This professor gives amazing lectures and she is clearly very passionate about biology, however, I would switch professors if I could. If someone does all the required pre-readings, takes notes from the txts and goes to lectures they should get a good grade. NOT. The pre-reading q's and m/c midterm q's were confusing, and midterm was too long!
Such an inspiration for women into STEM and super passionate about biology & biochemistry. I'm an arts student but she's making me think of switching to science! Be prepared (do ALL the pre-reading and practice q's) and don't be shy to talk to her and ask questions, & you will succeed. She's very approachable and has the geekiest/nerdiest humor.
Her lectures are amazing and really well prepared. Class work is engaging and she works well with the lab instructors and TAs. Megan's passion for biology shines each lecture and she makes you really get into proteins (her favourite haha). Very approachable! Exams are hard, as to be expected in a bio course, but be prepared and you'll be fine.
Megan takes lectures not as a opportunity to build on the specifics from the prereading we were assigned, but to revisit 1-2 simple concepts. Often times you will find yourself going 50 min without writing anything bc she doesnt present anything above a bio 12 level There is a huge misalignment between test material and what is presented in lecture
Megan is an amazing prof! Being a first year, I found the workload quite heavy and hard to keep up with, but it definitely pays off if you do. Lots of iclickers and group worksheets, which make the lectures more engaging. Midterms are tough but fair and very similar to the practice questions that she gives.
Megan spends too much time thinking about how she will look cool to the students then actually caring if she does well. Her exams are too long, with questions bogged down by useless words and she spends a lot of time in lectures wasting time about the little things, but quizzing the most obscure details in the reading for that week. AVOID
Take a different section if you can. Wastes time in lectures on simple topics, just tries to do too much to make biology cool. The wording on pre-reading q's is often misleading, and whether you've done the reading or not won't matter because she will quiz on abstract stuff , but then spend the whole lecture talking about the easy stuff.
Dr. Barker spent enormous amounts of lecture needlessly interacting with the crowd. The small amount of time left over barely allowed us to advance past the simple concepts from the pre-reading, and into difficult exam type examples. For a student to be successful in this course, a large amount of time must be spent seeking other learning sources.
Exams are very wordy and long so you would run out of time often. Lectures are very general while exams are very specific which is not helpful. Workload is heavy and need to review often to not fall behind. Tries to make class entertaining but wastes time and not helpful in long run. Must study extra to do well in class. Long readings + quizzes.
Loved her as a person, not so much as a prof. She spent a lot of time trying to inspire her class to study and work in groups, as well as discussions outside of bio rather than the actual material. She was extremely accessible though, lots of hours and although her tests were a little wordy, they were pretty fair.
very long exams, not quite helpful lectures.
Exams are very wordy and you usually run out of time for them. Pre-reading is mandatory but prof goes over concepts in class anyways. Doesn't cover material similar to tests, only teaches the basics so be ready to go searching for other study material.
On the exams I found myself reading these paragraph long questions with so much malarkey, only to realize I just spent 5 minutes reading a multiple choice question. Lectures were simple, briefly explaining a few concepts out of many from the entire chapter. Exams are brutal, average is about 50-60%. No curving/scaling of grades. GL you'll need it.
Megan is one of the best profs i have ever had! She is enthusiastic and clearly explains all concepts we cover in class. Some people expect to be able to just show up to class and get an easy A, Thats not the case. The pre readings are necessary as they teach you the basic concepts that she continues on. Tests are long but similar to the practice.
She's a very nice person, and easy to talk but.. but she can't teach very well. Her lectures are based on the easier / easiest concepts, and she doesn't spend any time time on the material she tests you on.. Which leads me to say her tests don't make sense more than half the time. Don't waste your time with her class, save your GPA
Her passion and enthusiasm is amazing in all of her lectures. She knows how to engage the class and always looks for feedback on her teaching. She gives good summaries in lectures but her exams require work on your own to grasp the details. She gives very good support though.
Her exams were challenging but fair, really makes you work for a good grade, but the averages were pretty normal for first year science courses. She gives lots of office hour times before exams and is very approachable. Her lectures were decent and her enthusiasm for the course material made the class enjoyable.
I strongly disagree with the many people saying that Megan's expectations were unclear. I wish that all of my professors cared enough to make detailed reading outlines that explicitly state what to skip and what is fair game for testing. Megan is an exceptional instructor who goes above and beyond but demands her students work at hard as she does.
expects to complete exams with a minute for each question even tho majority voiced that it wasnt reasonable for us, she didnt take our suggestion and kept exams lengthy and material on exams was unexpected compared to what we covered in lecture.
Avoid. Wastes time. Tests are not fair. I don't want to take any more biology classes thanks to her.
AMAZING LECTURES and her knowledge and excitement for the material made the class even better! I learned so much in her lectures and although the pre readings may seem tedious at times, they really help solidify your understanding of the material we go through in class. Please take her class if you can, it was awesome!
She is very enthusiastic and passionate about biology, I honestly really enjoyed attending her lectures, even tho she does not cover a lot of difficult concepts during lectures . But her tests are hard you have to memorize EVERYTHING and be fast at reading and answering questions. She puts a lot of effort into teaching.
Very passionate prof, and clearly knows the material and loves to teach others about biology; covers a lot of material in lecture & a lot of reading for pre-class quizzes. Tests are very long but fair - know your stuff really well so that you can complete the entire test.
Amazing prof! Easy A if you study well for midterms and final! Very fair tests! Provides lots of office hours for extra help if needed!
Both midterms and final exam were fair if you studied the textbook in depth (read the things she says to skip lol). Some exam questions have a ridiculous amount of jargon that could be cut down to make the question more clear. Kind professor, but pushes group activities to the point of irritation. One lecture, she only got through 1 slide. :/
Don't take this class with her. Her lectures are so boring she makes you do group work in the lectures and it usually doesn't make sense. Get ready to read. The midterms/final is different from what you are taught so get ready to pull allnighters. This course is way to heavy to be a first year course.
Amazing prof! She was one of my favourite profs at SFU and after taking her BISC 101 class, all the other profs pale in comparison. She puts lots of effort into her slides, students, and activities. Time flew by in her lectures! But beware, you will have to work to get a good grade.
Megan Barker was is my favourite prof at SFU. I managed to get a B in this course ONLY because her lectures were so chills. She made you like biology and gave so many examples. If you engage in lectures, do the readings (she tells you exactly what to read) you will do well in the course. BTW I got a C- in BISC 102 with a different prof. SHE DA BEST
She is so awesome. Scaled the final exam (over 100% was awarded to multiple students) Many questions on the final were minor variations on her practice exams. She's awesome, take her course, work hard, keep on top of your readings. She can't upload her brain onto yours, stop blaming her when you can't answer her questions - they are fair.
This course is based off of you doing the prereadings, and if not you are screwed for exams because you can't study off her lecture slides as they are just pictures! Bio with her is a self taught course. Nobody has time to study the lengthy and useless readings, recommended. She does not believe in curving (heads up). I had to retake the course!
Megan was the highlight of my First semester at SFU. She expected you to do the pre readings and have a grasp of the concepts before coming to lecture, and she went over the basis of everything you needed to know. Her tests were fair, maybe a little long but very, very similar to her practice exams. Get ready to read, but you need to go to lectures
This is one of those profs that makes you work your ass off for a good grade, but cares so much about her subject and inspires you to love Biology. Her lectures have group discussions and activities and are the most engaging I've had at SFU so far. She focuses a lot on her teaching methods, and it shows. Difficult course, but so worth it.
her exams are not related to what you read and learn. One of the shocking questions is that she was asking about Botox pillar treatment when I learned Digestion, Respiration/Circulation, Neurons and Signals, Muscles. Might be related concepts but for me, it doesn't make any sense to ask that to freshman students. We are not doctors.
I've been at SFU for 5 years and I can definitely say Megan is an AMAZING professor. The course is well structure in terms of course layout and study method, if you don't work hard, you will NOT do well. This means pre-read all the readings a week ahead, and do extra research on the side. It's also EXTREMELY important to do all her practice exams.
I knew NOTHING coming into this course. A lot of first year students were crying about exams being unfair, and for me this is NOT TRUE! If I came out on top knowing nothing to start, why can't you? Do not expect to be babied in this course like most first year courses, you HAVE TO READ, you HAVE TO DO EXTRA RESEARCH. MEGAN IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!
I already commented, but here are study tips: -Do pre-reading one week in advance for the online quiz -Take lecture notes in class -Review textbook notes + lecture notes at end of every week -Do all practice exams (THIS IS CRUCIAL) -Ask TAs for help + attend office for free answers to practice exam -Do pre- AND in-lab activities BEFORE lab
THE MOST CARING AND LOVING BIOLOGY PROFESSOR IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. I LIKED HER SO MUCH, I SOMETIME WISH SHE WAS MY MOM SO I CAN HAVE QUALITY DISCUSSION ABOUT THE WORLD WITH HER BECAUSE SHE KNOWS SO MUCH ABOUT EVERYTHING. ON TOP OF THAT SHE'S STILL STUDYING DESPITE HAVE HER MASTER. BEST WISHES ON YOUR NEWBORN MEGAN, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!
For the guy commenting on Botox pillar, that was only an example around a concept you ALREADY learned in class, it had nothing to needing outside class material to answer the question. For the guy commenting on having to read the book, get real, this is a university level course, you expect people to hold your hands all the time?
Last comment, if you want to do well in this class, read my past comments 08/16, ignore the whiny students who did poor because of their lack of effort, finding ways to get back at this amazing prof. I will tell you right now the only thing close to being 'unfair' is the amount of time given for the Final lecture exam, it was just awfully long.
One of my fave profs. Her lectures are engaging, and she only focuses on the material students find difficult (we filled out a feedback quiz each week). Although she's super nice, I had to work very hard for an A. Pre-class readings are definitely mandatory with megan, and exams were fairly difficult. But, if you put in the work you should be fine.
Amazing Prof. that actually care about student's opinion. Her lecturers are straight forwarded and easy to understand.
Super helpful and personable!! Makes the lectures engaging and fun, not too serious and helps you really understand the material. Midterms and exams are quite detailed and challenging though, lot's of hypothetical thinking
Dozens of assignments that are all worth a small percent of your grade. This professor has a strong belief that students should learn everything on their own. This course is manageable but be prepared to Google everything.
Course is tailored for students who thrive on independent study. Exams are quite difficult and require lots of attention to detail. The course is definitely manageable but you need to put work in extra effort as she doesn't cover everything in lecture. Super cool and funny person though, really cares about her students and is very engaging.
Amazing prof who cares a LOT. Tests are relatively tough. A lot of independent studying, but she's always ready to help and spend however much time you need to help clarify and answer questions. If you take advantage of her office hours, you will find the course very enjoyable and easy to get through. If you don't, you might find it quiet hard.
Did not explain things in detail
The course overall is not that hard but her grade scale is so weird. 10% tutorial quiz and 10% midterm. Idk how the midterm portion is same as the quiz portion and the midterm is much harder than the quizzes. And we have another midterm worth 15% and one lab exam one final. Basically we are preparing exam and quiz every week. So much pressure.
Super nice prof and decent course (101) if you do all the readings and take notes. Lectures aren't super helpful but you get clicker marks so... Barker is really accessible outside of class too, and very easy to chat with and clarify knowledge. She appreciates when students clearly put work in before coming to see her, and will be more helpful
Super nice and engaging. Teaches the material well in a way that makes you remember and understand it. Tests and marking was fair.
Megan is a great prof. She pays attention to detail in the course structure and is open to student engagement and suggestions. The targeted reading guides she gives are very helpful and save time when preparing for class. She's funny and tries her best to make lectures fun. She is very enthusiastic when teaching.
If Erin Barley is teaching BISC 101 then take her instead!! She was way better than Megan!! Megan has harder tests and sometimes more complex "apply your thinking" questions, and Erin has straightforward easy ones!! First midterm for Megan I got 53% and for Erins i got 73%!!!! Take Erin instead!
Megan is so so kind and very willing to answer any questions you may have. She's a new prof so she still understands the struggles students face. Her lectures are fun and connect well with the lab portion of the course. Her tests are very fare and she has multiple avenues to receive feedback from students so she knows what to focus on in lecture.
Megan is super funny, her lectures are engaging! But if you are an introvert this may not be the professor to take this class with. Every lecture you are forced to "discuss with people around you" and do group worksheets. The midterm and final both had "group" components too. But Megan is really great at explaining concepts and is a good prof!
I cannot say enough nice things about Megan, she is probably the best prof I've had at SFU! Very approachable and down to earth, I always felt comfortable asking her about pretty much anything! 408W is a 4th year lab course so obviously it's not going to be a piece of cake. But Megan makes it easier to excel in this course, and you learn a lot!
This was a pretty standard class considering you had to work hard for your grade. You really need to know the material to do good on the tests and I recommend basing your studying off the textbook mainly. Other than that, the only annoying thing was the lab preps/post labs were way too long and midterms/assignments take forever to get graded.
Took this class in summer online. Awful experience, do not take it with her. Notes + lectures useless. Need to memorize textbook and self teach if you expect a decent grade. She gave the hardest practice exam and exam questions (when I searched up a few practice answers, they were recycled from previous UBC second and third year bio courses).
This is a class that makes you work for it. If you put in the work you will see results & one of the plus points of Megan is that she doesnt let your marks only be affected by the tests (theyre spread out). This class has its downsides but if you work hard you can end strong! Read the textbook!!! Memorize it if you have to!
Megan is very kind and approachable, but she just wasn't very good at her job. Started semester off with a very different syllabus than at the end. Takes FOREVER to get any sort of feedback whatsoever. Most learning is done in lengthy textbook readings, lectures don't go into very much detail. The course was stressful due to disorganization.
Megan is sweet, caring and willing to adapt. She can be disorganized at times, but she's very open for comments and feedbacks, tho sometimes a little slow. Explains concepts very thoroughly and wants to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Inspires us to love Biology the way she does. Definitely one of the best profs I've ever had. Jolie
Overall Megan was a really good prof. Although she was often late to the lab, her pre-lab talks were very informative and she explained concepts really well. Equal participation between group members is really important in her lab class.
Dr. Barker is an amazing professor! She tries to engage with students and is always really enthusiastic. She gives two optional projects that can help bump up your grade which shows that she really cares about her students. The pre labs are a bit long sometimes but the labs are fine. Overall, totally recommend taking a class with Dr. Barker!
Really nice, you can tell she cares. Helpful pre-lab discussions, labs not too hard. My favourite prof this term.
Megan was the lab coordinator for the class, so I didn't see/hear much from her that semester but any videos I did see of her she was super friendly. Some lab preps were a tad difficult so I strongly suggest starting on them the day of or day after they come out. The labs were more relaxed, and TAs were more than willing to help out.
Megan was my lab instructor for BISC101. Overall, she made the course way more fun and interesting and her "pre-lab talks" were very nice. I could tell she cared for us and our wellbeing, especially given how weird everything is online. The lab portion of the course was alright... Not my favourite, but it wasn't bad either! Megan was awesome :)
She's amazing, caring and kind. Her labs help explain the course material and she gave the option for bonus marks rather than betting everything on the final exam. The homework isn't so bad, seeing how you have a week to do it. Then during class time, you get to work on an extension of the lab with your group. She explains things well.
Dr. Barker was the most interesting professor I have had so far, she cares about her students and is passionate about biology. I wish I had her for more classes.
Dr. Megan is an awesome professor. She really cares about her students and is really easy going. The labs are not too complicated. She tells fun stories at the beginning of the class. Overall a really nice person and an awesome professor.
Megan is a nice prof, caring, and really likes feedback so she can improve her teaching. However the course content itself doesn't really match with the lectures going on in BISC 101 lecture. I had her for the lab portion and she was nice but the lab exam was rushed as hell. 8 questions with like 4 parts was legit death. content is easy
Ok first off, as a person she is amazing with good teaching abilities and seems very caring. HOWEVER be careful in her class, it may seem easy but she unexpectedly hard scales the class. 86% was a B at the end even though her grading scheme clearly mentions A- to be 82%.She made the A- range to be the B range and A range to be B+. Barely got an A-
Good proffesor but does use grade scaling religiously, in a bad way. An A- turned to a mid B. I haven't experienced scaling like this before by any proff, its usually only couple percent scaled up or down in other courses. No heads up either like hey you are about to drop 2 grades by end of course at 84%. Atleast give us a chance to improve.
Although she was always quite helpful in class, the way she scaled the grades was ridiculous even after getting perfect on pretty much everything I got a B+, which is quite irritating because this class was not easy and required a lot of hard-work. I would avoid taking this class with her if you actually care about your grades and cgpa.
Megan is passionate for biology and cares for her students, however her lecture slides do not cover the majority of what is testable. Lectures are very slow paced and not many concepts are covered within the given time, there are too many group activities and slow I-clicker questions. Instead it is expected to read all of the "weekly readings".
Energetic and uses lecture time well, focus is placed more on building on the readings than retreading them. She provides a lot of study material to prepare for tests and lectures and is refreshingly transparent about what's going on behind the scenes. There are boring points in the course itself but that's more on the material than her.
Cant teach so she tells everyone to read the whole textbook. Lectures are pointless but theres Iclicker. She always talks about how she prioritizes teaching but the class average is a C+
First of all, do not take this course with her if you are not ready to read. I taught myself 95% of this course, by reading the textbook and doing practice questions. Lectures were useless and I only attended to get my iClicker marks. Megan cannot teach, class time was wasted on clickers and "discuss with the person beside you."
Dr. Barker is a great prof! She's very understanding, extremely helpful during labs, and always explains things clearly. The final exam for the lab portion was based completely on the labs done during lab time and on the lab manual given at the beginning of the semester. She's very understanding if you hand something in late, which is nice.
Megan is great, a lab with her was a dream come true. She is so caring.
so baddie nice
Megan was a great prof for 101. Her lectures are built around engagement, so showing up and doing the i-Clickers is definitely a must. It can be challenging balancing everything that needs to be done for this course at once, but if you keep up, do work as it comes and really try to understand - (not memorize) - you'll do great with her!
Hi all, I'd say to you don't take this class. She is a very difficult prof to deal with. She says one thing and brings another in exam. The slides are just pictures not helpful. Does not explain well. Only a lot of participation. Don't take with her.
she cannot teach so she makes us read like over thirty pages of notes every single class. class time is wasted by her saying “talk to your partner” like can you just teach us something?? and don't even get me started on the iclickers. they are so useless, they don't help at all but you need to show up or you don't get the marks. dont take her class
Cannot teach, she does this feedback about the course thing every week where we spend 30 minutes on it, and yet she doesn't even take the feedbacks seriously, you're gonna be so confused in class if you dont read 20+ pages she assigns due next day. Don't get me started with pre class quizzes. Don't take the class with her
her tests are way too long for a fifty minute period. it takes her 10 minutes to get everyone settled and hand out the test and then she yaps for another five minutes. the multiple choice questions are worded so weirdly and the grammar is off on so many questions. you'd think that since she's white her grammar would be better, but it's not.
Tests are ridiculous, 50 MC along with 36 points worth of long answers. The test is to be completed in 50 minutes. Do not take this class with her if you can help it. During lectures Megan fails to teach properly. Megan is late and untidy nearly everyday.
She claims her tests are fair but it's not, you need to do 60 questions (which is mc and written) under an hour, the ta's for that class also pmo, tutorials are useless, her grammer is so bad u don't understand the questions on the test, the slides are useless its all pictures, lectures are basically pointless, don't take the class with her
Class time was wasted by discussing clicker questions with the person beside us. The lectures don't cover much info, she assigns weekly readings and you have to self teach yourself. sample test questions were kind of helpful.
She's always late, and there is so much pre-reading to do. Almost every lecture, she is a pre-reading week behind, or she doesn't even teach what is on the pre-reading. We have these weekly journals that don't even benefit you. She's nice and makes us engage with others, but being nice doesn't make you a good professor.
She likes to think of herself as being relatable and kind to students, but if she really did understand students; she would not assign so much work. You have to do these reading guides every week and teach yourself, lectures are very unhelpful and boring. I don't know how she got all these high ratings.
She does not know how to teach. She should go back to teaching only the lab portion of the course.
Currently taking her class — she's very kind and knowledgeable, but not the easiest to learn from. Her slides can be unclear, so you'll need to teach yourself most of the material. The reading guides help, but the tests are tricky and require a strong grasp of the content to do well. Overall, she's a nice person but not my favorite professor.
Her lecture is completely useless. Every week we are wasting time sitting in her lecture to discuss question which the content she didn't teach us yet. She just made you read the entire textbook by yourself and basically study by yourself. However she loves to hear feedback from students by making us write this pointless weekly journal.
Instead of making her students do weekly feedback journals, she should just take a look at her rating here.
Her lectures are pointless and a waste of time, I don't know where she pulls half the question on her exams from. Assigns way too much reading from textbook and makes it really unclear how in depth we need to learn things. Overcomplicates the entire course, I recommend avoiding a class with her.
Taking her class this semster. She's a very energetic teacher but her lectures are almost useless when it comes to the second midterm. The lecture material was in the midterm, yes but her questions were very confusing, she also crammed this semester and barely went through much of the material that was in the second midterm. Overall not that good.
Dr. Barker is a great person, but not a great professor. In simple terms, she can't teach. Her lectures and weekly feedback journals are a waste of time, the pre-lab work is time-consuming and most of your studying will be out of class. The ppts are nearly impossible to study off, and the labs don't prepare you enough for the exam.
Class is a waste of time, the questions she puts on the written portions of her exams are always so extra compared to the material taught (sometimes stuff we have never even talked about). The questions always feel like a trick because they could all be right but which one is the “most” right…
this class is just the worst. majority of what is on the test is not covered in class. if it is, she goes over it for 5 minutes. the rest of the class consists of "talking to your neighbours". bro. avoid if possible. she sucks and lowkey I think she's racist.
she's about to cram a whole month of material into one week bc she wasted too much time making us talk to our partners. nice person but horrible at time management. avoid if you can.
She's actually so nice, but she's one of the hardest profs I've had in a long time. I don't understand what gets done from group discussions, weekly journals, or just not teaching. Exams are hard as hell, we're not phD students, so why are we being tested on things that are irrelevant? Idk avoid if you can, nice lady, but will screw your gpa over
Avoid if possible.
Materials on test is nothing we learned in lectures
Look, she's a nice professor and shows clear passion in her teaching. However, that doesn't excuse her from the fact that her tests are utter bullshit. Material covered in the lectures, which is crammed because of excessive "discussion" doesn't reflect what is actually being tested. Also, her dog is a massive distraction and should be left at home.
Avoid her at any cost, worst professor i ever had. The lectures are useless you will have no idea what to expect on exams they are out of no where and so hard. Also, the tutorials are bullshit TA doesn't even know what and how to teach and have no idea what is going on in the course. She should stop teaching and her dog should stay at home.
She's a nice person, but honestly one of the worst professors imaginable. Her tests are nothing like what she teaches in lectures. The questions are super complicated. The weekly journals and group discussions feel completely useless. The time she gives for tests is also really unfair. Please avoid her class if you care about your gpa.
Please avoid her class if you care about your GPA.
Avoid her class.
She is the worst prof ever. Decently nice but that doesn't when your grades and gpa are on the line. You can study your hardest, use every technique and still get below average. Averages are low 60s every test with only 5 people receiving 90-100.
One of the worst profs I've had at SFU. Constant “talk to the person beside you” during class instead of actually teaching the material. I have taught all of this course to myself. Her class averages for exams say more about her teaching than student performance- test material is nothing like the lectures. Avoid if you care about ur GPA.
The professor's teaching style made the course difficult to follow. Lectures often felt unclear, and key concepts were not explained in a structured or simple way.
Not the worst, but the stuff she teaches in lecture isn't related at all to her tests. It sucks because attendance is mandatory. She's clearly very passionate about what she teaches but does not teach well at all. Her labs aren't too bad though. Absolutely need to talk to TAs or go to office hours if you plan on getting a good grade.
I have never put so much time into a class and done so poorly. This class made me rethink my whole life. Would not take if you care about your GPA. Claims tests are fair but it's a self taught course and tests are unpredictable. ALOT of unnecessary quizzes, lab prep, journals. Not worth your happiness. Run while you can, not everyone has that luxury.
Megan is nothing more than an undergrad herself if it wasn't for the textbook—which carries the course more than she ever could. Every week she sends out a two page document that lists the ten thousand chapters that need to be read prior to class, all so that she could make slides with zero information and assign two quizzes + one journal weekly .
do NOT take her if you value your GPA. I love bio, studied a lot, thought I understood the material, only to have nothing we talked about in lecture on the exams. everything she structured was very pointless in my opinion.
Spends the first half of class yapping about things that no one cares about and only brushes over the important stuff in the last 20 minutes. An overload of pre-class/pre-lab quizzes every week, + the pointless weekly journal that doesn't help you in any way. Prepare to teach yourself EVERYTHING. Absolutely useless professor. Avoid at all costs.
Megan seems like a wonderful and passionate professor, but she doesn't structure her lectures well. The only reason I went to the lecture was because of participation marks(which are pointless if you're confused about half the material). She does way too many "discuss with the person beside you,"and it leaves no time for a topic overview. Not worth it
Get ready to read a LOT, and prepare to teach yourself everything.
Very passionate prof, makes class engaging and fun. Work load is fairly large, but the material necessitates that. Would highly recommend.
NEVER EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HER THIS IS UR WARNING!!
Professor Barker is an incredibly passionate and kind professor. She cares about engaging the class during lectures, is always open to feedback, and is super accessible for questions. There is quite a bit of reading, but her lectures focus on applying that reading in practice questions, which works for some, but maybe not others.
If you're not religious, well you better start pick one and start praying. Megan's lecture slides are inefficient enough to cover ANY study material for midterms and exams; she expects students to know the entire textbook by heart. Yeah she's friendly and kind but that's not the point, we're paying for this education so I'd expect a good education.
the tests are completely new things never seen before. Her lectures consists of her telling us to talk to our peers about what we think the answer might be. her slides are all pictures and no actual notes. she is not teaching you anything and has weekly journals which are so time consuming and not even helpful with the class itself. avoid class!!!!
It's so bad I'm actually just sitting here laughing. Like how is she getting paid for this LMAO
Please avoid her class. Worst professor ever. Too many course journals which are completely useless. The test concepts are different than lectures and it takes forever to get through all the pre-class readings.
Lectures are useless, you basically teach yourself everything, she's is always behind. I literally don't know how she is a prof. I'm not denying that she is a great person, but that doesn't make up for how bad she is at her job. I just want to be done with this class already.
Do not get me wrong, she's a kind person. Except, there is infinite pre-readings, weekly journals, lectures really don't help with the textbook and exam material. If you want to take this course, prepare to become independent, because you will be teaching yourself everything.
worst professor ever, doesn't know what she's talking about. too much group work, cant teach for the life of her, her dogs annoying asf big distraction, thinks it'll help us cus "cuddling with animals helps with stress bs", like YOU and YOUR DOG CAUSE the stress? dont ever take a class with her. I could care less if she's a nice person, she sucks
A disgrace to all professors, how are you here? She teaches absolutely nothing and expects you to know the entire textbook. Her lectures are useless, and her dog barks the entire class. If you thought you were good at bio before, think again, cause you're not. Even if you study all day, all night, you will barely pass. Just pray you get a good TA.
I honestly don't know how she is a professor. Her lectures are so useless and you have to teach yourself everything. The lecture slides are bio12 level and the test is far more complicated than you can imagine. Not to mention there are so many pre-class work you have to do before each lecture including a very useless course journal.
i'm paying like 4k a year to teach myself everything in this class. megan absolutely cannot teach, her time management is horrible and she brings her dog to classes after people tell her theyre allergic and it barks and she pretends to be annoyed. my ta teaches me more in one hour tutorials than her three hour ones and she gets paid way more. js no
do NOT take this class with her. shows "cute animals" during the horrid tests she gives us to "relieve stress" as if thats gonna change the monstrosity of the test she gave that has nothing we learnt in class. lecture slides are all pictures and expects us magically know everything from the hundreds of textbook readings she assigns like be so fr.
Yall know that scene in mean girls when Regina is writing in the burn book? Yeah, that all I have to say about this professor.
I was praying to Jesus she was a good professor, she made me lose my faith in the lord.
So unrealistic that I am paying $500+ for a course only to end up self studying the entire textbook. Other classes actively have 20-50 slides that ACTUALLY contain material that is on assessments and are also material heavy, so there is no reason why Megan cannot do the same. There needs to be a lot of reflecting for better teaching and learning.
Do yourself a favour never take her. Ridiculous i payed $4000 for this only course as an international and she is so bad at her job. I wish i could have my money back
She does not know how to teach; her slides are very shallow, and you can't really study or learn from them. You have to do so much reading every single week, and all she does in class is test your pre-reading knowledge.
This course has been very underwhelming and very ridiculous. I have no clue as to why she made us throw paper across the lecture hall during exam review. Why are you making the custodians' job even harder than it is? She expects everyone to know the textbook in and out like its ABCs and assumes everyone had a PhD in biology. Save your sanity.
genuinely hate her with all of my heart. her slides look like they were pulled from a kids book + have nothing of note on them. stupid fking preclass quizzes/journals every fking week + those GODDAMN iclickers. in love with "talk to the person beside you!!" stfu tests do not correlate to taught material AT ALL. she just yaps n yaps abt random sht.
Don't do it
no comment. dont do this class
If we get 3 hrs to write the final exam then give us 3 full hours why only giving 2 hours to complete 60 questions. It doesn't even made sense and plus it was so hard something we never learned in class.
Good professor engages with students very well
she is the worst prof i have ever had in my entire life. she makes us do weekly readings from the textbook and makes us read like a gazillion pages and we never know to what extent we need to learn the info. then, during lectures, she does not teach anything she just makes you talk to people around u, then she makes us do course journals every week
Save yourself and never do this course with her. As she will never teach anything about what to expect on the test and you are on you own.
First off, why was the exam time halved/shortened drastically?? It was stated that we would have 3 full hours to work on the exam but we were actually given 1 hour and 30 mins to work on the actual exam while another 30 mins for the group component. This is so unacceptable and frustrating. If an exam says it's 3 hours, I'd EXPECT it to be 3 hours.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. Megan seemed more confused than me throughout the semester. She doesn't teach anything while assigning over 30 pages of pre reading. The whole lecture consist on her getting us to “discuss” with the people next to us. Don't even get me started on her course journal and feedback atp she really needs to take that feedback.
Her dog could teach better.
If the schedule says we get 3 hours to write a final exam, then we should get the full 3 hours. Not 90 minutes.
I don't think that Professor Megan was bad so much because the half questions from bubble questions were taken from the canvas online quizzes or iclicker. You should do all online canvas quizzes and her mock tests for every midterm and especially finals because it'll help you. The main problem is 90 minutes for exam that was unfair!
She is bad at her job no matter how sweet she tries to be but can never teach. We pay fee to be taught not to have a sweet person to talk. She didn't teach us a word the whole semester like 1% from 100%
What for the reason to give us only 1:30 hr to do the final exam when the exam schedule literally said 3 hrs. Thats so so unfair what does she think we are some kind of machine to think and do 60question with several parts in 1:30hr.
My worst experience couldn't tolerate her. She should actually see these feedbacks and maybe work in future.
In my opinion, Megan Barker is mediocre. As a person, she is welcoming and nice, but when you go up to her to ask questions, she's confused. Her lectures were mostly useless, and she forces iClicker questions, making it mandatory to attend as they are a part of your grade. Course-wise, love bio but I learned more from the textbook than Megan. MID
Every lecture wasn't worth the commute. I had to hope for the best with every test, and thank goodness it came through. Can't lie, the labs were decent. The group project is a huge NO. For lab, create a group with people that can actually COMMUNICATE. Megan's slides consist of iClicker questions and a bit of information. Don't rely on the slides.
Dr. Megan is a nice person but doesn't teach any content and tends to waste time of lectures through discussing and very disorganized. It's a textbook focused course as it's the only way to learn. Both midterms she didn't give the students time and cut the final time in half. The lab exam had 8 stations for 5 mins each which made many not pass.
she is a good person but her lectures are very unhelpful . Nothing from lectures is on exams and all you will learn is from the pre readings which takes all your time. The course journals has no point, very time consuming. Try to avoid if possible. There are so many things you need to do each week, so don't fall behind.
Megan is a kind/enthusiastic about teaching but is not is not good at it. She rushes and this class is very reading heavy with avg 30 pages a week. On the final exam we were supposed to be given 3hours for the exam but she split the test in 60 minutes solo and 30-45 minutes with groups. So gave us half the allotted time for finals that sfu said.
She is a mediocre teacher. Very unclear about what the wants to teach and waste of time. Spent a lot of time going on side tangents about other things. She is not good at teaching as you learn more from textbook than her. You spend hours on the reading to have proper reading comp.
Cares about biology a lot but is not good as a teacher. You can sit through and entire lecture but if you did none of the pre reading you won't understand anything. She wasted my time and will probably yours as well. It was mediocre of class due to her specifically. Even the TA's didn't know what to do. They tried helping but confused students more
