Dr. Rojas is great. She's compassionate and very knowledgable. She expects alot but it's worth it. I learned so much I never knew or thought about.
very interesting, and intelligent, I had her over summer for three and a half hour classes and enjoyed our class, even though it was long the time went by fast and wasnt boring.
shes a good teacher, you must show up to class and participate in discussions. if you go to class and read prior, you will do just fine, A or B. i dont think shes hard at all, because she explains issues well and you will remember. i dont no if it makes a difference but i had her for winter sessio
Really good professor. Interesting class discussions, as well as material for class.
A COOL CLASS. BUT SHE MAKES EVERYONE TALK ABOUT CERTAIN IDEAS AND TOPICS WAYYYY TO MUCH. SHE ALSO MAKES IT WELL KNOWN IF SHE DISAGREES WITH WHAT SOMEONE HAS SAID. SHE'S NICE, BUT COULD USE SOME TEACHING TIPS.
One of the best teachers....She really enjoys teaching. She is very nice, and loves to listen to what people think. Assignments are easy, extra credit is offered and test are all written.Make sure to participate, counts as 10% of grade.
This professor was ok. She was very difficult because she wanted everthing specific. She knows her stuff but at the same time wants too much from us. I thought the class was really boring because all we do is have discussions and she seems rude at times. I would not request this class at all!! She grades really hard which is why she offers so much
LOTS of reading. Must participate in class. There are Beachboard assignments. It's a very interesting class and she's a good teacher. But if you want an A, you have to work for it. There's lots of opportunity for extra credit.
She's one of the best professors at The Beach, by far. She is also a very fair grader. Just do your work.
Dr. Rojas is one of the best professors I have had so far, she really knows her stuff. All the reading, the two papers, the beachboard assignments were relevant and interesting and her lectures were phenomenal. A must take professor!
she'll let you know when she doesn't agree even if she's wrong. tried to embarass me in front of the class one day and said i never read even though i read everything. if it's not the answer she want's then it's not right. remember that
She is the best in this department. She is understanding and will take the time to talk to you about any issues. She will get you prepared for graduate school and life in the real world.
One of the best professors I've had. She really knows what she's talking about and gets everyone involved in class discussions. Class topics are interesting and relevant to issues in today's society. Her teaching style is great because the information really sticks. Highly recommended!
This teacher expects a lot in a short amount of time. She seems really nice, but she has her own ideas about things and doesn't take a differing opinion very kindly. Instead of simply challenging someone else's idea she seems to take offense to it, which might have more to do with her young age. I do have to say that the books she recommends are really good ones that I might not have otherwise gotten a chance to read.

i've read some really good books in her class this semester but i feel like she gives us way too many papers and that they're all reptitive. i also don't like how she calls people out in class, she can come across as very ****y. she knows her stuff, but i don't think i'd take another class with her.
she is the worst teacher I ever had. advice don't take her!
She is okay But I will think about taking another class with her she thinks that she is the S****T. iT IS HER WAY OR NO OTHER. There is alot of reasing and her midterms are sort of hard ther is alot of memorizing. I personally would think of taking another class with her.
she is a good prof. her expectations from are reasonable. i learned a lot of useful material. the midterm and final are writing.
Like the other reviews on her, she is difficult and does expect a lot from her students. Don't expect to sleepwalk through her class and do well, actually do the work, read the materials, and learn from the discussions. One of my top classes at CSULB.
Clear and intelligent young lively lady, the class material was intense and real, and she is engaging, and very fun. Her teaching style was wonderful and she has a presence that is fascinating. I'de take it again in a heartbeat ;)
Boring class in general, too bad its required. She makes you do the reading and actually has a final for the class. She did let us out early tho so i suggest an evening class.
Although this was a great class, it was more like an English LIT class than a women's studies one. There were 4 novels to read and a few papers to write. However at the midterm there was only 1 paper and a midterm done. So in the last half of the class you read a full novel, analyse it and do 3 more major assignments.
Uninteresting material. All she cares about is hearing the opinions of students. If you care AT ALL about actually learning, be prepared to miss out in her class. Waste of a class. You won't learn a thing.
Okay class. You read a lot. I didn't read the last book at all and still got an A. I skimmed over the readings for class. I didn't say mcuh, but made up for it my papers. Just write you papers like the class discussions and you're fine. Midterm was easy, just do the study guide. Final was super easy and so was the film presenation.
i dont really dislike prof roja but i would think twice before taking any other class with her, that dosnt mean that she is a bad teacher; she is a fine prof. she gives short ans in exams.the part that i didnt like abt this class was she shows movie in class and then asks detail questions about it on her exams.suggestion:take detailed notes in clas
I took her in Summer '07. This class changed my perspective many issues still faced today. I LOVED THIS CLASS & still think about what I've learned. She was an awesome teacher; material was very real and intriguing. Take her for a great capstone, you'll learn a lot. Not hard at all, just a lot of memorization.
Professor Rojas is an amazing teacher. This was one of the best classes I've taken so far. She really knows how to engage the class in the material and really knows her stuff. I took this for summer and we had two papers about 3-5 pages and a couple tests. She grades fairly and because the topics are really interesting, its not that bad.
Be prepared to be overwhealmed with reading! their good readings just A LOT of them! Gives pop quizes, beachboard assignments, midterm, final, and a paper as well. Full packed class!! Good Luck!!!
GREAT! take her...she is amazing! You do alot of reading, but makes your time worthwhile, her discussions are so interesting! one of the best professors ive taken:)University 100..over summer attendance is mandatory
You will work, but you will also enjoy this hard working professional. She is inspiring and incorporates tons of interactive projects.
Dr. Rojas is a good prof. She picks interesting materials and is big on discussion. If you don't like attending class don't take her, she will bust your chops. I felt bullied one day when I didn't read the right material and she embarrassed me. However, she has a passion for teaching and is interested in the opinions of her students. I recommend.
She often asks for students opinion and tells them that their opinion is wrong. If Dr. Rojas asks for your opinion you should just answer what she wants to hear.
I agree with the first comment. You express your ideas and insights to her and if she does not like them, she tells you they are wrong. It's like you can never satisfy her! It's like anything you say to her is not good enough-what does she want?! She embarasses you too even if you only make a little mistake. Her class is primo in boring!
This class is very boring. She doesn't do anything to liven up the class. She doesn't even give us class work. Just quizzes when she feels like it. She calls on the same students who's comments are sooo long and sooo boring. I find myself drawing cartoon characters for half an hour on my notebook because of this boring class.
I thought this class was going to be exciting when I signed up for it but unfortunately it wasn't. This class is very intense. She lectures straight for all 4 hours and yes-they are very boring. She never even lets us work in groups like she promised us once. I am only enduring this class to fulfill my capstone requirements.
Rojas is very encouraging and doesn't condemn her students' opinions when they don't concede with her own. From my observations, she merely expresses frustration when they fail to elaborate on their responses or are so off base you wonder if they've even been listening in the first place. My advice to you critics is that you think before you speak.
She is a good professor. I have to be honest though because at first I thought she was a professor who was always critical and hard on her students, but today I finally realized that she really is a nice lady who really loves and encourages her students. I give her an A for that but still she could liven up the class by adding more class activities
She is a great professor. She cares a lot about her students and welcomes all insights. She is generous in grading because just trying your best is already thev road to success in her class. I did not like taking notes all period though but the films she showed us made up for that and also some of those beautiful passages she made us read.
She is what an academic professor should be! Challenges her students to be critical and provocative both intellectually and in paper. She is precise and effective in her teaching methodology. For some, she may seem intimidating, in reality, she's extremely helpful, warm and cares tremendously about her students progress and success! Recommended!!!
can keep a discussion going which is nice. shy or disinterested people might not like her teaching style. so much reading and essays...ugh. but very friendly and really looks out after you.
Dr. Rojas is probably one of the nicest professors I have ever had. She truly believes in her students and pushes them to be critically aware instead of just relying on generalizations. Her classes are not necessarily easy "A"s , but are more concerned with providing an overall learning experience. Discussion is an important part of the class.
Dr. Rojas is a fabulous professor. She has a passion for education and has full faith in her students. She encourages critical thinking and discussion in class. Therefore you must attend class, otherwise you feel left out because a lot of issues are discussed. The topics are always interesting so there never was a boring day for me in that class
This class was easy. Attendance counts for your grade. You could get an A in this class without going to class and just reading the book because class is mostly discussion. I didn't feel like she really taught me anything I got 100% and 95% on the tests because I did the study guides.
One of the best professors on campus! I've enjoyed the class discussions in her class. She encourages her students to use what they've learned in other disciplines and apply it to whatever subject one is studying without unconsciously projecting a particular bias to the subject. Take her courses! She is beyond awesome and extremely helpful!
Definitely not an easy class to walk in. A lot of lecturing and note taking. Not something I would retake ever; it is only for some people. Test are not easy unless you study. I am a hard working student and I would stress about her quizzes. She's a tough teacher and genuinely nice. Will pick on you to answer questions and loves class participation
Dr. Rojas is a very friendly and nice professor. You write three essays which require a lot of critical thinking, but that is what the class is all about really. There are 2 quizzes with a final that requires A LOT of studying. She makes the class really interesting and you definitely learn a lot. The class was not so easy but I enjoyed it.
This course is HARD, but interesting! Includes midterm & final (both have to write it out - not enough time!), beachboard assignments (6 total), critical essay (6 pages) and attendance. The course is loaded! Too much material!!! Dr.Rojas is a tough grader! If you forget the book or print outs, she'll scold you in front of everyone. :(
I encourage others to take this class, her guidance is priceless! Esp if u are trying to decide what to do w/your WGSS degree.Helpful & inspiring, a totally underrated professor! Goes the extra mile for her students. Although it seems like a lot of work, the assignments are easy, just stay on top of them. No tests, more about personal reflection.
she's a passionate teacher and goes into deep discussions, attendance's a must cuz most of the class is based on inclass discussions instead of notes.the book's used a lot so do the readings! she's helpful but a tough grader.not necessarily recommended as a beginner class but fun and interesting. u'll get an A as long as u understand the concepts
I appreciated her honesty. She comes off a little bossy, but she is just organized. She is an overachiever who seems to expect the same from everyone, so this is a little intimidating. Other than that, 496 was an easy class. You have to perform 40 hrs. service outside of class, lots of readings and journals but nothing excessive. ok class.
Professor Rojas is hard but fair and you will definitely learn and get something out of her classes. It is clear that she loves what she does. She is always organized, engaging and interesting. You will not do well if you aren't prepared to give the same back to her, but such a fresh air to have a teacher who cares and wants to teach.
Bring your book!! Never attend a class wout it. She will call you out and make you feel horrible if you don't have the present book you are reading. If she asks for feedback, make sure it's something she would agree with. She will asks for your opinion and if it is not agreed with, she WILL let you know. i.e... "Not really." "More like..."
Loves to self promote. She is always right. If you don't regurgitate what is in the book (she wrote most of the class materials BTW) then don't bother speaking. Biggest brain drain I had all semester. She loves to be at the head of the class preaching -lecturing- for the entire class period. She will ask for your input and cut you off immediately.
This professor puts words in your mouth when you try to express an opinion or view of a topic discussed in class. She also doesn't go deep in the nitty gritty of theory or information while demanding a "textbook", carbon copy answer of what she discusses in class, which is a little more than annoying, since she teaches her class in a subjective way
Dr. Rojas is a tough teacher. But she is a GREAT teacher. She assigns a lot of reading, but it is all worthwhile reading. I learned so much from her and personally grew after taking her class. She cares about her students and encourages everyone to think and not just repeat what is read. She challenges her students to think critically.
She's a great professor! If you are lazy then you shouldn't take her class. She seriously cares that her students learn from her class. I have to say she taught me the most in a class I didn't realize would teach me so much. I HIGHLY recommend.
Make sure you go to every class and do at least one extra credit. Other than that, enjoy it. This was one of the most eye-opening courses I have ever taken. She really makes the material come alive.
While there's a lot of information, this class helped to further structure my view of feminism and I learned so much. She encourages a lot of class discussion, so don't be afraid to speak up, but it can get a bit intense at times!
She knows what she is talking about and in great detail. But, she displays her frustration with the class' lack of participation for every question that she asks, which often deters her students from wanting to contribute. Some of her questions, on the exams, were worded in a confusing way and when asked for clarification, she said try your best.
Good teacher. For a four-teacher course and her specifying in Chicano studies, she has the most interesting lectures! She also gives out extra credit! Only downside is that her questions on the exam can be confusing and worded weird.
There is a lot of reading for this class, so prepare yourself in advance to cover it all. She also gives reading check tests to ensure you're reading the assigned material. They are good readings, but they just take time. There are no actual tests besides the reading tests. The papers are intense and cannot be done last minute. Loved this class.
Pofessor Rojas could come off as intimidating when asking for students participation, but she really has high expectations of her students. Do not recommend taking her if you aren't prepared to keep up with reading articles in addition with book material. No tests. Gives essay questions that definitely take effort to complete.
Pros: Lectures are engaging; you'll learn a lot about Chicanx history. She gives helpful feedback to essays. Nice, respectful. Cons: Must attend class everyday to not miss any potential quizzes, it does affect your grade. Don't be fooled by her sweet smile and cute outfits, she's a tough grader, but for a good reason. Read and take notes routinely.
Honestly professor Rojas likes to hear herself talk and cuts students off. She makes ignorant comments like how pathetic you dont know that and brings students down. If your opinion doesnt match her opinion, you are automatically wrong
I would not take Proff Rojas again. She belittles her students and makes them feel stupid by saying things like "how pathetic are you".The entire class she just talks, and will often cut students off when they are answering a question just so she can talk more. She hands out an excessive amount of readings and disregards you have other classes.
I LOVED this class. Amazing professor, you'll definitely learn something new every lecture. Participation and attendance matters! The more you participate in class, the more you'll understand the content. Every minute counts in that class and Prof. Rojas will lecture till the very last minute given all the content.
the class itself was cool; she was not. funny that for a course exploring sexism/power imbalances she was the representation of tyranny (belittled those who disagreed with her via smart remarks).i would never take a class with her ever again. she needs to reexamine her pedagogical approach to make this class as effective and dynamic as it should be
Heads up this class is 4 professors in one and only consists of 3 exams as the only source of your grade. If you get one bad grade it brings your whole grade down. Extra credit opportunities but they make you work for it. They give you study guides but then don't go over it well in class, they say you can answer it from the readings. Good luck ;(
To those majoring in Liberal Studies, I pray for you all. There are 4 professors with completely different teaching styles and only one of them is good (FYI, it's not this one). Her lectures are not too bad, not too great either, but she words her questions on the exams so differently!! Be careful from her :(
Honestly, it wasn't the professor but it was the class. The class consist of 4 professors which made it hard because they all have different teaching styles. No textbook is required but readings are on BB. Only 3 exams. You need to really pay attention to the questions because they are very wordy and confusing. Good luck!
This class was neither bad nor good. First, she asked us to buy an online platform for our discussions when discussion boards on BB are free. She assigns you weekly terms and concepts but it can only be defined by her own terms, so I suggest you listen and take notes on what she says. This class is okay and it wouldn't necessarily hurt you
I signed up for this class expecting to be about Hispanic culture, but we learned about all races but Middle Eastern. She treats the course as if everyone will become an activist and that most arent taking it for a GE. The reading assignment sometimes is a lot. Also, most of the definitions she gives are hers and from her book, not other sources.
She has weekly PackBack assignments where you must come up with your question with resources from each week she assigns. There are articles, book readings, videos, and podcasts. Some quizzes are based on her definitions which are long and confusing. Instead of explicitly being about Chicano studies, it is about everyone.
Honestly, Rojas is a very passionate professor and clearly cares about the material that she is teaching. However, there is a lot of work for a GE so be prepared to devote time to this class despite the work not being very difficult. Overall pretty solid professor as she is very nice and did talk about some interesting subjects.
Professor Rojas is a very passionate professor but can come off a little rude sometimes. For a 100 level class it is a lot of reading, this class requires 7 books that you will read throughout the semester. Yes, she makes you read all 7 books. Attendance and participation is mandatory. Tough grader but will help you if you go to office hours.
Dr. Rojas give a lot of work and has you buy a lot for a GE course. She has you buy her own book and a platform to do discussions even though discussions are free on beach board. She is also condescending towards students. Avoid taking the course with her.
Professor Rojas, overall she's an okay professor but I wouldn't take her again. She makes you buy her personal book and read the hole book and that's what the final is mostly about. You also have to post weekly discussion post on a website you have to buy. I took the class to learn about chicanos and didn't even learn much. I say don't take her tbh
I cannot express how much i dislike this Instructor. The first day of school she showed us what type of person she is. Commonly yelled at the tech guys who could not help her out with her busted computer(when she was the one with 87 tabs open). She is rude and will call you out.
Save your money, and avoid Dr. Rojas at all costs! You've been warned. She is by far the worst professor in the CSU system. GE courses are famed for being over the top, and Dr. Rojas really seals the deal for fitting that build. Take this course at a CC you won't regret it!
honesty just a bad professor. Really hard to like and she has obvious favorites. if this class was not a requirement for the chicano studies major, i would have dropped it . save ur bag. chose another course.
It was a nice class, I feel like I learned quite a bit. The homework is not on canvas, but on packback. It uses AI to see how good your posts are, you have to get a 55 and up for credit. Start working on your study guide for the final as soon as it's posted cause theres 69 terms to study😵‍💫 this class has a LOT of material to go over for a GE ngl
I wouldn't recommend taking this course. Awful professor who does little to communicate with the class and is incredibly lazy. Awful course lectures which are recycled from years ago. A horrible grading system for what is supposed to be a fun project in the social media assignment. And overall just a bad experience of an online class.
I am now an alumni of CSULB. I decided to look up Dr. Rojas because I still remember how ashamed I felt in her class. She mentioned something of my appearance in front of everyone and other things. It was always meant with harsh criticism or hostile tone. Reading these comments is validating because I thought I was the only one she didn't like.
I call her Maythee because I've built a relationship with her since finishing my bachelor's in 2021. I'm a first-year teacher with a master's-credential. She's very kind—do the readings and ask for clarity, she'll guide you. The class has four different professors, each with their own style.
