Lectures are very boring and unhelpful to learning material. Attendance is not required nor necessary. Be prepared to teach yourself chemistry. 3 exams + cumulative final. Exams are extremely hard.
She talks very fast and tends to go through practice problems real fast. My rec: Do the tests with friends/classmates (tests are online). I did mine with people that I met during the discussion class. be prepared to spend hours on OWL just completing assignments.
Bowles is WAY too fast of a speaker. I think over half of the students in this lecture stopped going because of how unhelpful the lectures were. Very stressful and goes through things extremely fast. The class itself is very homework heavy and the labs can be stressful if you don't prepare. All of the exams and homeworks are online though.
She does not go over the concepts well, and instead, she just does calculations (doesn't explain what she's doing or makes it hard to follow) and half of the time she gets it wrong. The course however is a lot of homework, and about 30 assignments are due at the end of a month cycle. The HW I learned most from.
I literally got an A in this class by going over the content myself, she is not very good at explaining concepts. Expect to spend an absurd amount of time on the OWL assignments, you're better skipping lecture and focusing on the OWL content. She gets a lot of stuff wrong herself and I am so surprised that SDSU hired her to be honest.
she talks really fast and literally gets stuff wrong...
Loves wasting time, the lectures contribute nothing since the entire class is based on owl, lab flow, and top hat grading for them
You should be able to teach yourself chemistry because she's not very helpful. She talks so fast and doesn't teach any of the material, she just does the calculations without explaining. Also it's very hard to reach her. This is a hard class conceptually and the chem department here is already difficult enough but her contribution isn't helpful.
This class has its pros and cons. All the exams are online, but tons of OWL homework. Attendance is mandatory, but she does not teach well. She talks fast so it is hard to follow, and there has not been an extra credit opportunity yet.
It is truly painful to sit in Megan's lecture. She cannot go more than 2 words before saying “um” or “uh”. Majority of the class never showed up to lecture because it is so distracting and you wouldn't learn anything anyways. All tests and homework are online so the only really “hard” part of CHEM200 is your lab, try to have a different lecturer.
Like the other reviews said, after the first few weeks people completely stop going to lecture, me being one of them. Prof. Bowles is kind, but she goes over things super fast, and often times gets things wrong which would confuse me more.
She was an awful lecturer. I taught myself almost every concept we covered. She was not easy to access. It took her 2 weeks+ to answer any emails, and the few times I tried to go to her office hours she wasn't there. She also was still lecturing new material on the day of the final.
Lectures were hard to go to and tests were hard. But the homework was clear and easy to follow, also discussion felt like I could do it at home on my own, instead of in a classroom on my own.
While the course work is manageable her teaching is a bit confusing honestly found myself teaching myself. She also seems unorganized with her own slides and constantly makes small mistakes in her own problems.
Honestly, this class wasn't super difficult. I actually likes that this professor included lots of example questions in her lectures, but she is a super fast talker and the class is very fast paced, so get ready to write notes fast.
She seems like a sweet person but as a lecturer it's obvious that there is too much material to get through that she has to talk SO fast and not go over anything. I didn't learn a single thing out of a lecture. I recommend that you study from the aktivs hws + seek out outside help if you want to do well. The Ta's sucked and Lab flow is annoying.
dont do it
The reviews pretty much sum her up as a professor. She does seem like a very sweet professor but she talks way to fast and makes many small mistakes constantly. The speed she goes is very fast yet somehow we are constantly "behind". Overall not to difficult to pass but it will take a bit more work. Seek outside help for sure.
genuinely how did she get this job.
She seems like a really nice person but she's horrible at explaining things. What she "teaches" in class is just a small fraction of what you actually have to know for the homework and tests, so read the textbook.Honestly, theres really no point in going to lecture because slides and lectures are both posted, not that that would even help you.
She says "um" or "uh" every other word and gets her own practice problems during lecture wrong. She also does not teach the material that she tests on very well and rushes through lectures claiming we are behind every day.
Absolutely terrible lecturer, didn't even mention a test until a few days before, didn't explain rules for test until day before. Super unorganized.
Worst professor I have ever had. Did not mention the test until a few days before. Gets her own practice problems wrong. Does not know how to teach. I aced CHEM 100 and felt very confident, completely failed the first test of Bowles'. She should not be allowed to teach.
Can't teach and gives terrible exams.
Evil class
Average grade on tests being an F should tell you something.
Take with a different professor if possible. Whole class is a complete mess.
Do not take this class if you can avoid it. Her lectures are awful, she constantly makes mistakes and moves far too fast for any human to be able to effectively take notes. She only does office hours on Zoom which I think is nearly pointless. You can get by if you've taken chem100 and read the textbook, but I don't recommend this professor.
She seems like a sweet person, but as soon as she gets in the classroom it's impossible to learn anything from her. She says um and uh every two seconds. She makes mistakes in her own problems. As a 5 credit class it is very unorganized with lab flow, aktiv, top hat, and canvas. Only way to pass the class was with online tests.
The reviews are accurate. Her constant ums and uhs make it almost impossible to learn from her. She seems socially awkward, constantly pacing back and forth and never addressing the class, I honestly get nervous for her. Doesn't seem like she even likes to teach, and it's clear she doesn't know how. Everyone I know failed the first test.
Would not recommend at all. Lectures are often behind on content, Homework and Exam Reviews on TopHat are badly structured, and in-person Exams are ATROCIOUSLY unorganized and chaotic. Grading is also very inconsistent and even the TA's are unsatisfied with the course's structure. Proff. Bowles is nice, but cannot manage such a big course.
they switched to in classroom testing and she got a reality check that nobody knows whats going on. in person testing is stressful and extremely unorganized. this class is awful and unfair. absolutely AWFUL. unfortunately the other professor is not better by any means. this course is a disaster. goodluck
This might be one of the worst professors I have ever encountered in my life. Her lectures make no sense and she messes up on her own material. The average of our first test before the curve was about a 40%. Unit test organization is awful, taking major tests on your phone in person. Avoid if possible, save yourself and your GPA.
Avoid taking if possible.
Good luck even understanding what she says, the only information I retain from her useless lectures are the amount of uhh and ums she manages to fit in a sentence.
She is genuinely one of the worst professors I've ever had. The ONLY way to pass this class is to teach yourself every. single. piece. of material. She constantly contradicts herself, messes up her own examples, and goes at a very fast pace. You're expected to understand complex concepts but are not given the tools to do so. Also exams are a mess.
Im not a big fan of megan bowles.
shes not a very good teacher
Can confidently say she is the worst teacher I've ever had
Horrible professor, even worse lectures, and terrible exam organization. Don't ever take this class if you can avoid it.
She messes up her own practice problems in the notes.
She should be fired.
Megan is genuinely such a bad professor, she's nice but really bad at lectures, she doesn't know herself what she's teaching, the entire exam portion of class got is so unorganized. Don't take her, the class will stress you out too much. If you take her good luck!
Talks way too fast, can't go 3 words without saying “umm” or “uhh”, exams were terribly administered and disorganized, she constantly messes up during lecture and has to check her notes for the right answer creating more confusion than learning, students averaged 40% on exams, seems like a nice person but being a professor isn't for everyone.
Don't take her
Does not prepare students well for the very difficult tests given, lectures are not helpful and she doesn't explain material in a way that makes sense. There are mistakes in the slides and the exam is much more difficult than all the practice problems. Class average on the first test was a 60% AFTER the curve (originally was around 40-45%).
The worst professor I've ever had her exams were awful and she forgot her own material. Overall I would not recommend her to anyone lectures are impossible to understand and I don't think she even knows what she's talking about.
Worst professor. Doesn't even know her own material. Test went over material we were not taught in class. Would not recommend.
Very unorganized during tests, average is scarily low for almost every test. Everyone I know has an issue with this professor, she is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. Doesn't seem to care about the students, material taught is completely different than what is tested on.
It was the absolute worst experience sitting in the lectures. She did not even teach and the organization for the tests was abominable. If you can, do NOT pick her as a class.
Megan Bowles is a horrible professor. THAT is all.
Horrible, worst professor ive ever taken
Terrible. If you thought the guy was bad, tbh she's just as bad. she gets her own problems wrong, ik everyone makes mistakes but it's literally every problem. goes super fast so we can't comprehend anything. Exam days were so unorganized. The fact that the avg was a 40% should be saying enough
Alexa play "Get the Gat" by Lil Elt
Worst professor I have ever had. Considering how much I'm paying for this class I should be able to take her to court.
Thought she would be a good professor at the beginning of the semester, but she's very hard to access outside of class and prepares no notes, only speaks at the front of the room and expects you to write notes. Terrible time management and I genuinely felt lost during lectures. Exams are absolutely terrible and the organization is appalling.
She just really isn't a great teacher; she doesn't prepare us for tests and then is surprised when we don't do well. She rushes through lectures yet is still severely behind, which I feel doesn't make sense. The way she structures her tests is inconvenient and sets her students up for failure. She's also hard to reach for help. Bad experience.
She is the reason the chemistry department is going down.
Yes the class is pretty difficult. If you put in time and study the tests are easily passable. Some people just don't want to put in the effort and blame all their struggles in the class on the professor. There's no reason to be getting like 30% on these tests.
She should be teaching 9th grade chemistry, not a college level general chemistry class. Makes mistakes on every single problem, goes super fast, doesn't explain anything, expects us to know everything, and very bad organization during exam days. Don't punish yourself by taking her class, it's painful. #MeganOut
she says um 500 times in one lecture and never even mentions an exam not even the class before it. hella unorganized and fast asf lecturer
Evidently inexperienced when it comes to large lecture style teaching, often going over examples and doing them completely incorrectly or not finishing them. Honestly one of the worst exam styles I have ever taken with plenty of room for academic dishonesty and inaccurate computer grading.
**Ignore the person that gave her a 5-star rating** But overall, don't take this class, rather take it online or somewhere else, since all of us basically have to teach ourselves all the material due to Megan's poor teaching skills. Exams 1 and 2 were a total disaster, I hope the chem department takes action.
genuinely what is this class. she's so bad at teaching and the testing environment is atrocious. save your stress because having to finish your exam in person with tons of people lining up or taking selfies is ridiculous
The way she runs her class is absolutely unacceptable. I'm not paying thousands of dollars for classes to have a professor who is clearly under qualified such as Megan. She gets her own chemistry problems wrong, asks if anyone has questions but ignores them when they raise their hands, and uses filler words like “um” or “uh” 20 times in a minute.
I went to class before the first exam and got a 45%, never went after that and got a 52% on the next exam. Honestly it just shows how bad her teaching is and how hard it is to learn from her. She doesn't explain the problems, she just does them and gets them wrong.
The only reason I passed was because the exams were online. She goes way too fast and gets stuff wrong. Impossible to reach outside of class. She should not be teaching this class with this many people. If you have to take this, do it somewhere else, save yourself. Nice person Horrible teacher. Best of luck
Horrible tests that are impossible to pass even if you know the material. Doesn't even know what she's teaching and constantly gets her own example problems wrong
The whole Chemistry department needs to be restructured and thought out to help the students instead of make it harder.
terrible teacher do not take
Please here me out: All of these complaints are from someone with an A in the class, so i'm not making excuses for bad grades everything is just fact DO NOT TAKE HER. She is by far the most hated professor i've ever seen. here's just a list of the B.S our class has had to deal
Megan is extremely hard to follow during her lectures. Her slides are messy, she jumps back and forth between slides, and she constantly makes errors, even on exams. Aside from her talking way too quickly to keep up, she also does not prepare students well for her exams. There are limited numbers of resources to help learn in this class. Beware.
Do yourself a favor and don't take her
Dont take megan, you should never take megan
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASEEEEEEE, never take this professor. I have taken 6 all nighters before all the exams and have barely gotten B's. I am not the only one. The homework are 250 questions long. And take at least 5 hours each without help.... Run away if you can.
She is tough and not clear when teaching. Very unorganized and has an inadequate teaching style. All tests are taken in person but online in class with little to no room to take the test. Very bad communication with students as well.
Megan is not as bad as everyone says. Her lectures are scattered and she talks to fast while not being good at explaining things. The discussion part of the course is completely unnecessary. Don't let the bad reviews scare you because the class isn't extremely hard, she is just a bad teacher.
bro, naw she is not it if you wanna go to med school.
Makes me feel like king von every time i step into her lectures and exams. I CANNOT, understand her and she always says "Um" after every WORD. It sounds like she's auctioning off items with how fast she speaks. She's super nice, but it's not worth your grade and time.
She is a good teacher, overrated and underrated, lowkey reminds me of Russell Westbrook right now the way everyone is trying to scapegoat someone instead of actually dealing with the things they can like studying
Messes up a lot of explanations on equations that's going to be tested so it's just confusing. Doesn't talk clearly says filler words like "um, and, so" a lot in the middle of speaking. Messes up tests and grades so it curves quite a bit. Also grading discrepancies so just follow up with your grade and stay on top of it so she doesn't mess it up.
Bowles is very unequipped to teach chemistry. She is notorious for being a God awful Lecturer, I have Sophomore friends who recall her babbling and pacing about the room, trying her pitiful best to teach a class of this size.3rd lecture of this class, she said "uhm" 435 times. I counted. Overall, easily passable, but you will lose brain cells.
Class ain't that bad. Bros just be mad that they have to study in order to succeed. It's not that deep. Study for the tests and you'll do fine in the class.
For the life of me, pls don't take this class if you're a person who asks the professor a lot of questions, she will not look up from her screen at all. She messes up some of the information-which is crazy-and she is all over the place. She also takes forever to respond back to emails and barely pays attention to see if people have questions.
Megan is the epitome of a 2 star teacher. She is below average but isn't as bad as some people make her out to be. She is definitely a scapegoat but fr has some problems. You GOTTA study and the TopHat tests are such a terrible idea I cant. If you gotta take her it is what it is. Just lock in and dont waste time feeling bad for yourself.
Worst class I've ever taken. Professor Bowles uses at least five platforms — including Activ, TopHat, Canvas, and Labflow — none of which sync, making it nearly impossible to track deadlines. She's inaccessible, unaccommodating, and nothing from lecture, lab, discussion, or exams connects. You'll need divine intervention to survive this class.
She is very unorganized during her lecture and is often wrong describing her own problem sets. She also talks super fast during lecture making it hard to follow.
aw haillllllll no bro save yourselves im sorry if you have to take her ...
Megan needs help. She is very nervous, and I honestly felt bad looking at her for most of the semester. It kind of made me sad. I don't think she deserves all the hate, but is obviously very unorganized. It's low key your fault if you fail the class because it's not hard, but poor poor Megan. This nervous women needs a hug. #savemegan
I have a decent grade in the class but it is mostly from outside studying and resources. Solely based off of lectures and sample problems you will be just as confused as she is. There is a lot of homework but only if you put it until the deadline. Also taking tests on your phone is not fun
One of the worst classes I've taken. The professor is extremely disorganized, constantly jumps between topics, and often gets things wrong, including practice problems, which is unacceptable in chemistry. Lectures felt improvised, and I left more confused than when I came in. Avoid this class if you actually want to learn, she cannot teach.
People are dramatic and its not that hard if you study at least a couple of days in advance and do lots of practice problems. I got As on all exams from studying about a week in advance and doing lots of practice problems. Megan's lecturing is not great, she talks fast and lectures are unorganized with her making mistakes when showing examples.
All I have to say is, shame on you, Megan. Through every class, in my entire life, that I have ever taken, Megan Bowels was the worst professor I have ever experienced. If you take this class, you will lose your will to live. I would not wish taking this class on my worst enemy, except Megan.
The formats of the tests make it very difficult to do well on the exams. The lectures are very disorganized as the professor second guesses herself and gets many of the questions wrong despite using her notes. It is very important to study a lot in order to pass.
so cool :) best professor ever
No. Just No.
This chemistry professor was one of the worst I've had. Their tests were chaotic and poorly organized, creating unnecessary stress. Communication was nearly nonexistent—they rarely responded to questions or clarified expectations. It felt like they didn't care whether students succeeded or not.
This chemistry professor had terrible communication—emails went unanswered, and instructions were vague or missing. Lectures were confusing, filled with constant stuttering and umms, making it hard to follow anything she said. The lack of clarity made learning nearly impossible and left students feeling lost and unsupported.
Bowles was painfully unlikeable. Lectures were unbearable, full of stuttering and examples that just made concepts more confusing. It felt like they were just winging it every day. Their attitude made a tough subject even more miserable.
Please just no, do not take her. She has no empathy for students and assigns homework as if we are working machines. You will be doing homework all day and have no time to study for exams
The tests were hard but since people did so bad she would curve all of them. During lecture she would say "I'll just come back to this one" or "shoot I think my notes are wrong". If the problems are this hard for you, you shouldn't be teaching! Go to the 4 hour review sessions before each test they are DEFINITELY worth the money!!!
SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Horrible class structure. Her TAs are unorganized because she doesn't know how to run a class. The TA overseeing the 9am lab session is so rude and unhelpful. I have no idea why she makes us rewrite 10 page lab manuals??? WHY is that necessary???? Do not take any class Megan Bowles is in charge of. Summer RUINED
My gosh. Please save yourself. This class is so much work and you lose points from any little thing. TA's are RUDE!! You will be doing work for hours.
This professor is terrible. Like actually terrible. I don't write reviews, but this prof is so bad I feel like she deserves one. For the midterm, almost no one I talked to got above 50%, the only good part about this class was that it was online. Labs were easy, but lab reports were formatted weird imo. Would only retake this class if it was online
Megan Bowles is the worst educator I've ever had. I feel sorry for Professor Huxford, the Chemistry Dept. head, who is deeply passionate, an amazing professor, and leads an extremely incompetent Chemistry department. There was no one else available to teach CHEM200 other than Bowles. SDSU needs to reallocate some funds to the Chemistry Department.
