageable if you stay on track and study at all.
The material can be challenging, but Kiehl structures the class in such a way that it is very difficult to do poorly. It's also refreshing to have a professor who happens to be a human being and not an academic robot.
Great Calc I professor. Easy Tests. Great notes, posted online
There extra credit quizzes that help boost your grade. She writes clearly all steps like a high school teacher. There are suggested homework problems and test problems to study. This is not mandatory to complete and it is not graded. Overall, one of the best math teacher I had in RPI.
Professor Kiehl is probably the best instructor for mathematics that I have ever had to this point in my life. She organizes her class lectures very well, and has a clear understanding of the course content. Professor Kiehl's class notes are also easy to follow along with, so if you study them for the tests, you will do well in the class.
I have her for Calc 2, and while my test average right now is an 88, my average in the class is just under a B, because the full-or-no credit skills quizzes are weighted so heavily. They're worth 20% and after our first test most people had a skills average under a 50% (myself included), and a 50% means a straight 10% loss from the final average.
Easy Calc I and II teacher
Took Kiehl for Calc 2 last semester. She was very clear in all her lectures and I understood all the material. Never opened my textbook the whole semester. She gives extra credit too. 1% on final grade for participate with I-Clicker. Great professor.
She's super nice and easy to talk to and has very clear expectations for every test. All you need to know is on her website, including all of the hand written lectures.
Easiest class I've taken, A+ without bonus quizzes. Great help if you have issue, which isn't likely
One of the best professors you will have. She has the best notes ever. Much better than the book.
Kiehl is the best technical lecturer I've had RPI. She takes amazing notes and posts them online. That came in clutch if I missed a lecture. I probably should have gone to class more as she gave iClicker questions, but even when I missed, I was alright because of her notes. She's amazing. I took Calc 1 & 2 with her and I highly recommend her!
Absolutely get her if you have the option
A lot of work from webassign but shes a really good lecturer and a sweetheart. She gives lots of examples for each topic. Only negative thing I have to say is that her handwriting is sometimes hard to read. Extra credit for getting iClicker questions correct in class
Kiehl is okay, though she's not particularly accessible outside class and isn't the best at explaining the material. She does care about how well you learn the material, but she's nothing special. The TA on the other hand... If Dan is still the TA when you want to take the class, avoid that section at all costs. He's awful and an awful grader.
Amazing clarity and depth in lectures; assigns a generous amount of homework, but specifies what parts to study for exams.
If you ask a question in class and don't understand it by the 2nd time she explains it she will condescendingly tell you that you're not doing it right & that you should get it. Takes points off of quizzes and homework but won't tell you the correct way to do it. 72 theorems & definitions must be memorized word for word..... that's just for Exam 1.
Gives relevant examples of material, along w/ examples found in the textbook. 50% of each test being multiple choice questions and definitions makes it easy to do well as long as you study and do the HW. HWs are pretty easy if you do the worksheets. Worksheets are pretty easy if you watch lectures and ask questions when confused.
Good Prof
Detailed and to-the-point lectures! Not the best at technology.
The flipped classroom is actually the most vile invention known to mankind. Having to watch lectures + do the HW outside of class created an immense amount of work given that the work done in class consisted of struggling through a worksheet whose answers were never posted and were therefore no help at all. Class was mandatory but a waste of time.
Her lectures are fine, except she chooses the most bright, hard-to-read colors to write notes with. If her color choices were more normal, I think I would've actually gone to class more often. Can sometimes be snappy if she's having a bad day, but otherwise a kind person and is concise in lecture.
If you're the type of person to go above and beyond you will love her. She provides a lot of example questions and lectures are detailed/well organized. I didn't go to lectures because I already took calc I. You should go to lecture to know how she wants you to write your exam answers otherwise you could lose points. Personality is strict.
She is a good professor overall. I found some of the lectures long and boring especially towards the end but, I learned the material well and her notes were very useful.
Her class is structured such that you watch the lecture before the in-person session and then do a worksheet. It's more work, but you're guaranteed to learn the material. I found learning under her to be an extremely pleasant and inspiring experience. I highly recommend taking a class with her if you get the chance.
The lectures could get boring at times, but overall I think she is a great professor. She covered everything in depth, I thought the tests were fair, and she gave good feedback on work. She does have a low tolerance for disrupting class though, so if you're going to talk or sit on your phone, she might give you a hard time.
Not accessible outside of class and will ignore emails. Rude and condescending in class. In the first class I attended with her she publicly humiliated someone for asking a clarifying question. As someone with anxiety, it sucks that she yells when she proctors tests making it harder to focus. The actual class material is not difficult.
Professor Kiehl did an amazing job teaching Calculus. It certainly helped to have a little background but calculus can be confusing for many.
All I can say is that in my opinion Dr. Kiehl was a really hard Calculus professor. I swear some of the exam versions are harder than the others and the TAs are told not to give brownie points for showing work. Calc 2 is hard enough as it is, so if you're looking for extra credit take another prof.
She was pretty good, I liked her teaching style. My main problem was that notes and homework were not posted in a timely fashion and sometimes I was surprised with homework. Overall, I liked her and her class.
Dr. Kiehl made Calculus I a very enjoyable experience. I am absolutely horrible at math, but her exams were very fair and she was always willing to stay after lecture to explain topics to confused students. She hosts exam reviews one week in advance of exams, and exam questions are usually similar to the ones shown in the review.
Does a lot of example problems during lectures and typically does a good job explaining the content. Her tests do tend to be a bit more difficult than other professors but if you find a good way to study or have taken calc before they are fine. Is very kind and great to go to with questions during office hours and review sessions.
Professor Kiehl lessons are quite good, she can move very fast throughout the lectures. Kiehl is one of those professors who tends to want to make there lessons perfect. In my opinion, I don't know if it was just me, but she seemed really unapproachable and unfriendly, to the point where you couldn't ask her anything without feeling stupid.
Mathematics has always been my favorite subject and my strongest suit, until I had class with this professor. I hated each single class. She scolds people very harshly and is very strict, and she makes you feel stupid by answering your question and staring at you. I did not have a fun experience, and her exams are the hardest of them all.
Dr. Kiehl is a wonderful professor. She knows exactly what she expects from her students and makes that very clear in lecture. She may seem impersonal during the class but she is extremely kind and helpful during her office hours. Would definitely take a course with her again if I could!
Her notes are very easy to read and look back on. Some lectures are heavier than other and the only downside is that she will just power through the heavy lectures and cram it all into the 2 hours of class. She tries her best to answer your question during/after class. Fairly easy class and also easy to find her back exams.
Dr.Kiehl is a very good professor, she is not harsh on grading, and if you ask her questions she answers them to the best of her abilities and if she can't then she will find the answer for you.
It really feels like Dr. Kiehl wants you to do well in her class. If you put in the effort to do the homework and go to office hours you will do well. The material can be difficult but her grading system gives room for mistakes. She is great at explaining concepts if you ask for help and ask questions. Highly recommend!
Professor Kiehl easily had the best lectures out of my freshman classes. Tests offered a lot of partial credit on open-ended problems, and homework was given via Achieve, allowing you ten attempts to correctly answer each question.
Good notes and clear grading criteria. Fair exams, homework's and presentations. Feedback on assignments is good, and provides hints/steps for proofs. Grading tends to be nitpicky, but that's just the nature of the course. Solid professor.
Dr. Kiehl is the only reason I passed Calc I&II. I came from a school with a severely lacking curriculum and students and teachers who didn't care--I was far behind from the start. If you reach out to her for help, you'll immediately see her clear care for her students. I don't think there is any RPI math professor more understanding than she is.
I like Kiehl. Grading can be quite pedantic but for the most part exams and homeworks were fair. Never had much of an issue with her for this course.
Dr. Kiehl is very knowledgable, offers great notes during classes. Great lecturer, goes really slow on concepts and break down everything in details. She does not have regular OHs but you can always book appointments with her, she offers great help on HW probs and exam prep. Most back exams at APO are from her class so use those to study!
Amazing teacher and one of the few teachers at RPI that I admire. Her lectures give a lot of examples that really help you out during the exams. She was very caring and considerate to me when I was having family issues; she seemed like she actually cared about her students. I would love to take other classes with her.
Very rough professor. She is very passive agressive with student. Not clear of what she wants on the test. Examples are terrible
Professor Kiehl's lectures can be fast-paced, but engaging if you stay focused. While she can seem unapproachable at times, unstuck AI proved helpful for supplementary practice and reinforcing concepts outside of class.
Lectures optional, but you should go. She teaches very efficiently and explains things well. Homework 2x a week. There's graded online work and then unchecked textbook work that she says is mandatory, but don't do it. Instead, use it to study for the test because there aren't any back exams. Tests are easier than the HW; there aren't any tricks
A great professor, Dr Kiehl makes her lectures thick with content. A little too thick for me, but she does a great job at teaching the material as the semester goes on. 4 Exams is a little much, giving you about three weeks between each at best. Definitely one of the easier classes.
The exams were fair, with partial credit questions. The course was organized and predictable. The lectures were content-heavy and not very helpful. Students can be passive-aggressive when answering questions. Homework (15% of the grade) was an easy A with multiple attempts and dropped scores. Your lowest exam score is dropped.
Dr. Kiehl is a great lecturer, but her office hours are what really made me like her as a professor. She is extremely helpful one-on-one. In class she can seem intimidating but during office hours she is very respectful. The work can be a lot since there's homework and a quiz every week but overall it's not super difficult. Her exams are very fair.
Very in depth and easy to understand lectures. Her tests make sure you understand the concepts and are mixed with true/false, multiple select, multiple choice, and open ended so that you can make up your points somewhere. Would definitely recommend!
I pay so much in tuition, yet ended up with a professor who couldn't explain the material or grade fairly. Lectures were confusing, feedback was meaningless, and effort didn't matter. I've learned almost nothing. It's unacceptable for a required course to be taught like this.
- Overall, she's not a terrible lecturer, the lectures are just extremely fast paced and not clear at times. - The exams are incredibly fair, just long. Quizzes are also quite fair, just nitpicky, but homeworks were graded with the most nitpicky-ness though. - During class, she will call on students and then berate them for not knowing the answer.
