Not a very good prof... heard bad rumors about her loosing exams too.
I hated physics, but I thought she was a pretty good prof. Her notes are excellent and easy to understand. Her exams are easy if you studied the material. She made this class bearable for me!! =)
Cares a great deal about the quality/quantity of lecture notes and assignments. Very helpful and polite.
just venting.....i hate this class
Don't take this course for an elective. she loses assignments and exams!! and doesn't give the benefit of the doubt!!! assignments are easy but the marking is brutal. Exams are okay. This course is interesting but not a course to take for an elective, choose another course!!!!
She's very clear and absolutely willing to answer questions. I hate and can't do physics, but I did reasonably well because of her teaching and evaluation. Definitely recommend this prof.
Great Prof, easy class. If you go to class and pay attention you will ace the exams.
Amzing prof. Good notes and helpful assignments. Exams are exactly like the homework. Exams based on lectures but you can get MOST of the material from the text.
She explains concepts well, and her notes are really good. Her exams can be tricky, though.
Worst prof ever. She actaully got mad at a kid for asking a question in class. She doesn't give you breaks on anything either. I don't know who the lucky guy was who got his homework ommitted, but she would never do that for my class. She's terrible.
Clear explanations & good notes, but the eg's she teaches are WAY easier than the HW q's and even easier than her near impossible exams. In a class where there were at least 15 students whom I knew had 4.0's and were great at physics, the class avg. for the m/t was in the mid 50's. True, it was her first time teaching this course, but still...
She emphasizes conceptual ideas A LOT! Know the theories behind all the formulas and that will save you on exams since there's lots of integration of ideas. Class examples are much easier than her homework and exams. Just make sure you know your stuff because her classes tend to do really well. Try a midterm average of 73%.
As far as Wheelock goes as a teacher she was great, good notes, good explanations, and helpful in office hours.. but physics can be hard for a lot of ppl. her exams are somewhat tricky, KNOW theory inside out and u should do well. also do practice finals to practice, cuz the text q's are nothing like the exam q's
Really good explainer. Gave easy exam so average was high and hard to get on the top of the curve.
Great prof. She's very clear and she has a lot of demos that will help illustrate difficult concepts. I highly recommend taking her physics class, even if you're only marginally interested.
I was considering going into Physics before taking her course, now I'm glad to be done. Terrible notes and tough assignments that are not worth much or relevant to the test. I got marks removed on a test question where I got the right answer because I had done it "conceptually wrong". Not helpful and ugly curve, a 90% got me an A-. Worst class yet.
Maybe for 126 she was good, but she was TERRIBLE for 124. Assignments were so hard, made us thing, but yet were not tested come exam time. VERY hard final. The best part about this class was the Grad student who came in to teach for a class. stay away if you want a decent mark in this class.
Lecture sometimes a little scattered. Good demos! Should have more, tho. Very good conceptual explainer! Pay attention to concepts in class because they will show up on the test.
Awesome prof. Assignments prepare you well for exams. Look over web examples to do really well on finals. Everyone does so well in her class its hard to get the A.
Fun class. More math than I thought, but the exapmles make it easy.
Well prepared notes, covers material at good speed.
good class
My favorit class. Don't bother with the textbook, it's all the notes. Posts notes on line, but its not everything.
If you want to learn about the planets and the solar system. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It is merely a physics class with examples related to astronomy. You learn about the planets and other bodies in the solar system, but ARE NOT TESTED ON IT! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. TAKE EAS 206 instead!!!
Maybe you din't but I learned a great deal about the planets. Well organizes, interesting, impressive knowledge.
Good intro course, about what I expected for a 100 level. The only thing that sucks about first year courses is that there are first years in them. She did a pretty good job of dealing with the disruptive kids... assignments and exams were clear and pretty easy too.
She explains concepts well and gives really good homework questions with a lot of hints, but the class average was so freakin' HIGH!!! I'd rather sit thru a boring prof than to work like a slave and still only get an A-!!
Rude, unapproachable, unclear, and wants all students to have an instantaneous understanding of course material and if not deal with it.
I've taken 3 different classes of hers, and each one was great. She's an excellent prof. Explains things clearly and at a reasonble speed (although somewhat slow at times). Exams are easy, since class and assignments prepare you well for them.
Maya Wheelock is absolutely outstanding! I completely hated physics before, and she actually made the subject interesting for me. I left lectures with understanding rather than confusion, and her assignments aren't designed to eliminate everyone who is not a physics genius! She is also extremely helpful. She's the best prof I have ever had so far.
Maya is a good prof, no problems at all with her. I suggest taking Astro 120 with her.
She's not the greatest prof on campus. There were a few topics she didn't really teach properly and she does almost no examples in class.
Very organised and clear. All powerpoint slides used in class were on the internet, which was very helpful. The textbook was only about 10% math but the midterm was much more based on math than theory. The final was fair (very similar to the practice final posted... a few questions were the same). Helpful with questions. Interesting, easy material.
An okay course. The material is interesting and all of the lecture notes are posted online. Be sure to attend the lectures; she expands on those notes a lot. Not recommended if you're bad in math; the first half of the course is a lot of physics background - lots of math and equations. She does some examples but it's still sometimes hard to grasp.
The course starts out quite easy but gets significantly harder with the memorization of random planetary facts, and this is reflected in the exam. The prof is very organized but not so intriguing.
Maya was a great physics prof. she did lots of interesting demonstrations to help get concepts across. her assignments were a bit challenging. overall very clear explanations and very helpful. good class.
Pretty good prof. Seemed to get sidetracked on stuff that wasn't important. We spent 2 lectures on Craters and they weren't touched on the exams. Loved her assignments, extremely helpful and representitive on what was to come on the exams.
Wheelock is OK.. just OK. Not spectacular or awful. Tests are 'classic first year' exams: no emphasis on material emphasized in lecture and meant to trick you in a limited amount of time. Watch out for the final, only 2 hours and around 20 questions. As usual, labs are a waste of time.
Horrible notes and covers major concepts in little detail and expects you to be able to apply this to difficult questions. Extremely boring. Probably the worst prof I've had so far.
Probably as good of a Physics prof you can get. It really wasn't THAT hard of a class if you showed up . There aren't any surprises in her exams, 95% of her tests are from material from lecture notes and assignments.
Her lectures leave something to be desired. It is difficult to pay attention and sometimes she spins her wheels with stuff that doesn't need that much elaboration. The course set-up outside lectures was great. The notes, assignments and tests I couldn't be more happy with.
nice person but her class was monotonous and she had difficulty in keeping the first years in line. Exams were somewhat difficult. Take it if you have to but try for another prof.
Okay anyone who says that her lectures don't make sense is honestly not trying. She used great examples/demos/calculated examples to get her point across. Also, the assigned homework really helped; you need to practice this stuff. Recommended.
I could not stay awake in class to save my life! She made an interesting class super boring. The assignments were easy and the midterm was fair. She was interesting only when the powerpoint was not used. The powerpoint is pretty comprehensive, I barely took notes all semester.
Excellent prof, made good use of class time and had clear notes for studying. Assignments were helpful for exams, and the exams were fair. She did her best to help students during office hours, and seems to care a lot about how her students are finding the course. Overall, awesome prof.
boring lecturer, extremely easy class. easy assignments, easy exams. i wouldn't avoid her in the future. she really REALLY over explains things, even things you might consider common knowledge. some may say this is super helpful, but to me it was really boring
Her notes are horrible and her lectures are terribly boring. Really bad at explaining concepts.
I had Maya for both 124 and 126. Her notes are fantastic. Midterms are quite rushed (but fair) and I found myself making silly errors. I did much better in 126. Maya is extremely helpful and kind in person - I would definitely recommend seeing her during office hours to get extra help. Attending class is crucial to get the notes and see the demos.
Wheelock is a superior prof. It is a privilege to have an instructor so devoted and proficient. Manages to simplify fiendishly complicated concepts and mathematical nightmares =.= Her exams are straightforward and comparable to the homework assignments. This prof takes care of her students!
She's a good professor and is solid at explaining concepts, but this class is way too demanding. For a student entering their first year, this is a class that can completely rob you of your ambition. It's brutally hard. I did quite well though, but still it was tough.
I took her for both 124/126. Midterms are brutal! they don't give you enough time at all. the assignments are ridiculous, i needed help from my engineering dad & we would spend 10+hrs working on them each week! WASTE OF TIME! avoid her if you want to spend time studying other subjects
The material was easy, which tended to unmotivate many students. Her notes were fine, so were her tests, but I found it difficult to approach her.
Good prof, homework and assignments are pretty easy. Midterm and Final are decent if you studied.
Best physics class ever! Interesting stuff, relevant to the real world. Unlike my previous physics classes. Just demanding enough to keep me on my toes, but not ridiculous, only 6 assignments and you get to drop one. Exams fair. Recommended.
The lectures were interesting, and a bit easier on the details than the textbook. The homework assignments are not hard and solidify what you're learning. The midterms and the exam are pretty straight-forward, as there's no real surprises. I found the course not mathemically rigorous enough, though, but that's just the introductory nature of it.
Overall, pretty good. Assignments were a breeze, and the midterm was fairly easy as well. The final was more challenging (read: less math and more memorization about gas giant moons) even after she said to just know basic trends about them. However, other than the moons, most of the material seemed very easy to pick up.
Sic prof she helps you when you need it, is very clear when does help and always goes slow enough In the lectures for people to understand the only thing I recommend is review each lecture daily and do tons of practice questions you will get an A
She explains everything incredibly clearly. You could have no physics background and understand with the way she explains everything step by step. She is also incredibly caring about you and your mark and is always available for help and does everything in the best interests of the student. Her exams are also very straight fwd. Enjoy.
i really dislike this condescending woman. I did fine in the class though. I just wish she was less uptight during her lectures and a little laid back. She is OK at teaching. nothing special. Hard exams.
OK prof, decent explanations...seemed almost intimidated by a large class, so was very uptight during the lectures. Watch out for the curve though. 89 gets an A-? ridiculous
I agree that she seemed a bit uptight during the lectures, and also kind of awkward. But she was helpful during her office hours, which was nice. Exams were fair; I'd recommend taking physics during the spring semester if possible (I took 124 during fall and it was absolutely brutal).
Nice lady. Helpful during office hours. Sometimes unclear when she explained stuff. If you struggle in physics, her class isn't the best. I struggled and got a passing grade. not the greatest grade. For her class you have to put the effort and hours into it if you really struggle at it.
Good teacher, not good curve. My smooth sailin 4.0 hit a wall. Overall course is good, maya is nice, test difficulty range from fair to insanely ridiculous. I would suggest takin for those that need to just pass she rarely hands out D or below, A's are difficult too. I am majoring in physical sciences with physics courses but this course was wierd
I agree with comment above me. I was not able to get my A despite my long nights of studying for this class, way to many B+ grades given out, I think only 2 or 3 A's in total which sounds about right since we only had class size of 70.
What a great prof! Finally someone who really cares about student success. Always available to talk after class/ at office hours. She has very in depth knowledge in this area and I would absolutely recommend her! Fair exams, not too hard overall. A great science elective with no lab, and an awesome prof? It doesn't get much better than this!
Enjoyable and interesting lectures. Maya is much more comfortable in a small class setting. Don't judge her based on your experience with larger classes, she's delightful in this type of setting and she really knows her material. Assignments and tests were all very reasonable in terms of difficulty
Maya is an amazing lecturer. She talks in a way that keeps you listening. You need to attend every class and if you miss one be sure to find a class buddy to bum notes off of. Assignments are easy to complete and she is always willing to meet with you and to answer questions. Exams are moderate-read textbook/notes and do practice exams to do well
Easy course and good prof. Didn't really need the textbook. Just get the notes, do the assignments, and the exams are simple.
Great professor, very interested in the subject herself and makes in interesting for us.
Her notes is a mystery.
Really liked her, knows how to break down concepts well. Notes give good indication of how well you need to know the material. Study the practice problems (on the worksheets) and the practice exams and her exams will be fine.
Sometimes hard to stay awake, but her examples taught exactly what's needed to do well on exams.
I dont know about other classes she teaches but most of the people I know all agree that her class is pretty useless to go to. She teaches really slowly. We barely cover the theory in class, usually an example every 3 classes. examples are very basic and don't help with any of the difficult online questions. go home with 6 equations out of the book
She's a really awesome prof. in class she seems quite strict, she really doesn't like people talking, but she is amazing. Her notes are very very clear. She explains the concept so well that I am rarely left with questions. If you go to her office during office hours she is extremely helpful and kind. I highly suggest going her class.
Good quality lectures.
She's an okay prof. Not the best, not the worst. She makes mistakes in her lecture notes, be careful.
Hardly any examples. Very boring. Absolutely need the textbook to understand whats going on.
There was no reason to attend class, she tried to show too much proof, BORING, and you must be able to understand the textbook alone to get a good mark with her.
Very good prof. Every time she gave an explanation, I was able to grasp a good understanding without needing further help. If you didn't like her, its because you weren't trying hard enough in her class. The few times I had questions to ask I went to visit her office and she was even better one-on-one than in the classroom. Highly recommended.
Likes to repeat things, homework assignments are extremely difficult if you struggle in physics. Need to read the textbook just to understand what is going on. Avoid if possible.
I found PHYS 126 to be much easier to understand/work through than PHYS 124. Dr. Wheelock is quite a good professor. She explains concepts clearly and her exams are EXTREMELY fair as she tests concepts that are focused on in lectures/assignments. I would highly recommend her!
Clearly knows the subject but she seems nervous during class. But other than that, definitely take her class. She explains concepts thoroughly (but sometimes she just repeats and spends a long time on simple concepts). Her homework and exams aren't impossible like the other physics profs. Shows a lot of untestable theory for interest sake.
Her lectures were fine but the averages on the midterms and final were extremely high for physics which means I didn't do great. Average on the final was a mid 70.
Wheelock was a pretty good lecturer, and you must go to lecture to get her supplementary notes. However, she would refuse to answer my emails, and I WANT MY EMAILS ANSWERED. Quizzes weren't as bad as others say, some were tough but all doable. Tests were extremely fair, final was simple!
Wheelock is a very good professor. Her notes aren't the best, but they are decent. She explains the material well, and the biggest thing: Her exams are very fair unlike other Physics profs. Put in some effort, and you should do good.
ROOOOOLOCK reminds me of a kangaroo out and about in the australian outback. Now to the point, nearly every class you will spend the first 20 minutes of class talking about Wiley Plus. Then next 20 minutes she will ramble on about someones birthday, ultimately leaving you with 10 minutes of class where she goes over the derivation of an equation.
Good prof with a good teaching style. "Good" is basically my summary of the Wheelock. Good on all respects but never great.
Seriously doesn't like any sort of chatting in lecture. Also does demos which are probably one visible to the front row because she can't properly use the cameras in the room. If you take her class, do not do her practice midterm or final. They are nothing like the exams, you will be blind-sided come exam day
She is very easily angered by students coming to the wrong class, and she spends mostly all class doing proofs and derivations of formulas, without any examples until near the end of the course. The practice midterm and final were useless, because the questions are identical to the homework, but nothing like the exams.
Well prepared for class, demonstrates important concepts and really hammer them into your head. Her lectures are concise, to the point, which makes her notes super helpful when you're studying for your midterm or final and you're trying to save time. One of my favorite profs.
Pretty good prof, you cannot go wrong with her. Notes are very clear to follow and although she may not use her time in the lecture very effectively, I could understand the course material almost all of the time. Textbook also helped alot near the end of the course!
Great Prof!
Very good at explaining topics. DO THE HOMEWORK AND THEN SOME! Do that and don't sleep in her class and you'll do swell.
Maya is a good prof- its the CLASS you must worry about, the assignments are only 1-2% each which makes it hard to actually sit down and do them, but this is my biggest regret. Go sit in the help office in CCIS L2 and DO THEM!! They help you actually understand the material. Exams are fair.
Amazing prof. She explains concepts so well, and in such a logical manner during class that it's easy to understand. Her assignments and midterms are SO fair, and only test concepts she covers in class or on assignments. I failed every midterm and the final in meldrums 124, but my average went up over 20% taking wheelock!
Awesome at explaining concepts and her exams are very fair. However, attending lectures is a must because her posted notes are useless unless you're able to add to them. She is also very unwilling to put in extra effort to help her students. But her enthusiasm towards the subjects (although annoying at times) helps you stay interested during class.
She's ok. Her notes are very good, neat and consistent. It's kind of easy to tone her out after a while though. She's hard to talk to one on one, it's kind of a mixture of her being awkward and a little bit mean. Learn it in class or don't learn it.
Seems enthusiastic enough, assignments and tests are challenging but fair. Not very helpful. The one time I needed her help with a problem she responded two days after the assignment was due and told me to talk to another student, jokes on her though, I don't talk to anyone in my classes.
She was a good prof... Her explanations were clear, and made the course bearable. The labs sucked sooo much though. Her exams were fair if you did the HW, but were not out of many marks so 1 wrong really costs you. High averages! Angel compared to Meldrum though!
Explains things fairly well, spends a LOT of time on derivations though! Homework is really fair and exams are really fair, but average was really high (74% on the final!).
The average for the class is 75%. The average GPA is 2.64. Thats all I have to say.
She speaks clearly and is enthusiastic about physics but I don't find her that likeable. She spends too long on some sections but not others. Her exams are easy and fair but watch out for the high average. Nothing to worry about if you end up in her section. Show up to lectures and take down her notes.
I absolutely loved her. Her notes and explanations in class were crystal clear. She doesn't put the notes on eclass so attendance is mandatory. Exams were very fair and similar to the homework. Recommended!
Wheelock was a great prof for Physics. Easy, extremely fair, slow in class, nice during office hours. She was also enthusiastic and made Physics easy and fun. Not hard at all to do well in this course, even if you aren't good at Physics.
Dr. Wheelock is a really good prof. I wasn't really good at physics but if you study her notes, do the homework, and ask her anything you dont understand (from her notes!), you will do well. She doesnt help with homework, but that's what the TA's are for! Textbook was pretty good but if you understand her notes you will get 100%
Dr. Wheelock is such a sweet lady. She is an angel compared to all the 124 profs. She is organized, helpful, caring and clear in her explanations. I am VERY VERY bad at physics and I find Wheelock's exams manageable. They are quite challenging but fair. TAKE HER IF YOU CAN.
Easy to understand in class, she got flustered sometimes but other than that taught the material properly and in a clear way not missing important parts. Went through step by step but it wasn't tedious.
Excellent prof considering first year physics sucks. Her tests were always fair bordering on easy (I bombed the second midterm just by misreading things like "rank from highest to lowest") She loves tricks like that, so watch out. Also she likes "none of the above" as an answer on test more than any other prof i've had. BRUTAL labs though
Loved how quickly anything got marked. In lecture she goes through tons of examples, and helps you understand upcoming homework questions. She was great
Good class, great instructor. Maya makes physics (fairly) easy - super good at explaining things clearly, showing up to class is important. Assignments are straight forward, nicely spaced apart, all directly related to the one midterm and final. Highly recommend this teacher for any physics class.
Really sweet lady. Reasonable exams. A little bit of a dry lecturer, but not too bad. Would definitely recommend wheelock for any physics or astro courses with her.
Good prof, has good notes, good lectures. She points out the important concepts.
Wheelock is a nice lady, however her tests and homework assignments are nothing like the examples she does in class. Her tests are probably the hardest tests I've seen so far. She knows what she's talking about, but says things 5 different ways so it can get confusing.
Maya refused to help me after class when i was trying to understand how she did something in class. Rude to me on multiple occasions.
Physics 126 is much easier than 124. I wouldn't say Wheelock's class is fun, but she still delivers the content. If you can do all of her homework and do extra practice from the exam registry, you can easily ace her exams and beat the curve. Her questions on the final in particular were very straightforward. Doesn't post written notes online!
She has a super screechy voice so it can get a little bit annoying but her notes are pretty good. Exams are considerably fair I would say.
She is a very effective lecturer. Everything was explained nice and clear. Homework was really short and easy, yet helpful for the exams. Exams were extremely fair (but not necessarily easy). Surprisingly, this class was way easier than 124. Long story short, do take a class with her.
Made simple concepts complicated. I asked other profs for help the entire semester! Atrocious!
Really good professor... . Labs for 126 are not fun though...
Unlike the others, I found Phys 126 much harder than Phys 124 (in terms of lab and coursework). Those taking Phys 126 during Spring with her should be prepared to keep up with the fast pace. It is really easy to fall behind on the material. Overall, she was a really effective & clear professor. Her tests were okay, but midterm average was very low.
She makes the easy concepts super complicated and spends way too much time on them, and then just skims by the hard stuff that she actually tests you on. I would suggest getting a textbook because you'll need it in order to understand the course material. Her tests are super long for the amount of time you get, and I found her to be demeaning.
I had her for 126 and was really excited for 261. You get to know her on a bit of a personal level in 261 and she's actually quite rude. I thought that class was badly formatted with a heavily weighted midterm and final- i.e. no way to save your grade. She's an effective lecturer and the class is interesting.
Wheelock is very clear with her explanations. Great teacher and even more helpful when its one on one. But her tests are quite tricky, you really have to pay attention to the wording because she loves playing around with it.
Her notes are extremely clear and are great for studying, She clearly has an inner passion to teach the course and it radiates to everyone in the lecture room. If you go to class and write notes, you'll do well on the exams. Overall, i Definitely recommend.
Does examples thats not relevant to any homework or an exam, and students gets wrecked by them because she doesn't do any questions thats challenging very straight forward. And doesn't post anything on eclass, because attendance is mandatory and we are still in high school
Really enjoyed this course and professor. She had a good way of explaining challenging concepts in an easy way. Brought good demonstrations into class and gives good examples that are relevant to test material.
Her notes and explanations in class are great. The only problem is actually going to her for help. She is a very intimidating person. In lecture, she cares about the students success in the course, but she can be very rude individually. This was difficult for me as I like to get help one on one from professors, but felt stupid asking for help.
Definitely took this class expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised. The PHYS126 labs were easier than PHYS124, and the tutorials were mark boosters. The course material was harder than PHYS124 and a lot more conceptual. Tricky questions on the final but fair. Homework is doable! Make sure to do the sample practice exams!
Her notes were useless and she made easy concepts way harder to learn.
Glad that class was over! Worst professor, do not take physics with her!!... Her notes are not helpful at all. I had to ask physics help from another prof.
Applying her notes to the problems on tests were really difficult.
She should explain concepts more clearly! But she doesn't!!! The tests are completely different from the notes and are useless! I suggest finding another professor to teach physics, because this class was such a waste of time. If you are taking her class, than I suggest you buy a text book and study off of that!
Examples in class do not help you with studying... Wouldn't take any class with her again!
Her lectures and notes are clear, except she does move through the powerpoints quickly. Only an outline of the notes are posted online so you pretty much have to attend class unless you want to teach yourself from the textbook. The midterms and the final are pretty easy if you actually bother to study.
Maya was a one of the best physics teachers or profs I've had. However often I found that she went over simple concepts in painful detail and just breezed over more difficult ones. Exams were all multiple choice, midterms were reasonable. The final was 37 questions so it was pretty long for the time given. Watch out for sneaky questions.
The course overall was pretty hard but her notes along with the textbook did a pretty good job. Her exams can be really hard and the conceptual questions can be tricky. If you do the homework and study it is reasonable. The tutorials and labs were kinda hard but could be grade boosters if you tried.
Worst physics class I have ever taken. I like physics but this class made me hate it! Do not take this class!
I really liked Maya! I was good at physics in high school but university physics hit me harder than I expected. Maya is a really good lecturer and she is SUPER organized. She is super helpful during her office hours and really nice. Weekly homework that is tough but not worth a lot but it prepares you so well for tests so memorize it.
Not hard course, but rude prof.
Maya has tricky tests. Just because they have less calculations does not make them any easier. Her theory is very involved. Some of her homework questions are also difficult, but luckily she answers her emails. Her final exam was difficult, much more difficult than her midterms. She does not spend time on difficult concepts in class.
After nearly failing PHYS 124, I was dreading taking PHYS 126. It turned out I did not have to be so afraid, though, because Dr. Wheelock made it very easy to understand by explaining most concepts multiple times. Also, PHYS 126 is pretty interesting and Maya is very enthusiastic about the course, which made her class pretty enjoyable.
Her notes are hard to study off of... the tests are way more difficult than the actual practice questions she assigns. If you want a good GPA avoid her class! Really disappointed and such a waste of money!!!
Bad prof. Had trouble following her train of thought and was too distracted by the huge gap in her teeth. She wore a stupid red tuque that also really bothered me. She expects you to have read the textbook prior to the lecture (But doesn't assign any readings) and so I felt like she flew through her lectures.
Bad prof. Very hard to follow. Train of thought is all over the place. Puts you to sleep and has a monotonic voice. Doesn't teach anything and gets you to watch videos before class to learn everything and she just repeats what was said on the very basic videos.
She's really good at explaining things but her notes often have errors, you have to read the textbook or you'll get mixed up.
Overall a pretty good instructor, though the notes were not always super specific and the lectures were a bit too condensed/rushed, but she provided great explanations of concepts during class
Lectures were rushed, notes can barely be considered notes. She also ends every single sentence with "mmkay" so you'll want to rip your ears out by the end of the semester lmao
PHYS261 has potential to be a great class but at the end I felt let down. Maya introduces topics and concepts, then skims over the application and spends most of her time talking about energy conservation etc, which isn't applicable to exams at all. Attendance is practically mandatory as no notes on eClass and no formula sheet for exams.
She was very unsure of herself when teaching, constantly saying "umm", and at times she was condescending. I would not recommend.
IdK why there are so many haters here but she is a good prof, her notes are easy to follow and explained the examples really well. Although she is a little condescending at times. But i didnt like the fact that we had to read the textbook and watch videos before the lectures, during the weekend, i found that helpful but quite annoying
Anyone who complains about wheelock's taching hasn't sat through the bland monotone lectures that most of the physics faculty supplies. She brings life to the subject and is passionate about physics. She mostly does examples that are relevant and help with homework and exams. Midterm is killer if you haven't mastered the equations.
Dr. Wheelock isn't a bad professor but she is so rude! She is super condescending. I find it ironic how she treats students when we are partly the reason she has a job. If you are already unsure of a physics concept, going and talking to her will only make you feel worse! She should work on being more polite and respectful.... Yikes!
Hated this class. Don't take physics with this professor. Her notes don't help at all.
Worst physics prof for physics, avoid at all costs! The only useful resource is the textbook not this professor!!!
Y'all complaining about her below clearly haven't learned the concept fully. She made the class so easy and her practice exams were identical in format/style of questions so exams should not have been an issue if you concentrate during lectures and invested time in it. Did not use the textbook even once.
I took this class in my second year, and this was the hardest course that I took for that year. This was because as I have found out, she cares about concepts so much, and on her tests, the conceptual questions are weighted 50/50 with quantitative questions or even more. I feel Dr. wheelock definitely made this course harder than it should.
Definitely a challenging course if you dont put in the effort! Don't underestimate the midterm exam although it only tests Kinematics and a bit of Dynamics! The questions are still difficult! Do the practice questions and seminars over before the exams and study the theory well so you can apply it to any question! KNOW THE FORMULA SHEET WELL!
She make us watch all the video from Roger Moore, which is really confusing. And before all the topics, she make us do the pre lecture homework just by watching the videos. Personally found this very tough. Sometimes still cant do the question after watching the 20 minutes 4 times. I also had quite a bit of trouble understanding her lectures.
Decent prof, but the midterm was absolutely insane, much harder than other profs for the course. This prepares you for the final, however, it also hurts your grade. Lectures are extremely fast paced, don't go into enough depth in each topic to truly understand, also, math background (Differential equations) is missing when you take this course.
Dr. Wheelock is a solid professor. She is clear and thorough in her examples. The course content was tough, and the exam questions reflected that. She had weekly online homework which made up 5% of the total grade. I found it equal in difficulty to the exams, if not a bit harder. The lab component of the course was about equal difficulty to 124.
I found her to be the rudest prof EVER. She went crazy one day in class over some people trying to present before class. Hated her teaching style, hated her homework, also hated physics but anyway, wouldn't retake her EVER
She is a pure educator. Don't mind her rating here as it is based on the marks they received. Physics classes are challenging because there are many abstract concepts we are expected to learn in a very short period of time. Good thing about her is that she goes out of her way to simplify them so they can be understood in under 50 min.
Good luck asking her a question in class. She will not answer you and will direct you to her notes, half of which you missed because of her fast pace. Also, she posts the notes at the end of the week, meaning that they cant be used to help on the assignments. Also, there is new HW for the next week so you don't have time to open those notes anyways
I like Maya. Assignments every week, sometimes can be really hard, but her exams are doable. She goes slowly in class, and she brings the TA's to us, which is really nice since we are so busy. Lectures are easy to understand, easy to follow. She posts her notes online so you can study from them.
Had her as for PHYS 130 and she was a really good prof. You need to pay attention in lectures but that's standard anyways. Her weekly assignments are reasonable and it helps that she always gave us Friday's class to work on them with TA's. Very good teacher for PHYS 130 and makes notes in class that are easy to follow along with and copy down.
Alright. I went into this class scared outta my wits with this prof cause the rating was pretty bad for her on this site. Turns out she's one of the best teachers cause she knows how to teach. Pay attention and you'll understand everything as if you were sitting in a junior high class. However, she can be a littl condescending and rude af at times.
She is excellent.
Super engaging, midterm was exactly like many questions on the assignments, so do them well, assignments are pretty good, depending on how good you are at certain units. Lots of resources for help on eClass, only certain times you have to take notes cause she posts PowerPoint on eClass.
I had Dr. Wheelock in PHYS 126 and I like her a lot more in PHYS 261, probably because it was a smaller and more interesting class. She explains concepts very clearly and reinforces them with examples and homework. Exams are similar to practice ones. Dr. Wheelock is very caring and it shows through her lectures; she wants you to succeed.
A solid choice for a prof.
Great teacher. Knows how to explain everything clearly. The midterms are very chalenging but they prepare you for the finals
Wheelock was one of the better profs I had this semester! Her midterm wasnt that different from the HW assignments so do go through them before you sit your exam. Attend all lectures and take notes during class, and youre GOLD!
She's very detailed in her lectures and gives good feedback. She provides class time once a week with TA's present to help with homework. She's a good prof overall and I would recommend taking her class.
never prepared always pauses in middle of sentences always saying uhm uhm uhm all the time
Good prof but her lecture is monotone and can be extremely sleepy. She often made mistakes during lecture which is very confusing. Her homework can be long and confusing but doable.
She's great at at teaching, very enthusiastic about it and seems like a person who's loving what she is doing but not someone whom you can talk to, she'll make you feel bad if you ask her for an answer
Dr. Wheelock is an alright prof. Her homework is pretty hard and her exams are super conceptually focused. Her lectures are pretty dry and she doesn't post in-class notes eclass (only the empty slides). Definitely one of the more difficult profs I've had.
She's overall a decent prof. You can tell she's taught this course for awhile now because her lectures are very structured and organized, which I can appreciate. Her tests are fair, however they definitely have quite a few theory questions which some people won't like. I've gone to her office hours once, and I admit she was a little condescending.
Professor Wheelock is a good person but sadly not a great physics professor. Her lectures are incredibly monotone and dull, and her exams are incredibly tricky, conceptual, and unpredictable. I had to teach myself all of the content with the textbook (since I learned nothing from lectures) and felt the course was unnecessarily hard and unenjoyable.
Maya is great at building foundations in physics. She explains concepts very well. When preparing for her exams I suggest you do EVERY problem in the back of the textbook because she often uses those on her exams as well as homework. There are two exams both worth 15% of your grade and a final exam worth 50%. Overall, I would recommend her class.
Had her for Phys130 so I know how she is. She knows how to explain concepts but for Enph131 you dont really need that. I stopped going to her lectures cause her examples are not interesting to me. Be aware that class avg for enph would be high, she always get many smart people in her class (ours is 3.0 and its the highest avg among all sections)
This prof is fine for this class. She goes over fairly simplified examples in class so its good for getting the basic concepts but you have to do a lot of work outside of class to understand the harder questions. There is no assigned homework so it is really easy to get behind. The midterm was easy but the final was quite difficult.
The best physics prof at campus. She has perfected the balance between theory and examples in her notes. Very good at explaining and many of her examples came on thr midterm and final, ;)
She is very passionate about her work which makes u more interested in class.
I'm not gifted enough or interested in physics to do well in her class. She tests on key points and likes concept questions. The midterms were good but the 50% weighted final finnessed my grade so cheers to that. If you know the concepts and the formula sheet though, it should be okay.
Maya Wheelock saved my physics mark, I could not have done as well as I did without her. She has made me enjoy physics and I will never forget the help and support she gave me in all of her office hours when I did not understand a concept. To do well practice practice practice from her quizzes and the textbook, I nearly did every single question.
Maya is definitely the best professor, she's always willing to help you even though it's Friday night. Her test is doable if you study the materials she posted. For sure, I will take her classes again.
Wheelock is an amazing professor! You need to go to the lectures because the majority of her notes are hand written and she does not post them, but her tests are straightforward; as long as you redo the homework problems and read your notes you will do well in the class. She's a very smart lady and truly wants her students to succeed in her class!
She is one of the best profs in University of Alberta. First, if you are willing to listen in class, you are basically guarantee a C+ without studying. Her notes are easy to read, informative and useful. Second, People literally fight for sit in her lecture. LOL Third, come to class very early to make sure you can get a good spot.
Maya Wheelock is an amazing professor. Her lectures are well structured and organized, making them a highlight of my long days. She is easily accessible in office hours and really wants you to succeed!
Really good professor. Explains concepts clearly and has fair midterms and finals. If you do the practice questions and pay attention you'll do really good. She also really nice when you go visit her in her office.
I found her great, but tough. If you can do the problems sets independently, you're pretty set for the midterms (fair) though the final will be a lot harder and will require lot more prepping (2h final, too many Q's). She does a conceptual class with clicker concept questions along the way, so once you start struggling, it's best to get extra help.
She takes it very seriously but you can tell she wants to be there. The final was SO hard it was actually ridiculous but I guess you can guess your way through it considering it's all multiple choice. She's probably the best PHYS130 prof because kids from other classes would always come into our lectures.
Not a terrible prof but she drones on a lot which can make it really hard to stay engaged. The course content was relatively easy however, her exams are only out of a few points so a bad mark on one of them can really hurt. Probably wouldn't take again.
Maya's a very safe choice for physics-- very fair exams and thorough notes. She seemed a little intimidating but was caring (changed hmwrk due dates when requested). I really dislike the NECESSITY to go to class (her notes are empty), but thankfully she goes at a nice pace so there's enough time to write everything out :) good prof
From my experience, her lectures were excellent! She did seem a little condescending when I spoke to her one-on-one during work sessions in lectures.
PHYS 130 consisted of three professors in my semester. Every first year engineering student would pile into her lecture since her note material was the most applicable to the exams. She would get quite frustrated with the overload of students, so be thankful if you are registered in her class. Fairly easy to understand and follow.
A lot of the material that was in this course was in introductory level chemistry and physics classes so for the most part it is quite straight forward. She does test a lot on theory so make sure you are familiar with your notes. The worksheets she makes for homework are very representative of the midterm and final which was pretty straightforward
Competent with the material, explains concepts well and is organized.
She is about an average, I don't see anything spectacular. She didn't make the topics very interesting.
Okay guys, I'm gonna be 110% honest. It is REALLY hard to get a good mark in this class simply because there's no organized way to study for it. The lecture notes are EXTREMELY condensed (to a point where they're pointless). Tips: pay attention/ take notes from weekly videos, (im not kidding), Highlight important theories/ formulas, review pastexam
One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken, Dr. Wheelock made this course fun and easy. Exams were very clear though the fine details (and exceptions) were super important.
Prof. Wheelock always made our Physics class enjoyable with her *usually* friendly/polite personality. The only times when she wasn't so nice were pretty reasonable - not enough seats for everyone (meaning people of another class weren't supposed to be there) and taking pictures/videos of lectures/slides without permission.
Really good explainer.
Probably the best professor I had for first year. EN PH 131 is a notoriously tough first year engineering course but her lectures and notes made it so easy to understand the material. She gives very clear and detailed explanations which really helps when you are prepping for your exams.
Wheelock is a really great lecturer! She went through the material at a nice pace and was very clear and organized. Her exams were fair and very similar to her homework questions. You definitely need to attend class though because her notes aren't complete. She is also very caring and handled the move to online classes due to the covid very well.
Dr. Wheelock is incredible. She explains things so clearly, whether through lectures or during office hours. Her online homework assignments take off partial marks if you get a question wrong, so that you can try multiple times and focus on learning rather than simply getting a good mark. Her exams are also very fair. I would highly recommend!!
Amazing lady, super helpful even during the COVID crisis. I do not understand why she has low reviews, I think she is an incredible prof who makes physics interesting and doable. I appreciate that she doesn't put "challenge" questions in her exams; they are all doable, so it is quite possible to get a good mark in the class.
Dr. Wheelock is a solid choice for a physics prof. If you even skim the textbook before class, her explanations make everything crystal clear. Not always the most engaging, but she makes sure you understand what you need to. Very reasonable exams, just make sure to do practice questions and go over the homework questions.
When it comes to Physics 126, Wheelock is a solid choice. She is a master at physics and makes it interesting for the entire class. Her lecture style focuses on brief explanations of the concepts followed up with many practice questions. Not many profs can say they hit an asteroid with a satellite but Wheelock can.
I heard great things about her before I went for her lectures. Turns out, she is not worth the hype for this course at least. Maybe she had not taught this course often so she seemed underconfident and overly conscious with her work which took away a little bit of the charm of learning. Overall, a good prof, but not the best for this course.
Prof. Wheelock is a very well rounded instructor. her lectures are well organized, go over the material in its entirety and she teaches good strategies for tackling problems. The only issue I had with her PHYS 130 class was the blended learning format.
She explains concepts quite well and is really focussed on students developing problem-solving abilities. Exams are quite fair: tough if you hadn't done enough practice problems but fairly straightforward if you had. Many examples in lectures though are not posted in the notes so it is important to attend.
She connects well with students
Probably one of the best professors for PHYS130. She is good at separating what we actually need to know and what is beyond the scope of the course, which other profs are not as good at doing.
Maya does a good job explaining concepts in her Friday lecture videos but where she lacks is in her delivery of content. Instead of making her own lectures she piggybacks off of Roger Moore's YouTube lectures which are completely useless for the tests and assignments. I'm sure if she made and delivered her own lectures she would be much better.
One of the best prof I had this semester. The lectures and examples are perfect and make difficult concepts easier to understand. She knows how to teach. Only draw back is that this sem she piggy backed prof Moores YouTube videos. Mans videos were useless derivations. WHELLOCK IS A HELLA GOOD PROF but the structuring of the course this sem was bad
She used Roger Moore's lectures instead of her own, which is useless, but her Friday's workshops are helpful. Overall, an average lecturer.
Professor Wheelock was an amazing professor for PHYS 130. She taught very well and helpful in her explanations. PHYS 130 was a decently challenging course however Professor Wheelocks examples and notes were very helpful.
Wheelock was great. Her notes are concise and to the point and she teaches in a way that I found makes lots of sense. Tells you exactly what you need to know so the exams are no surprise. Homework is beneficial and it's super easy to get help if needed.
The midterms were sequential tests comprised of ten questions worth one mark. They were brutal as students cannot check their work, manage their time, or move past question they were struggling with. When students opposed the formatting as it set students up for failure, she shut them all down without compassion.
Enjoyed the way lectures were set up: videos posted online for lecture material twice a week and one session with exam questions. Midterms and final were all sequential, can't go back to questions. With that being said there were around 3-5 questions per page, but once you press next you can't go back to the page. Homework about once a week
Her online set up is brutal, she prerecords video lectures and only has synchronous classes once a week that only goes over examples with little time on theory. Also, exams are proctored and sequential, with the practice exams being very dissimilar to the exam. Her lectures are alright but her exams make this course really unbearable
big freaking bruh; EVERYTHING is sequential + she spends more time preventing us from cheating than she does in helping us during our 1 hour weekly LIVE sessions. If you like asynchronous PHYSICS, this is the class to go to. Class is only offered 2x a year. Very hard for someone to do well in physics unless they have a genuine interest.
You're going to see a lot of talk about the sequential exams and how frustrating they were and yes, they were a PAIN! However, if you look beyond that, she was a very caring and FAIR teacher. Keep in mind I'm not the best student but I know when something is fair and she was just that. Hwk due weekly, async lectures, and an optional live lectures
To do well, stay on top of watching the async lectures. Before attempting the hwk, watch the lectures and have a good idea of the content. Don't be afraid to ask for help, she's almost ALWAYS there. She's very organized and tries to really prevent cheating which might seem very annoying at first, but just know she cares. You're in good hands :))
My only gripe with Dr. Wheelock was the sequential exams which provided lots of stress. Besides that, she teaches the material really well, tests fairly, and makes the material easy to understand. I bet shes really great to have in person, though online was not the best.
Her exams are the most unfair way to test physics. They are made up of numerical response questions that take just under 10 minutes to solve and check (which you have to do one after the other because it's sequential) and are marked as either 0/1 or 1/1 no part marks. the exams are out of about 10 questions. You do the math... u know what I mean...
Good choice for a professor. She is a good teacher and cares about her students. Its been mentioned before on here, but her sequential exams are still annoying to deal with, because it makes the exam less about what you know, and more about how well you can budget time. That adds unnecessary stress for little extra benefit.
Overall, I think she did a great job teaching this course. Despite her exams being sequential, the actual exam questions are very fair as long as you've done tons of practice. Her notes are very organized and clear. She is also replies to emails fairly quickly. Unless sequential exams are a deal breaker for you, I would highly recommend this prof!
She was a good teacher in terms of good lectures and practice questions but she made the entire online class experience really inconvenient for students. She had sequential exams "to prevent cheating" but really it just messed with your test taking strategy regardless of cheating and did not give enough time for exams.
I liked her course format; you can get through the async videos pretty quickly and the examples she did during the live lectures helped cement things. I don't think you need to watch the lectures AND do the textbook readings (textbook is good for practice questions though). Personally I found the lecture videos more to the point than the textbook.
I didn't mind the sequential exams, but the course would've been better with non-sequential exams. She breaks down each week's lectures into 5-10 minutes so they're easy to digest. She explains concepts well and provides many examples that are representative of exam questions. IMO you can do well without reading the textbook.
EN PH 131 felt like an impossible course sometimes, but Wheelock wasn't the worst prof to have had. She was well prepared and had pretty diverse (though straightforward) examples in class. However the course structure was unsightly, and she is obsessed with sequential exams. I imagine she'd be much better in person.
lectures and explanations actually make sense and are pretty useful. good prof
The lecture material is exactly related to what you'll see on assignments and tests. She explains everything completely and is very good at answering questions. Pay attention and she will tell you exactly how to do well.
She was good at providing examples in class that pertain to the coursework. I did not like the homework of weekly prep quizzes. Each wrong answer had a deduction so it wasn't the best way to learn. She seemed passionate about the course although her delivery of the course was not great. Talked about stuff we were not being tested on.
Doesnt just read off of a pdf, actually knows what shes talking about and teaches. The course was hard, but as long as you pay attention youll succeed.
Yea she's a solid choice. Nothing too out of the ordinary for teaching, just a great, straightforward teaching style for a decently challenging class. Would definitely recommend!
She's very good at breaking down concepts and making them easier to understand, always available to answer any questions. Just don't disturb her lectures, she will not be happy.
The most important thing for Phys130 is to make (or find) a good formula sheet where you know what every single variable does. If you do this, this class will be easy. Wheelock does a good job at explaining all the equations you will need to include on one. The first few preclass videos will seem insane, but you don't need to understand them fully.
Decent prof, does a good job at explaining what the equations covered in the lectures are used for, but the majority of my learning was through videos by other profs and reading the textbook. Just don’t talk loud in class, she’ll call you out
Really good at explaining concepts in the course. Prepares us well for the exam. Lectures include theory, formula derivations, and practice problems that she works through. Should try a good amount of practice questions from the textbook to do well in this class but the prof sets you up well to attempt all the questions.
Maya is a nice person and her lectures are alright. I found her online prerecorded lectures to be better than her in person instruction. Practice tests were helpful
Professor Wheelock was a great prof overall. I liked the pre-recorded videos (when classes were online) instead of 3 live lectures a week. That being said, I also enjoyed her live lectures when we were back in person. The tests were fair and there was only one midterm which was nice. Overall she made the content interesting.
I really enjoyed this course with Professor Wheelock. She is an engaging lecturer and she managed the online portion of the class quite well. The quizzes and exams were also fair, and she provided plenty of useful practice problems for those who didn't own the textbook. Highly recommend!
Maya was a great lecturer compared to my experience with other professors in this department. She made the concepts clear to understand, and I enjoyed learning physics 126. (This is coming from someone who hates physics lol) I found her midterm to be a lot more fair/easier than the final, but overall decent professor.
My grade only reflects my hate of physics. She is a great prof and like many uni courses as long as you do things when you are supposed to, you should be fine. I would recommend reading the textbook ahead of class to get a better understanding of the material, also PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. You simply need exposure to different types of questions
Maya is a very genuine prof and is effective in how she teaches. Class time is used efficiently and example questions are very representative of exam materials. Both the midterm and final were much easier than anticipated.
Depending on your learning style, she may be a good prof for you. Personally, I think I would have been better off teaching myself the material. While not a bad mark, the B+ I received in her course was my worst mark through first year engineering. She didnt explain concepts in logical and easy to understand way, at least not in a way I understood
Midterm was extremely difficult. The questions were at a EXTREMELY more challenging than any of the midterm review questions.
Maya is an interesting lady with one of the greatest passions for physics I've ever seen. However, she is not great at answering questions and easily loses her patience. She also made our section's midterm 15-25% harder than the rest of the instructor's midterms for reasons I do not know. Great at teaching though so I recommend taking her class.
Maya was a great lecturer to have for a first year physics course as she was able to easily convey the material that needed to be learned, however, to succeed on her midterm exams you needed a thorough understanding of the concepts taught rather than just completing questions without knowing why these concepts occur.
Explained concepts really well, and the lecture examples were really effective at getting you to understand the material. Seminar questions were challenging, but were really effective at preparing you for the exams.
She's a sweetheart. One of the best science profs I've had.
Dr. Wheelock is one of the best lecturers I've had! Clear, concise, and explains conceptual/mathematical problems to a great extent.
Maya was a fantastic professor who clearly cared about the success of her students. The way she taught was amazing and she had many in-class example problems she would always go through in such detail! Although the midterm and weekly homework were quite difficult I would definitely take her again.
Firstly, I never took physics before; I had to sign a waiver. So, I struggled through PHYS 124 and then I had to take PHYS 126 I was dreading the experience, but after the first lecture I immediately realized Dr.Wheelock's was a wonderful prof. She went through many examples, was engaging, and made herself available after class. Great Experience!
Maya is a great prof, she explains concepts in a way that's fairly easy to grasp. My poor grade is reflective only of my sheer incompetence regarding physics, I would've failed the class if it wasn't for such a good prof.
Physics is not my thing but Dr. Wheelock made the content very learnable. She explained concepts well and gave homework, practice questions and exams that are (in my opinion) representative of the difficulty and style of exam questions. That being said, expect to do lots of practice questions in order to do well. Class is also graded on a curve.
Maya is the best physics professor/teacher I've ever had. Don't let how good of a prof she is fool you. I took it for granted, made me work less hard under the assumption I knew everything and it caused me to get an A-. She is clear, concise, and an amazing teacher all around.
Overall, physics is not my favourite class but Dr. Wheelock made it very interesting. The pace in class can be a bit slow sometimes, but it is consistent. It is nice that she does not rush through concepts, she really emphasizes important things. She made physics enjoyable and overall it was a great class. Do the textbook problems, they help a lot.
Wheelock is a good professor. Her notes and lectures are organized well, and all neccesary tools to succeed are there for the student. She lectures well, always willing to help, though she won't inspire those who aren't already inspired by physics. Good all around prof, not the absolute best, but you can do a lot worse.
Can we have a quiet please? iykyk
Even if you struggle with physics, she explains the concepts really well and thoroughly to make it very easy to understand.
She is an excellent teacher, conveying the information and concepts in an easy-to-understand way. She does a great job of explaining concepts and then the thought process being solving problems. We did a variety of practice problems during the lectures, which were very helpful.
She is an excellent teacher. She conveys concepts in an easy-to-understand way. We did lots of practice problems in class, which were very helpful. She goes through the thought-process on how to solve problems, explains how the concepts apply, and point out common mistakes students make. I would definitely recommend her.
If you pay attention and do the homework, you will be more than fine. She explains physics so simply and helps you understand the concepts if you ask for help or pay attention to the lecture. When I took her, Fridays were work periods where we can ask TA's questions. One of the best uni profs I had with helping us learn the material for first year.
Very solid prof. She explains concepts well and her notes are pretty easy to follow, although her examples were pretty simple compared to the assignments and exams.
She is a very good professor and knows what she is talking about. Gives lots of practice and records lectures. Exams are hard but that is just physics.
Heads up for first year engineering students. En Ph 131 (Dynamics) is by far the hardest course you will take so far. Dr. Wheelock does a great job explaining the concepts, and trust me, you do not want to miss a lecture and you want to practice this course as it is very tough. Definitely try to get Wheelock tho!
It was a difficult class, but Professor Wheelock helped prepare us with extra help time and informative lectures.
While she is a good lecturer her ability to assess students is lacking. Her midterm exam's structure was deeply flawed and allowed only 3 minutes per question for 17 questions in a 50-minute span. The exclusive use of multiple-choice questions also hindered my ability to gauge my problem-solving skills and ruined its utility as an educational tool.
I had never really enjoyed physics and it never came easily to me, but Dr. Wheelock teaches in a way that makes concepts easy to understand and even enjoyable. Her exams are all multiple choice and more concept based due to the time crunch. You can also boost your grade with her assigned homework. I could not recommend her enough for phys 126.
I don't think her exams are fair. The practice she gives is so easy, but then the actual exam is a lot more challenging by far. She also has a lot of questions for very little time...I do not recommend at all.
Mechanics/dynamics one of the hardest first year engineering courses and Dr. Wheelock does a great job at explaining concepts. We spend a fairly short time on theory then do many, many practice problems during the lectures. She also posts the recording of the lecture within the same day.
GREAT!!! I hate physics and Maya's the best out there. She made me enjoy the class and I genuinely enjoyed it. She is very fair as well! Exams are very doable if you study and practice.
Just go to the lecture and have proper lecture notes she's the BEST phy 130 prof I was lucky enough to have her and all you gotta do is the lecture notes and assignments and you'll have an A in this course, trust me if a guy like me can get a B- you all can def get a A easily.
Professor Wheelock makes physics enjoyable. Her lectures are clear, and the practice problems are super helpful. While the exams can be challenging, unstuckstudy ai is a great resource for test prep. Definitely take this class!
Beautiful professor that tries to make every lecture enjoyable and every hard topic - easy. 2 lectures a week with 3rd lecture per week being a lecture with TAs' help are what I liked the most
She is an awesome prof. You won't have a problem passing the course if you come to every class and actually listen. She provides screen recordings of her lectures which I found to be incredibly helpful when it came time for the midterm and the final.
A really enthusiastic prof and clearly explains important concepts. Her in-class demonstrations helped solidify my understanding of certain topics and the Friday help sessions were really useful. She also takes time to clear up any misunderstandings from the weekend prep.
Great teacher, be warned assignments and exams often are quite a bit more difficult than the examples covered in class.
Good professor, requirements were clear from the start. Lots of material in this class to learn.
She's a pretty good teacher and really drills in key concepts-- "we know that the current is the flow of electrons but remember that it is defined as if positive charge were moving" LOLLLL love her BUT WHAT THE SIGMA WAS THAT MIDTERM IM GOING TO CRASH OUT YOOOO I JUST NEED 15 MORE MIN NEXT TIME PLEASE PROF MAYA IM BEGGGGING I CANT DO 16 q in 48 min
GOAT. All you need to do to score 90+ on exams are to re-watch her lecture videos that she posts. Her lectures make so much sense especially when you're watching it knowing what's coming up.
Dr. Wheelock is one of the best profs I've had. Her lectures are clear and straight to the point — I scored high on the midterm and did well on the final just from her videos. Samir gets all the hype, but Wheelock gives you exactly what you need. If you want to succeed, take her.
Incredible Prof, that's the only way to put it. Her explanations are outstanding despite the very difficult course. Her lectures are recorded so just watch them at 2x speed and you're chilling.
Overall, well done lectures. Compared to PHYS 124, the material was definitely harder and more abstract, and the first midterm was a time crunch, but I found the final to be more fair in terms of questions and time. Honestly, very doable class. Don't be like me and please put in more effort on the given examples lol. Good luck future students.
Much tougher course than Phys 124 but Prof Wheelock cares about her students and is very kind. It is a tough course but she does her best to make it easier on her students.
She is a fantastic professor. She is very kind and caring and gives engaging lectures. The midterm was a bit difficult, but nothing unmanageable. The final was easy. The tests are very similar to in-class examples and homework questions. explained more complex topics in simple ways that built up to the topic and made it easier to understand.
There's no homework in this class besides the 1 hour seminar every friday which is such a bonus but to study, the fundamental problems are your bff. Maya is a good prof and explains the examples well. She starts the problem with the steps we need to take which is very helpful. The final was hell though it was so bad I felt hollow after writing it.
Amazing prof who genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Her lectures were information heavy but didn't feel like it, she did a great job. There were weekly assignment that were pretty easy if you went to lectures (or watched the posted recordings). Some people thought the tests were hard but I didn't have trouble with them.
She's an excellent prof spending most of class going through practice problems. Just don't talk in her class or she'll say quiet please 3 times lol
good lectures, can tell she is very passionate, but QUIET PLEASE!!!
Good professor who genuinely cares. Can get a bit boring at times, but other than that, if you can stay focused, you will get a lot out of her lectures
Excellent teacher who simplifies complex concepts well. Exams are fair and definitely more manageable than the past . If you want clear explanations and a structured environment, she is a great pick.
Relies way too much on the students watching the weekly videos for lecture material. If you didn't do the weekly videos you're basically chopped for the week's lectures. Very nice but has very little patience for first-years, to prep for the midterms and lectures don't even bother with lecture review, just go straight into the practice tests
