Takes an interest in the class and her students.
She really likes to talk about herself... a lot. Very willing to help out students. Going to class is pretty pointless. Tests are based on the book only, and are just created by the test bank. But be prepared, the tests are really hard! Pay attention to EVERY detail from the book and you will do fine.
Fun class to go to once in a while because sometimes she swears or talks about relevant stuff. She's cute too, good body. Asks way too many retorical questions though instead of just lecturing. Tests are made from test bank for the book, take the online practice exams and read the chapters well and you'll do fine.
Very vague teaching style. The textbook was the only source tangible information for this class. Shes not too hard on the eyes though.
Great teacher, this lady is hilarious and knows her stuff. I highly recommend her.
She really loves her stuff, she's just a hilarious person to begin with so it makes the class fun. Just take notes and read the text--take the online tests, and it should be an easy A.
Easy class if you read the book. she reads off the books power point. you dont need to go to class, unless you hate actually reading. She is like the audio book. if you can't pass this class, something is wrong with you ;) its that easy
This professor really knows her stuff and knows how to teach it. She's comes across tough but she's funny and makes everything she teaches really interesting. I highly recommend this class even for just an elective. I'd read the book and pay attention in class and you'll be just fine.
Interesting class. READ THE BOOK! Questions are taken from test banks so they can be very detailed. It is also useful to make a study guide. Her lectures are good clarification and she is absolutely hilarious. I recommend this class.
This is a pretty hard class so be prepared. It is an interesting class and her lectures are well done, but you MUST read the book! If you want an A be ready to study study study!
McNeel is Awesome! She does a great job of making the class interesting. She is a great entertainer and makes the class more general fun for the student.
She is really funny, but gets off topic a lot and goes on tangents. Definitely read the textbook, she takes test questions right out of the "test yourself" sections. And take her advice on how to study, it helps. Talking to her during office hours also helps if you aren't doing well. You don't really need to go to class as long as you read.
McNeel is awesome. Her lectures are hilarious and she is always fun to listen to. Sometimes there is a little too much story time, but hey, its better then economics. Read the book thoroughly as the test questions come out of a database. Read the how to study section and take it to heart. If nothing else this class can make you a great student
She's absolutely hilarious and gives fantastic, engaging lectures. However, she has unrealistic expectations for her students. Exams are a test of how fast you can write more than your comprehension/application of the material.
I agree with the person who talked about having to write fast. She expects you to elaborate on your points but it's difficult to get the main points written down in the time given, let alone elaborate! otherwise, good sense of humor and interesting class.
She is really funny and does a great job giving additional explanations when asked, though she does go on tangents often. Her tests are difficult if you only takes notes. READ the BOOK! Her advice on how to study is extremely useful. A good class.
The tests were way to hard. Not an easy class.
she turns the cog seminar into a neurocog seminar. NOT what i wanted, but it was still interesting, even though i would have dropped it because it's not what i signed up for haha. but I'm graduating so i had to take the class no matter. 50% of ur grade is based on a presentation and a paper... which are both due the day of your presentation
Not a good educator. She enjoys the subject/knows a lot...BUT: I took the class two years ago so it might've changed. But when I took it she didnt use power points and didn't allow laptops in class. She didnt give study guides and told us "your book is the study guide" Harsh grading/ridiculous amount of reading. Worst grade I got @ WWU over 4 years
That chilly pepper's no lie. Her exams are straight out of the text, I finally aced her last exam because I focused on the CONCEPTS. You MUST read and memorize the concepts to succeed. She's funny, beautiful, helpful, will go over the exam with you. Her lecture reviews the text, but you'd do fine skipping the lecture if you can recite the text.
I took her level 200 cognition class and found it hard and too much to handle. I didn't want to take 410 from her, but it was my only choice. I'm incredibly glad I took it. The seminars with her are amazing. She goes over everything, no huge final paper, and loves to see you improve. Shes a hard professor, but will love you for being honest.
Although Dr. Jantzen is hilarious and really cool, I would not take her again because of her teaching style. Your grade is based on 4 exams. Her power points come directly from the book's website. She doesn't post them online. No study guide. You literally have to memorize the textbook to get good grades.
She is very good at elaborating on concepts to help students understand, but sometimes gets a little off subject. Grades are based off four exams only, and they are not easy unless the textbook is read, and the content thoroughly studied. Be prepared to study A LOT for this class if you want a good grade.
Dr. Jantzen is easily the most entertaining teacher at Western! She tells you everything you need to know on the test so go to the review days! To do well you need to memorize to exam topics using a script (telling a story) She explains that she is not trying to fail anyone but if you don't write the script how she wants then you will not succeed.
I was so unimpressed with this professor. I had her winter quarter, the material was extremely difficult and complicated, she provided no study guides or extra help and when she answered questions I was still left confused by her explanations. She told us absolutely to not come in if it snowed and when it did she held class and didn't tell us.
Jantzen is honestly the best teacher i've had at Western. She gives you so much time to read the material, she goes over everything in the same order as the book, she takes the lectures slow and talks about everything in detail, we are usually out early, and she is so enthusiastic about everything she talks about. She's also hilarious.
Dr. Jantzen seemed intimidating at first, but she was a really great professor! Great lectures. Must read all the assigned chapters. Tests are challenging, but she is willing to help answer your questions during tests as much as possible. Her lectures are interesting and she is very entertaining.
Where should I start. I felt hopeless in this class. Requirements are demanding. The only thing we get graded on is our exams and she never gave us study guides. I feel a professor should teach at a more general level, not everyone learns at the same pace or understands all concepts. I studied hard, learned the material and still didn't pass.
Lectures would often end early and were sparse in comparison to what were were to know for exams. We had 3 (out of 4) exams in the last 4 weeks of class and they were filled with confusing questions. Occasionally, really specific scenario questions were pulled from previous editions of the book. It wasn't clear how to succeed in this class.
Jantzen is a hilarious teacher but that doesn't make up for her ridiculous testing. I can understand tests are a huge part of psychology but they shouldn't be determinant of your entire grade. She didn't even give credit for participating in required research experiments. The tests were incredibly difficult and she was never available to talk.
I agree with the other posts that say this class is a test as to how fast you can write. She has 3 essay exams so if you don't do well with that format then you will not do well in the class. She is funny but she is a very hard grader and her expectations are very tough
Her lectures are quite entertaining. Her grades for 322 are 75% test-based. With that said, she gives you the test questions a week in advance so you can practice writing a script for what you will write come test day. She allows you to send her your scripts and will give you feedback. As long as you either read and/or go to lecture, you will pass.
Dr. Jantzen's lectures are super funny and interesting! As a professor, she's awesome. However, her class is super tough because your grade is based on three 50-question tests and NOTHING else. The tests are based heavily on the textbook as well. If you're good at remembering what you read, it'll be easy. Otherwise... watch out.
One of the worst prof at WWU. Funny person but horrible prof. Thinks she is above everyone, and looks down on the students. Grades are based on the 3 exams and nothing else. Exams are HARD. Not easy to meet up with to talk about grades. Might as well just skip class and read the textbook becuase she doesnt say anything different. Prof not helpful.
Dr. Jantzen is one of the worst professors I've had. The textbook is mandatory to pass the class. She gets all of her questions, lectures, and slides from the book. She's really hard to contact outside of class hours, she's condescending, and cares more about her studies than her students. The WHOLE course is based off of 3 EXAMS. Do not take her.
Fun professor, but not so fun when it comes to getting your exam grades back. Her lectures are highly based on the textbook, so you won't miss much if you don't show up. However, she doesn't go over many different examples within the concepts besides personal ones. Tests are extremely hard because questions ask about unfamiliar situations.
Jantzen definitely does not want to be teaching a 200 level class. She is a funny person but this class isn't her priority and she basically teaches word for word from the textbook. The tests were okay if you did all of the reading very thoroughly although she threw in enough weirdly specific questions to mess you up. Grade is based off of 3 tests.
If you don't absolutely have to take this class then stay away from it. Her grading style is ridiculously difficult and sometime unreasonable. She will borderline fail for missing a tiny piece of an answer even though you didn't get anything actually wrong. She seems like a really awesome person outside of class but i wouldn't take her class again
Dr. Jantzen is fantastic. Her lectures are informative and funny, bringing real life examples to an academic topic, which really helps you apply your knowledge to real life. Tests are all writing so you really need to understand the concepts, but she gives you an idea of what to study the most. She's a whole chili pepper plant. Highly recommended.
(Review for Fall 17 class) Jantzen just reads off of slides. Personal tangents and examples were very helpful for students to understand and remember material, but you're graded solely on 3 multiple choice exams, so spend all of your time for this class studying/memorizing. I wouldn't take her again because she wasn't a great prof.
Psychoacoustics was pretty lit. It used to be listed as a WP3 course, so she makes you write 1 page lab reports every week. Only 2 exams, and a whole lotta fun. She has high expectations, and expects you to know and utilize the content learned in lecture/book in your labs and exams. She's hard to access outside of class sometimes. So, good luck!
Do NOT take this class. Most frustrating class I've taken at Western. I studied just like she recommended and did not get a good grade to show for it. The exams are very hard and the entire class is just the 4 exams. She does not seem to have a good gauge for student success and gives no chance for extra credit or curving grades.
Shes a good teacher. Talks really fast and teaches a lot from the book. Hardest thing is your entire grade is based on 4 exams. It was brutal to study for and is very difficult. She is available often to help, emailing is great to reach her at but again, if youre not a good test taker, Run.
Dr. Jantzen's class was exhausting, disheartening and at many times, impossible to comprehend. The entire class was graded on just four exams, all of which seemed to be impossibly difficult no matter how hard I studied. Even after reading the textbook and attending every lecture I still felt completely lots most of the time.
Everyone in this class had a really tough time because Professor Jantzen teaches straight from the book. She doesnt post lecture slides, study guides, and her tests (the entirety of your grade) are conceptual. Read the book. I truthfully only showed up on test days, but I read the book as she said we needed to if we wanted to pass, and I did well.
I dont know what people are complaining about. Dr. Jantzen always told students what was expected of them, how to stay motivated, and how to best prepare/study for the exams. Her lectures were hilarious and she was always happy to answer everyones questions (even the ridiculous ones). Shes not easy, but college isnt supposed to be.
She was funny, but I didn't like her teaching style. When I asked her questions outside of class, she was rude. It was hard talking about test results, even though she said she was open to talk. Her slides were taken directly from the book, so read if you need extra info! She's clear about that. 100% of the grade is exams, so that's not fun.
I have had Dr. Jantzen for a couple classes (PSY and LING). Shes super funny and really likes what she teaches. Shes always excited to tell us stuff and see her students succeed. She isnt easy and expects you to work hard, but shes helpful and caring about it. I always thought she was respectful and never rude to me or anyone else in class.
Good clear lectures from someone who is clearly brilliant, but really tough. I did fine but most people in the class were really struggling and complained to the head of the psych department which was a big fiasco. Also the whole grade was based on 3 really challenging tests that she did not curve.
Jantzen is incredibly smart and has awesome lectures. She's super funny and engaging with students. The class was bit disorganized and she doesn't use canvas, but the class was good besides that. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Jantzen is incredibly disorganized in class. If you have confidence in your reading comprehension, just skip lecture and learn the material out of the book-- you'll be way better off. Extremely disappointing how difficult/tricky her exams were while her lectures were essential a stand-up comedy routine. Study, but don't expect better than a B.
She is extremely test heavy, and some of the questions on her exam were worded really strange to me and I struggled applying theories to the questions.I like her personality outside of the classroom, but I was too intimidated to approach her about my grade, and became more disappointed.I wish there was another way to boost your grade besides exams.
Dr. Jantzen is super funny and smart. Her lectures were always interesting and she was always happy to answer our questions. Its a lecture class so only exams towards the grade and they arent easy. However she tells you how to study and answers questions and helps a lot during the tests.
For someone who teaches a class on cognitive psych youd think shed understand varying learning styles and would know that teaching out of a textbook works for a very small minority of students. Horrible professor who does not care about her students. Will gaslight you and make you feel small.
Im not sure why some people didnt like Jantzen. Her lectures were really clear and followed along the textbook. She brought in extra data from experiments in the book to make them clearer. She was always available during office hours and outside of them for appointments. There are four multiple choice exams and she answers questions during.
Overall this class was very hard! i know a lot of people who didnt pass. Basically there are 4 tests, each worth 25% of your grade. If you mess up on one it will seriously set you back- especially considering her tests are HARD! Jantzen as a person is very funny and kind, and during her office hours she is supportive and wants to see you succeed.
Her lectures come pretty much straight from the textbook, but she goes into more detail about experiments and theories and answers all kinds of questions. There are four multiple choice exams that she helps answers questions to during the exam. Super funny, smart, and wants students to succeed. Go to class and read the book and youll do fine!
This class was based on three exams. Her lectures are taken directly from the textbook. She won't upload her PowerPoint slides or provide study guides because it's her "intellectual property." Tests are way too hard for a GUR. The last exam she said a couple people got A's so that's all that mattered, not the average. Stay away if you can.
In the simplest of terms, Jantzen did not set her students up to pass. This course was based on 3 tests. There were no assignments, no study guides, no attendance incentives and she refuses to post PowerPoints claiming they are her own intellectual property. The book is the only resource so make sure you buy it. Steer clear, take someone else
I'm not sure why other students are upset about the three exams. There were originally four exams, but due to Western being closed for a week for snow we lost one of them. Also the third exam is only on ONE chapter and its open book and note. Professor Jantzen is really funny and tries to answer everyones questions, even the annoying ones.
Agreed. It was a crazy quarter due to Western being closed for a week and then COVID. Jantzen handled it really well and worked very hard to make things less stressful for us. She was very supportive of students staying healthy, not getting anxious, and making sure we still learned and succeeded. I didn't have a bad experience with her.
Professor Jantzen was my least favorite professor in the psychology department. I emailed her and never got a response back when asking for help and how to prepare for the final (even though she said she was available for extra help). Don't bother listening to her lectures because all the exam questions are very obscure and buried in the textbook.
Wow, I had the exact opposite experience with Dr. Jantzen this quarter. Her lectures were really helpful, and hilarious, and she always emailed or Zoomed with me when I needed anything. The exams are open book and she posts possible exam questions ahead of time. She was also my only prof this quarter who said anything about Black Lives Matters.
Dr. Jantzen tried really hard to make online lectures fun. She posts possible exam question banks before exams and the exams are open book and note. She emailed class a lot to make sure we were all OK and feeling good about stuff. She also emailed a few times about Black Lives Matter and making sure students were and felt supported.
*TAKEN ONLINE DURING COVID-19* - This class was very low-stress due to it being online. Never watched a single video besides the intro, exams are open note and the questions are given before hand, so either look them up during the test or have answers ready. 3 multiple choice exams, no hw, no curve. This class would be hard in person.
I had a really bad quarter due to family issues and COVID. Professor Jantzen helped me out a lot with getting help from Student Life and checking in on me. She made sure I didnt feel alone and was cool about doing weekly Zoom meetings just to answer my questions and make me feel better about what was going on.
I had her for an online class. She provides lectures for each exam. She gives study guides with 160 possible questions for each exam and pulls 80 for each test so you have to know all the answers. The answers are pretty easy to find through quizlet, it just takes a long time to get all the answers. Split up the questions with other students! Read!
Dr. Jantzen's class online was very easy for a 5 credit class. As long as you read a little everyday, watch the lecture videos, and take notes, it's easy. Some of the answers for the Exams are straight out of the lectures. She is very energetic and has a great personality which I always appreciate.
I didnt think much of this class until I started taking the classes for which its a prereq. DO NOT TAKE LING310 WITH HER. The class was just using some weird computer software which I havent since touched and now Im completely unprepared for the higher level classes because of this, while everyone else learned linguistic basics in 310.
This class was incredibly difficult because it is entirely exam based no homework or no make ups at all. She also doesnt change grades at all. So if you fail you fail. Which is agonizing if you struggle on tests, this is not for you. Literally have never been so stressed out about a class before this one.
Jantzen is such a great professor in class and super knowledgeable and has so many stories to tell. The class is definitely hard, especially if you have never taken a linguistics class like me, and the class is based only on three tests throughout the quarter. But if you study hard, you'll be okay. She is very caring and open with her students!
Jantzen is super cool, very funny and engaging. The content itself is fascinating. But, the entire class is based on 3 tests (150 questions overall), meaning if u miss a few questions across the quarter, u won't get an A. There's also about 100 pages of reading/wk that is necessary to do well, but not rewarded w/ pts. Also no tech allowed in class.
She struggles with basic empathy and setting up students for success. Inappropriately joked and cussed in class often. There are only three tests, and she speaks very negatively about the possibility of a retake, clarifying that unless you have a disability accommodation, you may not retake anything. Tended to give snarky responses to my questions.
Unnecessarily difficult and more psychology than linguistics. She'll often dispute what the textbook says, but still requires it as the only source outside class lectures and heavily tests on it (I received poor grades despite closely following her reading instructions). Cancelled multiple classes for a course that meets only twice a week.
Jantzen is hilarious. Senior status and this was the hardest class I've taken. Didn't learn anything She assigns 400 pages of the textbook that was written for PhD level students! And then to top it all off, there are only 3 things in the grade book: 3 exams. No homework, no anything. Oh and 2 hour class, no breaks allowed!
Dr. Jantzen was an interesting experience she could be fun and wacky or deadly serious. The amount of homework and reading that you are assigned is astronomical. The book is heavier than Noah's ark with the animals inside. Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions and information.
I really wanted to like Dr. Jantzen and her class but made her teaching style made it hard. Her lecture is very entertaining, but the information felt irrelevant to the class a lot of the time. You can find all the relevant information in the nearly 100 pages of textbook every week. Her 'old-school' teaching style needs some thoughtful revision.
Don't take this class if you aren't a Linguistics Major. She hinges on this rule of not letting students access her slides, and the textbook was filled with jargon that I assume wasn't meant for a class with no pre-reqs. Met 3 times a week and still cancelled around 50% of the time. Also graded on only 3 tests (no retakes) which was frustrating.
You could get the same educational experience from reading the book and doing a self study. She recommends one method of studying: Reading the book everyday. She has 3 Exams all taken from test bank questions. There's no point in having a professor if they do not give any input or direct you in learning the material. The textbook is your new prof.
Would not recommend taking this class if you just need a GUR. Jantzen's lectures are interesting but I personally found the overall subject matter very confusing and difficult to understand. She also does not offer a lot of room to improve your grade, and I was struggling on tests even after reading everyday and doing all of the online studying.
Prof is passionate about their topic but overall is probably not passionate about teaching. The grade is determined by 3 exams, what she does in lecture is do a basic summary of the chapter which is fine, but half of class is taken up by questions. You need to read basically all of the textbook, 10ish chapters, and each chapter is about 160 pages.
If you are passionate about linguistics I think you would find this class interesting. As someone who took this course for a GUR, it wasn't enjoyable. Lots of reading and difficult exam questions for a 200 level class. The lectures barely cover chapter topics because she answers so many questions and goes off-topic most of the time. Dont recommend.
We had an interesting situation for the Fall quarter, which I won't get into, but McNeel is maybe one of my all time favorite professors. She is passionate, caring, outspoken, and most of all, a great lecturer. Her lectures are important if you want to do well in her class, but it's not so bad, I actually really like learning about the material.
This class only has 3 tests and due to extenuating circumstances, they were all canceled, so I can't really speak on the difficulty of this class, but Professor Jantzen is great. Yes, she's strict about phones and computers, but she's so funny and engaging and the material is super interesting, I loved this class and Professor Jantzen.
The only thing you are graded on is going to class each day & asking a discussion question after class which is due that night. Although, if you miss any class or forget to submit a question you don't get a grade for that day & she doesn't offer any way to make up missing questions. I missed 4 Q out of all the times we had class & my grade is a C.
i took the online summer section of this class. the class was easy enough because there were only 3 tests and that was all. there were lectures that were about an hour long that I found it hard to pay attention to. the professor was sweet but had very little interaction
Very easy class all you have to do is show up and post a discussion question after every class. Lectures can be very interesting and fun.
Ling 207 was such an engaging and fun class. Entirely lecture centered, go to class! After each lecture, you are required to submit a one sentence question pertaining to the content discussed in class. Super easy and it gives you the opportunity to absorb the content without the stress of unnecessary quizzes and tests. loved her lectures too!
Dr. Jantzen is funny and very knowledgeable, making her lectures interesting. She only grades on attendance and one "scholarly question" per class, however, I wish that there had been more opportunity for engagement with the information, especially with the number of cancelled classes.
While Professor Jantzen was very good at explaining lecture material, I also felt like she gets side tracked during lecture. She swears frequently. The first chunk of class was usually spent talking about what drugs and alcohol she and other students partook in over the weekend. Kind of rude, makes uncomfortable comments. Would not take again.
Dr. Jantzen is passionate and intelligent and she will push you out of your comfort zone, but she's also respectful and cares about students. Grading/tech policies were made explicitly clear the first day and she's strict about them. Not your typical prof, but it's not necessarily a bad thing (especially for a GUR).
Very easy class, all you have to do is show up and write a question each day; no tests, no essays, no projects. I didn't necessarily find the lectures interesting but Dr. Jantzen was funny and almost always ended early. I'm not too interested in the subject or lecturing style but insanely easy class to take and def recommend for an easy GUR!
This was the easiest class I have ever taken. Go to class, ask a question online, and you get an A. The professor is unhinged in the best way possible. We got to hear about a bowling rival and her skiing trips. I, unfortunately, didn't learn as much as I had hoped because of how low effort getting an A was. In the end, it's a great low-effort GUR.
Took this class for a GUR and ended up loving the material so much because of her that im doing a linguistics minor. If you're not going to show up and listen for every lecture don't take the class. Jantzen is funny and makes boring material interesting and memorable.
If you're looking for an easy 5 credit science gur, this class is great. There are no tests, no assignments, all you have to do is attend the lecture and then submit a question about the class. There is no way to make up late work or absences, but as long as you don't skip you can get through with a 100% in the class. She's pretty funny too.
