Nice and friendly but not overly helpful. Goes through slides quickly and does not post them online, nor does she record her class so make sure you attend. Never used to text book but used MyEconLab to teach myself most of the class. Ended up with an A- so I'm not complaining.
Good professor, She seems to really care about her students and she will make sure students understand before moving through the material. Read the textbook and do know the study guide questions and you should be able to get an A
easy just read the book and youre good. i think shes hot in an exotic way but that might just be me
OMG! Her class was amazing. She is very knowledgeable about economics and really cared about teaching us. I would have taken her ECON 209 the semester after, but I didn?t want to wake up at 8:35 AM. Her accent is sexy! Take her class if you can.
Great prof. She follows the textbook exactly, you don't actually have to go to class, but I always did. Be sure to read the chapters though, if you know them you will get an A no matter what. People thought the class was hard. My advice is to show up, take notes and do the readings.. Getting an A will not be a problem.
She has a very strong accent, which, for me, was very difficult to understand. I really wanted to take micro and macro, but she ruined economics for me. She follows the textbook EXACTLY so I guess if you memorize the textbook you'll be fine...
every time she would say agents I understood asians. made for some interesting lectures...
class is boring but jsut follow the book. if you do go to class, you can get through it by just staring at her
so hot.. even if her class sucks she's hot enough to make up for it
She's really thorough in the way she explains things and always willing to give up some of her time to help out her students. Yes it's true she doesn't post slides online but that's because you can learn everything from the textbook and she wants people to attend.
its very hard to pay attention during the lectures ;)
Lectures come mostly out of the book, so they're not entirely necessary. Tries her best to make things easier - sometimes it works. She's super hot, though. I didn't know economists could be that attractive.
She's incredibly hot. Even though she has an accent, she does try to make sure to that her students understand her. She also likes it when students ask questions a lot. She does tend to go through the slides quite quickly though.
The class itself isn't too enthralling, and she doesn't help much. She's a new teacher so she just sits there and teaches which makes it kind of boring. Use the textbook cause her slides only skim the chapters. Love her clothes though ..
She's a good teacher. Attend all her lectures because you will fall behind. She doesn't post her powerpoints and her lectures are not recorded so it's hard to catch up. Her accent is a bit hard to understand.
Take her over Paul Dickinson. She works hard at being a good prof and tries to meet a student's needs but I found myself just referring to the book and stopped attending lectures.
Decided to minor in Economics after doing this course. Prof goes directly from textbook in order so just sit in class and highlight the stuff she says. Really good prof works hard at it. Exam was tough make sure you know your stuff and study in advance
Hate this mandatory course but the prof was okay. She tried to explain the concepts thoroughly
Good teacher. Easy midterm, fair final. Just keep up with the material and you should do fine.
Great Prof! Draws graphs on the chalkboard, which in this modern age is hard to find. Attending the midterm review was the best decision ever - she explains concepts one on one and gives good tips for the final.
Lectures are straight from textbook. Multiple choice is easy, but she includes written questions on her exams as well which are very difficult. Other teacher only does multiple choice.
Good prof, very easy course. Follows the textbook.
Extremely easy course. Going into the course, I had taken zero economy classes and I didn't go to a single class all semester. I ended up going to a 2 day crash course and ended up with an A. Anyone can learn the material in a week max.
Great professor, cares about students and is very helpful. Multiple choice questions very straightforward but essay on the final were as complicated as they possibly could be. On that basis I would recommend taking class with a Prof that only does multiple choice.
Very nice and helpful. Lectures and concepts are always explained clearly. Provides students with a pretty good foundation in the basis of Economics.
A super sweet and interesting prof, wants to get the students involved and ask questions. She really cares about what she's teaching.
A really great prof!
Amazing teacher. Approchable, encourages students to ask questions. Great lecture presentations. Fair quizes and exams. Uses an online website to test students during lecture time and goes through its solution. Very good teacher. She posts all of the material on MyCourses. Slideshow is very well done. Lectures are interesting. Highly recommended.
great professor. loved her! very helpful. gold star for mayssun!
El-Attar doesn't teach this course very well. Don't go to class, it's useless. The textbook she uses (Ragan & Lipsey) is a joke. Takes 10 sentences before you understand what they're talking about. If you struggle in this class, take the crash course. It's SO worth it. Do the MyEconLab questions, and the ones in the book. Exams are based on those.
Very good teacher with very good explanations! Her lectures are clear, and she gives out all her powerpoint presentations in order to have good notes. An easy A in this course if you work regularly and practice in the study guide. RECOMMENDED
A very good teacher. She makes sure that students in her class have learned a chapters materials well before moving on. Her exams are quite fair. And she is quite available for consultation outside of class. I highly recommend taking her classes
The course can seem challenging if one does not read and practice the material regularly. The teacher is very nice, but not that helpful. Going to class is optional. But keep in mind that the textbook is very good and that one should read it carefully and practice in the study guide. If you do so, you can aim for an A. Good luck everyone!
to avoid your gpa will suffer. Not only its difficult to understand what she says because of her strong accent, but she is useless. she is only good to draw graphs on the board. Too much theory without practice. Regreted to have taken it with her.
She is a great prof who truly cares about her students. Super nice and helpful and while her accent is strong, she presents well and the slides are really useful. Took it as an elective and got an A. Tip: practice, practice, practice because econ is all about understanding and applying concepts not regurgitation.
Great prof! Gives you all the tools you need. If you need to review anything a lot of directly from the textbook which is super nice because half the time textbooks are never useful. Also loves to help you. Very friendly when you come for extra help. Highly recommended.
Disrespectful, she is a useless professor, she has a strong accent and explains really badly. The book is a 1000x better than her.
Granted, one must really focus to the prof to fully understand what she is saying however this made me focus even more on the material. She's extremely helpful and welcoming when it comes to one-on-one time with the students. She responds to emails within two days. Overall, she was definitively my best prof my first freshmen semester.
lectures whats in the book test canbe a little hard but you can do well in this class with effort. The grade you receive basically shows how much effort you put in
She is the best.
Mayssun's lectures were fun to attend because her accent is cool and she is possibly the most attractive prof you'll find. Ultimately, I ended up just reading the textbook instead because it was a fine alternative to going to class. I did poorly in this class because I thought I could cram in the last minute. Study in advance, friends.
She's not too clear, I found the textbook a lot easier to understand. She includes additional topics that she will only teach in one class on the exam. One great thing is that if you do better on the final than the midterm, the final will be worth 100%. Definitely take a crash course.
She is so helpful and sweet! You don't really need to go to class as long as you do the readings from the textbook. I highly recommend going to TA tutorial once a week and doing myeconlab if you want to get an A.
Accent aside, she is very clear as to what she teaches. It's economics, not rocket science, its the same everywhere so just read the textbook. I would supplement the text book with her help and some lectures, but not all. She also likes to teach certain concepts her own way, so watch out for "Mayssun specific" problems on the exams.
Incredibly helpful in office hours, slides posted were sufficient for learning the material. Very tough class in terms of content, but it is well taught and exams aren't impossible.
She's a nice lady and does her best to teach but the textbook is incredibly clear. So, I personally ended up not going to class and read the textbook.
Mayssun is a very nice and energetic teacher, but you need to be extremely focused during lectures not to lose track of the material. The textbook will cover gaps in your understanding, I personally stopped going to class and referred to the teacher for specific questions, which is what I recommend you do.
Not approachable, not understandable, and exams were very difficult. Relied on the textbook and did not properly teach the material.
Favourite prof at McGill and the reason I chose to minor in Economics exams are straightforward if you study the material you get an A. She teaches from the textbook but in class she does the problems step by step so I don''t recommend skipping. She''s super approachable and helpful If you haven''t taken her class yet what are you doing
She is one of those professors that you can tell cares about teaching. She does here best to make sure everyone is keeping up in lectures, but teaches right out of the textbook, so attendance isn't crucial.
She's a really sweet and helpful teacher. She has a different accent but you get used to it with time.
A good teacher. Knows her stuff. Accent is slightly different but totally understandable. Occasionally creates fun in class. You should attend lectures and understand what she says, and you'll easily get an A. Exams are mostly based on what she teaches and from slides, so attending lectures is a key. Always helps by email and in office hours.
She is quite clear and you can't help but respect her for speaking in front of 600 agitated students.
Tests are difficult and she uses the board quite often to mimic her ideas, but no one else understands what she is talking about. She confuses 200 level with a 600 level course, seriously her tests are for PhD students. if you do not have a strong knowledge in maths and economics, you will fail the course since she is very confusing . To avoid!
She's super nice and friendly, but her lectures are long and dry. She relies heavily on the textbook, making me feel like I could've taken the entire class straighyt of the the textbook, but such is the norm for Econ courses. Her tests are not too difficult. Would recommend for intro economics.
Amazing teacher, great lectures and appreciates hard work.
She is a very clear and understandable lecturer, despite her accent. She draws graphs and explains them after mentioning them in the slides which is very useful for understanding the material. I must respect her for maintaining clarity while speaking in front of a 1000 students. Expect a bit of reading on top of the slides.
Odds are if you have to take Macroeconomic Policy, you'll have her. I stopped going to class about 2 weeks in, her lectures were useless. Highly recommend getting the textbook WITH the MyEconLab login, tons of practice questions that were super helpful. There's two optional midterms, and one final. Ended up only doing the final and finished with A.
Prof. El-Attar is exceptional in so many ways. Not only is she a very smart lady, but she is also a beautiful person inside and out. Take the class, if not for the material, for the opportunity to see an amazing person twice a week. She truly is inspirational.
Overall, she's a great professor. She is a good lecturer and her slides are very easy to understand. She is always available after class and by email to explain a topic. There are no surprises on the midterm or final. Just study her lectures, go to class, and read the textbook and you'll easily get a good grade.
Love her! She's very animated and doesn't mind repeating stuff to help drill the concept through. Willing to help (office hours, e-mails, + lots of TA conferences/hrs also available). Midterm was easier than the study guide questions - just understand the concept, and read the textbook if need be. Occasional polling quizzes are also very easy.
Super nice and approachable!
I was only studying abroad at McGill for a semester and personally was not happy with many of my profs and classes, but Mayssun was an exception. She is so nice and usually makes the class laugh out loud at least once a lecture. I did not think the midterm was too hard, but I also went to all her classes. Would recommend!
she has a thick accent and is hard to understand. Class wasn't enjoyable very boring material. Midterm and final is the only thing that count towards your mark. Final and midterm also somewhat work against you and makes it hard to receive a good mark. if you are going to take the course you should go to class, as well as doing weekly practice.
I enjoyed her class. She knows how to teach, at least better than all my maths profs do. She teaches with passion plus micro is not that hard anyways.
Prof Mayssun seems extremely friendly and approachable, however her lectures are unbearable. I learnt more with youtube videos than going to class, be ready to teach yourself. The participation questions are an absolute mess and don't fairly represent your attendance. Midterm & final are fair but heavy content with the time constraint.
She has extremely heavy accent, and usually I cannot understand her courses. She is very kind and willing to answer all of your questions, but it's very hard for me to understand her accent. This is not a very hard course and you can learn by yourself.
Overall a solid choice. Definitely the best prof for 208/209. Extremely nice and caring; she will answer your questions during class. Very thick accent and boring lectures, and polling questions are not truly representative of your attendance. 95% of your grade is exams, which are very straightforward. Read the textbook, and you'll be fine.
She's the best professor of those available for intro Econ courses. She's solid all-around, relatively reachable, and pretty clear.
The course itself is insanely boring but she tries to make the content clear for everyone and is really sweet. Everything she talks about, and even the examples she uses are straight out of the textbook though so attending lectures is not a necessary component for this course. The final exam was tough though.
Not only does she make helpful powerpoints, but she walks through problems, calculations, and graphs in class. Certainly the best professor for introductory economics courses, and I would take any of her other classes. Be warned : She does grade on participation via Turning Point and her exams are not just multiple choice like the other profs.
I had her for ECON 208 last semester and I have her for ECON 209 this semester. Her class is straightforward, and she's the only prof I've had so far who actually will make sure people understand everything before moving on. She's one of the best teachers I've had so far, and it's obvious she cares about her students.
A pretty hard class. Study with the textbook. Lectures are not really necessary. The textbook is extremely clear and detailed. difficult material.
I rate all my profs regardless of experience. Despite the heavy access, she actually does care about her students and will be glad to help out if you need it. Attendance is not mandatory and even though the class is not recorded, 75% of the class did not go and all you really need is the textbook to do well. She will probably be your only choice.
Huge potential to be a great teacher, however lectures tend to be confusing and half of the class will either not show up or will already have fallen asleep. Accent will be distracting during first lectures. Final exam is impossible.
Amazing professor! She cares about her students, will always be willing to answer questions until everyone understands, lectures are clear and intuitive, and opens the floor up to students to contribute and answer questions, which makes an 8:30 am class much more bearable. Her class and passion for the subject made me really like economics!
Although many people think 208 209 are very easy, for students who never learned economics before (I know it's rare), these courses are not very easy to do well. And they are not bird courses at all. Study guide helps a lot, pay attention to details during exams.
Best prof for Econ208209 by far. She posts all the slides w the information you need (I stuck to those and didn't bother with textbook). Used to only be midterm(s) of 20-30% and final 60-70%, but now also has weekly quizzes which are good practice for the MC questions. MC heavy and some graphing, can be hit or miss. Depends how you do with that.
Mayssun is a really great teacher, but what she teaches is terribly boring (specially if you have already taken Econ). I don't doubt of her capacity to captivate students and make things clear, but sometimes the content itself is so useless that it makes you daydream. I would love to have her in an advanced ECON course. P.S: tests are kinda easy.
She is a great prof, the lectures are easy to understand, however, she does not teach how to apply any of the concepts. All the lectures do is summarize the textbook, which is great, but you can do the same by just reading it yourself.
If you wanna understand and follow the prof during lecture, you'd better read in advance. She explains things with examples which are quite clear and understandable, but always read textbook and practice study guide
She is so kind and gives such great lectures. you will not want to skip any lecture. i mean literally.
Maysunn is really sweet, but her lectures are honestly boring and her lectures, even the examples she does are verbatim, straight out of the textbook so at a certain point, you realize showing up to class is not necessary and you'll do just fine.
The textbook is both her best friend and your best friend. I showed up to pretty much every class - I probably didn't have to.
disorganized, mistakes in the exam, seriously
Mayssun is kind hearted and accessible outside of class. She is the better of the two main ECON 208 profs. However, lectures are extremely boring and not up to date. Willing to help students but not very lively nor engaging. There are only two main assessments: mid term and final, both of which were fair and covered the correct material, but hard
The Prof is very nice and accessible outside of class however her final was extremely challenging and in my opinion unfair. Beware that you will have to do a lot of work, I went to almost every lecture, but it seems that using the textbook would've been sufficient.
For ECON295 just save yourself some time and do not go to class. Do the econlab exercises and understand the slides. Easy exams, easy A.
Extremely easy class. The content is so easy you could literally miss every class and still get an A by reading the book and practicing through the study guide. Exams are a joke. EASY.
She really cares about her students. Slides and textbook are very helpful. Course materials may be very difficult if you don't have econ backgrounds.
Definitely the best econ prof. Explains things really clearly and is super knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches. This class wasn't super hard but I recommend reading the textbook ahead so you can follow along in class.
Literally haven't gone to more than five lectures this semester, as everything she covers is in the textbook. However, she has easy to understand slides and a pretty clearly outlined lecture.
She is very nice and encourages class participation (asking questions whenever you are confused). Her exams are very fair. If you're taking ECON 208/209 MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MAYSSUN.
SHE IS TERRIFIC!! Take her class if you can! She gives very great lectures and her tests are so much easier than the other profs. She has a little French accent but it didn't bother me at all. She really cares about students and is very accessible and helpful.
Caring professor with good explanations for topics. You don't have to go to class as her powerpoints come straight from the textbook. You can teach yourself the whole course. The final was difficult and took over a month to grade even though it was multiple choice. Overall would recommend, but you teach yourself and the exam is difficult.
Such a great prof. Mayssun is caring, gives great explanations and is very passionate about what she teaches. Her slides and examples come straight out of the book - but if you do your readings before class and then listen to what she's teaching, you won't have to study much after that. I highly recommend her.
Though the content is dry, Prof will make the lecture interesting. One of the rare ECON profs that I liked at McGill. Attendance is non-mandatory as the textbook is well done. Would recommend.
I am not kidding, this woman is amazing! Just listening to her Spanish accent make the lectures super interesting. She is ready to go back to old lectures is she feels that the class is a bit confused. Conferences are useless if you are good in basic math.
Mayssun is one of my favourite teachers here! You don't have to go to lectures, but I recommend it. She is engaging and cares about her students. Make sure you read the textbook and do practice problems! The only issue is how much the final is worth... 65% is a bit much.
It is very rare for an economics professor to understand what the student will not understand, however, Professor El-Attar Vilalta is not one of them. She is very clear in her explanations and takes the time needed to be sure that everyone understands the models. She made me love economics again. A brilliant professor.
I really don't think she did a good job this year. We covered way, way too much material, and she wouldn't explain the math behind anything so formulas were just "given", with a ridiculous amount to memorize. She had to rush it all because of how much we had to cover.
We were given way too much material to memorize. Also, she did not cover the math behind the topics so we have to just accept the concepts without learning it. I really don't think that she is qualified to teach 330.
Great at making university economics sound like high school material. Keep up with the lectures in the book and you will get an A. Fair class Best ECON208 prof
Mediocre prof, makes it harder than others. The worst of all is the final. Better take the other section which is way a lot easier!
Her lectures are summaries of the textbook chapters. Mid-term exam was hard, and the final was even harder.
Fiasco! A massive show of ego. Should stop comparing herself to 18 year olds for Gods sake
Textbook is your best friend and do as much as questions as possible. No need to waste time to show up to the lectures: her slides are copy pastes from the book, the material itself is pretty dry and she just repeats out loud. Final exam doesn't match with the difficulty of the slides or questions econlab offers, BEWARE.
Honestly she's like a ghost, never responds to emails and delegate a lot to her TAs.. then the TAs respond they don't have the answer. The midterm is easy but the final is very difficult.. had to teach myself with the textbook.
In a semester taking math 141, math 133, comp 202, and physics with Ragan. Somehow my lowest score by far was in Econ with Al Mayssun, her lectures were unclear the midterm was difficult, the final had some wizardry at the end. It was completley unfair considering I had friends in other sections who knew way less than me and got A's/A-'s.
A brilliant professor who truly cared about the subject matter and the audience. She really worked hard to simplify and explain the complicated topics of Macroeconomics. A true gem.
I took Econ 208 last semester. She is an amazing teacher who would explain everything clearly before moving on. She is really nice and willing to answer questions.
This professor does not teach, she PERFORMS. Honestly, one of the most engaging profs I ever had, and was teaching a class of 300+ people. You can tell she is truly passionate about Econ. She will go over anything people are unclear of and make sure everyone in the room understands.
She is nice and you can tell that she cares about her students. Unfortunately when I took it the class average was B- so she was being tough. But if you do textbook problems you will be okay. If you go to classes but don't do textbook problems regularly you will not succeed. Focus on learning on how to solve questions using a workbook textbook
Mayssun is a really knowledgable and passionate prof. She cares about her students and her lectures are very entertaining and she keeps you interested! Her exams can be somewhat difficult, but if you do many practice questions like she says, you are golden!
Mayssun's a good lecturer, she knows it. As such, she lectures WAYYY too fast (and I'm an ECON major), which makes you think you're getting the class, but you realize during the exam: you kind of got taught a little bit of everything. I would be completely OK with this, if her exam was not so dang detailed/deep. I recommend going to EVERY tutorial!
She goes pretty fast, but is a pretty good prof. Exams and tests are pretty straightforward- if you prepare, you'll pass. Definitely read your textbook and practice using the study guide to prepare for assessments. Don't rely on the lectures! the study guide is extremelyyy helpful as she gets a lot of her questions from there.
She is definitely the best prof for 208 based on what my friends in other sections said. Always made sure everyone understood the concept before moving on. Just read the textbook and do all the EconLab or study guide problems. The midterms were the same difficulty as those problems in my opinion.
Such an amazing prof! She really makes sure you understand all material before moving on & is the only prof that will answer every single question in the chat during the lecture. If you do all the econlab exercises you'll be completely fine for the tests however, opinion letter and open exercise are very difficult & rubric is extremely vague
Awesome prof! Even online. Prof El-Attar listened to our remarks on the midterms and adapted accordingly for the final. Econ208 really isn't that hard, if you work seriously. Grading was fair and the assignments were easy. I personally found Myeconlab to be way more useful than the textbook.
Very passionate and energetic when she teaches, and first midterm was fair, but opinion letter assignment was a mess and grading criteria was unclear even for the TAs. You'll need to study a lot from the textbook, study guide and econlab if you want to pass, because the exams are hard. She also never answered emails, very hard to reach her for qs.
She did not offer office hours or respond to emails, which was very frustrating because the TA's often did not have answers to our questions. Good lecturer but disorganized class structure and unclear grading criteria for projects.
She clearly did not care for her students. The grading criteria were not clear at all and far from fair. AVOID her (at least during online classes).
Disorganised. No support outside of class. Disorganised again. Sweet but theres close to none support outside of the lectures. Does not respond to emails. Leaves students behind:( considers feedback and suggestions
Prof. El-Attar gives good lectures but she is not accessible outside of class (didn't even have office hours).
Her passion outweighs the explanations. Concepts are not adequate to solve her questions and her way of assessing was brutal. 3 midterms in one month with one final and 9 quizzes. It's a crazy experience and her allowed time window was too short to answer all of her questions. The textbook sometimes explains better and has more practice.
She's very passionate about the material, which makes it easier to get through the lectures. There are many opportunities to practice, the quizzes are very helpful with that. The midterm/final were fair. I would take her class again for sure.
Wanna succeed in this class - Read the textbook chapter before class (It'll take 30min just do it) - Watch the lecture without looking at ur phone and make some notes and you'll be good (tbh shes v passionate so they're fun - do the practice problems in textbook (if you dont understand then ASK!) as for midterms: it was easy if you did that above
An amazing teacher, she dumbs down concepts to the degree a 5YO could understand, while still going at a pace interesting enough for those who do get it quickly. Very friendly, extremely open to questions (every second lecture is a Q&A session over the prev chapter), midterm was arguably too easy, no assignments. Taken as an elective, no regrets.
This teacher performs, but she has very little patience and availability. We had pre-recorded lectures on one day of the week for the content and then reviewed on the second day of class of the week, which was quite repetitive. Might as well do a direct lecture during the two times of the week. It is hard to understand her.
The teacher was just going over the textbook during her lectures, so we could just read the textbook at home and look over the lecture recoding if we needed more precision. One class a week was dedicated to a q&a so we could easily ask questions for her to go over. My Econlab was expensive but useful !! Good class overall
Loved her Lectures, explains well and always answers questions. She is very kind and her lectures are never boring.
Great lecturer, definitely puts on a show. She makes concepts easy to learn. Would definitely recommend it.
Great lecturer, definitely puts on a show. She makes concepts easy to learn. Would definitely recommend her classes.
Took my first econ class at McGill with Mayssun and though her previous reviews made me hesitant, I found her to be a wonderful prof. Her slides were basically taken right from the textbook, but her explanations were very clear and her Q&A classes were super helpful in clarifying complicated topics. The midterms were tricky but the final was okay.
She is very passionate about her teaching and likes to interact with students in the zoom, but she has a strange accent which makes some people have more trouble comprehending the content quickly. She goes through things pretty quickly, and the final was very difficult, some questions you even can't find a clue with things you learned before!
Standout lecturer, explains things very clearly. Not the grade I wanted but still ok; midterms were difficult; unforgiving grading scheme (65% weighted final); no Prof. OHs... yet, Prof. EA-V was def a highlight of online learning. To person below: it's completely inappropriate to pick on her accent & it definitely didn't obstruct her explanations.
You can get an A without attending the lectures or reading the textbook. She just reads the slides she posts so you can read those on your own. She didn't let us talk unmuted on zoom, we had to type every question in the chat which makes it difficult for her to understand and properly answer it. Wanted to do an econ minor and she changed my mind.
Her lectures were pretty useful and she clearly cares about the subject matter and her students. Definitely get Myeconlab and do the problems if you want an A.
Prof El-Attar gives very clear and concise lectures that prepare you very well for the midterms/exams, just make sure to do practice problems from MyEconLab and the textbook! The material tested is all taught in class and you won't be surprised by any of the questions on the midterms/exam.
This prof isn't good - she reads off her slides (which are summaries word from word of the textbook) so you can never go 2 class. She added 3 extra chapters to our exam bc we had time (when other profs told us not to study chapters to save our time). Her exam q's are from a guide so you can find all answers. No support but easy if u buy the guide
Not an econ person myself but I did appreciate her passion for teaching this course. Just put in the time and effort to study and practice the questions
Mayssun is honestly the best economics professor that I've ever had. I would 100% recommend her. Her slides are incredibly clear, she is so motivated to teach, and brings such amazing energy to the class. She is always there if you have questions and you honestly don't even need the textbook because she explains so well in class.
Good prof overall. She is very passionate and brings great energy to the classroom. She also relates back the content to real-world article, which I thought was useful. Exams are not too hard if you do some practices ahead
I personally find economics so boring, but you will never come close to falling asleep in this class. Mayssun is extremely enthusiastic and her lectures will always keep you wide awake. She makes economics feel easy to understand, which is a first for me. She's very knowledgeable on all the topics! (If you take this course, 100% use myeconlab)
Mayssun was a great teacher and really made me love macroeconomics. Would definitely recommend reading the textbook but her lectures are still engaging and helpful. Exams are very fair.
Fair exams but make sure to review your exams since there can be mistakes made during corrections, textbook is helpful in understanding the material (found the slides only had minimum info), understand of students and cares about them
Great professors that gives interesting lectures. She connects theoretical concepts to recent real life events which makes the class much more engaging. Exams were alright if you had practiced enough
One of the best profs I have had at McGill, somehow makes econometrics interesting and not scary. Would take every class with her if this was possible.
Great energy and fresh approach to teaching macroeconomics.
Super super kind prof, makes econ actually sound interesting. She engages with the class constantly during lectures and keeps you awake. But in general econ is hard! You have to study to understand. Ready the textbook and do the problem set exercises. She is very easy to ask questions to outside of class.
Anyone taking ECON 208 for their major/minor should take the course with Prof. El-Attar Vilalta! She is fast responding to emails and cares about supporting her students. As long as you understand the slides and rigorously complete the MyLab questions, you will do fine in this course.
funny but intimidating. must be terrific at teaching econ majors/minors. for ppl with 0 prior econ, it will be difficult to learn from her. spoke in big econ terms, lectures were like she was reading an econ dictionary. if ur rich and can afford 100$ worth of textbook + MyEconLab ur good. but otherwise, her teaching + slides + quizzes dont suffice
Everyone should take Econ 208 with Mayssun! I did quite poorly on the midterm however she was very generous and offered the class an alternate grading scheme (making the final worth 90%). Read the textbook before class so that the lectures make more sense. To study, I found that making summary sheets of my notes was more helpful than MyEconLab.
Midterm is based on the homework so it's not hard. I wish all of my classes were like this cause then the expectations would be clear and working hard on the homework would guarantee preparation for the exam. I think this class is supposed to be an easy A.
Professor El-Attar Vilalta makes ECON208 engaging and manageable. Attending lectures and completing the MyEconLab assignments are key to success. unstuckstudy can also be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. Overall, a solid class if you're willing to put in the work.
The content of the class is not very interesting but she tries to make it clear/funny, she's very passionate about what she does. A bit strict sometimes but not that bad, the problem sets are hard at first but after a few weeks you get the hang of it, it's very challenging at first but as long as you read the slides you're fine
Prof Mayssun is a very nice person. however, the lectures aren't the most helpful and the content is quite confusing (imagine a statistics course only taught through slides lol). her exams are fair but the problem sets take quite a bit of time and energy to do and aren't necessary to the final content
its her first time teaching this course but she alright. exams was extremely fair and similar to problem sets and midterm.
Big Chiller.
Genuinely a kind and passionate prof you can tell she wants to be there and teach. At time it is hard to keep up with her because it feels like she is teaching while gatekeeping something from us. All homeowrk and midterms are online and then you get slammed with an in person 3 hour final which is rough.
I can't say that is was a super entertaining/engaging class...
can get a bit confusing sometimes during the lecture but overall her slides are extremely good and midterms are a great preparation for the final. Exams were fair if you put a good effort into studying
Great slides that summarize everything. There were 2 midterms online of 15% each. The exercises in the slides and the extra ones help you prepare well for the final exam in person.
She was really nice & exams were soo easy. Midterms were both online and the final was so chill as long as you studied. I barely went to class/always left early and I finished with an A. Just do her assignments, understand her notes & examples, maybe do some practice problems from the textbook and you'll be good. Dw you got this
This was her first time teaching the course to be fair, so there were some units that were hard to follow. I would for sure recommend keeping up with the textbook, since you will only get so much out of the lectures. The online format of the midterms certainly helped, and the final was very easy.
grading is too hard for no reason, soooo much content and TA and prof take 10 years to reply to an email
Exam was so hard
I think she is a decent prof. However, the final was way too long. It looks like half the class didn't even finish. It would've been nice if she provided practice exams for the final as well.
exam was way too hard hopefully gets curved
She's so nice, and the exams r fair, midterms r online and final is very easy
She is the only person who could make econ interesting to watch. She lectures with more energy than the rest of the department combined. That being said, it's still difficult content and she doesn't make things easy (2 exams and one final are only grades), so pay attention to the lectures, use MyEconLab practice questions, etc. and you'll do well.
2 midterms( first one is MCQs+open answers question, second one is news article analysis). Final is the combination of 3 formats. Difficulty is higher than other prof, but super useful, I end up with an A, if u want to learn more insight of macro economics, take her( other prof only give multiple choice exam which is very boring)
She is amazing, I took Econ 227 and Econ 209 with her and get an A for both two courses
Mayssun's lectures are very engaging and captivating! I really enjoyed her teaching style. The midterm and article analysis were both pretty straightforward. I did not prepare well enough for the final. I recommend reading the textbook and practising all the questions on my EconLab to be successful! Take her section for sure!
you could tell she was really passionate about the class and she was a really good Prof. the midterm and article discussion were straightforward but the final was difficult.
Her lectures are engaging and very organized. She gives lot's of practice problems as well. You have to go to class as not all the information is thoroughly explained on the slides.
Wasn't the biggest fan of Mayssun's 209. I found the exams pretty tricky, especially the article discussion, which was vague and graded harshly. Feedback during the term was fairly lacklustre. She was, however, kind and passionate about economics and had entertaining lectures. Honestly preferred Dickinson's 208 to this though
Emailed her as well as her team of TAs through the semester multiple times and did not get any response. Not very accessible outside of class. Her exams are tricky and long. She is very passionate about what she talks about.
Going to lectures was pointless because the slides and the lecture process was so unnecessarily confusing. I just studied using the problem sets which is the only thing that helped understand what was even said in the lectures
Never responds to emails. Tests are tricky. Has an article discussion which was doable. Not much help received outside of class. Basically reads off the slides.
does not respond to emails
Be prepared to lose your social life if you take this course. the only material available to study for tests is textbook questions which arent the best. dont take this class if ur taking more than 4 classes max, it requires a huge amount of work and dedication. youre only graded on 2 midterms and a final so keep that in mind when taking this class!
She is really nice but her accent makes it hard to understand what she is talking about. The slides are so general and she rambles during lectures. The only way I have succeeded is using the 120 dollar online textbook to study. Only two test and a final for the whole grade as well. I highly recommend taking the other two teachers for this class.
*ECON 347, Amazing prof, loves it when you ask her questions during lecture. Slides and lectures are clear and well structured, and she tries to give lots of practice. The test can be challenging at times and does require studying the material, not a free A. But if you do the practice she gives and review the lecture slides well, you will do great!
Impossible to reach outside of class hours Slight accent, but manageable Kinda rambles on Reasonable exams Reasonable teaching skills (if you can stay attentive despite the rambling and repeating [and the minor accent]) Personally wouldn't take it again since I had to teach myself most of the material
kind and very passionate about the topic, however it was her first time teaching 313 so the lectures seemed a little unorganized. can also be sort of hard to understand. 2 midterms worth 25% and final worth 50%, but they were very reasonable and doable if you prepared. doesn't respond to emails.
Respectfully, I used to find it so tough to stay awake in her class. She's cute and tries her best but she's basically reading off the slides. Good thing the content of the class is easy, otherwise I would've been doomed :) overall, 7/10. Would take again (if its an easy class)
