Professor Flack is systematic and technical in his approach and teaching methods with oil painting. He will facilitate growth in your ability at every skill range. I am grateful!
Professor Flack is a masterful figurative artist. He shares his mental models for "shorthand" necessary information to convey light and form in drawing. My work has improved greatly, not only in technique but taste and design. This Figure Drawing course has also enhanced my methodology for painting and perception. Thank you, Mcgarren!
(the class was actually ART 3910R but it wasn't there to select :/ ). The teacher's biggest strength is his honesty and feedback. Very enthusiastic about his craft and is willing to help you as much as possible. overall solid teacher.
Flack requires a solid amount of homework each weekend so prepare to time manage because you will not succeed if you procrastinate. He is strict in what he expects of you and holds you to a higher standard but it's because he wants you to be able to produce high quality artwork. He is a great professor to have if you want to become a better artist.
He is a really good teacher and he holds you to being better and doing your best. There is around 4 hours of homework every week and this is very important for your grade. He gives very good feedback and his class has a very good environment and vibe. Work hard but also have fun this is genuinely an awesome class.
A thorough, clear, and organized professor. He expects his students to give an honest effort. He is always willing to help, give feedback, and answer any questions.
Professor Flack is very skilled and knowledgeable. He is never shy about his feedback and support for his students. However, I don't recommend taking this class if you fall into one of these categories; Just taking the class for credits toward your major, have no previous experience with analogue painting, or creative freedom is important to you.
Flack is a very honest professor. He will tell you what you need to hear about your art and it is hard for him to see the good things in your art because his own art is very good. His feedback was good though and strengthened me as an artist. There is 4 hours of homework every week and he gives a grade he thinks you deserve.
Overall I took this class for fun to learn oil painting and while there is a lot of homework and sometimes grading can be a bit tough. He gives great feedback and gives the opportunity to work on the assignments after first grading to be able to earn more points back overall I enjoyed the class a lot. Definitely recommend this course to try it out.
McGarren Flack is an awesome teacher. I learned a lot in this class, both about art and other life subjects. He is very knowledgeable, and shares that knowledge freely. The class is pretty fast paced so be ready for that. He expects you do the required 4 hrs of work outside of class, but you'll need it to finish the assignments.
McGarren is one heck of a professor, McGarren knows his stuff. SO be prepared to set your pride and ego aside, and learn to do real art and laugh along the way. Hes is not an easy A but you will learn more about art and other random facts more than you ever thought you could.
McGarren is an amazing professor and I learned a lot from his class. It is not for the faint of heart, I've taken several McGarren classes and each requires full dedication in class and 3 times the dedicated out of class on homework. Never a week off with his classes. McGarren is very perceptive about each students skills.
Professor Flack is very knowledgeable in Photoshop and how to use it to paint effectively. This class was very fun!
Professor Flack is skilled, knowledgeable, and shares his understanding very well. Utah Tech's art department is a little-known powerhouse for the representational artist. McGarren is a prominent factor in that foundation. If you want to increase your understanding, his classes may very well be along your path.
McGarren is so awesome! He made class very engaging. He cares about each and everyone one of his students. If you are having issues he will sit down and help you.
Good professor, just make sure to show up and do the minimum on the work.
He cares about his students learning and well being
He is seriously the best! He's great at giving feedback throughout your pieces. As well as gives you the chance to fix and re-submit them for more points.
Such a nice guy! I really liked this teacher. Be prepared to do lots of homework. If you don't have an ipad at home then you are going to live in the class room after hours to get your assignments all done. He gives great feedback but sometimes I didn't want to make the changes he wanted me to but I would anyways so I didn't get docked points.
He is the best professor; he is nice and friendly, always available to help students, and his feedback is always helpful. He gives a lot of homework, but it is worth it; you learn a lot of things by doing it. His classes are fun.
As a beginner oil painter I wish he did more demos in class. He provided a lot of videos but I would've rather watched and asked questions while he was painting. Overall good teacher !
The only thing that was difficult was that there was always homework on the weekend which conflicted with my other art class homework. I thought he was a fair grader and gave good feedback.
Everyone says he is incredibly difficult but it's not that serious. You actually have homework you can't bs. He will make you a better artist and gives great feedback. Go to class and try your best and you'll get an A.
I think that this class was pretty fun. But one thing is that I felt like he was a little too harsh with the criticism, at least in my experience. It felt a bit attacking and made me a bit unmotivated to do the other assignments knowing its not good to his standards.
I wouldn't recommend taking his classes if you aren't an art major. If you're looking for an easy A or a filler class, he's not the teacher for you. But if you take art seriously, he is totally fantastic! He was engaging, hilarious, and cared about student's learning. He definitely wants the class to be as good as it can be. Definitely recommend!
A good professor who mixes what we are learning with real life experience. He has a lot of experience when it comes to applying your art after school. He makes sure that we are doing everything to benefit ourselves, and not to make busywork. Be prepared to study! Not a filler class, but for serious art majors. Highly recommend. Used the textbook.
Informative
He's a tough cookie and very point on when it comes to perfection. He is hard to grab for help, but once you do he can be great when it comes to helping. He is a fun guy, loves to make jokes and do silly things around the class.
He's a tough cookie but a great teacher. While he may be tough on accurate on anatomy, he does try his best to make you understand with hints and catchy phrases. He is a fun guy just..tough, heh.
You will learn a lot from Professor Flack. He is tough, but fair. Although I am not a very good painter, I improved so much. If you want to learn the basics of painting the correct way, this is a great class. If you are looking for an easy A and do not really care about learning, I would choose a different class. Also, he is pretty funny.
This professor is very knowledgeable in oil painting and was willing to answer any questions students had without making them feel like they are inconveniencing him or should know the answers.
Amazing professor! He knows so much about what he is teaching. Really is a professional in his craft. Highly recommend if you are looking to learn and challenge yourself.
Prof. Flack shows enthusiasm for the subject and demonstrates expertise. He creates a fun atmosphere. Come on time and ready to work. His homework requirements help students develop their skills.
I really enjoyed his intro to oil painting class and would recommend it. There was a lot of things you had to buy for it but in the end it is worth it if you are wanting to continue oil painting.
Definitely got better at painting
Great professor! Very experienced and knowledgeable. Sets up class work and homework to maximize your development as an artist. Encourages you to do your best and helps you understand how to improve! Great at communicating and answering questions!
Mr. Flack is an excellent instructor. He has high expectations but that should be expected when learning from such a master oil painter such as Mr. Flack. He is very helpful but also pushes you to apply what you learn. He expects you to participate and attend class. I was very fortunate to have been allowed to take his intro to oil painting class.
Has a very good understanding of what is being taught so any questions are easily answered Easy to talk to and gives lots of good feedback on projects
Mcgarren is one of the best professors I have ever had. I would highly recommend taking his class if you want to become a successful painter. He is hilarious and gives great feedback. Participation is 100% needed to be successful in this class and you will need to be prepared to spend several hours a week painting but it is so worth it!
McGarren is a cool and fair and teacher. He'll give you help if you're willing to help yourself. He doesn't coddle students and gives his honest opinion. Don't take this class unless you're prepared to spend hours and hours working on projects outside of class. Like 100+ hours outside of class if you want a good grade.
Sometimes was very frustrating recieving a grade for amount of feedback given. Learned a lot though.
Professor Flack is one of the best instructors out there. His ability to adapt and hold the student to a standard at the same time is amazing. I recommend his classes for individuals who want to learn a skill and develop.
McGarren Flack is a phenomenal painter. He puts in a great amount of effort to ensure a student's success. Being able to study under him is an honor. Not only does he help one become a better painter, but he inspires growth as a person. If one wants to learn a skill and grow they should take a course from him.
A great understanding of the material, and he expresses it clearly. Very willing to spend time with each student and improve understanding, and respectful while doing so. Uses interesting and valuable assignments to contribute to understanding of the core concepts.
McGauran is a great teacher. All of his advice was really helpful and I learned a lot from him.
Great at creating an environment that encourages learning. He teaches difficult classes, but a lot can be learned from him. If you want to take art seriously, take McGarren.
McGarren is good professor, but sometimes he would go on and lecture us about things that had nothing to do with the class. It was usually some philosophy, health tip or Elon Musk.
McGarren is an incredible artist with an extensive knowledge of anatomy. He challenges you which has helped me grow immensely. His classes are informative, and he is helpful. The class has a lot of necessary homework and projects that will ensure that you know the material. I would highly recommend taking his classes if you are serious about art.
McGarren really knows his stuff! I am very grateful to have taken this class. Despite having experience in painting before this class, I learned a lot that has made me a better painter and has increased my understanding of the medium. i would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to go into painting and take it seriously.
The way he explains things lands in my brain in a way that REALLY makes sense. His feedback and lectures provided actionable direction that improved my paintings dramatically. I was nervous that he would be stern but he isn't at all. I can't wait to take more classes from him. 10/10 recommend to anyone who wants to improve and enjoy the process.
McGarren sees the potential in his students and I'm very appreciative of that. It is not a fun-free-painting-to-express-yourself class, it's taught in a way to help students understand how to mix colors, recognize value change and paint in shapes that render into the actual image. You also might learn some random facts about fruits and other foods
The professor does great in explaining to you the fundamentals and break down of the human body. And any questions you may have he's happy to answer them.
McGarren Flack is a great professor ! Before I took this class from him I heard that McGarren was pretty tough and harsh. But I didn't get that at all. If he seems harsh it's only because he wants to help his students become better. I definitely recommend his class to everyone.
McGarren is organized and communicates clearly what he expects of students. He gives constructive feedback and is always willing to answer questions. He is knowledgeable and knows how to break concepts down so its easier to explain to students.
Mcgarren is amazing at working with you where you are at and he takes time to help you improve your skill set. Make sure you do you homework and the reading and it will be one of your most beneficial semesters
A good class to take if you want to learn how to imply real life images to digital.
He is a good professor and offers great advice in that to helps students create better artwork.
Very knowledgeable professor. Most of the work is done in class time and very beneficial to painters who want to learn more about their mediums. I enjoyed how the class was laid out and the workload was not overwhelming.
McGarren Flack is an amazing professor! He's hilarious and very informative. But beware-- do NOT take his classes in the hopes of any easy A's: he expects your best effort all the time. He will challenge you to be able to do your best work.
McGarren Flack is the best! You will learn a LOT and you WILL be challenged in his classes.
He's really helpful throughout your projects, ensuring you're on the right track for success. Uses the class to vote on what project to continue with after thumbnails which was fun and interesting!
He is very easy to get a long with and is always willing to help if you ask. When he teaches a new skill or technique he makes sure no one gets left behind.
Great Professor to take if you like a well structured class that has all the Grading criteria so you sorta know what grade your going to get with each assignment. Lots of homework but if you follow what needs to be done each class period you'll surely will be able to keep up.
He gives great, honest feedback to help students improve. He gave about 4 hours of homework a week in the class I took. Very helpful and willing to answer any questions.
If you are a devoted artist there is no way you will not enjoy McGarren. He may be among one of the more difficult professors but that is only because he knows as an artist you must put your best foot forward to be successful. If you show up to every class with a desire to improve you are bound to have a greater knowledge at the end of his courses
I am a not an art major, the class is difficult but the professor helps every one in the class by giving meaningful personalized feedback. After taking his class my art skills and understanding of art have improved significantly. 10/10 would recommend taking classes from McGarren
Professor Flack is an incredible instructor. He is very knowledgeable and experienced with the course material and is able to articulate what he knows very well. He gives great feedback and will push you to do your best. He is very straight forward and honest with his feedback which I like.
Mcgarren is objective in his evaluations and knows how to lead people to pinpoint their own problems, as well as teaching how to effectively solve them.
Mcgarren is good at pushing people to improve their skills in a kind and constructive manner.
McGarren's digital painting class was so much fun and I learned a lot in just one semester of taking his class. His critiques in class are very helpful and I found that I improved my digital paintings by quite a bit just through this class. I would absolutely take another class from this professor!
McGarren did so much to help my art, both directly for digital painting (this class) and also indirectly for other art projects I've been doing in other class. He always strives to help you do better, and his critiques are always something I look forward to. Insanely helpful and insanely nice!
Professor Flack is an incredible professor who really knows his stuff. He backs up his skills as an artist with an extensive knowledge of the materials that are used in fine arts. He has an answer to every question I have and is very thorough in his lectures and demonstrations. He makes this class really fun but is serious. Take it seriously.
McGarren is the kind of professor you want to take if you want to improve. He gives amazing feedback as you work on your drawings and clearly explains what he is looking for. I found him approachable when it came to troubles/questions I had, even though I couldn't explain what I was thinking very well, he was very patient and understanding!
This class by McGarren is his most relaxed class. He is good at competently teaching about the materials in the class. He is good at giving to those who want more comprehensive information and also those who just want the most simple answer.
Artist Materials and Methods with McGarren is beyond valuable to anyone who is serious about making art. In some ways its a pretty easy class but attendance is mandatory and everyone is still expected to do a good job. The only thing that I didn't love is that he wants work to be representational and takes off points if it isn't. 10/10
I have learned more in Intermediate Drawing than any other art class so far. There aren't any assignments but there is weekly homework. This class is the definition of "you get what you put in" and I would take it again next year if I could. He pushes everyone but will push you harder if you ask for more feedback. So ask for more feedback.
McGarren has set up the Digital Painting course in a way to help students succeed not just in the class but after taking the class too.
Professor Flack's course is very useful to becoming an artist, but is extremely challenging. I'd recommend this class if you want to push yourself artistically. Studying the skeletal structure and musculature is ESSENTIAL to this specific class.
McGarren Flack is very good with providing the digital art fundamentals as well as constructive criticism. The use of the studio time is well spent. It is worth noting that there is HOMEWORK outside of class. This means it's important to spend your time economically. Overall, excellent course.
Genuilnly challengeing class for me, but I learned so much throughout the class 100% worth the challenge.
I really appreciated how McGarren handled the various questions and individual complications students had while making the materials for the class. He is the kind of professor you have the opportunity to learn invaluable information from if you take the time to. He pushes you to problem solve but still offers help if needed!
Not my favorite style of teaching but not awful either.
Long readings but short tests and short paragraph style responses. Very fun class, some expectations were unclear and supplies wise you should be prepared to pay for quiet a bit of extra material, especially if you are new to art or art not a painter
McGarren is seriously a wonderful professor. He's difficult because he wants you to learn to the best of your ability. He provides wonderful feedback to help you improve. Participation and showing up to class matters because if you don't show up you won't be able to get assignments done. McGarren may seem serious, but he's pretty funny.
McGarren is amazing for people who are serious about art. He's very trained and can teach you a lot of you're willing to learn.
This class was great, and you will learn a lot, but there are also 4 hours of homework a week on top of the two studio classes so it's a bit intense compared to many of the other upper division art classes.
Professor makes class time meaningful, you never feel like your time is wasted. He simplifies things well and gives amazing feedback. Always willing to help if you ask. Has clear grading criteria, and if you put effort into the assignment, he sees it. Highly recommend if you want to learn and develop your painting skills quickly.
keeper going Flack!!!
I've had McGarren before and will have him again. He's really great and the content of his courses are amazing. For this course specifically his communication wasn't always great and we were frequently left unprepared for class (told to bring the wrong things, not told what we would be doing, etc.) but normally I have a great time in his classes.
Professor Flack is amazing. This class was so insightful and fun. He is very helpful and is willing to work with you if you have any questions about anything. Participation and attendance for this class matters, along with being on time. If you come to this class ready to learn and work hard you will do well.
Prof Flack is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, blunt but fair, and an experienced fine artist. He doesn't repeat a lot of information. Students need to pay attention and be prepared to work. Class is quick-paced. Students experience multiple mediums, learn the how and why of making art materials, as well as techniques for preserving the art you make.
Professor McGarren Flack helped me understand my short coming and offered advice on how to approach them. I learned to try different techniques and to use a process to get to where I wanted to be. Be open to receiving critique and if you want to work on one piece more than others put red in it or make it a bit more detailed.
Flack was a very enjoyable professor. He is very hands on and gives valuable and honest feedback to improve. He creates an amazing environment. He helped me create some of my most favorite paintings I have ever done. He is very strict about attendance though, even if your 1 minute late. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and I recommend him to anyone!
He is very knowledgeable on the subject and excited about the information. His goal is to give students all the tools they need to be an artist in the real world. He pushes you to do your very best and mentions opportunities outside of class. He is a great person to as questions because he is very clear and kind. Great professor!
This class is one of McGarren's easier classes. Though, attendance is still mandatory. Often times other students and I felt unprepared coming into class. Things could've been communicated a little bit more though the use of announcements or something.
Unique experience! The lessons are entertaining and educational. It's not hard if trying as best as you can.
You gotta be open to critique on your work and have the patience for studying in and outside of class. Overall, a wonderful teacher can help you be pushed in the direction your trying to go to.
Attendance is a big part of your grade. You need to be in class right on time. You will work on fun projects that will help you grow as a digital artist.
McGarren gives clear instruction and expects a lot from his students. He gives helpful advice and pushes everyone to be the best artist they can be. Always a great experience being in his class.
Professor Flack is very good at grading honestly and giving out critique to help the artist. He cares about his students and he does everything to help a student pass.
Very knowledgeable, and teaches you a lot.
Extremely fun class that I learned a lot from. Keep up with the homework modules and reading or it will be hard to catch up. You are expected to know the information from the reading before you arrive to class. Attendance is very important, most of the work is done in class and you will receive constructive feedback
Mcgarren is one of the best professors in the art department. He has tons of real world experience making his own materials and is an invaluable resource when learning about your materials and how to become a professional. Come in ready to work and he will come in ready to help you build a career.
Mcgarren is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is super hands on in this course and you will learn about so many materials/techniques. You will learn how to become successful using almost any material as an artist. Attendance is mandatory and you have to be there every class to use the materials and get credit.
McGarren's intermediate drawing class is fantastic. I have learned & improved so much. If you ask for help fixing or making something better, he will tell you how it is and ensure you get it down. He teaches the class as if all students want to be professional artists. If you are looking to improve your drawing technique, this is the class for you.
McGarren is an awesome teacher. He knows his stuff. I learned a lot of invaluable information on how to draw in this class. Attendance really matters; you can't be late.
McGarren is really awesome! During critiques he was really helpful and gave really good advice as well as techniques to get what you want.
Gives a lot of creative freedom and honestly, if you just submit assignments on time, this class is very easy and fun to take. I got a lot of good feedback and on what to do.
The professor is very clear and concise with what he wants from you and how you'll get there. I found it easy to learn from him, and he provided good critiques and knowledge when I was struggling. Very solid professor.
Fun personality. Teaches about things no one cares about a lot. Over all not a bad teacher.
He is demanding for putting in the work to gain mastery. He's good at picking out specific techniques for each student to improve.
He is tough, but caring. As long as you are willing to put in effort, and want to learn. You will be fine.
Class is great as both an introduction to the oil painting medium and as an introduction to using color in painting. Plus if you ask him why he gave you the grade he did, he will explain it very clearly, so he's pretty good at feedback. Highly recommend.
McGarren's course is organized with clear instructions & deadlines. He's great at breaking down the painting process in an analytical way & is always willing to clarify/explain things. He is not a fluffy--he is direct. He gives helpful, constructive feedback. If you can learn to not be averse to critiques then you can learn a lot from him.
McGarren is a very well educated and talented artist. He is very clear in his feedback and will explain concepts in an efficient, concise manner. He is incredibly honest and will push you toward excellence.
Flack is a great professor. Not only does he have a lot of professional experience in the art world but he also really knows the material of the course. He gives a lot of great feedback during classes and is very patient when working with students. He's also a pretty funny guy and his classes are never boring. I would take another class from him.
He is very knowledgeable, and a great teacher. He explains things in a clear and concise way that make it easy for the student to understand. He also offers helpful critiques on paintings, more so than other professors.
He is genuinely a good professor. Some assignments can be slightly challenging but you always come out of them learning something. Each assignment is meant to teach you something and make you think not just busywork. Flack always has a great ready to go attitude at the start of class.
Professor Flack is very knowledgeable in painting, especially painting the figure. He is very patient with his students and creates an environment with good high expectations, excellence and hard work. I thoroughly enjoyed this class. There is a lot of work involved, but that is what it takes to achieve excellence in painting the figure.
McGarren is very knowledgeable as both a painting professor and as a painter himself. His experience in the professional art world is inspiring and gives him a good idea of what makes a good painting. The intro to oil painting class was a vital course if you're interested in painting anything. Would reccomend.
If you want to know the structure of how to create a good painting, McGarren Flack is serious about his craft and willing to share his knowledge. I have learned a great deal from his class. Thank you!
get robynd Somebody said you got a new friend Does she love you better than I can? And there's a big black sky over my town I know where you're at, I bet she's around And yeah, I know it's stupid But I just gotta see it for myself I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh I'm right over here, why can't you see me? Oh
McGarren clearly presents information and makes it easy to understand. He gives straightforeward critiques, good feedback and help with what you can improve on. His courses are set up well, building off the last skill learned. There was homework but it helped me improve my art skills by doing it. He's an excellent and well versed professor!
Professor Flack is a very knowledgeable and straightforward art professor, which is something you need as an art student. He is willing to answer questions and gives tailored responses to help you achieve and understand your art goals and how to articulate your questions effectively.
McGarren was a great teacher with lots of professional experience. He pushes his students to always be better and gives helpful feedback. It was a challenging class but I found myself really improving and learning valuable information.
McGarren is honest, gets straight to the point, and explains concepts clearly and concisely. He has a serious front to him but he will show you his fun side. He is a very well educated individual in many areas including art and human anatomy. You will learn a lot from him very quickly.
When it comes to teaching art, McGarren is the best. However, he makes many comments during class that make the environment hostile, and when you ask him to stop, he will not. He has a huge ego and isn't receptive to student feedback, and sometimes puts student's successes down. If this were controlled, the class would be much more enjoyable.
He holds you accountable. He is a great teacher and he makes class enjoyable
Fun guy who you can tells knows a lot. I was a little intimidated by him at first. Wished in his class he gave me more critiques.
Professor Flack is a fun professor who gives great feedback and ideas. He is great to talk to about assignments and just to have a conversation with. He will always be honest and constructive about your work. His classes are worth taking if you want someone who will be honest with you and genuinely wants to help you improve your art.
As long as you are trying to improve your projects and are there in class putting in the work the grading is not very tough, but you really have to show up to class because that time is extremely helpful in working on your projects and there will be times when you have to come in outside of class or work on your project at home.
Genuinely such a fun class, Professor Flack elevates the class so much with the energy and the more laid back personality he brings in. He also can be a little strict about things such as attendance and late work, but he gives amazing feedback and helped me improve my understanding of 3D art work so much!
Gives good feedback, gives lots of homework, which can suck but is necessary to keep up in the course.
I really appreciate his strict deadlines and how much he encourages consistency and hard work. I improved so much taking his course. I genuinely look forward to taking more from him in the future.
Professor Flack's figure painting class is amazing. The experience of painting from a live model is so important to understanding skin tones and proportions of the human form. He is always helpful and completely honest. Make sure to always be on time and attend class because he is strict with attendance, which is good. I highly recommend this class
He is a very knowledgeable artist and give great critiques, but tends to include lots of anecdotes with unnecessary information.
Super talented, fun, motivating, outstanding professor.
Professor Flack is a fun, interesting, knowledgeable teacher. He has high expectations because he wants students to succeed as artists in the real world and gives lots of high quality advice. He cares about his students and creates a positive work environment. He's hands on and thoughtful about the assignments. Would take again!
Do not be on time or late, be early so you don't get marked absent. On the other hand though, you will get a lot of assignments. But that only gives you more practice to get better so that is good.
McGarren is a wonderful professional. He has so much great knowledge & wants to share it with all of us. Because of his knowledge, his feedback is amazing! He helps you think critically & helps you understand what might not be working. McGarren might seem intimidating, but he has the best intentions for all of his students and wants us to succeed.
Flack is tough when it comes to deadlines, scoring, and attendance. However, he's very friendly and creates a fun space to learn. He gives great feedback.
Professor Flack is a hands-on, knowledgeable instructor who will teach you tons about art materials and techniques. Stay engaged, use unstuckstudy for study prep, and you'll come out of this class a more well-rounded artist.
he was fun.
Mr. Flack is a well qualified, very good teacher. He cares about all his students and is very helpful.
His class is very direct, as is he. He does not mince his words when talking about your work, but it's not to offend you, it's just to tell you directly what you are doing that needs improvement, which he will show you how to improve it. He is a good teacher as long as you take in what he is saying and apply it to your work, he will notice.
I don't really have much to say. He's good, straight-forward teacher with facts to back him up.
The professor provided helpful and informational lectures regarding future projects. In addition, these tutorials provided tips and even quick exercises to get students used to starting up assignments. Feedback is always constructive and made my art experience less overwhelming! I would take this class again if I had the opportunity to!
He is a wonderful teacher; taking a class from him was great to study and learn.
He is a really great teacher if you are looking for feedback from your work he will give it to you and it helps to see how you can do better and with this class he made it so we can do the assignments in our strongest thing we can do best and it makes it really fun and not very stressful. This was a really good class.
I like that he shows us plenty of examples what he's talking about, also gives great feedback on assignments.
Professor flack really cares about his students but he's no pushover. He has very clear expectations and guidelines for his classes and if you try, you will become a much better artist by taking his classes. Not a whole lot of room for creativity but we're learning skills here!
Very intelligent and funny guy. Loves and appreciates art and is articulate when it comes to teaching the material.
You can learn a lot from his classes due to his clear and helpful feedback. His classes can be a lot of work, especially if you're taking more than one of his in a semester.
The feedback he gave for each art piece was invaluable. He helped me see what I could be doing to fix my mistakes and when I did fix those mistakes it made my art drastically better. He brought my spark back for art and made me want to create more. The crucial feedback that leveled up my art made me able to be proud of the art I made.
McGarren is awesome! He really cares about student's work, and always makes sure to help students throughout their projects and gives good feedback on our final assignments. He's sort of a tough grader, but he really pushes his students to do their best. I was never afraid to ask for help :)
This is my second time taking digital painting with McGarren and I still love this class. I was able to learn new stuff and get good criticism from him on how to improve my skills. Though attendance wasn't required I was able to get my work done in a timely matter. Is a tough grader but he will explain why when talking with you on the assignments.
Overall, he pushes you to keep improving with all assignments, offers awesome feedback, and is very understanding if there are issues (like life, health, etc.). Communication is important to maintain with them, and the grading is tough, but he offers constructive criticism on what to improve, so it is easy to understand. He's an awesome professor.
McGarren is wonderful at making an okay artist a great artist if you put in the work. I improved a lot in this class due to his teaching. His grading makes you work for it. It's tough, but it's worth it.
McGarren is a great professor, he is always there to help when you need it. He is clear and always helps you improve on your work and gives you great pointers. He gives you questions that makes you think quizzically on certain art topics.
He's great at helping out students and making sure they succeed and progress. He knows what he is talking about and knows his subject.
he is so kind and funny
Very professional and helps when confused.
Good at feedback when given, knows a lot about art and explains easily
Wants his students to succeed but for him success does not come easily. Some times questioned why I lost point on assignments, but if you confront him about it he will give a valid response so you can be more successful on the next assignment. If you are looking to become a great artist he's the guy to listen to.
McGarren is a funny guy who is easy to talk to. He always gives good feedback on work and the way he teaches the class is very lenient.
It is a good class and can benefit artists if they put in the effort. I feel the professor actually cares about helping them grow as artists.
Professor Flack is very strict and particular when it comes to grading and attendance, however he is very good at teaching content for the class.
Flack is a hard teacher. He will tell you when you are doing something wrong, but not while looking down at you. He tells you what you are doing wrong and works with you to find a solution.
The assignments were well paced and built into each other. You do a lot of poster studies, and a few bigger "portfolio ready" assignments. Because there are only a couple of these more finished assignments, the grade you received for them had a big impact, so don't neglect them. Feedback was helpful and fair, with high expectations for improvement.
There's a big emphasis on continual improvement, so the feedback received will reflect that. If you're looking to coast by with minimal effort and still get a good grade, this isn't the class to take. Consider everything based on if you'd put it in your portfolio. I enjoyed thinking like that personally, and I could tell it improved my artwork.
Intermediate drawing has been a decent class. I wish there was more of a technical aspect to it. I didn't like drawing Bargue copies again and again. More advanced perspective for certain objects or structures would have been helpful. The repetition and time required did help develop my drawings to next level heights under Mr Flack's tutelage.
Mcgarren Flack is a nice person, but was not a good teacher for this class. I learned more about digital painting from outside the classroom than in it, from Skillshare, youtube, and similar websites. We mostly painted thumbnails with few big assignments or projects. We learned very few techniques and almost no industry applications. Frustrating.
I wish I could add more tags. Participation is 100% necessary, that's your time to complete work, especially if the items or model is unavailable anytime outside of class-time. It's difficult but incredibly rewarding. The professor is easy to talk to and ready to put out a helpful word. He's also very real about majors looking for a future in art.
McGarren is definitely one of the best professors in the art department. His critique is honest, concise and constructive. If you work is not to a professional standard he'll let you know, but he'll also help you figure out what you need to improve on. McGarren is fair in his grading and his lectures are entertaining and extremely informative.
Amazing Professor! Be ready and willing to work hard and learn!!
McGarren is a strict but fair teacher. He grades harshly but gives you the ability to improve. In 3910R, the class was framed as learning in the first half of the semester and then more creative towards the second half. There is a LOT of work, and there will be assignments over breaks.
At first, I believed this was just an beginner's class, as I had never painted digitally. While it starts simple, it gets difficult very quickly. Fortunately, Professor Flack is very thorough in his instruction. I rarely had to ask extra questions. While attendance is not required, you're still graded on it. Too harshly, in my eyes. Show up.
Show up and do the work honestly and you will get a passing grade. Means well and wants everyone to do well in class. Does not accept late work which in turn is helpful in my eyes for getting things done on time.
McGarren is by far one of the best professors I've had the pleasure of working with. His critiques are so constructive and so helpful that you can't help be feel excited about the next time he comes up to you to give feedback. The way he instructs is by a step by step basis. If you follow the steps, you'll do just fine.
Great teacher for both beginning and experienced artists. Really tight on attendance, do NOT be late for the final presentation.
Good course. Not difficult, just lots of thumbnails. The work can get repetitive and take a long time, but I never found the concepts or content hard. Fun professor, upbeat, good attitude, can be funny sometimes but also can make a short lecture very long. Overall good.
McGarren is a pretty tough professor and not afraid to say things how they are. However, he has a ton of valuable insight to be gained as an instructor. He also tells some wild stories from time to time.
Most of the class is work time, and I barely had to work on anything outside of class time. He gives great feedback and does not sugarcoat criticism; it's very constructive, and I appreciated it. He's upbeat and friendly and not boring to listen to. Overall, I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would, and I think he's a pretty good professor.
Stay positive and don't hang on to every critique as if you have to second guess yourself, you'll stress yourself out by the end and feel like you're failing yourself. Listen to details so that you can actively talk about your submissions with as a professional to gain the appropriate feedback for yourself to make changes to adapt to for next time
The professor definitely knows about the human body and how they can correlate to drawing and shaping and everything that involves the drawing into turning it 3 dimensional. I love that he's had experience in this field for about 20 years and that he knows what advice he can give out to the students. He's a very hard grader but is a good professor.
Professor Flack is a good instructor, he always gives feedback and the homework is just working on the main project outside of class. If you want to get better at drawing I highly recommend this class.
He is a hard professor, but he pushes you to do your best work!
Don't think that you can be passive in this class. Professor Flack is very reasonable, but he does expect you to make an effort. If you show up to class on time, and commit to improving your skills you will do just fine. If you think that you are really good at drawing and don't have much room for improvement, expect to be humbled.
The professor had a disclaimer in his syllabus that said "if you're easily offended, drop this class'. That's kind of ridiculous as no one else teaches this class. And anything offensive he could have possibly said obviously had nothing to do with the class. To me, this disclaimer means "I can say any weird or gross comment without consequences."
Growth and effort is very important to Flack which really adds to his classes, I always feel like I'm learning different things to work on rather than receiving the same critiques.
McGarren will do all he can to help you. His feedback is super helpful. He is super knowledgeable and such a great professor. Don't let what students say about him being tough keep you from taking one of his classes.
You are guaranteed a grade that reflects the work you put into your projects, and you will grow as an artist in his classes tremendously if you commit! His classes instill the idea that success comes with taking accountability for myself and working hard.
Good professor. Not easy. Fairly straightforward about what he wants to see from students
In-person attendance is essential, there is a live model. Stay on top of homework and quizzes too. Great feedback in class and in canvas, plus outside resources like videos. A tough course but the work is worth it.
This is a hard course but I think the critiques and assignments were extremely helpful. There will be homework and quizzes. Canvas is updated on time so don't forget to submit pictures of the in person assignments.
Be ready to work hard throughout the whole semester. Don't be afraid to speak to the professor, he's a great guy and cares about his work.
This class is very difficult, but the professor makes it as easy as possible. Coming to class and engaging in the material should give you the resources you need.
The professor is clear and concise on what he expects of you. He teaches well, and will help you whenever you are struggling. The material is covered fully, and there are many resources that are available to study in addition, that will help with this class.
Attendance is important, he's a good teacher with high expectations and you will become a better painter with this class.
He's a good teacher who prioritizes your learning and participation
What I mean by difficult is that he is definitely more into the material that he teaches, therefor he is more strict but with good intention. There's something different to how he does that helps, but I can't exactly pinpoint what it is.
Flacks assignments were very repetitive and it was hard for me to learn a lot from them. This may have just been my experience.
Very good instructor, great at what he does. Expect to show up to every class and work hard, but also expect to become a much more skilled artist afterward!
Would recommend taking this class with flack just be aware that it's a lot of material that is covered and lots to memorize but I personally think it helped me a lot in terms of learning anatomy!
Fantastic but fair. I was hoping for a more challenging class and this fit very well as it was lots of work but was very rewarding. Any critique was not held back but was very helpful and appreciated.
You do class critiques Which is good but I wish my anatomy and perspective got corrected more.
This class is hard because painting the figure is no easy task. However, how Flack organized the material truly teaches you how to paint efficiently and effectively. I went from ground zero in knowing how to paint a figure to being able to paint what ever I desire. He is respectful, funny and can truly become a mentor if you put in the work.
This professor is knowledgeable about the course and has a clear understanding of how to portray the assignments to the students and help them excel. The assignments are straight forward and clear, he is available to help and explain anything needed. He wants students to enjoy the class and to meet the goals that are clearly set in the syllabus.
He's a great professor, easy going, and when you're done with all current assignments if you ask he'll allow you to leave early. Only drawback would be that sometimes explanations of the assignments wouldn't be too clear.
He was very understanding when I had issues throughout the year regarding to mental health :) he cares about his students.
