Funny Guy
Medhi is one of the kindest, most intelligent teachers I have ever had. Although I am not a sociology major, I found the subject to be fascinating as we studied the basics of sociology.
really good, and very interesting
He is a wonderful man. Hard class though.
really great prof. really funny.
he is a great man with great intensions. probably one of the most kind-hearted people I have ever met. really fun, interesting class. if you want to pass, you have to read.
Medhi is a great guy. Can make a class of 300 students laugh for an hour. this class was pretty tough. Exam averages are pretty much Cs. BUT all other grades are usually As (papers, individual assignments, group discussion papers). you have to be willing to read. if you dont have time to read, dont take this class.you WILL fail. super cool guy thou
Amazing teacher. Really helpful and really cares about the students. This class really changed my perspective on things and I would recommend it to everyone. There is a lot of reading, but you can get by with skimming. Best teacher.
Love and relationships was the best class ever! Haghshenas was great he will be like the dad everyone hopes for telling the class he loves us all the time! You actually have to read for this class and understand what you're reading, but if you get into it you will be fine. The group presentations are pretty easy too.
Instructor is funny, but hard to understand sometimes. The final paper is what brought me down from an A to a B in this class. the TA Amber is very good, but was very specific on how the final paper was formatted. There are not many grades in this class so be sure you do the final paper right.
I feel refreshed every time I go to this class. As long as you pay attention and do the readings, you can get an A. He's a great professor and a wonderful man, and he really cares about his students. The TA's are wonderful too. I would definitely suggest his class.
Hundreds of pages of required reading. Even when doing the reading, difficult to pass. This class has changed.
Lots of reading, and the tests were very difficult. Not an easy class.
Very difficult tests and loads or reading.
Not an easy class at all, lots of reading involved.
tests are nearly impossible to get an A on
This is cross-listed with MES 310; however, nothing of Middle Eastern content is covered. The tests are gratuitous; he also adjusts the grading scale at the end of the semester and hurt everyone in the class. So disappointed; though he really is a nice man.
So extremely nice and encouraging. A great professor, and it is definitely a class that I can see affecting my life in a positive way. I would recommend it fully.
I wish everyone could take one of his classes- he is by far the most inspirational and kindhearted person I've ever met.
I had Medhi my freshman year, and whenever he sees me on campus he remembers me by name and stops to talk to me. Amazing man, passionate about his work, and is so pleasant in office hours. He wants you to succeed. Take his classes.
This was one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. Learned a bit about the history of love and relationships, but even more about life and the universe in general, I feel like. Medhi's optimism and overall outlook on life is extremely positive and contagious. Take this class if you need a boost in life.
mehdi is genuinely one of the most interesting and intelligent people i've ever met. the class is incredibly emotional at times & he really fosters a camaraderie among a relatively large class. there's a lot of reading and the tests are pretty difficult, but i think it's worth it. if you are an introspective type, this is a class for you.
Medhi is so genuine and intriguing. He a majestic creature sent from above to teach the world sociology. His lectures are incredibly interesting; that being said, you need to attend to pass. There is a lot of required reading, but it is all very relevant interesting. His sociology class is my favorite class I've ever taken in college.
Medhi is so adorable and so passionate about sociology that it is quite infectious. His lectures aren't too bad to sit through if you try to pay attention but can be eh when he goes too fast or randomly calls on you. Readings are essential to passing and there's a lot so beware slacking off. Overall, Medhi is really chill and his TAs are helpful.
Lots of reading.
There is ALOT of reading required. The tests are fairly difficult especially if you do not read the chapters assigned and the articles in the course packet.
This class was super interesting to me. I do have to say there were a lot of other people in my class who felt like it was boring or that there was too much reading. But I really thought the readings were interesting and if you just read and pay attention in class you won't have to study (I didn't study at all and got an A)
Amazing professor/person. He genuinely cares about his students and people in general. If you pay attention and do 75% of the readings you will most likely get an A. It was a life changing class.
Dr. Haghshenas was one of my favorite professors at UT! He makes learning Sociology enjoyable. The tests aren't hard, and they're pretty straightforward from the lecture and lab. He's super funny too and definitely helpful if you go to office hours. No final, and one paper.
He always always brought great energy and his lectures were very interesting. I kept my additional readings packet because I thought everything was really cool and eye opening. One time he cancelled a quiz because "the room had bad energy" and he gave a lecture on love and friendship instead to "remind us of why we are here". 10/10 recommend
Class is wonderful, he's so passionate and I was genuinely excited to learn with him. After taking this class I want to declare sociology as a minor. This is one of those life changing, eye opening classes and I think everyone should take his class. negative reviews at the bottom seem like someone with a personal vendetta bc this guy is incredible
He's a good lecturer and makes everyone in the class feel loved. The class was pretty enjoyable, and we watched several documentaries in class. The readings, while plentiful, were really interesting. The only minor caveat is that his lectures are sometimes unclear, so you may end up having to teach yourself some of the material, but it's not hard
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Yes, he is eccentric. But he gives a TON of reading. I have an A in this class but I spend more than 7 hours a week reading for it. And its not just the reading- he also says a ton of new stuff in class- and you are expected to know not the majority but ALL of it- AND he CHANGES assignment details at the LAST MINUTE.
Read everything. Listen to everything he says. Memorize each and every line in the textbook. If you're really into reading 250+ pages for each test along with lectures then be my guest.
The most reading I've ever had in a class, its a textbook and a large course packet. Dr. Haghshenas is really knowledgable, caring, and passionate but the class puts way too much weight on reading. His lecture notes are terrible but he's pretty interesting and funny.
Pay attention to every detail. Lectures were incredibly boring, but required, if you miss more than 4 times then the penalty is a letter grade drop. ALOT of reading. Few of the questions from his tests weren't mentioned in lecture, discussions, the textbook OR course packet. For all of the reading that I did and work put in, would not recommend.
Over-hyped. There is an enormous amount of reading, and the class is politically polarizing with a "we vs. them" mentality. He's extremely disorganized; lectures are completely unhelpful. The goal of his class is to teach you how to be a sociologist, not to study relevant trends/concepts in society, so it's not very useful for MCAT prep. Avoid.
SO MUCH READING. His lectures are super unorganized and he is so over-hyped. His notes are all over the place and his rubrics for the essays are so obscure. His class does not prepare you for the MCAT at all and basically tries to make you be "more mindful" of your surroundings. Only take this class if you're really into social conflicts.
There are a lot of readings and and his lectures are really disorganized. You have to take notes quickly during the lectures or else you might miss info that could be on the test. Read the textbook chapters and try to get the gist of all the readings
I don't get all these negative reviews, but I took the LAH section so my class was only about 15 people. So, my experience was different than the usual huge lecture. This was still the best class I've ever taken in college (I'm a junior) and truly changed my life. I love Medhi; he is one of a kind. Hard to get an A, but worth it.
He is the kind of prof who is an amazing person but a bad teacher. There is a lot of reading!!! He speaks very quickly and his lectures are very disorganized and hard to follow. There are three tests and no final and the tests include MC,short answer, and an essay in fifty min. Not awful, but this is NOT a blow off.
He made sociology very interesting and relevant. His lectures have a lot of info but generally expound on the book/readings. I got behind on reading, but it isn't too hard to keep up if you pace yourself. The class was somewhat difficult grade wise but definitely worth it. He made me want to get up in the morning to go to lecture and learn.
He's you classic passionate, inspiring, caring sociology professor but he takes a therapeutic approach to class. This class will not be good for you if you are very technical. He wants you to grow spiritually in this class.
He was very good about answering questions in off. hours, but the classes in general were disorganized. The readings were pretty intense and the tests were unrealistic in how well an ordinary student ought to understand the content. Not the worst choice for this course, but it shouldn't be a first choice. Papers weren't too difficult.
He is a sweet and caring prof. The class can be a little redundant. You have to write A LOT and with a solid amount of effort. There are a ton of articles to read every week, but I never did and got an A. If you are interested in talking about how the media negatively impacts us then this class is for you.
Dr. H is a very inspirational professor, but he tries to force you to love a subject you might not love. He sometimes cold calls, but it isn't too bad. The class is primarily based on who you get as your TA; mine made the class somewhat bearable. Furthermore, tests are "easy", but very long so if you are a slower test taker don't take this class.
What a sweet man! Probably the most caring and positive professor I've ever had. He is very passionate about the subject matter and wants his students to engage with the material. He cares about each of his students deeply. If you read the book, you don't have to go to class. Tests are easy if you know the material. I blow off this class & I'm fine
He is very passionate about what he does and it makes you passionate about it too. Attendance is taken daily by group leaders and if you miss more than 4 classes/ discussions you drop a letter grade. Grades are based on 3 tests, a few short papers, and attendance. Really depends on who you get as your TA because they do all of the grading.
An amazing loving, spiritual light. I took away so much more than the class was based on. Dr. H is the most gracious and mindful professor at UT by far. I encourage anyone to seek out his courses and go talk to him in his office hours. He genuinely just wants his students to thrive and live a positive life. most WOKE prof and person.
Mehdi is an incredible human! He deeply cares about his students and their success and personal growth. There is a lot of reading but its all relevant to the course... also its a sociology class so thats to be expected. Im a senior soc major and this is the best sociology class Ive ever taken.
Really nice person but terrible professor. His TAs are even worse. ESPECIALLY, Dominique. She was TERRIBLE. Very self-centered and obnoxious. This class is just readings. His lectures are SUPER disorganized and he doesnt let the TAs post the slides on canvas so you have to go to class. Dominique can care less about your grade. Heads up.
Super non-specific regarding every assignment. Hes probably the toughest grader Ive ever had. At least 100 pages of reading per night. I wouldnt take him again because this class was way more stressful than it needed to be. You have been warned.
Great guy. Medhi is a really nice guy. The material is super boring, unless you read all the articles and the textbook then it will be super difficult for you.
Prof. is super inspirational and passionate about subject. He wants to see all students succeed. Go to office hours and class, get to know him. The experience you have really depends on the TA you have. Not a hard subject and his lectures make things easy to understand. Loved this class so much I actually picked up a double major in Sociology!
One of the kindest and most spiritual professors ever. Very interesting to talk to and genuinely a nice person who cares for his students a lot (go to office hours!). However, the class requires a lot of outside reading and studying and the lectures are not the easiest to understand. Overall an enjoyable class where you'll learn a good amount.
Medhi is a nice person, but his class is EXTREMELY reading heavy so read or your grade will suffer. The papers and quizzes are not hard but the tests are extremely specific and will bring your grade down significantly. I would recommend this class because Medhi is a great person and the subject is interesting but definitely not easy A.
Lots of reading but its all interesting if you're into sociology. His lectures do give important info but sometimes he gets off track. Discussions help clear up his lectures. You should read all the readings he assigns and the textbook chapters. Its not an easy A or blowoff class, but if you put in the time and work you should get an A or A-
Haghshenas is THE sweetest professor ever. He loves inspiring + making his students feel good. HOWEVER, do not take this class! The tests were extremely hard because not only were the questions crazy specific but a lot of times the wording was rough and hard to understand. After our first test my TA said she's not even sure she would've done well
Took for the upperdiv writing flag. You will only enjoy his class if you are chill with him being granola and having the class meditate. The essays and readings weren't too bad considering how interesting the topics were. I'm not a huge fan of writing/reading, but I thoroughly enjoyed this class and its topics.
Honestly, this class required little to no effort from me. Yes, there are readings outside of class. They are long but there are writing assignments that each group has to do for every unit that pretty much covers the gist of the readings. The exam can get pretty specific, but if you study well and do the readings, you should be gucci.
Dr. Haghshenas is the sweetest professor ever! He really cares about teaching the material properly. His TAs pretty much determine your grade in the class, but ALL of them are solid choices. I had Drew, and he was so helpful and hilarious, I would definitely recommend!! I would advise you to go to class because his tests are super lecture heavy!
Mehdi is absolutely amazing. I took his UGS and the class was so fun. He does this thing where we all bring in snacks and eat. The class is small, and we're all like a family. Yes there is a lot of reading but it's very interesting. Medhi truly cares for all of his students and will greet you and we meditate before each class. TAKE IT. FREE FOOD.
He was so inconsistent. The rubric online for our term paper was vague but he would tell different people different things, and tried to get one girl to change her topic two days before it was due (after he'd approved it). Two went into office hours to look at their tests and he ended up taking points off during their meeting- from A to B for one!
The actual topics aren't hard, but the exam questions are really tricky and are sometimes kind of specific. At the beginning I kept up on all of my reading and pretty much knew everything on the tests, but once I got behind on the reading, my exam grades went down. Tons of reading and takes discipline to keep up. Hard to catch up if you slack off
Medhi is a really nice person but overall not a great teacher. Very unclear instructions led to poor grades and I never fully understood what he expected. He's very smart and interesting and I definitely learned a lot, but I regret taking the class because it hurt my GPA. I mostly just felt confused
The grade consisted of 3 exams (no final), 3 quizzes, and 4 one page essays (which are meant to be grade boosters, the TAs grade easy) Make sure to keep up with readings from the course packet and the textbook! The discussion is very helpful, the TAs go over the most important things from lecture (which is what will likely be on the exam)
Haghshenas is the best!! His lectures are awesome and the TA's do a great job of teaching in discussion sections. He changed up the course format to make it easier - the tests are pretty easy and there's a couple of easy short papers that we go over in class. Bonus: lots of cool documentaries shown in class!
Medhi is clearly passionate about teaching, but his grading style is a bit harsh and he is a bit odd. Very personal and touchy with everyone. TA grades most of our assignments and she grades very strict. I did well in the class but it took a while to get accustomed to the style of writing the TA clearly wanted.
Professor Haghshenas isn't a bad professor. His lectures are very entertaining. He is very accessible after class. The test questions on the other hand can be very tricky especially if you don't know the material. I recommend to always see the TA's and make sure that you are understanding the material and you should receive an easy A
I loved his UGS 302 course, It carried a writing flag so we did about a paper a week over very intriguing and eye opening topics and then followed up with a discussion where we would all bring snacks. Definitely my favorite class and favorite professor!
Prof. Haghshenas was an absolutely amazing professor. He is obviously passionate about his subject matter and for his students. He is always accessible and makes it known that he cares about his students' social well-being. The only thing to be wary of is the class is very reading heavy, but all of the readings are important. 100% recommend.
You have a LOT of outside readings. Take what you are thinking now and multiply it by 5. Even with this, professor cares so much about you and your well being. He led us in meditation sometimes before class when he could see we were stressed.
I took SOC302 with Medhi... He is such a wonderful and caring individual. As for the course content, most of it is pretty intuitive, so if you go to class/discussion and skim/get the main idea from the readings, you'll be good! There is one required group presentation but it was really chill. Not much commitment for this class but you learn a lot!
His lectures were interesting and I learned a lot about societal issues. Tests were short answers and multiple choice; to do well, you have to read a lot of material and he would also ask questions about videos he showed in class. He offered one extra credit but other professors are definitely easier than him because his class is not an easy A.
Dr. Haghshenas is an admirable professor that truly cares for his students. There is A LOT of reading and some of them can be difficult to understand.. His lectures are great and he and the TAs are more than happy to clarify concepts. Tests can be specific so make sure you read everything, go to lectures, watch documentaries and group presentations
Dr. H is an absolute gem! His lectures are very interesting, but I'd say reading and grasping the material from the course pack (textbook) is the real key to making an A in the course. Pay special attention to topics covered in discussion and to the films watched in class, as that material is likely to appear on exams. Essays are a piece of cake!
At first I was sad I didn't get off Reece's waitlist, but taking Medhi's class was the best thing that happened to me this entire semester. It is reading heavy, but the topics we covered honestly changed my life perspective. For tests, I found quizlet reviews on the readings and discussion PPTs to be helpful. Maria was an amazing TA!!
Dr. Haghshenas is the only reason I have self-confidence. Take this professor and take this class. The TA's were amazing and wanted to help you and be there for any questions or concerns. My TA emailed us at the end of the semester offering to help us with anything we need in the future - academic or not. Really above and beyond professor.
Dr. Haghshenas was such an enthusiastic professor. He inspired me to continue studying SOC and I honestly felt encouraged to do the heavy reading. The reading is very interesting material as well so it never felt like a hassle.
I love Dr. Haghshenas's class! He is a phenomenal professor and very invested in his classes. He truly changes your perspective about the world once you take his course. One thing is that it's very reading heavy and the only way to pass with an A/A+, you HAVE TO read. The TA's are great and very lenient with grading. You won't regret his class!
Dr. Haghshenas is a phenomenal professor, very passionate, and invested in his work. This was the second class I took with him and I wasn't disappointed. He will change your perspective about society and how you see yourself. His tests are based on the articles, so PLEASE read them. The TA was lenient and helpful with the assignments. Great class!
He's truly one of the best professors I've had at UT. I have taken him for Soc 302 and 308 and he's very caring about his students. Do the readings or even skim them and you'll be fine. The TA's are nice graders as well. The exams can be slightly difficult but the other grades will help you.
Reading can be a PAIN but Mehdi Haghshenas makes it worth it! He's incredibly kind and makes the class totally doable. Best proff/teacher I've ever had! Do the readings and pay attention in class- you'll make an A. Honestly, so many of the readings/lectures changed my perspective on social issues. The class will change your life. TAKE IT!
Best teacher I've ever had. I tell everyone how much I loved his classes Soc 302 and 308. He makes everyone feel so valued. I just think he's the absolute best teacher ever, and I have many friends who have said the same thing. Take this class if you want a spiritual awakening and to actually enjoy going to class. Just so interesting and chill.
Sociology of creativity--could be inspiring if he was a lenient person and acted how he instructs all of us to act. No excuses or leniency for any late work, straight 0. No excuses for missing a single class, straight 0. He asks us to bring our own opinions, but his questions want u 2 justify his. Test over all the readings & your classmates ppts.
Mehdi is a gem. He is one of the wisest people I have ever met, and lectures were truly inspirational. There was a lot of reading that I couldn't keep up with, which led to my demise during tests and a lower final grade. Projects and group presentations were fun, and the topics were really interesting and changed my world perspective.
i think dr mehdi is truly a joy of a human being. we started class by clearing our mind and taking deep breaths, which i found nice. LOTS of reading of textbook pages and specific articles before class, but theyre all very interesting and id highly recommend reading everything at some point or another even if you fall behind during the term.
Honestly the best professor I've ever had! He's very engaging and the class is extremely interesting. The TA he had was a very easy grader but I don't know about his new TA. There is a lot of reading, but you should be fine as long as you space it out. Attend the office hours!
Prof Haghshenas is one of the sweetest and most caring professors Ive met. His keeps his lecture fun with his demeanor but I will say the class is pretty reading heavy. So long as you attend class and do the readings though you will be fine. It was a great class overall and I the topics in general were very interesting.
Medhi is quite literally the most precious person on this planet. On our last class day, he gave us our last quiz as participation and the chat was flooding with how much we love him because he's really so sweet and thoughtful. Mostly I would worry about your TAs; mine was a little weird but the others were fine. Medhi himself is great:(
Some of the readings in this class literally almost brought me to tears (in a good way). They taught me things about society that I had always sensed were there but I could not identify easily (as well as many many things that I did not know). This has been the most interesting and mind-opening class I have taken at UT. Mehdi is caring and the best
Medhi is so caring and makes learning sociology fun. You do need to do the readings, but most if not all the text is interesting. Make sure to attend your discussion sections (attendance matters!) and going to lectures is important. The class consisted of readings, 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and group assignments.
Dr. Haghshenas is a true gem. He cares so much about his students, and makes class incredibly engaging, lectures are very insightful. It's relatively easy to get a good grade (depends on your TA), 3 tests, 3 quizzes, a few write-ups, and no final. You won't regret taking his class, he's awesome!
Dr. Haghshenas is truly an inspirational professor. He has completely changed my perspective about how I see the social world. That being said, changing perspectives takes work. If you are looking for easy, don't take this class. But I promise, if you do the work you will not only do well but have one of the most eye-opening experiences in college
Mehdi is such a caring person and is really passionate about the material, I highly recommend him. There can be a lot of reading but just doing a light skim and paying attention during lecture is really all you need to do. The exams are pretty straight forward with a mix of essays and multiple choice, but the essays are graded pretty lightly.
This class was one of my favorites this semester. They assign a lot of readings, but you can honestly get away with just skimming them if you go to lectures. The grading/difficulty of grading is HIGHLY dependent on your TA unfortunately. The professor is a super interesting lecturer, I would totally recommend.
This class is pretty easy as long as you read the required materials. Tests are 60% of your grade and are hard (mix of essays and mcq) but not impossible. Grades really depend on what TA you have. I never really attended class and got an A so it's not too difficult, but I recommend going because Professor Haghshenas is super wise and sweet!
Medhi is a wonderful person and a truly inspirational lecturer. He wants his students to better their own lives by the end of the class. But, there is a LOT of reading from two course packets worth $50 total. The tests are both FRQs and MCQs. Your TA matters! I had a rough TA which made the class hard, but it's fault of Medhi.
Medhi is truly an inspirational person with such a big heart. He genuinely cares for his students and taking his class really changed my perspective on the world. This class is really dependent on your TA and heavily dependent on attending lectures and the textbook readings. The readings are really eye opening if you get the chance to read them
Medhi is truly a gem! He is the sweetest professor and is sooo inspirational during class. However, there are A LOT of readings that need to be completed every week. I got away with not studying very much for the exams but often times the questions were very specific. I think your experience in the class depends on your TA and how involved they are
MEDHI is king! He is hands down the best sociology teacher at UT. I love him. Take him.
Mehdi is very unique, funny, and caring. He gives the lectures, but a lot of the class is run by the TAs, who are amazing. The homework is a lot of reading and some documentaries, but they are genuinely VERY interesting. For grades, there are group essays/projects and exams. The exams are weighted HEAVILY so you have to make sure to study for them.
Mehdi was a good professor. He really cared about his students and is very passionate about sociology. His class is basically ran by his TA's. The coursework wasn't too bad. We had probably like five papers to write based off of readings and three exams the entire semester. No final. There was lots of reading. Grading on exams is based on your TA.
Medhi is truly one of the best professors I have EVER taken. He is so kind and passionate about the information in his class. I loved his lectures and the concepts were fascinating. He is incredibly wholesome and he has a wonderful group of TA's to support him. Our main TA, Mike, was an INCREDIBLE TA, as he was so passionate and knowledgeable.
Dr. Haghshenas was honestly one of the best teachers I've ever had. His personality was so incredible and he cares so deeply about his students' learning. Exams and quizzes are relatively easy so long as you keep up with your readings. DO THE READINGS! I loved listening to him speak and he made it very easy to give your opinion. Love him!
An unnecessary amount of weekly readings that he barely went over in lecture. There were little to no slides for lectures, so it's important to pay close attention.
Meh. I signed up for this class pretty excited about the content and I didn't find the lectures to be that engaging. The tests are kinda dumb (pulling random questions from random readings) and somewhat arbitrarily graded. He's kind of a funny guy, especially when he yells out of nowhere, but I'm not sure the class is worth it.
I looove Medhi as a person, but as a teacher he was too vague and occasionally hypocritical about expectations-- just confusing/chaotic in general plus a ton of reading. He also left everything to the TA, and the class was constant group work + presentations.
Fascinating content. Unfortunately, it gets repetitive for the sheer volume you must be able to pinpoint (despite his saying you only need to understand it). He doesn't lecture it either-- students do (by cramming buckets of info into assembly line presentations). He's a fascinating person as well... just disliked the class's organization :(
Dr. Haghshenas is really sweet and kind. He loves his students and sociology. The course material was not particularly interesting to me (I am a stem major) but I liked Dr. Haghshenas a lot. He is funny and makes sociology about you. The exams were kind of different because they relied heavily on small details from readings.
Mehdi is a sweetheart and I really liked this class. It depends a lot on which TA you get because they're responsible for your discussion sections, group projects, essays, and test grading. The essays are fairly simple, but the multiple-choice part of the test can be difficult. You have to work to get an A, but it's definitely possible!
He is an amazing professor, really funny and engaging. Really comes down to what TA you have, everything is graded by them and discussions are really helpful. The tests are really specific to the readings and documentaries, so put in the work you'll be fine. The tests can be a little tricky so make sure to ask the TA what they are looking for.
Class was OK, never really went after the first exam. Shoutout to Tayler really your study guides made it so I never had to go to class!!
Medhi is a warm and caring professor. However, I would say that he had less to do with your success in the class as compared to the TA that you get. The TAs do all of the grading, so the main thing that you get from Mehdi are his lectures. There is quite a bit of reading, which is necessary in order to do well on the exams. Overall a good course.
Your TA for this class is super important. They do lots of the grading, and Mike was a super chill TA. Join the GroupMe as lots of people post reviews which are super helpful in succeeding in the class. There are one-page paragraph assignments which are really easy 100s. Cole also had really good reviews before exams. Overall, great course!
Dr. Haghshenas was amazing!! His lectures were very interesting and he's very funny. Your grade depends on a few things so be aware of that, but assignments were easy imo. I absolutely loved this class and would 100% take it again.
I am currently enrolled in this class and read some of the reviews. I saw one person who liked Tayler's study guides. I was wondering if someone could send her guides my way-willing to pay. Thanks!
Medhi is really funny, but honestly, his lectures mean nothing. Lecture attendance should not be required especially because his lectures go over nothing in the readings and he goes off on random tangents. The TA's run the entire class pretty much. I was lucky and got a really chill TA, so it really depends.
Professor loves what he does, but lectures are difficult to keep up with which sucks because test rely solely on the readings and lectures. Often times he'd show something and say "you don't need to write this down" and then it would be on the test... Caring professor no doubt, but it simply cannot make up for the sheer amount of reading needed
I was stressed the entire semester! He is a really nice and caring guy, but so confusing. Make sure to sit in the front because you can barely hear him in the back. Tests are super heavy on readings, so make sure you keep up with them.
Probably the most wholesome man on campus. Loves students and is very xo passionate. Class has tons of reading (like 100+ pages a week) but is mostly interesting. 40% of grade are group projects and quizzes, and 60% are 3 exams (no final). An absolute sweetheart and doesnt want anyone to fail. An easy A if you read and have some common sense tbh
Mehdi is such a sweet man and his class was very eye-opening. However, there were a lot of readings every week and to get an A, you kind of have to read everything. Your grade also depends on the TA but all of them are great and really helpful. This class really helped me better understand the world around me, so I would recommend.
Professor Haghshenas has been an absolutely fantastic professor. In regard to his class the concepts were really easy to grasp. In order to succeed I suggest you do all of the readings each week so you don't fall behind. We had 4 short essays and group presentations, 3 quizzes, and 3 exams with no final. Pay attention to lectures and READ!!!
Exams were easy but lots of writing. Your grade depends mostly on TA. Mine wasn't very clear or good but he was alright. Did better on exams than group workshops. There are lots of readings. If anything, just read the chapters and watch documentaries. Concepts are easy. There are easier soc profs if you're taking rigorous classes or are pre-med.
While the content for the course is very easy and Prof Hagshenas is a really nice guy, he does not teach well and his lectures were meaningless. His lectures were ass and attendance is mandatory.. with how easy the content is everyone should get an A. But you have to teach yourself everything and the exams are unnecessarily difficult.
Hagshenas is a great professor who cares, but he is very lecture heavy, and often times the class is super confusing
He is an amazing professor who really cares about his students. His lectures are interesting and he keeps the class engaged with stories and different tones of voice. The class is not hard if you do the readings and watch the films. Highly recommend this course and professor I really enjoyed this class.
I had a great time taking his course. Professor Haghshenas is a very unique person and is the perfect instructor for this type of material. He's incredibly insightful and very kind to his students. The class was easy to manage, as we only had reading pages, weekly group projects, a few papers, and one midterm. Highly recommend his classes!
Professor Haghshenas is a wonderful human being. He is exceptionally kind, compassionate, and VERY mindful during his lectures. The things I learned in this class were quite fascinating. Very reading heavy, but I often found the readings to be insightful and interesting. Exams have a substantial number of essay responses but weren't too bad.
Mehdi is an awesome professor who cares a lot for his students. If you miss a group activity he will be okay with you turning it in late and he grades everything fairly quickly. The discussions are actually pretty interesting and the group projects are not hard. I will say that they take a bit of time since you have to do a thorough reflection.
Medhi is such an interesting guy, I've never had a prof like him before. The lectures were very cool and informative but the exams are taken almost entirely from the readings. Seriously, DO NOT skip or get behind on readings. As long as you are on top of your readings the class isn't that hard.
I would get up to go to lecture just to feel calm. I learned and would be enlightened. He is a loving human being who embodies the most unconditional live I have seen live. He cancelled our last quiz just because he is nice and brought us a bag of mandarin oranges to share with our 200+ lecture hall. He picks his TA's to be good people, too.
He's the closest thing I've seen to Buddha. His words - his voice - they will soothe your inner turmoil and purify your soul. Incredible. That being said, this class requires quite an effort. The readings are interesting, but very copious. You must read to do well on the exams, so NEVER fall behind on them. Left this class feeling very loved.
Prof Haghshenas is such a sweet man, but his lectures are pretty much useless. The biggest thing is reading (there's a lot), but the topics are not hard to grasp. We had a few papers too, but they were generously graded depending on your TA. The exams were pretty challenging, but as long as you read, it's not bad. I recommend study groups too.
If you're pre-med or not into soc, DO NOT TAKE, lectures are constat note-taking no breaks & and lots of reading a week. You can get an A, 4 easy essays, he tells what's on quizzes. A class that if you fall behind, is extremely hard to catch up. Tests based on both lecture and readings with specific examples pulled. He is very passionate about soc!
Mehdi is so nice and understanding. The class requires a lot of reading but if you pace yourself and take notes, the tests are straightforward. Beware--you will feel rushed taking tests, but pace your studying and you'll be fine. There were class reps who tracked attendance but if you're lucky, attendance is optional
He is VERY disorganized. He shows his lecture notes through a camera projector and doesn't share his notes, so you have to attend to take notes if you can jot them down in time. VERY reading intensive, and your experience in this class depends on your TA. My TA wasn't helpful, so I studied from other TA's resources. Seems like a cool dude though.
Prof Medhi is a great guy who genuinely cares for his students. The amount of reading has to set some sort of record. Should you keep up with it? Yes. Can you still get an A without reading most things? Also yes. Go to discussion and pay attention during lecture and you'll be fine. Oh and the documentaries were fascinating!
Medhi is a great prof who's truly passionate about sociology. Get ahead on reading, cause you'll fall behind at some point, it's inevitable. I recommend taking the class w/a friend because he talks quickly and it took two (fast typers) to type the notes. TA can make it or break it. I had a great TA, but a friend had a harsh grader.
Mehdi is the kindest professor imaginable. His lectures are inspiring and calming and a joy to attend. But don't let his sweet disposition fool you, you have to attend discussion sections, read the textbook, and pay attention in lecture if you want to do well.
I took SOC 302 with Dr. Haghshenas in Spring 2023. Though a bit eccentric, he is passionate about sociology and his students. His lectures are a bit fast, but you get to review the content during discussion section. The exam questions, half multiple-choice and half free-response, are fairly simple and come mostly from the readings.
Proof that an amazing professor can make any course great. Passionate (and eccentric) lecturer, extremely caring about his students. His class on love and relationships is very reading heavy, and while I bombed the quizzes and tests on them, he is lenient on his projects and wants you to succeed. Very relevant and applicable course content.
He is very very very nice. He calls us his grandchildren and tells us he loves us every day. There is quite a bit of reading for this course (like 1000 pages in total), but you really don't need to do it to pass. But if you want an A then do at least half of the reading and watch all the documentaries because they are always on the tests.
Professor Haghshenas is very kind, but not your average professor. He is very spiritual--especially for a Sociology professor. His feedback may not always be very specific or satisfactory. My biggest advice to anyone taking this class is to write things that will interest or emotionally move him. He loves to feel!
One of the most amazing and heartfelt professors I have ever had. Class is definitely pretty heavy with readings, but the content is truly so interesting that it flies by. Would definitely recommend Medhi's sociology class to everyone!
Describing the word "hard" for this class is an understatement. Firstly, NONE of the grading criteria was clear. He randomly docked off points and had zero rubrics. Secondly, he is incredibly DISORGANIZED. The syllabus is a mess, with different fonts and font sizes. Thirdly, the exams are ridiculously complicated, focusing on IRRELEVANT details.
Medhi was the worst professor I've ever had the displeasure to meet. He was incredibly disorganized, and his grading was completely subjective. If your opinions did not align with his, you were wrong. He deducted points randomly and did not explain why. Nothing in this class was factual and instead whatever he decided he believed in that day.
While he rarely gives 100s on papers and has unclear grading criteria, the class is very interesting - you get out what you put in. It's composed of a few papers and weekly informal group presentations on the week's (large amnt of) material. He's definitely a character (positive) but cares deeply abt his students. Take his class if you can!
Mehdi is by far my favorite professor thus far, he is so caring and very kind. The TAs give different study guides depending on who you have. Medhdi is disorganized, he shows his notes on a projector and reads them VERY fast. The essays are graded very easy, but he doesn't give 100s. he course is very reliant on the readings. 3 quizzes and exams.
Dr. Haghshenas is a very kind man who genuinely cares for his students. The tests for this course are difficult so you will have to do the long readings to do well on them. There were times when the professor would give us grace and cancel quizzes so that was very nice. Your experience in the class does depend on your TA since they grade your work.
long readings but an amazing eccentric positive man with a super sweet team. honestly readings and paying attention are key to doing well. go to lecture, participate even a little in discussions, and you won't need too much review for exams. if you dont want to read DO NOT take this class. u cannot escape that requirement. amazing interesting class
Professor Mehdi is SO thoughtful and he truly cares about his students. However, this class is exam heavy (66%).. The exams can be really specific, and quite tricky, but if you study and do all the readings, you will receive a good score. The TAs are extremely helpful and I loved them. If you can get Noah, definitely do!! Be prepared to read a lot.
I did not like this class. The lectures went by TOO fast and it was impossible to write ANYTHING down in time. He was very nice, but the tests were 66% of our grade, so if you get a low B on 1 test, it is impossible to get an A in the course (A = 93+%). The TA discussion sections were the ONLY good thing about this course. Would NOT recommend.
VERY DISORGANIZED. The syllabus was an actual mess to read and the "textbook" was legit just photo copies of articles. He shows up to lecture with a projector and disorganized bullet points, which make lecture useless and boring. TA discussions carry the class, but it isn't enough to save it. He's sweet but just so disorganized; DONT TAKE.
Amazing professor! He cares about his students so much. You do have to read a lot, but most readings are very interesting and expand on what you already know. His lectures can be disorganized, but as long as you read the textbook, it's very easy to get an A in this class.
Make sure you are either a fast typer or take pictures because he doesn't upload the slides and he shows the notes for the class by putting pieces of paper under a projector and swipes them away pretty fast. You don't really have to do any of the readings as long as you take notes on the slides during the discussions. Overall fairly easy
What a strange guy. People like his hippy personality, but it's clearly an act and it freaks me out. You'll see he's just a bitter man who didn't get into medical school if you talk to him in office hours. The reading load is almost impossible to manage, and the pop quizzes are so annoying. Save your sanity and take SOC 302 with someone else.
The amount of reading in this class is insane, and felt even harder than my upper-divion classes. This is supposed to be an intro, lower division class. The exams are ridiculously long which makes it impossible to finish in 50 minutes. He is a caring person and a nice person, but read the syllabus before registering! It is very disorganized fyi
He's a very sweet guy but lectures were a bit disorganized at times. He has your best intentions at heart but sometimes it felt like a lot of work for little reward.
Wonderful dude, super positive and sweet; his little comments before and during lecture are an amazing start to the day. With that said however, his lectures are insanely disorganized. Grade in class will be pretty much dependent on your TA, so I hope you get lucky (I sure didn't). Other reviews are right- there is SO much reading. Too much even.
Class was okay. Super hard to pay attention to lectures, but test were overall easy. Memorize his lecture slides and make sure you can put it into your own words for essay questions on test but for two of the test I only had time to study the night before and I ended up doing well so not a lot of material per test.
Class is a lot of reading, including both textbook and journal articles and is a lot for an intro course. The prof only projects printed paper notes and it was at times unclear what was gonna be on the test. Your TA is gonna be a major resource in this class, but overall if you do the work you'll probably be fine. Tests are 66% of your grade though
I barely attended lecture; it's not really necessary, but the professor seems pretty nice. All that is necessary is studying the general themes of the readings and paying attention in discussion sessions.
Attendance is mandatory, if you miss >= 3 lectures, your grade gets docked a whole letter. Always check in your attendance with the group leaders he appoints (not the TA's, you'll see what I mean on the first day). Textbook is very important, along with the discussion sections for test preparation. My TA, Kyungmo, was wonderful and guided us well.
Lectures can be disorganized, but the professor is a nice guy. Expect a heavy reading load, but focus on understanding the main themes and being able to apply concepts in your own words. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for exams.
Honestly, I didn't take notes in the lecture or do the reading after the first month and the class was fine. The amount of reading was so ridiculous, I couldn't do it and we had papers once very two weeks usually. My TA was really great, so I did well on the tests, quizzes, and papers, but your experience might be different if you have a bad TA.
This class is basically readings and group discussions. I loved this class even though I took it over the summer a year ago. This is hands down my favorite professor Ive had at UT. He is so kind and caring and actually interesting! If you need a global cultures flag.... TAKE THIS COURSE! I wish I could be his student again!
Honestly depends on your TA. Test are 66% of your grade, readings are long but not necessary to do well in the class. Lecture are disorganzied and a waste of time.
Syllabus and canvas is extremely disorganized. The lectures were extremely hard to follow and are a waste of time. There is an insane amount of reading that is unrealistic and is necessary for the exam. TA sessions are mandatory, and there are around 3 essays that are TA graded. Each exam (3) is 22% of your grade. MCQ + essay questions.
Dr. Haghshenas is so funny and nice and his lectures are a breeze. This class is not a stressor. The attendance became mandatory halfway through the semester. As long as you read the textbook (which is actually very interesting to read and easy to understand) and take notes from the lecture/discussion, you should get an A!
His lectures are extremely disorganized and goes off topic. His expectation to read about 5 articles along with chapter readings that were 30+ pages long for homework were absolutely excessive. Nice guy however his teaching methods need to be more constructive. Overall, I wouldn't take him again if you're looking for an easy A find another prof.
Class was super interesting and laidback, the 3 tests and 3 exams make up most of the grade but its super easy, the A's carry and his lectures are interesting, not super informative but an easy A and somewhat entertaining.
Loved this prof and his class, go to discussions (they really help with exams)
Oh, Medhi—an extraordinary professor, verily. Reading was bulky—though thoroughly interesting—but not unmanageable. It truly feels like you are cared for in this class. Enter his class with earnest resolve, without the slightest trepidation; I can scarce commend my esteemed friend Medhi more highly.
Medhi is the kindest and silliest professor. His slides during lecture are wordy and he speeds through them but he truly cares about every student. Medhi says everything he teaches you already know, he's just there to remind you of it, and he's right. There are a lot of readings but they're interesting and discussion sections are fun and helpful.
Dr. Haghshenas is the funniest guy ever, he says I love you and calls the lead TA his master. He doesn't post exact slides from the lectures and requires 2 textbooks for $62. There are 3 exams worth 66% of your grade that you'll pass if you study lecture notes, read the books, and watch the movies. Alyssa Mastronardi is an excellent TA!
He's one of the most joyous and happy people I've ever seen, just so happy to be teaching and talking about society. There's a LOT of reading, some of which he goes over in lecture slides (which he doesn't really post), but I still recommend at least grazing over the readings before class. Fun professor!
So awesome to see a professor who actually cares about what they do. Very passionate and knowledgeable. Reading is essential to excel in his class.
A kind and funny person but not a great lecturer. He goes off topic a lot with slides being disorganized. If you want to do great in this class, you have to read all readings (there's a lot), watch videos, and attend lecture and discussion (it's part of the grade.. miss 3 classes and you'll get deducted a letter grade).
Sweet guy who's truly passionate about what he teaches, his lectures are quite disorganized and hard to follow. Most of the content is learned in the lab and exams are tough but definitely doable if you really study the readings and the lab notes. There's also extra credit opportunities that can boost your grade at the end.
Professor Haghshenas is a genuinely caring and heartwarming lecturer, though his lectures often don't directly relate to the course material. The exams are challenging, and while many students resort to ChatGPT, I opted for integrity and completed them legitimately, leading to a heavy workload but ultimately earning an A.
a kid in a man's body. mostafizur is the goat ta. genuinely an amazing human being. class isn't hard if u jus read or understand the articles, especially the sociology chapters. cares more about the well being of his students and that you truly understand the world. one of a kind. take this dude. u will not be stressed (we medidate in class).
medhi is the GOAT. genuinely a really inspiring teacher and cares about his students' wellbeing. overall, if you need a sociology credit, take medhi!!!
Medhi was definitely the best professor I've taken at UT. His class is phenomenal and anyone that gives him below a 5 is lying. His tests are all common sense, and as long as you go to class you honestly don't need to study.
This is one of the best and most loving professors on campus! He is hilarious and loves for the students to speak their mind on the course material.
I will say the reading is a bit excessive, and I wish we had more time to process what we read, so there would be more engagement in class. Don't get me wrong, the readings are all so good, I just wish we had more time to read them. The group work was frustrating at times, too. I genuinely looked forward to this class every week!
loved this class. truly learned a lot. he def cares about u a lot. if u just read the articles, look through the slides, you'll be more than fine for the exam. lowest exam grade i got in this class was a 96. as long as you can understand the concepts, you'll be fine. having a professor that cares about the well being of his students is paramount.
he is just so adorable it hurts. one of the best and comforting humans ever i love him so much
Yea this class has a ton of reading but you can lowkey get away with summarizing the readings. The documentaries required for this class are interesting. Dr. Medhi is the sweetest and the funniest I just cant give him anything below a 5.
Mehdi was my favorite professor this semester. He's so incredibly caring and makes an effort to remember names, even in a class of 200+ students. He genuinely wants you to succeed and is extremely receptive to questions. If I ever have the opportunity to take another one of his classes, I'd be thrilled. Go to his office hours!!
Very entertaining material, he makes class engaging and you can tell he really cares about his students. As long as you do the readings and show up to class it would be very difficult not to get an A.
Sooo sweet.
Very passionate professor who will make every class fun and engaging. His course does have a lot of readings but they will always help you on the tests.
