There isn't a reason that any student who is getting an A in the actual Biology 141 class should be receiving a MUCH lower score in the lab. Aside from the lab not having any relation to the real course, the students are overloaded with unnecessary work and graded extremely harshly for no apparent reason.
Bio lab is a frustrating yet educational lab experience. There are many small things that make things harder than they need to, but if you just commit 1-2 hours outside of lab + 3 hours for lab per week, + stay on top of everything, an A is definitely possible. You do learn useful lab techniques that are applicable to biology-related research
Manageable workload, easygoing professor, and open to suggestions. Has a willingness to make sure that students fully understand the material.
Saw her 2 times the entire class for bio120. Never responds to emails and is hard to get in touch with. Grading is fine except the class, which is already set up weird is made more difficult by her teaching or lack there of.
The individual TAs are responsible for your lab grades not Megan Cole herself. So grading criteria depends on the TA you're getting. That being said, the class powerpoints as well as the instructional videos are essential for the 12 lab quizzes; classes can be cut short if your group knows what to do and the final is just new lab quiz questions.
Dr. Cole is an amazing professor, and she's very helpful at office hours. She also really cares about her students and will try to get to know you if you make the effort. She's also super nice and sweet. I think her reviews are poor because bio lab, but she's great for bio lecture.
lab wasnt that bad tbh. pretty organized and as you learn techniques it becomes easy. the final exam and practical was very hard however and the weekly quizzes are annoying and can be graded very meticulously depending on TA. sometimes homework assignments were very long.
scantron and practical final are cancer, especially the practical. TAs are generally nice but some are really picky graders. lab itself isnt hard but its easy to lose a lot of points on the homework and quizzes
The TA's are tough graders and they do not curve. The lab final- scantron and practical- are both very hard, and those aren't curved either.
Dr. Cole knows her biology and I really enjoyed her lectures. She's always available for help and very approachable, She's kind of strict, but if you put in work you will do well in her class.
The quality and difficulty of your experience in this course largely (if not fully) depends on the TA you get. I was fortunate enough to get a TA who wasn't a tough grader and who explained concepts very clearly. NOT everyone is as lucky in Dr Cole's labs. As for Dr Cole herself, she is a nice person but I wouldn't recommend her as a professor
Your experience pretty much depends on the instructor you get. BIOL142L was a lot better than 141L and tons of group work is expected. Final is fairly easy if you know the concept for every PowerPoints. Be sure to do the prelabs and review slides last class to prepare for the quizzes. Assignments could be graded tough so check the rubric carefully.
Dr. Cole during office hours can seem kind of distant, but overall I guess she's nice. I think the biggest factor determining your grade is not the instructor, but the group you assigned, as group projects are a big part in lab unfortunately. Conceptually, 141 and 142 are not bad. I hate C. elegans and counting them with a burning passion though
She's the best professor I've seen.
Dr. Megan is busy, but she never leaves her students aside. She is a responsible lecturer, though you can not learn so much in her lecture. Read the textbook and practice should be the most useful way of studying.
Dr. Cole cares about her students. She is easily accessible in office hours and also provides video tutorials for students prior to labs. She is an incredibly supportive professor and mentor. I've had many friends that she's encouraged to stay on their track despite unexpected grades. Go to her office hours just to talk - she's awesome
The switch to online made an already awful class HORRIBLE! Its almost as if she gains pleasure from giving several large assignments a week, then saying hope everyone is doing well ... very out of touch
Dr. Cole is amazing! She cares that we all succeed and learn in class. She may give more quizzes than other professors but that also means she can drop more giving you a better overall grade! She gives meaningful assignments which can also boost your grade. The class is also technology-free which I feel is conducive to learning with no distractions
Bio lab is very organized and Dr. Cole made the transition to online learning very nicely. She is organized and gives meaningful assignments. She is also very reasonable if you ask about a grade and is understanding when it comes to extensions as long as you ask before.
Dr. Cole's labs are well organized and run smoothly. The assignments outside of class are very fair, both in difficulty and length. The lectures she put together for the labs are informative and easy to follow. She is responsive if you email her and willing to help you out. Research isn't always perfect, but this class runs pretty well.
As a lecturer, Dr. Cole doesn't deserve all the low ratings from other students. If you're fairly diligent, you'll do just fine. Her questions and lectures are frequently confusing: all it takes to understand them is to ask. Just like any other class, do your readings and study for exams. While other professors had the final as 40%, she had 18%.
As the lab director, Dr. Cole seems to be overwhelmed by the responsibilities she has. Grading of lab depends solely on your instructor: there are no clear-cut guidelines for assignments like abstracts. Additionally, a late assignment (even by a minute) constitutes a zero in the grading book. Quizzes each week and long homework assignments.
Her class is pretty easy. She gives tons of resources to make learning easy in a time-effective manner. Reading the book isn't necessary at all. You will learn everything you need from the lectures. However, her exams are tough so make sure you know all the information thoroughly.
I really enjoyed being in Dr. Cole's class for a part of this spring semester. She is very accessible and knowledgeable about what she teaches, and makes sure to follow up the next class after doing additional research if needed - meaning she cares about what students have to say and what they want to learn!
You don't really interact with Dr. Cole herself at all in this class as they are led by graduate students. The class itself is pretty easy and mostly just busy work. Your grade is summed up by pre-labs that you do on your own and the labs that you do in groups in class. Online learning made this pretty boring as the labs are just word docs.
Dr. Cole is the best of the best for biology. Her lectures are a bit fast paced sometimes, but she is always available outside of class for help. Quizzes are relatively easy for a bio class and her tests are fair. The only homework is optional masteringbio and a small assignment once in a while. She brings her dog to office hours!
Dr. Cole is a great professor and is the head of the biology department. Her lectures are very engaging and she is always open to suggestions for how she could teach better. However, the quizzes are a bit hard. At first, you will think they are easy, then out of no where, BAM, they're hard! But her exams are not extremely hard. Highly suggest her!
lecture was in person this semester, lectures were pretty straightforward although sometimes she didn't explain concepts fully enough - open to questions though and overall sweet person! grade was mostly based on quizzes and exams, exams were like 65% of the grade they weren't terribly difficult but not suuper easy either.
Cole's in person lecture was definitely a gem in this year of COVID-19. She's very accessible outside of class and is a very nice professor. You won't get by on just pure memorization and you'll be expected to apply concepts and high level and I really had to work hard for my grade, but it was definitely worth it. Recommend taking her for Bio!
This class is really easy to get an A in especially since you can redo assignments if you didn't do well. The grading is really straightforward and my mentor was helpful in class too. The only problem with the class is that Dr. Cole and my mentor didn't respond to my emails for a lot of the semester. Other than that, it's a good class I recommend.
Dr. Cole is a good professor but for some reason changed her grading system this semester. Seems like she wasn't happy with everyone getting an A last semester in 141 so she made assignments harder. Lots of homework but not exactly hard. Hopefully she sees the reviews and changes the grading system back b/c that was bs.
Dr. Cole did change her grading scheme, but it still wasn't too difficult to get an A. Projects take a lot of time, but the grading criteria is pretty clear and not too hard to follow. Large projects typically had multiple resubmissions which helped.
Dr. Cole is very organized and sets up the course in a similar manner. Her pre-lab lectures are clear, and she is very logical/understanding if situations arise. She was also good at explaining difficult concepts. Although 142L is definitely harder than 141L, she's still great!
Just do your assignment and you'll be fine.
Easy A! She's also really nice, and very forgiving when it comes to grades. Althoguh grading depends on how tough your mentor is, it's usually pretty easy (she allows for resubmissions)
This is a comment more about my TA. PRAY THAT YOU GET A TA WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING! Mine had no idea what he was doing, and would confuse himself pretty much all the time. His feedback was contradictory. I think there needs to be better control of the TA selection process, or better training, or something.
Dr. Cole is kind and this such an easy, interesting class. Just do the work (you get multiple attempts) and you'll get an A. Grading varies across sections, but it was still fine even being in Dr. Cole's section so disregard it. Choose a time block that suits you (don't do 8 AM if you aren't a morning person, you WILL regret it).
Cole is an amazing prof! Head of bio dept so she knows what she's doing, and the best lecturer I've had at Emory. She has the highest score/GPA averages among profs so take her
This grade is more reflective of the course rather than Professor Cole as she does not directly teach the class but it is very important to note that your grade entirely depends on the lab mentor you receive. Some mentors are extremely nitpicky graders who dock points for "errors" they disagree with rather than grading by the rubric we are given.
This rating is more based on the class. The class was not as structured as it should've been. Grading criteria was unclear and there was a disparity in mentors' grading making certain sections harder than others. Also, pre-lab videos weren't really that helpful during lab and for post-lab work. The work within the lab was easy and relaxing.
Pre lab videos really help with understanding the labs. She also gives great feedback on lab submissions so it is easy to improve upon your work. However, the lab write-ups have a lot of components so it takes a while to write. Luckily, the person who writes the lab changes every week so you don't have to write all the time.
Never met Megan Cole lmao. The difficulty/ enjoyability is based on your TA and Mentor. I've heard so many complaints about other classes, but I had the best TA and Mentor who made the boring class as fun as possible. LOTS OF HOMEWORK but the overall class isn't bad. I do not recommend taking the class at night, you'll feel the pain.
Dr. Cole is definitely my favorite professor at Emory. Most people know her from the biology lab courses, but she is an amazing teacher for lecture as well. If you have the chance to take Dr. Cole for 141 or 142, DO IT! While all my friends were struggling in the class with other teachers, I breezed through this class. 10/10 recommend.
The lab was ok, I didn't find the steps particularly difficult. The homework is fair. However, there is a lot of inconsistency in how lab reports are graded because different mentors grade the lab notebook. Grades should be more standardized.
Receptive to students' feeback about lectures. Exams are easy. Quizzes are hard, but are at home and open note. Assignments are usually only in class. Knowledgable professor. Very kind to students and available in office hours.
Dr. Cole did a very good job of practicing the application of class concepts during lectures. She was very easy to reach and the few worksheets she did give ultimately were helpful for learning class concepts. Tests are pretty hard but doing the practice from LA sessions is a pretty good way to prepare yourself. Be careful on weekly quizzes!
She was super caring and kind, brought us treats and let us walk with her dog. Tests were easy if you kept up with the material. Quizzes were sometimes a bit challenging but open note. Only negative was that the class could have been better organized, but it wasn't bad at all and didn't inhibit my learning. Don't hesitate to take her!
Doesn't explain questions well and grades harshly, as well as takes the average of your quizzes after you retake them. That doesn't make sense. Especially since the quizzes are only a few questions like 1-3, which makes your grade terrible. Absolutely awful. If she explained the content clearer half the class wouldn't be failing her quizzes.
I really hope Dr. Cole realizes BIOL120 is for non-stem students. Her quizzes are incredibly confusing and difficult. She averages two attempts but so many questions are toss-ups you're left praying. Notebooks are graded by a "lab mentor" who can be good or bad. I already have a failing grade and Dr. Cole's inaccessibility doesn't help.
Averages your quiz scores without even explaining the correct answers. The lab assistants and mentors are left to shoulder the weight of her bad explanations of the course material. This is for non-Stem students. But she doesn't seem to understand.
She does not teach the lab and you never see her. This class is specifically for non-science majors yet many of us are suffering because of her pre-lab quizzes and post-quizzes, which are confusing, include typos, and are unsuitable for non-science majors. The lab is fine but we struggle a bit because the pre-quiz material doesn't prepare us.
Her pre-quizzes and post-quizzes are not suitable for non-science majors, whom the class is designated for, and they include typos. She doesn't run the lab and has yet to attend it. Many people in my class are failing due to the quiz material, and our lab mentor often has to re-explain concepts that her material doesn't properly prepare us for.
Non-science majors are struggling in this class even though this lab is meant for us(even my academic advisor called it 'baby bio' and assured me it is one of the best science labs for non-science majors). I always do my work but my grade is suffering due to my pre-quizzes and post-quizzes, which are not made for non-science and are confusing.
Doesn't teach the lab or the lecture, yet our grades are largely based on the pre-lab and post-lab quizzes that she assigns us. My mentor personally has had to re-explain concepts to our lab because her material doesn't adequately explain things in a way that makes sense. The lab is meant for non-majors; yet her material isn't structured that way.
As a non-science major I was advised to take this course for GER; her pre-lab quizzes and post-lab quizzes are not made for non-science majors and have greatly impacted my grade and it has been the most stressful class of my Emory career. She doesn't run the lab; you're assigned a mentor instead, yet her material is what makes your grade.
The course structure does not make any sense. Although it is a 1 credit lab, the workload is way to much.
Megan Cole herself does not teach the lab but rather the multitude of TAs in the bio department. Some TAs are good, some are bad. The assignments are available for resubmission up to 50% of the grade back. Postlab quizzes can be questionable at times. All of the work is group based.
You won't see Dr. Cole ever but if you want to reach out for extra help she is accessible. Your success depends on how harshly your TA grades are most of the time. You will never lose points on messing up a lab, most points are lost on the lab notebooks, poster presentations, and final group project.
The pre- and post-lab quizzes did not need to be as hard as they were. I never interacted with Dr. Cole, but your experience greatly depends on how harsh your TA grades. I felt my lab notebook grades were unfair sometimes; they should be graded with more grace in the beginning of the semester.
Gave way too many pre-class and post-class quizzes. Boring lecturer.
My lab lecturer was amazing! But Dr. Cole's pre and post-lab quizzes are wayyyy too excessive and hard. Even when I watched the videos they don't always give you enough information to know the answers to the quizzes.
Cole makes intro bio labs so unnecessarily tedious and quiz questions are often super unclear and just a pain to do for literally no reason. I honestly cannot fathom how one can possibly write such bad questions. I came to Emory liking bio, and these labs are making me hate it because 90% of the work feels miserable (and not because its hard).
The pre and post work is sometimes made to be intentionally misleading and is too difficult for no reason. Does not teach well. All work is laborious and tedious at the same time. Lab notebooks are graded inconsistently and rubric does not tell you what you need. Came in bio major; leaving chem major. Beware of her labs.
Amazing professor. She is amazing.
Best Proffesor I have had at Emory! Very accesible outside of class and her office hours are very helpful. Would definitely take her class again!
I really liked her as a person and could tell she genuinely cared a lot about her students and what she was teaching, but he wasn't a good lecturer. Her exams are VERY personalized and have very specific questions on things she says in class. They're not too difficult as long as you know what she wants you to know.
I took the BIOL 142 Lecture section and I really liked Megan Cole! She is a great lecturer and even with barely paying attention during lecture I feel like I learned a lot! She had her TA's take over about halfway through the semester and they def aren't as good as she is. But overall, I really recommend her for lecture!
Much better than Biol 141 lab in terms of content and grading scheme
Dr. Cole crafts the class using strict rubrics. Depending on your TA, you may have an easier or harder time in the class. However, if you do the pre-class work on time and actually pay attention to the lab notebook feedback, you will do well. Dr. Cole also is great about offering extra credit and usually grades inflate by a few percent at the end.
For 141L and 142L, there's a lot of pre-lab and post-lab assignments, but they're all a piece of cake if you at least pay attention in class and reach out to your TAs or groupmates. CERs are annoying, but follow the rubrics and you'll do fine. Class ain't hard, just a bit annoying every now and then.
Cole is very knowledgeable and is able to explain biology in simple ways. The only thing stopping me from rating her a 5/5 is that there is nothing extraordinary about her lectures and they're pretty basic.
Thanks to the Bio Lab, I quit my pursuit for biology major in the future. If the biology is like what Bio Lab teaches and requires, I would rather forgo my passions in Biology forever.
TA is what really matters, you never see Cole in lab. The lab notebooks don't have a rubric so just ask TA if ur missing anything before you submit. Can resubmit notebooks for partial credit back. Late penalties. Can get an extension anytime, just w/a heads up. Some labs are repetitive. No final but a bunch of pre/post lab quizzes. Labs aren't hard
BIOL 141L really got me questioning my interest in being a Bio major. I've never hated or been more annoyed by any class before this. It's literally torture every week. It's so bad that it made me considering switching my major to chemistry. P.S- the class isn't hard by any means it's just a bunch of insanely useless things that you're forced to do
Cole is never there, TA/GA is what matters. Got lucky with Emily Hill - super nice and genuinely wants to help! Grading is strict&resubmissions are averaged, so you basically have to do perfect in everything to get an A. Labs are repetitive but Cole's prelab videos are very detailed and helpful. Work is easy if you pay attention to videos/lecture.
Labs are completely taught by TAs, so I never saw Professor Cole in person. Biology lab is kind of reasonable as an intro course, but pay attention in class and do the pre and post-lab assignments well because it matters. The TAs grade harshly but are responsive if you ask questions, so definitely ask for help and go to office hours.
Pretty easy lab. My section was taught by Dr. Cole herself, and she was great. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit and the assignments are generally manageable, so getting a high grade isn't difficult. Only downside is that the lab notebook grading criteria is unclear.
She's an actual DIVA because there's no final for Biol141 OR 142L. Loved her pre-lab recordings, really explains concepts well. Actual grading is by your GA - get Emily Hill if you can bc she's the best. Cole's grading scale is strict but it's not hard to end up with an A because there's a ton of assignments and opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Cole is great! The lectures are straightforward and she gives homework assignments/worksheets that really help reaffirm your knowledge of the material. The assessments aren't terribly difficult and the learning objectives are always made clear. She releases lecture recordings and slides, and is very accessible outside class.
Well designed lab. There was no lab test, just a quiz after and before every class. An A is very manageable. Talk with your TAs as grading for the notebook was quite strict. I found that they were mostly willing to help out. Met a lot of cool people in lab and overall had fun. It's pretty chill so just do all your work and you'll be fine.
The class is NOT bad if you have a good TA. There's no final; you get multiple attempts at a lot of assignments, and none of the assignments were that time-consuming despite the volume of them. I took the lab without taking the lecture and never felt lost in the material. Overall, despite only seeing Dr. Cole once, was a good and low-stress class.
Your experience is dependent on your TA, Dr.Cole is never in class. No final, multiple attempts on all assignments. Kind of a lot of assignments but they're all short. Also, don't need to take lab with lecture, they're unrelated. Some lab days were annoyingly long, but usually you get let out early. Overall a chill class.
depends on your TA. feels like a lot of busy work but not hard at any means. there is no final which is great, and the experiments are pretty clear. if you have questions just ask your TA or undergraduate TA. pretty chill, but sometimes experiments dragged on. prepare to stay there the entire time usually
My TA was amazing and majority are. the class is fair. extra credit is given at the end but is minimal. if you do all the work ur bound to get an A/A-. ur group is everything. no need to prepare for lab just get in and work as a group. no final which is amazing. both ta's and dr cole are accessible outside of class. most days we finish early
A little unorganized at times but a good class. Almost every assignment can be resubmitted for half credit back so it feels impossible to get lower than an A- in this lab. Just show up and do the work, you'll be fine.
Good class, put in the work and you'll get an A. Only comment is that grading criteria is inconsistent across TA's, with some giving slightly different instructions. At least you can resubmit for half points back.
Sections are run by TAs. There's a lot of group-related work, so the amount of work you may need to do will really vary depending on how studious your group is. The lab feels pretty detached from the lecture, but as long as you do the work, you'll get an A.
Course learning experience is highly TA dependent. If you get a bad TA, you're kinda screwed with inconsistent grading on assignments and not clear enough feedback on what to do. Try your best on assignments and show up and you'll get an A- minimum.
Courses are EXTREMELY TA dependent. Be prepared to teach yourself everything if you get a bad TA and track down your TA for feedback since they don't always answer emails.
