Chillest chem lab ever
Really tough class and really tough exams. It is possible to get an A if you commit your life and soul to the class. Don't have to go to lecture but she does give random in class activities. she also talks with HUGE pauses which makes a 2 hour class extremely boring
She’s hard but chill... the class has about 6 papers all on experiments you've probably done before. The quizzes are easy but they can be difficult if you don't write the right info in you lab note book. She’s great and you can make an A if you work hard.
So there are a lot of people on here who complain about how hard she is. She gave us a ridiculous amount of free points in class and almost all of her in class problems were on the test. Almost every single problem is answerable with the information from the problems with little book reading. She will help you with the problems if you ask...
I LOVE SIKOWITZ! Honestly she's uber sweet, an excellent professor. Goes through and answers all the questions thoroughly. I don't understand why there are bad ratings, she's always easy to talk to and very helpful. P.s. She's a cutie. I wish she taught more classes.
Megan is super sweet, & not a bad biochem professor at all! She writes really helpful study guides for her exams, but just remember it's biochem, so it isn't an easy A, but with her, it's do-able! I found biochem 1 to be more difficult than biochem 2, but biochem 1 was her first semester teaching. I think she has made good adjustments!
I am currently taking the class. The tests are very very fair. 70% of the questions just rehash what is on her previous 2 exams (which she provides to you with the answers). There is also a study guide that she posts online that pretty much tells you what is going to be on the exam. Its interesting and Dr. Erb is a good professor.
Megan is one of the best professors at Mason! Unfortunately, she teaches some of the most difficult courses, so the students who expect to be given their degree have problems with her. Exams test knowledge of concepts, not facts, which is the whole reason we are pursuing science degrees, no? Available to help, material is on her ppts. Super cute!
She is a good teacher but is not helpful outside of the class and does rarely responds to any email. She also seems to be not following her own syllabus and enforce the rules and policies randomly now and then! Try to avoid her!!
Her class in long and boring. she is definitely not even close to be the best professor in the chem department! Luckily, she is not the one teaching the class every semester! on the positive note, she gives out study guide and the exams are not very hard.
I absolutely loved Dr. Erb. She is so very organized and clear. Her lectures are well designed and her tests include the materials she covers in lecture. Textbook is unnecessary. I love her smile. She loves her job and that is what i most admire about her.
Dr. Erb's absolutely fantastic! Her lectures are organized and she's knowledgeable. Anyone saying that she's no help outside class, probably wasn't doing their part and studying to begin with. Biochemistry's hard, that goes without saying, so expect to put in time outside class. It won't be an easy A, but she works with you and emails you quickly!
Dr. Erb is a great professor. Her exams can be tricky and you MUST do well on the MC section to have a chance at a good grade but lectures are straight forward. You barely need the book. 4 exams, none are curved but she "normalizes" at the end of the semester. Time consuming/difficult subject but interesting! Take biochem with easy classes!
Everything you want from a professor for a 400+ course. If you are taking a 400 level science course, the material you cover is going to be difficult, if you cant accept that then you honestly are lying to yourself. Erb gives you 3-4 weeks to the homeworks, gives study guides, and isnt a extremely tough grader. The exams aren't extremely difficult.
Prof. Erb is extremely approachable and always makes herself available. She had every test graded w/in a week, made some good jokes, and broke down Biochem. into comprehensible bits. Grade A. If you want to get an A, I suggest you show up to every class, copy your notes & do homework as you do so, and fully prepare yourself for her study guides.
Erb is an awesome professor, but this class is incredibly tough. Best way to get though is record her lectures, keep up with the class (review every day at home), don't just cram for exams, look up video lectures like AK Lectures, and study your butt off. The book may be helpful but you can get by without it, it's a bit too detailed.
As a senior I can honestly say that professor Erb was one of the best I have had at Mason. The material is very tough, but she breaks it down and makes it enjoyable to learn and understand. The tests are 50/50 multiple choice/free response, but if you prepare properly and go over her study guide, it's very straight forward.
She is definitely approaching the subject from a chemistry aspect so if you have a solid organic chemistry background you are set for the course and it's an easy course, but if you are more of a Biology Student then do not take her and take Polayes in the Spring
I took her over fall. She def was the worst professor that I've ever had at GMU. She doesn't know the materials well. She is extremely rude and disrespects student. There is no way to get an A in her class. Our class barely passed every exam. If you have a choose to take it with someone else, do so bc she is terrible.
In two words, very arrogant and very rude.
Exams are now entirely MC with each question worth a whopping 4%. She doesn't provide study guides, so it's impossible to tell what she'll decide to test on and, therefore, it's very difficult to do well on the exams. She also doesn't give them back after grading, which is annoying. She's quite rude and loves to yell.
The class is mostly exams and the tests are all multiple choice. The tests aren't really that difficult, but the lack of questions makes it hard to get a good grade on every test. She is dry in teaching the material and doesn't seem to care much about her students.
The class is mostly exams and the tests are all multiple choice. The tests aren't really that difficult, but the lack of questions makes it hard to get an A on every test. She is dry in teaching the material and doesn't seem to care much about her students.
Take BIOL 463 in the spring! I did better on her exams the less I paid attention to her, I only went for attendance and tophat questions. She takes attendance. Don't waste too much energy on the hw, quickly get them out the way using chegg. Focus on understand the pp and her past exams. She reuses 1-3 questions from past exams. Dont get textbook.
AVOID. Her lectures are all over the place. I did better on tests when I just watched youtube videos. Tests are worth 20% each with only 25 multiple choice questions. Totally ridiculous. You can know about 80% of the material but if she tests on that 20% you don't know ... I feel bad for the biochem majors that have to take her again. YIKES.
Dr. Erb isn't as terrible as these reviews make her out to be. Biochemistry is a HARD class regardless of who you take it with. Her tests are 25 questions which is sucks if you focus on the wrong info. The homework and participation can boost you up. Focus on the learning goals at the beginning of each lecture/ppt to study for exams.
Dr. Erb is 100% as terrible as these reviews make her out to be. Sadly, this class might have been interested if it werent for her mundane teaching style. She needs to reorganize the class. Top hat there to hurt more than help. Recommendation: no need to make test material so obscure. Reorganize tests and lecture. avoid her if you want to learn.
I think the exams are better with all multiple choice because the past exams with free answer looked even harder. But the 25 question MC is still really hard. The class is a tough one regardless and she does not make the class bearable. Her teaching style is boring and the exam questions are out of this world. AVOID IF POSSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!
She's not a good teacher and she's very unapproachable. The Sapling HW will NOT prepare you for tests and don't bother buying the textbook, you won't use it. TopHat questions only hurt your grade. She's very confusing and you can even find contradictions between her past exam answer keys. But at least she curves at the end, so that's something.
Dr. Erb is a great professor. Probably the best you can get for biochem! The textbook is extra; focus on the powerpoint and pay attention in lecture! Start studying at least 3 days earlier and make note cards because the content is just so much! Make sure you do the homework and come to class for the top hat points!
The textbook helps, although reading it is not mandatory. Dr. Erb is a great professor- she is accessible outside of class. Unapproachable at first but if you get to know her she is very helpful. Tests are doable if you study the slides and past exams. 4 exams. Final is non-cumulative. Curves up to B.
I am not sure if Dr. Erb is good. Yes, she curves to a B. But for an A, dont think that being 10 percent above average will get you an A because the curve is upto a B which many students in my class thought. It will give you a B+! The curve is weird! You can get a B by being at average but not an A due to her almost same answer choice for exams.
I memorized everything but still got questions wrong and not because I dont know the info but because the way answer choices are written in exams. They are extremely similar! You need to think in a certain way and approach the answer choices in a certain way for getting the questions right. The problem is not memorization, it is the answer choices.
One of the best professors I ever had! Lectures are very helpful, I recommend recording them for review. Exams are quite easy if you have put in a bit of effort into understanding the material. All multiple choice, questions are straightforward.
I waited a semester to a year to take her instead of the other prof, now I regret my decision. She is tough! Biochem is already a hard subject and she makes it no easy at all, but make it worse by asking a detail question from one slide out of 300 slides and in which each slide will have a zillion of information! Just a big No!
So to get an A in this class you will have to read the textbook after class and learn the things she goes over in class really well to the point that you can teach it. No need to read before lecture since the book is very dense. She is amazing and really breaks down biochemistry into a more feasible subject. But you will have to put in effort!
Sorry but only difference between getting A and B is TEST TAKING STRATEGIES Look at her old exams and try to find out the points she stresses and her multiple choice techniques Her teaching of BIochem won't stay with you after class if you're studying for mcat Her tests focus on understanding Erb's techniques rather than understanding the material
Material is difficult but Dr. Erb makes it feasible and organized. Her powerpoints break up the info into digestible pieces. Her lectures are a breeze to follow and I found I could almost always keep up with her in my note-taking. Exams are tricky but she posts many old exams for reference. Powerpoints are all you need, textbook is supplementary.
Dr. Erb is an OK teacher but in many situations, she come across very arrogant and rude.
Worst professor I have experienced. Her study guides are useless and dont reflect whats on the exams. Graded only by a few things, so if Chem isnt your major or strong suite then youre going to fail. Office hours are useless to go to since she offers very little help or guidance. DO NOT take this professor.
I'd give Dr. Erb a solid middle of the road score. She isn't disrespectful or rude like some professors. She will help you succeed but you have to work for it. Biggest flaw picks terrible LA's, best trait extremely intelligent she should have a research lab.
Dr. Erb is ok. I do agree that her exams are really based around weird tricks and strange words she uses to trip people up. You could master a topic and still get questions wrong because of the way she asks things
Took it over summer, the lecture videos were really tiring. Exams were all multiple choice. Most of the questions were "which of the following is not true/false," this made the exam quite confusing. So to get a desired grade, you will need to watch her videos over and over plus do the practice exams.
Her class was a terrible experience for me at GMU. She is rude and arrogant. Don't even think about her office hours because you'll feel unwelcome to ask questions or even feel stupid to ask. I was rushing to graduate and I was caught by mistake. I honestly appreciate Dr. Polayes who shows extreme respect for students.
Reading Dr. Erbs reviews made me nervous but her class was an absolute blast!!! She is relatively flexible with due dates, reasonable with course expectations (exams became open note after discussing issues with Lockdown) and hilarious. This class is a LOT of work- I devoted a lot of time to it but the exams and lectures she provides make it doable
I got an A in her class but it requires a lot of work, obviously. I didnt read the textbook and even though exams were open note bc of issues with lockdown, they were NOT easy. I give her a 3 bc she contradicts herself a lot and makes it confusing at times. Other wise, get ready to study bc you cant just ride it out. Study like your at school.
She made an error in grade calculations and then dropped grades down on the very last day before they were submitted. Most other professors would have let it be or have been more flexible because of COVID. She is not flexible, very strict with her timeline and grading. Very tricky exams. Difficult to remain interested in her lectures.
Dr. Erb was a good prof but this class was hard. My advice is to stay ahead with modules and exam prep then use the practice exams she gives to test yourself. Do not take this class with a lot of other heavy classes as it is extremely time consuming.
I had to do a lot of self-studying since the way she lectured was really confusing. There was nothing wrong with the notes and I thought the exams were fair and doable, but her explanations were difficult to understand sometimes. However, she's really sweet and helpful. Pay attention to her past exams and you'll be fine.
I love, love, love Dr. Erb. I can't say enough about her truly. She is one of the best professors/teachers I've ever had in my 17 years of education. I loved her class, and I actually understood everything we learned for once. If you have the opportunity to take her class and you don't you are missing out big time. I will miss her & class so much.
Dr. Erb is great. Write down everything she says in lecture because her exams include what she says as well as what's on the slides. Open note exams, but tough. Go over the practice exams; she posts past ones and questions/content are similar. If you take thorough notes, go over practice exams and do all the post-lecture quizzes you'll get an A.
Dr. Erb is cool, she seems nice. The class was online and recorded lectures. Grade is based off 4 exams and module questions. The exams are open note but really tough, so take really good notes. Do the module questions they really help your grade (25%). Its a tough class but put in the work and you will def get an A. Very little extra credit given
DO ALL OF THE MODULE QUESTIONS!! Grades are based on module questions and 4 exams. If you do 100% of module questions you have a good chance of passing even if you do somewhat poorly on exams (exam grades >60 dont apply). Take notes on explanation of mechanisms, itll come up on exams.
I would not recommend her. Class is based on 4 exams and module questions. She's very tough and not lenient/understanding at all. It was very disappointing to take her. I really wish I had chosen a different professor for this course.
She never lectured. She would just throw problems at us and expect us to do them in class. Her exams were free response and was closed book. They were very difficult and she doesn't curve. Don't take this class, or you will end up very depressed with her. You put hours into studying and she grades harshly. She gives people points while others none.
She is the most cruel professor I have met. Most people in the class were seniors and she has decided not to curve. So, many people can't graduate due to her class. Don't take her she is strict with grades and her exam questions are really hard. Even when you study, it's just so much information and no time to retain all of it. She doesn't teach.
She doesn't curve. This class causes so much stress and she doesn't care if you aren't doing well. She can't even teach and when you ask questions she doesn't even give you a clear answer. She is strict and makes you feel like you're getting your PHD in this class. Your expected to retain 6-7 chapters each exam closed book and it's just too much.
Stays contradicting herself. Her previous classes the exams were MC and open book but this semester we weren't given that luxury. A lot of people failed and she is a horrible teacher. Never gave lectures just threw old recorded slides at us that she just reads off. Exams aren't even stuff we learned and the LA can teach better than her.
She gave a slight curve where you don't even notice it. Probably like 0.01% like that is gonna do anything to peoples grade. She doesn't know the material herself and throws multiple chapters at you. Didn't give you enough time to study for the final and no one had a break due to her class. The final was rough and some people came into class crying
Don't know why she was hired. She didn't teach at all but just read off slides. Wish I took it with someone else. Class was very depressing and strict. Messed up a lot of people's GPA. Practice problems in class barely helped for exams
She is a terrible teacher. She reads off slides. Many people failed because of how harsh she is. She gave us insane exams feels like your in grad school already. Closed book and not multiple choice. DON'T TAKE HER or you will come out depressed.
She doesn't care if you fail. Doesn't know the material herself. Exams were insane we were expected to know more than 15+ chapters for the final. She contradicts herself. Very stressful class don't recommend.
Throws problems at you. Doesn't lecture. Don't know why she teaches she makes your life hell. There is no curve and when asked questioned in class she checks her answer key and pauses. She doesn't even know the information herself. She sucks.
She is very tough. Her exams are so tricky feels like your in PHD school. She got hers at Cornell and thinks we can read biochem at her level. She doesn't give partial credit and just takes off many points easily. Don't take her I regret it so much. She ruined my GPA.
She made the LA make the study guide when she doesn't even know whats on the exams. She never taught us just expected us to watch videos online that she read off slides that is gonna help us. The we did p.p in class with classmates that was hard too. Then exams were FR and closed notes. Worst class I've taken. She is cruel.
Put your heart and soul in this class and can still do bad. The teacher doesn't teach she sucks. Don't know why she was hired. The class is meant to fail you. Previous years had it easier but now since it was in person it is FR and no notes which isn't fair. Don't get that ideology at all and LA teaches better than her.
This class will stress you out so much it's insane. She tricks you and doesn't give any partial credit. She is really harsh grader and reads off slides. She hasn't done anything to teach and gave the final so early which left no time to study. Questions make you want to cry on the exam.
Worst professor at GMU she doesn't even teach you. She is rude and many people were stressed for the final. She doesn't curve and this semester was hell. If I were you avoid her.
Wasn't a fan of the flip-classroom style but it wasn't as bad as people are making it seem. If you read her exam keys she really isn't that tough of a grader and she was very clear that tests were based on the in-class worksheets. She's really forgiving for a 400 course cause you could get a 60% on each exam and still get a C if you came to class.
Take the reviews that rated Dr. Erb a 1 or 2 with a grain of salt. Her class was graded off of 2 midterms, 1 final, and in-class assignments. Her exams were directly based off in-class assignments. Her and the LA went around to each group to assist those that had questions. This style of teaching was more application based, instead of memorization.
She's an okay teacher but her tests are pretty hard. You will need to spend lots of time in this class.
She's a decent professor but her tests are hard. They are not all multiple choice questions and you are expected to pull information out of your head, not just recognize them.
Hard class but she is not a bad prof. Exams are short answer but she gives lots of partial credit and is lenient grader. 30% of grade comes from in class worksheets that you get a 100 on just for completing. Lectures are recorded and not the best but she is good at explaining things in class. LAs are great too. Be ready for at least 5 hrs a week
Biochem will be challenging no matter whom you take it with. Dr. Erb was very fair and taught well. The flipped classroom style helped me learn a lot. You'll do well if you truly understand how to do the weekly module problems and past exam questions that Dr. Erb provides during the course. Definitely lots of work though~
LOVE HER! The class is flipped so you watch on your own and do worksheets in class. Dr. Erb and the LAs are SO helpful in class and its fun having conversations with them. Exams are all free response and difficult, but you can get partial credit. I learned so much in the course and actually understood the material.
I highly recommend you do not take Professor Erb for Summer semester. Fall or Spring, but definitely NOT SUMMER. The material she gave us was loaded with loads of information and I didn't know what to focus on. For a summer class, most professors are lenient with grading and offer curves abundantly She gave us a 3% curve after final grading
Don't recommend taking her in the Summer! Seems she's better in the Fall/Spring. Her exams were all MC. Her lectures are like 5-6 years old and were terrible. Her exam averages were in the 60s and didn't curve till the end by 3 points because it's based on the median. So much info was packed in the last 2 weeks which would usually take 3 months.
Erb is one of the best teachers out there. The 1's and 2's here are mixing the class difficulty with the teacher. She doesn't want you to fail.
Dr.Erb teaches the class like we already know what she is talking about. Attendance not mandatory but HIGHLY recommend going to class because you can work with classmates. Dr.Erb releases answer keys but there are no explanations for answer, this is for test and homework. She was barely a teacher and was a tough grader
Lectures are asynch & honestly a little confusing to comprehend because the flow isn't great. However, weekly problem sets are helpful her & LAs help alot. She gives past exams which are incredibly helpful for studying. Cheat sheet for final which is a game changer!
Rushes through slides, lacks explanations, and gives exams with questions beyond the material/not emphasized enough in class. She said that this class had a lower average exam grade compared to previous classes. Also fails to thoroughly explain material, and is reluctant to go over some of the problems in class giving the impression of gatekeeping.
Professor Erb rushes through her lectures, not allowing a moment to be wasted. Her fast pace during lectures made it challenging to follow along and fully comprehend the material being presented. It's easy to fall behind in courses like this one.
Unrealistic in her expectations; assigning an exam that covers several chapters in such a short amount of time is ridiculous. Class goes incredibly fast compared to other sections, making it nearly impossible to keep up with the material. HW points deducted if getting a question wrong. Avoid this prof at all costs if you value your sanity and GPA.
Taking her right now, and the exams are extremely difficult. The material covered in class does not always align with what is tested, leaving us feeling unprepared. Additionally, important information that is mentioned BRIEFLY on the slides is heavily weighted on the exams. Overall, this professor creates unnecessary stress and confusion for us.
Eh she's ok. She's definitely knowledgeable and passionate about biochemistry, but her exams are hard and require a deep understanding of the material. It is true that she tends to lecture at a rapid pace to avoid being behind. One annoying thing she does tho is that she sometimes frequently makes mistakes during lectures which confuses many of us.
This professor is terrible. Every semester, she changes the structure of the course, which doesn't seem to effectively assess a student's understanding of the material in the class. The course is very material-heavy, and the final is worth more than the midterms combined. There is no extra credit, and grading is based on a few things. GPA DESTROYER
She thinks it is perfectly doable for us to study all 20 chapters in just a few days for the final exam. We cannot have a cheat sheet, yet last semester students were able to make one. Oh, and it is worth more than the midterms. Worth 30 percent of overall grade. Final will either make or break your grade.
Avoid this professor at all costs.
She is rude and condescending when asked questions. Does not even try to make this class manageable. It is not just the concepts that are difficult to grasp, but also the logistics of the class itself. For example, she made the final exam date too early for us, leaving me with very little time to prepare.
She reads from the slides, the slides also do not help too much. The textbook readings were better to understand material. She has difficulty answering detailed questions by students about biochem. If you are good at chemistry you will not have a problem. Nice professor, just not good at teaching for those who need more elaboration on topic.
As someone who learns better w/ practice problems or watching videos, she didn't really provide enough material for me to feel confident about the info. I had to use a lot of outside source b/c of how complicated she explains things during her lectures, which makes it uninteresting and confusing. She speaks pretty quick too so good luck!
I'm a bit biased cause I'm studying biochem but I enjoyed her lectures. She was clear, on topic, and gave us a break mid-class to regroup. HW was on achieve and you had 2 weeks from the day it was covered to do it. She curves so the class average is a C or B. Our class had an A at 81% and up so as long as you put in SOME work you should pass!
You are wild if you read these reviews and you still end up taking her and youll be in the same position of these students after you take that final exam of hers. its all a never ending cycle that she gets away with every sem. but she brings in a lot of money for gmu due to her students retaking so i guess thats good for them.
She is poor at teaching, read from slides, boring and uninteresting, bad at explain knowledge.. GMU need place better professor.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR FOR BIOCHEM!! First, she makes so many mistakes during lectures, making it hard to understand the material. The exam questions were also super challenging; they were really complex and it focused more on memorization than actual comprehension. Had a very high GPA, but I struggled in that class, and it ruined it
Dr. Erb's lectures were confusing and contained mistakes. She would especially make mistakes when showing practice questions. She does not provide much practice material besides previous exams, so make sure to use the textbook and YouTube. She would emphasize certain material during lectures but barely cover it on the exam. Avoid her if you can!
The worst professor I've encountered during my undergrad.
If you want to experience chronic headaches, this class is perfect for you. She just couldn't seem to get the concepts across in a way that made sense. The test was super tough, with questions that were all confusing and unclear. Doesn't care about her students' well-being or understanding.
All the reviews are true. Class is already hard, but she makes it even harder. Don't get me started on the exams they're so peculiar and difficult. She is kinda rude and low-key judges you when you ask questions. Refuses to give more practice problems, and goes very fast every time and you don't have time to study well for them.
The hybrid format relied on old recorded lectures that she reads verbatim without explaining. The exams were in person and all short-answer and extremely difficult. Class sessions lacked engagement, and she seemed unwilling to provide help. Be prepared to teach yourself everything, better yet, just take someone else that knows what they're doing.
very very strict grader on exams, other than that the class is very doable if you put in the time.
Dr. Erb was a great professor. We watched prerecorded lectures at home then completed a worksheet in class for understanding which is the time to get your questions answered by her or the LAs. Mistakes happen but she owns up to them easily. Exams are short answer and challenging, so just memorization doesn't fly in this class but the work guides it
It's a difficult subject. You have to put in the work outside of class and read. Dr. Erb is helpful if you are genuinely trying.
Challenging biochem class with a tough professor. Lectures move quickly and exams are memorization-heavy. Recommend using unstuck AI and other study aids to stay on top of the material.
She is a great professor but no matter how good any biochem prof is, you have to be aware that it's a tough class and it requires a lot of hours of studying. Her office hour and the LA's reviews are very helpful. Take advantage of it!
Awesome and organized lecturer! Exams were difficult and studying took a LOT of time and effort, but that's the case with any advanced science course. Some exam questions would come straight from HW or practice exam. For notes, I recommend annotating her slides during class (since she goes quick), then reviewing after. Admitted to any mistakes made
