Quite a bit of work... she is extremely nice and very funny but at times the class can seem boring.
She is so cute and funny- a great class to have with her. She has a strong accent but you get used to it
Absolutely excellent! Its obvious that she loves what she does and shes a great teacher. Her strong accent may be a little tough at first, but its really easy to get used to and after time becomes one of her many cute qualities.
Im horrible at spanish, but this prof was really amazing. She was interesing and funny, and had lots of good stories. Grading was more than fair, and she really cares that the students do well. Refreshing to have her as a prof. She has a small accent.

This class is great, Myra is a really nice lady and very helpful.
This is a great teacher. Her accent isn't that bad once you get use to it. Barely any homework, just workbooks and test and couple sentences here or there. Everything is about speaking and group work. She is very easy to relate to.
she is really nice! Just make sure you try and she will like you. Very funny, never in a bad mood. Not very much homework either. You have to do workbook, and write some stuff here and there, but it isn't bad
I am crappy at spanish but shes very helpful and nice You must study but if you have the chance to take 114 instead of 115 take 114. Shes an awesome lady always willing to help and pretty cute too, and funny. Good Class
she is so adorable and enthusiastic. she's funny, explains really well and has a cool accent.
She is a very good teacher who really cares about the spanish language. She tries to keep students energized and makes sure you know what is going on. Sometimes can get boring and repetative- lots of group speaking
excellent teacher, very insightful, funny, and concerned, she really cares about the students. She is challenging, and if you give some effort you will learn much. I don't like spanish, but i like her.. i got a 3.5. South American women are HOT!!
Very nice lady. If you attend class and pay attention you will do very well.
easy. if you took spanish in high school you should do very well. and if not, take good notes. she's a great teacher, very funny, and helpful. recommended.
This class is so hard. If you have never taken Spanish before in High School don't take this class. She is a nice teacher but she expects you to now Spansih the first day. I was lost the whole time and I had to learn myself. Take this class only if you took SPanish in High School otherwise don't.
Probably the hardest spanish teacher at Oakland. If you want a challenge and are eager to learn spanish, take this prof. If you are just taking the class cuz its required, STAY AWAY. Gives out ridiculous HW, GRADES it, and her tests are anything but easy. Very helpful, but needlessly difficult.
She was an awesome teacher, probably my favorite. She was really funny and helpful. She made the class very enjoyable and yet she still pushed us.
Prof. Schmalzried is probably one of my favorite teachers. She is difficult but if you go to class and pay attention you are able to get by. SHe is also very helpful if you are having trouble. She also incorporates a sense of humor into her teaching. She is a motivated teacher!
I went into Spanish indifferent to the language. This professor made me love it so much that I am minoring in it. If you don't like to do work and want an easy A, she isn't for you, but if you truly want to learn the language, take her. She is funny and very helpful. My favorite professor at OU.
Wonderful! Love her!
Prof. Schmalzreid is one of the best profs at OU. She is truly concerned about students and has a great personality, but she expects you to attend class frequently (if not all the time) and assigns plenty of homework. If you don't like to do work and want an easy A, she isn't for you, but if you truly want to learn the language, take her.
Very good professor. Very nice. Did show one really stupid movie though..... never quite figured out the point of it. She really tried to help, and group work was fun.
She is an awesome teacher. She is the best, that it, plain and simple.

Shes hot and shes a good teacher what more could you ask for
Helpful. Not too difficult and not too easy. Nice person. I would suggest her as your teacher.
she is a really good teacher...not too hard but u have to do your homework. shes really nice and always willing to help. if uve had spanish before this class will be easy for u!
She is not too hard if u do your homework you will do good on your quizes. She does have a pritty heavy accent though.
Mayra was awesome! She is by far the best spanish teacher I have had. She is really nnice and always very helpful. She has a heavy accent but she is understandable. I also liked how she used spanish a lot in her classes. it really helps with learning the language. Overall, i think she was a great professor and I would definitely take her again!
Mayra is one of the best professors/teachers I have ever had. She not too hard, and not too easy. She makes sure you learn and understand the material. She makes class fun and interesting and is also personable and non-favoritive. Her quizzes and homework are very straight forward and she i always willing to help. I strongly reccomend her!
Mayra is definitely a must for spanish professors. She is easy to get along with and is very into her job. She is available for questions. She makes class fun and interesting. I definitely would recommend her!!
She is awesome! Not only do you learn Spanish, but you also have fun while doing it. There are lots of quizzes but she prepares you well, and she also assigns homework that is due on the day of the quiz. Just do the work and show up to class and you'll be fine.
Just come to class having done EVERYTHING in the sylybus. As long as she can tell that you are making an effort, she will make an effort to help you.
This professor happens to have favorites in all her classes. If you aren't a brown noser than you will recieve no help in the class!
I did not like this class. She has a very heavy accent & it is very hard to understand her for the first couple weeks. She has 3 tests, where 2 chapters are one test...which is a pain. Not a class where you can skip since she checks attendance every class. You got to work for your grade and was not an easy blow off spanish class.
Pretty easy class. She speaks 95% of it in Spanish. Her english in rough. A lot of busy work. A LOT. But you never turn it in. Just work in groups in the class. Had to write 3 compositions, 3 tests, no quizzes, one oral exam. Pretty easy. Just a more extensive review of what was learned in earlier spanish.
I had Myra's 115 Spanish Class, her accent was so heavy it made most of her lectures boring and very hard to understand. Thankfully the three tests in this class all from the book, so if you read and studied the book you would do fine. Also attendence is mandatory or else your grade would suffer.
Wonderful Teacher. Very fun and energenic. Accent was very tough for the english part, but she know what she was talking about and really helped us understand it very well.
Easy class if you do the work. The tests are a little on the tough side, but the homework is all graded for completion. Do the homework and show up for class should guarantee at least a 3.0
Good teacher. Expects a lot. TONS of homework. Essays, exams, oral exam, homework. Lots of points. High book use. Teaches in Spanish. Her English is poor.
"omg she speaks in spanish!" cry me a river, it's a SPANISH class. myra's a great teacher willing to help her students, especially those who put forth effort (participating in class, doing the hw). you're expected speak in spanish. i've learned the most from her and her class - great experience. highly recommend her.
WAY harder than 114, her lectures are very hard to understand since her english isnt very good. so much busy work its ridiculous and her tests are much harder than the homework. doesnt give a break to help you and you cant miss ANY class. One of my hardest teachers I've ever had, don't take her unless you're fluent in spanish or a fast learner!
Great professor! There's a lot of homework + compositions and she mostly speaks in Spanish but that's necessary when you're learning a language. She's very funny & approachable & wants you to succeed. Try not to miss class and be sure to participate a lot & you'll do great! Highly recommended, she's so cute and friendly!
Professor Schmalzried is a great professor if you are serious about learning Spanish. Her accent is a little hard to understand sometimes in English, but she mostly speaks Spanish anyway. You must go to class, and ALWAYS do the homework; it just makes the actual classtime much less stressful. I would definitely take a class taught by her again.
Mayra is a very sweet professor and its cute how she cant pronounce certain english words. She knows what she is talking about and she knows how to teach. YOU just have to be prepared. If you have not taken at least 2yrs of a language before, DO NOT take this class it moves VERY fast and you have to know some background or you will get lost.
She is the most caring professor I've ever met. She WANTS you to get it and will do anything she can to help you. She does require attendance but it is a language class, that is to be expected. Also does require you to do the workbook for points. SPN 215 is not an easy class in general, but she does her best to help you be fluent.
Best Spanish professor hands down. She genuinely wants you to understand the language and do well, and the only way to do that is come to class, do the homework, and participate- it's the only way to learn a language! She's funny and cute and tells stories but she's very serious about getting work done. I'd take her for every SPN class if I could!
She's a really great Spanish teacher, one of the few. She's serious about Spanish but will also made things funny and interesting. If you're more on the quiet side or don't like participating, although there's a grade for it, she won't harass you into doing it. Very personable and easy to talk to. I'd definitely recommend her.
She is a great professor and I learned a lot from her. She is a funny, high strung woman who is always shuffling around the classroom. If you want to learn Spanish, her class is the one to take. She speaks in Spanish all the time, so your listening comprehension will improve greatly. I highly recommend this class for the devoted student.
Very understanding person. Not easy. You'll have to study hard and often if you want to do well. She hardly ever speaks in English. You'll get your moneys worth, but maybe not a great grade. For the first month or so it is hard to understand what she wants due to NO English. She is edgy. If you are serious TAKE HER. If you aren't DO NOT.
Mayra is really funny and engaging--she tries to maintain an interactive classroom. I like that she speaks in Spanish 99% of the time. She is smart, hilarious, and she wants her students to succeed. I have learned a lot, and I will definitely be taking her for other classes.
Mayra is adorable and absolutely hilarious! She's an amazing prof and definitely knows her stuff, as she's a native speaker. A lot of learning and studying is required for this class, as is involved with learning any new language. She makes learning fun.
Awesome professor. She's passionate about teaching...she wants to see the students succeed. Not the easiest professor, but you will learn a lot. She's got a good sense of humor and she's very nice. Just make sure to come to class everyday and study hard for the exams. Definitely recommend her as a professor.
She is an awesome prof. She is a tough grader but she is fair. Speaks only in Spanish and expects a lot of conversation from her students but will not make you feel stupid when you mess up<--- my favorite thing about her!
Very caring professor. Yes, the class is difficult and there is a lot of homework out of the book, but its an advanced language class, you can't find one without a lot of work. Still, I paid attention and went to every class and got a 3.8. Overall, one of my favorite professors at OU.
She was my favorite!!! Lots of homework but very easy..tests were fair and if you study you'll do great! She is so caring and wants everyone to do good! Have to go to class and participate, but she makes it very enjoyable! not a blowoff but with a lot of studying its pretty easy.TAKE HER!!!!
If you do not know spanish and you are a beginner, do NOT take this professor. She does not speak one word of english the entire semester, even when explaining new information or culture and then expects you to know what she is saying. you pretty much have to teach yourself everything and get a translator.
Honestly I took her in the summer which is why it was hard. we had HW every day, remember only 8 weeks. I would recommend her for fall or winter, not summer.
I would take her for every single spanish class if I could. She is adorable, funny, caring and just perfect. She is a native speaker but i find her spanish very easy to understand unlike my classmates. Lots of homework and you need to come to class, but why would you skip? She brightens my day & I want to learn as much as I can from her. Take her!
She is awesome! So caring, funny, and adorable. She speaks mostly Spanish in the classroom, but does an amazing job making it clear to beginners. Her class is definitely my favorite!
Best Spanish teacher at OU, she is so helpful if you have any questions and really cares about your grades, she makes the class interesting and is funny. If you can take her, DO IT
She is the best professor I have ever had! If you ever need help then she is more than willing to help you if you ever need it and she really cares about her students. Her class is NOT a blow off but I would recommend her to anyone!
She cares about her students and does her best to make you understand. At times, she talks fast so it is difficult to understand her, but she is a lot of fun and has tons of energy. Her class is not a blow off and you must participate.
Mayra is my favorite professor ever! She is adorable and hilarious. She expects you to do work and participate, which makes class more interesting. I looked forward to her class everyday. She loves to help, and really wants her students to succeed. My Spanish has improved so much thanks to her! "Like you mean it, chicos!"
Absolutely amazing!!! She is a wonderful profesora and cares about every student! It isn't an easy A, but she rewards those that work hard and participate. The final is only worth 20% so if you world hard all semester you won't get killed by the final. No surprises, she tells you exactly what she wants. An amazing experience!
Mayra was absolutely wonderful! I would take her class again in a heartbeat! Her sense of humor along with her love for the Spanish language are the perfect match. The workload is consistent and participation is required, but it's not as bad as people would make it out to be. If you're going to take Spanish, make sure your professor is Mayra :D
Words cannot describe how much I love Mayra! I've taken three classes with her so far. She's helpful, adorable, and her expectations are clear and reasonable. Absolutely love her classes!
I love Myra!! she's so helpful and funny and makes learning spanish pretty easy. The exams are super easy and the homework for this class is really easy. This professor loves people who participate and if you don't participate she'll make you. Love her!!
Very good professor. Is helpful and personable. Class was interesting and fun to attend. Exams are very similar format time after time. The book is used daily. Attend class (mandatory), listen, and do the homework. The class isn't difficult, though the OU language grading scale is rather difficult (need a 99% for 4.0)
I had an advantage because I've taken Spanish the past 4 years. If you're learning for the first time, she might not be easy. I imagine I would struggle if I was learning some of the concepts for the first time in her class. Attendance mandatory. Tries to be helpful, VERY nice + caring, I found the exams to be easy. I would take her again!
She is a really nice and helpful teacher. The class can be hard for new Spanish learners as she speaks 95% Spanish in class. Work hard, read your book and you can get through the class.
Great Proffesor, work hard and get an A. Also made me interested in spanosh, which I had no previous intrest in.
This class is challenging but worth the time. She's an amazing teacher who is passionate about the subject. One of the sweetest and most caring teachers I've ever had. Always willing to help out before/after class, but only if you ask. She loves students who participate so do the homework! I would take her for every class if I could.
LOVE this professor. You won't regret taking her class. Very helpful, easy to understand. Appreciates students speaking in Spanish and making an effort. Tests are straight from the book. Lets you know exactly what is on the exam. You need to study somewhat and do the online activities, but this is not a time consuming class. Took her for 214 & 215!
DO NOT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU HAVE TAKEN SPANISH PRIOR THIS COURSE YOU WILL FAIL AND THATS A PROMISE. ALL SHE SPEAKS IS SPANISH IN CLASS AND SHE ALWAYS HAS A DIFFICULT TIME EXPLAINING ASSIGNMENTS
I am warning everyone not to take this class unless you have taken 2+ years of spanish prior to this course. All she does is speak spanish the entire class period and is very unclear when it comes to assigning homework assignments. She jumps right into grammar and vocabulary without even reviewing the basics. DO NOT TAKE HER
I agree with some of the ratings. This class requires a lot of studying especially if you have not taken spanish before. She speaks spanish throughout the entire period and is very unclear. Beginners will have a difficult time in this class. I suggest taking a different professor if you are just beginning to learn spanish.
Most of the people on here don't know what they are talking about she does her job. The student should study enough before hand an have enough experience with the language to learn it. And by having some one spoon feed it to you in English is the plan, you shouldn't be taking anything past the required language gen eds.
Be prepared for 90% of the class being taught in Spanish, but, though she is a native speaker, she speaks slowly and clearly, clarifying if you ask for it. She encourages speaking in class. She is sweet, adorable, and animated. The grading is tough, mostly because the departmental exams aren't the easiest. You will learn with her!
I LOVED her! Yes, she does speak in spanish but she does her best to help you understand. She's very funny and easy. Do the homework, and if you have any questions, ask! I would recommend her!
Mayra is awesome! Go to class, participate, do your work online & in the book before class & she always keeps class interesting! The exams are easy if you study really well the night before. She doesn't take off too many points, even if your paper is bleeding red. She's generous but no curves or EC & a 99 is a 4 which is stupid but that's not her.
This class would be confusing unless you have had spanish before. Speaks in spanish most of the time but makes sure you understand. I had 2 years before this class and it was super easy. Do the online assignments and participate. She was extremely nice and funny. One of my favorite professors at OU! :)
She's honestly the best Spanish professor I've had so far at OU. Sure she speaks in Spanish most of the time, but it's to help you better understand the language. I understand more Spanish just from this semester than the past 4 years of taking Spanish combined. Make sure you go to class, participate, and do the online assignments, and you're good.
Would not recommend to students who have not taken Spanish before, she goes through each chapter very briefly. Expectations are very clear and she is more than willing to help anyone who needs it. Online assignment every night but as long as you read the chapter it is generally easy. Very nice and funny teacher and I enjoyed the class!
I absolutely adored this professor. She was so kind and understanding and made the class interesting and fun. However, you should have prior experience with Spanish because it is a fast paced course. She is an easy grader, and as long as you put effort in you will do fine.
I actually loved having her as a teacher!! She expects you to be productive in class, so don't be on your phone or sleeping, or else she will say something. The class is pretty easy as long as you do your homework and study. She likes to put you in groups to practice your Spanish, which was my least favorite part. She is also super funny!
I really adored her. As a non-traditional student and not having Spanish in high school I found her very easy and fair. Attendance is mandatory and as long as you do the assignments and participate you will be just fine in her class.
She was a great professor. The course was tough but she helped a lot. She takes things into consideration and seems to be an easy grader to me.
Great teacher do the homework and go to class and you will pass.
Mayra is easily the best professor I've ever had. She is very funny and cares deeply for her students. She loves Spanish, as therefore uses it a lot in class. She is very culturally knowledgeable and likes to connect world events to students and Spanish. I recommend her for people who have Spanish experience.
Horrible Professor... I normally aren't negative like this, but I took Intro to Spanish with her and I switched classes by the second week. She does not teach whatsoever.. She expects you to learn all the vocab, verbs, nouns and sayings all on your own through the book. Then she speaks in spanish the whole entire class and doesn't really explain what it translates to. If you don't already have experience in a spanish class I WOULD NOT TAKE HER. Instead take intro to Linguistics, it satisfies the same credit.
Mayra is amazing. She really cares about her students and takes the time to get to know you to help you learn the language on a more personal level. Although she speaks mostly in Spanish in class, if you do have questions she will switch to English to make sure you understand grammar concepts. Best Spanish teacher I have ever had.
I did not have prior experience in Spanish so I was very nervous about the class after reading some comments on here. However, I found her class to be very fair. She is very funny and teaches the material really well. She also likes to call on students in class and has her students do partner speaking activities so get ready to participate.
SeƱora is one of the best Spanish professors that I have ever had. I was a high school student dual enrolled in one of her high level Spanish classes ands was very accommodating. She offered extra help if needed and prepared us well for tests.
Mayra is a sweetheart, she really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She grades easy, if you make a mistake she only takes 1 point off for the mistake in general rather than for every time because she knows youre not going to magically understand what you did wrong later on in your test and fix it. Dont skip class! She gets sad
She wants everyone to succeed, but is not the best at communicating or teaching new material. Only take this course if you have been taught Spanish before hand. The homework is seven hours long which is a lot, so learn to space it out. Also come to class and participate or your grade will suffer.
Super hilarious, take her if you know Spanish and like Spanish classes. If you know a little Spanish then you're already on her good side. Very easy tests.
While I wouldnt necessarily say she was one of my favorite teachers or classes, I did end up knowing a lot more Spanish than I did coming in. I feel like she should be a less tough grader for such a basic gen ed
I love Mayra. Not only is she invested in teaching Spanish well, she is a genuine and precious human being. The class is centered around online homework and group discussion, but it was never overbearing. She grades very fairly and cares about her students. She does speak mostly Spanish during class, but she does her best to make it understandable.
Mayra is such a sweet lady. She actually cares about all her students! She allowed me to take my final on a different day than my assigned day since I was overwhelmed on the first day of exams and I was so appreciate of that. Although I felt like she was a tough grader on exams, the exams were fairly easy. Take her! :) you will learn so much!
Mayra is an AMAZING professor! Although there's a lot of homework online you can usually find the answers on quizlet. As long as you look over the grammar and culture, you'll get an A in the class. She focuses on speaking in class a lot and discussion so the lectures go by quick. LOVE HER!!
She is a great Spanish professor. She cares a lot and wants you to know the material. Shes willing to clarify and answer any and all questions. Theres a lot of online homework, but thats out of her control.
Fabulous women! Her class was the best. She grades fairly and explains everything clearly. I would take her for every Spanish class if that was possible!!!
Amazing, I just wish she taught higher level courses. She is native to Columbia and she is like the sweetest woman ever. She is very conscious of how she treats her students and she will answer any questions to the fullest. Definitely recommend.
This professor taught me more about Spanish in a single semester than I had ever previously learned. She is the most caring and wonderful person, who absolutely adores her students and would do anything to help them succeed. I wish I could continue taking her, but she doesn't teach higher levels than 2150 anymore!
She is awesome and she cares about everyone. Very funny
She is a wonderful professor and a kind person. She grades very fairly/is never too tough on the little things. Attendance is mandatory and participation is important in her class, but she makes it fun. Would recommend taking her class
Professor Schmalzried is one of the best professors I've ever had. She is a native speaker which makes learning Spanish engaging and insightful, and she's incredibly caring! Doing the homework and participating is crucial, otherwise it is not hard to succeed in this class.
I really enjoyed taking this class with Prof. Schmalzried she is really funny and caring. Taking Spanish over Zoom was a little difficult but she made it work. The hardest part of the class was the final exam it was nothing like the other test given online but other than that I would suggest taking a class with her.
Seems intimidating at first but she really does care about her students and wants you to understand the content. She is from Colombia and has a strong accent so she may be hard to understand in english, but her enthusiasm about culture made this class more fun. As in any language class, you will have to practice every day. I recommend taking her!
She was very sweet and very lenient with grading, so her class shouldn't be really hard. I didn't like how much we had to participate and speak to the whole class in Spanish. She also speaks Spanish the whole time and expects you to understand. Don't take her if you are not familiar with Spanish, and don't skip class, it's a part of your grade.
Mayra is by far my favorite professor at OU. She is the sweetest and genuinely cares about her students. There are assignments due 3x a week and projects every other week, but they are fairly simple. She uses LingroLearning frequently, a website that's $75. Participation matters in this class, lots of group practice.
She is an incredible professor! I took Spanish in high school and learned the material prior to the class, but was still a great class to review my grammar tenses and vocab. All of the homework is online and very manageable. The tests aren't too hard; review vocab and book readings. She is patient, caring, and loving! 10000/10 recommend this class!
Mayra is a sweet professor who makes learning Spanish fun. While participation is required, her grading is lenient. I found Unstuck study helpful for study prep.
Grade is made up of is textbook hw, exams, in class writing, and participation. It's not hard if you do the homework and really read the textbook before the lesson. She loves people to speak Spanish even if you make mistakes. She is also a very nice and understanding professor. . Would 100% take her class again
This is a professor where as long as you show up and pay attention you will learn things with ease. She wants you to develop and be better at speaking the language. Highly recommend for language gen ed.
