Materials dated, refuses to acknowledge current trends in news mediums-RUN!
Her classes are not easy, but she is very knowledgeable and a great prof. I learned a lot from her, and I would highly recommend her classes to anyone who wants to explore/pursuit journalism. Ian Yeh, Newscast Director, CBS
was in both of her classes and hated both of them. she is very inconsistent and does not fully explain her topics. She does not know how to time manage and is too motherly to her classes, she needs to teach high school.
She is nuts. She has lost all sence of reality. Her time management is very poor. She only cares about the news paper that she is the advisor for. Her class is pretty easy. You just need to do a lot of writing. She is very smart but she has lost her touch with her students.
Isn't very helpful to her students. Worries a lot about the campus newspaper, and not much else. Nice person but not the greatest teacher
Run! Very disorganized. Very politically left. Doesn't remember to take role or give quizzes. Doen't remember much of anything. Take notes and tape-record to back up your claims. Literally almost blind. Only cares about getting by. Relies on lackies. Don't take if you don't have to. Not required!
I dont agree with all of the positions she takes on cirtin issues. but shes a great professor. Vary loyal and will stand my her students. Recomended highley
She is a good teacher, but closed minded to current trends in media. Also, does not allow students to fully express their own view. for example profanity, drug usage and xxx sex at JACC.
She is closed minded and lets personal feelings get in the way of her grading. After two years with her I am able to walk away with no respect for her as a person or a professor.
this teacher is EVIL. Im a very good student and i worked hard in this class. i wrote tons of papers and about half of them she didnt agree with so i didnt get points and a lot of the others she just lost them. i was supposed to get a B in the class but she failed me instead. ive never gotten even a C before until now. dont waste ur time and money
Horrible!! Plays favorites, Expects everyone to be extreme liberals, plays favorites and talks bad behind everyones back. no one likes her and are just taking it to further themselves. Not recomended

I've never doubted Megs ability to teach journalism courses. I can credit all my knowledge about journalism and communications to her. Her classes can seem a little overwhelming at first but she always has the best intentions for her students in mind. All in all, she will do whatever it takes to make sure you succeed in whatever you plan to pursue.
She is a horruible teacher. I had her for two years and at first she liked me and I did well in the class, then she hated me and went behind my back to give me a C, based purely on the fact that she did not like me. I was going to take her to the school board, but I figured it would be a waste of time. I dislike her very much especially as a person
I do not agree with ANY of the statements. She is such a caring teacher and I enjoy her a lot. She tends to be a bit left sided but likes students to speak up. Easy class to pass, just show up. She is passionate about journalism so if you are interested in this field, talk to her right away!
one of the most boring classes i have ever taken. do not take this teacher!! runnn away!!!!!
omg...i cant stand this woman. i had to drop her class because she drove me insane. two semesters was two too many. unless you absolutly HAVE to take this class...don't. she is insane.
i love this lady! she teaches good and the subject is very interesting the projects are very interesting too
I may have rated highly, but be forewarned, a very left slant in all the material. Opinions of students are considered but in my view suppressed. Left slant: in the form of a barrage. Anything anti-right that makes the news is an optional project to comment on weekly.
This professor is passionate about only journalism, seems thats the only thing in her life she loves. She can be really rude one minute and then real nice. She disagrees with half of the students in my class and argued away all the time. It seems that she chooses favorites so you have to kiss up to her. YOu have to do all of her hw assignments or d
this woman is living in the dark ages, journalism is not what it used to be 1000 years ago.
She is the worst teacher ever. I have never felt such hate towards a teacher. TONS of pointless handouts. Barely gives back your HW. She doesnt answer questions. She needs to get fired, or just leave and save everyone. She is horrible. DONT EVER TAKE HER. wait a semester and take someone else im not kidding.
SHE'S AWESOME! EASY A, AS LONG AS YOU SHOW UP and DO AT LEAST SOME HW.
made me change my major
Eh she's ok. She's really hard. But if you join the newspaper it's like an automatic A
Com101 is a begining class this was just for fun. Her assignments are easy but she grades hard
Meg is a good teacher, but she is always so busy with the college paper that it becomes hard to get a hold of her consistently. She does not always respond to emails, and missing the class more than twice will put you on her blacklist. Comm 101 is a serious course, with alot of writing exercises, research, and homework.
Awsome teacher. she knows her stuff. Loves journalism, has a lot of connections for journalism. Must attend class. A LOT of homework and test. Grades very hard, but very nice and willing to help.
This class will help you if you want to be a journalist but be warned Megg is crazy and rude. If you dont join her clarion gang then you wont get an A I did so much work and I got a B while the girl next to me didnt even finish the final and got an A, wtf Megg! I did more than her. take someone else unless you wanna go thru hell in her class.
A lot of these positive comments have been fabricated by her employees, just FYI. She is scatterbrained, loses everything, is extremely unorganized and accuses everybody of having a learning disability. Swallow your pride and kiss her butt for a good grade.
This is my most enjoyable class. The only problem I have (and this is a BIG problem) she is HORRIBLE at answering questions. Don't even bother to ask her anything during class. You're better off asking the person next to you. It's an easy class with a lot of easy homework and it's just very chill.
Margaret O'Neil is a great teacher who wants her students to succeed. She is helpful when needed and expects a lot from her students. There are times when she may be hard to handle, but that's life. She is my mentor and my friend. I think she has taught me more about journalism that any other source. If you want knowledge and experience, take her.
She is awful. I'm in her summer school class now. Never answers questions, holds you in until minutes AFTER class ends. In fact, she even passed out an EXAM with twelve minutes left in class. She is unorganized and no matter how hard you work, your paper will almost always say, "no credit". Save yourself, don't become a journalist.
Where do I begin, she is a terrible teacher, she is uninterested in the class/students, and overall an apathetic and unorganized woman. If you are considering taking this class don?t do it or you will be like all of the other students in the class, asking yourself how does she still have this job and should I drop the class. Trust me it is a painfu
Where do I begin, she is a terrible teachers who dosn't care about the class/students, she is rude and condisenting and truly the worst professor I have ever had. If you are considering taking the class dont do it or you will end up asking yourself why did I take her and should I drop the class. Trust me it is a painful 16 weeks.
Meg O'Neil is an annoying, extremely rude lady whom lacks common sense. She basically teaches you nothing, talks about her children with ADD, her dog Noodle, and other really boring topics that have nothing to do with communications, nor does she help you with succeeding in life at all. She has little interest in her students well-being.
This is Reporting and Writing News. Class generally begins 15 minutes plus late as she has to walk from my first classroom to my second classroom. She then has students pass back papers taking another 10 minutes. She then goes over articles in newspapers which aren't assigned. I learn less in class than I could from my book. I feel this is wrong.
The book and class is interesting and amazing. John Vivian is the Author and its a pleasure to read. Meg Oneill... is HORRIBLE... I stongly recommend the class for the book and knowledge, but dont expect any sense from the professor or much from lectures. Its life and time you'll never get back...
Look, its not a hard class... & the reading material is fantastic. It's just, professors should LECTURE & TEACH! Its amazing the nonsensical things that we talk about, or monolog rather... There is never discussion, ever.EVERYTHING I've learned has been concepts that I've read out of the book. There is seldom a lecture, nothing worth taking notes..
I refuse to believe that the comments posted are about the professor I had the pleasure of working with two years ago. Meg had handed me more knowledge than any other professor in not only the CC system, but the Cal State system as well. She has helped me win numerous awards at the state and national level. She is a wonderful mentor and professor.
the class is not impossible. if you come everyday and do everything you can get an A. But meg oneil is impossible. She brings and passes out 349587094385 news articles a day and spends the first half an hour talking about them. Shes rude and non approachable, waits till the last 5 min of class for you to produce your work.
I took Comm 100, 101, Freelance Writing and Desktop Publishing. I don't agree that she is in the "dark ages" - she makes a point to keep up on technological changes in journalism. She pushs her students hard to get the best and genuinely cares. She does believe that every writer of the paper should run for "editor" for the experience. Not.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Do not, I repeat DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. What a waste of time and money, I didn't learn a darn thing. Even in other classes I hear students talk about what a horrible teacher she is. If you are okay with listening to someone's nonsense for an hour then take her class. She loves talking about other people's personal lives too
If you enjoy being ignored and completely disregarded by far she is the best. She will not answer any of your questions, will talk about herself & all of her children with ADD and the most annoying, she says EVERYTHING that is on her mind.. including things we have no idea about. She is very rude and disrespect. Needs to retire already!!
meg completely irresponsible with papers and tends to lose them. She also fails to explain almost all of her assignments. Her lectures are useless. She needs to retire. Do not take this class!
Worst teacher I have personally encountered at Citrus College. Will ignore you, Will mess up your grade, Will pass out over 10 pages of useless articles anytime. DONT TAKE unless you need to.. For your own bennifet, this womans teacher style is very outdated! Also plays favorites! DO NOT TAKE
It is obvious that she does not like teaching communications. She is snippy, rude, judgemental and down right angry at times. She needs to move on from teaching the class. She makes the class a deplorable experience for all.
I spent many semesters with the Clarion and loved the experience b/c you can kind of do your own thing. Except not, b/c Meg tries to take too much control of what happens. I wish I could give her a good rating but she is offensive, stubborn, controlling, not as knowledgable as she thinks, talks too much, is biased in ideaology and towards students.
yes, she gives a lot of handouts out, yes, she goes off on tangents, but if you go to class, do all of your homework and assignments, you will get a good grade. she's a news junkie and expects you to be one. basically just be a student and do what you're supposed to do and you will pass
She will give you way to many papers, and will assign lots of take home quizzes. If you do your work and show up on time she will help you with anything and everything news and journalism related. She is a good person to have on your side. Yes she is tough, but so is journalism. She will bring out the best of your abilities. Genuinely cares.
She makes hilarious comments. I like her. She's very liberal, but she values everyone's opinion. The take home quizzes aren't factored into your grade. Just turn in scantrons with random answers and your fine. Ignore all the handouts, focus on the articles your assigned. You will get an A if you show up and write.
I've had three classes with O'Neil and they've been some of my favorites! True, Meg can be difficult to work with at times (she has a different teaching style than most), and she may have different views than some, but I've never had any problems and as long as you do your assignments (and quizzes) well and on time, you should be just fine...
First of all, she does not favor students with liberal viewpoints. I was extremely conservative and still did VERY well in her classes. True, she is a bit outdated. True, many students don't seem to like her. But, she cares about her students. She helped me find jobs, apply to a four-year college, etc. I love Meg and owe her the world.
Incredible teacher, changed my life. She loves the subjects that she teaches. Incredibly helpful to students and is great to those that want to learn.
old fashioned. rude. talks and talks for about 80% of the class. quiz or test every class. completely unapproachable. dont think she has really taught the class, just blabbers.
Meg O'Neil is not a good teacher. The only reason i took her class is because it was an easy add. She gives out way too many useless articles and she doesn't even go over the hm to try to explain what you're suppose to do. She is very rude and opinionated. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!
Anyone who is lazy don't think about taking this class. If you want a great teacher reference get an "A" in her class. Best person to have while trying to get in a four year college.
You have to do the work to pass this class. There is no other way around it. Develop an interest in journalism and it might make class easier for you.
I hate this class. You have to do the "optional" projects or you won't pass. She rambles about absolutely nothing so don't even bother trying to learn anything. Attendance is required, she passes around a sign-in sheet every class meeting. I'm a really good student and this class is going to ruin my GPA. Oh and the final is worth a minimum 200 pts.
REQUIREMENT: have atleast 3 braincells. All these comments say its a hard class. WRONG. you have to do the work (DUH) but all the work is optional so you pick the assignments that interst you. also theres no percentages its all points, if you fail a test it doesnt matter. just do extra assignments to make up for those points. pretty easy
There are pros/cons. She gives out a lot of work, gives out a daily agenda and there is a lot of paper work. Strict with deadlines. If you are a motivated person, you can do it. I enjoy her "ramblings" because she has a lot of great experiences to share. I recommend her if you are interested in journalism.
Meg is awesome! I have read some of the negative ratings on her and im convinced these people are writing about someone else. She is definitely eccentric, but please ... listen to her, she has a lot of knowledge. She seems organized and prepared. She has a real interest in student success, and it shows. If you go to class and do HW, you will b fine
Very chaotic, teach yourself every thing,I mean evvverrry thing, no order or defining what needs to be learned. many projecs which your gonna use to teach yourself. test are 2-3 min long end of class, gives too much unnecessary papers and lost many of students works during mid semester so everybody had to re-do alot stuff, too chaotic.
This class requires you to be in class and on time every session. If you are late you get no credit on your work. Shes tough but if your intrested in journalism it is really worth it to take her. Do her "additional assignments" for E.C there will be plenty. I passed with a B
I have never spoken ill of a teacher before but i will never take a class taught by Mrs. O'Neil ever again. We haven't learned anything. She rambles on about nothing that pertains to the chapters we are studying. Our tests are taken at the last 10 minutes of class, then she has the nerve to rush us if we are not done. A waste of money.
O'Neil is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. She steers away from the subject and can ramble for days. I know more about her family than the subject of communications. She is very unorganized, messy, and unwilling to have her students express themselves fully. I strongly recommend not to take her. Horrible teacher.
I found her to be extremely rude confusing and unorganized. Im not for people snatching papers from my hand or turning down people's opinion when asked. Keeping track of your grade Is impossible for the whole semester she was behind on grading and said she wont be done by the final why pass out some much work if you cant keep up with the grading?
She gets off topic all the time. There were many meetings where she gave us a history lesson. She talks a lot about her family. If the 200 question final were based on history and her family, i would have totally passed. She gives no direction to her students when it comes to the projects. She is very rude and always puts her hand in your face!
Can't stay on topic, takes nearly an hour to go through her prompt and tests don't mean a thing. Expect offensive language that only a babyboomer would make about race and gender. Take another professor instead and if you can't, then change your major or wait until you can take another prof.
For someone who is a prof of journalism, she seems to lack a grasp of how news is reported in the modern day. Woefully unaware of new tech. She also seems to forget language about race and gender that is not cool with AP Stylebook. Take another prof or change your major.
She falls behind on grading very quickly. You will go pretty much the whole semester not knowing what your grade is. You'll ask yourself "What's the point?" for a lot of the work she assigns. She goes off on tangents a lot. She is very passionate of journalism and communications overall but it is hard to enjoy her class.
O'Neil is a mixed bag, she's obviously passionate about news and tries to impart the practice of being aware to her students but she can forget a bit about the clock. There was many a time where she wouldn't have time to give us quizzes she said we should be prepared for. Overall though she's fair and if you keep on top of things you'll do well.
Yes, she can be a little scattered at times but it's quite easy to get her back on track. Really cares about her students. Feedback on your stories are amazing, will definitely be a valuable source to improving your writing. Can be combative on matters she is passionate about. Always remember that your EIC has final say on all your stories.
She never stops talking, I wish that were hyperbole but it sums her up the best. Clearly she knows a lot about communications, but this class felt like sitting in a classroom listening to an audiotextbook for 90min. At least her PR class had a few group work days, this was nothing but pure lecture drudgery from day one. Easy to amass points though.
To pass with a good gra you have to do a lot of homework. There are also a lot of tests. Attendance is mandatory. She is fair with her grading and expectations. She will make you work for your grade. It helps if you read the newspaper and keep up with current events. The book is a necessity if you can't afford it they have a copy in the library.
She isn't as bad as most people say. Just do your work and you will easily pass. Plenty of opportunities for points. Book is not needed. Test and quiz don't matter. Just don't be lazy and the class is actually easy. The assignments are pretty interesting. No negative points in the class which is cool so if you fail tests/quiz it won't hurt you.
As a comm major, by far one of the hardest class I have taken. The reading material is interesting, but the dates stuff are due are confusing! Do extra credit and keep up with the news!!!
Do not buy the textbook! You can go to the library and read the section for the week. She is very stubborn and does not really stay on topic. The class is based on a point system which makes it harder. She is also unorganized and hands back a lot of papers which gets confusing. Field trips are mandatory if you want to pass.
Professor O'Neil is a great professor you just have to show up ON TIME, read the required readings, do your homework and establish a relationship with her. She is a tough grader but she is only trying to help you reach your maximum potential. You have to keep up with the media and if you plan on becoming a journalist then truly devote yourself.
She's unclear in her teaching and takes a while to give projects back. The class is heavily based on current events and projects. She also assumes that the people in the class are journalism/ communications majors. I would not take her again.
If you're a communications major and must take the mass comm 100 and 101 do not take this professor. She will just talk through the whole class about unrelated things. Beware of long quizzes to be taken in a short amount of time.
2 quizzes a day, one at the beginning and one at the end. Not only would she ramble for the entire 3 hour class about nothing relevant to the curriculum, but she would hold us in longer to take the final quiz. Homework and grading system is very unclear. Doesn't update you about your grade until it's too late. overall bad time
I did not enjoy her class at all it was very project heavy. She always said nothing was mandatory but in order to pass you needed to turn in at least 7 projects. Also to do well in the class stay up to date on current events. Don't take this class
Long winded lectures about nothing relevant. Never really updated on grades until it's far too late. Ridiculous amount of busy work with no clear learning objectives, in fact I have no idea at what point we were supposed to learn something. I still don't know how well I did on any of the work I've done. Rethinking a journalism major.
I would not recommend taking class with her. During class she talks on and on about things that aren't relevant to whatever we're "supposed" to be studying. Honestly don't think I learned anything from her class. Her grading system makes it almost impossible to get an A unless you do every single optional assignment that she gives.
Really nice lady, but if you want to succeed you really need to stay on top of all "optional" coursework. Attendance went from 45 to 8-10 regular students due to the dull-ish lectures and excessive in class and projects/homework, all of which are not mandatory. Grades by points, so if not enough assignments are completed, it reflects on final grade
I don't recommend taking this class. Her lectures are irrelevant to what we are supposed to be learning. "Optional assignments" are not really optional because you must do them to get a decent grade. Makes you read the textbook word for word because quizzes are hard and do not test you so much on important concepts, just random facts.
