Her class is really hard! If you don't have exactly what she has for the answer on the tests then your answer is completely wrong and you get no points for that answer, not even for trying. Her tests are really hard! There is no homework but that could be a bad thing because then there is nothing to help the grade. I DO NOT recommend her at all!
She is super hard!! She blames the class for failing the exam when it is she who does not explain it all. Her exams are not what she talks about in class. She makes it soo hard to talk to her.
Higa tries very hard to be clear during class about the subject material to make up for the students' apparent inability to read the textbook. She's had to start giving homework and quizzes to make everyone study prior to the test, which still no one seems to do, and I sympathize with her situation.
The material covered during class is nowhere near as in depth as the test. The study guides are straight from the book, which I read and study from, but both the text and study guide do not help at all. I think she's struggling because it's her first year and it should get better. She does curve but it doesn't help much. She is nice & approachable.
Hard to follow her notes, grades very hard. Its hard to figure out what she wants in her answers
Teaches very well and is really interested and cares about the subject, but the tests are difficult and she grades very critically.
Professor Higa means well but she is not very clear during her lectures. Her notes are all over the place and the tests are more in depth than what she provides in the notes. I taught myself from the textbook which is the main reason why I was successful.
Worst proc I've ever had. Do not take her. She actually WANTS everyone to fail. She's very nice in lecture but when she grades, there is no mercy. She is unclear and NOT HELPFUL. Asking her a question will only result in her telling you to figure it out. STAY AWAY FROM HER CLASS
Dr. Higa is the worst possible teacher to have for lab. I know people from different lab classes who wrote the exact same thing on one of the worksheets. Student in Higa's got 14/20, and the student in the other class got 20/20. She refuses to help you too. If you ask her how to do something she'll say "well how do u think?" and nothing more.
Okay, so Higa is literally going to be your worst nightmare if you take her. I am normally a straight A student, but this woman WANTS to fail you. I always did my labs with my friends and she gave my friends 17/20 and she gave me 13/20 (same answers). She will never help you when you reach out to her and FORGET ABOUT HER EMAILING YOU BACK EVER.
Impossible grader. WILL NOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS. Ignores all emails. Information in notes and study guides are not even what is on test. I'd say about 70% of the nursing students in her class have to take it again. Avoid this terrible woman
Higa is literally the worst professor at York College. Bio I is a freshman level Biology and she treats it like its a class to prepare you for your doctorate. She will ignore any emails you send her and make you look like a complete idiot in class. The information she lectures on is NOT on the tests. And the tests are literally impossible BEWARE
I am normally an A+ student who studys regularly. However when having tho professor for class i literally wanted to cry everyday. Nothing in class is on the exams. And even if something is correct on an exam she takes points off for not telling her more. If her words aren't exactly used good luck passing.
Not helpful at all. It seemed every question we asked in class she wouldn't know the answer to. Tests were randomly dated, and they barely consisted of the content we learned in class. Homework was always due on weird days. Overall, she did not make biology easy, nor enjoyable, therefore I did not do amazing in her class.
DO NOT take her class. Most confusing class ever. Does not explain material at all. She marks things wrong on tests because they arent in her words even if the answers mean the same thing. Does not email back or help.
She is a horrible teacher! DO NOT TAKE HER!! She is not helpful and if you don't be precise enough with your wording she will fail you. She doesn't realize that she is teaching college students! WORST PROFESSOR EVER!!!
I had a very enjoyable semester in Dr. Higa's class this semester. She really does care about the subject and she did everything that she could in order to help me as a student whenever I needed help. No, the class is not easy but as long as you do the work and put in the time to study, you should do fine. I highly recommend this class!
Dr. Higa is a beautiful person.
She is fun & enthusiastic, but a technical/critical grader. She always answered my questions on unclear material & responded to email. She's a slow grader & unable to answer extraneous questions. Come to class, print the lecture slides, read the book, complete the study guides/homework and explain answers as if you are a tutor, and you'll be fine.
This class was absolutely horrible! I definitely recommend not taking her! She grades so low. Whenever I answered a question on a lab worksheet or on a test, I answered correctly what the question was answered, but that was never enough! She needed more that involved answering unasked questions like we had to read her mind!
Worst person to have as a freshmen. She grades like we're in Med School already. I wouldn't recommend Bio Lab at all. She can really hurt your grade. In Lecture she's not that bad, She got study guides online and homework about once every 2 weeks. She loves what she teaches and shes a nice person.
Dr. Higa is a good professor. You just need to give her a chance. If you know your Biology, you will do fine. If you need help, go to her office ours. I did and it helped out a lot. She has good study packets, the answers are given during lecture or you can use the textbook. She is a nice, perky professor.
Dr. Higa tries to make class fun, but her test grading is ridiculous! She asks very general questions but expects specific answers. You don't need the book unless you're going to study from it. STUDY YOUR NOTES FROM CLASS!
Hardest grader ever
I honestly like Dr. Higa as a person. She is very enthusiastic, and I can joke around with her! However, she is an extremely tough grader, and she never explains what you did wrong. Another thing that bothers me is that she talks FOREVER in lab which gets really annoying when you just want to finish the lab so you can leave.
She grades like we are in med school although we are first semester students. Tests are accumulative and she doesn't explain much in lecture. Answer every question in great detail and paragraph form or you won't get the points even if you are right. She's not very helpful if you ask for help. Avoid lab with her if you get stuck in lecture
Horrible grader. On probation for failing too many students. Don't take her. Will destroy your GPA if don't commit all your time to her class.
Higa is a really good professor if you pay attention & are at least kinda interested in biology. It's is not hard if you already have a good handle on biology. She expects you to actually learn the material & to understand it, but if you're having trouble she will help as long as you're not goofing off during class. She's easy to get along with.
Prof. Higa is a tough grader. STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!! If you do not study you will not pass. Uses info from the lecture on her tests. Do the learning objectives she provides online. Buy the book, it helps to read it before the tests.
Her notes are all over the place, her final is cumulative, unlike all the other Bio 150 professors, you have to be able to apply the concepts to new situations on the tests, 2 quizzes and 4 exams, online hw every week or so, goes over concepts quickly, wants you to figure out the answer so she won't help when asked, need the iclicker for this class
Seems like a nice person. Not the best teacher. Failed 2 out of the 6 test/quizzes before I started to do well in the class. Pay close attention and study in class powerpoint and lecture. Textbook not too important. Lots of short answer, be specific and detailed with responses.
There are many mixed emotions about Higa. In my personal opinion, she's an excellent professor but PAY ATTENTION. You're in real trouble if you decide to slack off bc lecture notes are extremely important. DEFINITELY recommend completing the learning objective because most exam questions are based off of these. She is however, a very hard grader.
I like Dr. Higa as a person because she is super nice, but I don't really like her as a professor. She grades super hard. Her tests are super hard and there's A LOT of essay type questions. If you don't fill those in the way that she wants them then you usually don't get much or any credit at all for them. She is very disorganized with her lectures too. She is kind of all over the place with them. I don't recommend taking any classes with her if at all possible.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. If you happen to take Higa, then I suggest going to tutoring right off the bat.
Higa was the absolute worst professor I have ever had. She has no understand of how to teach biology to students. She is very knowledgeable about it but her tests are absolutely impossible. She goes of large amounts of details that are very specific one time and expects you to understand it within a day. ONLY TAKE HER IF IT IS A LAST RESORT.
Professor Higa is such a nice person and she's really easy to get along with. Don't let her personality fool you, she's an extremely tough grader and if you think out passed her tests, you probably didn't.
Higa is one of the sweetey professors I have ever met. That being said she is one of the hardest professors on campus. I took her for a freshman class and she does not go easy on you. Take your classes with anyone but her. Go to her for help but do not take her class. She made me hate bio.
Takes 2 months to grade tests, lectures are unorganized and all over the place, learned less than all of the other classes, overall bad first semester experience
As a person, Dr. Higa is such a sweetheart. I felt like I could go to her to talk about anything whether it was personal or academic. As a professor, she's extremely tough. No matter how well you think you do, she will find something wrong with it. Grading takes forever. Lectures are interesting, but won't help you do well. Don't expect an A.
HARD HARD HARD. Very knowledgeable, however she expects us to become doctors in biology by the end of the semester. Lectures are quick and scattered. She has office hours but when talking about class, it is very hard to approach. Outside of class she is a wonderful lady. If it was a judgement of character she would get flying colors, but worst prof
She is a very caring person but here class is set up for 100% genius to do well in. I am a very hard worker but I still couldn't do well in her class. Doing everything I could to study for Test 2 to get a grade higher than Test (F) my score was a D. I have a great deal of respect for her, it's just that she is hard and that is that.
Horrible professor, great person and is very intelligent, however doesn't know how to teach this information to students. On top of not being able to teach the material, she's a very tough grader so make sure you're aware of this. Do not take her if you want to get a good grade or even understand the material.
Dr. Higa is a nice person but the absolute worst professor I have ever had. Her exams are extremely difficult and if you do not have exactly what she wants you to write on her open ended questions she will give you no credit at all. She will look for reasons to prove your answer incorrect and does not go easy on students. Avoid her at all costs.
Dr. Higa is an approachable lady outside of class. Her classes: both lab and lecture are awful. If you do not have something specific to what she wants, then you will not get credit for your answer. Her tests are the hardest things, but if you do get her, then do all the learning objectives bc thats where all the test questions are from.
Dr. Higa is a wonderful person, she will take all the time in the world to explain something to you outside of class and has interactive questions to keep you engaged. She can be a tough grader but only because she wants you to do well as a biology major.
This professor grades labs like you should be talking to her in the form of a research paper. Also when she gives feedback , she is condescending. I think the only lesson i learned , is to pick a different professor next year.
Here is the truth, if you are not intelligent or willing to work. You will not pass. Dr. Higa is a very smart and wonderful person, she is not a terrible professor in the least bit. I did all of her learning objectives and studied them, and passed each test easily. The most difficult part of this class was only the lab write-ups. I learned so much
Dr. Higa seemed to be a great prof the first week or two. She easily got behind in the material, and then told the class to learn the rest on our own. If you write her an email for any reason, you should feel incredibly lucky if she replies. Homework grades are a big part, so get it done. Participate when possible, she fails you if you haven't.
Dr. Higa was a knowledgable professor and wants her students to understand the material rather than just memorizing it. The syllabus is clear of what you need to do (unless she gets behind, which she always does). There is a lot of work on your own to prepare for tests. Tip: Take notes on what is said rather than what is on the slides (online).
Nice person but if you enjoy biology I advise you do not take her course. Her test are extremely complicated and she does nothing to help if you are confused over the lecture discussion. Every exam average for the class was nothing over a 79%.
Dr. Higa is extremely nice and informative however, she grades as if we too have a biology doctorate. Her tests are extremely difficult and if you don't have exactly what she wants in the open ended, you will get the whole thing wrong. She rushes through the chapters and does nothing to help you if confused. AVOID HER IF YOU WANT TO PASS BIO150!
Lectures are not that difficult, but the labs are graded and a inconsiderate level which makes the class hard to pass.
Don't take this class with this professor if you are hoping to pass
She is a respected professor but her teaching is very memorization based. All she really does is talk at you and she covers A LOT of information in each class. You have to work very hard for your grade in this class. She is always open to questions though. I payed attention, took notes, and still didn't get a good grade. All I can say is work hard.
Dr. Higa is by far the worst professor I've ever encountered. She may seem extremely kind but she is harsh in her grading to a point that its almost impossible to pass. If you have the option not to take her classes please do so. Don't put yourself in a position where you don't want to pursue a degree/career bc of her. Also STUDY HARD in her class!
Dr. Higa is a very kind professor. She gives an outline of her notes but can move pretty quickly through them. The textbook is definitely worth reading as she has tough short answer questions that I've only answered well because I read the textbook aloud to myself. I would just be sure to read the textbook and take every chance to ask questions.
Unlike lecture, she is outstanding in lab. She gives you pretty much all you need to know about the lab before you do it so you barely even have to read the procedure. My labs always go smoothly in there because she is extremely helpful. She is super approachable when asking questions and is a huge help with the post lab sheets as well.
Nice woman, but need to learn her testing style to succeed. Keep up to date with textbook readings, they are very helpful. Learning objectives are key, study from them and the chapter quizzes. Excellent in lab and lecture, her grading is what inhibits the experience. Take someone else as a freshman, but if you like virology maybe take later.
She was the worst professor I have ever had. She didn't care about the students. Had like 9 people drop the class while in it. She wouldn't respond to emails. Didn't care to help succeed. Didn't grade things until last week so we didn't know if we were failing. Took this class with another professor and passed with flying colors.
Professor Higa is the worst biology professor ever she rushes her lectures and grades very harshly. She makes you feel like an idiot when you fail and the guided notes make no sense. DO NOT take professor Higa if you want to do well in bio 150. Unless you are a god at memorization and answer the open ended response questions to her liking good luck
She's a very sweet woman but she's got a very hard class. Her exams are not in the usual fashion one would be used to, way harder than the actual material you're meant to learn for it. She tries to teach but if you miss one day you will be week behind. She crams a lot of topics into one lesson, often expecting you to know things right away.
We go over lectures in class and the material isn't even on the test. Over half of our class failed last semester, when we would ask questions shed look at us like we were dumb. When I knew I was on the verge of failing I asked what I could do and if she had any tips and she told me I was going to fail. 100% DO NOT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU HAVE TO
Professor Higa is a very nice lady, and is great in lecture. The downfall of the class is the tests, as most tests were very difficult to comprehend and relate back to lecture. I believe she is starting to make tests more manageable, as tests began getting increasingly more understandable; make sure to study and ask questions as much as possible.
She is a very nice person and willing to help you, but she never answers her emails when you need her. Her notes are very confusing, and I felt like I didn't have enough information exams. Her tests are hard because of how much you have to apply and lack of notes it feels like she give you. Also doesn't give you much to study for tests or finals
The worst part is how slow of a grader she is, she waited until 3 days before the grades were dur to start grading half of the course. She is a slow responder & her notes do not correlate with the test well. Most people grades will be inflated by the extra credit she gave. When most people fail & only 1-2 get an A, it says something abt the prof.
Higa was a very nice professor, but very difficult to learn from. She often rushed and crammed so many things in a single lecture, which made it impossible to understand. If you miss a class, you're almost guaranteed to have your grade drop because of the material you'll miss and the assignments she gives during class.
if you pay attention in this course and ask her to repeat the explanation , you will get it. she loves science and is very excited to teach and excited for you to see the world of biology as she does, beautifully
i liked her and she was down explain to me. go to office and ask questions
fun and patient
Beware: she picks favorites, thats why she's liked by some. Walked out of our lab one time and screamed outside the door because the freshmen asked clarifying questions. Her instructions are unclear but she expects you to understand and just do it and if you ask her she gets annoyed. Takes forever to grade. She's a good person, horrible professor.
She is a very fair professor in lecture in my opinion. As long as you pay attention in lectures and take good notes, homework and assignments should come easily. Tests are heavily based on application but are not difficult if you understand the topics thoroughly. She does take a long time to grade many assignments. She is a bit disorganized in lab.
She does not teach the material very well. She will go through the slides and write notes on the board however the notes you are given DO NOT prepare you for the exams. The notes don't have the same/enough information. Will dock a lot of petty points of assignments that really hurt your grade over the semester (even if you answered from her notes).
You will feel like their is something wrong with you if you ask a question cause she will never give you a straight answer. All other labs also took notes to help with the post labs and we never did making it very hard. Would never take her as a professor again.
DO NOT TAKE DR. HIGA'S CLASS! All she has in her class are quizzes and there's a really big quiz that is only one attempt before your big exam! The quiz is also timed, and you don't have enough time to finish it! She is like one of the worse professors I have ever had! Please take another professor if you want to pass Bio! She will NOT HELP YOU!
If you aren't religious you better pick a religion and stick to it because she will have you praying on your knees after each exam. The exams include little to no material covered in class and when you confront her about she says, "there's nothing she can do" and that you need to "work harder".
Literally run. She is a nice person but doesn't grade anything on time. Very test heavy and it'll come on like a stack of bricks. You test averages will be in the 50s or 60s.
DO NOT TAKE. Takes forever to grade. Bad communication. Takes petty points. Many students struggled to pass. Earlier in the semester, I told her my situation. She told me to quit my job, study harder, and not worry. I reminded her last week, and she told me there's nothing she can do, regardless of me doing everything she asked, aside from quitting
If you wan't someone to teach you biology DO NOT take this prof! She will teach you what she thinks is accurate information, but a majority of her content will not be on your exams! Class averages on exams are usually between 40-60. She thinks that we aren't studying enough....... Don't try to ask her for help because she will not even try to help.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL! Her lectures are super boring and all you have to do is study really hard in the class if you want to pass! If you are not that kind of person, she is NOT YOUR PROFESSOR!!! If you ask her for help, she will NOT help you at all. Find another professor if you can.
She is HORRIBLE!!! Makes you hate biology and grades like she depends on it! She gives out pointless quizzes and study guides along with difficult exams! She may be sweet but her grades are not! Avoid her at all cost!
DO NOT TAKE HER AT ALL! She is NOT helpful! She is horrible! There is NO homework in the class other than assessment checks along with quizzes and exams! The assessment checks do NOT HELP! You really have to focus if you want to pass the class and if you think you can't do it, DO NOT REGISTER FOR HER SECTION!
I will never take her again! She expects you to spend 8+ hours a day outside of class on the lecture alone (not including labs). Yes, she knows what she's talking about, but she doesn't know how to teach it properly. If you want to take her, you need to know all the topics before stepping into the classroom. Good luck if you decide to take her.
SHE EXPECTS US TO GET EVERYTHING IN 50 MIN OF CLASS. she hates all of you and she wants you to put bio ABOVE EVERYTHING.
DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE!
Higa is one of, if not THE worst, professors at YCP. She is so rude and condescending if you ask any sort of question or need any kind of help. She talks so fast and will not slow down even if the entire class asks her to. Good luck missing class, you'll never catch up again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you're not pre-med, do not listen to the registrar when they tell you it's equivalent ... IT'S NOT. I wish I had never wasted my time on this class.
The instructor wasn't very effective at teaching. She moved too fast and taught as if we already knew the material. In office hours, she didn't explain why my answers were wrong or how to improve. She didn't explain the “why,” and she seemed a bit rude, so the help didn't support my learning.
She sucks don't take her
I will rate this professor honestly. I took this professor in-person for lecture and lab. I am very traumatized ONLY in my first semester of college. She ruined my opportunities and gave me more anxiety and stress. Expects 8 to 10 hours of your day. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR EVER! I literally cried every week... NOT a professor you want.
She will TRAMATIZE you! This is my honest opinion. Even if you're hardworking, you will struggle in her class. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR EVER! I KNOW it's UNFAIR! THIS SHOULD NOT be taken as an EQUIVALENT credit for the nursing program, as this course was ridiculously hard!
