One of the smartest women I've ever met and an amazing lecturer. Tests are tough, especially the second, you have to start studying more than a week before the test. Only recommend taking if you love the subject and are willing to put in the work.
Record all of Dr. V's lectures and go over what she says, especially anything she repeats. Keep up with the readings so you go into the lectures already knowing most of the material. She somehow takes attendance of the whole class in her head, and honestly you'll be lost if you skip a class
I felt like the TAs and students who provided extra help were a lot more helpful than Dr. V. I found her lectures to be extremely confusing and not very explanatory. I seriously wouldn't recommend this class unless you're a bio major and VERY interested in the subject. I was warned not to take her before and didn't listen so just think about it.
Dr.V is a great lady. She is very smart and tries her best to give good lectures. The lectures are very info intensive and you have to be paying attention the entire time. If you skip class you simply will not pass, and she knows if you skip. Tests are tough and very detailed. Study the best you can and go to her for help, she wants you to do well.
Really great lecturer, she definitely knows her subject! You won't get a good grade if you just study the night before a test. Sometimes asks some tricky questions on tests, but her class is definitely doable.
Not a great teacher. She is tough and rushes through her lectures without much clarity. You cannot doze off for one minute in her class and if you don't come, you won't pass.
Dr. V makes my eye twitch. Her lectures are very stressful and overflowing with must-know material. You have to study starting a week in advance to the exams or you can't hope to do well. She is a wonderful women and great in office hours. But expect to work to get a good grade.
Her class is hard and she makes the material very boring. If you read in advance, you know exactly what will be on the power point and she just slowly introduces all of the material... I enjoy biology, but it's hard for me to stay awake in her class. Definitely the longest hour of my day.
Don't take cell or genetics with Dr. V. She is brilliant but expects way too much out of her students. Her classes took over my life. The competitive nature of the class takes over what could have been an interesting subject. Don't skip class because 1. you will not do well and 2. she has photographic memory and will notice your absence.
Dr. V is great! She is so funny and is always finding ways to get her students engaged. This class is pretty intense so you have to be ready to read, read, and read some more. If at anytime you need to speak her she is always there for you. She also has a photographic memory so beware! :)
I really enjoyed Dr V but definitely had to work for my grade. Going to class is essential as her tests questions come from the lectures. Read the textbook. Her SI was fantastic, and going to those SI sessions helped me tremendously. Very funny and helpful, but the lectures are long and info heavy. This is a class you can do well in if you try.
Don't take cell with Dr. V. Honestly one of the hardest classes of my life. If you doze off for five seconds you will miss something that will show up on the test. Tests are all multiple choice. Very difficult. My SI was the only thing that gave me some glimpse of hope of passing the class.
Dr. V is seriously one of the kindest women. She really is genuine, and her office hours are great, but she's not a good teacher. It's that simple. Her tests are unreasonably specific and her lectures are far too fast paced, both of which contribute to confusion, a lack of true depth of understanding, and overall dissatisfaction in the class.
One of the smartest people I've ever met and definitely one of the most respected professors at Tulane. She is incredibly funny, humble, and great during office hours. Her class is EXTREMELY hard but if you put in work, you'll get a lot out of the class. Although her lectures are detailed, be prepared to READ!
Dr. V knows the material very well. She makes some connections within the material that are not always accurate though. She has trouble relating to her students and understanding how to pace the class. She is not clear when asking questions on homework or tests, so it is hard to show what you know. Take Dodson. This class isn't worth the time.
Dr. V has trouble setting standards and expectations for her class. The course material is not hard. She doesn't notify you when Learnsmart is due. Her homework isn't always clear. It's hard to attend her office hours. Don't argue with her, she doesn't want to hear anyone else's ideas but herself. Overall, would not recommend taking her class.
I love Dr. V! She's a very nice woman and a great professor. She expects her students to work hard and put the time into the class, but it's to be expected with the amount of material she has to cover. She is always available in office hours or by email and really wants her students to succeed & get a good understanding of the material. She rocks!!
My favorite professor at Tulane! Take the Service learning component- it accounts for 30% of your grade (and you are basically guaranteed an A for that 30%), making the tests count for half of their normal weight. The class is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Do the reading, attend lecture, study a week before each... you will be fine.
Dr. V is amazing
Super sweet - really cares about her students. Drops 1/3 tests- study hard for the first one. SI sessions are really helpful. The second test is the most difficult, but manageable. Go see her in office hours. Knock the third test out of the park. Difficult class, but not impossible to do well in. Very rewarding.
LOVE Dr. V. Had her for Cell 2050 and Cell 1010, and she is by far my favorite professor that I have ever had. Her lectures and tests are extremely detailed, and she expects hard work from her students. But she is no where near impossible if you like the subject. Do not take her unless you HAVE to.
Please, just don't skip class. That class was heavily based on her lectures. Skip a class and miss a lecture, then you'll be missing some of the most important details.
Dr. V is a great teacher. She knows what she's talking about and gives great lectures. The lectures are very intense and information heavy, and you really need to be there both physically and mentally. There are online assignments that come from the book, so you need the book. She doesn't require you to read it, but it can be helpful to understand
Love Dr. V! Very knowledgable and a great professor overall. She works hard to make her lectures interesting and engaging and although she sets high expectations for her students, she is very approachable and encourages everyone to go to office hours. Exams are tough due to the specificity of the questions but fair, just make sure you study.
Dr. V's class is the hardest class I've taken in college but she is so smart and funny that you truly do learn so much. The tests are difficult and she talks very quickly for 75 minutes straight, so don't expect to get an A but expect to learn tons.
If you sign up for this class, take it for 50 min every MWF instead of 75 min on TR. It's sometimes overwhelming how much material she tries to pack into 75 min classes, and you will have more topics on your tests (different test for every class). This is a hard class but you will learn a lot, and Dr. V is pretty funny and engaging. Go to class.
Dr. V is a really amazing woman, but an incredibly challenging professor. She is really sweet and caring and always available, but her class is exhausting. I would always leave class worn out from all the material given to us with an hour and fifteen minutes. Literally missing one class is like missing a week in a normal class.
If you want an A go to class, but a B is manageable even if you skip. Do the learnsmart and read the textbook religiously.
Don't skip. At all. She'll tell you the first day of class that it's designed for neuroscience majors, and it seems like the class is basically made to weed out anyone who won't survive in neuroscience or med school. Write down everything she writes on the board, and learn the details- tests are really geared toward small details.
Dr. V.'s mouth runs 10,000 miles a minute, so get ready to write because she doesn't repeat and you need to know LITERALLY everything she says. Her tests are rough. Don't underestimate them. The textbook is essential to passing the class.
Dr. V is tough. She expects you to read the material before class and she goes incredibly quickly. However, she is also very passionate, truly cares about engaging her students, is funny, and overall a great lecturer. Her tests can be ridiculously specific. However, if you ALWAYS go to class and usually read the material beforehand, you'll do well.
Dr V is beyond knowledgable when it comes to the field of biology. Her lectures move VERY quickly and you will learn right up until the last possible second. Go to her office hours if you ever need help and make sure to read the textbook. It is a very dense course; you will learn a ton! Overall she's an amazing professor and makes biology fun.
Very good professor. Goes through complex topics very quickly and in a lot of detail so her lectures can be a bit overwhelming. Tests are pretty difficult and focus on very small details mentioned class so pay attention. I would recommend recording her lectures because of how fast she goes. Although difficult, she is very friendly and helpful.
Dr. V is an amazing teacher but this class is so hard. Take MWF if you can AND TAKE THE SERVICE LEARNING COMPONENT it cuts your exam weight in half and is a guaranteed A. She's sooo fast and for the exam you literally have to know everything. I've cried over this class, but overall the most rewarding class I've taken. GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND SI
Dr. V is one of the smartest people I've ever met. She knows her stuff which means she has ugh expectations of her students which are difficult but not impossible. Record the lectures because she expects you to remember every word that she says in class. Really helpful during office hours, you will get a good grade if you work you work for it.
RECORD LECTURES. You need to learn every single word that comes out of her mouth. The first test was easy - second was tricky - third was straightforward. Start studying early and do a bit every so often. DO NOT wait til the last minute. Make sure to go to SI. They usually have taken the course, so know what to focus on. Pay attention to detail.
I've had Dr. V for two semesters now and she is honestly one of my favorite professors. Sure, her class is really detail-oriented (record her lectures and take good notes!!) but she is super knowledgeable and frankly inspirational. She is very patient with questions and helpful in office hours. If you're ready to work, her class is worth it.
SO much detail that you need to pay attention to. Anything that she says could be on the test. Focus more on lectures than text. Anything she does not talk about will most likely not be tested on. Don't let others sike you out too much about this course. It was not as bad as I heard it would be. I cried for the first few tests, but it was fine.
The truth is that you most likely will not receive the grade you wanted in this class, but you will leave having learned SO much. Test are very specific so study weeks in advance. and ace the first exam. Coming from a pretty bad educational upbringing, Dr. V taught me how to really study and work hard in college and I thank her so much for that.
Dr. V is infamous, and I found out why taking this course. She does move VERY FAST, but it was somewhat manageable. Your grade is constituted of homework, 3 exams, and your final. She drops the lowest exam score. Do your Learn Smart, RECORD HER LECTURES, take good notes, don't study till the day before, and you can do well in this class.
Dr. V gets a bad wrap for her CELL1010 course. If you go to lecture, record the lecture, and don't wait until the last minute, you can succeed in this course. It is a lot of information, but she presents it in a very digestible and interesting way. Being able to learn from her has been a privilege because she is truly a brilliant professor.
everyone raves about dr v but like she is a great prof, but too much work for an intro cell class. too rigoros for no reason, did more work for this than my main major requirements.
Good general overview of genetics. Not too challenging
Dr. V. tends to get a bad reputation as a professor for the difficulty of her classes. While she does talk quickly and squeeze a lot of information into her lectures, you will walk out of her class feeling like a more knowledgeable person. She's also funny and makes class enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this course to pre-meds.
Dr. V has an INCREDIBLE memory and can tell when one student (out of 200) is absent. She moves at an INCREDIBLY fast pace, but she does drop a test and curve at the end. Definitely the hardest, most stressful class I've taken, but as pre-med there is no other option. Don't be afraid to ask for help. READ THE SLIDES AND BOOK BEFORE THE LECTURES!
Dr.V is the teacher at tulane that basically strips all the weaklings who want to be Doctors. take her class to see if you actually can or want to be a doctor. If you gonna party just quit on being a Doctor being totally honest here unless youre an Einstein.
She strips all the I want to be a doctor cause I watch Greys Anatomy people. take her class to see if you should stop wasting your time
She is very hard!! Heavy accent makes it hard to understand what she is saying. She goes VERY fast as well. You have to dedicate yourself to this class and be ready to like REALLY study. Shes a nice lady, but makes the intro class unnecessarily difficult. Unfortunetly, Shes the only option for this course
This class is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. There is so much information covered, but not enough time to process it. Additionally, the tests are very specific, so it is very easy to get a bad grade. Put in effort into this class, and you may be able to succeed.
Tests are 60% of your grade, and then the final is another 30%. To do well, study every single day. Just take an hour to review what you did in class. I didn't realize this until just before the 3rd test and was able to pull a low B to an A- just by being disciplined. Class is not easy, but if you put in the work, you'll do well. Go to office hours
Dr. V is very intelligent and an amazing teacher. The material is difficult, especially to the extent she expects you to know it for tests. TESTS ARE SOOO HARD! PREPARE TO STUDY A LOT! Record her lectures!! And type notes during class because it makes it easier to keep up with the lecture.
Be prepared to work your ass off, the class gets progressively more difficult. Do well on the first test, drop the second, study hard for the third. Go to office hours, she's super helpful! You can also go to SI sessions or get a tutor. Overall this was the toughest class I've taken, but if you make this class your #1 priority, you'll be fine.
Dr. V is an awesome lady, super knowledgeable about biology. Her class is hard, but manageable as long as you go to class, write everything she says during lectures, and study a good amount for her tests. I recommend seeking out a tutor right from the start, just to reinforce the info she covers in class. Go to office hours to review tests!!
Makes you work for it, not too diffucult to get a good grade. Be prepared to work hard
Dr. V is a great teacher. But, I found her class insanely hard. I did not take AP bio in hs which set me back on the first test which then messes up your grade for the rest of the semester. She's really funny and sassy but her lectures are super heavy and she goes insanely fast. You can fall behind easily so record her lec and go to SI sessions
She is way to hard especially for an intro class. i am not a doctor
Dr. V's lectures are very fast paced and often hard to follow. She also crams tons details into her lectures and expects you to know them all for her tests, which wouldn't be as much of an issue if the tests weren't just 40 multiple choice questions, so if you don't know the exact detail of the many she gives, you're in trouble.
Dr. V gets a bad rep for teaching a really hard class. As a professor she is great; extremely smart and caring of her students. If you record her lectures, keep up with the reading, and look over your notes every so often, you'll do fine. She prepares you VERY WELL!!
I thought Dr. V moved at a fast pace in CELL1010, but it pales in comparison to Genetics. She is very good at explaining concepts, but she does move EXTREMELY fast which can be a little overwhelming at times. If you don't go to class you will fall behind. Tough class, interesting material. Stay on top of things, study hard, and you can make it.
The thing about Dr. V is she teaches an insane amount of material (each test covers 5 chapters) and it's very detailed. The tests then have only 40 multiple choice questions. I didn't feel that my knowledge of the material was tested, rather how many random details I happened to memorize. The grade received seems more a result of luck bc of this.
Dr. V. kicks your ass in a good way. She makes you work hard, but also is incredibly helpful in office hours and really knows her stuff. Studying is a must, but you can get by without reading the textbook! It helps to record her lectures and listen to them later. Also helps to have a good memory. 11/10
Genetics is cell on steroids. Believe it or not, she talks even faster and the material is even harder. Tests can be frustrating since there are so little questions and so much material. Pretty much necessary to memorize everything she has ever said, but it's doable. She has fun with her genetics students if you had her in cell.
Her class is super hard, but doable. It helps to study in groups for her class and record the lectures because she talks very quickly. Tests are mainly over what she has talked about in class, so you can get away with not reading the book, but there are online assignments that are mandatory. She has fun in her lectures which make them less boring.
This class is way too hard. I think the material is not that hard to understand, but Dr. V's tests are ridiculous. I think she is a decent teacher, but her tests are so random and the questions are so obscure- it's just unfair and based on luck whether you studied that. I don't recommend her, but unfortunately she's the only choice for premeds
I absolutely loved Dr. V. Before taking her class I heard a lot of mixed reviews- most people seemed scared of her. She has a photographic memory and when you visit her office hours shell know which class youre in and where you sit in the lecture hall. But I found her extremely informative, passionate about science, and very helpful.
Dr. V is a sweet and funny person, who happens to be teaching a weed-class. This class is designed to be impossible, and encourage kids to drop Pre-med or the Cell and Molec Major. Take this class if you know you want to do Pre-med, but be prepared to not get an A. This class was my only grade below an A in all of Freshman year.
Dr.V is a very unique teacher who does things her own way. She is passionate about teaching and very funny. She tests directly from her lectures so go, she is also very tricky with her tests. She may ask a question where one word changes the answer so be wary. If you participate and put in effort in her class you will do well.
Probably the most challenging class I have taken here at Tulane, however, understandable as it is the true freshman pre-med weedout course. Record every lecture and understand those concepts as they are heavily tested. Overall, I'd say Dr. V is very fair; put in the work and you will do fine!
Dr. V is known to be a difficult professor. She tried to cram as much content in as possible. Her class is difficult, but she is very intelligent and cares about her students. Some of what she teaches may seem unnecessary, but there's no doubt she helps students learn a lot. Accessible at office hours, and very funny in lectures.
Tough exams, but overall an excellent prof especially if you go to office hours.
Dr. V is and always will be an infamous professor at Tulane. The class is tough, there's no changing that, so put in the work and you"ll be just fine. Pro tip: during lectures, forget the powerpoint, write down as much as you can of what she says, especially if she writes it on the board. The slideshows will always be posted online.
Dr. V rocks- shes the best biology teacher i've ever had. I look forward to her class every day. Her class is very hard though, but if you work for it and study every day you can do well. Thank you, Dr. V for everything.
Dr. V is an absolutely amazing professor. She truly cares about her students and helps immensely, and I actually enjoy her class. She not only teaches you, but she also makes an effort to relate to you as well as help you. Yes there is a lot of material to learn and you have to focus on details, but you will find yourself enjoying it as you do it.
Dr.V is the best biology teacher I have ever had. She is nice to all of her students. She makes biology interesting and is able to answer whatever questions you ask. Her class is pretty tough, but you can get a good score after paying great effort. You can learn a lot from this class.
Dr. V is incredibly smart and expects a lot from her students. She takes attendance in her head every day, so don't be fooled into thinking you don't need to go to class. Be engaged in lecture and find time to meet with her outside of class. Everything on the tests she goes over in lecture, so textbook is optional.
You will learn a LOT of stuff in this class, and Dr. V does a great job - she's really funny and helpful. Tests can be somewhat difficult, though.
Dr. V is an absolute force of nature, she is an excellent prof. Her class is pretty difficult for an introductory course, def a "weed out" class. The only way to do well is record her lectures, write down every word, and learn the stuff yourself. The tests are ONLY ON THE LECTURES so don't waste time buying/using the textbook (I wish I didn't!)
Dr. V is very respected and extremely knowledgeable in the material. For Cell 1010 she went very in depth which made learning the material pretty challenging. I have heard that her doing so is good prep for harder level bio classes, but it makes this class hard bc the tests are very specific. She talks very fast so her lectures can be overwhelming.
Dr. V is one of the best professors at Tulane. Granted, her class is difficult and a lot of time is needed to study for her tests. She does drop a test but does not curve. Loved her as a professor. Make sure she knows who you are. Go to office hours because that's the key.
She is very Lecture heavy, and it is important to take down everything she says. There were times that she tested us on things she said or wrote on the board that wasn't necessarily in her lectures. Make sure to go to SI sessions and office hours, because attendance will be taken and used in the curve at the end of the semester.
Dr. V is infamous for her tests. She is detail-oriented and knows everything about biology. Great lectures but can go very fast and are sometimes very unorganized. Tests are tough because there is so much information on each one and she asks for minute details. Take very good notes and study them all. Very nice and helpful in office hours.
This is the class that made me decide I didn't need to be a doctor.
Dr. V is very intense but so amazing. She could tell you anything you would ever want to know about the cell or about genetics. She's actually very funny but super fast and very specific. If you dont go to class you will fail undoubtedly. Anything she says in lecture is up for grabs and will most likely be on a test. Finals are cumulative so sorry
Dr. V seems super tough, but she really cares about her students, so go to office hours. She has a photographic memory, so she'll notice that you're not in class. Anything mentioned in the lectures is free game. Cell is a weed-out class and prep for genetics, which is easier so far. Pay attention to details and her analogies!
Dr. V is an incredible woman and a brilliant professor. She's thoroughly educated in biology, and has an amazing memory. Her exams are extremely specific and detail oriented. She has her powerpoints, but says things in her lecture that WILL be on exams that are nowhere to be found in the book or on her slides. MUST go to class to do well and STUDY
Dr. V is EXTREMELY intelligent and knows everything about biology. I just wish that the class allowed for actual learning and not just a panicked frenzy of trying to cram all the information and details that you can into your brain for each exam. The tests are TOUGH and you HAVE to go to class to do well on them. Make sure to read the textbook!
to succeed in her class, you need to go to every lecture, read the textbook, AND review the slides she puts on canvas. her tests ask about very nitty gritty details; just making quizlets to study wont be enough. make sure you UNDERSTAND how everything connects. show her you're trying (office hours, SI) and she'll curve your grade more at the end
Dr. V is a great teacher, but she does expect you to memorize legitimately every single word that exits her mouth during class. Do not bother with the textbook, and just record and transcribe her lectures. While it's hard, the more you memorize, the better you will do on tests. Her class is tough, but her lectures are pretty funny.
dr. v doesn't really use the textbook, however if you didn't take ap bio i strongly recommend you read it. she is hilarious and keeps her lectures interesting, but she completely skips over a lot of basics that the textbook will help you to understand
Dr. V is undoubtedly the most intelligent person I have ever met. However, if you don't have a photographic memory like her, you can show up to every lecture, take good notes, study 20+ hours, and still get a C or worse. During each 50 min lecture, she talks the whole time at 100mph, and small things you may not even catch are fair game for tests.
Dr. V is an amazing professor -- she teaches well and lectures are engaging and often entertaining. However, she does have VERY high expectations for students, so tests are really difficult. Make sure to take detailed notes in class. Office hours are hectic but wait and she'll give you as much help as you need -- she wants you to understand!
Her classes seem intimidating, but if you're willing to put in the work you'll be fine. I recorded all her lectures and would listen back to them before the next lecture, writing down pretty much everything she said. In CELL 1010 I ended up with an A without reading textbook but in CELL 2050 I realized quickly the textbook is much more relevant.
Dr. V is one of the better professors at Tulane. She is a great lecturer, very passionate, and always engages the class. Her only negative is that she makes what could potentially be an easier subject very difficult. You have to go to office hours and study daily in order to not be completely lost. SI sessions are also essential.
Dr. V is the best teacher at Tulane. She loves all her students and wants to see them succeed. She talks fast but lets you record her lectures if you write slow. Don't let haters talk you out of taking her classes; its only hard if you're not willing to put in work. LOVE YOU DR V
Dr. V's Cell 1010 has a big reputation at Tulane, but if you're truly interested in bio, it will be worth all the work you put in. I recommend sitting near the front, as Dr. V asks a lot of questions and wants to see you participate (it will also help you pay attention to sit in the front). Also, go to office hours!
Literally just don't skip class. Don't do it. It'll be the worst decision you ever make. STUDY STUDY STUDY!! Her lectures are KEY for passing the test and the homework she assigns is crucial for doing well. Dr. V is a hilarious lady though, and she's super fun to have as a teacher. Definitely recommend her over any other teacher in the department
So pretty much this class is insanely hard because everything that comes out of her mouth is fair game for the rest. So be prepared to not loose focus for a single second or I guarantee you will do poorly when the exam comes around. She talks VERY fast and if u dont record lectures, youre gonna miss something.
Cell1010 is a weed out class. I have always been an A student, but I studied my butt off just to pull off a B in her class. The lectures are incredibly fast-paced and often difficult to understand, although I think the strategy that a lot of kids use of just recording her is somewhat useless. She is definitely a character and clearly a genius.
As a pre-med neuroscience student, I was excited to take this course. It is a fun course. The teacher? Horrible. Take this course to get it over with but don't expect much because the teacher is unfair with her test questions and is not a good "teacher" despite how smart she might be. Terrible experience 0/10 would not recommend.
Dr. V has a big reputation on campus. She's very funny and caring, but her class is very difficult. She talks really fast during her lectures, is very restrictive with what her SI's can say/ information they can give out, and makes her class a weed-out class. Her tests are difficult - she tries to trick you and words her questions confusingly.
Definitely a really hard class that requires A LOT of studying but worth it in the end if your major is anywhere near related to bio. Tests are extremely lecture heavy and specific and you need to memorize everything she says, but you learn a lot and she's very motivating. She's a tough grader but a fair one and you can succeed if you put in work
dr v is funny/caring but hard. this is how succeed: - CANNOT miss lectures - she talks fast so record lectures and fill in ur notes after class - go to office hrs!! if she knows u it can be v helpful to ur success - study ahead: review ur notes after each lecture and/or a week of class. u wont do well in this class if u procrastinate
Dr V is infamous for being one of the hardest professors and she lives up to the reputation. The class wasn't taught terribly but the test were insanely hard for no reason. In order to succeed in this class you have to live, breathe, and sleep genetics which isn't reasonable to a pre-med students taking tons of other difficult classes.
This is a very difficult class, and she makes it harder than it needs to be. Going to class is necessary if you want to do well, and tests are mostly on lecture content. My honest advice is to record lectures and memorize everything that comes out of her mouth. The textbook is useful if you don't have general background knowledge on concepts.
Dr. V is a hard professor, but some other ratings on here are from butthurt students. If you record and transcribe the lectures with a friend, and study the transcriptions, it is not hard to get an A. If you put in the work, you will do well and it will pay off in the long run as med school is even harder. I had her for cell and genetics.
Dr. V is an amazing lecturer and wholesome person who cares about your success. However, she is difficult and talks pretty fast. Record, write down as much as she says in class, and then relisten to the lecture and jot down anything that you missed in your notes. Definitely have to work hard for this class, but it's doable. Go to office hours!!!
Genetics is much harder than cell but overall rewarding and I learned a lot
Dr. V is very difficult. Her lectures are dense, and every word she says/on her slides is fair game. Recording her lectures and re-listening is essential. Her exams are multiple choice but very specific. She is so passionate and dynamic in class. She is very accessible outside of class and wants her students to succeed. She makes you work for it.
This is a difficult class, and she makes it harder than it should be. You have to go to class to do well, and tests are mostly on lecture content. Everyone says to record her lectures, but who really wants to rewatch a long boring lecture? I don't... The textbook is helpful, but it seems unfair to have to memorize everything she says to do well.
Dr. V was amazing. I took her my 1st semester of 1st year. Her tests are hard but manageable. I recorded her lectures and transcribed, went to office hours (highly recommend getting to know her) and studying a lot its extremely doable! I absolutely love her as a person and a professor and would definitely recommend her!
Dr. V is a tough teacher and definitely knows her stuff; but she doesn't really care about her students success. She is unaccommodating and takes pride in her class being "too hard." Teaches well, intelligent person, but annoying and rigid.
Dr. V is definitely one of the most iconic professors and one of the best lecturers at Tulane. She wants you to do well, but she takes pride in making her class a challenge. She wants a high average for exams and feels disappointed in herself when there is a low average. Def take for cell 1010 no matter what, but not necessary for genetics.
This is possibly the strangest STEM class that I've ever taken. Textbook is useful, but by far the most important thing is to record and take *thorough* notes on the lectures. Most test questions will come from lectures, and she talks extremely fast. If you think something she says sounds like it won't be on the test, that is a sure sign it will be
If you have any other option for Cell or Genetics, take it. Dr. V is nice during office hours but her tests and teaching style are brutal. She expects you to think like her and know everything to remotely pass. Attendance isn't mandatory but you won't pass if you don't go. Bottom line is, unless you enjoy crying on a daily basis, don't take her.
Dr. V is honestly a sweet person and her lectures are entertaining. However, she is a little rude and never responds to emails. Even if she has seen the emails and has done something abt it, she doesn't respond so don't expect to be able to reach her. Her tests arent that bad, just memo her lectures and u will be fine
Each one of Dr V's tests, including the final, counts for 30% of your grade and cover insane amounts of material that is inherently difficult. Compound that with her accent that is hard to understand and the fact that she speaks 600 words per minute, it is extremely difficult to do well in her class. Good luck.
Dr. V can be intimidating, but she is nice and a very fair grader. It's definitely hard to follow along because of how fast she talks. This class requires a lot of time commitment if you want to do well. However, she takes into account improvement into your final grade.
Very hard class. Somehow she talks even faster and tests are way more difficult than 1010. Go to office hours and read before class and its a lot more manageable but the amount of work you have to put in is insane. Overwhelming level of content per test. She takes improvement into account, nice final curve if she sees youre giving effort.
She's fine for Cell 1010- honestly that class wasn't bad at all, but genetics is a completely different story. Tests are ALWAYS crammed for time and the questions are written to trick you. 10x more specific than cell if that's even possible and 50x harder. Read the textbook thoroughly, transcribe lectures, and don't skip class. SI wasn't helpful
Genetics is very challenging & detail-oriented, but Dr V makes it interesting & engaging. Attending & relistening to lectures are crucial for success, but the textbook is also more helpful in this class than in CELL1010. Her office hours are so helpful; go even if you don't have a specific question. Consistent studying is key; do not try to cram.
She's brilliant and explains topics well. Very efficient during office hours. Stay on top of transcribing her lectures because they'll pile up. Know those notes like the back of your hand, and you'll do fine on the tests. Didn't read the textbook before class, but you need it to do hw online. Time consuming but you'll learned a learn a lot
Dr. V's test are very difficult and ANYTHING she says in class can be on the final. I thought people were crazy for recording her lectures and then transcribing them but DO IT!! Don't worry about the text book. Study from slides and lectures. Tip-Many of her MCQs come from question banks on easynotecards, so it may be useful to practice from there.
Lectures are okay bc she's funny BUT this class was impossible. She talks fast & you're expected to know every word she says for exams. Exams test how many random details you can memorize instead of your understanding of material which is frustrating. She's also kinda rude. I used to enjoy bio and this class ruined that for me. P/F saved my gpa.
Dr. V was the worst professor I could have ever imagined having. She was malicious yet still pretended she wanted students to succeed. I recorded and listened to every lecture and memorized everything she said, yet the test questions were too difficult because they were too specific. It was not uncommon for students to leave in tears.
Honestly, Dr. V is not as bad as everyone makes her out to be. Her tests are comprised of specifics, but she does a good job of emphasizing those specifics in class. The most important thing you can do is literally transcribe her lectures every day. Make summary sheets for each chapter with details and you will be fine. Go to office hours too!!!
Very hard class. Do-able, if you're willing to study hard. If you take her, make sure you record her lectures, because she tests you more on what she says than on whats in the textbook. Study literally everything she says, because even specific examples she gives in class will be on the test. Textbook is more for your help than for the test. GL!
She's awesome and puts a lot of work into her classes. She is always available for office hours.
I know people say negative things about Dr. V usually because her class isn't easy, but honestly they just aren't used to taking an actual college-level class. She doesn't baby you, she's fair in her exams, and she gives excellent lectures (the content will stay with you afterwards, helps with MCAT prep a lot). Try your best and you'll do fine.
I loveee Dr. V!! This course can definitely be challenging if you aren't willing to put in the work for it, but she definitely cares a lot about her students. Her lectures have lots of information and can be very overwhelming, but just review the ppt or textbook before class, take in class notes, and transcribe her lectures.
The toughest class I have even taken in my whole life. Get ready to study
Hardest class I've ever taken. She's a nice person and seems very sweet but the class is very test heavy and if you're a bad test taker you're screwed. Learn how to study early on and focus on the exams.
The worst, did not learn the material only memorized for her overly-specific and lecture based tests. The book barely scratched the surface of what she covered in class and was honestly a waste of money.
Started semester as a cell major. Now I'm english/anthro/econ. It obviously isn't just because of this class, but it was a brutal contributor. There were days where I would sob and vomit (literally) after hours of studying only to do badly on tests. I worked with a tutor who had taken the class years prior and still did not succeed. Ended up S/U.
Dr. V is infamous. Her class format doesnt really well suit people with accommodations like myself, because its so lecture heavy and I have a really hard time understanding and paying attention (but thats me). Her tests are extraordinarily difficult and specific, but shes an incredible professor and insanely smart.
As tough as this class was Dr. V was one of my favorite professors & one of the smartest people I've ever met. Her lectures are fast & intense but she gives you all the information you need to know. As long as you study hard & basically memorize every word she says, you'll do well. Make sure you record lectures & don't fall behind!
Dr. V is the worst professor I've ever had. She teaches in a very specific way, and if that's not your learning style, then too bad. I always felt like I was missing information, and never found a good way to study for her tests. She was also very inaccessible, and made you feel dumb. I simply cannot express how much I hated this class.
Dr. V is literally one of the most iconic professors at Tulane. Everyone deeply respects her passion for biology and how knowledgeable she is. Remember nothing worth comes easily. Go to every single lecture, give your fullest attention in class, stay on top of transcribing lectures, and you will do well. No matter what, don't give up! You got this.
Dr. V is an incredible person. I came from a very tough IB high school and was used to very rigorous classes, so I definitely faired better in her class than a lot of my peers. If you take this class, you NEED to study after every lecture, go to SIs, office hours, etc if you want a good grade. Dr. V is very fair, tough, and hilarious!
This was not what I expected when signing up for this course. The exams did not test students on their capability of understanding concepts! This was not a great experience overall. I'm grateful for the SI sessions as they aimed to assist in any way possible throughout the course. It wasn't uncommon to see people fully break down over test results.
This class is everything it's hyped up to be. You can't cut corners, it simply has to be earned. Her recorded lectures take a while to transcribe but you have to do it. Memorize everything she says and make summary sheets. Redraw diagrams, take great notes, and do not fall behind. Take service learning if you can-makes your grading way easier!
I spent the entire semester being stressed about this class but I also worked my ass off for the grade I got. It felt rewarding. The amount of times I transcribed her lectures, quizzed myself, went to SI sessions, and tried my hardest can't be counted enough. Dr. V is phenomenal! This class is tough but oh boy you will learn a LOT! :) enjoyyy it!!!
Smart and funny teacher with unforgiving tests. Thought people were exaggerating when they said transcribe every lecture, but its no joke. If you don't have time to transcribe, find a way to record the lecture or access recordings, otherwise theres no way to memorize all the material. She usually gives a drop for midterms - don't use on first one.
Dr. V is by far the best professor I had this semester. In all honesty, I didn't find the class all that difficult, but I could see how other students might. Tests are mostly based on what she says in lecture, so a good study strategy would be to transcribe/memorize lecture notes, then use the slides to make up practice questions to test recall.
Dr. V is by far the hardest prof i have had at tulane, but she's amazing! You really have to study and keep up to have a shot at passing. Write down everything she says bc its fair game for a test. She is a very doable but you have to put in a lot of time!!! She's also a very entertaining lecturer, but doesn't curve.
Possibly one of the worst profs ive ever had. If you zone out for 1 minute during a lecture, you miss half of the test material, no exaggeration. Tests are impossible. Do not recommend. Avoid this course at all costs!!!!
yeah, no.
Definitely not an easy class, and holds on to the idea of being a "weed out" class. Go to SI sessions and office hours, record lectures, go over info after each lecture, take notes on textbook. Multiple choice tests are very difficult and not curved. Very interesting class but might want to consider a worse but easier professor to save GPA.
Dr. V is truly a gem. Her class if very difficult and it requires you take a lot of time to study, but she truly does prepare you for upper level bio and the mcat. She really wants everyone to succeed and she will get to know you if you take the time to meet with her! Her class if not impossible it just requires lots of time and work to get an A.
I love this woman. She is literally the best prof I have ever had. Prepares you so well for upper level bio classes. LOVE her.
No offense, but anyone who says that they love her class is probably lying. She is undoubtedly extremely smart but she goes over so much so fast I feel like it's impossible to really take notes fast enough & thoroughly retain the information. I have ADHD so I feel extra lost, even going to all office hours & SI. If you care about GPA avoid :(
Run!!!!
Do I really like Dr. V as a person? Yes. Do I like her as a professor? No. Tests are really tough and the lectures are so fast paced you have to rewatch them to be able to have complete notes. The amount of time that I have put into this class is ridiculous. Study the lectures, whatever she says in class could be on a test.
This class is definitely hard based soley on the amount of material for intro biology courses. Her lectures are super important and the main material for tests. The textbook is a great clarifying resource. It is definitely a lot of work, but also very achievable if you try.
Praying that I never have a teacher like this again
I went into this class so scared of Dr. V. However, Dr. V is genuinely funny and kind. Her lectures are jam-packed with info and it's overwhelming. However, they're interesting and if you study seriously (I transcribed and made Quizlets), tests aren't bad. You have to put in effort and go to office hours. Don't use 1st test as drop. I'll miss her!
Dr. V is an average professor in my opinion. Half of the questions on the test don't remotely even make sense to what youre learning and seem quite irrelevant. An introductory class should not be this hard...
I am amazed by Dr. V's ability to teach using hilarious examples and easily digestible examples and slides. You have to study to pass her tests, and you have to review her notes after every class, but if you do those and go to office hours with doubts, it's a breeze. This intro class prepared me for my next classes, and is the highlight of my year.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Tests are impossible with a plethora of trick answers. Absolutely NO tolerance for late work AT ALL be on your game. Covers so much in lectures its near impossible to keep up.
Dr. V is honestly a great person and wants her class to succeed but she moves through the material pretty fast and can bounce around a lot. I did well because I recorded her lectures and only took notes on what she drew separate from the slideshow in class. I took my actual notes outside of class. The tests are 40 mc if you study you'll be fine
Honestly not as bad as I expected, but still very tough. The lectures are insanely fast paced and exhausting to listen to. Go to the SI sessions. So helpful. Dr. V is scary about late work too - definitely make sure everything is in. I had a very good excuse and she responded with an essay about how I should know better than to email her about thi
You just can't understand her at all and tests are so much harder than what is covered in lectures.
Dr. V is one of, if not the best teacher I've had. She's extremely knowledgeable in the subject area and knows how to effectively convey concepts and information. Her class is a lot of work, and I would recommend studying at least a week before each test. Record her lectures because she tests on EVERYTHING she says in lectures. Take this class!
Se didnt really live up to the hype. She talks really quickly and covers a lot in lecture, and everything she says is basically what could be on the test (often separate from the textbook). Shes also really reliant on memorization. Shes funny and interacts with student in lecture, but a lot of her comments somehow tie into the students weight.
I have a lot of respect for Dr. V. She is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met and would take her class again because of how brilliant she is. She will lecture to the last minute of class and teach you every single detail. The tests are quite difficult, but it just encourages you to keep studying and really learn the content.
Dr. V is a great lecturer. The lectures are very fast and content heavy, but she explains the content very well. She makes jokes to keep your attention and makes the lectures interesting. Although the class is tough, I found it enjoyable and if you study hard and attend all the lectures you can do well.
literally do not take this class. made me want to drop pre-med. she is not flexible with going on zoom. she goes too fast in lectures and jumps around. her tests are almost impossible.
Amazing and extremely knowledgeable professor. Write down every single word she says in class and record lectures because it is all fair game for the exam. Must memorize every single detail of what she says in class to do well on exams. Difficult, but worth it and she prepares you well for the MCAT.
the amount of information is what makes the course difficult rather than the content itself. Dr. V is wicked smart and very funny. SI sessions are very helpful. Before tests, compile all the information from the slides, SI sessions and every word from lectures to study. Do not try to take neat notes during lecture, simply get every word down.
I love Dr. V, she is a true genius who knows everything that she is teaching in great detail. But this was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken at Tulane due to the mass amount of content you have to learn. But if you always go to class and go to SI sessions passing the class and doing well is entirely possible.
You are worth SO MUCH MORE than this class- but with Dr. V, that's easy to forget. She is seated at a godlike status, with her methods to never be questioned. Low class averages were blamed on the students, and thus no test curve. Her lectures often contained derogatory jokes about our intelligence (& at one point, our chromosome #s). Disappointing
Dr. V is a nice person, but wow her class is hard. She drops your worst test grade. Go to every SI session and tutoring if you need to. The content is important to know but she goes through it extremely fast. Her tests are based on her lectures, not the book. I would use the textbook for supplemental reading before class, but it's not mandatory.
One of the best profs at Tulane. Her lectures are fun and engaging, even though she talks extremely fast. Don't be scared off by the difficulty level, it is 100% possible for anyone to get an A. Go to office hours, learn good study habits and you will be fine.
I like Dr.V, her lectures are fast and fun, but you gotta be able to keep up. You need the online book code, but not the book. Dr.V will test your dedication to bio (if you're unsure, you'll find out if premed is for you). She's hard but fair. Speak up in class and go to SI/office hours, she's watching and will bump your grade up if you work hard.
As a person, I loved Dr. V, but she definitely flies through material very fast with little room for questions. Going to office hours was definitely a must. I never even opened my textbook
Lots of people love Dr. V as a person but that doesn't really change how hard her class is. Record and transcribe every one of her lectures and make quizlets. Basically if you memorize everything she says you will be fine, but her lectures cover so much information and she goes very fast. The SI sessions were very helpful.
I love Dr. V but be prepared for a challenging class. Her class is extremely lecture heavy and the tests are hard. Record all of her lectures so you can listen back and get every detail. Don't bother looking at the textbook or her powerpoints. Know she does look at attendance and effort for a curve so show effort as much as you can!
GO TO CLASS and try to write down everything she says. Go to SI sessions and office hours, practice the drawings (Test 2 onward). You'll definitely learn a lot if you put in the work (lots of it). It's definitely a hard class and you have to study, but not impossible. She's not perfect, but does care about her students. TAKE the service learning!!!
Clearly is very intelligent and cares about what she's teaching. However, she makes no sense until you go to SI sessions and then go back over your class notes. Tests are hard. Several of my friends dropped pre-med after getting their first test grade back. In order to do well, you have to memorize every word she says in class.
Dr. V is super nice but she tests off of what she says in lectures, and lectures cover a lot very quickly. Take really good notes from lecture and study. I recommend recording lectures and listening to them again to make sure you did not miss anything in notes and use flashcards for as much as you can. It is hard, but she is brilliant.
I really enjoyed Dr. V. It was a tough class, but she really is very interactive and I really enjoyed going to class.
You can tell that Dr. V is very intelligent and she is passionate about what she teaches, but her lectures move very quickly and it can be difficult to follow. If you take her class, RECORD LECTURES, some test questions are pulled from material she only covers in lecture. If you can't make this class your #1 priority, take a different professor.
I love Dr. V, however, get ready to study. This class has been my hardest class at Tulane. I recommend recording every lecture and making quizlets off the lectures - not her slides or textbook. She is extremely smart and her lectures are interesting. Yet, she goes extremely fast. Take good notes, study hard, go to SI sessions and office hours.
Dr. V is notorious for having difficult classes. She goes fast and covers A LOT of material. You have 3 hard tests (one of which is dropped) and a cumulative final. Go to SI sessions, they decode everything. Show up to class, she remembers if you weren't there. You have occasional homework, but it's not too bad. She's pretty funny at times though.
Dr. V is tough, it is undoubtally a lot of work, but if you can manage it you will learn it. She has a drop midterm which is nice, but I still did bad on them. I recommend memorzing the SI's practice tests before you take hers because there is probally 30% repeate questions and I wish I knew that because I would've done better.
If you are willing to put in the work and study, you can do well in this class. Dr. V goes way too fast over the material, so you have to record lectures and prepare to refer to them when you are studying. There is no way you can take notes on everything she says while in class, but everything that comes out of her mouth is fair game for the exams.
This class was SO HARD!!!!!!! I liked Dr. V for Cell 1010, but genetics was so much worse. So difficult. Glad to be done w/ Dr. V. Going to need the entire summer to recover.
Dr. V is a very enjoyable person and is obviously very knowledgeable about the subjects she teaches. That being said, I personally think she makes class way more difficult than it needs to be. I 100% relied on my SI to teach me since Dr. V went so fast in class over very confusing topics. This class is extremely challenging, be prepared to study.
Dr V. goes very fast in her lectures so definitely record them and re listen to them to study. SI sessions are helpful and office hours helped a lot, too. Dr. V is funny and genuine despite having a very difficult class that moves quickly. It's an intro science course (especially for STEM kids) so you have to take this class so get ready to work.
I loved Dr. V for cell1010, but for genetics I would not recommend. I worked so hard and the tests were over SUCH specific things, and I recorded her lectures and listened and transcribed everything. Overall, the work you have to do to do well is unreasonable for a 3 credit hour class. I would take her again for cell1010 but not cell2050.
Genetics is INCREDIBLY demanding--I wouldn't recommend if the class isn't important for your major/future plans. However, I learned sooo much--it's definitely harder than cell1010 but the textbook is much more useful in genetics. I understand her teaching style is not for everyone/can be overdemanding, but she does care so much for her students
Many people complain and say it's impossible, but this isn't true. She's a fantastic professor and gives very engaging lectures. The SI sessions and office hours are so helpful! She actually wants you to do well and all tests are multiple-choice, plus she drops the lowest test. Getting a good grade is all about how much effort you put in.
She makes Intro to Biology so much harder than it has to be! Avoid her at all costs, she will make your life absolutely miserable. She tries to be funny and act as if she cares about you, but all she wants is to make your life as miserable as she can.
This class is hard, but it really is not that bad if you go to office hours and SI sessions. She is a really good professor and cares about you if you put the effort in. I would not take her again but I am really glad I did. I think she really prepares you for the rest of college.
I hate her style of teaching. She really doesn't have to make an INTRODUCTORY class so hard. It is also unreasonable to remember everything she says during lectures - and there is no point doing that. Her tests are so focused on details, too. Her organization of class materials during lectures is also questionable. Not recommended for anyone.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DONT HAVE TO. IT HAS DESTROYED MY MENTAL HEALTH. ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A GOOD GRADE UNLESS YOU SACRIFICE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE FOR STUDYING. THIS CLASS HAS DRAINED THE HAPPINESS OUT OF MY SOUL.
She makes the class so much harder than in needs to be. She talks 10000 miles/hour about the cell. Puts you to sleep very fast. However, you really don't have a choice to taker or not.
The most difficult class I've ever taken. Anything that comes out of her mouth is fair game for exams. Take notes on absolutely everything and study it all or you will fail.
Although Dr. V is a knowledgable, nice professor, her lectures are often stressful and rapidly paced to the point where many students have to record lectures. The exams are based on the most minor details from lectures and you must take the most thorough notes involving diagrams and examples she gives. You should study daily and attend the SI.
Dr. V is super funny and nice, she is always telling stories and cracking jokes during lectures. Although, the class material is HEAVY and difficult especially if you do not have a background in Biology. Attendance is not required but if you do not go to the lectures, you will not pass. Also, be sure to attend SI sessions and office hours!!!
This class is insanely hard and requires a lot of studying but she is very kind and does make opportunities for students to go to office hours and ask her questions. Definitely take the service learning if possible as it helps your grade. She is a very intelligent professor and goes very quickly when teaching new material.
If you have a strong background in bio, then this class isn't too bad. If you are coming in having last taken bio freshman year of hs, yeah you're gonna have a rough time. But I got a 6 on the IB bio exam, recorded and transcribed her lectures, and studied 3 days before the test and got an A. Take her class seriously and you'll be fine.
This class was responsible for my downfall. For an introductory class it is impossible and the intense lecture teaching style makes it hard to keep up. Tests are based on small details that are often rarely mentioned and material is hard to retain because the lectures are so information heavy. This class requires you to have no life outside of bio.
Bro thinks she is Dr. Phil
Dr. V is perhaps one of the sweetest professors you will meet at Tulane. Beware of not attending class, make sure you make friends so they can send you class recordings. Make sure you constantly review your notes. Attend office hours and ask questions if needed. If you have trouble understanding, watch videos. Your memory is tested in this course.
Dr. V is so informative and prepares you well for her exams, but there is a LOT to learn. Would recommend recording and listening back to her lectures and take lots of notes in class! Get to know her and go to office hours to get answers to your questions.
You're going to have to take her. Her exams are widely difficult and everything she says in class can be on the test. But she's brilliant and CELL is interesting. Getting an A = no social life. If you're fine with doing meh: go to SI sessions, record her lectures, draw EVERYTHING out, and stay in the weekend before the exams. You'll survive
This class was not easy. Dr.V is a very challenging teacher and her curriculum will test one's motivation and ambition for the course. But it was not too bad. Though I was not an A student in this class, I definitely learned a lot of life lessons from this class and thoroughly enjoyed learning intro to cell with Dr.V.
Dr. V is a genius and very nice. The issue with the class was not her, but how difficult it was. Exams are challenging, and anything she says in class could be on it. Go to SI sessions, and review the material after she says it, rather than right before the exams because it adds up quickly. Doesn't take attendance but do not miss class. DRAW pics
Dr. V is the worst professor I've ever met!! DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS if it's not necessary. It's frustrating to spend hell lotta time and still earn bad grades because of her tricky questions using confusing wording. Never try to argue about test questions.
This is a very difficult class, but it is passable. Make sure to record lectures AND ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THEM. Keep your notes up to date. She blows by topics rly fast so relisten to lectures on same day bc trying to listen to them all before the test is draining. Requires great study habits. No need to read textbook, but online code needed for hw.
Pass-fail service learning component of CELL1010. We go out and collect/test water in Audubon Park and submit data/reflections afterwards. TAs grade all of these; some more leniently than others. Ends in a final presentation at LUMCON re: data trends and a water topic of choice. Final grade here counts as a midterm in CELL1010, which boosts grade.
if you don't need to take this class don't. there are 3 types of people in this class: 1. the student who gets an A 2. the student who gets a C 3. the student who drops out
I thought people were kidding when they said that this class was the hardest class they've ever taken. They were right. It's not just that the volume of information is astronomical, it's that all of your grade is determined by three tests and five homework assignments, that's it. No makeups, no late work, no second chances. Be careful
Rundown: -Knows her stuff. EVERYTHING she says can be on the test, it helps you understand the curriculum -A few homework assignments, three exams, and a final, one drop, go to SI sessions! -Office hours are great bc she remembers faces, so it will help to get to know her! -Material is hard but put in a lot of work and you can do well
This class is hard! Be ready for the level of difficulty. Seek help in the very beginning if you don't understand. She lets you record lectures and I recommend doing that.
This class is a fever dream in the best way. She remembers EVERYONE, and will make comments if certain people are missing. Write down anything she says and writes (more important than slide notes) and you will do well. She allows students to record lectures because she talks rather quickly, which helps for students who don't write fast or get lost.
I want to give Dr. V the biggest hug ever. She is the most inspirational teacher I've ever had, and she pays attention to each and every student (even if you're not aware of it lol). She is hands down the smartest person I've ever met, and she really cares about her students and really locking in the material.
This is a very difficult class, if you study a lot and put in a lot of effort you will do well. If you care about this topic and want to actually learn then take her. Dr. V is actually very kind and funny and opens up a lot when you get to know her. Go to her office hours and at least 2 SI's a week. Record and listen to lectures. 3 tests and 1 drop
Dr. V is no joke, but if you go to office hours, which is a MUST and attend and record ALL lectures you will succeed. I promise that the grade you get in this class is directly a result of effort not difficulty
Record every single lecture, listen to it after class and write down every single word Dr. V says. Go to as many office hours as possible. This class is not hard, it's just a lot of work. If you want the A ,you need to work for it. Dr. V is extremely willing to teach and help you understand but you HAVE to want to put in the effort.
I went into Dr. V's class with great study habits and had never had a class drag me down so quick. She's a sweet lady but I don't recommend her as a teacher. You have to record her classes because she really does remember everything she says in lecture and will put it on the test. I spent a ton of time on this class and struggled the whole semester
I said that I would not retake her, only because the class was so hard. Dr.V is a great teacher and very knowledgeable, so there is no doubt that you will learn a lot in her class. There was a big learning curve to her class, and I think I struggled to adjust to her pace, teaching style, and test style.
This class is super challenging, as Dr. V talks very quick and covers so much material. She is so smart and she has such photographic memory- so go to class!! Take good notes during lectures and REVIEW!! 3 midterms (lowest grade dropped), 1 final exam, and a little bit of homework. Si sessions are also super helpful.
Attending office hours is highly recommended since the class covers a lot of material rapidly. The textbook is optional, but helpful for reviewing content. Anything the instructor mentions can be tested. I have never earned below an A in a class, but I am honestly proud of my B. The course was tough, but Dr. V was always kind and accessible.
Dr. V is the best. She is hilarious and a very straightforward teacher. Study hard, ask lots of questions, and do not be afraid to go to office hours.
Look I rated Dr. V really low last year after taking her class in fall. Now I am working at a research group and I found her lectures so helpful. All of those she taught in class would be really helpful (and pretty basic) in the future if you are going to the bio/med field. Absolutely recommend her cell1010 class.
Dr. V is so caring, intelligent, and amazing! Her lectures contain all information that is needed for exams, so take notes and compare with classmates. She also never assumes that her content is common sense and is always willing to explain and re-explain things if people are confused. She is fantastic and provides a strong basis of the subject.
She is a very nice lady, but her class is extremely difficult. 90% of her lectures consist of trying to decipher what she writes on the board and actually keeping up enough to be able to take notes. Studying for her class took up more time than all 4 of my other classes combined. You will only do well if you took AP Biology in high school.
If you are not 100% sure that you want to be a pre-med major, she will give you reassurance. The tests are hard, and you will need to understand everything because they are also tricky. Please be aware that you will have to record the lectures because she talks really fast. Also, I recommend writing the notes instead of typing.
Dr. V, while intelligent is a hard lecturer, and unapproachable. Your grade is determined by 3 tests, but these tests require you to memorize everything she says in class. Dr. V also takes pride in being a hard teacher as she even brags about it during office hours. She comes across as very condescending and does not accommodate any student.
Cell 1010 with Dr. V will make you want to rethink pre-med. She is a terrible teacher who often gets sidetracked and distract the class. Her tests are insanely hard. She uploads notes but you really need to be in class and write down everything she says. Always record. If you don't dedicate severe time to studying, you will fail, and she won't care
Dr. V is unnecessarily hard because she finds pride in making it hard. There is no reason why the class average should be that low for an introductory level class, and why one has to dedicate 3-5 hours a day to study for her class. I have gotten A's in upper-level stem courses, and I still found her cell class harder than them. Don't take it w/ V.
Hardest class I have ever taken at Tulane. Take it w/ Han if you can, because she purposefully designs her class to be this hard. She is very renowned and respectable, but she also is just flat-out rude and does not care if you do poorly. If you are taking her, good luck and memorize every word she says.
Haven't met anyone who has gotten an A in this class without taking AP Bio. Any word she says during lecture can be tested on. She's sweet but avoid taking her. I study everyday, never miss class, and attend all SIs. If I'm lucky I'll get a B-/C+. This class will demotivate you by how much you will struggle. Honestly cried alot over her class.
I had an amazing GPA before this class. I'm 100% not someone to give a professor a low rating for no reason. There is zero reason for an intro bio class to be this difficult. I have never studied harder for anything in my life yet have never recieved lower grades. She is nice to the A students and rude to those who are struggling and want help.
the rumors were true.
Dr. V is such an engaging lecturer and she is super smart. She seems intimidating but really she is very nice and always willing to help her students. Her class is hard but if you put in the effort and go to office hours and SI sessions it won't be as bad. Take notes by hand so you can draw all of the diagrams she writes on the chalkboard.
Weed out class. The free tutoring center, Jasmine's videos on YouTube, and the SIs were the main reason I did not fail this class. I did not take AP Bio so I had to do tutoring 2x-3x a week and go to SI session to keep up. She's notorious around Tulane for having a difficult class, it doesn't feel like an intro class at all.
The class is difficult, but Dr. V delivers the content well. Lectures have a good mix of tables, diagrams, and some anecdotes. I was able to understand things from the way she explained with words and pictures. I recommend recording every lecture and listening to it because she goes very fast during class. Also go to office hours and SI sessions.
Dr. V may have been the best STEM professor that I have had. She was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and funny. In a lecture of almost 100 students, she would still manage to engage and include all of us in her lectures. Be sure to attend lectures and record them because anything she says during lectures is fair game for the exams. Very accessible!
Dr V's class is definitely very content heavy so get ready to study. She makes cell biology interesting with examples you WILL remember and holds very interactive but fast paced classes. I recommend recording the class on your phone and using it to go over your notes. Go to her office hours especially if you're in a TR class; it helps get ahead.
Can cell be hard? Yes, but it is doable. Her lectures were always funny and extremely applicable. If you are into research or are premed, her class will be beneficial. She's a fun person to talk to and learn about; she also helped me find research experiences.
Dr.V is no doubt one of the best professors at Tulane. Her class is difficult and get ready to study but she prepares her students for courses following this class.People say that you won't do well in this class if you haven't taken AP bio which is not true. Hard work and studying/reviewing lectures will be your saving grace in this class(and anki)
Dr. V's class is notorious for being difficult; however, it is doable. Studying the night before is NOT a good idea (trust). Contradictory to what people say, I recommend typing notes bc she talks VERY fast. Also have paper handy to write/draw everything she puts on the board (hard to read). She denies it but has photographic memory so go to class.
Attend lectures, take notes (take pictures of in-class drawings/tables), go to SI sessions, review new info, use StuDocu. Can't avoid the grind for this class, but Dr. V gives you all the tools to succeed. 3 midterms (lowest dropped), doable homework, and cumulative final. Curves class grade up half letter grade (my B raw score curved to A-)
This class was very difficult for me because I didn't have a background in biology going into the class and I wasn't ready for the rigor of this class. We covered a lot of content every class and I would recommend recording her lectures, attending office hours, and going to SI sessions. This is a class that you need to review for every single day.
Dr. V is a wonderful person and professor. This class is hard and information-heavy but if you put the work in, it will pay off! Attend ALL SI sessions (there are recorded versions on the ALTC YT channel), go to office hours, read the textbook before going to class, record lectures if it helps you. 3 exams (1 drop), 1 final, and a bit of homework.
Dr. V is undoubtably the most intelligent professor at Tulane. For Cell 1010 there is a book, however unless you really feel you need to supplement the material you can ignore it, her lectures are more than sufficient. She is a genuinely good and caring person if you take the time to know her. Her intro class is tough, gotta work for it.
Dr V is a sweet person and extremely intelligent. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF NOT NECCESARY. Her lectures are intense, and it's sometimes hard to understand what's she writing or saying, especially because she does not repeat herself. You do not have many opportunities to get your grade up outside of tests, and this class is extremely difficult.
This is one of the hardest classes I have taken at Tulane and it is extremely irrational how much information you must obtain to succeed in this class. Dr. V is a very intelligent and passionate professor but the course load is unreasonable.
THERE IS NO REASON FOR BIO TO BE SO HARD. I got a 4 on AP Bio but had to take this class for my major and I'll be happy if I end up with a B. This class is a GPA killer, weed out class. The average on every test is in the mid-70s which I think should prompt dr.v to do some teacher self-evaluation.
So much dissonance w this course. Most intelligent prof, you will learn SO much abt bio, lectures are interesting, class is so valuable. Unfair as I think it disadvantages people w/o AP bio background, people who have to work, can't pay for private tutor, etc. GPA killer but you will learn so much.
I LOVED Dr. V and cell1010. Everyone complains that its way too hard and a "weed out class," but if attend class, take notes, rewrite/study your notes, then you'll be fine (I never recorded the lectures). It helps if you took AP Bio, but you didnt NEED to. She also gives you a drop exam which is so generous. This class made me declare my bio major!
If you enjoy being happy, your well-being, or not being traumatized then do not take this class. If you did not ace every cell 1010 class, do not take this class. If you want to have a life outside of genetics, do not take this class. Basically, if you can't comit to living, breathing, and eating genetics then do not take this class. save yourself.
to preface: dr. v is a wonderful professor. she is kind, funny, and has very interesting lectures. however, this is the first class I have ever failed in all my time in school. do not take this class if it's not necessary for ur major, and I learned the hard way that if you think that you're studying hard, study harder. cell is not for the weak.
This class has a reputation for a reason. It is very content heavy, but manageable if you put in the work. Make sure to listen back to the lecture before the next class to stay on top of content. Go to all SI sessions. Dr. V is very funny and interesting. Try to avoid taking this class with many other STEM classes because it takes up a lot of time.
This is the best way to describe Dr. V. She is the best person you will ever meet. However, class is going to have you confused and she goes CRAZY fast. please if you take this class I advise you to take little to no other STEM courses. This class will consume every bit of your time.
dr. v is one of the most knowledgable professors i have ever met. she is very accessible outside of class and willing to make sure her students succeed. however, i warn that this class is insanely difficult and recommend not taking difficult or many courses alongside it. study every single day. you will need to know every detail she says.
Extremely interesting class with probably one of the best professors at Tulane. Very difficult, but if you attend every lecture, take good notes (I recommend typing because of how fast she talks) and read the textbook, you will get an A as long as you put in the work. The textbook for this course will save your life. Go to office hours and SI.
Anyone who hates on Dr. V simply struggles with the rigor of the class rather than her as a person. Her class is difficult, but she is so funny, provides many examples to make complex processes simpler, and is always willing to help her students. If you study hard, you will leave with a strong biology foundation for science or healthcare careers.
Dr. V is an incredible professor; the material is just a lot to retain regardless of who would teach it. She has an amazing memory and will remember you if you go to class and make an effort. There are lots of resources like office hours and SIs. She gives one drop HW and test.
Dr. V knows what she is doing, gives great lectures, is engaging, and really takes an interest in all of her students. I took her class online for the summer and was honestly surprised with how engaging she is and felt very connected to her and her class even with it being over zoom. Study, pay attention to detail, and ask questions. You'll do fine
Dr. V is an incredible professor, and truly teaches a lot of interesting information. Make sure you pay attention to her lectures and GO TO CLASS. Her exams are pretty difficult and most of the questions come from the information she says out loud, so take notes on the things she says in class. If you balance your time and study you will succeed.
This is a weedout class so be prepared. The tests are extremely hard. You will have to recall every little detail that is said in class. I didn't read the textbook, tests are only on in-class material. She told us HW was graded, but then changed her mind at the end of the sem. She is not accommodating to any personal issues.GO TO EVERY CLASS AND SI
Dr. V is a tough but engaging professor. The class is a real challenge, but her lectures are worth attending as she breaks down the complex material well. Utilize resources like SI sessions and unstuckstudy ai to stay on top of the demanding content. With consistent hard work, you can succeed in this class.
I had Dr. V and did everything possible to get a good grade. She genuinely just didn't like me and the TAs didn't help. Very sad ending. Would not ever recommend. Good luck
Singlehandedly the worst class I have ever taken in my life and I still get nightmares about it. I attended every lecture and every SI session and still ended with a C. Worst accent, horrible handwriting. The test covers every SINGLE SMALL DETAIL she says. And you HAVE to go to class because whatever she says in lecture is fair game for the exams.
Dr. V knows almost all her students are pre-med, so she sets you up for success by giving lecture-heavy lessons. I feel I learned so much from her which is very useful for the MCAT and future pre-med and med school classes. She is very approachable in and out of class if you need clarification. Yes, you will do well if you are a dedicated pre-med.
I LOVED genetics. I also took Dr. V for Cell 1010. Hot take - I thought genetics was easier than cell. The exams may be objective harder but the content was more interesting and easier to study. The class is structured very similar to cell. It requires even more in depth learning and understanding of the material but I would take again if I could.
This was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken and I barely passed. If you didn't take AP Biology in high school it is borderline impossible.
Dr V is known to be a very difficult professor and that's the truth. She is very smart so sometimes her lectures can be hard to follow. She is very funny and absolutely accessible outside of class. Go to SI and office hours and you'll be good. Also STUDY.
Dr. V is notorious around campus for being a very difficult professor, and the rumors do not lie. This class is not an easy A, and if you want to do well, you have to put work in. However, Dr. V is very caring, and she wants to see you succeed. She is always available. Use whiteboards to study, go to office hours, and attend SI sessions.
Dr. V is a great teacher, but this class is very difficult. However, if you put in the effort, go to office hours, SI sessions, and review the material frequently you can do well. There are 3 exams and a final. You also get to drop your worst exam and worst assignment grade.
She is amazing and makes class super engaging and fun. But, unless you never miss class, re listen to every single lecture, read through all her slides, and study for hours upon hours, you genuinely will not get an A. I wouldn't take her again because I just don't want to do that much work but she's better than the option for the other cell1010.
Dr. V is one of the most knowledgeable professors that I've taken. Her lectures are very engaging, and her past students say that they feel well prepared after taking her. Go to the SI's and study a little bit daily, and you'll do well.
Dr. V's class is definitely challenging, but equally as doable. If you go to every lecture and put in time to revise, you'll do great!! Definitely watch Jasmine's videos to understand the topics. Dr. V teaches fast, so people recorded lectures to help them understand the material better. Tests come straight from the lectures so listen attentively!
I wont lie, this class was really hard; however, it really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Look over your notes everyday and attend SI sessions when you can and you'll do fine. You will learn a lot if you take her class seriously.
Unless this class is MANDATORY for you to take to graduate, don't. Take this later on, not freshman year. Dr. V is a sweet and hilarious woman, but she has very high standards. Record her lectures bc anything and everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, she says is fair game for her exams. She does drop lowest midterm and homework which is nice.
Dr. V's class is challenging but manageable. You don't need prior experience, like AP Biology, to succeed. Attend every class, participate in SI sessions, and record lectures to review anything you might have missed. Jasmine's videos are also an excellent resource. Dr. V is incredibly kind and supportive. As long as you study you'll be fine!
I took her for cell 1010 and genetics. The content is a lot harder to grasp IMO. The hardest part of the class is trying to get all of the notes you need to study. Getting an A is doable, but this class will always be your 1st priority.
She is absolutely a pleasure to learn under, even though the material made me want to die sometimes. Class is very difficult, so get ready to study and dedicate yourself. The material she goes over is very useful for those taking the MCAT, so pre med students should look to her. Her lectures are lowkey fun, with anecdotes that made me laugh. 10/10.
I LOVE DR. V. Her class definitely lives up its reputation as difficult, but if you study and put in the work to memorize a lot of material at once, you should be fine.
Great professor, hard subject. She's the best option available and even though the subject is hard, the curve at the end is a savior. Make sure you do the smaller assignments because they can bring up your grade a lot. Use your SIs and their practice exams.
This course made me switch majors and think about dropping out. Dr. V is respected, but her teaching style doesn't match the difficulty of the material. Studying felt impossible. Even with office hours and SI sessions, I felt underprepared for exams and never fully understood the material. Unless you can make a huge time commitment, don't take it.
Can't help but love Dr. V, she's so funny and literally knows everyone in the class even if you barely talk. Genetics is not as bad as cell1010 with her imo. A lot easier to just take notes in class then make flashcards to memorize, but make sure you can apply the concepts. Also do the homework its such an easy grade boost.
Dr. V is amazing and so funny. She knows everything and will teach you ALL of it. There's so much content and she talks fast but go to SI and study at least 1 week before tests and you'll do well. She basically has a photographic memory so she knows if you skip class too. This class really taught me how to study. I recommend her over other prof
She's better option than other prof for cell1010. But it is SO much material that u will have to sacrifice SOO much time for this class. Only advice is actively study after she teaches even if it's for 30 min. DONT skip class. Good luck you'll need it ;)
Dr. V doesn't teach at all. She simply talks and expects us to understand. She will also write things on the board and erase it in 0.5 seconds. Her exams are dreaded by all of her students.
professor is an absolute unit; she's very intelligent and knowledgeable about the topics. HOWEVER, you better be prepared to put in the work bc this class is hard lol. i never ended up going to the SI sessions or her office hours (mainly bc i couldn't), but i think they would be beneficial. all in all, good luck.
I love Dr. V. Be prepared to put in the work and you will do well. Go to office hours and SI sessions. One of the best professors at Tulane. Record her lectures and listen to them while you study.
Hey so this is actually insane!!! This class basically ripped me into shreds and then used a glue stick to put me back together. The level of studying should be illegal under the eighth amendment and if you're bad w/ science or didn't take AP Bio, you are FINISHED. Like u actually fully cooked + burnt. This class turned me into CHUZZ from stress.
Let me just start by saying the expectations are EXTREMELY unreasonable in this class. When you go to ask for help/study suggestions, all she does is tell you to cover the mcq answers on the test. I spent HOURS AND HOURS studying just to be absolutely miserable. Don't take this class if it's not a requirement for your major!!!
Must put in LOTS of time. Her accent is a bit hard to understand, and she speaks fast. She made rude remarks sometimes. Do: class, SI, Jasmine's vids, & review notes often. Couldn't make it to office hours but was able to get an A. Learned how to study from this class but really stressful. Would only take her again if there isn't an easier teacher
Went into this course fearing the worst. Will say that this course is meant to weed out students who don't have the best work ethic. If you go to most lectures and either go to SI or watch recordings of lectures from SI, then questions on the tests will seem fair. 20 min of studying a day + prioritizing understanding material is key to an A.
I love dr. v. easy tests, easy material. she teaches in the nicest ways and gives everyone an A+ because she is such a caring person.
I loved Dr.V. Her class was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, but she is really funny, and if you put in the time you can do well. Definitely go to her office hours.
Amazing professor. Was an overall difficult class, but what helped me was attending every lecture and watching Jasmine's vids (former SI). I personally never went to SI sessions, but I also had a good background in bio. She says students are afraid to go to her office hours, but Dr. V is super funny and she's great to get to know outside of class!
Dr. V is an incredible teacher. Even if you aren't from a "stem" background or level of expertise, all you need to do to be successful in her classes are to apply yourself- go to si sessions, office hours, etc. By far the smartest and best stem teacher I've ever taken. Dr. V truly cares about her students.
Best/hardest teacher I've ever had. This class taught me a lot about myself and how to study for difficult exams. Anyone who gives Dr. V a better rating usually doesn't go to class or doesn't put in the time. If you work hard in this class you will do well. Dr. V is one of the greatest teachers at Tulane, and the best one I've ever had.
This class took years off of my life. Very difficult because of the speed and volume of information that is being thrown at you, but Dr V tries to make it a little easier to understand. Despite her efforts its still almost feels impossible. However Dr V is a great person, a little intimidating, and cares about what she teaches.
