Such an easy class. I dont go to class and i ace every single test. She puts what she lectures on the test pretty much exactly so i would recommend going through her lectures before the test and making a quizlet off of that to be successful. Shes pretty funny and nice and might not have the most interesting lectures but theyre not mandatory anyways
Very easy class! Never went to class and did fine. she posts all the notes online and gives you worksheets which are exactly what is on the test. Genuinely cares about her students and is willing to help you if you need it.
Class I took there were four grades and they were only exams. A lot of lectures that can be accessed online but I recommend showing up to class.
Dyer has a bad reputation for no reason. She has a dry sense of humor that can be hard to get sometimes, but she lectures well and always has examples or current events to support what she's teaching. Posts her lectures online. DO THE REVIEWS FOR THE TESTS AND YOULL DO WELL! only four tests - your highest one is weighted more than the others.
The class grade is only based on 4 tests with your highest score worth 15% more than the others. One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. I rarely showed up to class and just read the slides a few times before the test and made above a 95 every time.
Her lectures aren't interesting, but you don't really have to go. I ended the class with .5 away from an A but unfortunately she doesn't bump. Don't ask her for a bump or she will punish the class. For tests I would recommend doing her lecture reviews and reading the textbook and you'll be set. Overall, easy course, spend 4 hours studying night b4.
She does try to help her students by posting her power points online and creating worksheets. If there is a question on the worksheet over the textbook, generally the chapter highlights will have the answer. Study her exams and worksheets very well and you will get an A. She talks monotone, has dry humour, but does care.
People make Bs bc they don't go to class. She posts her lecture slides at the end of the week so just outline the slides during class and listen, then go back and fill them in. Do the review sheets and when it comes to studying, study the review sheets and read over your notes. Easy A. 4 tests no final, didn't get a textbook and was fine.
Went to class less than 10 times this semester and only studied the night before tests. She posts the slides that she reads to the class so there really is not much of a point in going to class unless you want to use it as your study time.
Easy class, good prof if you want to put minimal effort into the course. Dry humor during lectures, but you don't have to go often to do well. Showed up about half the time because slides are posted online. Review slides and do review sheets night before exam and you'll be fine. 4 test grades (highest weighted more).
Pretty easy class. She posts all powerpoint slides online at the end of the week so there's no real need to go to class all the time. Study power points and worksheets before the tests. Kind of awkward while lecturing but relatively funny so the lectures aren't bad.
This course is based on the 4 exams you have, but your best exam is worth the most points! I bought the textbook but did not end up reading it. Although attending lectures is not required, I feel as though it is more beneficial than any form of studying or cramming. She provides review sheets before each test which are quite helpful.
Better than the reviews say. Boring lecturer but knows her subject well. My best advice would be go to class at least once a week to keep up with the information. Study the review worksheets before the tests and go through the slides and you will be fine. Do not buy the textbook. She gave us extra credit.
listen this was one of the easiest classes i have ever taken. BUT LISTEN TO ME. dyer is probably the most boring prof ive ever had. she reads off the slides during lecture and then posts the slides.......... so dont come to lecture!! its pointless. i got straight 100s on tests bc the review she gives is very comprehensive but u will be so bored
This professor is so incredibly boring. During her lectures, all she does is read the slides word for word. She uploads the slides online so there is no point in going to class. She is also not very personal and friendly so asking her for help is fruitless. Take this class with a different prof!
Not as bad as the reviews say AT ALL. Take notes in class and do the worksheets she posts then it's an easy A. Lectures aren't boring if you take notes, but she does go pretty fast, but she posts her slides online. I recommend going to class every day even though a lot people will choose not to, but you won't have to put much time outside of class.
Basically a robot. Tests are make or break but not too difficult.
The material covered is simple to understand from the textbook (which you can get online for free), but her lectures are more than a waste of time. She has little to no lecture/public speaking skills and is rather unapproachable before and after class. There are definitely better options than Dyer.
Puts the slides on her website every week, attendance isn't necessary. She reads off the slides, and is kind of awkward. Study the slides and you will pass easy.
Her lectures are not the best. There is no homework which is great which means the grade is solely dependent on four tests. You don't have to show up to class since she posts all the slides online. She also posts study guides which are similar to the tests. Basically you study, you will get an A even if you don't go to class.
Professor knows what she is talking about, but isn't a natural born lecturer. You could probably do fine without showing up to lecture, but she occasionally throws a question on the test that you will only really on if you were present. Book and slides are best friends. Grade depends solely on 4 exams.
Actually the worst professor i've had at A&M. She was no help during office hours, didn't care to help her students better understand the material. TOO smart to teach.
Lectures are not mandatory and pretty dull, not really that helpful. Class is based off the four exams but do the review sheets and look over the presentation slides and you will do fine. I usually studied the day of and got B's on the exams.
Just about the easiest POLS professor you can have. I only went to class on exam days and made an A in the course. She lays out the information really well, and makes fantastic study guides for the exam. Studying for 3-4 hours the night before an exam almost guarantees an A. Perfect professor for this class; take her.
Dr. Dyer wasnt a bad prof by any means. She was a semi-awkward lecturer and it was a class of 300. The only grades in the class were 4 tests (plus a little extra credit). Personally, POLS isnt my strength, and I didnt test well and thats the reason for my grade.
The only grades were 4 tests but the highest grade is weighted higher than the rest of them. She wasnt a great lecturer and never really said anything in class that wasnt on the slides that she posts online, so I almost never showed up. I did end up getting a B but thats mainly because I dont really know how to study for history/gov.
Easily one of the hardest courses for any political science major. Had only 4 exams the entire year. All exams are 100% open-ended with a short answer and essay portion. Assigned 10 books to read over the term. Attendance is mandatory. Participation is mandatory. Unapproachable. Too smart to teach. Posts slides on ecampus, but not really helpful.
Dyer grades by 4 tests. Reading the textbook , doing the worksheets and reading her lecture notes, which are basically identical to her lectures is all you need to do to get an A. Class is superfluous. Tests are easy if you study hard for them and this class requires no effort outside of test weeks. TLDR: She's good and her tests are easyish
Solid choice. Professor Dyer's lectures are easy to understand, and it's obvious that she has devoted thought and care to each topic. If you pay attention and take notes, you should be fine. Textbook isn't used too heavily at all. Professor Dyer is remarkably approachable and easy to talk to, so don't be afraid to ask questions.
Your grades are pretty much all based off of her tests. The tests are based off of the slides, not really anything that was lecture only. She did offer an extra credit assignment, but don't ask her to bump your grade up aside from that. Overall, I enjoyed her course and would definitely take a class with her again.
Most of the exam content comes from lecture so I think it's easier to just go to class than figure out what's going on by yourself, but I was able to skip a couple Friday lectures here and there and was fine. The review sheets she posts are helpful for tests. Wouldn't bother with the textbook. 99% of grade is based on 4 tests so it is exam heavy.
This is one of the worst pols classes I have ever taken, and I am a pols major. She only gives out three written exams and has the most confusing grading criteria ever, that she doesn't even stick to. She is incredibly awkward and makes you uncomfortable for the whole class period. I would not recommend, take a different intro pols class if you can
Super easy A for 207! Her worksheets prepare you for the exams as long as you just do them. My high school gov was much harder than her class. Lectures are dry but I recommend going becuase otherwise it's too easy to get behind on such a boring class. Bare minimum should get you a B if you actually try it's very easy to get an A. Tests are key tho.
She posts her slides which are helpful if you need to miss a day or too, because the exams mostly have material from powerpoint slides. The weekly participation grades get old fast, but she drops two of your lowest scores. Exams aren't too hard. The textbook will help your grade but isn't necessary.
Prof. Dyer is very knowledgeable about what she teaches, but her lectures are just her going through the PPT slides, so attending class is not necessarily beneficial in my opinion. Also, she makes study guides for the exams which is great in theory, until you see that every test question is worded so differently and is unnecessarily confusing.
She's not a bad professor at all. Goes through the slides at a slower pace and they're posted online afterwards. The majority of your grade comes from the exams, so do well on those. She grades pretty fairly and there is extra credit.
Not a good prof. Her lectures are boring, as she talks like a robot. If you ask her questions she will be rude and tell you to read her notes/ textbook. Slides are posted online and she does give review sheets. Easy to pass, but you have to work for an A.
I don't know why all of these reviews are good, as I had the opposite experience in her class. First exam I made an A, & kept the same study habits, & my grades continued to fall (as did everyone else's). I ended up failing the final. All of her exam q's are super in depth & require much further comprehension of the material than she expresses.
I've been in this class for three weeks and the homework assignments alone are so incredibly hard and confusing they will just bring your grade down in the end no matter how hard you try on them. We haven't even taken the first test yet but the extra work she has added onto this online course is not only busy work but so difficult.
Professor Dyer is a really great lecturer; you can tell she's interested in political science and she occasionally engages with her students through Q & As. Her tests are pretty straight forward as long as you understand the information on her power points. Attendance is not really mandatory as well.
She gives WAY too many assignments (all busy work), her homework quizzes are impossible, and the tests seem easy and you take it without a sweat but then get your score back and realize you made a 60%...I'm a senior and know for a fact that a POLS class can be taught successfully without this much work.
Literally first week of online and she has swarmed us with work. Not to mention has done a terrible job organizing or explaining what she wants done within class. Several grades listed with no descriptions on them, leading you mindlessly wandering throughout the syllabus praying you figure out what to do. An awful prof, don't do this to yourself.
She thinks her class is super important and gives an insane amount of work for a 3 credit hour class. Good luck.
Her homework is so irrelevant to the exams and the actual practice you need for them. It takes so long and she gives you tons of long articles to read and the questions are obscure to answer based on what the article gives you. Its so annoying and it brings down your grade a lot.
I do all assignments in under 3 hours on Sundays. All you need is to pull up the pdf of the textbook (found online for free) and command/ctrl + f to find keywords. Exams are open notes, homework assignments are analyzing 3-4 one-two page articles. Packback is your standard discussion post assignment. Easiest class in college so far (senior year).
Most egregious professor I've experienced at A&M in terms of workload for something worth 1/5 of grade. This would be fine except the homework has nothing to do with the exams. I've spent more time attempting to finish homework than I've spent studying for exams. "Correcting" politically motivated articles shouldn't be a freshman course.
Homework assignments are more of a scavenger hunt rather than learning actually relevant material needed to score well on the exam. Weekly modules are mostly busy work. She fails to make clear what she wants us to learn.
This professor appears to believe her class is the only one. She gives you many articles to read on top of the textbook along with 3 Packback essay-like questions. She gives a ton of lecture videos every week. Lots of busy work.
Her lectures for my corona time were long and dry, we have a weekly module that ends with an extremely hard quiz. The test is open notes so if you take good notes you're guaranteed an A. She won't extend and is very strict and kinda sassy.
Professor Dyer considers her class of upmost importance, and assigns way to much work that is mainly analyzing articles rather than learning the actual material. She's very strict to the point where she doesn't allow extra credit and limits working with a group. Unless you like POLS, I wouldn't take her class.
Prof Dyer does a good job of providing the material but while her tests are open-note they are hard. Additionally, the quizzes- she calls it homework but its a quiz grade- are based off articles she gives you and the questions require deep reading and analysis. Definitely have to work for this class.
Dr. Dyer is great. Her lectures are clear and concise, the Packback posts are super easy (you just have to do them), and her tests are not very difficult (usually short concept questions). She drops 2 homework assignments and 2 Packback assignments. As long as you read the textbook, watch the lectures, and do the work, you should get an A.
She's terrible, does not care, her quizzes are irreverent and completely random and impossible to get right. Avoid at all costs.
I enjoy POLS & Prof. Dyer's witty personality, but this class isn't an easy A. There aren't live lectures this semester, so going through the weekly module feels like busywork. Tests are open note; you'll pass if you understand the material. HW takes a lot of time and is difficult to get a 100 on, but the articles for it are interesting reads.
Would rather take a razor scooter to the ankle than take this professor again. First of all, she thinks her class must be the only one we are all taking. The workload is unreasonable, then the quizzes. Oh the quizzes. Have fun guessing because even the correct answers which I HAVE PROVEN is "wrong" Absolutely a game to see who can guess best.
I took Dyer because she had lots of good reviews but I shouldn't have. For a simple class there is so much busy work. Homework takes forever and questions that I'm sure are right get counted wrong. Tests are open note and even when using her lecture slides, I'm still barely passing them. Not an easy A unless you're willing to actually take notes.
Heavy lectures with homework assignment that are irrelevant to the topic. The homework assignment is worth a big part of the grade yet, it is like a scavenger hunt throughout the different website reading. A lot of readings, lectures are very confusing but if you like politics then you might be okay...
Please do not take this POLS professor. The homework consists of participation quizzes, a quiz based on 5-7 articles you have to "scavenger hunt" through and analyze, and Pack Back posts, which are several paragraphs of answering questions + writing your own question. Quite a lot of busy work for a class where exams are 60% of your grade.
This class was AWFUL. I spent almost my entire week trying to keep up with the lectures, assignments, & reading material. She acts like her class is the only one we are taking. Her weekly homework assignments were the absolute worst- she worded them in ways to confuse you and was just tedious. I had to work very hard for my A...
What a college class should be like. Lectures are engaging, relevant, and interesting. Exam questions come from lecture material and textbook readings. The class is well-organized; expectations are clear. Discussion with peers is graded for completion credit. Professor Dyer cares about the material and her teaching style reflects it.
Personally, very difficult for no reason. Her homework is unnecessarily long and irrelevant, and for me were very hard to get a hundred on. Her tests were difficult and the way she worded certain questions on her assignments and exams always confused me. Would avoid at all costs.
DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. Do not take her. Unnecessarily hard homework not to mention too much time to complete, and even with hard work still received a failing grade. Test heavy, words questions weird so you do not understand the question and end up getting it wrong. Had to get a 100% on extra credit to receive a full 1 point. 2 point in total.
Comes off condescending in communication. Even when completing all of the lecture notes and homework assignments and reviewing thoroughly for the exams they were still challenging.
POLS 207 online was easy. Each week, there were 4-5 completion-grade writing assignments, a graded quiz based on assigned articles, and a completion quiz. It was possible to skip a few assignments without affecting your grade. The lectures were recorded (and unnecessary), so this class only took a couple hours per week. The textbook was not needed.
I took this class online. Every week there are modules with 3-4 assignments. Lots are for participation grades and a discussion every week. There is also a HW every week that is over serval articles and about 10-15 questions on each one. They arent easy but you HAVE to do them. Test are hard. Read textbook and study!
Not an easy A. Homework in my opinion is unnecessary and hard. The test is a lot of information and not easy. Need to watch and read text book. There are several completion grades and discussions( you have to post at least 3 different things each week) She post work one week at a time. Definitely probably easier profs to take.
Tons of work. Her exams are worded completely different than what you study so its difficult to understand. Work wise, it was more demanding than my anatomy courses. She is accessible through email and responds within a day of two. I was less than half a point away from passing.
Awful. I talked with a lot of classmates and we all agreed this class shouldn't have been made as hard as it was. Most of us including myself just needed this class as a core. Too much work, assignments not clear at all. Homework should've been easy but no. Please do not take this online class.
Pols 207 was online/asynchronous this semester, but Prof Dyer did a good job at organizing her course. There were modules posted each week, with around 5 lecture videos/slides, quizzes, discussion posts, and homework sheets. It could be a lot of work, but it wasn't hard. Tests were not too bad and were open note, so take good notes! Get textbook!
Lots of work with unnecessarily hard tests. Essentially, if you want to spend your week watching lectures, reading huge chapters, posting 3x on packback, and doing a whole bunch of completion credits and homework quizzes you will probably still get a B. More demanding than my actual core credits. if you can avoid this prof.
Tough reading quizzes weekly and quite an attitude
This was an easy, self-paced class that I took asynchronously. The tests were open note and straight out of the lectures which were well done. The biggest issue with the class was the amount of busy work assigned that counted towards a decent portion of the grade.
Nothing too difficult, rather just a lot of assignments. One module due every week. 4 tests that made up a majority of grade. Very communicative with class and easy to reach. Though I didn't really use the book, some sections were on the exams. If online, tests are open book and open notes.
In terms of homework, there was quite a lot of busywork; the workload was a bit much but wasn't too hard in terms of difficulty. Lectures were numerous but pretty informative and well organized, although the textbook was less forgiving. Exams were open note for my section. I felt that she gave us the necessary tools to succeed in the course.
Exams are a large part of your grade. That being said, the style of questions you see in this class are not the clear, in your face simple answers. You have to apply information given to you, and it is more difficult than studying can get you. Not the worst class, but not what I personally expected going into this class.
The entire course is ridiculous as a requirement, and you would think as something every student has to take, it would be easy. But no. She chooses to take her 20k/year salary and make her students miserable. This elective should not require you to spend all of your time studying. Tests in this course are extremely difficult and count for majority.
Her homework is difficult, you can miss a lot from not reading one word AND they have NOTHING to do with the exams. Her exams are even MORE difficult and she constantly has to curve because of how ridiculous she grades. She is the WORST. DO NOT TAKE HER. She is inconsiderate. She makes it to where this elective intro course takes up a lot of time.
Professor Dyer is very rude when you ask her questions. She's short with you when you discuss grades, and makes it to where you have to labor for a B. I don't even know how students make an A in this class without investing twice the amount of time a core class takes. Her homework helps in no way and the tests are the most difficult I have taken.
This class was ridiculously work heavy for an asynchronous class. There is so much lecture content and a lot of written assignments that take 30mins-1hr. The homework takes 1-1.5 hrs. Literally take any other prof if you can because all the others that my friends have taken were much easier.
what the heck Im really surprised by the bad reviews. exams are open note and fair. 3-4 assignments a week that take a few hours due to reading articles. Packback, a discussion platform, is a hassle sometimes. HW isnt difficult, just time consuming. HW is mostly for participation grade, if not you get 2 tries. Amazing clear and concise lectures.
Prof Dyer is a solid choice for POLS 207. Literally didn't open the textbook once. If you just listen to the lectures, you should be able to pass. I felt kinda bad for her because she didn't have any TAs or anything and had over 500+ students.
Dyer was a pretty great prof and super knowledgable. There is quite a bit of work that goes into this class, especially just for a class many take for the credit needed. Lots of homework assignments, completion grades and discussion posts. I only read the textbook a few times, but found it pretty unnecessary. She goes over everything in lecture.
An enormous workload for what the class is. Most of the lecture content is boring PowerPoint reading. Way more useful to just read the chapters and skip the lecture vids. The quizzes are the biggest pain cause the questions are arbitrarily derived from the massive articles you have to read. Dropped for gpa boost because I had to make auto ETAM
For an asynchronous class, I knew there would be a lot of work, but I was really surprised by how much there was to do each week. HW took a minimum of 1.5 hrs to do and the questions were all really obscure and easy to miss. I ended up dropping b/c I got C's and a D on the exams even though I studied and when I emailed her she didn't seem to care.
I didnt enjoy this class at all and found it to be harder than it has to be. Gives weekly HW quizzes that require you to read several articles so ctrl+f will be your best friend but even that doesnt help much. One thing I will say is most of the test qs can be found from her PP slides. She does give quite a bit of EC though which is good. 6/10
It wasnt that bad of a class but oh my goodness the way she words her questions make them 10 times harder than they need to be. Every quiz and exam takes every brain cell you have to complete.
Her class was not bad itself, if you work for the A you will get it. However, this prof is very rude. When my dad passed away I sent all of my profs the same email, and this was the only one that corrected a grammar mistake and asked for immediate documentation. Take another pols 207 prof that cares about their students.
This class is SO MUCH WORK. Dyer is really good about presenting clearly. Weekly homework assignments and Packback take hours, and aren't on the Exam. Study the end of module study questions for the exams. Interesting topics towards the end, but so many lectures and random materials that it drains motivation out of you.
DO NOT TAKE Prof. Dyer if you are looking for a simple and not time consuming class. She gives a heavy course load for the amount of hours you receive for this class. If you have a busy schedule, do not take this professor because you will not have time for the amount of work she gives. I do not recommend Prof Dyer at all.
Professor Dyer is very knowledgable and passionate about the subject, and is very organized and prompt with grading. That being said, this is definitely not a blowoff class and you will definitely have to work for your grade. I did all reading and assignments and barely made an A. Regardless, good prof.
This class was asynchronous for me, so not everyone can relate to my experience. One of the easiest classes I've taken. Organization of modules was clear, lecture material matched the exams. I never bought the textbook and did perfectly fine in the class, so I wouldn't bother with it. If your looking for an easy-going class, this is the one
homework due every sunday & packback posts every monday (3 responses & 1 question, she dropped 2 lowest, you can get full credit by using the curiosity point estimator) hw consisted of reading 4+ politics articles & answering 15 questions; she dropped the lowest grades. Everything else for completion credit. 4 exams no final.
Professor Dyer is very knowledgeable in what she teaches, she just provides lots of information you need to know. The quizzes are over online articles and can be confusing, but taking your time makes it better. The tests are not as straightforward and you have to think about the questions asked. Overall, not too difficult of a class!
There are probably easier professors out there. If you do your work and care about the class, easy A. If you're in a major which takes up most of your time, expect to spend time on this class as well. Gave 3 points of extra credit for completing extra assignments. Curved 3 tests also. Overall a harder professor than others I assume.
Dyer is a decent prof, but isn't very flexible. She has an annoying voice and makes you show your work exactly like she does in class or you won't get full credit on tests and quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but to get full credit on tests I'd advise it.
Insanely rude, loads a ridiculous amount of work on her students (most of which arent pols majors) for a BASIC LEVEL CLASS. There are better profs for much less work, her ego and expectations are absurd.
Her lectures aren't the most entertaining but they're definitely not boring. She does go through slides a little quickly however. While she does require a textbook, I have never used it and I've gotten As in the class and on all test. Speaking of the test, they are open note. There is some homework like packback and quizzes over articles.
OPEN NOTE TESTS, NONCUMULATIVE. The class is easy but boring. There are always 2-4 homework assignments that end up being busy work that doesn't really pertain to the class or what you are studying. Nothing is hard though. Dr. Dyer does not expand beyond the powerpoints that she posts on Canvas, so you don't even really need to go to class.
This class was one of the easiest things I've ever done. Open note tests, noncumulative final, etc. Homework is due before every test, but you can do it all in about 3 hours. Lectures can be skipped because she just lectures over the slides and the test is just the slides rewritten. TAKE HER.
The tests are open note and are not cumulative. She assigns homework for the current 3 chapters that will be on the next exam (which is a 3-4 week period) and it only takes me 5 hours to do all of it for each 3-4 week period. She keeps the lectures interesting.
She's okay. A little much for state and local govt but it could be worse. Homework's are difficult for no reason. Activities aren't hard, but unnecessary. Tests are kinda hard but I didn't study a whole lot. It was a well organized class. Packbacks are annoying af but easy 100. Overall not bad but you could probably find someone easier.
Personally, I am in no way a pols major, so I was looking to skim through a freshman-level class to get the credit I needed. If you are itching for tons of specific busywork every week for the class then this is the class for you. The professor is very knowledgeable with the subject, however, I personally do not like the excess amounts of homework
Professor Dyer makes state and local gov interesting. There is a good amount of homework, but it's all available for weeks before the test, so you can be a good student and space it out or do it all right before the test. I always did it before the test and still got an A. Tests are open note open book, and you can find question stems in the notes.
Super easy A for her Common Core classes. Tests are open note, mostly just revolve around things discussed in lecture. I will say there is a lot of homework assignments that don't take long, you just have to remember to keep up with them. Really boring, but not really her fault, it's literally Texas State and Local Government. Just go to class.
Dyer has simple lectures, she reads straight off the slides that she posts online, so there's no need to go to class. Tests are open note and homework is only ever due the day before the test, so you can work somewhat at your own pace. She does use packback though, so prepare to write those discussion posts.
So I just got my grade for my final assignment so time to write this review. Dr. Dyer is a great professor. Lectures are great and informative, class material is decently easy with more understanding than memorization. Tests are open note and mostly from her slides. Class tests reading comprehension on the homeworks. I suck at that so had to work h
Dyer was always pleasant to chat with and is generally pretty understanding. You won't need the textbook in this class, I didn't touch it once. The lectures cover the entire exam. They are open note and can be online. The only negative is that Dyer assigns a LOT of homework, of which each assignment takes around an hour of reading.
Plenty of easy homework assignments that will boost your grade if you pay attention, make sure you've used all attempts. In lecture, she has a dry humor that is engaging for some, annoying for others. Lectures are not necessarily required in order to do well, but I recommend going, as it will make the homework easier. Efficient and straightforward.
Her lectures are quite boring but she has videos posted online from her lectures. At the beginning of the semester, she told me the best way to study for her exams was with the study questions. However, using those, I still scored a high 70. She's very kind and will answer just about any question you have.
The class is really exam-heavy and there is little room for extra credit. She does curve exam grades. The HW is really long and requires lots of reading in form of new articles and then a hw quiz right after. I didn't find the class hard and actually skipped it a lot. BC the exams are open note and all you need are the powerpoints to search.
Good lecturer, but you don't need to go to succeed. I would definitely attend the last couple of lectures before tests, but that's all you really need. As long as you take good notes on the lectures and do your homework you can succeed. She's understanding but don't push it. Tests are worth a lot so make sure to study well.
Professor Dyer was great but the course will mentally drain you. Her homework is compiled of multiple (usually time consuming) articles that you are quizzed over. There are lots of completion grade assignments but they don't significantly improve your grade. Her lectures are long and very monotone. As a required course it was fine. Skipped classes.
Not a terrible prof, but there's way better out there. The homeworks are a ton of reading followed by a quiz and your overall grade is basically determined by the tests. If you can avoid taking her class, avoid it.
She has open-note exams which make this class so much easier and less stressful. Go to class, take notes ON YOUR COMPUTER, then use them on the exams. I never read the textbook and I studied about an hour per exam and got an A. Homework is maybe an hour and a half a week so it's very light. Not sure why people don't like her class.
She sucks. Lectures are boring and she will talk the entire time without taking a breathe. The homework is very time consuming and there is a lot of homework but only the test matter for overall grade. The tests are in person and not bad but hard to get an A on. Overall, you'll be better off with another prof.
Professor Dyer gives out way too much homework for a political science class. Plan to spend countless hours writing packback posts and taking her unnecessarily difficult homework quizzes. Tests are open note, but the questions are so in depth in most cases that notes and lecture slides do not help. I would stay away from this professor.
There are so many better profs for Pols 206/207. Dyer loads on hw that takes a couple hours to knock out and then you gotta complete packback. Not to mention the hw articles you have to read are pretty left leaning. Tests are open note but if you rely solely on looking through slides and notes you definitely won't complete the test in time.
SO much homework, you will definitley be spending hours doing it. Up to 9 homework assignments due at once. Tests are open note but not much help. Her lectures are extremely long. I would not recommend this professor for this class to anyone!
All her info on tests comes from the articles. don’t even need to go to class or look at notes. but the articles use super confusing language that all the test and hw relies on. there’s no way to study for anything in this class the tests being open note doesn’t even matter when none of the material comes from the notes.
Professor Dyer knows what she is talking about and is very well educated. However, her lectures could not hold my attention to save my life. You don't have to go to class to do well, in fact I would use the designated time in her class to complete the hours upon hours of busy work she assigns.
Professor Dyer's class structure is a bit like this: one homework quiz a week based off of assigned online articles; maybe 1 or 2 other little homework assignments (completion grade); and a packback discussion. It's really not bad at all. If you hate reading, though, then maybe look for another professor.
Do not need to go to class. Exams are open note / powerpoint. I did not study, used the powerpoints for exams and made a B on all of them. Most of the answers are somewhat ok to find in the time crunch. Excessive amount of homework that was actually pretty hard and time consuming. Should be able to get an A if you try HARD on the homework
Dyer's class is not bad at all. Her jokes can be corny and class can be dry, but if you go to class with an open mind you can learn some things that are relevant to real life. The homeworks are long sometimes, but doable. Exams are really easy if you have an understanding of government and politics, but helps if you go to class and use notes.
POLS207 is alot of work but Professor Dyer made it possible to actually complete. The class is very, very well organized and has allowed me to do very well in what I thought would be a hard subject for me.
If you read the lecture slides and write them down word-for-word, you will easily make at least a B on all tests. The homework and packback discussion board assignments are all easy but somewhat time consuming as you have to read through a lot articles. She also talks like she's reading off of a teleprompter. Overall pretty easy and straightforward
This is the first and probably only review I'm leaving. Stay away from Megan Dyer. It would be more worth it to get out of her class instantly than to take her. She talks like a robot in class and goes way too fast in her lectures. Her homework is extremely time consuming, like the work in High School. Take any other POLS prof and you'll get the A
This class is way harder than it needs to be
The tests are open note so not to hard, however the homework was very time consuming and the questions were unnecessarily complicated. She appeared to practice her lectures to the point she never took a breath and seemed frustrated when someone had a question. I would NOT recommend her class!
For a POLS class, expect an overload of busy work and very difficult homework quizzes over multiple articles. Weekly Packback on top of that. There are also many completion credit assignments that really are just a waste of time. The tests are not bad and are based on PowerPoints that are posted and the same ones she lectures over. She's very sweet
In the beginning, she told us that since we aren't political science majors, she would go easy on us. WRONG! gives out tons of homework that takes up too much of your time for no reason. She's probably a nice person, but her lectures bore everyone. All assignments are due on the same day rather than spaced out.
She's a good lecturer and her lectures are interesting, but I have never had so much pointless homework in my entire life. Most of the homework is for a completion grade, but the actual homework that are for a grade are ridiculously hard for no reason. Get ready to read through 4-5 different articles for each homework
Although she tells you to buy a textbook, you don't need it because her lectures are more comprehensive. Her tests are open-note, and she has no final, only 4 exams. There is quite a bit of homework, a good amount of them completion grades. There were 3 opportunities for extra credit. She comes off as cold sometimes but she is a softy at heart.
Dyer is a great professor and really knows her stuff. I will be honest, after spring break I didn't really attend class and will either finish with a low A or a high B depending on how this test went. There is definitely lots of homework but look at it this way: because each test is worth 15% of your grade it gives you a little bit of cushion.
This class was pretty much a breeze. Tests open note but I would say to study a bit before the exam so it goes smoothly. I went to class maybe half the time. Dyer is funny, not everyone thinks so, but she's doesn't try to be funny but she is. Homework is a lot if you do it in one day but def not as bad as everyone says.
I think this class was pretty manageable. Professor Dyer is pretty nice and gives extra credit. She is very clear on what is expected of you and it is totally possible to get an A if you do the work. There is a quiz every week over several articles, some of them take longer than others, and a Packback discussion due every week. Exams are not bad.
Prof Dyer wasn't terrible and it was a manageable class. The homeworks are kind of lengthy, but she gives extra credit and a lot of completion credit. The exams you need to study for, but they are open note. However if you don't study a ton, you can still pass the exams fairly easily. Lectures are kind of boring.
I respect professor Dyer. She is very knowledgeable and tried to make the class enjoyable. She posted video recaps of her lectures and she would crack the same jokes in the past videos that she did in the lecture. She gives a heavy amount of homework (more than my upper-level biology class), but her tests are open notes and she gave 3 extra credit
Not my favorite prof, but this class is manageable + passable even if you put only minimal effort. Exams are open-note but you could run out of time and not do well if you go in blind. Offered up to 3 points of extra credit and curved two of the exams, which is probably how I BARELY managed to scrape by with an A. Also skipped a lot of classes.
For what you want out of a core class which is a simple time where you learn some material on a required topic Dyer is the way to go. Lectures are about average but not needed as tests are open notes. If you have any inkling of interest in the topic the weekly homework isn't too bad. Curved some of the tests and gave 3 whole points extra credit
Take her. Attended class on the first day and never returned, only went on Exam Days. All exams are open note. Great extra credit opportunities that are points added to your final grade. My grade rose by 3 points.
Only need to come to class for exams, posts all the lectures on Canvas. Tests are open note, only thing is it's a lot easier if you take with a friend because some of the homeworks can be difficult. Overall 10/10
Class is easy to pass bc of her open-note exams/extra credit. She has made it clear that she realizes the state requires us to take the class, yet still makes exams unreasonably difficult. She is not understanding. If you have a hard time understanding politics, she does not help. Lectures are boring and her political bias is pretty obvious.
Didn't attend class for half of the semester, got an A. Lot of busy but easy work for HW + open note/lecture slides for the exams. She's understands that it's a core course, so she gives EC and has a generous grading policy. Teaches the course as state gov with TX as a main example rather than just TX gov, which is good if you're not super yee-haw.
I only went to class for the exams. The exams were easy, especially if you did notes, as they were all open note and open book. There was an unnecessary amount of homework with a few that took a while, but some of the articles she gave were actually quite interesting. Easy A.
Stopped going to lectures because she posts notes & videos of her talking through notes online. She's really funny though when I did go to class, I enjoyed it. Don't procrastinate on the homework, take your time reading the articles, and you'll do good on homework. Tests are open note and easy, but would recommend studying notes beforehand.
Test questions come straight from the PowerPoints and you allowed to look at said PowerPoints during tests, which makes them easy. Lots of busywork. As long as you stay ahead on it you should be fine. There are also quizzes over articles every week but you get two tries on it so any mistakes made can be fixed.
She was a trash teacher and the only one that didn't offer open note tests. There is A LOT of busy work for no reason and she acts very stuck-up about grading. Do NOT take Dyer!
Awful
I would not take this professor. I read the previous rates before this class and they all included easy, open notes test. The test are nothing like that now, the test do not relate to the PowerPoints in lecture and there is no open notes. The homework is also just so much it's insane.
Do not take you will be loaded down with lengthy articles and wordy quiz questions. She also asserts her political opinions through the homework articles, which to me isnt what shes getting paid to do!
This class is awful. The lectures are very boring and long and the homeworks are super hard for no reason. She gives 2 attempts for each HW quiz, but your final grade averages both attempts so if you do bad on the first attempt you already have a bad grade. Tests are hard and not open note. Avoid taking.
Look Aggies, as a POLS major I am telling you, do not take this chick. All POLS majors will tell you she is ridiculously hard. The homework assignments are ridiculous. She takes random articles that she agrees with politically (the majority of them just bashing conservatives) and creates super duper hard questions. Her exams ARE NOT OPEN NOTE!!
This class was very difficult and test heavy. The tests were in person, closed note, closed book, despite what many of the other reviews say. Her homework assignments were also difficult and often pretty politically biased.
Tests and homework were extremely difficult and she does not curve or do extra credit.
Pt2: I personally like Professor Dyer, she is highly intelligent and knowledgeable in her field, and I find her contempt for Alabama comical. There are a lot of claims that say she is particularly partisan; however, I somewhat disagree. She identifies as an Independent and I believe it stems from her fiscal conservatism and her social liberalism.
Here are a few key things abt Professor Dyer's class: # Tests are not open note, complex in structure, seldom have curves, and makes up 60% of your grade (H) # Completion, Reflection, Packback & HW make up 40% of your grade (E) # Expect to dedicate 4 hrs+ to HW & 1 hr to the textbook (optional, lecture sums up textbook) # Extra credit is rare
This teacher was horrible. Do not take her class. The homework's given were so hard to complete and took very long. She is not flexible at what so ever. She would not help any of her students if they came to her with a severe problem that needed to be addressed.
Not open note and homework is ridiculous
This professor literally is a pain. I'm having to work harder in this class than all of my past math classes and this is just some political science class. Sure, she is funny, but you shouldn't sacrifice your GPA for some humor. She is decent at teaching but UGH her grading is strict and awful and it makes me super mad.
Take this professor with caution. The homework is incredibly tedious and has little to no relation towards the exams at all. There is also 3 extra exams compared to the other professors. She does not drop exams. However the exams are pretty easy.
Whoever is saying exams are easy is lying. The average of the exams in my course are always in 70's. The homework is difficult as well, so expect to score 50% on some just because of terrible or confusing wording with little relevance to the articles themselves. It feels like the professor wants to watch the world burn this semester.
If you take dyer you'll be dying to Q drop. Literally the hardest class I have taken in college and I am an engineer. The tests are not open notes, the homework is extremely tedious and she forces her far left ideology on you the entire semester through her assignments and most times if you choose the most liberal answer it is correct. STAY AWAY!!!
This is one of the hardest class I've taken and I'm speaking as en engineering major !! We are not allowed notes during the exams and we have lengthy articles to read as homeworks who don't have anything to do with our exams !! Do NOT take this professor
I chose her because many people said her exams were open note, but I guess she changed that because now they're not. Overall pretty easy if you go to class. Her lecture slides are detailed and the her exams basically come from the slides. The homework is the longest part that takes about 3-4 hours, but you get two weeks to do it.
Would not recommend if you just need to take for credit or have a heavy course load, not an easy A. This class is a lot of reading for homeworks that take a very long time, and often answers are not easy to find. Test questions were difficult to understand even with open notes. Did offer extra credit but it did not affect grade that much.
Her lectures cover everything you need to know for the test and the questions aren't hard at all if you go to class and pay attention. The homeworks seem intimidating but most of the questions are pretty straightforward if you read the article. Some of them were pretty interesting too. Pretty easy A if you put in even the slightest effort.
This is worst professor I have ever had. Before this class I hadn't made below an 85 in any of my classes, Im a junior. Her class is very test heavy and the best I made on an exam has been a 53 and I studied very hard. Homework takes about 3-4 hours each and they are only 15 questions all multiple choice and i've only passed three. DO NOT TAKE!
Attention ADA students! This professor is NOT the class for you. This professor is very rude and wants to watch the world burn around her. And if you lost the genetic lottery of english reading comprehension as an ADA student, you're screwed in this class. Goodbye GPA, I will miss you
This is my second time taking Professor Dyer, I had to drop her course the first time because of my low grade. She gives two homework assignments a week. I do not recommend taking her unless you ABSOLUTELY have no choice but to.
Ms. Dyer makes the curriculum accessible outside of class, so there is no need to go to a lecture as long as you can read the slides. If you are willing to commit four hours once a month before each test to complete the assignments and read the slides, you should slide by with an easy A.
Professor Dyer is a pretty good professor. There's a good amount of homework, but it's not extremely difficult. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it's definitely helpful. If you have to miss, she's very accessible outside of class and puts all her slides on canvas. She also creates review guides for each week, which are amazing to study for tests.
She wasnt horrible, but I wouldnt take again. it was unclear what was on exams, and so I could study for hours but if it was the wrong material I wouldnt pass. My sister also took the class and got an A, so it depends on the work ethic really. She was very understanding when we had family issue happen, and I appreciated her deadline policies.
Do not take for 207! I never knew exactly what to expect from her exams, they always caught me off guard. Her lectures seemed overly general in comparison to exam questions. She also had homework quizzes based on articles that could be weirdly difficult. I had a hard time with some questions even after reading the article and re-reading parts.
Professor Dyer is an OK teacher. Her class is loaded with homework that can be somewhat time-consuming. However, the tests are fairly easy. Her lectures are pleasant enough. She teaches well enough that you should never have to open your textbook.
I have had to work harder in this class than any other class. You don't need the textbook. Test questions are very specific while notes are very general. Luckily there were two last minute extra credit opportunities. If you do have to take her I got better grades by skipping class and watching lecture videos on my own.
This is a required credit. She makes it a lot harder than it really is and gives you pointless busy work that is atrociously long. Some homework takes up to 2hrs long and you are given four of those in each unit. She gives you small activities that are meaningless and just wastes your time.
Dyer isn't a great lecturer, but attendance isn't mandatory and she puts all slides and video lectures in Canvas so you never have to go to class if you don't want to. Homework is time consuming but she drops grades. She gives 3 extra credit at the end of the semester each worth 1 pt added to your grade. You definitely have to study for tests!!
Very boring, hours of assignments, not accommodating to scheduling conflicts. She would not let me reschedule my exam for my own Ring Day. Acts like this is the most important class in our college career.
she was the worst professor. do not take her.
Good prof, just exam heavy. There is extra credit and some extra assignments that can help boost your grade.
She gives way too much homework, and the homework quizzes are the worst. Each homework quiz takes 2 hours to do and is extremely difficult. The exams are lecture based but the lectures are very boring, and hard to understand. No open notes or online exams!
No. Unless you're a political science major, do not take this class. I was literally in chem and math which were harder than this class, but because of the amount of homework assignments she gives, I spent the most time on this class. The homework assignments are also extremely useless and are not free 100's and don't help your grade.
Class can often be boring, this isnt really Professor Dyers fault but Pols is just boring. Homework is due all at once for each section, takes getting used to. I did not study for my first Exam and got a C-, tried hard in the next section attending every class, got a C+ on the Exam. Did not try the third time and got another C+. Exams are hard.
Professor Dyer is knowledgeable for sure, but her lecturing style can come off as very monotonous and boring for many. Homework assignments take a while, and there's a lotta busywork. Study the slides and review questions and you're good. Essentially, this is a tedious class that's harder than it needs to be.
She gives you so much homework that is unnecessary. She is really bad about rescheduling according to your schedule. Acts like her class is the most important on campus.
For a University required course, this class was unnecessarily challenging and time consuming. Professor Dyer lectures directly from her PowerPoints, but then includes specific questions on the test that she only broadly touched on. Unless you want to dedicate your life to Pols 207, I found it extremely difficult to make above a C on her exams.
DO ASSIGNEMTS WITH A FRIEND!! or else, you prob won't get an A. I never went to class, the exam is based on lecture slides, which she gives, and i thought they were easy. There's about 3 points of extra credit for the final grade, which really helped me get an A. I never used the txtbk. Don't forget abt the packbacks. Annoying voice
Pretty boring lectures - most of her students stopped attending after the first exam. She doesn't exactly read directly from the PowerPoints but all of her test material comes directly from the slides, so study that and you'll do good on the tests without attending the lectures at all. There is a lot of reading involved with the homework too.
Tests are not open note and the questions are very detailed and specific. The slides contain all the information but you have to know them very well in order to do well. The homework is very time consuming and does not help in terms of studying for the tests.
Easy class - take Dyer if you're not lazy/incapable of effectively studying a bit every day. Homework is a doable 1.5 hours a week of articles/assignments. Exams are totally off the slides with some common sense/critical thinking. Dyer does a great job of not making this class politically biased and focusing on more than just Texas state politics.
Soo much homework, when taking a lot of stem classes it really builds up. Test are easier than the homework, the homework for whatever reason is the hardest part of the course. She gives extra credit at the end of the course, she's actually a good lecturer but has to have the hardest homework.
Homework and other activities are time-consuming, but her tests are tough. Her wording doesn't really make sense. She used to have exceptional reviews because her tests were open notes, however they aren't anymore and often aren't fact-based rather they are conceptual. Avoid. But if you cant, she does offer some extra credit opportunities.
Tone is robotic which makes lectures so boring to listen to. HWs are hard for no reason and do not test knowledge of course concepts. Tests are also hard. Overall, would not recommend. There are many other profs to choose from for this course. Choose literally anyone else.
Her voice was so monotone that I fell asleep nearly every time I attended lecture. Did better on exams when I skipped and read the lecture slides right before than when I actually attended and read the textbook.
Dyer's a pretty cool professor. No-nonsense but lots of extra credit. Doesn't take attendance but her lectures are always fun (and readily available on Canvas if you do decide to skip). As long as you understand the basic material you'll do good on her exams.
Dyer is a great prof, she's definitely a character. Tests are somewhat tricky, but assignments are actually interesting. Great if you're willing to work.
She is so boring to listen to. she just reads straight from the PowerPoint slides, and it is so hard to pay attention because she does not make it interesting. She posts so much homework that has nothing to do with the course material. Would not recommend to anyone, there are much better options at Tamu.
This teacher sucked. She was so dry during all her lectures. The exams were so difficult, and I never had enough time. She also gave out so much homework every week that there wasn't enough time to study for the exams. I literally have never had a class with so much homework in all my years at A&M. If you want an easy A, take someone else.
Homework is extremely challenging and takes so much time when it has nothing to do with the exam. Her wording is confusing on the exams and makes it much more difficult. They are very conceptual and deal with intricate details. Overall, for a required course there are much better professors that make the class easier.
Way too much homework, takes forever to do. Makes the class way harder than it should be. Lectures are like watching paint dry. Tests are ridiculously hard since she changed it from open notes.
The course wasn't hard, and she's not a bad lecturer, but sometimes she fr glitches out a bit. She assigns so so so much meaningless homework and it's just annoying because they don't really apply at all to the exams. All in all pretty okay, but just set a full day to power through all the homework.
Dr. Dyer is very knowledgeable in her field and is EXTREMELY well organized, but her lectures and homework assignments are god awful. Her lectures are boring due to her robotic tone and are not engaging. Worst of all, I have more homework in her class than all of my other classes combined and around 80% of it is just meaningless busy work.
Professor Dyer is very knowledgeable in what she teaches, however the way the assignments are organized is difficult and time-consuming. If you are looking to take POLS 207 as an easy credit, I would not recommend taking it from Dyer.
I would avoid this professor. She is good person, but not a good teacher. You can do better by skipping class and reading the slides before the test. I remember one time a student asked a question out of curiosity, and she essentially shot him down. That left a bad impression because I believe all professors should enhance a students curiosity.
Professor Dyer wasn't bad at all. Her lectures were alright, a little boring but its a government class so it's alright. She is very knowledgeable about the material and very nice as well. The one thing I don't like about the course is the amount of hw. I understand needing to assign hw, but I feel like the work in this course was a bit excessive.
The exams were fair, however, the homework is basically like the SAT reading section. The expected time it takes to do the homework is about 3-4 hrs... it takes me about 5 hours each and even 10 on one of them. Just read the textbook and take notes over the lecture slides.
Professor Dyer is incredibly nice and very respectful. The class is tough though because you are reading books from Socrates, Plato, etc. There are three exams that are essays and a few Packbacks but she gives very good feedback. If you are wanting an easy A, do not take this class. However, if you want a class that will challenge you then take it!
she has a super annoying voice but honestly this class is a joke and she is a fine teacher . Just read the slides and the test is directly on it. She gives review questions on canvas - do them and you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
Dr. Dyer's exams and homework define the class. She cares more about the material than any students do, so sometimes it can feel like more work than you want from an "easy credit" class. However, most assignments are very basic, although time consuming, and the exams are practically on the PowerPoints. I encourage attending lecture, though.
I stopped going to class at some point bc as long as you take notes on the slides on your own, you'll do fine in this class. There is a lot of reading for hw, but it could've honestly been worse (I finished 4 weeks of hw in 3 hours). The tests are done with lockdown browser, but she does give extra credit and sends plenty of reminders
Her lectures are kinda boring but its also POLS so there's not much she can do to make it interesting. If you pay attention to the slides and do the homework (which can be kinda long but not too hard) the class is easy and there's also lots of extra credit, I'm glad I took her as a prof.
I stopped going to class after realizing the exam material is just straight from the slideshows, which are online. You do have to show up for exam day though. Utilize the HW review questions to prepare for exams, they're extremely helpful.
I will start by stating that by the end of the semester, I lost respect for her as a person, but she wasn't a bad professor. Her exams are based off information on the lectures. Use the chapter study questions. She gives 3 extra credit opportunities. She gives a lot of homework and it is decently time consuming but not necessarily difficult.
Overall professor Dyer isn't that bad. The worse thing is that there is a lot of hw that will take up a good amount of time. Getting a B is pretty easy if you study for the exams a bit and do the hw. However, if you want an A you will have to work for it. You might be able to find a better professor, but professor Dyer's class isn't too difficult.
The professor's teaching style is not bad, but there is so much homework and busy work in the class. If you are an engineer already flooded with work, just don't expect this class to be easy because this class was honestly more time-consuming than many of my STEM classes.
Dyer is not a difficult professor, but her class could get pretty dry at times. Her tests were essay exams and weren't super difficult so long as you had a basic grasp of the readings. Homework wasn't super overwhelming and she's a reasonable grader.
Prof Dyer is a great lecturer for political theory. Its a reading intensive course, but it's not so bad as long as you follow along the suggested dates. Attendance is not mandatory but good luck understanding the material without going. Grading consisted of 3 exams which made most of your grade with some extra homework assignments sprinkled in.
Prof Dyer is just OK. Her lectures were dull but informative & relevant to the (all multiple choice) exams. Weekly homework consists of Packback posts and taking a quiz over some news articles. These were tedious and excessive in length, and didn't really help prepare you for exams. Exams aren't difficult, just review the lecture slides beforehand.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Homework makes no sense, no accessible office hours, extremely lecture heavy. The homework tries to purposefully trick you, and she frequently misspeaks during lecture, making them very confusing. There is extra credit availble, and it does help your average. Tests are confusing, don't make sense.
This professor has good lectures but she talks like a TED talk. You dont have to show up for class until exams because all the lectures are in slideshows on canvas. her homeworks are very time consuming and make zero sense. The questions that are asked are very hard to locate in the attached articles because of the diction she uses. Overall meh
She can be a little awkward but she's nice and funny, just do the packback homework and study her slides for the tests its not bad at all.
Homework assignments are so hard and extremely time consuming. Exams are nothing like the study sets she posts on canvas. I wasted so much time studying because it never paid off on exam days. I would walk out of every exam frustrated because I would put so much into this class and get nothing back. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR POLS 207.
Overall, I found her lectures boring. She read directly off the slides; however, she does post them, and the exams are easy and directly from the slides. One packback a week, lowest two get dropped. 4 exams with no final. Homework quizzes are the hardest part of the class, don't relate to exam, and take well over an hour to do. (one a week).
Overall, Professor Dyer isn't terrible. Manageable tests that closely tie to slide content. Lectures can be dull, resembling a monotonous TedTalk. The most challenging aspect is the intentionally difficult homework, taking at least an hour for each topic.
You do not have to attend her class. The only hard aspect of the class is the Homework which is a pain if you let it pile up. Everything is in the readings for it you just have to take your time. The tests are word for word from the slides which is great. She is very nice and understanding but her voice does get a little annoying over time.
There is a lot of papers to write and She is a tough grader and takes a while to grade. However; gives a lot of extensions and is easy to work with. Attendance is not mandatory
Easy grader, passionate about the subject she teaches. Attendance was taken on random days with a quick response question (if you do it, you get a 100). Class was mainly focused on papers, but if you follow the prompt, it's not hard to get an A. She definitely wants the best for her students.
Professor Dyer was terrible. Homeworks could take up to or beyond a couple hours and exam questions were confusing. Lectures were incredibly boring and if you asked questions, she would barely answer and kind of brush it off. Only good thing is exams were short and multiple choice.
Super dull lectures. Tests are not too bad, but homework resembles the SAT reading section and is near impossible to do well on. Look for another prof if possible.
She can be a bit dry at times, but all of her information is clear and understandable. The grading criteria and information you need to know for tests/assignments are clear. Most tests are concept-focused, so make sure you truly understand the material. Also, make sure your computer works before the exam, or you will get a sarcastic comment.
talks like a redditor or an AI bot, but also gives the most useless time consuming homework. if you're going to teach a class then at least make the homework correlate to the exams
The absolute worst thing about her classes are the weekly homeworks. She assigns 3-5 articles to read and answer questions on, and makes the questions purposefully confusing and difficult to answer. She literally assigned a 200-page research book one week, along with 2 articles to read with it. I would rather drive off a bridge than take her again.
this chick has no life outside of school or something because her intentionally difficult homework is almost sadistic. she purposely tries to trick you with her wording and answers. are you that bored that you have to make questions annoyingly difficult for a bunch of kids in a class they're only taking because we have to? get a new job.
I really wanted to give this professor the benefit of the doubt, but she made this class way harder than it needed to be. As someone who is already a stem major, this class will almost drown you from all the tedious and unnecessarily hard homework and exams that no matter how much I studied, I could never make higher than a B.
she needs to get a life and a new job
Not the worst class I've ever taken, but If you have a major that isn't POLS or have other more important classes to focus on this class will drown you. The homework is insanely long, and if you don't study the slides you will tank the test. Don't take the course unless you're just needing to burn time on something that could be easier.
SHE IS NOT BAD!! Dr. Dyer is so kind - she told us to take care of ourselves and not worry about missing an exam when some people were sick. Although her homework may take some time, it simply just requires focus and effort of reading the articles in detail. Exams are not hard at all if you study the slides. Very smart and accessible too! Take her!
Dr. Dyer is a great professor. Taking this class was rather easy. A few things to know. 1) all exam materials are straight from the lecture slides which is posted online, so technically going to class is not mandatory however it is nice to hear it be explained. 2) the textbook is not mandatory unless you care to read more about the subject.
Shes a nice person but shows no signs of wanting you to pass. Her emails are bland and not helpful. Lectures are very boring. The class has few assignments so if you need something that has nothing to do for 90% of your semester then this is your class. Easy exams, just use her study guides.
Fairly easy but the homework is ridiculous. You have to read articles & answer questions but they're worded so insanely that you could read the article 3 times & still not know the answer. It's basically reading comprehension on steroids. Article info is not even on tests. It's time consuming & annoying but manageable if you have time to burn.
She honestly isn't a bad prof. She is very clear in what she expects of you. The homework are time consuming, but if you read the articles closely before starting the assignments, you will do fine. The second test wasn't bad, and as long as you study and read the text book you will do well. I never went to class, just studied the slides.
She makes this class 10x harder than it has to be. Do not take her if you have other classes that are more important to put your effort towards because it is so time consuming. First day of class told us we would prob end with a B or C. Discouraging and obviously doesn't care about our success.
She just rambles in lecture. Very monotone, hard to follow. The homework killed my grade in the class. Do not take this class if you don't have time to really sit down and read her slides. This class was way harder than it needed to be. It is as if she was the kid that got bullied in school and this is her get back. AVOID
ok i hated her homework assignments cause it was designed to trick you and was just an overall nuisance to do but i do commend her for giving 4 points of extra credit on ur overall grade
Her lectures are like a bad Ted Talk. I did better on the exams that I didn't attend lectures for. Each homework assignment will take you 2 hours to complete. Dont take her unless you are great as learning on your own. Clear expectations though and not impossible. Just not a great time.
This class was the worst class that I have ever taken during my academic career at Texas A&M. The homework quizzes would take hours because it contained extremely convoluted questions. Professor Dyer is also not a nice person and honestly I don't know why she became a professor since it really seems like she hates her jobs.
Fall 23. The class wasn't that hard especially if you've taken AP gov and paid even a tiny bit of attention during your senior in HS. Long ahh quizzes where you have to read Long ahh articles for hours, not even about politics but like a SAT English exam. Tests are just common sense and good guessing. Very eccentric person w/ Grandiose delusions.
Professor Dyer's class is a challenge, but using unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook can make it manageable. Attendance is a must, and the workload is time-consuming. Be ready to put in the effort, and you'll likely earn a decent grade.
not fun, boring, tons of homework and she yaps.
She had very lengthy lectures that I couldn't follow. The homework took at least 2 plus hours to complete and you had to read articles that were at least 8 pages. I didn't do well on the tests because you have to teach yourself the content.
as an engineering major, this class made me more suicidal than any other class. the only thing worse than the tests and homework was having to listen to professor dyer in lecture. she is unbearable and clearly hates her job.
Had to take POLS 207. I thought Dyer was good. She genuinely tried to make class interesting. She also taught the material very well. There are in lecture quizzes so attendance is mandatory. The homeworks are also pretty rough, they are very long and ask kind of obscure questions from the reading material. Besides this, I thought Dyer was good.
I've read many reviews before taking this for my freshman year and I was scared, but this class was not bad at all. The homeworks do definitely take some time, but other than that exams are pretty simple and the concepts are not hard to learn. Prioritize concepts not memorization, that'll help you alot on exams. Her lecture is also not bad 👍
Attendance is mandatory bc she has lecture quizzes on canvas but she drops 2. The hw takes abt 1 1/2 hours because they are just reading articles but I recommend making friends in this class to help each other out, 2 are dropped. I didn't study too much before exams but do recommend attending SI session before exams, 3 exams 1 is dropped. Not bad
This class is so boring. If you can pick another professor, please do. She gives out useless homework that won't be on the tests that takes at least 1 1/2 hours to do. Lectures are hard to follow along and her slides are not very clear when doing the chapter reviews. You have to teach yourself the material but also go to the study sessions.
She yaps a lot and doesn't say many useful things. The lectures are useless which mainly sucks because attendance is mandatory. She also assigns more homework than necessary. The only good thing about her class is that it is easy.
Do not believe the reviews under this, Prof. Dyer is not that bad of a teacher. Her tests are pretty fair as long as you pay attention in class and review the slides, and the Packback posts are fairly easy to do. Homework assignments definitely take some time, but you will be fine as long as you take your time. Her lectures are also engaging!
Very rude when trying to answer questions in class or on email but not a hard class overall if you just read the slides
Go to the lectures and pay attention (despite being permitted to skip 1/3 of them) because then you quite literally need 20 minutes of studying before the exam and you'll be fine. Use the wrap-up and review questions for each unit and answer the questions for yourself during class, then again after class, then again before the exam. She's great!!
I was an engineering major in Professor Dyer's class and struggled because the tests were very different from the slides. If you focus on key concepts, you can do decently. I didn't attend lectures, just reviewed slides. Her lectures are boring, often spending over 6 minutes on one slide with unrelated info. Avoid her.
Really smart and knows what she's talking about. Lecture slides have all the info you'll need. Has lots of hw (articles with questions, packback, reflections have tests). Textbook given is all fluff. Super easy course tho.
Amazing professor! Lectures were boring and all the content is in the PPTs, but you had to show up to 2/3 of classes to get the attendance grade. Lots of reading and homework that help you learn the material. Study questions and non-graded quizzes are lifesavers when studying! If you take notes and do the HW, you'll pass.
Easy class made annoying and harder than it has to be. Everything in this class is boring but just pay attention and do all of the work on time. Reading assignments are also a pain but read the articles closely and you'll do fine. Try to avoid this class but if you get it it's not the end of the world.
Fantastic professor and very well taught with a very easy class with minimal homework and great lectures. I would give a 6/5 if possible for Dr. Dyer.
Professor Dyers lectures were boring and required attendance due to her attendance quizzes, however the tests and homework were escpecially difficult and an A is easily attainable with some studying.
horrible, lectures sucked and were so boring. Tests were hard and did not line up with slides. switch out on all costs
Took honors. Boring lectures, but she was very fun to talk to. She always answered my questions or did her best to find answers for me. The assignments tended to be interesting, like going to a town hall meeting, learning about bizarre aspects of Texas governance, or writing open-ended essays about what's in the news. Also super easy tests, IMO.
This class would be amazing, if I was a junior Political Science major and not a freshman Engineering major taking this class for Core Curriculum Credit. I did more work in this class than Math and Physics combined. Take Jesse Chupp or Jason Smith, unlike Megan Dyer they understand the redundancy of this course and structure accordingly. BTHO Dyer.
This class is obviously required to graduate, and since I already struggled with a lot of the concepts and to stay focused during the lectures, I had a hard time in this class. I feel this would be different for someone going into political science, but for a new transfer here at TAMU who's studying HMGT, my brain couldn't keep up.
Really like Professor Dyer. Attendance was mandatory, and there were daily in-class quizzes, so you had to be there. Lectures were mostly reading off slides, boring but not hard. Homework is due the day before exams, and the packbacks require low scores. Exams are not bad if you pay attention. Very nice professor overall.
Had her last semester while also getting my rear kicked by MATH 151 and CHEM 107/117. Easy class, interesting lectures, decent homework (read news articles and answer questions with a side of Packback), and way easy to approach and ask questions. 10/10 would recommend her for anyone and for people interested in politics.
POLS 207 by Megan Dyer is a tricky class because the lectures are monotone and hard to pay attention to. The content is dense, and the exams require a lot of studying. This is a put in the work get the A class, but I put in way more work than I would have liked. The homework is difficult and not a guaranteed 100% in its respective grading category.
annoying lecturing, she can't speak a sentence without stuttering and it's hard to follow the jargon. but she's nice. homeworks are lengthy and are way too much work than necessary for 207. take CHUPP! if you're gonna take difficult classes, do NOT take dyer with them. the amount of work is so unnecessary and heavier than any other POLS professors.
Her lectures are very dull and she requires that you correctly answer a quiz to be counted present which is part of your grade. She puts out her lectures on canvas, just study those to do well on the tests. Her homework are all due the night before the test and are time consuming yet will not help you study for the test. Take another professor.
Lots of homework and 4 big tests. She's not a hard prof, her lectures just aren't interesting at all. Counts attendance by lecture quiz you have to get RIGHT to count. Homework is harder and longer than needs to be. Tests are only based on power points, not sure how to really study for them. Time consuming, but not hard. If you can, get diff prof.
Take a different prof. I think i got an A? but exams are hard for an intro class. hw is time-consuming and useless, you read 4-5 long articles and answer in-depth questions. packbacks. she drops lowest exam from 1-3, but not final. class is dull + attendance is 67% mandatory. drops a couple hws and pbs. the extra credit is basically worthless tbh.
Dr. Dyer is clearly passionate about political philosophy. She's a nice lady, but her lectures can be awkward at times. The reading is difficult but fascinating. The grading consists of 6 homeworks and 3 exams you must study for to get a good grade. I recommend this class if you want a rewarding challenge.
I don't understand the poor reviews. Professor Dyer clearly cared about the subject she taught and did her best to make state and local government as interesting as it possibly could be. Plus I enjoyed her sense of humor lol.
Very knowledgeable, though her lectures are often awkward and strange. The readings were difficult as they were all written centuries ago, but interesting nonetheless. Six packback assignments and three exams that aren't difficult if you study and invest time into the material. Not an easy course, but nothing too challenging. A fair experience.
As an engineering major, her class isnt hard, just annoying to deal with & makes for a hassle. Lectures are boring & quite awkward. The homework articles she assigns are incredibly long reads & her tests require some studying if you want an A in the class. I would recommend a prof who doesn't give you as hard of a time with this class.
Start studying day one. It's possible to get an A, just difficult with the HARD homeworks-- gives you 2 attempts on them but averages the scores! Exams cover lots of content/details but it all comes from her slides. She's funny imo, but she just repeats what's on lecture slides. She gave extra credit which brought my grade up a letter!
It honestly is if you take notes and review them before the test you will do fine. Your lowest test grade is dropped. The homework is weirdly difficult, but you get two tries. Lectures are super boring, but her awkward personality is endearing. If you have good time management and won't be lazy with this class, then you will be fine.
Having to walk into this class everyday felt like I had been ran over by a car and then they reversed over my body and drove over it again this class lowered my mental health the teacher is so obsessed with her PHD if u do not refer to her as doctor she will ignore your email. I have met nicer people than this professor in federal prison
Professor Dyer is not as bad as people make her seem. She is very nice, but can be a little awkward at times. The class itself is not hard, as long as you show up to class for her attendance quizzes, you will do fine. Her lectures are over slides, which she posts on Canvas. She also offers extra credit opportunities.
worst prof i've ever had. currently struggling to keep a 90 in the course. i would study for hours on end outside of class and pay attention to the lectures and would still get B's on the tests b/c they would have random topics that weren't covered in lectures or on the study questions. POLS 207 is my lowest grade and i'm an engineering student :(
A very easy course, as long as you have a basic grasp on American governance as a whole. She is an engaging lecturer and a nice person to talk to. Don't stress about this class. There's a decent amount of homework but it isn't particularly taxing or difficult. You can not show up to some lectures and still do very well in the course.
Class was not too bad but her lectures were sooooo boring that it was hard to attend. If you know the material rather than memorizing it you should do good on test.
Everybody bashes Dr. Dyer but she really isn't that bad. She's a little odd but I found her funny in a satirical way. 3 tests, and PLENTY of easy A assignments (packback). Reads directly off of the slides but only requires 67% attendance. She's gracious with what she drops and gave extra credit that bumped my final grade up 2%.
Really quirky woman. Lectures are super boring unless you're really interested in the topic. She is very gracious with dropping grades though, and the packbacks and reflections are easy 100's. The homework are tedious but doable. Understand the concepts and DO THE TEST REVIEWS and you'll be fine. Not as bad as people say.
She lectures right off the slides but tests are pretty straightforward. There are a few homework assignments that include 5-6 articles to read, and she offers extra credit throughout the semester. Do test review questions before tests and you're good. Compared to previous ratings she's lowk not that bad
The low reviews are from people that don't want to do any work. Class was easy as long as you put a little bit of time into studying. Her lectures are sometimes disjointed, but you can tell that she is passionate about the subject. I would recommend taking her for this course.
Don't know why the bad ratings, she's really not that bad. Lectures are a bit long but she cares about POLS and if you pay attention will be very useful. Good amount of HW but more than enough materials to do well on fairy easy exams. Drops the lowest one as well. She's a good person and prof and the 2.9 rating is so misleading you will do fine.
Boring lectures. Had technical difficulties during an exam and took it on paper. Got half points because I wrote on it. She never told me not to and then told someone the next exam to not write on it since I emailed her wanting it fixed. I never got any help from her and was blown off and treated like an idiot by her. Lots of extra credit though.
Requires 67% attendance through quizzes based on accuracy, not completion. She's really nice if you go to her office hours but not the best at explaining. More HW than other profs for an intro class (a lot of articles to read that don't help with exams), but she's a fair grader and gives extra credit. I had a low-B average on her exams and got an A
do not take this course. she bases your entire grade on 3 exams, the third being the final. they're all in-class essays and you have around an hour to do them. there are NO homework assignments or extra credit provided to boost your grade. she goes on random tangents which isn't helpful when you're already wondering why you even showed up to class
Dr. Dyer is very knowledgable and truly tries to help her students learn about the importance of state and local government. Her lectures are long(~75 minutes) but mostly engaging. My only gripe is her tedious homework which requires you to read ~4 articles per chapter and answer specific questions about them. Besides that, not a difficult class.
Professor Dyer was good at explaining political concepts, communicating with students, and consistently related concepts to current political events and figures. Most of the grade comes from four exams. Plenty of "most harmful assignment" grades were dropped. Each lecture has an accompanying quiz and homework, as well as weekly discussion posts.
As an engineering major, the class was not terribly hard imo. All the content you need to study for exams are on her lecture slides which she posts on canvas. She had a 67% mandatory attendance which was nice since I missed a little more than that but still got an A. She's really nice and fun to talk to in office hours. Overall good class.
There are so many benefits to taking POLS207 with Dr. Dyer. She offers multiple extra credit opportunities, there's only a few homework assignments, easy weekly packbacks, she'll drop your lowest exam grade (out of the first 3) and her lectures are clear and informative. Reading the textbook before each exam helps tremendously, so keep it in mind.
Professor Dyer is very organized; she explicitly outlines what students need to do to achieve their desired grade in the syllabus. The tests go over what's in the textbook. You will be reading a lot for homework and extra credit. Attendance isn't required, but there are lecture quizzes that count toward a grade, with 33% of the scores dropped.
