Terrible Prof for the ecology part of BIO120. She only knows how to rush through lectures and she doesn't care about anyone who doesn't have a background in ecology.
Although BIO120 is a mandatory course, Prof. Frederickson does fairly well going through explanation of the course material. She uses real-world examples to illustrate many important concepts, but sometimes runs out of time on lectures. Overall, she does a good job of teaching ecology.
Professor Frederickson often rushes through lectures, sometimes not finishing them in time. She also has gotten things wrong on several lecture slides that have to be fixed afterwards. For some reason she also repeatedly flexes on us about her trips to the Amazon and the fact she went to Harvard and Stanford.
did not end up with good grade simply because i lost interest. lectures are really boring, too much text on the slides - well sometimes less is more. good diagrams and videos. overall okay experience but not the best prof to get people interested in the topic
Prof. Fredericksons lectures actually got me interested in ecology! She gave lots of examples, and I found that a bunch of her test and exam questions were straight from lecture material. However, there is a TON of material to learn and a boatload of different things to read in her section. You really have to know your stuff to do well.
Just an average Joe. I didn't attend any lectures (instead I listened to them at home, so I could pause and play as needed). Tests were fairly straight forward.
Boring and disorganized. Nuff' said. And this is coming from someone who greatly enjoyed the evolution section of 120.
I honestly lost all inspiration to learn any ecology after going to her lectures. They were poorly timed, rushed, had too many words, and even she didn't seem to care about what she was talking about. BIO120 is a required course because they know that nobody would take it if people weren't forced to tolerate this.
Lectures were quite dry and boring.
Though Frederickson is not the best lecturer in terms of timing, she is incredibly passionate about biology and ecology in general. She has lots of field experience, and she brings in specimens and plants to demo during class. Team Up was ineffective due to crashing wifi but SimUText and the online web were useful!
Professer Frederickson is an extremely dry lecturer who always had to rush at the end of lecture to finish her slides. It was a big struggle staying awake during her lectures. If you do what you're supposed to in that class though, she's not a hard prof. Her portions of the exam were pretty fair for the most part.
10/10 would recommend for sleep therapy. Couldn't sleep one night, so I turned on the lecture recording and knocked right out. Best sleep of the semester. Read da books bro she asks some specific questions, but if you can't pass her class then watch out for Sian Patterson of BCH she gonna show you what real failure is. xoxo gossip girl
Talks about her research a TONNNN. Be ready to sleep in that class because she talks so slow. Tests ask for very specific examples.
I did not like Megan Frederickson, I found her to be condescending & very self-interested, constantly talking about herself during lectures. I found Bio120 to be very difficult and challenging, as well as rushed from concept to concept. Lectures were very long and heavy as well. Would not recommend her, or this course, unless absolutely mandatory!
Professor Frederickson is incredibly knowledgable, passionate, and hardworking. I took her class during covid, and while all lectures were prerecorded, she never failed to make them interesting. Each lecture was in a new setting and a new opportunity for her to teach us ecology in the real world. Tests were fair. Read and listen to all lectures.
Sweet teacher, no idea what these people are talking about. Tests are more reasonable than any other exam you'll find in first year life sci. She tells you exactly what the questions expect of you, gives you hints for exam content during lecture, and gives summaries of what you need to know. Easily the best professor I've had.
Honestly, from an online class perspective, she is one of my favourite lecturers. Her lectures are quick to the point and standard length (and you can put it on 1.5 speed if you prefer a faster lecture). The tests are incredibly reasonable. She only mentions her research briefly when it's relevant to the material, which makes it more interactive.
Best stem prof I've had all semester, makes the lectures interesting, loved the behind the scenes at the ROM sections, since I barely go outside in covid times, the change of scenery her lectures provide is amazing. Her lectures get a bit long at times but she explains concepts well and her tests are very fair. Overall a great experience.
Prof. Frederickson always relates biology concepts to real world so that students can understand them better. She also frequently changed her recording places, showing some buildings of u of t, Toronto zoo and parks. As a student taking classes online outside Toronto, it was really fresh and exciting to see things around Toronto at least online.
The idea of putting a nonsense, useless topic as a mandatory course is confusing. You can make some conclusion based on observations, but if you over conclude something, it becomes nonsense. Just pass this course for program, don't memorize the content.
I've read different reviews about her between online and in-person classes, but all I can say is that her online lectures have been really great! They're engaging and she really makes an effort to make them interesting. Her tests aren't too unreasonable and if you study well, don't really require that much thinking. One of the better profs I've had
Her lectures & slides were very clearly organized and broken down in a way that made them manageable & accessible. She made online lectures dynamic & interesting, with lots of concrete examples. She also expressed compassion re: the difficulties of online learning in a pandemic. Clearly passionate about her subject -- it's a little contagious.
I don't know how her lectures are like during in-person classes, but I thoroughly enjoyed her virtual lectures- and this is coming from someone who hates biology and only took it for my degree! She made lectures so dynamic and stimulating by including little videos of biodiversity all over Toronto, such great effort.
I like her lectures. They are fun and different. She obviously puts in a lot of effort. I also like that she splits her lectures into parts instead of slapping us with hour-long monologues. Her tests are fair and she answers all questions in tutorials clearly. She seems super nice too.
Prof Frederickson taught the second half of BIO120 and was just so knowledgable and passionate about what she teaches! Rly cares about the students, often says things like "it's just a test, it doesn't define who you are" and things like that. Idk why such terrible reviews because she's so sweet. Her tests are also fair!
not sure how prof Frederickson is for in-person classes, but for the online semester she was great! She made the lectures interesting and went to different places like the ROM or the botanical gardens to show us the real world applications of the course material which was nice. It's clear she's passionate about the subject and cares about students!
Genuinely don't understand why there's so many bad ratings. She's not a terrible professor at all. Her tests are fair given she explains the content. My only problem is how many readings we are assigned. I'd definitely prefer longer lectures where she explains instead of reading a million things that are quite repetitive.
Prof Frederickson is a gem. Had her for the second half of BIO120, great lectures and you could tell she put in a lot of effort to make the lectures fun, and interactive. Would definitely take a course with her again, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise underwhelming covid semester.
the nicest professor i've had so far, she was very sweet and i appreciated how she took the time to make her lectures more engaging especially with it being online. you can tell she really cares about her students (even though theres over 1000+). she's very knowledgeable with her subject area (ecology) and is really good at going over concepts.
Prof. Frederickson is super nice and her lectures for BIO120 were so engaging and interesting. As long as you keep up with the lectures and understand the content you will do fine on tests.
Prof Frederickson teaches the second half of BIO120 (Ecology). She is literally BEAMING as she teaches. She just seems so genuinely happy to be teaching ecology. She never stops smiling! As another review said, her enthusiam is a little contagious. It was just very sweet and endearing and made the lectures more enoyable. Also seemed very kind :)
Prof. Frederickson was one of the few profs who showed genuine care to their students. She was very clear in her lectures and gave lots of research examples to consolidate our understanding. If you understand instead of memorize the concepts, you will do well in her tests.
Out of my entire first semester of online learning, she was the best prof. She put so much effort into her videos and the tests were incredibly fair. The readings were the same as the lectures, but offered more details. Overall, a great prof and really kind
She genuinely cares about her students. Appreciated her 'road trips' in asynchronous lectures. She answers questions thoroughly in the lecture-tutorials and is truly passionate about her field of study. Test questions sometimes require you to make connections and apply it to a novel problem, but for the most part, straightforward.
I have never seen someone so enthusiastic about a subject that it becomes contagious. Then again, I LOVE Bio. She kind of reminds me of my Grade 11 & 12 Bio teacher who had the same enthusiasm and love for the subject. Despite how I'm less interested in ecology than other bio fields, it was still enjoyable. Neither easy, nor hard; fun nonetheless!
Made the ecology portion super interesting. The grading was a little whack, but I believe that falls more on the administration.
Professor Megan has wonderful asynchronous lectures for her online students. She took the camera out of the classroom and show the true specimens to us and made us want to study more in this course and field.
Fantastic lectures. Her asynchronous videos take you to the Royal Ontario Museum, or parks in Toronto to give a better understanding of biodiversity. She explains concepts in the lectures well too. The tests do tend to be hard but if you study for them they are not incredibly difficult.
An amazing and passionate professor! I loved how she would film her lectures in different places so it would be way more engaging. The course is a bit boring but if you review the lectures and readings constantly an A is doable. However, her tests are very specific and the grading is tough. It was an enjoyable but exhausting course to get through!
Great prof! She is very kind and good at explaining things. Hard test questions though, sometimes it feels like they're really trying to trick you. I also love how she pronounces NICHE as "nitch"
Questions are super fair, very well worded so that she explicitly tells you what she wants to see in the answer. For example, she'll ask about convection cells, and specifically tell you to include a definition of the coriolis effect in your answer. Lectures are very clear and concise, and she is a good communicator.
Prof Frederickson really did the most considering everything was online and bio is a hard subject to teach to 1,000+ people virtually and asynchronously. She would film some lectures at interesting locations (the ROM, High Park, inside a greenhouse, etc.) and seems really nice.
Professor Frederickson made BIO120 amazing online! She lectured in different places which were relevant to the topics we were learning, like the royal ontario museum, the zoo, etc. It made watching the lecture recordings a fun activity.
Enjoyed her class a lot. BIO120 on the road was great!
I had her online and she was just amazing, a true gem. This class was just incredible as well, and she'd do her lectures from places all across the country but making it relate back to the topic. Her tests were also super clear and her slideshows were amazing. I don't have any complaints about her, she's just my favourite.
Super sweet person, I loved BIO120 on the road! She took the lecture clips from different locations all around the country relating to the topics she was talking about. Her slides were clear and concise. Make sure to jot down what she says because whatever she says is testable material!
Sweetest, most amazing professor ever! BIO120 for me was asynchronous so her lectures were pre-recorded. However, she put so much effort into them by taking us to various locations like ROM. Her lectures can be quite long and detailed but everything she says is clear and is important for assessments. Overall, a wonderful professor!
She's overall such a great professor. Her lectures are fun and you can actually get through them, plus she films in different locations and shows you different specimens and plants which is super cool. But the readings can be a bit tedious but nothing too bad. She also explains everything super well and her tests are very straightforward!
An amazing bio prof.
Her online lectures were so fun to watch! She gave the lectures in different areas of Canada to make them more interesting, which I thought definitely helped. Her material is a bit harder than the material at the end of the course. However, most of it is straightforward, so as long as you study for exams you should be fine.
Her online lectures were the best! She always switched up her background location to keep things interesting, and tried her best to stay engaging. Honestly was sad when the professor switched for the second half of the course. You don't really need to do readings as her lectures cover everything. Her test was fair as well! Overall, great prof.
She makes first year biology in university so much fun, I look forward to see her lecture videos every week. Contents and tests difficulty are average, but the bio120 on the road thing really made a difference in terms of online learning experiences. 100% would have taken again.
I had her for BIO120 online, loved her lectures they were very engaging even while online and she is very well-spoken and easy to understand. The course itself was easy as long as you listened and did what you had to do.
Professor Frederickson revolutionized BIO120. She single-handedly managed to turn a not-so-popular subject into something I anticipated every week just to find out where she would film her next lecture video. She would film the lecture in different fun spots all over Canada. I wish other professors made learning as fun as she did. Hated labs tho
Had her for BIO120 online. She's super well spoken and keeps it super entertaining by giving real world examples of what she's talking about. For example, she's recorded real Pikas, salmon spawning, and visited countless other locations to keep things engaging. She really cares about helping everyone succeed, and is a great prof
One of the best first year professors; She made an otherwise boring topic ecology very interesting. The lecture videos were at a good pace and easy to follow. Easy to score in the 90s if you pay attention to general concepts, details and put in the work. I would say take the bad ratings with a grain of salt as we had a high B class average.
One of my fave courses of the semester! Yes, there was a lot of reading but she made the asynchronous lectures interesting by showing real animals, plants etc. She explained concepts in a manner that was easy to understand too which I loved. Such a sweet prof
Very well-planned and clear lectures, filmed lectures outside in places relevant to the lecture which made them interesting, enthusiastic toward her subject
the asynchronous lectures were super fun and you can tell she's passionate about the material, which is nice! lots of content to cover but she uses lots of examples to demonstrate the concepts
I took BIO120 back in fall of 2020, so this is a bit late of a review, but I remember that Dr. Fredrickson was really dedicated to teaching understanding, rather than the memorization that we typically associate w/ biology courses. Tests were challenging but fair and satisfying at the same time. Good stuff!
I loved professor Frederickson. She showed us so many cute videos of pikas and other animals in lecture, she once brought a bunch of plants and cacti into lecture to show us their phenotype. She talks really calmly and slowly, and explains things in a way so easily understandable. Very recommended!
This professor's classes were so interesting. I just feel to take her courses if I have chance next time even not studying biology major. Starting my semester with another professor, I did worse in biology. However I nearly doubled my test score in the second term test after this professor start teaching.
I absolutely loved her! She really piqued my interest in ecology and I found myself really looking forward to her lectures. She explains topics very well and I appreciate her pre-made videos shown in class. Her approach to teaching helped me to learn the content easier. For tests and exams, study the lecture material. Very lecture heavy!
She read word for word from her slides basically. I just didn't find her lectures engaging enough. She is very clearly passionate about her field but it wasn't enough to engage everyone. I do think her half of BIO120 was more straight-forward than the first half. Her portions of tests and exams were straight forward too. I didn't do the readings :)
Her slides were organized and easy to follow. She films short videos of herself to give the impression of being on a virtual field trip. It was heart-warming to see her effort trying to make the students feel more engaged in the lecture!
Prof is clearly passionate and put a lot of effort into her lectures, which were interesting. However the big class size made her lectures feel youtube-video-like. Tests were very lecture and readings heavy, more memorisation than understanding concepts. I think I'd enjoy her classes more if they were smaller.
I think her portion of BIO120 was quite straight forward. She clearly is passionate about what she teaches which definitely made the content more interesting for me.
Very interesting lectures, love that she incorporated videos from her work on the subjects we were studying.
She clearly is interested in the field which makes learning easier. The readings are more helpful than the lectures imo, lectures are just examples/ her videos. She's easy to understand/ follow and her test questions are straight to the point.
Goes so fast during lectures I don't even have time to write and the exams have so much random specific information from the readings, I swear it was like she picked a random line out of the reading and just put it on the exams and it being useless.
Really good professor! She did speak a little too fast at times but I didn't mind too much as this course provided lecture recordings. I'm not super interested in ecology but her enthusiasm made learning it bearable.
This prof was super sweet and passionate about her topic. Lectures were clear and easy to understand. She incorporated really nice videos of herself travelling around Canada to supplement what we were learning, really caring!
Prof Frederickson was one of the nicest professors I had at UofT. She is very enthusiastic and caring about the subject. She made the course content even more enjoyable with her videos travelling all around Canada, supporting our learning with her project "BIO120 on ROAD".
Prof Frederickson was great! All of her lectures were engaging, clear and showed that she is passionate about ecology.
She made BIO120 enjoyable and I'm honestly sad that she only teaches for half of the course. I loved her BIO on the road videos as it made lectures much more interesting and enjoyable. You can tell she really knows what she's talking about and is super passionate about it.
Incredible professor!! Made me thoroughly enjoy the ecology unit even though I was never interested in it before. Has the cutest videos where she travels across Canada to show us the different environments she talks about in her lectures. The test she gave was easy and her homework is easy to do well on, and she clearly cares about her students.
Lecture content was organized and easy to follow. Her lectures were engaging, especially with her videos she took across Canada. The readings were usually pretty short and I recommend doing them because there was content from the readings on the tests and exam. Overall a great prof and the concepts were pretty easy to understand imo
Heavy content in her slides + readings, but most of the test questions were based on the lectures. I did not do the readings cause they just reiterated what was said in lecture and the test questions did not go in that much detail. She talked very fast in class so i had to redo my notes afterward, but she explained everything pretty clearly.
Prof Frederickson's lectures made very clear what we were supposed to know on the test and the information was presented in a very easy-to-follow manner. Her slides were very valuable for review as nearly all of the information for ecology were on them.
She's not that bad but she is just really monotone and I was falling asleep half the time as she was reading from a script. Lecture content is pretty boring too and her slides have big paragraphs on it that make the content more tiring to listen to.
She's not bad. She reads her lectures straight off her slides and requires you to do additional readings.
Professor Frederickson is an actual instructor along with a being researcher, does and just with the slayts her classes are never boring she tries her best to keep our attention by including videos of her traveling the world doing research going to the museums and bringing plants and animals to the class. I would like to take her class again
Surprisingly easy tests.
She's a pretty good professor, all in all. Clear lecturer with videos of herself out in nature, making them a little less boring. Ecology isn't all that interesting to me, but she still explained the content very clearly and with relative enthusiasm. Lots of readings, but they build on lecture content so it's not too bad.
Not the most exciting prof but Frederickson made her lectures engaging with videos about her experiences which helped in learning concepts. Ecology isn't something I find too interesting but her part of the course was interesting and new to me. Tests were much harder compared to the first half but also because the concepts were harder too.
She brings plants to class guys. I like plants. I'm probably biased.
Her lectures were fun and engaging for the most part, especially when she'd add videos of herself explaining a topic in different parts of Canada. Exams were fairly straightforward, but I feel like some questions were too specific, in the sense that you have to remember every example given in class (there's a lot) as you may be tested on it.
Bless her heart. Clearly passionate about biology and approachable as an instructor. More UofT profs, particularly those responsible for first-ear courses, should learn from BIO120
best professor for a visual learner. she includes lots of visuals and videos of cute animals, clips from documentaries, gigantic plants and even pelts of animal fur. i'm not that interested in ecology, but she made the lectures very engaging and interesting to learn about.
Her slides were so wordy and hard to understand. Not a bad professor though as she was very passionate and I was able to pay attention. The exam questions were pretty easy too so that was great.
cute teaching style! she is reliant on notes, but i didn't find it a problem because she always tried to make lectures interesting. attendance was mandatory because of team-ups, but you could do well in this course with just the online lectures.
Lectures are clear and very informative
Tests were very fair and understandable. If you have taken AP biology this course is a breeze.
She was really nice and engaging with the class. I liked BIO120 on the road which was just her showing us real life example of content learned in class. The tests were pretty fair in terms of how they related to content. The lectures were recorded so it really helped with jotting down notes you missed in class.
I enjoyed her lectures, especially the bio120 on the road videos. She clearly cares about her students and the course material.
She was the gem of the most awful class for the first-year students. Even though BIO120 was a terrible mess, Frederickson did the beat she could with her hard material to engage in the class
She's great, she made this horrible mess of a course tolerable but Jesus Christ they need to cut down the unnecessary filler stuff from this course, too much content does not correlate to a quality learning OR teaching experience
She's a good prof, knows her stuff really well (she's over qualified for teaching bio120). I struggled a bit with focusing on her lectures sometimes when she was more monotone. Other than that she's great
She was a meh professor, considering that the class is generally boring but her tone was very monotone and the final was very heavy on the readings so don't skip out on them.
She did a good job teaching with energy; it was really obvious she's passionate about the subject material, and very qualified. Liked how she'd bring in real specimens to accompany her lectures, or splice in videos from her at real places that pertained to the material discussed. Did a great job making the material easy to understand.
Although the course was very boring she did lecture it well.
She is really great prof. Her section is easier to follow than Mahler's section. She is very logical and easy following in lecture. Also, she gives fair questions. She is super good in office hours and would respond to questions very detailed.
VERY GOOD AT ECOLOGY VERY BAD AT MATH
One of the best Bio profs in UofT, awesome lectures, and inspirational vlogs. Don't miss out on taking her classes.
Although ecology is not my cup of tea and a subjectively boring topic in biology, Fredrickson teaches it incredibly well. There are times where she just reads off the slides but overall, her lectures are engaging with her BIO120 on the Road videos and good use of relevant and interesting examples. Test questions are also incredibly fair.
Frederickson is a really great professor. She's super engaging and her video examples are really interesting. The test can be a bit tricky but other than that her part of BIO120 was pretty good.
Prof. Frederickson is a wonderful lecturer who makes ecology fun and accessible. The math could be explained better in lecture, especially for students with no background in Calculus, but the textbook does a good enough job. Easier content than Prof. Mahler's half but harder tests (although fair).
she is nice and her teaching style is so good and she actually explained stuff. the videos wake u up from ur morning nap and make u wanna listen which is nice. I hated this course with my whole life, the labs, the boring lectures and the exams ofc. but between all these I think she was the best part of BIO120.
Explained stuff well, and kept class interesting with little videos taken in locations related to the topics covered. great prof!
BIO120 definitely wasn't my favourite course, but Prof. Frederickson still found a way to make her lectures engaging and clear! I also think that the addition of some little clips (usually pika-related) during the lectures gave some nice breaks between the content-heavy slides. (The midterm was a little challenging though)
Her lectures weee very engaging and she was very approachable when it came to questions. I lived the BIO120 on the road videos she included (some of those took dedication).
I'm not sure why Frederickson has a much higher rating than Mahler. She deserves much lower. The exams for ecology are honestly very subjective, especially in a field where even the professionals don't agree on many things, when you try to learn more about the content when something doesn't make sense, there are often opposing views.
Her lectures felt a little rushed and her test questions often felt subjective and unclear. However, she did care a lot about what she was teaching about so that was nice.
